STL Metro Area Flooding Outlook

St. Louis Area Rivers Expected To See Moderate Flood Stages.........

While flooding is affecting portions of the Missouri River basin in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, the river levels are expected to be cresting in the St. Louis region over the next week.

According to data from the National Weather Service, the Mississippi River at St. Louis is expected to rise into moderate flood stage.  It is expected to rise some 7 feet this week, and will affect low-lying areas.  Some of the floodgates will be closed along the St. Louis riverfront.

Areas of the Mississippi River upstream from the St. Louis region are expecting to see some floodwaters, especially locations such as Clarksville, Missouri, where there are no levees present.  Clarksville has requested sandbags fromt he U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District........

Mississippi River At Clarksville, Missouri

Clarksville  Prepping For Potentially Historic Flooding........

The tiny town of Clarksville, Missouri is preparing for the possibility of record-setting flooding, primarily due to an unusually snowy winter to the north.

Back in 2008, floodwaters inundated Clarksville, destroying portions of the town.  Resident Abby Palmer said that the flooding was the worst she had seen, and it had damaged many shops and homes.

So far, Palmer and other volunteers have been building a floodwall using some 1,500 tons of rock and plenty of sand bags, which will protect about two blocks of the Clarksville downtown area........

Environmentalists:  Stop Dying The River Green........

There is a tradition in Chicago, Illinois of dying the Chicago River green as part of the city's St. Patrick's Day celebration.  There are some environmentalists, however, that want the river-dying tradition to end.

According to Margaret Frisbie, the executive director if the 6,000 member nonprofit Friends of the Chicago River, the Chicago River is healthier that it has been in 150 years, so it might be a good idea to end the 55-plus year old tradition.

The annual tradition began in 1962, which was well before laws were enacted to protect waterways from pollutants.  These days, the Chicago Journeyman Plumbers, Local 130 use what they claim is an environmentally friendly vegetable-based dye to turn the Chicago River bright green........

Flooding News

Flooding Across The Midwest Prompts Evacuations, Closures........

On Friday, flooding across the central United States has inundated communities along waterways, prompting evacuations, the temporary closure of a nuclear power plant and closures of an interstate and a major river.

The high water levels, brought about by a massive late-winter storm, has driven some waterways to record levels in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota.

The flooding in many places is the worst seen in nearly a decade, however, the situation is expected to quickly improve over the weekend........

Flooding On The Missouri River Near St. Joseph, Missouri

US Coast Guard Closes Missouri River To All Boat Traffic........

Treacherous currents and high river levels along the Missouri River has prompted the U.S. Coast Guard to close a 100 long section of the river from about 50 miles south of Omaha, Nebraska to St. Joseph, Missouri.

In addition to the river closure, the Coast Guard has set a no wake zone for any vessel on the Missouri River between St. Joseph and Kansas City to minimize any damage to levees.

The Coast Guard made the announcement on Friday, and also stated that the restrictions to operations will be removed as soon as water conditions improve........

National Weather Service

Flood Safety Awareness....

Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe weather related hazard. The main reason is people underestimate the force and power of water. More than half of all flood related deaths result from vehicles being swept downstream. Of these, many are preventable.

Last week was National Flood Safety Awareness Week... click here

Mississippi River In The Riverbend

Officials Keeping Tabs On The River........

Local officials, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Weather Service are keeping an eye on the Mississippi River, as heavy rainfall and heavy snow pack in the north will push local rivers out of their banks.

According to Mark Fuchs,  a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, the rivers in the Riverbend region will be running high for the better part of the spring.

The Mississippi River at Alton and Grafton will be expected to crest a week from Saturday.  The Mississippi River at Grafton is expected to creep into the moderate flooding range, but likely won't significantly affect roads in town........

Asian Carp Update

Author Chronicles Invasive Carp Crisis........
