My wife Joan and I were enjoying Enterprise Island when this yellow sea plane landed and pulled up to the beach. A very nice man got out and started cleaning off the pontoons and polishing up plane it was a pretty cool site.

Mississippi River Near Grafton, Illinois Grafton Ferry Awarded IDOT Regional Ferry Study Grant........
Efforts working to shift the Grafton Ferry to providing year-round service between Grafton, Illinois and St. Charles County, Missouri have taken a major step forward.
The Illinois Department of Transportation recently announced that $210,000 has been included in the 2023 statewide Planning and Research Program to conduct a study of the ferry systems in Grafton/Calhoun County region.
The City of Grafton had partnered up with America's Central Port District and the Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau to create the request for the grant titled Ferry Landing Operations Attract Tourists. After the study is complete, the next step would be to seek funding to put the recommendations into place........

Mississippi River Shipping Low Mississippi River Levels Affecting Barge Traffic........
Thanks to several weeks of drought conditions, there are sections of the Mississippi River that are so low that barge traffic is being limited. This is occurring at one of the worst times, as crop harvest season has begun.
Some communities along the Mississippi River between St. Louis and New Orleans could see record low water levels over the next several weeks. The National Weather Service is forecasting that the Mississippi River at Memphis could reach it's second lowest level ever by October 13th.
On Thursday, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials said that shippers have agreed to reduce the number of barges in tows from the normal maximum of 36 barges in a tow to 25 barges........

Friday, September 30th & Saturday, November 5th. Pere Marquette State Park Fishing, Hiking Programs........
Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton, Illinois recently announced that they will be hosting fishing Night Hike programs on Friday, September 30th, and on Saturday, November 5th.
Attendees will meet at the Pere Marquette Visitor Center at 5 pm, where there will be a program on fish and urban fishing presented by urban fishing coordinator, Scott Isringhausen. Kids will then be allowed to fish in the bluegill pond after the presentation.
At 7:30 pm, there will be a program about owls, followed by a two mile night hike. At he end of the hike, there will be a hotdog and marshmallow roast. Refreshments and drinks will be included. One flashlight per family is recommended........

Boat Manufacturer Beneteau Sees Significant Growth During 1st Half Of THe Year........
Groupe Beneteau recently reported that their revenue increased by 8.6 percent and income from ordinary operations increased by 30 percent over the first half of 2022. Beneteau also announced that they have bumped up their income forecast from $116.7 million to 121.5 million.
During the first half of 2022, Beneteau's boat segment reported 10.9 percent operating margin revenues, while recording $530.7 million in revenue for the half. This is a 2.8 percent increase over 2021.
The revenue increases were offset partially by supply-chain interruptions, which led to $77.7 million in deferred billing, which represents 15 percent of revenues for the first half of 2022........

Illinois Fishing News Illinois One Of The Best Spot For Dishing........
Lawn Love recently released their 2022 Best and Worst States for Fishing and Illinois was ranked as one of the best fishing spots for fishing in the United States.
Illinois placed 12th on the list due to affordability, number of catfish fishing clubs among other reasons. The study looked at community access, affordability and supplies in it's ranking. Illinois placed 17th for community, 25th in access, 3rd for affordability and 41st in supplies.
Missouri was rated 18th in the top 25 states for fishing. The fishing ranking listed Branson, Missouri as a must-visit destination due to it's History of Fishing museum and the fan favorite angling spot Table Rock State Park........

Missouri Water News Governor Parson Declares October Clean Water Month.......
Missouri Governor Mike Parson recently declared the month of October 2022 as Clean Water Month in Missouri. In his proclamation, Governor Parson noted that October 18th is the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, which is intended to prevent and eliminate pollution and maintaining the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the nation's waters.
Governor Parson' proclamation highlights that the Missouri Legislature acknowledged the importance of water protection by enacting the Missouri Clean Water Law in 1972, which establishes the authority for the Missouri Clean Water Commission to implement the Clean Water Act in Missouri.
Governor Parson has called on all citizens of Missouri to join him in working together to appreciate and protect clean water as a crucial resource for the state of Missouri........

Upcoming Events.... Friday, September 30th & Saturday, November 5th. Pere Marquette State Park Fishing, Hiking Programs........
Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton, Illinois recently announced that they will be hosting fishing Night Hike programs on Friday, September 30th, and on Saturday, November 5th.
Attendees will meet at the Pere Marquette Visitor Center at 5 pm, where there will be a program on fish and urban fishing presented by urban fishing coordinator, Scott Isringhausen. Kids will then be allowed to fish in the bluegill pond after the presentation.
At 7:30 pm, there will be a program about owls, followed by a two mile night hike. At he end of the hike, there will be a hotdog and marshmallow roast. Refreshments and drinks will be included. One flashlight per family is recommended........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri Hannibal Welcomes American Symphony On It's Inaugural Cruise........
On Saturday morning, the American Symphony made it's first stop in Hannibal, Missouri and the passengers and crew were treated to a warm welcome as it stopped on it's inaugural cruise along the Upper Mississippi River.
The American Symphony's 103 passengers and crew mwmbers were welcomed by Tom and Becky ambassadors, Hannibal Mayor Jim Hark and his wife Leesa, members of the Chamber of Commerce, Hannibal Visitors Convention and other members of the community.
Mayor Hark accompanied by Tom and Becky presented the American Symphony's captain with a proclamation, a key to the city and a copy of Dea Hoover's book, Hannibal: A walk Through History........

Lake Of The Ozarks This Weekend's Big Bass Bash Has $100,000 Up For Grabs........
This weekend, the Lake of the Ozarks will be hosting the Big Bass Bash. The tournament is built for amateurs and offers them the chance to win up to $100,000 for the biggest fish.
THe tournament will be held over the weekend, October 1 - 2, 2022 and will run from 7 am to 3 pm each day. THe entry fee per angler is $140 per day or $190 for two days.
For each paid entry anglers receive an entry into a drawing to win a new Phoenix 818 and a 150 HP Mercury 150 Pro XS. The drawing will be held on Sunday, October 2nd during the Awards Ceremony at Public Beach No. 2........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Crews Dredging "The Nook" At Melvin Price Lock & Dam........
On Tuesday, crews were using a trackhoe aboard a barge held in place by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Pathfinder towboat to dredge mud from between the Auxiliary lock of the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26 and the Illinois bank of the Mississippi River.
That area, called "the nook", is where maintenance barges and other vessels are often anchored near the dam........

Mississippi River Near New Madrid, Missouri Luhr Bros. Awarded $11.8 Million Dike Contract........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District recently awarded a contract of more than $11.8 million to Luhr Brothers Inc. of Columbia, Illinois for the construction and maintenance of a dike along the Lower Mississippi RIver at Donaldson Point near New Madrid, Missouri.
The Corps is partnering with commercial towing interests, represented by the Lower Mississippi River Committee as the non-federal sponsor to carry out the contract at Lower Mississippi River Mile Marker 903.
Project manager Zach Cook says that the work is needed due to concerns raised by towboat pilots during recent low-water years. Cook adds that the region has required repetitive dredging over the past several years as well........

River Des Peres In University City, Missouri U City Looking To Buy Out Homes In Flood Plain........
In spite of plans for buying out 380 properties, University Coty is now looking to only purchase 24 homes located within the River Des Peres flood plain. City Manager Gregory Rose says that they would have liked to purchase all of the homes that were flooded, however, it would not have been practical.
Rose says that the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency did not see a way to fund the purchase of 300 homes via federal funding. Rose adds that the estimated cost of purchasing all 24 homes is approximately $4.7 million.
The buyout plan includes properties along Wilson Avenue, Burch Lane and the Hafner Court Apartments. If SEMA approves the buyouts, some homeowners could see an estimated $195,000 check........

Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton, Illinois recently announced that they will be hosting fishing Night Hike programs on Friday, September 30th, and on Saturday, November 5th.
Attendees will meet at the Pere Marquette Visitor Center at 5 pm, where there will be a program on fish and urban fishing presented by urban fishing coordinator, Scott Isringhausen. Kids will then be allowed to fish in the bluegill pond after the presentation.
At 7:30 pm, there will be a program about owls, followed by a two mile night hike. At he end of the hike, there will be a hotdog and marshmallow roast. Refreshments and drinks will be included. One flashlight per family is recommended........

Mark Twain Lake Corps Extending Camping Season At Some Sites........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake recently announced that they would be extending the camping season at some of their camp sites due to increased demand.
In order to accommodate the increased need for campsites, the Ray Behrens Campground, sites 48 - 116 in Little Bluestem and sites 117 - 157 in Cedar Ridge will be up for reservation through Monday, October 24th.
Visitors will be able to enjoy the Frank Russell Archery Park, David C., Berti Shooting Range, Lick Creek and Joanna Trails, Northeast Missouri Vietnam Memorial as well as boat launching opportunities year-round........

Fall Color Outlook Drought, flooding may affect 2022 Fall Colors........
Soon, the trees in the Riverbend region will begin their annual color change, but this year's drought conditions earlier in the summer may end up affecting the fall colors even after the heavy rainfall events that followed.
Sam Lord, an instructor of Soil Science at the University of Missouri says that when heavy rains arrive during a drought period, the water falls so hard and fast that the soil isn't recharged like we think it will be. He adds that he water will run off quicker than it would if it was absorbed in the soil during a normal year.
This means that the trees may not contain the same amount of water even after the historic rainfall. Lord says that this year, the fall color display may be shortened or very abrupt, turning from yellow to brown very quickly........

River Studies Wash U. Model Looks At Effects Of Flooding On Riverbeds........
Researchers at St. Louis' Washington University are studying how the power of floodwaters may be reshaping the underwater topography of riverbeds. Claire Masteller, a Geomorphologist and a lead researcher says that they want to measure everything about the river system before, during and after a flood event.
To study different floods in different locations, the researchers have constructed a river model in their laboratory which will allow them to replicate a variety of floods and river types with just the flip of a switch.
Masteller says that they believe that in response to big floods, structures that have been built on the riverbed will be broken up and disconnected, causing the rivers to be more susceptible to erosion........

Missouri River Journeys A Look At The Art Created As He Paddled The Missouri River........
Kansas City resident and artist Steve Snell recently completed a canoe trip down the Missouri River while painting the scenes that he saw each day. The journey took him 88 days to complete.
Snell put his canoe into the Missouri River at Three Forks, Montana, and ended his trip at St. Louis, Missouri. The fruits of his labor are a wall of artistic impressions of life along the Missouri River.
Snell says that there was a joy in heading into the unknown and not fully understanding what he would encounter next on his journey. He said to let life happen and embrace what is before you in that moment and just keep paddling........

River Cruising News Multiple People Bumped From Viking Cruises Days Before Departure........
In April 2020, Richard and Jean Pletcher paid $18,800 to reserve a luxury cruise from St. Paul to New Orleans to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. This would have been the couple's 6th voyage with Viking Cruise Lines.
In early September 2022, mere days before the first trip of the Viking Mississippi from the Mississippi River's headwaters to the Gulf of Mexico, the company informed the couple that their reservation had been cancelled.
The custom built, 386 passenger Viking Mississippi departed Lambert's Landing in St. Paul Minnesota as planned, however, the Pletchers were not on board. The Pletchers were not the only people bumped from the cruise at the last minute........

Fishing News From The Cumberland River Possible Record Catfish Reeled In ........
Officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency say that a catfish that was recently caught on the Cumberland River in northwestern Tennessee could set a new state record, with several ounces to spare.
Micka Burkhart reeled in the 118 pound, 7 ounce monster blue catfish on Saturday, September 24 while fishing on the Cumberland River in Stewart County, Tennessee.
Burkhart caught the catfish with skipjack bait. He ended up taking 45 minutes to land the beast. If the fish is proven and accepted, he will have beaten the previous record set in 1998 by about six pounds. After taking measurements and photos, Burkhart released the catfish back into the river........

Added Sunday Missouri River Shipping Corps: Drought Prompts Early End To Navigation Season........
Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently announced that they will be cutting short the navigation season along the Missouri River this fall on account of the continuing drought.
According to John Remus, chief of the Corps' Missouri River Basin Water Management Office, they have been conserving water for several months. The first clear signs of a drought began to appear in July 2020. Remus says that a priority is to keep a reserve of water in the upstream reservoirs.
The Corps has cut releases from the reservoirs, dropping Missouri River levels by a foot, which will affect vessel traffic and could affect municipal water supplies and other utilities that rely upon the river. Remus says that the navigation season will end three days early on November 28th........

Added Sunday Fishy Tales From Decatur, Illinois An Alligator Floated The Lazy River At Illinois Water Park........
Splash Cove, a Decatur, Illinois water park, recently marked the end of their summer season by allowing a special visitor to float along their lazy river, G, the alligator.
The Scovill Zoo brought G to officially be the final visitor to the park to float along the lazy river. According to Splash Cove officials, the last human visitor left several weeks ago, allowing enough chlorine to naturally burn off for the water to become safe for an alligator to take a dip.
The Scovill Zoo posted a video to social media showing G floating along the lazy river and crawling along the bottom of the water. He apparently enjoyed his time on the lazy river, because he refused to leave........

Added Sunday Boat Manufacturer The First Lamborghini Yacht Has Arrived Stateside........
The first-ever Lamborghini yacht recently arrived in the United States and is now waiting for it's new owner at a South Florida dock. Back in 2020, the Italian supercar manufacturer had announced a partnership with Italian superboat manufacturer, Tecnomar, to produce a limited number of yachts.
Called Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63, the name has several connotations. The vessel is 63 feet long, has a top speed of 63 knots, (which is about 72 mph), and there will only be 63 made.
One additional Easter egg in the name is that it points to the year 1963, which is the year that Ferruccio Lamborghini founded his namesake car company. The yachts will have a starting price point of $3.5 million........

American Cruise Lines announced that their latest riverboat, the American Symphony has begun cruising the Upper Mississippi River earlier this week. The vessel was christened in Natchez, Mississippi on August 30, 2022.
The American Symphony is currently sailing the company's longest river cruise itinerary, which is a 22 day Complete Mississippi River Cruise, from New Orleans Louisiana to St. Paul, Minnesota.
The riverboat was docked in St. Louis from Wednesday, September 21 through Friday, September 23. On Saturday, September 24, the American Symphony is scheduled to arrive in Hannibal, Missouri........

Mississippi River Shipping Seaman's Church Institute Raises $3 Million For Ministry On The River........
The Seaman's Church Institute recently announced that they have raised over $3 million of their $5 million goal so far in support of their Ministry on the River campaign. The campaign was founded in 2019 with a gift from American Commercial Barge Line and the Ray & Kay Eckstein Charitable Trust Fund.
The SCI Ministry on the River program is focused on the well-being and wellness of domestic mariners. The SCI chaplains are trained in crisis management and respond to maritime emergencies on the Western Rivers or Gulf of Mexico.
In addition to crisis response, SCI river chaplains offer frequent contact and follow-up with mariners, checking and advising on mental health, celebrating milestones, as well as offering guidance and advise.........

Mississippi River At Bettendorf, Iowa Residents React To Interstate 74 Bridge Demolition........
Work to remove the old Interstate 74 Bridge spanning the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities has begun and on Tuesday, officials released new details about the demolition process.
Officials with the I-74 bridge project have announced that the old span will not be imploded and some Quad Cities residents are a bit disappointed Resident Mary Scott says she would have liked to see the bridge blown up, but understands the environmental impact the implosion would have.
The Freeport, Illinois-based Helm Group will take the bridge apart piece-by-piece. Some explosives will be used on some small parts of the span. Officials say that this method of demolition will have the minimum effect on river traffic and cause the least amount of damage to the mussel population........

Fishy Tales From Kona, Hawaii Man Lands 250 Pound Marlin While On A Kayak........
Jason Freitas recently took the "ride of a lifetime" and made a catch of a lifetime while fishing off of his kayak off the coast of South Kona, Hawaii. He reeled in a 250 pound black marlin.
Freitas reports that it took him close to four hours to reel the monster marlin in because it dragged him for miles out to sea at speeds of up to seven miles per hour.
Freitas say that he was fishing for ahi or ono when he heard a big splash behind him. He turned to see a marlin jumping. He says that catching a marlin from a kayak has been on his bucket list. He celebrated his catch by smoking about 100 pounds of it for family and friends........

Lower Mississippi River Corps Analysis Says New River Cut Should Be Closed........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released an environmental assessment on Friday that looked a the effects of closing most of the newly formed Neptune Pass, which is diverting a portion of the Mississippi River through Plaquemines Parish.
The report states that without the construction of a flow control structure, conditions will continue to deteriorate, resulting in a threat to navigation. Since 2019, the major channel has grown to close to 850 feet wide and at some points 90 feet deep, diverting over one eighth of the river's flow.
The proposed stone control structure would restrict flow into the Neptune Pass to a 100 foot wide, 10 foot deep opening. The design will not be finalized until after a 30 day comment period. Project cost estimates will come after a design is approved........

Mississippi River Near West Alton, Missouri Corps, Partners Hosting River Stewardship Activities This Weekend........
On Saturday, September 24, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rivers Project Office is teaming up with local organizations to host several stewardship activities in celebration of National Public Lands Day.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rivers Project Office will hosting the Great Rivers Cleanup with the Piasa Palisades Sierra Club. Christine Favilla, co-coordinator of the Three Rivers Project of the Sierra Club Illinois says that so far, the Great Rivers Clean-up has removed 45 tons of trash and recycled 10 tons of materials.
Favilla adds that this year's event is the 16th annual river clean-up and it is hosted in honor of National Public Lands Day and provides an exciting opportunity for the community to protect and conserve the river that sustains us........

Paddling News From St. Charles, Missouri Second Portion Of St. Charles County "Blueway" Opening This Fall........
The second section of the Dardenne Creek Blueway is slated to be open by November. Since May, the Dardenne Creek Blueway has offered a kayaking and canoeing experience to paddlers of all levels of experience.
St. Charles County Parks Director Ryan Graham says that the blueway isn't an exciting whitewater rafting stream, but rather a relatively quiet way for people to get close to nature on a stream close to home.
The first 3.5 mile section of the blueway links Riverside Landing County Park along the Mississippi River with St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park. The second stage will link up to St. Peters Lone Wolf Park 5.2 miles to the southwest.......

Illinois RiverWatch, part of the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center recently announced the schedule for their virtual Fall Speaker Series, which will begin on October 4th and run into early November.
Danelle Haake, RiverWatch director and stream ecologist says that the speaker series offers people the opportunity to learn more about water via a series of online events.
The events will be held on Zoom and the schedule will be:

The NorthWestern Energy and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks announced that on September 25th, NorthWestern Energy will start drawing down the Rainbow Reservoir approximately 11 feet from the current full-pool level in order to replace wooden flash boards on the dam's face.
The wooden flash boards were last replaced in 2004 and are now leaking water, resulting in increased maintenance and repair work. Replacing the flash boards will reduce maintenance and will make the dam function more efficiently.
Jo Dee Black, spokesperson for NorthWestern Energy says that the drawdown will last about five days and the reservoir should return to full pool by October 6th........

Mississippi River Spirits A New Bourbon Aged On A Barge On The Mississippi River........
Multiple whiskeys have been aged on boats, trains and trucks, picking up their flavors through mobile maturation. O.H. Ingram does things a bit differently, they age their whiskey in a floating barrelhouse on the Mississippi River.
This is the second time that O.H. Ingram has released their flagship bourbon. The whiskey was distilled at Green River Distilling Co. in Owensboro, KY and is a selection of only eight barrels of mid-rye bourbon hand-picked by founder Hank Ingram.
The boat that the bourbon is aged on is moored to a riverbank in Ballard County, Kentucky and exposes the whisky to three important factors: The river's motion keeps the liquid sloshing around and interacting with the wood, there are significant temperature swings between night and day and the humidity level remains high meaning that there is less evaporation........

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri A Twenty Foot Tall Obelisk To Link Cape To The River........
Soon, a 20 foot tall obelisk will be placed at the corner of Broadway and Main in downtown Cape Girardeau, Missouri, providing a link between the city and the Mississippi River.
The gateway marker will be a three-sided monolith with a round planter at the base and topped with an eagle. The marker will be funded in part by the Downtown Cape Girardeau Community Improvement District.
One side of the marker will read "Cape Girardeau", the second "Mississippi River" and the third side will feature a narrative on the history of the Mississippi River and it's link to the city........

Ohio River At Cave-In-Rock, Illinois The Ohio River Pirate Cave........
While everyone has heard about the Pirates of the Caribbean, were you aware that at one time, there were pirates on the Ohio River? One their favorite hangouts was a cave near the current town of Cave-In-Rock, Illinois.
Prior tot he 1840s, the town was known as Rock and Cave, and it was renamed Cave-In-Rock on October 24, 1849. In 1901, it was incorporated as a village, and since then, it became a tiny river town with around 300 residents.
The Ohio River pirates operated a network of pillaging and thievery and the secluded cave carved in the river bluff made for a good hideout. The location eventually became a spot where alcohol was stored........

Mississippi River Near Myrtle Grove, Louisiana Louisiana Proceeds Towards Unprecedented Coastal Restoration Project........
An unprecedented project intended to combat the land loss along Louisiana's coast by diverting water and sediment from the Mississippi River into the Barataria Basin took a major step towards being approved with the release of a final environmental assessment by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The Corps' report on the $2 billion Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion Project breaks down how the flow of freshwater and sediment for as much as half the year into the basin will create over 20 square miles of new land in it's first 50 years of operation.
The study also looks at how the project will reduce the potential flooding in New Orleans-area west bank communities, and slightly increase the potential for flooding in communities downstream and significantly affect fisheries, oysters and bottlenose dolphins by increasing the freshwater levels in the basin........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Alton, Honke Properties To Discuss Marina Management........
For the past 15 years, Parrot Pointe Marine has operated the Alton Marina, however, their contract expires at the end of March. The company will not be renewing the contract at the end of this term.
The Alton City Council has authorized the Mayor and other city officials to initiate negotiations with Honke Properties in order to finalize a management contract for the marina.
According to Greg Caffey, Director of Development and Planning for the city, Honke Properties has been managing real estate in the Alton area for more than 20 years........

Tidbit Lake Of The Ozarks Surprising Trend For Boats Broken Down This Summer........
Each year, millions of people are drawn the Lake of the Ozarks to enjoy the seemingly infinite number of channels and coves winding through the green Ozark hills.
For some visitors, the enjoyment came to an abrupt halt when they found that their boat would not start. According to Lake Tow LLC, there was an interesting trend among calls.
This season, Lake Tow reported that they did not receive as many calls for mechanical breakdowns, however, they did see a huge spike in calls for dead batteries........

SPRINGFIELD,
Va., Sept. 26, 2022 – When recreational boats break down on the
water and need help getting home, the red boats of the TowBoatUS
towing fleet responded more than 90,000 times last year. For the
month of October, however, five red towboats across the United
States are going pink to bring the issue of Breast Cancer
Awareness to the water.
