Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois
Business Owners Eager To Reopen In
Grafton........
Tourism is a major economic driver for
Grafton, Illinois and the COVID-19 outbreak and recent flooding
have been devastating for the restaurants and other businesses
there. Some 60 percent of Grafton's revenue comes from tourism.
The Loading Dock Bar and Grill has been
fortunate as the majority of their seating is outside. The
establishment still had to reduce the number of seats from 800
to 600 to maintain social distancing.
Peter Allen, co-owner of The Loading Dock
says that they are glad to be reopening as funds were starting
to run a bit short and the bills keep coming, whether you're
open for business or not........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois
State Rep.
Urges Preparation For Flooding........
In order to get local residents ready for
heavy rainfall and flooding, Illinois State Representative
Monica Bristow (D-Alton) is recommending everyone make
preparations for severe weather.
Bristow says that the area has been adapting
to flooding for years, but it is always important to go over
ways to best prepare and remain safe. He adds that with the
current COVID-19 situation, it is also been easy to be
distracted from preparing for the spring weather as they
normally would.
Bristow
suggest that residents living within the flood-prone regions to
develop an emergency supply kit and have it ready to go. The
kit should include a battery powered radio with extra batteries,
flashlights, bottled drinking water, a three day supply of
non-perishable food and a first aid kit.
Bristow is
also suggesting that residents of flood-prone areas keep
important documents in a safe deposit box or other secure
location to ensure that they are safe from flooding........

River Cruising News
Two River Cruise Lines Release 2020
Cruising Schedules........
Recently, two American river cruise passenger
lines released their cruise schedules for the summer of 2020.
American Cruise Lines will be first to resume operations, with
the American Song departing on June 20 along the Columbia
and Snake River systems. ACL's new vessel, American Harmony is
slated to depart from Memphis, Tennessee on June 28th.
The American Queen Steamboat Company had
originally intended to resume river cruising around the end of
June, however, American Queen CEO and President John Waggoner
announced on May 27th that they would be extending their cruise
resumption dates into July.
The company states that the revised timeline
was in response to the evolving nature of the COVID-19 outbreak
and following continued governmental restrictions at many ports,
cities and public institutions. AQSC has also partnered with
Ochsner Health to help with new health protocols to protect
their passengers........

District 8 MRS
UPDATED

MISSISSIPPI RIVER
UPPER
MISSISSIPPI RIVER - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY - UPDATE
The following areas are in the high water action phase IAW the
Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Pool 28 (Mile 185.0 – Mile 160.1) and
Pool 29 (Mile 160.0 – Mile 109.9).
Towboat operators should exercise caution, minimize wake where
possible and be experienced in high water operations.
Down-streaming operations are not recommended unless the vessel
is equal to or greater than 75 feet in length and the vessel has
a minimum of 1,800 h.p. Be
aware of a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have occurred
and take appropriate action to prevent breakaways from
occurring. Exercise caution in all passing and meeting
situations and be mindful of all charted bridge navigational
clearances. Navigation buoys may have been
dragged off station, so remain cautious while transiting. In St.
Louis Harbor (Mile 184.0 – Mile 179.0), south-bound tows greater
than 600 feet in length, excluding the towboat, limit their
transit to
daylight hours. All towing vessels should have a minimum of 250
h.p., for every 2,000 tons of cargo.

Hey Bill,
We’ve got high water on the front entrance, but it looks like
it’ll hold off at Mikes LaRosa for our weekend party.
We’ve moved one of the front courtesy docks to allow access to
the bar. We also have additional parking at the gas dock. Bikes
and cars can use our back entrance on Le Clair Street.
Looking forward to having Rogers and Nienhaus and the Skylark
Brothers back again!

Some Highlights of This
Week's
LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS
District 8 MRS
UPDATED
May 27, 2020
Mississippi
River System
ILLINOIS RIVER
ILLINOIS
WATERWAY CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY - UPDATE
The following areas are in the
high water watch phase IAW the Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Zone 2 Hardin (Mile 49.9 – Mile 10.0) and
Zone 1 Grafton (Mile 9.9 – Mile 0.0).
The following areas are in the high water action phase IAW the
Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Zone 7 Peoria (Mile 187.0 – Mile 145.6), mariners are requested
to minimize their wake between approximate Miles 179.0 and
162.0,
Zone 6 Copperas Creek (Mile 145.5 – Mile 129.0),
Zone 5 Havana (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0), mariners are requested
to minimize their wake between approximate Miles 128.5 and
127.5,
Zone 4 Beardstown (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3) and,
Zone 3 Meredosia (Mile 80.2 – Mile 50.0).
High water and drift potential may be encountered in this area.
Mariners are advised to
minimize wake and exercise caution. Laying up on
saturated levees is prohibited. Mariners should be experienced
in high water conditions and avoid down-streaming operations if
possible. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in
debris and maneuver appropriately. Be aware that a buildup of
debris in fleeting areas may have
occurred and take appropriate actions to prevent breakaways.
Exercise caution in all meeting and overtaking situations, as
swift currents may be present. Navigational buoys may have been
dragged off station, so remain cautious while transiting.
Recreational traffic is
strongly discouraged due to debris and swift currents.
Mariners should avoid pushing in along the RDB, in the vicinity
of Mile 167.0, due to railroad tracks in close proximity to the
bank line..

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois
The Grafton Ferry Will Reopen
Friday........
Starting on Friday, the Grafton Ferry will
once again be making trips between St. Charles County in
Missouri and Grafton, Illinois. For those who travel to and
from Grafton into Missouri, the ferry's reopening is welcome
news.
Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin says that the
local business owners are especially glad to see the ferry
resume service, as it gives a sizable boost to the local tourism
industry.
The Grafton Ferry cuts the trip from Grafton
the the St. Louis and St. Charles region by approximately a half
hour. Last weekend, the town of Grafton saw the greatest
turnouts of visitors since the stay-at-home mandate was issued
in March........

Tennessee River Journeys
Friends Taking A Pontoon Boat Trip Down
The River........
Three long-time friends from Paducah,
Kentucky are looking to promote Tennessee River tourism by
taking a pontoon boat trip down the entire 652 navigable miles
of the river beginning over Memorial Day Weekend.
The men were to leave from Knoxville,
Tennessee at 8 am on May 23rd, with the intention of spending
the next week or so on the river, stopping here and there at
marinas, hotels and restaurants to promote the Tennessee River
and the available amenities.
Captain Bob Cherry Jr. had suggested the trip
aboard his 21 foot pontoon boat, named My Cheri for his
wife, as a way to promote Explore TRV and the Tennessee
RiverLine Project........

Calhoun Ferry Company’s priority is
the health and safety of our crew and passengers.
We received a call today from the U.S. Coast Guard advising us
that all passengers will be required to stay in their vehicles
when crossing the ferry. This is in response to the restrictions
placed on gatherings of 10 or more people. This will remain in
effect until the restrictions are lifted.
We are cleaning and disinfecting all crew areas and all ferry
passes as we receive them.
Starting tomorrow 03/21/2020 we will be reducing our hours to
eliminate the late night shift on Friday and Saturday. This will
remain in effect until the restrictions are lifted. Hours will
be Monday through Saturday 5am to 9pm and Sunday 8am to 9pm.
We will all get through this together by working together for a
better tomorrow. Stay safe!

St. Charles Boat & Motor update:
Due to the unprecedented time that
the country is experiencing, we are implementing some additions
to our normal routine:
At this time, we remain open for business, operating with a
small staff. For the safety of our customers, our staff, and our
families, in addition to our normal operations, we are offering
some alternative means of interacting with us as well – for both
purchasing products (from parts to a new boat) and for your
service needs.
If you’d like to shop any new or used inventory with us with
minimized social interaction, we can schedule individual
appointments or send you a virtual video tour of a unit. You can
always shop our inventory on our website as well, at
www.stcharlesboat.com. We currently have some huge discounts
on our in stock inventory! If you’re interested in a private
appointment, please e-mail us at zeke@stcharlesboat.com or you
can call us at 636-947-0106 during normal business hours.
For your service needs, we can schedule a touchless drop off and
pick-up with you. For touchless drop off or pick-up, e-mail
Jerry at jerry@stcharlesboat.com or Zeke at zeke@stcharlesboat.com
for scheduling and instructions.
We realize that this too will pass and we can return to a more
normal routine, which means getting back to boating for many of
us!
We will keep our customer’s updated by posting on our
website and
Facebook page.

2015 RiverBills Sticker Sighting....
was
sent to us by Capt'n Barry Munsell of
Sail St. Louis
Hi Bill,
My good friends captain Jerry Groeblinghoff and captain Michael
Costello stopped by to cheer me up what with the coming flood.
So we took the opportunity to enjoy a cold one together before I
start moving to higher ground. My house is across from the Post
Office which will also get wet. I was here in 93 and if this
forecast is correct, it will take the number 2 spot as far as
records .

Some Highlights of This
Week's
LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS
District 8 MRS
UPDATED
May 27, 2020
Mississippi
River System

Good Memorial Day Turnout In
Grafton........
Despite the warnings against large
gatherings, many people headed to Grafton, Illinois over the
Memorial Day Weekend. At least four restaurants were open and
offering carryout and outdoor seating service.
Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin says that the
tourist traffic was not comparable to a normal year. He adds
that the businesses apparently followed the guidelines set by
the federal government.
The State of Illinois is expecting to move to
Phase III of their reopening plans by the end of the
week.........

Illinois River Flooding
Illinois Governor Toured
Flooding........
On Wednesday, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker
spent some time touring the flood preparations being made along
the Illinois River in Meredosia, Illinois, which is
approximately 60 miles west of Springfield.
Approximately 60 Illinois National Guard
soldiers have been deployed to Meredosia to assist local
emergency management officials with placing close to 150,000
sandbags, which will shore up the town's levee. The levee
protects the town of around 980 residents.
As of Wednesday, Morgan and Pike counties in
Illinois were under flood warnings, as the Illinois River rose
to a height of 25.3 feet, which is over eight feet above flood
stage........

Norris Lake Near Knoxville, Tennessee
Man Thrown From Boat, Boat Continued In
"Circle Of Death"........
This week, a Tennessee man saw his day on the
lake go from bad to worse when he was thrown from his boat while
not wearing a life jacket and then his boat sped away with no
one at the controls.
The boat did not go too far, however. It
settled into a pattern referred to as the "circle of death",
where the vessel is going round and round in circles, as the
boater is left treading water.
The boater reports that he was thrown from
his boat after hitting rough water at 33 MPH. He was able to
swim away from the boat and was rescued by some nearby anglers.
After an hour and a half of the boat circling, wildlife officers
managed to snag the boat's propeller with a rope, stalling the
engine........

Illinois State Parks
Remaining State Parks Set To Reopen
Friday........
Earlier this month, many Illinois state parks
reopened, but several remained closed. On Friday, those
remaining state parks will be reopened, but with some
restrictions.
Normal park hours will be observed at all of
the parks, however, the shelters, playgrounds and visitors
centers will be remaining closed until further notice. If there
are concession operations on site, they will be reopened.
Campgrounds and camping will be reopened,
however, Tim Schweizer with the Illinois Department of Natural
Resources is calling on campers to keep health and safety
practices in mind........

Historic Warships
The Sunken USS Nevada Has Been Found
Off Of Hawaii........
Researchers recently discovered the final
resting place of the sunken USS Nevada off the coast of
Hawaii. The discovery brinks closure to the story of the
historic battleship that saw duty during both world wars and
survived two nuclear explosion tests.
James Delgado, a maritime archaeologist
announced the find, reporting that the USS Nevada was
located approximately 75 miles southwest of Pearl Harbor on
Oahu.
Delgado said that the Nevada is an
iconic ship that speaks to American stubbornness and resilience,
as the vessel was raised after being sunk during the attack on
Pearl Harbor, repaired and returned to duty, where it survived
torpedoes, bombs, shells and two atomic blasts........

Calhoun Ferry Company’s priority is
the health and safety of our crew and passengers.
We received a call today from the U.S. Coast Guard advising us
that all passengers will be required to stay in their vehicles
when crossing the ferry. This is in response to the restrictions

effect until the restrictions are lifted.
Stay safe!

Know everyone is curious when our bath rooms will open. Not for awhile I am sorry to report. We cannot open until we can make sure you guys are all safe. We do not have the necessary supplies to keep it completely sanitized on a daily basis. Also the Missouri DNR just sent us a new email regarding EPA new guidelines on our water systems. SO will order another blue box, sorry for the inconvenience, but not going to be forever we hope.
Think positive.

Some Highlights of This
Week's
LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS
District 8 MRS
UPDATED
May 27, 2020
Mississippi
River System
Mariners should avoid pushing in along the RDB, in the vicinity
of Mile 167.0, due to railroad tracks in close proximity to the
bank line..

Mo. Gov: Not Our Job To Break Up LOTO
Parties........
Following a holiday weekend with crowds
ignoring the social distancing recommendation at the Lake of the
Ozarks, Missouri Governor Mike Parson says that there is not
much he can do to regulate gatherings.
Even though Governor Parson called the people
standing around shoulder-to-shoulder at lakeside pool bars
potentially dangerous ways to spread the coronavirus, he notes
that local health departments are responsible for ensuring
people remain six feet apart.
Parson adds that he will not be sending the
National Guard or the Missouri State Highway Patrol to monitor
social distancing. Instead, he will leave enforcement to city
and county level officials........

flooding.
The Kaskaskia River is a crucial
transportation link for many commodities, included coil steel

05-18-20 Had a
question about the pump out. At least that is working. Remember
what you are working with and be careful. Pat and Julio got it
going today. Maybe the weather will improve for the week end.
See you at the end of the road. 05-16-20

Jerry at jerry@stcharlesboat.com or Zeke at zeke@stcharlesboat.com
for scheduling and instructions.
We realize that this too will pass and we can return to a more
normal routine, which means getting back to boating for many of
us!

Kaskaskia River Near New Athens,
Illinois
Emergency Responders Had No Boat To
Help Boat in Distress........
Shortly after 1 pm Sunday afternoon, the
Monroe County Sheriff's Department and other agencies assisted
Illinois Conservation Police as they attempted to locate and
retrieve an occupied boat that broke down on the Kaskaskia River
near New Athens, Illinois.
A woman had made contact with emergency
dispatchers to report that her boat had broken down on the
river. Emergency responders worked to find access to a boat to
navigate the river for the search effort.
The New Athens Fire Department reported that
the broken-down vessel was towed back to shore by another boat

Lake Of The Ozarks
STL, State Officials Issue Warnings
Following LOTO Parties........
Missouri State and St. Louis area officials
issued dire warnings as videos of partiers at the Lake of the
Ozarks pool bars over the Memorial Day Weekend went viral.
On Monday, Missouri's health director, Dr.
Randall Williams chastised those who ignored precautions
intended to minimize the spread of the potentially deadly
coronavirus.
Williams said in a statement that COVID-19 is
still around and social distancing should continue to prevent
the further spread of infections. He added that decisions to
ignore the orders may have long-lasting and tragic
effects........

Lake Of The Ozarks
Page Calls For Self Quarantine For LOTO
Partiers........
If you were at the Lake of the Ozarks over
the weekend and ignored social distancing protocols, then St.
Louis County Executive Sam Page wants you to self-quarantine for
14 days or until a COVID-19 test comes back negative.
Page has asked the St. Louis County
Department of Health to issue a travel advisory as "some workers
return to work after ignoring social distancing protocols
recommended to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Page says that this reckless behavior
endangers countless people and risks setting back the progress
made in slowing the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak........

Lake Of The Ozarks
Camden County Sheriff Says Nothing
Illegal About LOTO Parties........
While photos and videos of people partying
and ignoring social distancing guidelines at the Lake of the
Ozarks over the Memorial Day Weekend went viral, the Camden
County Sheriff says that the partiers broke no rules.
Camden County Sheriff Tony Helms released a
statement on Monday saying that his department was busy keeping
order in the county and enforcing laws which does not include
enforcing social distancing and other measures intended to limit
the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Sheriff Helms says that social distancing is
not a crime and therefore the Sheriff's Office has no authority
to enforce actions in that regard. He adds that they expect
visitors and residents alike to exhibit personal responsibility
when at the Lake........

The Golden Eagle Ferry is OPEN
03/20/2020
Stay safe!

05-18-20 Had a
question about the pump out. At least that is working. Remember
what you are working with and be careful. Pat and Julio got it
going today. Maybe the weather will improve for the week end.
See you at the end of the road. 05-16-20

Grafton Feeling The Economic Pain
During Memorial Day Weekend........
The Memorial Day Weekend is typically the
kick off to summer in tourist towns such as Grafton, Illinois ,
however, lockdowns prompted by the COVID-19 outbreak have taken
their toll on local businesses.
According to Ben Allen, co-owner of The
Loading Dock, the past several months have "been bad". The
popular restaurant and bar remain empty, with a sign outside the
locked gate reading "Opening May 29".
On Sunday, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker
made the announcement that all four regions of the state may be
able to move into Phase III of the reopening plan over the next
several days. Phase III allows bars, restaurants, retail
outlets and salons may reopen to the public........

Fishy Tales From Kentucky Lake
An Alligator Was Discovered In Kentucky
Lake........
Saturday morning, a couple and their daughter
were out on Kentucky Lake when they discovered an alligator in
the Kentucky Dam Marina area near the paddle Boat area.
According to Kentucky Fish and Wildlife
officials, it appears that the alligator was struck in the head
by a boat propeller and left the water,.as it was dead by the
time that officers arrived in scene.
This is the third alligator found in the
region in the past five years. Kentucky Department of Fish and
Wildlife officials say that alligators cannot survive in waters
colder than 40 degrees, so they will die if released in the
region........

Lake Of The Ozarks
LOTO Packed Despite COVID-19
Outbreak........
Reportedly, the coronavirus pandemic has not
stopped people from heading to the Lake of the Ozarks for the
Memorial Day Weekend, despite orders to maintain social
distancing.
Crowds packed into some restaurants and bars
around the Lake, which draws in visitors from the surrounding
states including Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa and Kansas. A video
making the rounds on social media shows people lounging closely
together at a pool without masks.
On Sunday, Captain Chris Twitchell of the
Camden County Sheriff's Department said that the typically busy
resort region is even more crowded this year, noting that second
homeowners moved in to quarantine there months ago, and Memorial
Day vacationers too worried to travel by air have flocked to the
Lake instead........

May 25, 2012 in River History
Friday evening of Memorial Day Weekend. A man was injured seriously in a
boat fire at the North Shore Harbor located along the Mississippi River in
St. Charles County. Apparently, the man was servicing a fuel pump aboard a
boat when it exploded. A dock and another vessel caught fire as well. The
man was burned over 60% of his body, and was airlifted to Mercy Hospital. |

Boater Safety
Situational Awareness Crucial To Safe
Boating........
The captain of a boat of any type and size
must understand that having situational awareness is probably
the most important factor in safely navigating the waters. A
captain has to not only be aware of what conditions are on the
surface of the water for 360 degrees around the vessel, but also
what is above and below the water surface as well.
Captains need to keep their heads on a swivel
and constantly scan all around the boat to keep an eye out for
other vessels overtaking from the stern, vessels crossing from
port to starboard, as well as traffic dead ahead no matter what
heading they are on.
Captains also need to consider that their
vessel is not operating on a flat surface, that there are
hazards lurking beneath the vessel's keel. Captains should
learn to read the water and look out for signs of submerged
obstacles.
Keeping an eye on the skies is almost a
no-brainer, as the weather on the water can change almost in an
instant. Knowing the weather forecast could mean the difference
in a pleasant day on the water, and a miserable and dangerous
run back to the dock in the rain........

Mississippi River Education
Memphis, Tennessee
The River School Reopening Next
Month........
Bill Kline, the president and CEO of The
River School in Memphis, Tennessee says that they are planning
on fully reopening in June. The reopening will happen with all
of the appropriate safety measures protecting against COVID-19
in place.
Kline says that they had offered one
tankerman course remotely during the COVID-19 lockdown at the
request of a river company in the Vicksburg region, but the
virtual courses never really worked, as Rivermen and women tend
to be more hands-on people.
One major consideration for the school will
be when the U.S. Coast Guard will be reopening their Regional
Exam Centers, as the River School trains their students to pass
the Coast Guard exams, which are given at the Regional Exam
Centers........

Mississippi River At New Orleans,

Cities Work On Green Flood Control
Methods........
For over a century, the city of New Orleans
has been dependant upon canals and pump to remove stormwater
because approximately half of the city's land is below sea
level.
The busy port along the Mississippi River
that expanded by filling in wetlands is currently spending $270
million creating spaces for rainwater. The plan is similar to a
water garden set to go on a 25 acre site donated by nuns that
lived there prior to Hurricane Katrina.
New Orleans city is planning on installing
underground water holding tanks, porous pavement and other
methods of reducing storm flooding as well as reducing the
city's reliance on pumps built during the 1910s........

possible. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in
debris and maneuver appropriately. Be aware that a buildup of
debris in fleeting areas may have occurred and take appropriate
actions to prevent breakaways. Exercise caution in all meeting
and overtaking situations, as swift currents may be present.
Navigational buoys may have been dragged off station, so remain
cautious while transiting.
Recreational traffic is
discouraged.

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois
Grafton Still Fighting For 2019 FEMA,
IEMA Funds........
The city of Grafton, Illinois is among the
municipalities devastated by the historic flooding of 2019 who
are also waiting reimbursement from the Federal Emergency
Management Agency and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency
for flood-related expenses.
Grafton Building and Zoning Administrator Jay
Wrubel says that he has no confidence in FEMA or IEMA after
dealing with them for the past nine months. He adds that all of
his efforts could be for naught rather easily, in that they
could contest FEMA or IEMA's decisions and not get anything from
them.
Grafton is currently operating at a $267,518
loss, and is hoping to receive between $300,000 and $350,000 for
flood related expenses from 2019. The issue is that paperwork
redundancies and changes in agency representatives has thrown
promise of funds into uncertainty........

Illinois Flooding News
The Illinois National Guard Has Been
Activated For Flood Fight........
Sixty soldiers with the Illinois National
National Guard have been activated to help out with flooding
response efforts in four counties along the Illinois River,
including Pike, Grundy, Scott and Morgan Counties.
The Illinois Emergency Management Agency has
consulted with the National Weather Service and local officials,
and as a result, will be initiating sandbagging efforts to help
communities along the Illinois River with flood fight
operations.
The National Weather Service is calling for
major flooding along the Illinois River over the next several
days, as well as some minor flooding along nine other smaller
rivers within the state........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri
The Mark Twain Riverboat Has Resumed
Cruises........
On Tuesday, the Mark Twain riverboat at
Hannibal, Missouri resumed cruising operations along the Mississippi
River. The Sandy and Captain Steve Terry had delayed their usual
mid-March reopening schedule due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
New rules include requesting that passengers
observe social distancing, as well as asking passengers to wear
masks, although they are not required. Steve Terry says that they
have changed their boarding procedures and have reduced the number
of passengers per cruise to combat the COVID-19 outbreak.
Terry says that daily one-hour cruises are
scheduled at 1:30 pm, with boarding to begin at 1:00 pm. The first
dinner cruise of the season will be held Saturday, May 23rd from
6:30 to 8:30 pm, with boarding beginning at 6:00 pm........

Riverbend Tourism
Tourism Bureau Working Towards
Reopening........
Tourism in the Riverbend region is a major
economic driver, and it has been at a virtual standstill since the
middle of March when the COVID-19 pandemic fight prompted shutdowns.
The tourism industry pumps millions of dollars in
spending into local economies, and officials are hoping that the end
of the shutdown is in sight. Phase Three of the Reopen Illinois
plan is offering more flexibility in reopening businesses with
restrictions.
Stephanie Tate, the Great Rivers and Routes
Tourism Bureau spokeswoman says that as the region reopens, there
will still be people that want to avoid crowds, and many local
attractions are working on plans that will get the tourism industry
moving again.........

Lake Of The Ozarks
Lake Race 2020 Has Been
Cancelled........
Officials have announced that Lake Race 2020
has been cancelled. The event was scheduled for May 29 - 30,
but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lake Race organizers are now focusing on
planning for Lake Race 2021, which is scheduled for June 4 - 6,
2021.
Tom Abbett, the Lake Race President says that
because of the busy tourism season on the Lake, and with two
other large annual boating events planned, it was not possible
to close a large enough section of the Lake of the Ozarks
waterway for the Lake Race to be held as well........

Mississippi River Near Lansing, Iowa
Teens Injured After Head-On PWC
Collision........
On Wednesday, two teenagers were injured
after two personal watercrafts collided on the Mississippi River
near Lansing, Iowa. Lansing first responders were dispatched to
the river north of Lansing at around 4:50 pm.
Reportedly, 17 year old Tyler Wild and 17
year old Clayton Little were operating the PWCs when they
collided head-on. At the time of the collision, Little's PWC
went over the top of Wild's, striking him in the head. Wild was
knocked unconscious and was face down in the water until Little
was able to help Wild into a nearby boat.
Wild was taken to shore, where he received
medical attention prior to being taken to a hospital in La
Crosse, Wisconsin. Little was treated on scene and was
released. Both teens were wearing lifejackets.......

Calhoun
Ferry Company
The Golden Eagle Ferry is OPEN
03/20/2020
Stay safe!
Thank You,
The Calhoun Ferry Company

Know everyone is curious when our bath rooms will open. Not for awhile I am sorry to report. We cannot open until we can make sure you guys are all safe. We do not have the necessary supplies to keep it completely sanitized on a daily basis. Also the Missouri DNR just sent us a new email regarding EPA new guidelines on our water systems. SO will order another blue box, sorry for the inconvenience, but not going to be forever we hope.
Think positive.

St. Charles Boat & Motor update:
Due to the unprecedented time that
the country is experiencing, we are implementing some additions
to our normal routine:
At this time, we remain open for business, operating with a
small staff. For the safety of our customers, our staff, and our

some alternative means of interacting with us as well – for both
purchasing products (from parts to a new boat) and for your
service needs.
If you’d like to shop any new or used inventory with us with
minimized social interaction, we can schedule individual
appointments or send you a virtual video tour of a unit. You can
always shop our inventory on our website as well, at
www.stcharlesboat.com. We currently have some huge discounts

appointment, please e-mail us at zeke@stcharlesboat.com or you
can call us at 636-947-0106 during normal business hours.

pick-up with you. For touchless drop off or pick-up, e-mail
Jerry at jerry@stcharlesboat.com or Zeke at zeke@stcharlesboat.com
for scheduling and instructions.
We realize that this too will pass and we can return to a more
normal routine, which means getting back to boating for many of
us!
We will keep our customer’s updated by posting on our
website and
Facebook page.

Important Notice Regarding Port Charles Harbor During This
Difficult Time.
We hope all of our friends are
doing well. Please note that we have one person in our
office working and taking phone calls at this time. Our
front door is locked, but our ramp is open. Please leave
your ramping payment in the box located at the ramp. Our gas
dock is also open during normal business hours.
If you are in need of a part or
something from our ships store just give us a call and we
can get it for you and arrange how you can pick it up.
Because of the size of our shops we feel confident
that we are staying at least 6 feet apart from one another
so please be assured we are continuing to work on all of our
scheduled service work. At this time we are still taking
orders for service work and would be happy to arrange drop
off times for your boat.
We hope to see everyone soon! Please stay safe and continue
to think about all the wonderful sunny boating days ahead!
From all of us at
Port Charles Harbor
TowBoatUS St Charles is located at Port Charles Harbor.
Because we are a emergency response team we are open for
calls during this time. If you do go out on your boat please
remember all of the necessary safety equipment you would
normally take while boating. Stay safe and enjoy the
sunshine!

Illinois Flooding
National Guard Activated To Help With
Flood Fight........
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker recently
activated 60 Illinois National Guard soldiers and ordered
additional measures by the state to prep for projected flooding
along the Illinois River and other waterways.
The National Weather Service is forecasting
that the Illinois River will rise to major flood stage Saturday
morning at Meredosia and will keep rising through the middle of
next week. Pritzker says that without additional flood control
measures, several levees could be overtopped threatening
residents and flooding roads.
The Illinois Emergency Management Agency has
started sandbagging efforts to assist communities along the
Illinois River. Pritzker has issued a state disaster
declaration for Grundy, Pike Scott and Morgan Counties........

Big Turnout Expected For Memorial Day
Weekend........
In the new era of the coronavirus pandemic,
outdoor recreation in general and boating in particular, have
become important outlets. Boat sales are strong, traffic at the
dealerships is returning, lines at public boat ramps are long,
and TowBoatUS expects that the Memorial Day Weekend will be one
for the record books.
BoatUS vice president John Condon says that
there are some locations that recreational boating has yet to
return, but those areas will be the exceprtion this Memorial Day
Weekend.
Condon adds that boating is an approved
activity and boaters are social distancing, so officials believe
that boaters will be hitting the water in a big way attempting
to get back to what's familiar and enjoyable with the
family........

Tittabawassee River Near Edenville,
Michigan
River Dams Break Prompting Mass
Evacuations........
Earlier in the week, rapidly rising water
levels along the Tittabawassee River in central Michigan caused
the failure of two dams, prompting the evacuation of some 10,000
residents.
Tuesday evening, the National Weather Service
recommended that those living near the river seek higher ground
after catastrophic dam failures occurred at the Edenville Dam,
approximately 140 miles upstream of Detroit, and the Sandford
Dam, which is about seven miles downstream..
According to Selina Tisdale, spokeswoman for
Midland County, Michigan, the evacuations include the towns of
Edenville, Sanford and portions of Selina. Emergency responders
had even gone door-to-door early Tuesday morning to get the word
out........

Calhoun
Ferry Company
The Golden Eagle Ferry is OPEN
03/20/2020
Stay safe!
Thank You,
The Calhoun Ferry Company

We do not have the necessary supplies to keep it completely sanitized on a daily basis. Also the Missouri DNR just sent us a new email regarding EPA new guidelines on our water systems. SO will order another blue box, sorry for the inconvenience, but not going to be forever we hope.

Missouri Flooding News
Storms Caused Minor Flooding In Eastern
Missouri........
Lingering wet weather has caused a rise in
the rivers in the eastern Missouri region, resulting in minor
flooding along portions of the Mississippi, and other rivers.
Over the past week, the eastern part of the state had around 3
inches of rainfall.
Currently, the Mississippi River is at flood
stage in the northeastern towns of Louisiana and Clarksville,
resulting in a few road closures and wet farm fields.
On Wednesday, the Mississippi River at Cape
Girardeau was close to two feet above technical flood stage.
Much of the town is protected by a floodwall.
The Meramec River is flooding at Arnold as
well........

EMPHASIS: Troop C Prepares For Memorial Day Weekend
Captain Stephen B. Ferrier, commanding officer of Troop C,
announces that Troop C will be participating in enforcement
operations throughout the Memorial Day weekend holiday counting
period of 6 p. m., Friday, May 22, through 11:59 p.m., Monday
May 25, 2020. The goals of the operations are to promote safety
and reduce traffic crashes. Throughout the holiday weekend,
troopers within Troop C will be participating in Operation
C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness & Reduction Effort). Troopers will be
watching for all traffic violations and will be especially
vigilant regarding distracted driving, impaired driving,
aggressive driving, excessive speed, and seat belt violations.
Troopers also will be available to help motorists in need of
assistance.
In addition to Operation C.A.R.E., Troop C will conduct
enforcement operations on May 22 and May 25. These operations
will include speed saturations, DWI or criminal patrol
operations, and hazardous moving operations.
The Memorial Day weekend
is also an unofficial start to the boating season. Boating is a
great pastime and troopers want everyone to enjoy themselves in
a safe manner. Troop C marine enforcement troopers will be
enforcing all boating laws and will be especially vigilant
regarding careless watercraft operations throughout the holiday
weekend. Never operate a boat while you are impaired, and never
ride with an impaired operator. Please be courteous to others on
the water, wear a life jacket, and obey the law regarding safe
operation of a vessel and no wake zones. Troopers will also be
available to help boaters in need of assistance.
Too many people die in traffic crashes each year in Missouri.
The choices you make when you’re behind the wheel matter. Make
good choices, so you’ll never have to say, “If I could just go
back …”
Watercraft operators
must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the
waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to
ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

MDC's Free Fishing Weekend Coming
Up.........
Missouri residents looking to go fishing have
been required to possess a valid fishing permit since April
15th. They will need to carry the permit for the remainder of
the summer, except for a few days during June.
According to Sara Turner, the Missouri
Department of Conservation Nature Center Manager, Missouri
anglers must have a valid permit if they are between 16 and 64
years of age, except on June 6th and 7th during the MDC's free
fishing weekend.
Turner said that during the free fishing
weekend, anyone can fish in the state of Missouri, whether they
are a resident of not, without having to purchase a

Fishy Tales From Charlestown, South
Carolina
A 6 Year Old Boy Reeled In a Stolen
Safe........
After recently taking up magnet fishing, 6
year old Knox Brewer was doing a little fishing on Mother's Day.
he discovered something big on the bottom of Whitney Lake.
With the assistance of a nearby stranger, the
boy reeled in a locked safe. They pried it open to find some
treasure that included jewelry, a notebook and a checkbook.
The boy's father Jonathan called police and
found out that the safe had been reported stolen eight years
before from a neighbor. While the expensive items were gone,
the woman was pleased to get some of her missing charm pieces
back........

Mississippi River Near Hannibal,
Missouri
Local Farmers Have Avoided Major
Flooding........
This year, local farmers have been able to
avoid any major Mississippi River flooding issues, even though a
flood warning was issued earlier this week. The Mississippi
River is expected to crest at 16.1 feet, which is just over the
16 foot flood stage.
Kenny Lovelace, a Marion County Soil and
Water Conservation District board member says that the region
was able to avoid snow melt from Minnesota, which caused last
year's flooding. The Mississippi River crested at 29 feet in
2019.
Lovelace says that there were some fields
flooded earlier in the year and it was a bit wet trying to get
crops in, but overall they have not had any issues due to
flooding........

The Golden Eagle Ferry is OPEN
03/20/2020
Stay safe!
Thank You,

For the safety of our customers, our staff, and our
families, in addition to our normal operations, we are offering
some alternative means of interacting with us as well – for both
purchasing products (from parts to a new boat) and for your
service needs.
If you’d like to shop any new or used inventory with us with
minimized social interaction, we can schedule individual
appointments or send you a virtual video tour of a unit. You can
always shop our inventory on our website as well, at
www.stcharlesboat.com. We currently have some huge discounts
on our in stock inventory! If you’re interested in a private
appointment, please e-mail us at zeke@stcharlesboat.com or you
can call us at 636-947-0106 during normal business hours.
For your service needs, we can schedule a touchless drop off and
pick-up with you. For touchless drop off or pick-up, e-mail
Jerry at jerry@stcharlesboat.com or Zeke at zeke@stcharlesboat.com
for scheduling and instructions.
We realize that this too will pass and we can return to a more
normal routine, which means getting back to boating for many of
us!
We will keep our customer’s updated by posting on our
website and
Facebook page.

Fat Boys Restaurant at
Two Rivers Marina
Hi Bill,
They are diligently working to get things in order. The have
been working long hours trying to get the building in shape,
lots of painting and cleaning. It is going to happen, however
they are a bit behind because of Illinois paperwork. I expect an
opening sometime in March. They are keeping the name "Fat Boys".
