Boating Lifestyle

Number Of New Boater Surged During 2020........

2020 has so far been quite an odd year, but one thing is for certain, there was a huge influx of new boat buyers in the recreational boating market.  The question remains, is whether they will stick with it.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, many recreational plans and options were dashed, prompting Americans to look elsewhere for recreation.  Hitting ht water aboard a boat seemed to satisfy many of the social distancing recommendations, while getting people out of the house.

The sudden surge of first time boat buyers has reversed the decade-long trend of new boaters decreasing, however, the pandemic has left the recreational boating industry trying to meet demands........

River History....

November 30, 1835 in River History

Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on this day in Florida, Missouri. Better known by his pen name Mark Twain.
He is one of Missouri's favorite native son's. The man was born in Florida, Mo, lived in Hannibal, Mo and St. Louis Mo.

He was a riverboat captain, a journalist, a lecturer (comic) and an author.

He lived most of his boyhood years on the banks of the Mississippi River in Hannibal, Mo and the town and its inhabitants became the subjects of Mark Twain's later famous writings........ especially The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

At the age of seventeen Samuel Clemens went to work on the Mississippi River and later became a steamboat pilot.

His pen name ....."Mark Twain" came from his years on the river. When two fathoms or 12 feet of water were measured on the sounding line the words "Mark Twain" were called out to the riverboat captain... meaning ..."Safe Water."

American Cruise Lines Reveals New Riverboat Interior Designs........

American Cruise Lines recently unveiled the new interior designs of their new class of modern riverboats, which are set to cruise the Mississippi River this coming cruise season.

According to Charles Robertson, president and CEO of American Cruise Lines, the new interior design concept for the modern riverboats is the next evolution of the series.

Robertson ads that the riverboats will feature the graceful structural innovations that were introduced with the first riverboats in the series, including the patented opening bow and retractable gangway, the glass atriums and the 100 percent private balcony accommodations.........

Corps and The Nature Conservancy Forming New Atchafalaya River Project...

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is teaming up with the environmental group, The Nature Conservancy to better regulate the flow of the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers with the new Atchafalaya River Project.

Scientists with The Nature Conservancy will be working with the Corps in testing whether altering the flows of the Atchafalaya River can improve the last great overflow swamp in the nation.

The focus of the project will be at the Old River Control Structure, where by law, 30 percent of the Mississippi River's flow is diverted into the Atchafalaya River.  For more than 50 years, the structure has prevented the Mississippi River from changing course, and has always been utilized for flood control.  TNC scientists are considering using the Old River Control Structure for more than flood control........

Click here to read this news column from iberianet.com.  With Photo.

The Old River Control Structure is a floodgate system that was completed in 1963.  It controls the amount of water flowing into the Atchafalaya River from the Mississippi River, thereby preventing the Mississippi River from changing course.  Source:  Wikipedia Online Encyclopedia.  Click here to read more.

The Atchafalaya River is a "distributary" of the Mississippi River...

From Wikipedia:

A distributary, or a distributary channel, is a stream that branches off and flows away from a main stream channel. Distributaries are a common feature of river deltas. The phenomenon is known as river bifurcation. The opposite of a distributary is a tributary. Distributaries are found where a stream nears a lake or an ocean. They can also occur inland, on alluvial fans, or where a tributary stream bifurcates as it nears its confluence with a larger stream. In some cases, a minor distributary can divert so much water from the main channel that it can become the main route.

Hello Bill, and all,

Went up to Grafton Harbor last week to see the 1935 Henry C Grebe & Co yacht “NAIDA”. Very seldom do you see a boat of that vintage on the river. Grebe built boats at their shipyard on the north branch of the Chicago River from 1926-1994. They built yachts for the wealthy and ships for the U.S. navy. NAIDA is of modest size as many of their yachts were over 100 foot. Their larger boats were built bow facing south and stern north because after a sideways launch into the Chicago River there was no way to turn them around. They would head downriver then to all parts of the world. Many are still in service today.

A Look Back At Boats That Hauled Calhoun County Apples........

Calhoun County is a narrow peninsula situated between the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.  The region is perhaps best known for it's orchards that grow peaches during the summer and apples in the fall, and as a result, the county has a bit of history involving steamboats hauling apples.

The sternwheeler D.H. Pike was built in 1883 and was originally called the Benton McMillin.  The riverboat worked the Cumberland River for several years prior to moving to the Ohio River to operate in the Pittsburgh - Cincinnati trade in 1886.  In 1888, The Eagle Packet Company purchased the vessel, lengthened the hull, renamed it the D.H. Pike and it operated in the St. Louis - Peoria trade.

THe Belle of Calhoun was constructed in 1895 by the Carondelet Marine Ways and completed along the St. Louis Levee.  The vessel was owned by the Clarksville Packet Company and was named for Miss Anna Wood, who was named the Belle of Calhoun County.  After changing hands and names a few times, the Belle of Calhoun sank in 1914 four miles above Alton, Illinois with 4,700 barrels of apples aboard.  Most of the cargo was recovered, but around 800 barrels were lost........

St. Louis' "Three Rivers" Flag Voted Coolest City Flag........

Back in May, a competition was held on Twitter, looking to determine which city in the United States had the "coolest" city flag.  St. Louis was originally seeded as number 64 out of 64 cities, but went on to with the top honors.

The battle for the title of "Coolest US City Flag" came down to St. Louis versus Tulsa, Oklahoma.  St. Louis won the title by a final vote of 94 percent to 6 percent.

The St. Louis flag is also known as the "Three Rivers Flag" as it symbolizes the confluence of the Missouri, Mississippi and Meramec Rivers.  The Fleur-de-lis in the center pays homage to the city's French heritage........

River Ferry Busy After Fiery Accident Closed Brent Spence Bridge........

Ever since the Brent Spence Bridge was closed following a fiery crash between two trucks, the Anderson Ferry has been busy carrying vehicles across the Ohio River.

Captain John James pilots the Anderson Ferry's Boone No.9 across the Ohio River approximately 9 times per hour.  A typical afternoon trip would see about three or four cars per trip, but since the bridge closed, the ferry is carrying up to 15 cars per trip.

Captain James says that 15 is the maximum number of cars that are able to fit on the Boone No.9, which is Anderson Ferry's larges ferryboat.  The Anderson Ferry usually carries between 400 and 500 cars per day, but now that number has roughly doubled........

Boat Builders Designing Boats To Handle Modern Outboards........

Modern high-horsepower outboard engines are heavy and they are capable of producing tremendous amounts of power and torque, which are three characteristics that boatbuilders are having to master.

Back in 2018, Kevin Burns, the vice president of design and product development for Sabre Yachts and Back Cove Yachts was at the helm of a prototype of the company's first outboard offering, the Back Cove 340.

Burns said that the first 340 was rigged with twin Suzuki 350s on it's transom.  He says that they got it over 40 knots, and turned so hard that the engines broke free and spun the boat out.  No one was hurt, but part of the testing process was to find what the limits are........

In addition to the two new riverboats, ACL will be running two existing paddlewheelers along the Mississippi River in 2021, the America and the Queen of the Mississippi.

Fiery Wreck Caused Bridge, River Shutdown........

Earlier this month, a wreck and subsequent fire on a major bridge spanning the Ohio River near Cincinnati, Ohio has caused the closure of the span and the river below.  The river may have reopened, but the bridge will likely not reopen until late December.

Emergency repairs are underway on the Brent Spence Bridge in Covington, Kentucky.  Mark Policinski, CEO of the Ohio Kentucky Indiana Regional Council of Governments says that the worst thing that could've happened to their transportation system indeed happened.

The accident caused a fireball on the bridge that was burning at 1,500 degrees.  THe fire occurred over the navigation channel, so the Coast Guard closed the Ohio River for 1 mile in each direction for 36 hours as a precaution........

Corps Calls For Caution In Prepping For 2021 Mo. River Runoff........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District is calling on the public to keep an eye on the Missouri River Basin as the winter months and the 2021 run-off season is approaching.

Officials with the Corps say that there have been major strides made in repairing more than 350 miles of levees along the Lower Missouri River Basin that sustained damage following the historic 2019 flooding.

There is an increased level of flood risk remaining for communities that are behind the damaged levees, as repair work is ongoing.  The risk will remain until all components of the levee system are repaired........

31 Indicted For Test Score Fixing Scheme........

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana recently announced a round of indictments for 31 people involved in an alleged test score-fixing scheme at a U.S. Coast Guard exam center in Mandeville, Louisiana.

The indictments are centered around Dorothy Smith, a former credentialing specialist at the regional exam center in Mandeville.  Between 2001 and August 2019, Smith was employed with the U.S. Coast Guard and tested with entering scores for exams mariners must take to obtain licenses that allow them to serve in various positions on vessels, such as master, mate and engineer.

The indictment claims that Smith was working with two former Coast Guard employees and four maritime industry workers in a score-fixing scheme for over seven years, where bribes were accepted for falsifying test scores........

Hi Bill,
I was so excited to see that Okie Moore is here to pull out the sunken barge at Hoppie’s! Then we can start getting set up again to sell gas and operate as a full-service marina! It’s not a cheap undertaking and Fern and Hoppie appreciate all the donations that have helped make this possible. Things are looking up! It’s truly something to be grateful for. Happy Thanksgiving!

See you on the river!

Riverboats At The Gateway Arch Canceling Remainder Of Season........

Officials with Riverboats at the Gateway Arch have announced that they are canceling all holiday cruises and will be ending the 2020 cruise season on Sunday, November 29 citing increased concerns related to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Robert Hopkins, the Director of Operations says that the health and safety of passengers and team members is their highest priority, and they have been working hard to guarantee that the riverboats are a fun and safe destination for friends and families to enjoy a trip along the Mississippi River.

Hopkins adds that the dynamic nature of the COVID-19 pandemic has forced officials to re-evaluate their plans for the remainder of the 2020 season.  Ticket holders will be refunded in full for cancelled river cruises........

Atlantic Ocean Near St. Augustine, Florida

Receding Sands Reveal Shipwreck Remains........

Researchers are thinking that a shipwreck that recently surfaced near Crescent Beach is probably the remains of a cargo ship called Caroline Eddy, which was run aground by a hurricane in the late 1880s.

Chuck Meide, director of the St. Augustine Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program, says that analysis of the remains combined with research make the wreck a "strong candidate" for identification as a merchant ship that sank in the area in 1880.

Meide says that the shipwreck may very well be remains of the Caroline Eddy.  He adds that the remains are definitely those of a hull of a ship, even though there is no keel present.  Meide says that could be due to the vessel being broken up........

Boat Manufacturing

Boat Building Slows During September........

The National Marine Manufacturers Association recently reported that new boat manufacturing during September slowed for the second consecutive month, following a summer of increases.  New boat shipments are expected to rebound as parts suppliers begin to catch up to demand.

Vicky Yu, the NMMA director of business intelligence says that September saw a boat manufacturing slowdown, there was the construction and shipment of over 90,000 boats, a year-over-year increase of 4 percent, that were built and shipped from July through September.

Yu says that the summer bump in construction led to supplier shortfalls.  She expects to find that supplies have been replenished during October and manufacturers are able to once again meet consumer demand........

Boat Sales

2020 May End Up With Over 300,000 Boat Registrations........

During October, new boat registrations were up by 9.5 percent in the main boat categories year-to-date, building upon this summer's boat buying rush.  Registrations were up 28.1 percent year-over-year according to Statistical Surveys Inc.

Ryan Kloppe, sales director for SSI says that every boat segment is positive.  He notes that even the challenged house and sailboat segments were up during October.  Six houseboats were registered during October, compared to 1 during October 2019.  71 sailboats were registered, compared to 69 during October 2019.

Kloppe said that Florida and Texas were up big, pointing to pontoon boats, which are up by 48 percent.  Kloppe states that there likely won't be too much more demand with just November and December left, but he does believe that there is some pent-up demand and the numbers will continue to increase........

Even though COVID-19 precautions have prompted a cancellation of group events this winter, bald eagles will still be visiting Missouri waterways in search of two of their main winter food sources, fish and migrating waterfowl.

Mississippi River Pump Proposal Prompts Strong Reactions........

Farmers, rural business owners and Mississippi politicians from both sides of the aisle have been speaking out in support of a proposed flood control project that would pump water from portions of the south Delta.

Environmental groups are still opposed to the Yazoo Backwater Project.  For several decades, they have claimed that the project would be an expensive boondoggle that would harm wetlands to help agribusiness.

In mid-October, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers posted a new draft environmental impact statement that supports the pump project.  This report was a reversal of a previous report that had stated that he project would harm wetlands........

News Release From BoatUS

On Giving Tuesday, ‘Bring On Another Thousand’ Means Boaters Can Give Back
Support nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water
ANNAPOLIS, Md., Nov. 23, 2020 – Giving Tuesday, the annual global movement that encourages people to do good, will again reveal the world’s generosity on December 1. For boaters wishing to make boating safer and waters cleaner, donating to the BoatUS Foundation’s “B.O.A.T. – Bring On Another Thousand” Giving Tuesday fundraiser helps makes boating better for all recreational boaters.

“While we aren’t asking for $1,000 from a single person, we are asking for your support,” said BoatUS Foundation Assistant Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner. “Funds go to help us put more than 140,000 children in life jackets with our Kids Life Jacket Loaner program, educate over 240,000 boaters a year with our free online boating safety course, and provide programs to help keep marine debris out of our waterways. Your donation also supports our fishing line recycling efforts, EPIRB rental program and more.”

Go to BoatUSFoundation.givingfuel.com/2020-giving-tuesday-mc to donate. All donations are tax deductible.

Low Water Plagues Mid-Mississippi as Missouri Releases Slowing........

Low water conditions and shoaling have slowed cargo shipments along the middle Mississippi River just below the confluence of the Missouri River at St. Louis, Missouri, just as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to reduce the Missouri River navigation releases for the season at the end of November.

The Missouri River navigation flow support season typically ends on December 1 at the mouth of the Missouri River. The releases from the Gavins Point Dam typically range between 12,000 and 17,000 cubic feet per second during the winter.

2020 was not a normal navigation season, as last year's flooding left behind huge silt deposits that has caused shoaling and prompted light loading and delays along the Lower Missouri River and on portions of the Mississippi River........

IDNR Hosting Meeting On Illinois' Water Plan........

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources recently announced that they will be hosting three public meetings in order to discuss the state's efforts to update the State Water Plan.  The live virtual Q and A meetings will be held on December 1, 2 and 3, 2020.

Colleen Callahan, Director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources says that the IDNR is heading up the efforts to update the state's 40 year old water plan, and as part of that process, members of the task force made up from state agencies and stakeholders will host three public meetings to collect feedback and answer questions.

The meetings will be held at varying times in order to maximize participation.  Each meeting will cover the same information, which will allow participants to choose the date and time that best suits them........

What To Do When There Are Issues With The Boat Or It's Equipment........

When consumers purchase products, from gadgets to cars to homes and boats, they reasonably expect that those items will operate and hold up as advertised.  Sometimes, however, things happen and the item malfunctions or breaks.

Everyone has heard about lemon laws, but many people don't realize that state lemon laws typically do not apply to boats.  State lemon laws are mostly limited to cars, trucks and SUVs.

Boats are included in the Federal Warranty Law, known as the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975, which requires manufactures to clearly describe the terms of a warranty and make that information readily accessible to the consumer.

BoatU.S. has put together a few tips that will help boat owners in the event of warranty issues........

Suzuki Restructuring U.S. Operations........

Suzuki Motor of America Inc. has announced that they have set in motion plans for restructuring their U.S.-based operations by reorganizing their marine and motorcycle/ATV divisions into two separate entities.  The new organizations will move forward on April 1, 2021.

Suzuki's headquarters will be moving as well.  Suzuki Marine USA LLC will now be based along the Florida Gulf Coast in Tampa, down the coast from the company's new Marine Technical Center in Panama City.

Satoshi Uchida will serve as chairman of Suzuki Marine, and Masahiro Yamamoto has been named president of the new marine company.  Uchida and the Suzuki team believe that Suzuki Marine is positioning itself for sales growth and improved collaboration within the business segments.........

Westbound Span Of New Mississippi River I-74 Bridge Opened........

Earlier this month, the new bridge carrying Interstate 74 across the Mississippi River between Bettendorf, Iowa and Moline, Illinois opened four westbound lanes of traffic.

Work on the 1.2 billion project began in 2017 and the Illinois and Iowa Departments of Transportation officials are expecting the project will be wrapped up by the end of 2021.

The new bridge is part of a bigger expansion of I-74.  The new bridge is 72 feet wide, compared to 30 feet wide for the old bridge, which was completed in 1935.  The old bridge will remain in service for local traffic until the new eastbound span is completed........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Riverfront Is Now Open To The Public........

Following close to two years of work, Hannibal's reimagined riverfront is now open to the public.  Friday afternoon, officials with the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department announced that the renovation project is nearly complete.  Flooding had delayed the completion of the project.

HPRD supervisor Mary Lynne Richards said that she believes that the riverfront will be teeming with visitors now that the barriers are down.  She added that the riverfront renovation plan included many suggestions put forth by Hannibal residents, including boaters and people with mobility issues.

The project included a new marina and boat ramp, as well as the construction of mooring locations for two large riverboats, the Mark Twain Riverboat and Canton Marine Towing.  Additional items to be addressed next year will include the installation of the marina gas dock and the boat trailer parking lot........

Boat Manufacturer

Tige Announced Executive Expansion, Sales Increases........

Tige Boats, Inc. announced that they have expanded their executive team in response to a record-breaking year of sales, which saw a 48 percent increase in retail sales compared to 2019.

Tige says that the increase is mainly the result of the implementation of new strategies, employee growth, revolutionary technologies with the 2020/2021 product lines and the launch of the new ATX Surf Boat brand.

ATX Surf Boats and Tige Boats operate as independent brands, but are designed, engineered and constructed by the same team.  ATX reports that between the launch of the most anticipated boats in the inboard segment to the sales and registration of some 95 percent of the boats built so far, ATX has proven to be a success........

21 November 2010 in River History

The Grafton Ferry Boat Company announced they will close the ferry indefinitely. The last day of operation was Sunday, November 21, 2010.

Note:The Grafton Ferry has since been purchased by the city of Grafton, IL and is back in service during the warm months.

River History

Chicago Was A Product Of Lake Michigan, Nearby Rivers........

Lake Michigan, and the other Great Lakes were created by glaciers during the Ice Age.  As the ice receded, the melt water flowed south via the present Chicago and Des Plaines Rivers.

The French were the first white settlers in the area, and by 1700 they had built a mission and a trading post at the mouth of the Chicago River.  There was also a nearby settlement of French trappers and their Native American families.

Fast forward to 1837, when the City of Chicago was established.  Chicago was an excellent lake port, with a sheltered harbor in the Chicago River.  When 1848 arrived, the Illinois and Michigan canal linking the Chicago and Illinois Rivers was completed, transforming Chicago into the transportation center of the U.S........

Missouri Levee Districts

Levee Tax Assessments Rise Exponentially........

The taxes in the Howard Bend Levee District, which protects low laying areas of Maryland Heights from the Missouri River, and paying down the $23 million in levee district debt and hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual lawyer and engineering fees, keeps increasing.

Levee districts have popped up along the banks of waterways as a way for landowners to pool their resources and finance protection against the unpredictable Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.

A single law firm, Kansas City-based Husch Blackwell controls many of the levee districts in the St. Louis region.  Attorneys with Husch Blackwell control at least 10 levee districts in Missouri, and can bill government land within their boundaries, effectively billing taxpayers for levee improvements that only benefit a few landowners........
