Mississippi River Near La Crosse, Wisconsin Latest Snowfall Expected To Push The Mississippi River Levels Higher........
While the snow is melting in the north, the Mississippi River may end up rising to historic levels by this weekend. Following the most recent snowfall, the National Weather Service in La Crosse is forecasting a possible Sunday crest of 15.3 feet on Monday, taking the Mississippi River near the top 5 all-time highest crests for the region.
According to Todd Shea, Meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service in La Crosse, it will take some time for the latest snowfall to make it's way into the Mississippi River.
Shea says that it will most likely affect some of the Mississippi River's local tributaries within the next several days. He adds that it will take awhile longer for the water to make it to the Mississippi River........

Mississippi River Management Fifth Circuit Court Ruled In Corps' Favor On Bonnet Carre Lawsuit Dismissal....
A three judge panel in the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled in favor of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regarding a lawsuit challenging the operation and usage of the Bonnet Carre Spillway along the Lower Mississippi River in Louisiana.
The lawsuit was intended to require the Corps to prepare a supplemental Environmental Impact Statement, which plaintiffs argues was required under the National Environmental Policy Act.
The Bonnet Carre Spillway is the lowest spillway of the Mississippi River and Tributaries Project that was enacted after the Great Flood of 1927. MR&T refers to a set of actions the Corps takes in the event of flooding, and flood control structures that the Corps uses to pass high water to prevent flooding........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer Suzuki Marine To Make 800 Mile Journey On Biofuel........
Suzuki Marine USA will be making the trip from Jacksonville, Florida to Washington D.C. aboard a Sea Pro 259 center console powered by Suzuki DF 140 outboards fueled only with EcoGen 90 sustainable marine fuel.
The nearly 800 mile journey will end up at the 2023 American Boating Congress on the Washington D.C. waterfront May 8 - 10, 2023. The boat will be used by Suzuki and the National Marine Manufactures Association for on-water demonstration rides during ABC.
EcoGen 90 is a non-ethanol based fuel that it's manufacturer, VP Racing Fuels, claims improved fuel efficiency, reduces emissions, reduces carbon output and in ideal for use in the marine environment........

Mississippi River Management Report: Mississippi River Farmland Should Get More Fed Conservation Funds.........
A recently released report from the non-profit Environmental Working Group claims that the Mississippi River Basin is not getting enough conservation funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Environmental Working Group says that one of the USDA's biggest conservation programs, which is focused on farming practices, has sent approximately one third of it's funding into the basin, even though the Mississippi River Basin covers over one million square miles in 31 states.
Sarah Graddy, Environmental Working Group spokesperson says that there needs to be more funding for conservation, and we need to get those funds to the places that they will have the greatest impacts.........

For several centuries, lighthouses were used to guide to sailors, protecting them from hazards that may endanger themselves and their vessels, making them a valuable tool for navigation along rivers and coastlines.
At time marched on, so has technology, which offers newer and better ways to safely navigate treacherous waters. As a result, many lighthouses have been relegated to tourist attraction duty.
The Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse was never used as a beacon for navigation, but instead was constructed to honor Hannibal's most legendary citizens, Mark Twain.
The original lighthouse was erected atop Cardiff Hill in 1935 to commemorate Mark Twain's 100th birthday. A second lighthouse was constructed in 1960 after the original was destroyed in a windstorm. The 1960 lighthouse was replaced in 2019........

The Mississippi River Basin USDA Conservation Funding........
A recent report from the nonprofit environmental and health organization, Environmental Working Group, claims that the Mississippi River Basin is not receiving enough conservation funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Environmental Quality Incentives Programs is one of the USDA's largest conservation program and assists farmers with integrating conservation practices such as cover cropping and nutrient management.
The report shows that 36 percent of funding from this program was allocated to the Mississippi River Basin region between 2017 and 2020. Sarah Graddy, spokesperson for the Environmental Working Group says that the Mississippi River basin needs more funding for conservation........

Missouri River Management Officials Inspect Missouri River Channel Repairs........
Earlier this month, the navigation season began on the Missouri River, and officials with the Kansas Coty Engineer District inspected some of the repair work being carried out to restore the navigation channel to it's pre-2019 flood condition near Atchison, Kansas.
The historic 2019 flood caused significant damage to the navigational channel, which is a crucial transportation artery for agricultural goods from the Midwest region.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District had received $249 billion in funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and a portion of these funds have been used to repair the navigation channel........

Next month, two tiki-themed party boats will be setting sail near Cincinnati, Ohio, offering scenic cruises along the Ohio River. SS Tiki Tours are customizable, you advise the captain where you want to go or anchor.
Cruise passengers will need to bring their own food, drinks and ice. The tiki boats do offer a sound system aboard where you can play any music you'd like. There is restroom facilities on board for the longer trips.

Added Sunday Mississippi River Flooding Forecast High Chances For Moderate Flooding........
As of Thursday, the National Weather Service reports that high chances for moderate flooding continue for the majority of locations, but the chances of major flooding based solely on snowmelt are extremely low.
The dry soil from last year's drought has absorbed considerably more water than expected, dampening the initial runoff responses and reducing the expected flood severity.
The NWS says that based upon snowmelt alone, they are expecting river levels similar to those seen in April 2019. At this point, there is no indication that the flooding will last as long as it did in 2019........

Mississippi River Near Davenport, Iowa Mississippi River Crest Predicted By First Week Of May........
While the risk of flooding along the Rock or Wapsipinicon Rivers remains near normal for this year, the Mississippi River's flood risk in the Quad Cities region remains above normal.
The Mississippi River is slowly rising and as of Thursday afternoon, it was just over a foot below flood stage. The Mississippi River in the Quad Cities region is expected to rise to the 15 foot flood stage by the end of next week.
A considerable amount of the snow pack has melted in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Luckily, much of the water has been absorbed by the soil, leading to less runoff making it's way to the Mississippi River........

Added Sunday Mississippi River Journeys Paddlers Attempting To Set World Record Down The Mississippi River........
Next month, a group of paddlers will be embarking on a trip along the Mississippi River with the goal of setting a new world record for paddling down the Mississippi River as quickly as possible.
Minneapolis, Minnesota native Scott Miller and his team of three other paddlers intend to break the current world record of 17 days, 19 hours and 46 minutes. Some of the experienced crew members unsuccessfully attempted this feat before.
This is Miller's second world record attempt. Back in 2021, Miller's canoe capsized in a storm, dashing his world record efforts. This year, the canoe is outfitted with safety lights, navigation systems and even sleeping accommodations........

Added Sunday Missouri River Near Kansas City, Missouri KC Volunteers Cleaned Up The River........
On Saturday, the Missouri River Relief cleanup drew over 150 volunteers, even with the possibility of severe rain. The volunteers cleaned up a 10 mile section of the Kansas City riverfront.
Since it's founding in 2001, Missouri River Relief has hosted 212 river cleanup events with more then 31,000 volunteers participating. During that time, they have removed more than 2 million pounds of trash.
Alyssa Thomas, the stewardship and outreach coordinator for Missouri River Relief says that the cleanups help keep the Missouri River healthy and keeps the trash from flowing into larger bodies of water........

Mississippi River At West Alton, Missouri The Maple Island Access Area Is Re-Opening........
Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' River Project Office report that the Maple Island Access Area in West Alton will be re-opening to the public on Saturday. The area had been closed so it could be used as a staging point for the work on the Melvin Price Locks and Dam.
Katelynn Dearth, Natural Resources Specialist and Park Ranger for the Rivers Project says that they are pleased to welcome back anglers, bird watchers and other members of the public to the Maple Island Access Area.
Dearth adds that while the closure was necessary, they are eager to re-open the Maple Island Access Area because they are aware that it is an important river access point for the community........

Ohio RIver Near Louisville, Kentucky The Methanol Barge Has Been Safely Removed From The Dam........
The barge loaded with methanol which had lodged against the McAlpine Dam on the Ohio RIver near Louisville, Kentucky has been safely removed with no leaks detected. The barge had been carrying 1,400 metric tons of liquid methanol, which was off-loaded prior to the barge's removal.
Louisville Metro Emergency Services reports that there are no indications that the barge's cargo tanks had been breached and testing never revealed any detectible methanol in the air or water.
One dry cargo barge loaded with corn remained pinned against the dam. Coast Guard Spokesman, Petty Officer Gabriel Wisdom, says that the barge was not affecting navigation and they hope that salvage crews will be able to work on removing it soon........

White River Near Goshen, Arkansas Angler In Kayak Caught 102 Pound Prehistoric River Monster........
Last week, officials with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission congratulated a man for catching a fish that weighed more than 100 pounds. They reported that Robert Murphy of Fayetteville, Arkansas recently reeled in a 102 pound paddlefish while fishing from a kayak.
Wildlife officials stated that Murphy accidentally snagged the massive zooplankton-eating paddlefish, which is also known as a spoonbill, while walleye fishing in the Upper White River near Goshen, Arkansas.
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission states that the prehistoric paddlefish came up a bit short of the state record of 118 pounds set in 2020, but they still referred to Murphy's catch as massive........

The cruises, which are offered on the first Wednesday of each month, are open to high school and college student groups, educators and educational administrators that are interested in learning about the Ag Coast and the variety of career opportunities available.

On Thursday, crews were working to fit the framework for a water-resistant door on the West Broadway side of Ardent Mill along the Mississippi River at Alton, Illinois.
Ever since the flood of 2019, the second worst flood in recorded history, Ardent Mills has been working to better prepare themselves for future Mississippi River flooding.
Water-resistant doors are in the process of being installed in the lowest sections of the mill. Ardent Mill has also fortified the lowest portions of the mill property with a concrete flood wall........

Mississippi River At Rock Island, Illinois Illinois Senate Supports New Rock Island Port District........
Late last month, the Rock Island Regional Port District made a step towards reality after the Illinois Senate passed a resolution that would create the district with almost unanimous support. The bill still has to pass the Senate and then be signed into law by the governor.
The bi-partisan legislation was written by State Senator Milek Halpin (D-Rock Island), who said that there are 19 other regional port districts across the state, so it would make good economic sense to create a port district in Rock Island.
Plans state that the Rock Island Regional Port District will be established within Rock Island city limits, with the city council serving as the district's governing and administrative body........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer Yamaha Marine Opened Innovation Center........
Yamaha's U.S. Marine Business Unit recently announced the grand opening of their new Marine Innovation Center in Kennesaw, Georgia. The 75,280 square foot facility houses the Yamaha Marine Connected Division and the company's Marine Development, Yamaha Marine Product Management and Yamaha Marine Technical Marketing divisions.
New products now under development at the facility include DockPoint, the latest feature of Helm Master EX Full Maneuverability, which will automatically dock a properly equipped vessel, and Siren Marine products, which allow boaters to monitor and control the functionality of their boats via mobile devices.
Ben Speciale, president Yamaha U.S. Marine Business Unit says that they believe that Georgia is an excellent location for business growth and development. The Marine Innovation center is the company's fourth major facility in the state........

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois Chamber of Commerce Launched App........
Jamie Clayton, President of the Grafton Chamber of Commerce recently announced that the Grafton Illinois app is up and running. The Chamber of Commerce launched the app to inform people where they can visit and what they can do in the city.
Clayton says that Grafton Alderman Andy Jackson was instrumental in launching the free Grafton Illinois app. Clayton adds that there are QR codes located all over Grafton and that the app lists everything going on in Grafton, including events, destinations such as Aerie's or Raging Rivers and overnight stays.
With the summer tourism season drawing near, the Chamber is promoting the new app as the best way to stay current on the variety of events and activities occurring in Grafton on a weekly basis........

U.S. Waterways Federal Judge Blocks Rule Intended To Protect Waterways........
On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Daniel L. Hovland in Bismarck, North Dakota temporarily blocked regulations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers pending the outcome of a lawsuit filed by 24 states.
These regulations were finalized in December 2022, repealing a rule implemented during President Donald Trump's administration but thrown out by federal courts. The regulations define which waters of the United States are protected by the Clean Water Act.
Opponents of the regulations call the rules an example of federal overreach and claim that they would unfairly burden farmers and ranchers. Among the states the preliminary injunction affects are Iowa, Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana........

Mississippi River Near St. Louis As Northern Snow Melts, The Mississippi River Will Rise.......
The National Weather Service reports that the Upper Midwest will see much warmer weather this week, with temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees higher than normal.
The higher temps will lead to more snowmelt and a rising Mississippi River. The water should reach the St. Louis region by the end of April, possibly causing flooding along the Mississippi River later this month.
The National Weather Service says that the flooding may reach as far south as the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. It is not certain how much flooding can be expected, as there is some rainfall expected in the St. Louis region this weekend also........

Mississippi River At West Alton, Missouri Captain's License Course Coming Up........
For those that are interested in becoming a riverboat captain but believed learning how would be inconvenient, The Course Captain's School, based in Ohio, will be coming to West Alton April 15 - 23, 2023.
The 56 hour course will run from 9 am to 6 pm April 15 - 16 and April 22 - 23 and from 6 pm to 9 pm April 17 - 19 and April 20 - 21. The course is being hosted by Harbor Point Yacht Club, which is where the courses will be held.
Captain Ron Getter of the True Course Captain's School will be leading the classes, which are U.S. Coast Guard approved. Other courses available by request include tow endorsement, upgrade to master, sail endorsement, marine radio operator's license and renewal of license........

Colorado River Basin Feds Float Plans To Reduce Water Drawn From Colorado River........
On Tuesday, the Biden administration released an environmental analysis that lays out two ways that western states and tribes that rely on the overdrawn Colorado River could reduce the amount of water they use, but declined to publicly take a side on the best option.
The two plans outlined by federal officials would achieve a reduction of at least 2 million acre-feet of water by 2024 in addition to existing cuts that the states and other users had previously agreed to .
The extensive environmental analysis released by the Biden administration considers two options for cuts and a third which takes no action. States, tribes and other water users will have until May 30 to comment prior to the feds announce their formal decision........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Eastbound Jefferson Barracks Bridge Lane Closing Wednesday........
On Wednesday, the Missouri Department of Transportation will be closing a lane across the Jefferson Barracks Bridge spanning the Mississippi River in order to make emergency repairs to the pavement.
MoDOT crews will close the right hand eastbound Interstate 255 from 3 am to 1 pm on April 12. When the lane is closed, pavement repairs will be made. The closure was originally planned for Saturday........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Lane Closures Scheduled For The Clark Bridge........
The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that there will be lane restrictions on the U.S.67/Clark Bridge starting at 7:30 am Wednesday, April 12th, weather permitting.
Crews will close down the northbound, right hand lane in order to perform emergency bridge deck patching. All lanes are scheduled to re-open by 3 pm on Thursday........

Looking Up-River Mississippi River Near Dubuque, Iowa Flooding Forecast Highest In More Than 20 Years........
Over the next several days, the weather will be warming up across the central United States, spurring a significant amount of melting of the snowpack near the Mississippi River's headwaters.
The National Weather Service in Duluth, Minnesota says that a near record amount of water is stored in the snowpack, and it is about to be released into the Mississippi River.
The National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wisconsin stated that this spring's flood threat may rival 2001, which is the second-highest crest in northeastern Iowa after 1965........

The organizers of the Great Illinois River Raft Race are calling on artists, aspiring artists, designers and river rats to design a T-shirt for the annual event. Submissions must include "2023", "Hardin, IL." and "The Great Illinois River Raft Race". Submissions must be received by April 21, 2023.
This year's Great Illinois River Raft Race is scheduled for Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 3 pm. The Great Illinois River Race will be held on the Illinois River along the Hardin riverfront.
The Great River Raft Race was a wildly successful event during the late '70 s and early 80's. The event is making a return to celebrate the Village of Hardin's 175th anniversary. In addition to the race, the event will include food, music, games, fireworks and more........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Man Survived Leap From The Clark Bridge........
At around 2 pm Monday afternoon, a man that reportedly jumped off of the Clark Bridge into the Mississippi River at Alton survived and was able to swim to the Illinois shore.
Police and Firefighters had been alerted to a man on the bridge and that he had reportedly jumped into the river. Several Alton Police cars were dispatched to the scene with Firefighters and paramedics.
Police spotted the man swimming towards the sandy Illinois bank after the approximately 75 foot fall. Alton Police Sergeant reached the man and helped him to shore and performed the initial check on him for injuries as he coughed up water. He was transported to a hospital for treatment........

Missouri Fishing News Bowfisherman Shot Record Bullhead In Southern Missouri
On Tuesday March 14th, Mitchell Dering decided to do a little fishing when he got off work, so he headed to the Duck Creek Conservation Area with his bow and ended up catching a record breaking fish.
Dering spotted a bullhead in the water and took his shot. He knew that the fish was big, so the next day, Dering took the brown bullhead to the Missouri Department of Conservation's Southeast Regional Office in Wappapello to weigh it on a certified scale.
This brown bullhead tipped the scale at 4 pounds, shattering the previous record of 2 pounds, 7 ounces set in 1994. The fish also topped the current bowfishing record of 3 pounds, 4 ounces........

Mississippi River Near Wickliffe, Kentucky Grant Recommendations Help Western Kentucky Port Project Proceed........
A recommendation for a $300,000 state grant is helping the Western Kentucky Riverport Authority closer to constructing a riverport just south of the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.
The port authority board has a public-private partnership on 69 acres of land located at Lower Mississippi Mile 950.2, The parcel has approximately 2,000 feet of riverfront and two mooring cells owned by the Phoenix Paper mill next door.
Four far western Kentucky counties are teaming up on the port project. Once the plans have developed further, a formal lease agreement with Phoenix Paper will be sought........
