Blue-Green Algal Bloom Detected At Starved Rock State Park........

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency reports that a blue-green algal bloom has been detected at the Starved Rock Lock and Dam near Utica, Illinois, prompting warnings to avoid that section of the river.

A sampling of the bloom reveals an algal toxin called microcystin has risen to 138 parts per billion, considerably higher than the federal health advisory threshold of eight parts per billion.

Kim Biggs, spokeswoman for the IEPA says that the algae blooms can expand, they do not move downriver.  She adds that multiple factors can cause a bloom, including warmer river temperatures and lack of rain........

Tug Fest Cancelled

Tug-Of-War Across the Mississippi River ........

Iowa Tug Fest Update
6/29/2020

It is with a sad and heavy heart that we write to inform you that we have chosen to cancel Tug Fest 2020 in LeClaire, IA.
On Sunday, June 28th our Board met to discuss the most recent proclamation from our Governor and changes in insurance policies with regards to Covid-19. We felt the amount of modifications that would need to be made to our festival would render it unrecognizable as our beloved Tug Fest and would not be anywhere near what our fans have come to expect from us. This was not an easy decision for us and we held out as long as we could but in the end we felt that it was our responsibility and duty to do our part in keeping our fans, volunteers, tuggers and community as safe as we possibly can. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your undying support of Tug Fest and your patience while we made this most difficult decision. Rest assured that we will be back in action planning Tug Fest 2021 very soon so that we can give you the biggest and best event so far.

Sincerely,
Kari Long
President, Tug Fest Iowa

**Any fundraiser gift certificates for Tug Fest 2020 will be valid for Tug Fest 2021 so please keep them safe if you have them**

Tug Fest Iowa
June 24 at 6:43 PM ·

Sadly our friends from Illinois Tug Fest have been forced to cancel their festivities for 2020 due to restrictions set forth by their Governor. Iowa Tug Fest is still planning to hold our event on a modified level. Obviously this means that the tug of war across the Mississippi River will not be happening HOWEVER, we are hard at work planning a tug of war on land. We wholeheartedly hope that our Illinois tuggers will consider joining us for a day of fun on the rope. Next year, we will go back to our normal River Tug.
Stay tuned for more details!!!

Arkansas River Near Tulsa, Oklahoma

Angler Snagged 146 Pound World Record Paddlefish........

On Sunday, James Lukehart and his wife Caitlin were snagging paddlefish on the Arkansas River near Tulsa with guide Jeremiah Mefford of Reel Good Rime Guide Service, when he snagged a record-breaker.

The monster paddlefish James Lukehart snagged weighed in at 146 pounds, 11 ounces, besting the current Oklahoma record by several pounds.  The fish is likely a world record breaker as well.

THe paddlefish was snagged at Keystone Lake, which is a portion of the Arkansas River west of Tulsa.  They were fishing in rough conditions, with winds blowing 20 - 25 MPH and powerful rolling waves........

Boating Safety

FCC Order May Affect Reliability Of GPS Units.........

Boat Owners of the United States (BoatUS) reports that a decision by the Federal Communications Commission that gives mobile satellite services operator Ligado Networks permission to construct and operate a land-based 5G wireless network will affect the reliability of the nation's Global Positioning System, and harm boating safety.

Ligado's section of licensed L-Band spectrum designated for space-based navigation and communications is located close to lower frequency bands used by hundreds of millions of GPS units used for public safety, health, government, transportation, military, commerce, agriculture and much more.

BoatUS, a founding member of the recently launched Keep GPS Working Coalition, believes that as Ligado's network is rolled out, instances of signal interference will increase, giving current GPS unit users the only option of purchasing new GPS units or face potential interference........

Hi Captain Bill,

River fun is River fun especially if the river is a charming Ozark stream.  Sunday I enjoyed the Huzzah River with our son in law August, daughter Lindsay, grand children Nancy and Gus!  The float was fantastic and the kids can’t wait to go again.  Neither can I!

Mississippi River Cruising

The Mississippi River May Be The Best Bet For First U.S. Cruises........

American Cruise Lines were supposed to be the first to resume cruise operations along the nation's inland waterways with a week-long trip through the Pacific Northwest aboard the American Song on July 20th.  Then Oregon revised it's Phased Reopening Plan to exclude overnight river cruises.

Things are looking better along the Mississippi River, as American Cruise Lines intends to sail the Mississippi River starting on July 12thwhich would make the vessel the first to depart a U.S. Port since the worldwide cruising suspension went into effect in Mid-March.

The American Queen Steamboat Company has also shifted their focus from the Pacific Northwest to the Mississippi River.  They also had plans to resume cruising in the Pacific Northwest, and had those plans cancelled, but they are set to resume cruising the Mississippi River in July........

Boat Propulsion

Green Is The Future Of Marine Power........

Over the next decade, boats will likely look, sound and perhaps even smell differently than they do today, and Steve Trkla, president of Torquudo North America says boat builders know it and are beginning to prepare for the future.

The emissions free marine propulsion system of tomorrow will likely electric motors and hydrogen fuel cells.  These green propulsion systems will probably be completely off of the grid, running on solar, wind and regenerated power.

The technology required to make this leap currently exists and is in use in a variety of applications worldwide, including trains, buses and cargo ships.  As this technology becomes more mainstream, the transition into the recreational market will become easier........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Boat Caught Fire Near Coconuts........

Authorities report that on Friday evening, a boat caught fire on the Gravois Arm of the Lake of the Ozarks.  The boat's driver and passengers were able to escape to safety.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that Richard Sullivan was operating the 1987 Chris Craft near the 6 Mile Marker and Coconuts Bar & Grill.  Sullivan had been towing tubers when he noticed smoke and flames coming from the engine compartment.

All occupants of the boat were able to get off the vessel safely, and were assisted out of the water by a passing boater.  The Chris Craft quickly turned into a floating fireball and drifted to the shore........

The Picture of the Day.....

Ahoy Bill,

Hope you're doing well, crazy times we live in!

Well, the Skipperliner, christened Mae Belle, that's dry docked on Polestar's Point was built by my wife and I in 1993 and berthed at Duck Club for the first 3 years of its journey. We brought her down the Mississippi during the flood of "93" during nearly impossible conditions where fuel and marinas were all but unavailable. Pete Tully, and his wife Pat, joined us for the last leg from Louisiana Mo to Duck Club.

We eventually moved her to Sioux Harbor where we owned 2 slips Ron Buchanan built in 1996. She saw service as far away as Dog River Marina on Mobile Bay with many nights hanging on the hook in Pool 26. We traded Mae Belle to Port Arrowhead for a new 1998 Sea Ray 370. Unfortunately she suffered extensive damage at Harbor Point during an ice storm that collapsed the dock. True to form she lived up to her sturdy reputation keeping the roof from damaging boats around her.

Eventually she was sold to the second owner and berthed at Harbor Point for many more years. Finally a third couple bought her and was brought back to Polestar for the remainder of her time afloat. Apparently she had suffered more damage over the dock collapse incident and developed rust and corrosion from water penetration. The cost to repair the hull was just too much and she ended on long life afloat.

Pete Tully acquired her from the last owners and has decided to permanently dry dock her on Polestar Point. He plans to turn her into an AirBnB where people can enjoy her rich history with commanding views of Dardenne Slough. A far cry from the miles under her keel but on full view of those who still travel Pool 26.

So, the next time a boater cruises by "Mae Belle" hoist one in a toast to a once proud vessel.

Capt. Arlie Appler (Ret.)

PS:

My wife reminded of Mae Belle's great stories afloat.

We were cruising upstream at Chester Illinois when I sensed something from the fly bridge. I looked over my shoulder and a F-15 out of McDonnell Douglas/Boeing flight test was flying nap of the earth up the river. The test pilot gave us the aviators salute, at eye level, lit the afterburners and disappeared in a hurry! Our own personal air show.

On another voyage we had been traveling in really bad weather the entire day when reaching the Cape Girardeau bend. A south bound tow hailed us and said it's about to get worse. We had planned a one horn passing when a micro burst appeared with a complete loss of visibility. My radar was on but the rain attenuation was too great and we lost visual with one another. I turned toward the shore to exit the channel and not tangle with a 20 barge tow. We both came out the other side and congratulated ourselves from dodging and bad encounter. We layer up for the night in the Cape Diversion Channel and drank many grogs.

We could go on and on but those are some of her rich history.

Where Did Our Pelicans Go ?

Mississippi River Near Clinton, Iowa

Pelicans Have Returned To Pool 13........

The American white pelicans have returned to their summer paradise along the Mississippi River near Clinton, Iowa once again.  White pelicans have been in the region since the early 1990s, when small groups lazily summered on the sand bars.

In 2007, the first nesting colony took up residence on two islands in the lower Pool 13 region of the Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.  This is the only known pelican nesting colony on the Upper Mississippi River.

The pelicans are now a common sight along the Mississippi River and many of it's tributaries.  Squadrons of pelicans often leave the nesting colony to fly the skies over Clinton, gliding along the air currents at great heights, and travel miles inland........

First 2020 Tows Locked Through Olmstead Locks And Dam........

River traffic recently locked through the twin 1,200 foot-by-110 foot chambers at the Olmstead Locks and Dam for the first time this year, and only the fourth time in the project's history.

Ryan Lawrence, assistant operations manager for the Louisville Engineer District's Locks and Dam project office says that the weather conditions over the past few years have been unique, but raising the wicket dam in June is much more normal.

Crews at the Olmstead Locks and Dam started raising the wicket dam on June 18th.  It had also been raised in August 2018, August 2019 and in November 2019 for a total of around 100 days........

Amphitheater Area Remains Cordoned Off For Flood Repairs........

The area around Alton's Liberty Bank Amphitheater Park remains cordoned off with signage that reads "closed due to flooding", as there is still work to be done to a fountain and some other pump work changes that will be completed before the park reopens.

Alton Mayor Brant Walker says that he is hoping that the park will be reopened by fall of 2020, however, that will be dependant upon the COVID-19 outbreak and if the required work is completed.

Walker says that there is still damage in the park area caused by the 2019 floods that needs to be repaired.  He believes that Alton is close to receiving FEMA reimbursement on the fountain work, which would help out considerably with the project........

Last month, legislation that would create an official port district in Jefferson City, Missouri passed the state legislature, and is currently awaiting signing by Governor Mike Parsons.

The legislation was sponsored by Missouri State Representative Rudy Velt, who represents Jefferson City and a surrounding area of Cole County. Velt notes the importance of container-on-vessel in his idea for the future of the port project.

Velt says that the port is a part of the larger future plans for having a larger type of vessel moving up and down the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, carrying more than 1,500 containers at a time........

U.S. Warships

USS St. Louis Heads To Florida For Commissioning........

On Saturday, the newest ship in the U.S. Naval fleet set sail from Marinette, Wisconsin and headed for Florida, where the vessel will be officially commissioned and added to the Navy's operating fleet on August 8th.

During the ship's one month voyage, known as a "sailaway" the LCS-19 is flying the flags of the St. Louis Blues and the St. Louis Cardinals among others.  The sailaway marks the end of the vessel's construction period.  She will be officially named the USS St. Louis when she is commissioned.

This is the seventh ship to bear St. Louis' name, beginning with a sloop of war launched in 1828.  After that, the name was carried by a Civil War gunboat, a Spanish-American War troop ship, a World War I cruiser, a World War II light cruiser and most recently, a cargo ship decommissioned in 1991........

Corps Begins Revetment Season........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District started their riverbank revetment season on June 11, 2020.  The Corps' Mat Sinking Unit installs articulated concrete mattresses along the banks of the Mississippi River in order to stabilize the bank and maintain the proper navigation channel alignment.

According to Memphis District Commander Colonel Zachary Miller, protecting the banks of the Mississippi River helps keep the channel in place, which maintains the necessary depth and alignment that allows thousands of tows to travel the river each year.

Miller says that without the revetments, the Mississippi River would shift, resulting in new shallow cutoffs that would be hazardous to travel through.  He adds that the revetment program helps keep the river in it's place, preventing it from directly striking the levees........

River History....

June 25, 1906 In River History

U.S. Congress passes bill authorizing construction of a bridge spanning the Mississippi River at St. Louis. The bridge was initially called the "St. Louis Municipal Bridge" and known popularly as the "Free Bridge" due to the original lack of tolls.
In 1942, the bridge was renamed for WWII General Douglas MacArthur.

Boating Mishaps On Indiana's Cedar Lake

Family Sinks Two Trucks Trying To Save Sinking Boat........

A family recently attempted to save their sinking boat on Cedar Lake in Indiana by using two trucks.  Their efforts were not successful.  Reportedly, a Jeep Wrangler and a Ford Raptor were swamped in the attempt to save the sinking $300,000 Pavati AL 26 wakeboat.

Chris Bruce, a writer for motor1.com wrote that while those vehicles are rugged, they should not be driven into a lake.  Caleb Jacobs of The Drive called the move a "headscratcher", noting that the water was pretty shallow for a boat, but for a couple of truck, no matter their four-wheeling pedegree, it was too deep.........

The Lock and Dam 10 lockmaster house, in Guttenberg, Iowa, is currently being repaired to ensure it continues to serve as a symbol of the 1930s and the construction of the 9-foot navigation channel. The lockmaster house was built between 1937 and 1938 and is the last remaining lockmaster residence in its original location on the Mississippi River.

Corps Starting Repairs To Lockmaster House.........

Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District have started on the repair work at the Lock and Dam No.10 lockmaster house at Upper Mississippi River Lock and Dam No.10 in Guttenberg, Iowa.

The Corps awarded the contract for the project to Aegean Construction Supply Corporation of Shalimar, Florida to complete the rehabilitation work.  Crews began work back in May and hope to wrap up the project by fall's end.

The Corps developed a historic preservation management plan for the house last year, and they are now implementing the recommendations that will improve visitor safety, including the removal of lead paint, restoring the roof, wood siding and chimney, as well as reconditioning the shutters and windows........

Conservation Police To Boaters:  Stay Sober Behind The Wheel........

Summer is here and Illinoisans are preparing to hit the water for Independence Day, so, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police officers are reminding boaters to remain sober when they will be behind the wheel.

Lieutenant Curt Lewis, boating law administrator for the ISP says that boaters should remember that just like a car or truck, boats are large, heavy machinery that become dangerous to operate when under the influence.

Lewis adds that all too often, boating accidents and fatalities occur because the vessel operators are impaired while operating the watercraft.  He acknowledges that people want to enjoy the water with friends and family, but they should do so responsibly........

Dredging This Summer Near New Transient Dock........

Later this summer, the City of Paducah, Kentucky expects to start dredging near it's transient boat dock after the arrival of a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

According to Pam Spenser, the Paducah City Spokeswoman, the flooding over the past three years has greatly increased the amount of sedimentation just downstream of the transient boat dock.

The cost estimate to permit, engineer and remove a portion of the sediment is expected to be about $5.5 million, with the City to pay 12 percent and the state picking up 12 percent of the costs.........

Louisiana Joins Lawsuits Filed Over The Bonnet Carre' Spillway.........

Jeff Landry, the Attorney General for Louisiana, recently joined a pair of lawsuits which challenge the method in which the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates the Bonnet Carre' Spillway, which is the southernmost flood control structure along the Lower Mississippi River.

The lawsuits are challenging the way that the Corps operates the spillway, which diverts freshwater from the Mississippi River into Lake Pontchartrain and into the Mississippi Sound in the Gulf of Mexico.

The suit alleges that the discharge of freshwater into the brackish lake and the salty sound caused a decimation of the region's commercial fishing industry as well as the closure of beaches due to algae blooms........

News Release From BoatUS

SPRINGFIELD, Va., June 23, 2020 – Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) has helped hundreds of thousands of boat owners make good boat-buying decisions. But things sometimes don’t go so well, such as when a buyer fails to do his or her research, doesn’t understand the role of a boat dealer or what it offers, or perhaps trusts the seller just a little too much. Here’s a short list of things to know before shopping for a boat.

What to know about the boat you are buying:

If you’re shopping for a new outboard-powered boat, the engine may not be the same model year as the boat. Most engine manufacturers have stopped designating model years for outboard engines and have replaced the model-year designator on the engine’s serial number with a code that signifies an “era” in which all engines are supposed to be the same, with similar upgrades and technology.
• The hull identification number (HIN) on the transom doesn’t lie. Check the HIN on any boat you consider buying (new or used) to make sure that the age of the boat is correct. The last two digits indicate the boat’s model year.
• The marine survey on the boat you are looking at isn’t a diamond and doesn’t last forever. Even a survey that’s a couple months old may not be up to date enough, and never rely on a seller’s old survey he got when he bought the boat. Hire a surveyor familiar with the type of boat you’re interested in and affiliated with either the National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) or the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS). It’s not wise to hire a surveyor recommended by the seller or broker.
• The “lightly used” theory debunked: If a preowned boat has been sitting for two or three years, it almost always will need more work than you think. Boats and engines last longer when they’re regularly used, and problems compound when they’re idle for long stretches.

What you should know about a boat dealer or broker:

News Release From BoatUS

A New Boating Safety Concern This July 4BoatUS Foundation: Don’t try to have your own fireworks show

ANNAPOLIS, Md., June 22, 2020 – Celebrating America’s birthday, thousands of boaters are expected to hit the water this Fourth of July holiday weekend, recreational boating’s traditional busiest time of the year. With COVID-19 it certainly won’t be the same. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has a few boating safety reminders just in time for the holiday.
While boaters will need to follow social distancing guidelines, that’s not the only COVID-19 concern, according to the Foundation. While many local community fireworks displays have been canceled this year, some boaters may wish to offer their own fireworks show and take to the water with pyrotechnics. “With gallons of fuel aboard and other flammable materials – your boat – you would be truly risking lives,” said BoatUS Foundation Assistant Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner. “It’s not worth the risk. There is no safe place aboard a boat suitable for using fireworks.”
As the captain, you can’t head out without remembering that your passengers become your responsibility as soon as you pull away from the dock. Think twice about loading up the boat with a cooler full with beer, wine and other alcoholic drinks as alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents.
“Just because the captain is sober doesn’t mean alcohol should be free-flowing aboard your boat,” said Sensenbrenner. “The stressors of a hot sun, wind and waves all day when combined with alcohol can intensify the effects of inebriation, increasing the risk of a passenger slip or fall overboard or worse. Save the alcohol for celebrating after you have safely returned home for the night.”
Lastly, remember that you won’t be out on the water alone. Operation Dry Water will heighten BUI awareness and enforcement during the three-day weekend of July 3−5, and law enforcement officers will be on alert for those violating boating under the influence laws. Agencies from all 50 states and are expected to participate for increased enforcement.

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois

City Seeking Grant For Barge Dock Improvements........

City officials in Quincy are saying that a proposed $1.3 million project that would make improvements to the city's barge dock would likely cause a ripple effect of positive economic growth.

The project would raise the city's barge docks form 19.5 feet to 23 feet, allowing them to remain open to river traffic during times of flooding, until the river rises to heights in excess of 22.5 feet.  Quincy records show that the Mississippi River has risen to 23 feet five times over the past decade.

The improvement project would also raise West Harrison and South First Streets near the dock, raising approximately 540 feet of the dock wall to 23 feet, reconstructing the dock's loading pad and raising existing utilities to the new height........

Missouri State Highway Patrol

News Release........

June 22, 2020
EMPHASIS: Patrol: Summer Water Safety Tips

Colonel Eric T. Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, is encouraging everyone to incorporate safety into any plans to enjoy Missouri’s waterways. Troopers patrol the state’s waterways to enforce Missouri’s boating laws and assist where needed. Everyone enjoying these areas is asked to do their part!

Swimming Safety

Wear a life jacket, take a friend with you, know your swimming ability, and stay sober around water. Pay close attention to children around water. Missouri’s lakes and rivers can include currents, drop-offs, and floating debris that make swimming more challenging. Exhaustion is a very real possibility if you’ve been swimming for a long period of time. Don’t make the mistake of overestimating your swimming ability. All swimmers are encouraged to use a life jacket, especially young children and inexperienced swimmers. Younger, inexperienced swimmers may become exhausted before they realize they are in trouble.

Avoid putting yourself at risk when trying to assist someone who is struggling in the water. Assist them by tossing a floatation device or extending an object to them. Keep yourself safe! If you do have to enter the water to assist them, always put on a life jacket first.

Floating Safety

Check the weather and the river level before you go floating. A lot of rain affects the speed of the current and the amount of debris in the water. Know the river conditions before you go. Be aware of changing conditions downstream which may endanger yourself or your group. Consider each person's level of experience, and base your float plan on the person with the least experience. Pair inexperienced floaters with those who have more experience, and make sure everyone in your group knows your rescue plan.
Bring a life jacket for each person, dry clothing, and a first aid kit. Store extra items in watertight containers. Everyone should use a life jacket, especially those vulnerable to drowning, such as children and adults drinking alcohol.
It takes a lot of energy to navigate a canoe, kayak, or inner tube on a float trip. Packing snacks and beverages to help you refuel is a good idea. Make sure you follow the law for these types of watercraft: Glass beverage containers are not allowed. Ensure coolers are sealed. Collect your trash and take it with you after the float. Leave no trace, so Missouri’s waterways remain beautiful for others.

If you capsize in swift water conditions, hold onto your craft and move immediately to the upstream side to avoid being trapped between the boat and an obstacle. Float on your back, feet together and pointed downstream, and release your craft only if it improves your safety.

Boating Safety

Pay attention to other boats and watercraft, so you can make boating maneuvers early and deliberately when encountering other vessels. Understand that distractions and alcohol consumption slow reaction time. Please designate a sober captain. Drinking alcohol irresponsibly on the water puts you at greater risk of being involved in a boating crash or becoming a drowning victim. Alcohol affects your judgement, reaction time, vision, coordination, and comprehension. It affects you more on the water than on land due to boating stressors. The movement of the boat, vibration and noise from the boat’s motor, sun, and wind are all boating stressors and enhance the effect of alcohol on your body. If alcohol is part of your water activities, drink responsibly: Never operate a vessel if you’ve consumed alcohol.

Many injuries suffered on our lakes during the boating season occur when boats travel across large wakes and the operator or passengers are injured from the impact. Each boater should do their best to reduce the size of their wake and know how to navigate across large wakes. Reducing your speed, approaching the waves at a 45- to 90-degree angle, and keeping the bow of your boat elevated is the safest way to navigate a large wake. Be alert to rough water conditions to protect yourself and your passengers.

Inspect the engine compartment each time you fuel up. Use your engine’s blower system to properly ventilate the compartment for several minutes after fueling up and prior to starting the boat. Gas fumes can result in a fire or explosion if not vented properly.

At night, remember to check your vessel’s navigation lights before heading out, and be sure to have spare bulbs on board. Avoid overloading your boat with too many passengers. This can cause the boat to become swamped and affect the handling of the boat. Observe Missouri’s nighttime speed limit of 30 miles per hour on the water. Slow down and take your time. Nighttime crashes tend to involve more serious injuries and damage.

If you need assistance or witness criminal activity on Missouri’s waterways contact the nearest Highway Patrol troop headquarters by calling the Patrol Emergency Report Line at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.
Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

Mississippi River Near Dorena, Missouri

Dorena-Hickman Ferry Expected To Remain Closed Tuesday........

Officials with the Dorena-Hickman Ferry have announced that the temporary closure of the ferry for mechanical repairs will run through at least Tuesday, June 23rd.

The ferry had temporarily shut down operations on June 15th due to an issue with one of the ferry's engines.  The need for additional repairs and the delivery time needed for parts has caused the extended closiure.

When the Dorena-Hickman Ferry is closed, it creates a 75 mile detour and adds an additional 90 minutes or travel time for ferry users.  The ferry links Missouri Routes A and 77 near Dorena, Missouri with KY 1354 near Hickman, Kentucky........

Out of the eight grants, five are earmarked for inland waterways projects.  The funding will allow for the enhancement of navigable waterways and will expand existing waterbourne freight services in several states including Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee.

LST-325 News

A New Home At Evansville, Indiana........

Over the past 15 years, the LST-325 has called Inland Marina home, but after the Tropicana Casino Riverboat shifted to a land-based operation, the vessel will be relocated to the casino's former mooring spot.

The LST-325's new dock has been updated with a passive mooring system that raises and lowers with the changing river levels, even with no crew aboard.  THe dock is adjacent to it's new $3.6 million visitors center and gift shop.

81 year old Captain Bob Jornlin took a six hour trip to see the World War II amphibious ship that he once captained arrive at it's new home. Jornlin says that he has a lot of love for the LST-325 and wanted to see it arrive along the Evansville riverfront.........

The Mississippi River at Baton Rouge has fallen below flood stage for the first time in 156 days.  As of 9 am Sunday morning, the Mississippi River was at 34.8 feet.  Flood stage at Baton Rouge is 35.0 feet.  The river is expected to keep falling to 23.98 feet by Saturday, July 18th.

The Montana struck the railroad bridge at St. Charles while trying to pass under it and took on water before running aground on the St. Louis County side of the river. No one was hurt, but the Montana split in half.
