Crews Making Repairs, Cleaning Up Alton's Riverfront........

Portions of the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater and Alton's Riverfront Park are still without power as crews with the city's Parks and Recreation Department clean up the area and address problems caused by weeks of flooding.

Michael Haynes, the department's executive director says that they made a sizable dent in it.  He said that the majority of the park staff had been working on the basic cleanup for the past few weeks.

The restrooms, parking lots and sidewalks have been cleaned and power-washed, but damage to the park's electrical features, landscaping and playground equipment still needs to be addressed........

$2 Million In Fed Funding Available To Fix Roads, Bridges........

On Friday, the U.S. Department of Transportation reported that $2 million in funding is available for making emergency repairs to roads and bridges damaged by flooding in the northwest and southeastern portions of Missouri.

According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao, the emergency funding will assist in funding repairs to Missouri's roads and bridges damaged by the storms during April and May.

These funds are considered to be a down payment on the costs of short term repairs while the state makes assessments for the long term repairs........

Flooding Aftermath

Flooded Homes Contain Water Damage, Mold........

If your home has had water inside of it, there is a possibility that mold is there too.  Richard Hastings, Vice President and Co-Owner of Servpro says that the longer water is inside, the greater the odds are that mold is present.

Hastings says that for mold to thrive, it needs a food source, water and it likes darkness and heat.  Mold will grow in places that can be seen, as well as in places that are not so easily seen.

Mold can cause sickness in people when it is inhaled, especially for people who have immune deficiencies, asthma, allergies, the elderly or infants, who are most susceptible to it........

Crews Opening Gravity Drains To Flush Out Flood Waters........

The Mississippi River in Alexander County, Illinois has fallen enough that crews are now beginning to open the gravity drains to help drain out the flood waters.

Five of the seven gravity drains have been opened, and they are providing some needed relief to the flooded portions off East Cape Girardeau and McClure, Illinois.

Randy Colyer, the region's levee and drainage commissioner says that the gravity gates have been closed for four months, as they had to let the Mississippi River fall below 38.5 feet on the Cape Girardeau flood gauge........

Six Months Of Flooding Brings Stress To Alexander County........

The flooding in Alexander County, Illinois is causing stressful days and sleepless nights for residents, and it is nowhere near over.  The Illinois National Guard are filling sandbags to save homes, and residents try to support each other.

Becky Glodo, East Cape Girardeau Village Clerk says that when one of us has trouble moving forward, there is someone else with their arms wrapped around one another, carrying us.

Glodo adds that it just gets tough.   We are unable to fix it, so we must help one another, and I have to say that the community at this time has been united........

Cleanup Volunteers Needed.....

Grafton Needs You!

Main Street in Grafton is now open for business, but many homeowners and some businesses are still devastated from the flooding that began in March and is just now receding.

We need volunteers to assist with clean up and removal of flooring and dry wall in homes to get each home ready for rebuilding.

A variety of skills are needed. We welcome everyone.

Report to City Hall (Main Street Grafton) on Saturday or Sunday July 13th and 14th at 9 a.m. There will be city volunteers to register you and send you to the perfect place to match your skills. Please bring gloves and rubber boots may be needed. We will supply snacks, water or cold beverages for you. Some lunch food will also be available.

Regards,
Lou Lenkman

Mississippi River Journeys

Man Paddling The River For Veterans........

Greg Nejnamowski is a man on a mission, as he has undertaken a challenge most people would see as crazy, paddling the  entire length of the Mississippi River in a kayak.

Nejnamoski is a coordinator for Veteran Adventures, which is a SIUC-based organization that arranges a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities for Veterans to help them adjust to life back home.

He says that Veterans Adventures is funded by a grant that they did not get this year, so he came up with the idea for the Paddle for Patriots journey as a way to raise funds another way........

Man Swimming in the Mississippi River During Tropical Storm Barry........

Musician Glen David Andrews was walking up to the Mississippi River near New Orleans' French Quarter when he spotted a man swimming in the river while Tropical Storm Barry.

Andrews said that he's gotta be crazy to swim in the river.  Although he had misgivings about the daredevil's stunt, but he streamed the man's quick swim on his Facebook page.

Despite the storm-churned waters, the shirtless man prevailed, and Andrews was not able to contain his disbelief as the man calmly exited the water.  He said "I done seen it all".........

Lake Of The Ozarks

One Injured in Two Boat Collision........

Friday evening near dusk, two boats collided on the Lake of the Ozarks' Gravois Arm causing one of the drivers to sustain moderate injuries.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that at around 8:30 pm, at the 4 Mile Marker of the Gravois Arm, a 2016 Excel 21 foot boat piloted by Donald Schrimpf collided with a 2003 Bennington pontoon piloted by 85 year old David Dillon.

Reportedly, the vessels were approaching each other head on and both attempted evasive maneuvers, but they still collided.  Both boats were moderately damaged, and Schrimpf suffered minor injuries.  He refused treatment........

Calhoun Ferry Company

June 28, 2019
Both the Golden Eagle Ferry and Winfield Ferry remain closed for flooding. As most of you know the levee at Winfield was breached just below us around the old elevator. The water is off our landings on both sides of the river but until the water is off of Hwy N in Missouri we will remain closed. The water will have to flow back out of the breach as the river falls. As soon as we have any information to pass along we will. It looks like Golden Eagle will be closed for awhile yet. Based on the current river forecast our landing will not be out for a few days yet on the Missouri side and then it will have to drain off of Hwy B. I will post an update as soon as I have any new information.
Thank You,
The Calhoun Ferry Company

One thing I noticed. Nothing really smells bad at the Harbor. Office seems smaller with everything gone. Guys sure know how to get things clean. Our office does have one table
For gas boy computer. Shower curtain for bath room door. Lol. Kinda like camping.
Just so blessed that everything has been taken care of. Never never be able to repay our guys. Only sad thing. Looks like my lilac bush may be dying. The one from my childhood farm. Sure hope I can salvage a piece.

Plans for the club.....
The Clubhouse is insured with FEMA. The adjusters have been through the club and will hopefully be letting us know in the next coming weeks whether or not the building is repairable. We are on hold until that point.
The club got approximately 6 ft of water, covering all electric panels and all AC units. So clean up of building is taking longer while getting temp electric/water going.
I understand there is a lot of speculation, but there will be a club/pool at the harbor
We are doing the best we can and I will keep you informed as we hear.
Sorry, as I know this is not the season you were hoping for.
