Lock And Dam Closures Will Curb 2023 Coke Shipments........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that they will be closing the Brandon Road, Dresden Island and Marseilles locks and dams from June 1 through September 30, 2023.  The closures are expected to hinder coke transport via barge from some Mid-America refineries.

The scheduled work is part of a Corps plan for repairing eight lock and dam sites along the waterway.  The repair schedule included a short closure in 2019 followed up by an extended closure in 2020.

Coke producing refineries are working to get ready for the coming closures by developing plans for shipping via rail and truck transportation.  Some coke could be held in storage awaiting shipment........

Making The Mississippi River More Resilient........

This year, the Mississippi River has fallen to historic low levels due to drought conditoins within the Mississippi River basin.  Normally, the river's tributaries would help feed the Mississippi River as it winds 2,300 miles from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico.

The drought has been a logistical emergency for commercial river traffic.  It is also a call for a better understanding of the Mississippi River watershed and what humans can do to safeguard and manage it during times of change.

Clint Wilson, an expert in Mississippi River hydraulics and a professor at Louisiana State University says that now is a good time to consider making the river "more resilient"........

State Of Missouri Honored For Namesake Battleship Preservation Efforts........

The Battleship Missouri Memorial recently unveiled a new plaque aboard the USS Missouri that recognizes the state's preservation efforts for America's last-commissioned battleship.

Visitors to the Battleship Missouri Memorial will now find a hand crafted teak plaque affixed to the side of Gun Turret 1 of the "Mighty Mo". Officials say that the teak plaque symbolizes the restoration efforts for the teak deck of the battleship.

Over the years, the state of Missouri raised approximately $388,000 to restore the "Mighty Mo".  These donations have been used to help restore the teak decking that was in need of extensive repair due to several decades of wear and tear........

This Year, Commercial Navigational Lockages Below 10 Year Average........

During the 2022 navigation season, the locks and dams within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, which reaches from St. Paul to Guttenberg, Iowa, saw commercial navigation lockages below the 10-year average.

According to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers press release, the annual shipping numbers are dependant upon a variety of factors, including weather, river flows and the length of the navigation season.  At the same time, the Corps included recreational vessels to reduce the total number of lockages.

At Red Wing, Minnesota there were 1,154 commercial navigation lockages, supporting over 6 million tons or about 3,445 barges.  There were also 1,274 commercial lockages moving over 6 million tons of commodities,  6,445 recreational vessels locked through during 2,500 lockages.  17 additional lockages occurred from the Corps and other government agencies........

Mississippi River Near Memphis, Tennessee

Rising River Levels Could Boost Economy........

After recently hitting an all-time low, the level of the Mississippi River is slowly rising, as recent rainfall across the Mid-South has helped increase the water levels.

Back in October, the Mississippi River water level gauge at Memphis officially dropped to an all-time low record of -10.79 feet.  As of Thursday, the river level at Memphis was at +2.19 feet.

The level of the Mississippi River could continue to rise through December into the New Year, with between 8 to 10 feet of water predicted.  The boost in river levels could lower food prices if the effects are positive for farmers and barges shipping goods along the water........

Corps Balancing Storage, Releases In Upstream Reservoirs........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are engaged in a balancing act with the releases from the upstream reservoirs and dams along the Missouri River in South Dakota.

According to John Remus, Chief of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District's Missouri River Basin Water Management Division, the Missouri River reservoir system is unbalanced, and will need to be evened out.

Remus says that the Mid-June, early July flooding along the Yellowstone River put a lot of water into the Garrison Reservoir, as the Corps will be increasing releases from Garrison and raising the Oahe Reservoir by about five feet........

Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana

State May See Fed Funds For MR-GO Restoration........

The state of Louisiana may soon be in-line to receive federal funding for the repair of widespread ecological damage caused by the Mississippi River - Gulf Outlet shipping channel.  The MR-GO was closed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, as the storm surge up the channel contributed to the devastation of New Orleans.

Congress appears to be primed to pass legislation that would clarify that the federal government is responsible for financing a plan to restore wetlands eroded by the no-closed MR-GO waterway.  While the funding would still have to be appropriated, the determination of who should pay for the project would be a major win for Louisiana state officials.

The U.S> House of Representatives approved the measure on Thursday, with the Senate expected to do the same in the next several days.  U.S. Representative Garret Graves, R, Baton Rouge says that this is an important project that needs to be completed, as it mitigates the adverse effects of the federal project that was the MR-GO waterway........

Storms Refilling The Mississippi....  Cargo Moving Once Again....

Thanks to an early Christmas Present from Mother Nature, in the form of heavy rainfall, barge and ship captains are finally getting the water needed to safely navigate along the Mississippi River.

The moderate to severe drought that has affected the 2,300 mile long Mississippi River has affected ports like Cairo, Illinois, which has exposed river bottoms that hadn't been visible for more than 100 years.

According to Pat Chambers, Chief of Operations in the Mississippi River Valley for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the best water level increases have been between Cairo, Illinois all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.  River levels at Cairo have increased by about 1 foot........

Mississippi River Near West Quincy, Missouri

New Film Looks At The Flood OF '93, James Scott & His Life Sentence........

A new short film on Vice Network's YouTube page takes a look back the Mississippi River flooding in West Quincy in 1993 and whether James Scott was actually guilty of the crime he was convicted for.

Scott, who was 24 at the time, was convicted under an obscure 1979 Missouri law for intentionally "causing a catastrophe" when he caused the West Quincy levee to fail.  His alleged motive was to strand his wife on the other side of the river, freeing him to party and go fishing with his friends.

Journalist Adam Pitluk has filmed the episode of Overlooked during which he investigated how the local community and law enforcement officials laid the blame of the levee's failure on Scott, who to this day maintains his innocence........

The railroad bridge across the Missouri River at St. Charles collapsed for the third time! Thirty one freight cars plunged into the river. It was also proving to be a hazard for steamboats.

Boat Manufacturer

Beneteau Introduced Two Electric Models........

At the Salon Nautic de Paris, Beneteau has debuted two new electric sailing yachts, the Oceanis 30.1 and the First 44.  The new models are the continued realization of Groupe Beneteau's sustainability strategy which focuses on eco-friendly manufacturing processes and product development.

Gianguido Girotti, Boat Division CEO of the Groupe Beneteau says that the company is focusing on reducing the environmental impacts in two key areas:  composite materials and propulsion systems.

According to Fabian Bez, CEO of Torqeedo GmbH, the partnership between Groupe Beneteau and Torqeedo continues to bring new, exciting vessels to the marine market, which is expanding boater's opportunities to go 100 percent emission-free........

Lake Boaters !

Lake Of The Ozarks

Pay-At-The-Pump Marinas Open Year-Round........

The arrival of chillier temperatures along the Lake of the Ozarks brings with it quieter days out on the water.  The cold doesn't ward off all boaters, however, as anglers and boaters that do not need to winterize still take advantage of occasional balmy days to enjoy a mid-winter boat ride.

For these die-hard boaters and avid anglers, there is but one question to answer:  Where do you gas up on the Lake?  Thankfully, there are a few self-serve, pay-at-the-pump marinas on the Lake who are open year-round.  They are:

○  Village Marina, located at the 3 Mile Marker

○  Toad Cove Yacht Club and Marina, located at the 7 Mile Marker

○  Bridgeview Marina, located at the 1.5 Mile Marker of the Glaize Arm

Shipwreck News From Florida

Shipwreck Discovered In Daytona Beach Shores........

The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum's Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program is working with the Florida Department of State Bureau of Archaeological Research and the Florida Public Archaeological Network to study a shipwreck that was recently discovered in Daytona Beach Shores.

THe wreckage had started appearing following Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, but it has been partially buried off and on by the tides.  Chuck Meide, an archaeologist with the St. Augustine Lighthouse has confirmed that the object is indeed a shipwreck.

Meide says that the wreck is likely a cargo-carrying sailing vessel from the 1800s that would have sailed within sight of land and used the lighthouses for navigation.  He added that the vessel was reburied by the time they arrived on site, however, witnesses reported that the wreckage was between 80 and 100 feet long........

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded the University of Missouri - Columbia a $740,000 grant that will fund research into the identification and measurement of economic benefits of improved water quality.

In particular, the grant will help MU work with community partners in appraising how different populations value water quality improvements and aquatic resources in Midwestern reservoirs.

Hop On A Plane For A Mini-Vacation

News Release From BoatUS

December 06, 2022

CORONA DEL MAR, Calif., Dec. 6, 2022 – After a Covid hiatus the Sailing Convention for Women is back with full sails and expanded learning opportunities and slated for Saturday, April 1, 2023. Held at Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Corona Del Mar, California, the event marks the 33rd year offering beginning-to-experienced women sailors a chance to learn and enjoy camaraderie and fun through an all-day series of on-the-water instruction and shore-based workshops.

“The Convention gives women an opportunity to meet other women sailors, discuss options for cruising, racing and recreational sailing, and find out about women’s sailing organizations in their area, as well as instructional programs available,” described by founder and producer, Gail Hine. “We have something meaningful for everyone,” one attendee claimed, “The energy level and networking opportunity at this convention is amazing!”

Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS). has sponsored the event for nearly three decades.

Some of the workshop topics include Suddenly Singlehanded, Steer with the Sails, Intro to AIS, Avoid Mistakes & Mayhem, Prepare for Passage Making, Basic Navigation, and the ever-useful, Docking. Three levels of on-the-water sailing instruction are also offered.

The day begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 8 p.m., starting with a generous breakfast to fuel the sessions of morning instruction and workshops. A buffet lunch will launch sailors into an afternoon of continued learning opportunities, followed by a spirited happy hour. The evening is capped with dinner and guest speaker Marie Rogers, who in 2019, became the first black woman to serve as commodore at the historic Los Angeles Yacht Club, and likely one of the first to helm a major U.S. yacht club.

Rogers, who will share stories of inspiration and passion for sailing, is the 2021 BoatUS/NWSA Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award honoree and an avid racer. She completed the 50th Transpac and races today along the West Coast aboard Marie, a Nelson Marek 55, with her husband, Bill. Closer to home she’s at the helm of her J-29, Rush Street.

Those interested in attending should mark their calendars for February 1 when convention registration opens at sailingconventionforwomen.com. A special early bird attendance for $250 will be available through February 28 and includes workshops, breakfast, lunch, dinner, souvenirs, raffle prize tickets and session handouts. Registration fees increase $20 each month through April 1. Prepaid registrations are required and for the best selection of classes women are urged to register early.

For more information on the convention, contact Gail Hine (gail@sailingconventionforwomen.com).

A Look Back:  Dioxin, Flood Wiped Out Times Beach........

While Trolling The Internet....  We reeled in a photo gallery that looks back 40 years to December 5, 1982, when the Meramec River flooded the tiny town of Times Beach, sealing it's fate.  Only about a month earlier, residents learned that dangerous levels of dioxin were present in the soil.  The contamination was traced back to waste oil sprayed on the town's dirt roads........

Kansas River Near Topeka, Kansas

Rare Lake Sturgeon Caught ........

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has confirmed that angler Kevin Zirjacks recently reeled in a lake sturgeon.  This fish is reportedly so rare that biologists with the KDWP have only recorded 15 lake sturgeon being caught over the last 25 years.

At one time, lake sturgeon wear found within the Mississippi and Missouri River basins as well as the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes Basins.  Now, the fish is becoming more difficult to find in the southernmost parts of it's range, mostly due to pollution and river drainage issues.

Lake sturgeon are known for their long life spans, reportedly up to 125 years and for their rows of bony plates that give them the appearance of an armored torpedo........

Mississippi River Near Davenport, Iowa

Low River Levels May Affect Fish This Winter Into Next Year........

The low river levels along the Upper Mississippi River in the Quad Cities region may end up affecting fish this winter and into the New Year.  Currently, boaters are able to see catfish holes along the riverbanks which are normally underwater.

Fisheries Biologist Andy Fowler with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources' Fairport Fish Hatchery says that the low water in the backwaters of the Mississippi River could result in more fish kills.

Low water levels could also result in higher concentrations of pollution and chemicals, which can contribute to the proliferation of bacteria and algal blooms that compete with fish for oxygen........

A December 2012

 Sail From Palisades to Grafton

Click pic to enlarge

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2012......were sent to us by Capt'n Mike Costello

Saturday we put together 9 sailboats and sailed from Palisades to Grafton. We had Lunch at the Ruebel Restaurant. They have great food and a restored bar from the 1904 World's Fair, very impressive. Grafton is always fun and all the restaurants and stores always appreciate the business. After that we strolled down and got an ice cream before we headed back to our boats. Yes, eating ice cream in December on the streets of Grafton, sweet. It was 72 degrees. The breezes picked up considerably on the way back and we all rolled into our harbors about dusk. It was a great day.

Thanks Barry for putting it together for us. Sandy Costello snapped the photos of Matt Flerlage’s boat, Tuesdays Child with the colorful Genoa. Denny Swandt is crewing for him.

Ohio River At Louisville, Kentucky

First Holiday Boat Parade Held On The Ohio River........

On Sunday evening, brilliantly decorated vessels hit the Ohio River for the first ever Holiday Boat Parade.  Boats of all shapes and sizes were decked out for the holidays.

Boaters departed from the Juniper Beach Docks in Prospect.  The parade headed south to Knights of Columbus on River Road and then to the East End Bridge, and on to Captain's Quarters and back.

Following the boat parade, there was a bonfire and a chili party along the Ohio River banks at Juniper Beach.  Andy Will, owner of Juniper Beach Docks says that they though the parade would be the perfect way to kick off the Christmas and holiday season........

Lake Michigan At Chicago, Illinois

The Coast Guard Christmas Ship Has Arrived........

This weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard announced that their 2022 Christmas Tree Ship trip has been a success.  The crew of the cutter Mackinaw had arrived alongside the Navy Pier a few days prior and has completed the offloading of 1,200 Christmas trees.

The Mackinaw's annual holiday cheer trip traces it's roots to the ill-fated Rouse Simmons, the Great Lakes' famous Christmas Tree Ship, which sank in Lake Michigan in 1912 while transporting a large load of Christmas trees from Northern Michigan to Chicago.

In lat November, the Mackinaw and it's crew left Michigan, and motored down Lake Michigan and worked along the way.  The crew was retrieving big warm-weather aids to navigation from the lake and offloading them on land for the winter........

     River History....

05 December, 1963 in River History

Three painters from the Star Sign Co. began painting their version of the Piasa Bird on a bluff that overlooks the Mississippi River above Alton. A few weeks, prior, crews from the Hellrung Construction Company worked to prepare the bluff for paint. They had to remove close to a half ton of rock and then the 2,500 square foot area received a base coat. The painting replaced a previous duplication of the Piasa Bird that had been removed during the construction of the Great River Road........

In 1984 the Piasa Bird was painted on a steel plate and hung from the bluff like a sign and the current version was painted on bluff in 1999

Did You Know ?

Mississippi River History

The Mississippi River Was Once Called The River Of The Immaculate Conception...

Typically, the word "immaculate" isn't normally associated with the Muddy Mississippi River, however, the Jesuit explorer Father Jacques Marquette saw things a bit differently.

Marquette came from France as a missionary to Canada in 1666.  He was one of the first Europeans to name the Mississippi River, which he explored and mapped with his companion, Louis Joliet starting in 1673.

The name Marquette gave to this crucial artery in the center of North America was The River of the Immaculate Conception.  The entrustment of the river to the Virgin Mary was part of the French Jesuits' mission to evangelize the Native Americans in the region........

Update:  Ohio Man Sentenced To Prison For Attempted Tow Boat Bombings...

On Thursday, 43 year old Nathaniel Blayn Becker was sentenced to eight years and one month on prison followed by three years of supervised release in connection with pipe bombs found aboard towboats along the Ohio River.

On April 19, 2022, a federal jury found Becker guilty of two counts of possession of an unregistered destructive device and two counts of placement of a destructive device on a vessel.

Law enforcement officers recovered the destructive devices from two different tow boats moving barges along the Ohio River on October 21 and October 25, 2021.  Investigators believe that the devices were dropped onto the tow boats from a bridge.

On October 26, similar devices were found aboard a third tow boat,  Those devices contained non-explosive septic tank cleaner and Becker was not charged for that incident........

Corps To Study Potential Changes To Missouri River Levees........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has agreed to consider making some changes to levees along the Missouri River in an effort to avoid a repeat of recent major floods, especially the 2019 flood.

After the 2019 flood, state officials in Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska had worked together to suggest changes to the levees that would reduce future flooding risks.

According to Colonel Travis Rayfield, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, federal law places restrictions on what the Corps can do when repairing levees damaged during flooding........

The Season Has Come To A Close........

The Motor Vessel Melba L. Engemann, operated by Missouri River Towing, which is owned by Hermann Sand and Gravel Inc., took the final southbound tow of nine barges hauling soybeans from Omaha, Nebraska to wrap up the 2022 navigation season along the Missouri River.

The Missouri River flow support season had ended three days early on November 28th at the mouth of the Missouri River.  The flow reductions to the winter rate of 12,000 cubic feet per second from 30,000 cfs was scheduled for November 19.

Steven Engemann, president of the family owned Hermann Sand & Gravel says that despite the widely publicized drought conditions in the western plains, navigation along the Missouri River was in good shape this past year........

Yazoo Canal News Vicksburg, Mississippi

Drought Conditions Reveal Mystery Shipwreck........

Back in mid-October, an angler along the Yazoo Canal north of Vicksburg, Mississippi came across the remains of a 1920-era vessel in the mud of the canal bed.  The vessel is normally concealed by the muddy water.

The angler advised the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to look at the wreck.  Kad Henderson with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District's Regulatory Division is working to identify the vessel.

The stern of the wooden vessel was partially exposed and the vessel's small but heavily built construction leads Henderson to believe that the vessel was a tugboat.  A key identification feature is the vessel's large exposed propeller shaft as well as concrete between the vessel's ribs........

Andrew Cullen, Yamaha's Connected Division manager says that adding Siren products to the Yamaha Dealer Network provides customers with access to knowledgeable staff who can determine what sensors and systems are right for their boat.

The standard Siren dashboard offers real-time tracking information as well as the status of monitored systems via a global 4G/5G LTE cellular network.  the optional SirenSat antenna can provide coverage when the vessel is out of cellular range........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has agreed to consider making changes to levees along the Missouri RIver in an effort to avoid repeating recent major floods.

Officials in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska have teamed up to suggest changes that could reduce flood risks following the 2019 flood.  Colonel Travis Rayfield, commander of the USACE Kansas City District says that federal law restricts what the Corps can do when reconstructing levees damaged by floodwaters.

Rayfield says that the Corps will do a study, which would give them the opportunity to reconsider how the levees are aligned and their structural composition.  He adds that this will give the Corps their first chance to possibly move levees or other structures to improve how water passes........

Mississippi River Levels

River Levels Have Improved Somewhat, Still Not Out Of The Woods........

Over the past few weeks, there have been some improvements along the inland waterways, however, the American Waterways Operators says that barge capacity along the Mississippi River is still down by 25 to 35 percent since early November.

The American Waterways Operators says that preparations should be made for when this low water event occurs again.  Lynn Muench says that without rainfall, dredges are going to be needed everywhere.

Muench adds that the U.S. Coast Guard will need to mark the channel very carefully, as it is narrowing.  It commercial river traffic cannot stay within the channel, there will be groundings, which will cause river shut-downs........

     River History....

2 December 1967 in River History

The famous River Queen steamboat sank on the St. Louis Riverfront on this day in 1967. High water, ice and other problems made saving the sinking vessel impossible. The steamboat quickly bokeup and the city of St. Louis brought in a scoop shovel to demolished what remained her, leaving behind only the steel hull.

It was indeed a famous riverboat, as it was used in the movie.. "Gone With the Wind."

The River Queen started her life in 1923 as the Eagle Packet Company steamer named the Cape Girardeau and later it became the the Greene Line's tourist steamboat, the Gordon C. Greene. She was the last packet boat built by the Howard Shipyards at Jeffersonville, Indiana and ran the rivers until 1952 when she was converted to a hotel, restaurant, bar/museum and gift shop under the names of Sarah Lee, the Sternwheeler and then the River Queen.

EPA Calls For Increase In Ethanol, Biofuels........

On Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed an increase of the amount of ethanol and other biofuels required to be blended into the nation's fuel supplies over the next three years.

EPA Administrator Michael S. Regen says that the proposal supports low-carbon renewable fuels and calls for public comment on ways to bolster the program.

Regan says that the proposal seeks to provide consumers with more options while diversifying the nation's energy mix.  The proposal is welcomed by fuel and farm groups but condemned by environmentalists and oil industry groups........

Waterfowl Hunting News

Illinois DNR:  Bird Flu Caused 300 Waterfowl Deaths........

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is warning hunters to be aware of sick or dead waterfowl, as Avian Influenza is the likely cause of at least 300 waterfowl deaths in public hunting areas in southern Illinois.

According to Mike Eichholz, a waterfowl and wetland ecologist at Southern Illinois University, there is a low risk for humans, however, you should still take precautions.

The IDNR states that hunters should avoid handling sick or dead waterfowl that they find, as well as preventing their hunting dogs and other pets from eating birds that have died from unknown causes........

Boat Manufacturer

BRP Released Their Third Quarter Results........

BRP, manufacturer of the Sea-Doo personal watercraft recently released the results of their fiscal third quarter of 2023.  The company posted revenues of CAD$2.7 billion (approximately US$ 2 billion), up 71 percent over the third quarter of fiscal 2022.

According to BRP, this was a record performance for a single quarter.  BRP president and CEO Jose' Boisjoli said that BRP delivered record fiscal 2023 third quarter results, well above expectations, driven by the team's operational discipline and solid execution.

Revenues for the marine segment fell 12.8 percent to CAD$118.8 million ($88.3 million) during the quarter compared to CAD$136.3 million ($101.3 million) during 3Q22.  The decrease was mostly due to a reduction in units sold due to supply restrictions and a cybersecurity incident that delayed new product releases........

With the end of the shipping season along the Upper Mississippi River, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be proceeding with several maintenance projects on several locks.

Mississippi River Levels

Will The Mississippi River Become The New Colorado River?

The Mississippi River Basin is currently experiencing drought conditions that have been compared to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.  The Mississippi River levels have fallen to the point that shipwrecks and sand dunes are visible where water used to flow.

Questions are arising, wondering if this is the new normal for the Mississippi River, and how will that affect the world's food supply, as 92 percent of all U.S. agricultural exports are produced within the Mississippi River basin?

Behind these questions is the same fear:  Will the Mississippi River become the new Colorado River?  Currently, the Colorado River is so oversubscribed that it no longer reaches it's historic delta........
