Levee Bonfires Represent Togetherness, Tradition........

The construction of the teepee-like bonfires along the Mississippi River in St. James and St. John the Baptist parishes is a celebration of the old story of how the fires would light the way for Papa Noel on Christmas Eve.

In reality, however, the bonfires are infused with family, tradition and togetherness.  According to Joshua Weidert, the event is perhaps one of the best times of the year.

Weidert has been involved with building the levee bonfires ever since he could walk.  He would add logs to the pile with his parents as a child, just as his parents had done before him........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer

Yamaha Announced Their Long-Range Business Plans........

Yamaha recently announced their long-term business plans, which has a heavy emphasis on autonomous boating.  The concept of autonomous boating is not necessarily confined to self-operating boats.

Ben Speciale, the president of Yamaha Motor Corp, says that the term autonomous gets tossed about a lot, and self-driving cars come to mind. In the context of a boat, he believes that the consumer would want to have an interaction with the vessel.

Speciale cites Yamaha's Helm Master as an example of the integration of the boating experience for consumers by making it more intuitive and autonomous.  He also stated collision avoidance systems as a way to make boating more intuitive and less intimidating........

Fishy Tales From Huntington Beach, California

Waterfowl Passing Out....  Recovering From A Drug Overdose....

Residents in Huntington Beach, California observed some strange behavior from a Canada goose and a gull, as they were walking slowly with their necks lowered and heavy-lidded eyes.  The goose actually passed out with it's feet in the air.

Reportedly, the goose and gull had eaten some of the hundreds of prescription pills that had been dumped at a park a few miles from the Pacific coast.

The Wetlands & Wildlife Care Center reported that the Canada goose and the Ring-billed Gull were treated with IV fluids, and as of Thursday, they were doing better........

Fish Plant Sale In The Works........

The fish processing plant in Grafton was not in operation for very long and it may soon be getting a new lease on life, however, not as a fish processing plant.

Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin says that the new owner of the building has been trying to sell it, and might have a buyer lined up.  He added that the sale may be related to the coming rail-served logistics park in Jerseyville.

The fish processing plant saw several false starts, with a considerable problem involving the strong odor coming from the plant as it was processing fish.......

COME CELEBRATE with US

St Louis Resident & Former U.S Water Ski Champion will continue a 44 year tradition for Water Skiing on the Mississippi River for Charity on January 1st at Noon

St Louis MO – STARTING 12 noon SHARP , January 1, 2019 on the Levee at the Riverfront in front of the Arch. There will be an AMAZING site to see Santa riding 4 feet above the water on a special ski called a FOIL.

Celebrating his 33RD year for skiing at the New Years Day Polar Bear Ski Event, U. S. Water Ski Champion & Chesterfield Missouri resident Kevin Day will take to the water in front of the Arch on January 1st . Kevin has raised over $117,000.00 over the past years and donated this to the charities.

Local water skiers have been water skiing on Jan 1st in front of the Arch for 44 years. Thanks to the efforts of local skier Kevin Day and Lakeshore Ski Company, Missouri's #1 Waterski & Wakeboard School, Harness Dickey & Patent Attorney Tony Fussner the tradition will continue.

With expected temperatures in the 20’s, it appears that it may be a bit warmer than usual although in the past years, Kevin has skied in temps as LOW as minus -16 degree w/ the wind chill and a frozen Mississippi River JUST Last Year. This event has been consistent for 44 years.

This year’s fundraiser event will promote raising funds for Disabled Athletes with the Missouri Disabled Waterski Association, dedicated to improving the physical condition & quality of life for the disabled through participation in sports. Kevin Day, former Missouri State Water-Ski Champion, & 1999 U.S. Wakeboard & 2000 U.S Slalom Champion will again water ski although with the passing of his of his ski partner & Dog, Cal on 11/18/17, Kevin has a new friend who may visit the water with him this year. We are expecting a few other new Brave skiers, along with some Barefoot waterskiing and other fanatics performing fun on the water. We are told the show will start with SANTA CLAUS and he may be with a famous Reindeer performing ABOVE the WATER on a special new water ski called a FOIL @ 12 Noon. You will not want to miss this event so bring you cameras.

Kevin has raised over $117,000.00 over the past years and donated this to various Charities including Missouri Disabled Waterski Assoc.. The money raised from these events has purchased specialized waterski equipment for the disabled. MDWSA, Kevin Day, & Lakeshore Ski Company will put on an annual Learn to Water-Ski Day for disabled athletes & individuals this July 2019 @ Creve Coeur Lake. For more info please see our website at www.MDWSA.org

Santa Claus will open the show starting promptly on the water at 12 noon. Don’t miss this event as SANTA will be riding above the Water on a special waterski called a FOIL. Bring your blankets, drinks food and come cheer on these determined Skiers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The IVY Club Welcomed Historic Number of Transient Boaters in 2018
Offering Respite to Loopers on an Adventure of a Lifetime

PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. – December 20, 2018 – The Illinois Valley Yacht and Canoe (IVY) Club welcomed more than 200 transient boaters during the 2018 boating season.

Many of the boaters who docked at the IVY Club during this year’s boating season were completing “The Great Loop.” The Great Loop is a 6,000 mile boating adventure dreamed about by many, but completed by few. The Great Loop is a circumnavigation of the eastern United States and part of Canada. The route includes the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, the New York State Canals, the Canadian Canals, the Great Lakes, the inland rivers, and the Gulf of Mexico. This is a phenomenon that is largely transparent to the general public in Central Illinois. Many people do not realize that to get to the Gulf of Mexico from the Great Lakes you must either go down the East Coast or travel down the Illinois River, passing through Peoria, Illinois.

“The IVY Club considers the privilege of serving these boaters an honor and it has become a genuine part of the Club’s history,” said Gary Hunt, Marketing Director with the IVY Club. “We’re looking forward to another exciting boating season in 2019 which will include hosting many boaters traveling the inland waterways.”

The IVY Club has historically ranked at the very top of places to stop for an overnight stay, fuel and a great meal. The largest influx of transients is usually during the fall months as boaters are trying to beat the weather as they head south for the winter. This year’s parade of boats doing “The Great Loop” seemed to start earlier than in years past, allowing for some visitors to also take advantage of the pool being open.

“The Illinois Valley Yacht Club is an ideal place for Loopers heading south on the Illinois River to enjoy a respite along their journey,” said Kim Russo, Director of America's Great Loop Cruisers' Association (AGLCA). “The only America's Great Loop Cruisers' Association sponsor on the Illinois River, the IVY Club is a welcomed stop on this adventure of a lifetime known as the "Great Loop" and one that Loopers enjoy immensely. AGLCA and our members are thankful for the IVY Club's support!”

About the IVY Club
The Illinois Valley Yacht and Canoe (IVY) Club was founded in 1907, and is descended from several earlier clubs: the Peoria Boat Club (1877); the Peoria Canoe Club (1885); and the Peoria Yacht Club (1895). A not-for-profit organization, the Illinois Valley Yacht and Canoe (IVY) Club is a beautiful, historic boating and social organization located on the Illinois River. With a deep harbor, sailing crews, swimming pool, and swim team, the IVY Club is a haven for boaters and their friends for over a century. The majestic Club House and panoramic view of the harbor create the perfect ambiance for lasting memories.

For more information, visit http://www.ivyclub.org or connect with the IVY Club on social media at https://www.facebook.com/IVYClubPeoria/ and https://www.instagram.com/explore/locations/24413527/illinois-valley-yacht-and-canoe-club-ivy-club/.

About America's Great Loop Cruisers' Association (AGLCA)
AGLCA is comprised of a niche group of individuals with a passion for cruising the Great Loop -- the continuous waterway that encompasses the eastern portion of North America including the Atlantic and Gulf Intracoastal Waterways, the New York State Canals, the Great Lakes, the Canadian Heritage Canals and the inland rivers of America’s heartland. Whether you're dreaming about, planning for, currently cruising, or have completed the Great Loop, you've come to the place where information and inspiration about the Great Loop abounds. Membership in our Association is a platform to have an exchange with fellow enthusiasts supported by AGLCA resources. For more information, visit https://www.greatloop.org/.

Missouri River Management

Missouri Wildlife Refuge Created By Flooding........

After glacial forces carved out the Missouri River, it flowed free, and ran wild for millennia.  Settlers found that commercial travel along the river was hazardous, claiming over 300 steamboats with it's ever-changing sands, countless snags and shoals.

The upper and middle Missouri River were eventually dammed, and even the 367 mile stretch between Kansas City and St. Louis has been channelized.  The result is that the lush bottomlands no longer benefited from the natural ebb and flow, becoming less favorable for wildlife.  The timber on the bottomland was felled, and farms began to appear.

The Great Flood of 1993 scoured the bottomlands, and the price tag for repairs climbed into the billions of dollars.  In 1994, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established the Big Muddy Fish and Wildlife Refuge, which would not prevent flooding, but would make the land better suited for handling floods.

The Big Muddy Wildlife Refuge is made up of around 21,000 acres purchased in 17 units along the Missouri River between Kansas City and St. Louis.  The Big Muddy is unique amongst over 500 properties in the federal national wildlife refuge system, as it was formed to protect the flood plain itself, as well as the species that call it home........
