Well, we had to go right rather than left when we met the Ohio. You could see a significant change in the water color at the confluence.

Oh the anchor came up clean in Angelo towhead again, so, at birds gage 16.5 we saw 20’ of water or more the whole way in on a downstream approach... so ignore the rumors. This anchorage works!

We passed Wycliffe KY and gave our respects to the river an who’d lost there life’s as we past the statue in their tribute.

Surprisingly the river was not the monster it’s usually called. The only monster occurred in the head... but ... let’s not go there.

We passed just 1 tow, running at an average if about 11kts at 1600 rpm. Fuel gauges hardly moved all day. There at 9/10ths. We met 30 or do upbound... evacuating Memphis I guess?

Bill, lots of river down here. Thrice what we see and average depth at 30-40 feet. Saw 100 a few times! Also lots of sand! It was tempting to beach the bow and break out the lawn chairs, umbrella and grill and have us a good ole fashion Jamaica Day. But... on we went

We’re now in Caruthersville, anchored in their slack harbor. 1/2 way to Memphis, 120 miles today. We’re in no rush as the owner has business in Memphis on Monday am so a Sunday pm arrival works... maybe in time for some BBQ and blues on Beale street!

Fort Jefferson Historic Site & Memorial Cross of KY at the Confluence

The Fort Jefferson Memorial Cross is a 95-foot memorial that stands high upon a bluff at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The history of the cross begins in 1937 when a few members of a community choir erected a small wooden cross on a hill at the Ancient Buried City site (now known as Wickliffe Mounds Research Center) in Wickliffe. In 1951, the cross was enlarged and bulbs were lit during Easter and Christmas each year. When Murray State University purchased the Wickliffe Mounds site in 1981, it became necessary to seek another location for the cross. It was then that the idea was born to build a cross tall enough to be seen from the states of Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky and would be lit at night..

We pulled out of Kaskaskia being chased by Kaskaskia’s! Apparently, Kaskaskia is an ancient Indian term for mean ass horse fly...

We ran slow, with the engines at 1500 rpm sipping fuel and running 10kts, no hurry as Kidd’s fuel 67 miles away couldn’t fuel us until 1pm. We put on 65 gallons in the main tanks and filled 2 55 gallon drums with fuel as a reserve. Very limited fuel options after this until NOLA.

We anchored just above the Cairo hwy bridge in Angelo towhead. Supposedly, this anchorage is littered with old tow howsers and snags. I’ve anchored her 6 times in the past and always come up clean. We’ll see in about 15 minutes if I made a 7th with no issues. Sonar showed the bottom clean on our full approach.

Last night the anchor lights refused to go on. We lit the boat up like a Christmas tree and left the AIS on to ping our location. Fortunately shortly before crashing the owner remembered a secret switch and the light came on... torture will be used later today to learn the other mysteries of this French make...

Off to Caruthersville today and Memphis Sunday. I’m heading to the engine room for checks and we’re off like a prom dress.

Picture of the Day....

It's last night's "Captain Cheech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters" concert at the Hawg Pit BBQ Barn.  The band was on the stage behind the building, facing the river.

There were a few boats anchored out, watching the show.  The sound was very good on the water at the distance we were away from the band and the stage was well lit.

Make sure to check it out next time.

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Anglers Reeled In Huge Cats During Tournament........

During Saturday's inaugural Alton Catfish Classic, Tim Spencer of Chrisney, Indiana reeled in the largest catfish of the tournament, which weighed in at 91.87 pounds.  Spencer and his teammate, Mickey Hammers of Rockport, Indiana caught a smaller cat that brought their total to 94.1 pounds.  The pair made their catches at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.

The first place honors in the Alton Catfish Classic went to Travis Hunter of Cuba, Missouri and Jeremy Ransom of Lessburg, Missouri, who caught three catfish weighing in at 96.56 pounds.  Ransom said that they did expect one team would catch a really big fish, but they did not expect to win the tournament with what they caught.

The teams of up to three anglers per boat departed Alton at 6 am Saturday morning, and had until 2:30 pm to check in with their three fish limit.  The fish were publicly weighed in and tournament prizes awarded at the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater near the Alton Marina.  All of the fish caught in the tournament were returned to the river........

Open Houses Scheduled On Flooding, Water Quality........

Residents living in the Wood River and Piasa Creek watersheds may be interested in a project that the Heartlands Conservancy is working on, as they are gathering information about flooding and water quality issues in hopes of repairing what needs to be repaired.

Janet Buchanan, Conservancy Project Manager says that watershed plans are an effective method of attracting funding for stormwater projects.  A part of the project funding process is to host open houses, two of which are scheduled for later this month.

The Wood River and Piasa Creek watersheds are located in the northwest corner of Madison County and include Alton, Bethalto, Godfrey and Rosewood Heights.  During the open houses, the draft results of the Flood Survey Madison County sent to residents will be on hand for review.

The open houses are scheduled for September 23rd from 6 to 8 pm at Brighton Village Hall and on September 25th at the Lewis and Clark Community College's Trimpe Building........

Stephan said that on Thursday, there was a constant line of around 75 people standing in line to meet former St. Louis Blues players, Bob Plager, Cam Jensen, Larry Pate and Reed Low.  Wednesday evening, former St. Louis Cardinals players Bernard Gilkey and Ken Oberkfell were on hand for the Expo's opening night.

For Saturday, a local celebrity dunking booth is planned, with Alton Mayor Brant Walker, Alton Police Chief Jason "Jake" Simmons, Police Sergeant Emily Hejna and retiring Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold are among those scheduled to take a turn in the dunking booth's hot seat........

Local Leaders to be Recognized for Environmental Conservation

Awards presented at Mississippi Earthtones Festival Mainstage

Alton, IL,

Organizers of the Mississippi Earthtones Festival will recognize three local community leaders for their contributions to conservation efforts in the region. Co- founder of the non-profit organization, Trinity’s Way, April Gray; Watershed Cairn’s artist Libby Rueter; and local food blogger and environmental activist, Toni Oplt. Honorees will receive their Confluence Conservation Leadership Awards on Saturday, September 21, at 4:30 PM, on the festival’s main stage at Broadway and George St, Downtown Alton.

Awarded each year since 2007, The Mississippi Earthtones Festival Committee recognizes people who make significant contributions in environmental conservation in the Riverbend region. Past awardees come from eclectic backgrounds and iconic area institutions and include Alley Ringhausen, Executive Director of Great Rivers Land Trust, Nate Keener, Director of Sustainability, Lewis and Clark Community College and Sister Maxine Pohlman, SSND, Director of the LaVista Ecological Learning Center,

The 2019 recipients have worked tirelessly to advocate, educate and inspire action in areas of environmental activism, sustainable agriculture and clean air and water initiatives.

April Gray is one of the founders of the non-profit organization, Trinity’s Way, and an English teacher/journalism adviser at Alton High School. Trinity’s Way was formed in March 2018 after Gray’s 17-year-old daughter, Trinity, died in a car accident. When a posthumous writing was discovered that brought to life Trinity’s dismay over littering in the area of Alton known as “The Caves,” Gray decided to create an organization dedicated to supporting causes aligned with her daughter’s passions, which included animals and the environment. Since the inception of Trinity’s Way, the organization has hosted nine litter clean-ups in the Alton area. In addition, they have adopted a one-mile stretch of US 67 through the Adopt-A-Highway program, provided volunteers for clean-ups hosted by Sierra Club and 1 Mississippi, and participated in several community events to educate the public about littering and recycling. Trinity’s Way also works with local animal-aid organizations to provide necessary support and enhance their services. The organization has hosted three pet food drives for Riverbend Pet Food Pantry and a supply drive for Treehouse Wildlife Center. Currently, Trinity’s Way is working on a project with Hope Animal Rescues to provide a much-needed space for rescued puppies.

Toni Oplt, aka the Green Gal of the Midwest, is a food blogger who is as passionate about where her food comes from as what she is whipping up in the kitchen. Her journey began with a single quest: she needed to find her health. After years of struggle she finally let go of the remedies of conventional medicine and sought help outside the sphere of health insurance-covered options. Seeing an “unconventional” doctor and changing her diet little by little made her well. It wasn’t a quick fix; nor an amazing or unusual story, but it took her beyond wellbeing. One discovery led to another and she found her health was intricately connected to the health of the Earth, her friends and family and the farmers who grow her food. She learned to live in faith, be simple, practice kindness, to waste nothing and love infinitely. She took a leap of faith and quit her job to do what she loves. From that journey her blog Green Gal of the Midwest, filled with great recipes, helpful kitchen hints and, local and healthy food, was born. Toni also chairs the Metro East Green Alliance and has been a staunch activist for a just transition from fossil fuel to a clean energy economy.

Throughout her career as an artist and arts administrator (Washington University and Southwestern Illinois College), Libby Reuter has been a mural painter, found-object sculptor, and an installation artist. After the flood of 1993, her work has been focused on water. Since 2011, she has been building glass sculptures for Watershed Cairns, a collaboration with photographer Joshua Rowan. Watershed Cairns: Water Marked with Art has been exhibited at the Missouri History Museum, St. Louis, Missouri; Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, Mt. Vernon, Illinois; and the Minnesota Marine Arts Museum, Winona, Minnesota. Libby and her husband Bill moved from the Benton Park neighborhood in St. louis to make their home in Alton in 2017

Andrew Dobson, local artist and photographer has once again donated his talents to design the coveted Mississippi Earthtones Festival t-shirt. This year’s theme is “We’re on River Time”. These tees aren’t for sale, you have to volunteer at the festival to earn one. Those interested in volunteering can go to this site to sign up https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4cafa72da4ff2-mississippi6

The Festival committee sends out a special thank you to Mississippi Mud Pottery owners Felicia Breen and Chad Nelson who graciously donate their time, talent and materials to produce the specially designed award ewers.

About Mississippi Earthtones Festival:

Planned River Releases Changed By Rainfall........

Over the next several days, the amount of water being released into the Lower Missouri River will be reduced in order to accommodate the recent heavy storms across the Upper Plains.

On Friday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that the water releases from the Gavins Point Dam will be lowered to 65,000 cubic feet per second Saturday, and 60,000 cfs Sunday.

The Corps also said that the reduced releases won't last for more then three days before gradually ramping up to 80,000 cubic feet per second.........

3rd Chute II Opens In Alton........

Recently, Wayne Draper, owner of 3rd Chute II, opened up the watering hole at the location previously known as Bottoms Up at 2204 Fosterburg Rd. in Alton.  The original 3rd Chute Bar and Grill is located in Grafton.

The building housing the 3rd Chute II has been home to a variety of different venues, however, Draper says he believes that he has the formula for keeping the doors open for years to come.

Both of the 3rd Chute locations are intended to make boaters feel at home, even in the dead of winter.  The decor is taken from what may be found at a marina, an ocean front resort or the Lake of the Ozarks.  Extensive renovations were made at the 3rd Chute II, including the outside bar, which is fashioned from a wooden 1966 Chris Craft........

Boat Registrations Down During Second Quarter........

According to new data released by Statistical Surveys Inc., total new boat registrations were down by 5.4 percent year-over-year during the second quarter of 2019, and down 0.7 percent on a 12 month rolling basis.

The data, however, reveals uneven trends across different sectors, as some segments saw decreases during the second quarter, while other saw growth.

Wake and ski boat registrations increased by 4.4 percent year-over-year, but decreased by 2.1 percent in a 12 month rolling basis.  Personal watercraft saw increases of 8.1 percent year-to-date, as well as a 1.6 percent increase on a 12 month rolling basis........

Plans for the club.....
The Clubhouse is insured with FEMA. The adjusters have been through the club and will hopefully be letting us know in the next coming weeks whether or not the building is repairable. We are on hold until that point.
The club got approximately 6 ft of water, covering all electric panels and all AC units. So clean up of building is taking longer while getting temp electric/water going.
I understand there is a lot of speculation, but there will be a club/pool at the harbor
We are doing the best we can and I will keep you informed as we hear.
Sorry, as I know this is not the season you were hoping for.
