Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois Piasa Park Cleaned Up For Trinity Marie Buel........
A group of volunteers recently cleaned up Piasa Park in honor of the late Trinity Marie Buel, a teenager that died in an accident in February 2018. The cleanup coincided with Trinity's 20th birthday, August 6th.
Trinity's Way President, Chris Unthank says that Piasa Park, just off the Greta River Road in Alton, was one of Trinity's favorite places. He said that the cleanup was a perfect way to honor her memory as well as celebrate her birthday.
Trinity's Way was founded in the spring of 2018, and supports other nonprofit organizations that protect and serve the best interests of animals and the environment, and hosts events that improve the community.
Trinity's Way will be hosting another cleanup along their adopted stretch of U.S. Route 67 in Godfrey in September or October........

Mississippi River History Old Man River Appears To Be 70 Million Years Old........
Geologists, including Sally Potter-McIntyre at Southern Illinois University, Michael Blum at the University of Kansas and Randel Cox at the University of Memphis have announced some new findings that reveal the monumental events that eventually created the Mississippi River.
Approximately 80 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous, a mountain range crossed the southern portion of the continent, effectively blocking southerly water flows. Most North American rivers flowed to the Western Interior Sea or north to Canada's Hudson Bay. A gap was eventually formed in the mountains, opening up the Mississippi Delta, the vast flood plain that stretches from southern Missouri to Louisiana.
As recently as 2014, researchers believed that the Mississippi began flowing through the gap, or Mississippi Embayment, about 20 million years ago. In 2018, McIntyre's team excavated zircon fragments from southern Illinois sandstone, and based upon the age of those fragments, estimate that the Mississippi began flowing much earlier, around 70 million years ago........

Boat Show News FLIBS Announces COVID Changes........
The organizers of the 61st annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show have released a Know Before You Go video which lines out some of the major changes that attendees may expect at this year's show.
The owners of the FLIBS, the largest in-water boat show in the world, state that some 80 percent of the show takes place in open-air outdoor locations. The FLIBS is scheduled to run from October 28th through November 1st.
The show's enhanced health and safety measures are being implemented as a result of Informa's newly-adopted AllSecure health and safety standards, in coordination with the CDC, local government and authorities........

Boat Manufacturer MasterCraft Purchased Florida Manufacturing Plant........
The MasterCraft Boat Company recently announced that they have entered into an agreement to purchase a boat manufacturing facility located In Merritt Island, Florida. THe company intends to set up a dedicated manufacturing facility for it's recently introduced Aviara brand.
Aviara is a designer, manufacturer and marketer of luxury day boats that range from 32 to 40 feet in length. The company had started production in MasterCraft's Vonore, Tennessee manufacturing facility back in July 2019.
The Merritt Island manufacturing facility spans 38 acres and offers warder access and over 140,000 square feet of dedicated manufacturing floor space........

Boat Propulsion News ePropulsion Introduces 3 HP Outboard........
ePropulsion has introduced the Spirit 1.0 Plus electric outboard motor, which offers lightweight, efficient and quiet propulsion that is vibration, emission and exhaust free.
ePropulsion claims that their new motor can easily match a 3 HP four stroke gasoline outboard and advertises it as being capable of propelling a 10 foot tender or provide auxiliary power for a day sailer up to 1.5 tons.
According to ePropulsion founder and CEO, Danny Tau, the Spirit 1.0's 1276 Wh battery allows the motor to reach up to 5 knots with a range of 6.4 nautical miles, and a 1 hour, 15 minute runtime at full speed. Runtime can be extended to around 20 hours and 46 nautical miles at slower speeds........

The Alton Marina is currently open for business but we are limited on our amenities. We are selling fuel and doing pump outs every Thursday to Sunday from the hours of 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. We will have take out service in our Deli/Ship's Store starting June 13th. The Deli hours are Friday 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M....Saturday 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M......Sunday 9:00 until 1:00 P.M. We hope as the next few weeks progress we will be adding more and more of the everyday services we usually offer!

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Responders Locate Missing Marina Employee........
The Alton Police Department reports that on Tuesday morning, the Alton Police and Fire Departments recovered a missing Alton Marina Employee from the Mississippi River.
The 12 year employee of the Alton Marina had been working nighttime security, and was last seen at around 9 pm Monday evening., The marina morning staff realized that the security guard was missing and alerted the authorities around 9 am.
The Alton Police and Fire Departments responded immediately and began searching for the employee. At approximately 9:35 am, the body of the employee was discovered in the river and the coroner was called out........

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois Survey Shows Support For Riverfront Development........
On Tuesday, the Quincy Riverfront Steering Committee learned that a recent online survey revealed that the majority of respondents believe that here are opportunities for adding amenities and making improvements along the city's riverfront.
During the meeting, the consultants hired by the city, Adams County and the Quincy Park Board presented an overview of the survey, which was answered by 740 people.
Maggie Strong, one of the consultants hired to assist with the drafting of a master plan, says that they are pleased with the quality and amount of responses received to the survey..........

Pallid Sturgeon News Prehistoric Fish Adjusting To Changing Conditions........
A recent study conducted by Marty Hamel, an assistant professor of fisheries and ecology with the University of Georgia has taken a look at how the pallid sturgeon has adapted to less-than-ideal conditions.
Reportedly, fish that live where their habitat has changed considerably have responded by growing faster, reaching sexual maturity at a younger age, resulting in a shorter lifespan.
The pallid sturgeon is typically a long-lived fish and these findings are a first for this type of species. The study goes on to discuss the fish's "plasticity", or it's ability to adjust rather than genetically adapt to major changes in it's environment........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri THe MLK Bridge Has Reopened To Traffic........
The Martin Luther King Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at St. Louis has been closed for approximately two years for a major repair project, and the Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that the work has been completed.
THe MLK Bridge was shut down to allow crews to repair the ramps and bridges leading up to the MLK Bridge, as that section of roadway had reached the end of it's life expectancy.
Crews replaced a 1,300 foot bridge, performed bridge deck surfacing and sealing and installed some lighting on the bridge. The project also included extensive repair work to the ramps and several other bridges........

The Alton Marina is currently open for business but we are limited on our amenities. We are selling fuel and doing pump outs every Thursday to Sunday from the hours of 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. We will have take out service in our Deli/Ship's Store starting June 13th. The Deli hours are Friday 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M....Saturday 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M......Sunday 9:00 until 1:00 P.M. We hope as the next few weeks progress we will be adding more and more of the everyday services we usually offer!

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois Survey Shows Support For Riverfront Development........
On Tuesday, the Quincy Riverfront Steering Committee learned that a recent online survey revealed that the majority of respondents believe that here are opportunities for adding amenities and making improvements along the city's riverfront.
During the meeting, the consultants hired by the city, Adams County and the Quincy Park Board presented an overview of the survey, which was answered by 740 people.
Maggie Strong, one of the consultants hired to assist with the drafting of a master plan, says that they are pleased with the quality and amount of responses received to the survey..........

Pallid Sturgeon News Prehistoric Fish Adjusting To Changing Conditions........
A recent study conducted by Marty Hamel, an assistant professor of fisheries and ecology with the University of Georgia has taken a look at how the pallid sturgeon has adapted to less-than-ideal conditions.
Reportedly, fish that live where their habitat has changed considerably have responded by growing faster, reaching sexual maturity at a younger age, resulting in a shorter lifespan.
The pallid sturgeon is typically a long-lived fish and these findings are a first for this type of species. The study goes on to discuss the fish's "plasticity", or it's ability to adjust rather than genetically adapt to major changes in it's environment........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri THe MLK Bridge Has Reopened To Traffic........
The Martin Luther King Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at St. Louis has been closed for approximately two years for a major repair project, and the Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that the work has been completed.
THe MLK Bridge was shut down to allow crews to repair the ramps and bridges leading up to the MLK Bridge, as that section of roadway had reached the end of it's life expectancy.
Crews replaced a 1,300 foot bridge, performed bridge deck surfacing and sealing and installed some lighting on the bridge. The project also included extensive repair work to the ramps and several other bridges........

Mississippi River At Louisiana, Missouri The New Champ Clark Bridge Wins National Award.........
The Champ Clark Bridge replacement project recently earned a national design award from the Design-Build Institute of America. THe new span crossing the Mississippi River at Louisiana, Missouri opened last year and replaced a deteriorating bridge that opened in 1928.
The Champ Clark Bridge was named a project of merit in the transportation category. The project is one of four to receive that distinction. THe bridge and other selected projects now advance to compete for the DBIA National Award of Excellence and Project of the Year awards.
The new five-span steel plate girder bridge doubles the previous bridge's width and included a variety of improvements on both sides of the river, including the reconstruction and raising of a critical levee on the Illinois side........

Maries River Near Westphalia, Missouri Semi Truck Split In Half After Bridge Collapses Into River.........
On Monday, a semi trailer split in half after a bridge spanning the Maries River in Osage County collapsed into the river. The truck driver was attempting to cross the one-lane bridge near Westphalia, Missouri when the incident occurred.
The truck was loaded with 40,000 pounds of feed and the bridge's weight limit was 10,000 pounds. The span, on County Road 611 collapsed as the truck began crossing it, leaving the back half of the trailer dangling over the edge.
No injuries were reported and officials are investigating the incident........

Mississippi River History A Look At The Mississippi River Basin Model.........
A concrete oddity located in Billy Butts Park in South West Jackson, Mississippi just happens to be the remnants of a 200 acre working model of the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio and Red River systems.
There isn't much left of the model now, but from 1949 to 1973, the Waterways Experiment Station was used to predict flooding and issues until computers became good enough to replace it with virtual water and cyber flooding.
Work started on the project in 1943. Since manpower was dedicated to the World War II effort, POWs from the nearby Clinton Prisoner of War Camp were used to construct the site.
The POWs were paid 90 cents per day for their efforts. During the 50th anniversary of the freeing of the POWs, a German prisoner that had returned for the reunion had a question: "What were we digging?"........

The Great Lakes Lake Michigan Project To Restore Reef........
A project to link and restore 1.5 miles of coastal fish habitat at the Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve in Lake Michigan will include the construction of a man-made reef.
Tree trunks and root wads will join slabs of natural limestone, glacial boulders and cobbles in being placed on the lake bottom. This habitat is intended to be a safe haven for the state threatened mudpuppy salamander, fish such as the yellow perch, small mouth bass, walleye and migratory birds.
Nicole Toth, project manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, says that the reef's design was created in cooperation with Corps biologists. The intent of the reef is to benefit rare and endangered ravine and coastal plants and animals........

Lake Of The Ozarks Three Injured In Boat Explosion........
Shortly after Noon on Sunday, three people were injured when a pleasure boat exploded after being refueled at a boat dock along the McCoy Branch of the Lake of the Ozarks.
Employee, 20 year old Megan Bartels, 52 year old Debra Kiely and 55 year old Dennis Kiely were injured in the explosion. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that after refueling Dennis Kiely was starting the second engine when the explosion occurred.
The Kielys were tossed into the water by the blast, while gas pump attendant Bartels was left on the dock. Police report that the vessel burned down to the water line while adrift on the lake........

Mississippi River Near Memphis, Tennessee Corps To Perform River Channel Improvement Work........
Last month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued two task orders for channel improvement work. The projects will include stone repairs to damaged dikes, hard points, revetments and other river training structures.
THe project will also include the placement of riprap upper bank paving for stone protection above the articulated concrete mattresses. The project will involve work at seven different locations within the Memphis district.
According to Project manager Mark Mazzone, the district had issued the task orders to make repairs to damages caused by the Mississippi River flooding during 2019. Funding from the 2019 supplemental damage appropriations will cover the tab........

The Alton Marina is currently open for business but we are limited on our amenities. We are selling fuel and doing pump outs every Thursday to Sunday from the hours of 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. We will have take out service in our Deli/Ship's Store starting June 13th. The Deli hours are Friday 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M....Saturday 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M......Sunday 9:00 until 1:00 P.M. We hope as the next few weeks progress we will be adding more and more of the everyday services we usually offer!

The tragic loss of four Missouri residents from Elsberry, on the Mississippi River, just across the Illinois state line brings to light the fact that boating tragedies are not limited to the warm weather months. Illinois Conservation Police investigating the incident on 10-5-08, suspect the victims succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning while staying on a house boat overnight on the river near Hamburg, IL. The victims all from Elsberry, MO. are identified as Dale Ryan 48, Jody Ryan 38, William Boehm 50, and Ruth Boehm 49 Reprinted from the Missouri State Water Patrol

Saturday was a dangerous day on the St. Louis area rivers, as there were two boating accidents, one occurring on the Mississippi River, the other on the Missouri River.
A boat capsized on the Mississippi River approximately 50 yards downstream from the Chain of Rocks Bridge. The Marine Rescue Task Force responded, but upon arrival, they found that the victims had already been assisted by another boater.
Responders were also called out to the Missouri River near Weldon Spring for reports of a kayak capsizing. Shortly after putting in, a kayaker encountered a strong current near the Daniel Boone Bridge, and was pulled into a bridge piling, causing the boat to capsize. The paddler lost his eyeglasses and paddle, but his companion was able to tow him to safety........

Added Sunday Boat Parade News Trump Supporters Attempt Record Boat Parade........
On Saturday, supporters of President Trump attempted to set the world record for the largest boat parade in Pinellas County, Florida. According to organizers, nearly 1,200 boaters were expected Saturday morning, which would have broken the Guinness World Record for the largest boat parade.
Guinness still cites the largest boat parade occurred in Malaysia on September 13, 2014, in which there were 1,180 boats. Organizers of last month's Trumptilla in South Carolina stated over 3,000 vessels participated in the parade.
Saturday's record attempt organized in the Gulf of Mexico just north of Pier 60 in Clearwater Beach. THe official boat count was held at the Welch Causeway Bridge in Madiera Beach. No official count has been released........

Mississippi River Near Thebes, Illinois Sunken Towboat Blocked The Mississippi River........
On Wednesday, August 12th, the Upper Mississippi River was closed in both directions after the MV Boone sank near Upper Mississippi River Mile Marker 43 near Thebes, Illinois.
The MV Boone was being towed upstream by the MV David A Lewis Jr. as a dead tow. The captain stated that he had heard noises outside of the pilothouse, and upon investigating, found that the lines connecting the vessels had snapped.
The Boone sank in the middle of the channel. The vessel was sitting upright in approximately 30 feet of water. There was an oil sheen visible, but with the speed of the current, no boom could be deployed to contain it........

Missouri River Management Missouri River Flows Remaining Stable........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that the releases from the Gavins Point Dam will remain at thirty thousand cubic feet per second into the fall. According to Tom Curran, the Manager at Gavins Point, the Missouri River basin has seen below normal precipitation.
Curran says that the Corps' Omaha office will soon be announcing the winter water release rate for the Missouri River. He adds that the releases continue to get the Upper Missouri River reservoirs to their winter water storage point.
Water storage at the beginning of August was slightly above sixty one million acre-feet. the forecasted runoff for the year will be approximately thirty on million acre-feet, or 120 percent of normal........

Mississippi River Journeys Spare Key Director Floating The Mississippi River For Nonprofits.........
The COVID-19 outbreak has hit businesses, schools and churches rather hard. Nonprofit organizations have taken a hit as well, but Erich Mische, the executive director of the Twin Cities group, Spare Key intends to do something about it.
Mische will be floating down the Mississippi River aboard a "raft", which is a wooden house built on a pontoon boat base. His main means of propulsion will be the river's current and a push pole to keep off the river banks. He will have a small motor to help navigate locks and to stay out of the way of river traffic.
Mische is calling his journey Hope on the River, which will benefit Spare Key. This organization assists families with any type of illness from any financial background with expenses, including food, rent, gas or mortgage.........

Missouri River At St. Charles, Missouri Deal Near For Riverpointe Development Near Bangert Island........
The City of St. Charles, Missouri is getting close to selling some if it's property along the Missouri River to private owners who are looking to develop the land along Bangert Island.
On Thursday, St. Charles Mayor Dan Borgmeyer said that he will be meeting with three prospective buyers next week, and that a contract may be finalized with a few weeks.
Borgmeyer added that the city wants to choose who is the developer for the project. The city also wants to set the bar for where they want the property to be at without taking away from an other nearby development........

Missouri River Near Corning, Missouri Corps Closed Another Breach In L-536 Levee System.........
On Saturday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District announced that they had closed another breach along the Missouri River Levee System L-536, located near Corning, Missouri.
The repair work was part of an $8.74 million contract awarded to AECOM Technical Services, Inc. The levee repair returns that section of the levee to a 25-year protection level, improving flood risk management and allowing for follow-up construction work.
There are two more breaches in the L-536 levee system, and repair work is currently underway. The remaining levee system will be restored by means of a new levee setback........

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois Riverfront Plans....
The updated master plan for Lincoln Park located along the Quincy Riverfront has been put on hold for the time being. On Wednesday, the Quincy Park Board rejected the plan, however, the commissioners say they will get back to it soon.
The QPB instead would like to see a master plan for Quincy's entire riverfront. A Riverfront Master Plan Steering Committee with representatives from the City of Quincy, Adams County and the Park DIstrict are developing plans for the city's riverfront.
The plans for the Quincy riverfornt include an amphitheater with a bandstand, a trail featuring interpretive signs commemorating the Lincoln-Douglas debates throughout Illinois, a small shelter, an exercise station and additional parking........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri A Look Back At The St. Louis Riverfront, Circa 1970........
In 1970, the St. Louis Riverfront looked quite a bit different than it does today. Back then, the Gateway Arch was fairly new and there were several vessels that were fixtures along the riverfront that no longer in existence.
One of the vessels featured in a photo taken in 1970 was the sternwheel dredge Sainte Genevieve which was a steam powered cutterhead dredge. There were tours of the dredge at various ports, and after she was decommissioned, the ill-fated Genny ended up sinking twice and was eventually scrapped.
Other notable vessels moored along the St. Louis Riverfront are the LT. Robert E. Lee, the Becky Thatcher, the wharfboat for the absent Huck Finn, the excursion boat Mississippi Belle, the Goldenrod and the Admiral. All six boats no longer exist........

In just a few short months, the collaborative marketing campaign, Get On Board, from Take Me Fishing and Discover Boating has reached an audience of over 640 million people.
The Get On Board campaign was launched on June 15th, and is a collaboration between the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, the Marine Retailers Association of the Americas and the National Marine Manufacturers Association in order to help more Americans to experience the wellness benefits and restorative health of boating and fishing.
Ellen Bradley, the senior vice president and chief brand officer for the NMMA says that even though new boats are selling at impressive levels this summer, the campaign's real value is the voice it is giving the recreational marine industry when they have the attention of their potential next-generation customer........

Illinois River Near Peoria, Illinois Food Distributor Intends To Offer Carp........
Roy Sorce, owner of Sorce Enterprises in East Peoria, recently teamed up with the Midwest Fishing Co-op in order to reduce the number of Asian carp in the Illinois River, as well as putting another protein source onto the dinner table.
Sorce says that they are talking about removing 15 to 20 million pounds of Asian carp from the Illinois River each year. This would greatly reduce the number of carp in the river, but would also reduce the risk of the carp reaching the Great Lakes.
Sorce has received approval to quickly freeze the harvested fish from the river for shipment to processing facilities. The still frozen minced fish are returned to Sorce's business for storage and eventual sale........

Mississippi River Journeys Musicians Touring The Mississippi River Aboard A Pontoon Boat........
A trio of musicians has been traveling along the Upper Mississippi River aboard a pontoon boat and performing a series of shows in river towns. Kyle Ollah joined Liz Draper and Clancy Ward for a limited schedule of show called the Mississippi PonTour.
The journey had kicked off back in late July, and over the course of their travels and performances, the trio managed to raise over $1,500 for the NAACP's legal defense fund.
The group has had their share of learning curves along their journey, such as learning where to beach the pontoon for the night, understanding the effects speed boats have on the small watercraft, and learning how to navigate locks........

Missouri River Journeys Trip Along The Missouri River Offers Unique Perspective.........
Journalist Katie Peterson with the Fort Leavenworth Lamp recently joined up with Lamp photographer Prudence Siebert, retired Lieutenant Colonel Gary Linhart and Neil Bass, DPW natural resources specialist for a few paddling trips along the Missouri River near Leavenworth, Kansas.
Bass says that the Missouri River is likely the most under-utilized recreational river in this part of the nation. The National Park Service's website states that paddling along the Missouri River is a great way to see what Lewis and Clark may have experienced during their 1804 and 1806 travels.
Peterson notes that the river trip provided an opportunity to see Fort Leavenworth from a completely new prospective. The trips also gave Peterson the chance to test her own skills and perseverance........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri One Lane Of The Stan Span Closing Through Friday........
Officials have announced that one eastbound lane of Interstate 70 across the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at St. Louis will be closed through Friday.
The lane will be closed from 6 am to 6 pm daily through Friday so that crews can make repairs to support cable sheathing that was damaged during a car fire........

07-16-20 Okay here we go the 3rd Chute shuttle is starting this weekend thank God we found some drivers and I'm going to get this thing launched out and going. So here how it works it is a free shuttle from Alton to Grafton or. Grafton to alton and no you do not have to stay at the 3rd Chute LOL you can go anywhere you want in town and pick up what hour you want to take it back and forth so it starts Saturday and Sunday at 1pm at the Alton location that is where it is based out of so every odd hour starting at 1 in Alton you can catch a bus every even hour you can catch it in Grafton we will be running it fairly late on Saturday nights and Sunday not as late... the bus runs off of tips so we appreciate any tips and donations you can give while riding the bus if this works out we may put on more stops and add more buses we are going to try this and see if we can't get it going.. so take the ride up the River Road. While having a cold beer and listen to some tunes and not worried about getting in trouble LOL if you know what I mean thanks any questions put them to the page or any other questions put it on the 3rd Chute II site and we will answer all of them and thanks for all of the support we hope to grow and keep making things better better and better any suggestions are welcome 3rd Chute Upcoming Events.. click here |

The Alton Marina is currently open for business but we are limited on our amenities. We are selling fuel and doing pump outs every Thursday to Sunday from the hours of 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. We will have take out service in our Deli/Ship's Store starting June 13th. The Deli hours are Friday 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M....Saturday 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M......Sunday 9:00 until 1:00 P.M. The tragic loss of four Missouri residents from Elsberry, on the Mississippi River, just across the Illinois state line brings to light the fact that boating tragedies are not limited to the warm weather months. Illinois Conservation Police investigating the incident on 10-5-08, suspect the victims succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning while staying on a house boat overnight on the river near Hamburg, IL. The victims all from Elsberry, MO. are identified as Dale Ryan 48, Jody Ryan 38, William Boehm 50, and Ruth Boehm 49

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Monday's Boat Fire Likely Caused By Faulty Bilge Pump........
Officials are reporting that a faulty bilge pump may have been the cause of a boat fire that destroyed a boat along the Mississippi at the Alton municipal boat ramp.
At around 5:30 pm Monday, responders with the Alton Fire Department turned out for the report of a Bayliner on fire at the public launch area of the Alton Marina.

Mississippi River In Minneapolis, Minnesota Restoring Mussel Population May Lure Other Wildlife Back To The River........
Biologists believe that the time is right to reintroduce endangered river mussels back into the Mississippi River above St. Anthony Falls in downtown Minneapolis, now that constant dredging for river traffic has ended.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board has already restored an island as habitat for the long-lived mussels. They are planning on restoring three more islands.
The Board will be working with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to recreate approximately a mile of natural river bottom that was virtually destroyed and sterilized by decades of dredging. Once this project is completed, the DNR will release young mussels into the river........

Mississippi River Delta Corps Has Reached Land Building Milestone........
While the Mississippi River is crucial to life in Louisiana, so is the sediment that hitches a ride towards the Gulf of Mexico, especially in the birdfoot delta near the mouth of the Mississippi River.
As part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' annual dredging program for maintaining the Mississippi River Ship Channel, the Corps and their partners have used dredged material to restore or rebuild over 10,000 acres of wetlands in the past 11 years.
The Head of Passes, located at Mile Zero on the Mississippi River, is where the river splits into three main outlets to the Gulf: the Southwest Pass, the South Pass and Pass a Loutre.
The Corps maintains the Southwest Pass as part of the Mississippi River Ship Channel, and to do so required an armada of dredges working almost non-stop for six to seven months out of the year........

Boat Manufacturer Boat Construction Efforts Increasing........
The National Marine Manufacturers Association's latest Monthly Shipping Report reveals that for the second consecutive month, wholesale boat shipments increased during June, up 60 percent from May. Compared to June, 2019, however, wholesale shipments are down 5 percent.
Vicky Yu, Director of NMMA Business Intelligence says that they are encouraged to see wholesale shipments had increased across all segments, and that manufacturers are slowly returning to capacity and striving to meet the increased demand for new boats.
The June Monthly Shipping Report revealed that the wholesale shipments of aluminum outboard boats had increased significantly and sooner that expected, returning to what they were on average during 2019. This category accounts for over 40 percent of new boat sales........

07-16-20 Okay here we go the 3rd Chute shuttle is starting this weekend thank God we found some drivers and I'm going to get this thing launched out and going. So here how it works it is a free shuttle from Alton to Grafton or. Grafton to alton and no you do not have to stay at the 3rd Chute LOL you can go anywhere you want in town and pick up what hour you want to take it back and forth so it starts Saturday and Sunday at 1pm at the Alton location that is where it is based out of so every odd hour starting at 1 in Alton you can catch a bus every even hour you can catch it in Grafton we will be running it fairly late on Saturday nights and Sunday not as late... the bus runs off of tips so we appreciate any tips and donations you can give while riding the bus if this works out we may put on more stops and add more buses we are going to try this and see if we can't get it going.. so take the ride up the River Road. While having a cold beer and listen to some tunes and not worried about getting in trouble LOL if you know what I mean thanks any questions put them to the page or any other questions put it on the 3rd Chute II site and we will answer all of them and thanks for all of the support we hope to grow and keep making things better better and better any suggestions are welcome 3rd Chute Upcoming Events.. click here |

The Alton Marina is currently open for business but we are limited on our amenities. We are selling fuel and doing pump outs every Thursday to Sunday from the hours of 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. We will have take out service in our Deli/Ship's Store starting June 13th. The Deli hours are Friday 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M....Saturday 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M......Sunday 9:00 until 1:00 P.M. We hope as the next few weeks progress we will be adding more and more of the everyday services we usually offer!

The tragic loss of four Missouri residents from Elsberry, on the Mississippi River, just across the Illinois state line brings to light the fact that boating tragedies are not limited to the warm weather months. Illinois Conservation Police investigating the incident on 10-5-08, suspect the victims succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning while staying on a house boat overnight on the river near Hamburg, IL. The victims all from Elsberry, MO. are identified as Dale Ryan 48, Jody Ryan 38, William Boehm 50, and Ruth Boehm 49

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Monday's Boat Fire Likely Caused By Faulty Bilge Pump........
Officials are reporting that a faulty bilge pump may have been the cause of a boat fire that destroyed a boat along the Mississippi at the Alton municipal boat ramp.
At around 5:30 pm Monday, responders with the Alton Fire Department turned out for the report of a Bayliner on fire at the public launch area of the Alton Marina.

As part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' annual dredging program for maintaining the Mississippi River Ship Channel, the Corps and their partners have used dredged material to restore or rebuild over 10,000 acres of wetlands in the past 11 years.
The Head of Passes, located at Mile Zero on the Mississippi River, is where the river splits into three main outlets to the Gulf: the Southwest Pass, the South Pass and Pass a Loutre.
The Corps maintains the Southwest Pass as part of the Mississippi River Ship Channel, and to do so required an armada of dredges working almost non-stop for six to seven months out of the year........

Boat Manufacturer Boat Construction Efforts Increasing........
The National Marine Manufacturers Association's latest Monthly Shipping Report reveals that for the second consecutive month, wholesale boat shipments increased during June, up 60 percent from May. Compared to June, 2019, however, wholesale shipments are down 5 percent.
Vicky Yu, Director of NMMA Business Intelligence says that they are encouraged to see wholesale shipments had increased across all segments, and that manufacturers are slowly returning to capacity and striving to meet the increased demand for new boats.
The June Monthly Shipping Report revealed that the wholesale shipments of aluminum outboard boats had increased significantly and sooner that expected, returning to what they were on average during 2019. This category accounts for over 40 percent of new boat sales........

07-16-20 Okay here we go the 3rd Chute shuttle is starting this weekend thank God we found some drivers and I'm going to get this thing launched out and going. So here how it works it is a free shuttle from Alton to Grafton or. Grafton to alton and no you do not have to stay at the 3rd Chute LOL you can go anywhere you want in town and pick up what hour you want to take it back and forth so it starts Saturday and Sunday at 1pm at the Alton location that is where it is based out of so every odd hour starting at 1 in Alton you can catch a bus every even hour you can catch it in Grafton we will be running it fairly late on Saturday nights and Sunday not as late... the bus runs off of tips so we appreciate any tips and donations you can give while riding the bus if this works out we may put on more stops and add more buses we are going to try this and see if we can't get it going.. so take the ride up the River Road. While having a cold beer and listen to some tunes and not worried about getting in trouble LOL if you know what I mean thanks any questions put them to the page or any other questions put it on the 3rd Chute II site and we will answer all of them and thanks for all of the support we hope to grow and keep making things better better and better any suggestions are welcome 3rd Chute Upcoming Events.. click here |

The Alton Marina is currently open for business but we are limited on our amenities. We are selling fuel and doing pump outs every Thursday to Sunday from the hours of 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. We will have take out service in our Deli/Ship's Store starting June 13th. The Deli hours are Friday 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M....Saturday 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M......Sunday 9:00 until 1:00 P.M. We hope as the next few weeks progress we will be adding more and more of the everyday services we usually offer!

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois One Injured During Boat Fire.........
Monday evening, a man was injured in a boat fire in Alton, Illinois. At around 5:30 pm, responders from the Alton Fire Department were called out to the public boat launch area of the Alton Marina.
When responders arrived, they found a Bayliner boat ablaze and burning out of control in the water. They also found one man, reportedly connected to the boat injured and lying on the ground. The man was transported to a local hospital.
The Alton Firefighters let the fire burn itself out, as the fire was fully involved and did not appear to be endangering anything else. Apparently, there was dozens of people lined up along the levee watching and recording video of the fire and smoke........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Clark Bridge Lane Closures Scheduled For Next Weekend........
The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that the Clark Bridge, which carries U.S. 67 over the Mississippi River into Alton is scheduled to have intermittent lane closures in each direction, beginning at 7 pm Friday evening, weather permitting.
The lane closures will continue throughout the weekend. All of the Clark Bridge lanes will be reopened to traffic by 4 am Monday, August 17th. The closures will allow crews to seal the deck surface.........

Boat Sales Heavy Demand For Boats During July........
During July, marine dealers report that they continued to see unprecedented demand, with 84 percent of those survey responders stating that they had experienced retail growth for the month.
July marked the second highest reading in the history of the Pulse Report, which is administered by the Marine Retailers Association of the Americas, Soundings Trade Only and Baird Equity Research. June was the highest reading of retail growth in the survey's history.
Thanks to the strong demand, 89 percent of dealers reported new boat inventory was too low. Depleted inventory is limiting retail sales as manufacturers ramp up production........

Mississippi River Near Vicksburg, Mississippi Remains Of Deckhand Missing Since 2018 Discovered Along The River........
THe remains of a missing man found in the Mississippi River have been identified. Back in November 2018 Deckhand Timothy Howell Hearn of Vicksburg went missing from a towboat near St. Joseph, Louisiana.
On Monday, the Adams County Coroner's Office announced that they had positively identified the remains as belonging to Hearn. Adams County Coroner James Lee stated that partial skeletal remains were discovered along the Mississippi River in early July in an area called Anna's Bottom.
The remains were sent to a forensics laboratory in St. Louis, Missouri for identification. The DNA from the remains was compared to DNA provided by the Hearn family. The cause of Hearn's death could not be determined........

Mississippi River At Donaldson, Louisiana NTSB Released Report On 2018 Allision At The Sunshine Bridge........
At around 1:40 am on October 12, 2018, the MV Kristin Alexis was motoring upstream along the lower Mississippi River, pushing the crane barge Mr. Ervin when the crane barge struck the Sunshine Bridge at Mile Marker 167.5, near Donaldsonville, Louisiana.
The allision occurred as the vessel and tow attempted to pass through the west bank span of the bridge, causing an estimated $8,500 in damages to the crane.
Last month, the National Transportation Safety Board released their Marine Accident Brief, which estimated damages to the bridge to be around $6.7 million. The allision apparently damaged several weight bearing members on the bridge, causing it to be closed for repairs until March of 2019........

The Alton Marina is currently open for business but we are limited on our amenities. We are selling fuel and doing pump outs every Thursday to Sunday from the hours of 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. We will have take out service in our Deli/Ship's Store starting June 13th. The Deli hours are Friday 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M....Saturday 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M......Sunday 9:00 until 1:00 P.M. We hope as the next few weeks progress we will be adding more and more of the everyday services we usually offer!
