Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Alton Riverfront Advisory Commission Founded........
David Goins, Mayor of Alton, Illinois recently presided over the first meeting of the city's riverfront advisory commission. The commission's purpose is to guide the city on growing and developing the riverfront.
Goins stated that the Mississippi River is Alton's front door and it should be enhanced as a meeting place, a place to provide transit services, be a recreational centerpiece for the region and guarantee the safe transfer of commodities.
Goins also noted that there is a possibility that three cruise ships could dock at Alton and a Port of Alton may be established.......

Fishing News Form Port Hudson Lake in Franklin County, Missouri Conservation Department Ticketed Angler Following Fishing Trip........
A woman from Gerald, Missouri recently took a fishing trip to Port Hudson Lake in rural Franklin County, Missouri, which ended up with a big catch as well as a ticket from the Missouri Department of Conservation.
60 year old Bonnie M. Blaue was fishing on Port Hudson Lake on the afternoon of March 9, 2022, when Missouri Department of Conservation officer Todd Wright asked to see her haul.
One of the fish was a 12 inch bass, which is in violation of Missouri's state hunting and fishing codes. Last week, Blaue was formally charged with one count of taking fish of unauthorized length from a conservation area. The charge is a misdemeanor........

Mississippi River Near Memphis, Tennessee $1 Million In Fed Funding Awarded To Sultana Disaster Museum........
The Sultana Disaster Museum in Marion, Arkansas, just across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tennessee, was recently awarded $1 million if federal funding from the American Rescue Plan.
The museum, which commemorates the worst maritime disaster in United States history, the burning and sinking of the steamboat Sultana, had been located in a small building since 2015. There are plans in the works to construct a larger building on downtown Marion.
On April 27, 1865, the Sultana exploded, burned and sank in the Mississippi River about 7 miles from Memphis. The 260 foot long vessel was only rated to carry 376 passengers however, it was overloaded with more than 2,000 recently released Union prisoners of war.
The vessel's boilers exploded just after leaving Memphis. About 1,195 of the 2,200 passengers and crew died........

Dardenne Creek Cleanup After Levee Breach........
More than a foot of rainfall fell over St. Charles County on Tuesday morning and Dardenne Creek crested at 23.5 inches, putting it in major flood stage.
On Wednesday, with water levels reseeding, a portion of the
creek’s levee was breached sending flood water into nearby farm
fields.

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri American Queen Riverboat Docks at City........
The American Queen recently docked in Cape Girardeau, bringing in visitors from all across the nation. They were able to see the sights around the river city by taking bus tours or just by walking around.
Officials with VisitCape say that the majority of visitors come by car, and those who arrive by boat are welcome as well., Brenda Newbern, the VisitCape Director says that the town is very welcoming and that the Riverfront is Cape's "front door".
The next riverboat scheduled to call upon Cape Girardeau is the American Splendor, which is scheduled to arrive on Saturday, June 30th........

Lower Mississippi River Controlling Depth Increased To 50 Feet Through New Orleans........
For the first time in history, the controlling depth for the first 125 river miles of the Mississippi River Ship Channel has been set at 50 feet. This goal was reached less than two years after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' New Orleans District started deepening the channel from 47 feet to 50 feet.
Sean Duffy, Executive Director of the Big River Coalition says that Mississippi River Ship Channel from the jetty end of the Southwest Pass to the upriver limit of the Port of New Orleans is now set at 50 feet in accordance with Congressional authorization.
Duffy adds that the maximum draft decreases to 49 feet from the Port of New Orleans to Mississippi River Mile Marker 175 above the Head of Passes at Smoke Bend until additional adjustments are made........

Lake Of The Ozarks Boaters Save Captain After A Powerboat Flipped and Sank........
Shortly before 8:30 am Sunday morning, Jo Kremsreiter of Wentzville and Matt Swain of O'Fallon were headed to Paradise Tropical Restaurant for breakfast when they witnessed a powerboat flip and sink near the 20 Mile Marker on the Lake of the Ozarks' Main Channel.
As the men approached the sinking vessel, they spotted the captain bobbing in the water. He was conscious, wearing his life jacket, and other than some lower back pain, he was uninjured.
Kremsreiter said the rescued captain was concerned with leaving debris in the water after the accident, so, they cleaned up the water, with the help of another passer-by on a Sea-Doo. Kremsreiter added that you have to love the boating community, where a guy is worried about littering the water after being in an accident........

Boat Manufacturer Polaris Revenue Rose 38 Percent During Second Quarter........
Polaris, the parent company of Bennington, Godfrey and Hurricane brands recently reported an increase in marine revenue during their second quarter, in addition to improving profit margins within the segment.
Revenues in Polaris' marine segment increased by 38 percent during the second quarter to $273 million from $197.6 million in the second quarter of 2021. The gross profit margin rose from 24 percent to 24.4 percent.
The increase in marine sales were driven by higher prices and an improvement in unit volumes. Polaris also increased their overall company earnings guidance for the entire year........

Dardenne Creek Near St. Peters, Missouri Levee Breached After Flooding........
The historic rainfall in the St. Louis region has caused flood damage to many roads, shelters and homes across the state. another casualty of the heavy rainfall is the Dardenne Creek levee breached north of St. Peters in St. Charles County.
Officials report that the water went through the gap in the levee and across Highway C. The floodwater washed out part of the roadway and flooded fields on the other side. No homes were reported to have been in danger.
Captain Chris Hunt of the St. Charles County Police Department says that the water was racing through the breach at 7,000 cubic feet per second, which they say is a record. He advised that people avoid the area........

Nashville, Illinois Reservoir Secondary Dam Breached ........
The Washington County, Illinois Emergency Management Agency reports that a secondary dam of the Nashville Reservoir failed in Tuesday following the recent heavy rainfall.
EMA Director Matt Bierman says that even though the secondary dam breached, it did what it was supposed to do. He added that the breach helped relieve pressure from the reservoir's primary dam, which is holding steady.
The dam breach did flood approximately 40 acres, including Illinois State Route 15. Bierman said that residents of two or three homes voluntarily left their property for drier ground.........

A Little "River Des Peres" History
In 1700, Two Jesuit missionaries set up a camp near a small stream that flowed into the Mississippi River. It was named the River of the Fathers, the River Des Peres. After 3 years, the mission was abandoned,
The headwaters of the River Des Peres were in present-day Creve Coeur and Normandy. It flowed through the countryside, joining the Mississippi River at Carondelet. Urban growth eventually made the stream into a flood-prone sewer. In 1904, it's path through Forest Park was encased in a wooden culvert for the World's Fair.
In 1923, city voters adopted an $87 million bond issue which included $11 million to tame the River Des Peres. Crews using steam shovels, horse teams and men swinging picks worked for more than a decade to route the river underground through Forest Part and into a 9 mile long open channel to the Mississippi River
On August 19, 2015, heavy rainfall blew into the St. Louis region, setting the previous rainfall record. The River Des Peres overflowed it's banks and inundated it's surroundings from Forest Park to Carondelet. Some 1,025 dwellings were damaged or destroyed.........

Gasconade River In Osage County, Missouri MSHP: Sun Blinded Boater In Fatal Accident........
Missouri officials state that a 46 year old boater was blinded by the sun and did not see a tree in his path along the Gasconade River in Osage County, Missouri prior to striking it Saturday evening.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Troopers responded to the boat crash shortly after 7 pm Saturday. The boat operator. identified as Melvin Gibson of Owensville, was pronounced dead at 8 pm.
Officials report that Gibson had been operating a 1988 Shoal Runner boat on the Gasconade when he struck the tree approximately 5 miles downstream from the U.S. 50 bridge. The sun was setting at the time of the accident........

Lake Of The Ozarks Sunset Hills Police Chief Arrested For Suspected BWI Last Month........
Last month, a Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper arrested Sunset Hills Police Chief Stephen Dodge on the Lake of the Ozarks after stopping him for not displaying the proper navigation lights on his boat. He was arrested on suspicion of boating while intoxicated.
According to Dodge's attorney, Travis Noble, Chief Dodge was not intoxicated and did not refuse to take a breathalyzer test. Camden County Judge Michael Joseph Gilley dismissed the case without prejudice on July 1.
MSHP Corporal Green says that their investigation into possible criminal charges is still pending and has not yet been presented to the Camden County Prosecuting Attorney's Office........

On Monday, the American Queen tied up along the Alton Riverfront and was in need of refueling. Two tanker trucks from Energy Petroleum were in Riverfront Park to handle the refueling duties.
The American Queen is the flagship of American Queen Voyages and is the largest steamboat paddlewheeler ever constructed. The 418 foot long paddlewheeler was christened in Memphis, Tennessee in 2012........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Amphitheater Chairman Hopes Liberty Bank Remains Main Sponsor........
For the past eight years, Liberty Bank has been the title sponsor for the Alton Amphitheater, however, their contract is up at the end of the year. This fall, the Alton Amphitheater Commission will be looking for title sponsorship.
Dan Herkert, Chairman of the Amphitheater Commission says that he is hopeful that Liberty Bank would like to return again. He adds that the relationship with Liberty Bank could not be better and they have been wonderful to work with since 2014.
Since 2014, Liberty Bank has renewed their sponsorship twice........

Mississippi River Management Diverting The Mississippi To Fight Western Drought Fraught With Problems........
With the western portions of the United States experiencing a megadrought, people are desperately trying to come up with long-term solutions. One suggestion that has been floated many times is to divert a portion of the Mississippi or Missouri River to feed the Colorado Basin.
One problem with this potential solution is that the Midwestern states have no incentive to allow for the diversion. Another issue is that conditions are dry in the Midwest too, with many areas sliding into moderate drought conditions.
According to Joanna Allhands, the Mississippi River diversion plan wouldn't work, as it would be too costly and would not produce enough water to fix the West's water issues........

Fishing News From Michigan Angler Reels In Rare Golden Smallmouth Bass........
Indiana native Josh Chrenko was vacationing in Michigan when he reeled in a fish that is among the rarest in the nation for it's genetic condition which causes odd coloring.
Chrenko was fishing for smallmouth bass in the Muskegon River near Newaygo, Michigan when he caught a smallmouth with golden coloring. This genetic condition is called Xanthism, which happens when yellow pigments are expressed more than usual in the skin of an animal.
Jay Wesley, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources fisheries division, Lake Michigan basin coordinator says that the condition is rare, but it has been seen in the Muskegon River before.........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Major Rehabilitation Project Starts On The MacArthur Bridge........
Crews began a major rehabilitation project on the MacArthur Bridge, which carries rail traffic across the Mississippi River between downtown St. Louis and Illinois.
The rehab project involves the replacement of the bridge's worn steel girders that were constructed in 1912. The bridge carries freight traffic and Amtrak passenger trains.
This project will bring the MacArthur Bridge up to current rail standards and will allow longer and wider railroad cars onto the approach. The new girders will extend the life of the bridge, which opened in 1917, to around 2085........

Ohio River At Cincinnati, Ohio Coast Guard Investigating Barge/Boat Collision........
The United States Coast Guard is investigating a collision between a barge and a pleasure boat along the Ohio River. The incident occurred early on the morning of July 10th. There were five people aboard the pleasure boat at the time of the collision.
Phil Leconte says that he was sitting in the captain's seat in the boat, which was tied up 60 feet off the Ohio River shoreline, when he heard churning water and a loud noise. He turned to find a barge mere inches from his face.
Leconte says that the radar arch was smashed and the side of the boat caved inwards. He adds that the port side was listing downward and part of the vessel was going underneath the barge........

Missouri River At Jefferson City, Missouri MoDOT Performing Maintenance On U.S. Route 54 Bridges........
On Sunday, the Missouri Department of Transportation began maintenance work on the U.S. Route 54 Missouri River Bridge in Jefferson City. MoDOT says that while the work is being done, one bridge at a time will be reduced to a single lane of traffic.
The maintenance project is scheduled to begin on Sunday, July 24th and will be carried out between 6:30 pm and 5:00 am. The project is expected to be completed by July 28th.
Crews also will be closing the entrance ramps from McCarty Street and Main Street to Eastbound Route 54, as well as the entrance ramp from Route W to Westbound Route 54. All work will be weather permitting........

Missouri River In Holt County, Missouri Teen Dies While Trying To Assist Another Swimmer........
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that on Saturday, an Oregon, Missouri teenager died after drowning in the Missouri River in Holt County, Missouri.
The MSHP says that 18 year old Alexander Harris was swimming in the Missouri River about a half mile north of Payne's Landing when he tried to assist another swimmer in distress.
Harris went below the surface of the river and did not resurface. He was pronounced deceased by the Holt County Coroner........

Black River In Poplar Bluff, Missouri Body Recovered From The Black River Saturday........
At around 4 pm Saturday evening, a body was spotted in the Black River in Poplar Bluff by some kayakers. According to Coroner Jim Akers, the body appears to have been in the water for two to three days.
The body is that of an adult white male wearing a black T-shirt and jeans. Because of the condition of the body, photographs and fingerprints have not been useful in identifying the body.
The man is estimated to be between 30 to 50 years old and is either bald or balding with several days of beard growth. Akers says that there were no tattoos, scars or marks on the body to help with identification.........

Added Sunday Benefit For The Blessing Of The Fleet Mississippi River at Alton Marina........
The Committee for the Blessing of the Fleet held a pool party Saturday afternoon at the Alton Marina to raise money for this year's event ! We had a really good turnout considering the temperatures and most in attendance had plenty of pool time.
T-shirt sales were good as well as the raffle tickets sales. Thanks everyone for your support. The Grand Raffle had prizes of...$1,500, $1,000 and $500....and we had 3 happy winners, plus more winners of additional prizes from loacal businesses and committee members. The proceeds cover the costs of putting on the 2022 Blessing of the Fleet and monies are donated to "Our Lady of the Rivers Shrine" and the local fire departments.
Tom and Lou Lenkman auctioned off a beautiful one of a kind 2022 Blessing of the Fleet Rum Decanter. Tom hand crafted it and special mixed the rum himself.
Hats Off to the "D" Dock DJs for providing the great music, to Karen and the Alton Marina crew for their hospitality and to the 2022 Blessing of the Fleet Committee.

Added Sunday Missouri River Near Jefferson City, Missouri Proposed Site Of New Port Shifts North and West Of Jeff City........
The focus on the location of a new Missouri RIver port has shifted to the north and west of Jefferson City. On Thursday, the Heartland Port Authority members voted to consider establishing a port in Cole COunty at Cole Junction or in the 63 Bottoms near Renz Farm Road in Callaway County.
The shift to consider Cole Junction and 63 Bottoms came after members of the board and representatives of Barr Engineering discussed feasibility for ports at the site and their availability over the past several months.
The pros for the sites are that they are both large enough for future expansion and the final size of both sites has yet to be determined. Officials note that several landowners were receptive to development at Cole Junction........

Added Sunday Illinois River At Havana, Illinois Wind Turbine Components Unloaded At Havana Port........
Starting in June, some of the large wind turbine parts have been arriving at the Havana, Illinois Regional Port via barge and rail, from where they will be trucked the final distance to the Glacial Sands Wind Project in Mason County, IL.
In early June, the first shipment of turbine blades arrived by barge at Havana. The turbine blades were off-loaded at the Havana Wind Turbine Dock, which is a former coal station.
The Havana Regional Port District was created in 1990 and is located in central Illinois. The port calculates that their marine cargo activity supports 1,384 jobs within the state, generating $89.4 million in wages........

The Twisted Cat Fishing Series recently stopped in Cape Girardeau, Missouri bringing in some 60 fishing teams, all with the mission to reel in the largest catfish.
Tournament director Alex Nagy says that the tournament brings in money for the region, helping the regional economy. He notes that some teams arrive in town early to "pre-fish" the river in an effort to determine where the fish are biting.
The Twisted Cat Fishing Series tournament is scored on a points scale and the team with the highest number of points wins $4,000........

Added Sunday Mississippi River Management Controversial Plan Could Restore Lost Lands.........
For thousands of years, the Mississippi River has deposited soils sourced from the Mississippi River Basin into the Gulf of Mexico, forming a delta, where the water forked multiple paths into the Gulf.
Now, the river is restrained into a single channel. As such, the river is no longer depositing sediment according to hydrological whims, but rather dumping the sediment load into the abyss.
The Louisiana State government is looking to open a gap in the levee in order to divert some of the muddy Mississippi River back into the marshes, allowing the river to resume it's land building duties........

Mississippi River At Hartford, Illinois New Park In The Works For Confluence Tower........
Earlier this month, the Village of Hartford was awarded $90,000 via an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development Grant from the state and it seems that there will be a new park at the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower.
Colman's Country Campers purchased the land surrounding the tower and has donated the plat directly in front of the tower adjacent to the highway for the creation of a new park.
Cory Jobe, President and CEO of the Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau says that the park will feature amenities such as a walking trail, picnic stations, some shelters and a bike rack........

Meramec River In Franklin County, Missouri 65 Year Old Man Drowned After Kayak Capsized........
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that on Thursday, a 65 year old Lawrence Krumrey of Chesterfield, Missouri drowned after his kayak capsized in the Meramec River in Franklin County.
Krumrey was not wearing a life jacket. A friend was able to eventually pull Krumrey from the river. He was pronounced dead at around 11:30 am........

Viking Cruises recently announced that there have been additional delays in the completion of the new cruise ship that will be Cruising the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St. Louis.
Due to the delay in delivery, Viking Cruises has canceled the two planned Mississippi River trips during August. Viking had previously canceled two trips in July.
Viking has announced that they will have six trips this fall, September 1st, 5th, 15th and 19th and October 13th and 17th........

Holston River Near Knoxville, Tennessee Boater Shot By Men Drinking, Firing Guns........
A group of five men was taken into custody after a boater was accidentally shot along the Holston River near Knoxville, Tennessee. Reportedly, the men were drinking and shooting guns at a small target on the riverbank when the incident occurred.
The boater was traveling parallel to the five men when he was shot in the hip. A witness allegedly told officers that they had observed several rounds had struck the water prior to the victim being shot.
The boater was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with life-threatening injuries........

Mississippi River Near Sartell, Minnesota Woman Rescued From The River, Then Arrested........
What began as a rescue along the Mississippi River at Sartell, Minnesota ended up with an arrest. The Sartell Police department reports that at around 9:30 pm Monday evening, responders were called out to the river for a report of a woman tubing on the river being swept away with the current.
According to the tuber's friend, the last time she saw her, the tuber was grabbing onto branches trying to keep from being carried further downstream. As responders were entering the water, the friend's phone rang and it was the tuber.
The wayward tuber was found in thick brush along a steep bank and brought up to safety. The Stearns County Sheriff's Office discovered that the tuber had two felony warrants and she was taken to jail.........

Grafton Ferry
The Grafton Ferry is open for the season
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry

Mississippi River At Portage Des Sioux, Missouri Boat Hoist Salvaged From Lockhaven, Relocated To Longshot Marina........
Reportedly, a large piece of machinery best described as a boat lift has been sitting idle in a parking lot in Lockhaven since the 1960s. It is believed to be fully functional and has been relocated to Longshot Marina in Portage Des Sioux., Missouri.
Moving the hoist was quite the project, as it was towed down to Grafton, loaded onto a ferry and carried across the Mississippi River to it's new home. St. Louis based Ambition Towing headed up the hoist's relocation.
After Piasa Harbor closed down for good, the hoist was slated to be scrapped. A group of individuals got together to purchase the hoist from the Great Rivers Land Trust. They paid scrap pricing, which came to be about $5,000........

Ohio River Near Evansville, Indiana Mystery Camper Stranded On A Sandbar........
There is a vehicle parked on a sandbar in the Ohio River in Evansville, Indiana once again and it has created a bit of a furor on social media. A few years ago, a truck was parked on a sandbar. This time, it is a camper and it's origins are unknown.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is tasked with maintaining a shipping channel along the Ohio River and their dredging operations keep the river open for barge traffic.
The sediment is pumped out of the channel, building up and forming a sandbar. The sandbar is an island, so how the camper ended up on the island is a mystery........

Boat Manufacturer Hercules Electric Mobility, Coach Marine Team Up On Pontoons........
Hercules Electric Mobility recently announced that they have teamed up with Coach Marine Group. They will be supplying electric propulsion systems for Coach and Xcursion pontoon boat lines.
According to a statement, the companies have entered into the final design and integration phase, where they will be mating the Hercules e-Drive system to the boats.
Coach Marine states that these pontoon boats will have a top end speed of over 40 miles per hour and will offer approximately 12 hours of cruising time between charges........

Grafton Ferry
The Grafton Ferry is open for the season
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Officials Considering Lighting The Arch For Ukraine........
The Gateway Arch may be illuminated in support of the Ukrainian people, as the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Gateway Solidarity Act. The legislation comes after several months of buildings, statues and structures being lit around the globe to show support of the Ukraine after the Russian invasion.
Congresswoman Ann Wagner's bill will allow the Arch to be illuminated for no fewer than 5 days in 2022 and should be lit 15 days after the act is passed,. After that, it will be lit on August 24th each year in blue and yellow on Ukrainian Independence Day until Russia stops their attack.
Back in 2004, the Gateway Arch began commemorating Breast Cancer Awareness Month after Congress passed legislation to light the monument t in pink. In 2015, the Department of the Interior approved lighting the Arch in gold to commemorate the monument's 50th anniversary........

Missouri Fishing News Man Caught Record Sunfish With A Bow.........
The Missouri Department of Conservation reports that Andrew Hunt is now the new record holder after catching a redear sunfish using an alternative method. He caught the fish on June 4th while bowfishing on Lake Taneycomo. The fish weighed in at 2 pounds, 2 ounces.
The redear sunfish can be found in Missouri, south of the Missouri River. It has been widely stocked in the region's waterways. The fish is also known as the shellcracker, bream and stumpknocker.
The redear sunfish is a close relative of the bluegill and has an olive or golden color with a prominent black spot on the earflap with an orange accent........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer Volvo Penta Reports Record Second Quarter Results........
Volvo Group, the parent company of Volvo Penta, recently announced that they had posted record second quarter results for their marine propulsion division.
The Volvo Group president and CEO Martin Lundstedt says that Volvo Penta continued to perform well, with good demand for both marine and industrial engines.
During the second quarter, net sales increased 16 percent to $437.9 million, a record for a single quarter. Adjusted operating income increased 13 percent to $6.65 million compared to a year ago........

Missouri River Near Rocheport, Missouri Two Men Charges In Thefts From Bridge Construction Site........
Two men have been charged after allegedly stealing more than $70,000 worth of tools and other items from the construction site of the new Missouri River Bridge at Rocheport, Missouri.
Officials report that Cooper County prosecutor has charged Joshua Coates and Ryan Dickinson with stealing - motor vehicle/watercraft/aircraft. Investigators spoke with the construction company, who claim that tools, a trail camera, bore welder, plasma cutter, welding helmet and other items were stolen.
Law enforcement investigators reportedly found $22,500 worth of stolen items in storage at one location, and $40,000 worth of stolen equipment at Coates' residence.........

Grafton Ferry
The Grafton Ferry is open for the season
Hours are Friday 10am-10pm, Saturday 8am-10pm and Sunday 8am to 8pm. Will not be open on Thursday this year, just not enough traffic.
The ferry carries passengers from St. Charles, Mo., to
Grafton. The Illinois side of the landing is located near
the Grafton Lighthouse and public boat ramp off Market
Street. The landing on the Missouri side is at Grafton Ferry
Road, which is just off of Highway 94.
