Four Governors Agree To Fight Missouri River Flooding........

On Saturday, the governors from Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri signed an agreement to fight flooding along the Missouri River.

The Agreement will allow each state to study ways to improve flood recovery and flood control.  The states must work together to create long-lasting infrastructure.

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts noted that 10 months after flooding began, the four states are still working to recover and rebuild.  He adds that in the future, they want communities and people to be put first when managing the Missouri River........

The Mississippi River Is On The Way Up, Bank Stabilization Season Ended Early........

The Mississippi River at the Carrollton gauge in New Orleans is already above 14 feet, prompting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District to suspend their Mat Sinking Unit's 2019 season as of January 21.

The Vicksburg District called the season off due to problematic river conditions caused by turbulent flow rates and flooded riverbanks.  They will wait about a minth to see if conditions will improve enough to allow for scheduled work to be completed.

Ed Adcock, chief of the revetment section for the Vicksburg District says that during an average season, the Mat Sinking Unit will set approximately 120,000 squares in the river.  A "square" measures four feet by 25 feet.  they are linked together aboard a special barge and carefully set along the riverbank to prevent erosion and protect key riverbank areas........

ILLINOIS WATERWAY - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY - UPDATE
The following areas are in the high water watch phase IAW the Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Zone 7 Peoria (Mile 187.0 – Mile 145.6),
Zone 6 Copperas (Mile 145.5 – Mile 129.1),
Zone 5 Havana (Mile 128.9 – 102.0),

Zone 2 Hardin (Mile 49.9 – 10.0).
High water and drift potential may be encountered in this area. Mariners are advised to minimize wake and exercise caution. Avoid laying up on saturated levees. Mariners should be experienced in high water conditions and avoid down-streaming operations if possible. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in debris and maneuver appropriately. Be aware that a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have occurred and take appropriate actions to prevent breakaways. Exercise caution in all meeting and overtaking situations, as swift currents may be present. Navigational buoys may have been dragged off station, so remain cautious while transiting. Due to levee reconstruction efforts, vessels are requested to travel at their slowest safe speed to produce no wake between Miles 108.3 and 102.6 and between Miles 88.7 and 88.2

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois

Illinois Senator Calls For Quincy Bay Restoration Funding........

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin recently spoke with R.D. James, the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, and pushed for funding to restore Quincy Bay.

Durbin says that Quincy Bay is silted in and needs attention.  He added that the river locks in Illinois are also in a dire need of expansion and modernization.

Durbin notes that they need the help of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers quickly, and he will keep working with the Corps to ensure water infrastructure has the necessary federal funding........

Hop On A Plane For A Mini Vacation

News Release From BoatUS

WICKFORD, R.I., Jan. 8, 2020 – Want to get a taste of the boating life or improve your on-water boat handling skills? The nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water together with In-Command Seamanship Training in Wickford offer a choice of four fun and affordable at-the-helm on-water training courses for beginner and experienced boaters taught aboard single-engine powerboats: “Intro to Boating,” “Precision Boat Handling,” “Open Water Boat Handling” and “Open Water Advanced Maneuvering.” Courses are available on April 25 and 26 and May 2, 3, 16, 17, 23 and 24.

All of the course details and signup can be found at BoatUS.org/InCommand.
Each course is three hours and taught at In-Command’s location at 1 Phillips Street in Wickford. The minimum age to participate is 16 years old. Courses start at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and class size is limited to four students per vessel, ensuring each student gets sufficient time at the helm under the watchful eye of a U.S. Coast Guard-certified instructor.

The “Intro to Boating” course covers shifting and steering, basic docking, open-water handling and basic navigation. “Precision Docking & Boat Handling” covers 180-degree turn-arounds, docking on both port and starboard sides, departing from a dock, and how to use S.C.A.N. procedures to avoid distracted boating. “Open Water Boat Handling” includes utilizing boat trim, displacement and planing handling, object avoidance, ferrying, and emergency stopping. The final course, “Open Water Advanced Maneuvering,” addresses crossing waves and wakes, person overboard retrieval, sharp turns on plane and advanced avoidance maneuvers.

The goal of the BoatUS Foundation and In-Command Seamanship Training courses is to address the high costs typically associated with at-the-helm training, making hands-on boating education more accessible. Courses sell out quickly so early registration is encouraged.

Bloch Marine Service

Yacht Club of St. Louis Location......

Hello Everyone!
We are happy to announce that Bloch Marine Service is becoming Yacht Club Marine. As of October 1st, 2019, Bloch Marine Service will no longer be taking new work orders, and will cease operations by October 31st, 2019.
But to keep service seamless, Yacht Club Marine will be performing the same quality service that you have come to expect over the years at both the Yacht Club of St. Louis and at Harbor Point Marina.
With that said, the winterization season is just around the corner, and it's time to get on the schedule to have expert winterization performed on your boat to protect it from the ravages of winter freezing. And also, winter is the best time to have Yacht Club Marine perform that much needed maintenance or big project that you have been putting off.
If your winterization request is received before October 15th, 2019, you will receive a 10% discount on winterization labor.
There is also a 10% discount on labor performed during the winter months for those big or small projects that the boat may need.
Best regards, and we'll see you out there!
The Yacht Club Marine Crew.
