MILE 21.0 - MILE 19.5 - LINE WORK/SAFETY ZONE/RIVER CLOSURE Continuing until further notice, line work is being conducted between approximate Miles 21.0 and 19.5. To facilitate this operation, the COTP Upper Mississippi River has issued a Safety Zone closing the river during working hours. No vessels will be allowed to transit the area during working hours, unless permission is given by the COTP. Working hours will be transmitted via Special Marine Information Broadcasts. If there are days when work is not being conducted, then no Special Marine Information Broadcast will be transmitted. Outside of the line working hours, the waterway will be open. Mariners may contact the U.S. Coast Guard Western Rivers Command Center at (314) 269-2332, for additional information.

Good News ! Lower Mississippi River Levels River Levels Rising With Rain In The Forecast........
Over the past week, badly needed rainfall has brought with it a bit of relief to the drought-stricken regions along the Mississippi and Ohio River basins during the past week, however, dredging and occasional river closures continued.
On Thursday, November 17, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Dredge Hurley was scheduled to arrive at Lower Mississippi River Mile Marker 838 with a 24 hour closure set to start in the evening.
Another area scheduled for attention is at Mississippi River Mile Marker 459, where the Corps' Dredge Jadwin set up operations with a planned 12 hour closure of the river starting at 7 am on Friday, November 18th........

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois Cruise Ship Port, Event Plaza Top Riverfront Project Priories........
The proposed cruise ship port and an event plaza are the first two projects that the Quincy Riverfront Development Corp will proceed with as funding is secured.
According to Jeff Steinkamp, president of the Quincy Riverfront Development Corp's board of Directors, the board chose these two projects during their meeting on Wednesday.
In the city's Riverfront Master plan, the cruise port dock and related parking would facilitate generating revenue from visitors aboard the cruise ship. THe proposed design would place the cruise port dock, green space and parking areas just south of Maine Street........

Lake Of The Ozarks Shootout Sets Record For Charity........
This year, the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout donated an impressive $625,000 to lake-area charities. This year's total donations bested last year's by nearly $200,000.
According to Brett Manire, Co-Owner of Performance Boat Center, the Annual Shootout gives more back to the community than any other organization, and Performance Boat Center is pleased to be an on-going sponsor and supporter of a great cause.
The 34th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout is the largest non-sanctioned boat race in the United States and tie funds raised during that race goes back to charity. This year, the funds were donated to 40 local charities including local Police and Fire Departments........

Boat Racing News From Key West, Florida Powerboats Collide During Championship Race........
Last weekend, it was a close call for a powerboat race team when their race boat collided with a competitor during the Key West Offshore World Championship Races.
During Sunday's championship race, the Team Octane boat was heading into turn three when they were struck by the Team Shocker boat. Octane throttleman Kevin Campbell says that the Shocker boat spun out in front of them, resulting in an unavoidable collision.
Campbell says that he knew what had happened because he saw the Shocker boat come over them. After the collision, the boat spun to a sudden halt. Octane wheelman Brian LaMonica was struck unconscious. Both escaped with minor injuries........

Boat retailer OneWater Marine recently released the results of their fourth quarter and year-end results for the fiscal year which ended on September 30, 2022.
OneWater saw record revenues for fiscal 2022, with a 42 percent increase in revenue to $1.74 billion. The Gross Profit Margin grew by 260 basis points to 31.7 percent.
Net Income also set a record with a 31 percent increase to $153 million. Net income per diluted share attributable to OneWater rose by 31 percent to $9.13........

Over the past several months, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been investing and making improvements to public safety and access to the Lincoln Shields Area as well as improving access to the Piasa Creek River Access and Recreation Area and the parking area for the Ellis Island Access.
The Corps also resurfaced the levee trail at the upper end of the Chain of Rocks Canal recently and completed parking lot improvements and access at the Piasa Creek/Piasa Harbor Boat Launch.
The Corps has been increasing their efforts to utilize it's operational project lands and it's diversified water resource mission to become the main federal provider of outdoor and water based recreation........

Mississippi River Shipping The Drought's Effects On Mississippi River Shipping, Agriculture........
All along the Mississippi River Basin, below average rainfall has restricted one of the nation's major economic corridors. Some parts of the river are reporting their lowest river levels in decades and this could affect consumers across the nation.
The Mississippi River is usually one of the busiest cargo waterways in America, where approximately 500 million tons of goods every year. Over half of all U.S. grain exports are moved along the Mississippi River.
The drought, which has reduced the depth and width of the river, has resulted in traffic jams. Some estimates say that cargo moved along the river has been reduced by 45 percent, which could end up costing the economy $20 billion in losses and damages........

The Missouri Department of Conservation is looking for volunteers for a cleanup of the Mississippi River. The MDC and the volunteers intend to remove litter and help beautify the Cape Girardeau riverfront.
Angela Pierce, event organizer and naturalist at Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center says that the waterways are vital to the beauty and functionality of the community. She adds that in order to keep enjoying the natural beauty of the Mississippi River, we have to take care of it.
Volunteers have been asked to register online at the MDC website. On the day of the cleanup, volunteers are asked to meet at the Broadway entrance of Riverfront Park in downtown Cape Girardeau by 2 pm. Free T-Shirts, snacks and drinks will also be provided........

Missouri River Near Hermann, Missouri Art Exhibit Focuses On Missouri Rivers........ For more than a century, the continuously flowing waters of the Missouri River have been the backdrop of life in Missouri's Rhineland region and now, a recently launched art exhibit at the Hermann Branch of the Scenic Regional Library is hosting an art exhibit focused on Missouri's rivers.
The art exhibit, called Rivers is housed at the Gallery at the Library and features 80 different pieces of art from 25 different artists that come from all over the region, with the majority of them coming from the St. Louis area.
The art gallery, located in the library in Barvarian Hills Plaza, is free and open to the public. All of the artwork on display is for sale. A portion of every sale benefits the gallery........

Mississippi River At West Alton, Missouri Highway 67 Project Prompts Lane Shifts........
The project that is raising the lower lanes of Highway 67 on the Missouri side of the Clark Bridge is proceeding and is slated to be completed towards the end of 2023.
The Missouri Department of Transportation is constructing two additional lanes that will be adjacent to the existing upper lanes in order to reduce that need to close lanes during times of flooding.
The construction is causing the need to shift traffic lanes to the existing upper lanes and according to MoDOT North Area Engineer Aaron Hugenberg, that is what caused traffic slow-downs last week........

Mississippi River South of the Popular Street Bridge Developers Clear First Hurdle For Riverfront Project........
Developers have gotten their first win for a development project located along the St. Louis Riverfront. The developers were granted tax incentives to develop an 80 acre site just south of the Poplar Street Bridge.
The $1.2 billion project will revitalize the riverfront and create space for commercial, residential, business and manufacturing buildings. The project is expected to add thousands of jobs to the region.
Back in August, the St. Louis Port Authority had voted to enter into a redevelopment agreement with Good Development Group. The Gateway South project is expected to take up to 10 years to complete........

Mississippi River Near Memphis, Tennessee Level Is Rising Towards 0 Feet........
On the heels of setting record low levels over the fall, the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee is making a comeback. On Tuesday, the National Weather Service said that the river would rise nine feet in nine days.
Back in late October, the Mississippi River gauge at Memphis set a record low of -10.7 feet. The Mississippi River is now forecasted to rise above zero by November 21st.
A little upriver at Cairo, Illinois, the Mississippi River was at it's lowest level since 1901. The Tennessee River Valley had been forced to release water from two dams in an effort to help stabilize commercial navigation along the river........

Mississippi River Shipping Low Mississippi River Levels Straining Exports........
As the drought conditions continue across the upper Midwest, the lack of water upstream is having a considerable effect on the flow of the Mississippi River downstream.
In some areas, the Mississippi River has been so low that barges could not transit the area, halting the flow of goods. This in turn causes logistics issues and increases shipping costs up to 300 percent, which will in turn be passed on to the consumer.
Logistics Park Dubuque, a major import/export hub along the Mississippi River has not had to stop shipping, however, day-to-day operations downstream, especially south of St. Louis have been affected........

Mississippi River Near Dorena, Missouri After Two Months, Dorena-Hickman Ferry Operating Again........
For the first time in just over two months, the Dorena-Hickman Ferry has resumed operations. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says that the ferry stopped operations on September 12th due to low water levels.
The Mississippi River had fallen to it's 8th lowest level in recorded history at the Cairo gauge. On Wednesday, the KYTC reported that the Mississippi River was at 17.15 feet at Cairo, which is high enough for the ferry to access the Missouri landing.
The Mississippi River is forecasted to continue it's rise to 19 feet by the end of the week before starting a slow fall next week. The ferry is now operating on a limited winter schedule, until an additional ferry pilot can be hired........

Mississippi River Levels Why Is The River So Low?
The level of the Mississippi River are the lowest that they have been in a decade. The river is the second largest river in the United States and supplies drinking water to approximately 20 million people. If the river levels continue to recede, drinking water for supplies could be at risk.
Portions of the U.S. have been caught in an ongoing megadrought. Alexander Loucopoulos, Partner of Sciens Water and Chair of the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative's Corporate Advisory Board says that about 1/3 of the nation's rainfall ends up in the Mississippi River, and with decreased rainfall across the Midwest, less water is entering into the river.
Some claim climate change is the main cause of the continued drought, however, some scientists have stated that in previous years, the Mississippi River has produced record water flows, meaning that this could be a short term problem........

On Saturday, November 26, 2022, the Alton Thanksgiving tradition, the 10 mile Great River Road Race, is set for it's 63rd edition. The event will begin at 10 am.
The race will start and finish adjacent to Ardent Mills in Alton, and will cover five miles out and back along the Great River Road along the Mississippi River Road.
Each year, the Alton Road Runners Club hosts the race, with the proceeds going to fund the Road Runners' series of three races in June, July and August for children, as well as the Runners of the Year Banquet........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer Mercury Marine Introduces V10 Verados........
Mercury Marine recently introduced the recreational marine industry's first V10 outboard engines, which will join the Verado family. Based on a new 5.7 liter powerhead, the outboards will be sold in 2 variants rated at 350 and 400 horsepower.
Mercury says that the outboards are 45 percent quieter than a leading competitor at cruising speed. and are capable at delivering full performance on 87 octane fuel.
Chris Drees, president of Mercury Marine says that the all new Mercury v10 Verado Outboards are just what boaters have been looking for in a 350 or 400 horsepower platform........

Illinois River Near Meredosia, Illinois Village Working To Reinforce Levees........
Officials in Meredosia, Illinois are working to limit the effects of Illinois River flooding the community by reinforcing the levees that border the river. Village President David Werries says that the village is in the process of enhancing the levee near Pearl Street along the boat dock to prevent nearby flooding.
Werries says that they have seen flooding at least once per year, if not twice. He added that they would have to add sand and sandbags, which costs thousands and thousands to do between the sand and bags.
The cost of the levee is approximately $5,000 and is being completed by village employees. Werries says that the levee is currently being built up with dirt and will have rock laid over it. They are hoping that grass will cover it by next year........

Back in September, a specially designed towboat equipped with three Suzuki DF350 outboards was used to pull sixteen sets of trio waterskiers, a total of 48 people, to a Guinness World Record during the 2022 Big Pull event in Mosinee, Wisconsin.
George "Gus" Blakely, the executive vice president, sales and service for Suzuki Marine USA said that they were pleased to be the power of choice for the record setting effort.
The record was set when 48 skiers formed 16 trios and successfully completed two lifts, establishing the new Guinness World Record for the most trio waterskiers successfully towed behind a single towboat........

Missouri River Near Washington, Missouri The Search For Missing Paraglider Continues........
The chilly temperatures have not stopped the continuing search for missing paraglider Kenny Loudermilk. On Monday, there were several searchers on the Missouri River looking for him.
Loudermilk was paragliding on October 26th when witnesses saw him crash into the Missouri River near the Highway 47 Bridge at Washington, Missouri. So far, search efforts have not turned up any trace of Loudermilk.
Kenny's daughter, Kylie said that she wanted to thank all who have helped search for her father. The family has created a GoFundMe account to help out the family........

Lake Of The Ozarks Big Thunder Planning $300 Million Development........
Big Thunder Marine recently announced their intentions to construct a new $300 million tourist destination adjacent to the Grand Glaize Bridge along the Lake of the Ozarks in Osage Beach, Missouri.
Called The Oasis at Lakeport, the development would offer entertainment year-round, 20 acres of amusement-style rides and attractions, hotels, restaurants, an amphitheater, a boardwalk and a marina.
Big Thunder intends to break ground on the family resort and entertainment development during the first quarter of 2023, with an expected opening during the summer of 2024 at the old Lakeport property that Big Thunder acquired in 2021........

Ohio River History Mussel Boats Once Ruled The Ohio River........
Anatomy of a Moonshine Town, a book by Betty Hartshorn has stirred up interest in the history of Beavertown, which was located a few miles up the Ohio River from St. Marys, West Virginia.
Apparently, there was a small fleet of mussel boats that operated out of Beavertown, owned primarily by the Beaver and Mount families. The mussel boats were equipped with 10 poles with about 40 lines hanging down, each fitted with sturdy hooks.
As the vessels drifted, the poles were dragged and the mussels would clamp shut over the hooks as they passed, never letting go. The mussels were being harvested as part of the button industry........

Mississippi River Personalities Captain Doc Hawley, NOLA Riverboat Captain, Calliope Player Passed Away........
Clarke Campbell "Doc" Hawley, who not only piloted the steamboat Natchez along the Mississippi river of 20 years, but also played the vessel's calliope, passed away on Saturday after battling esophageal cancer. Captain Hawley was 87.
Hawley worked on a succession of steamboats along 10 rivers in 17 states, and in 1982, Ward Sinclair of the Washington Post wrote that he was one of the keepers of the flame of steamboat romance, and should Mark Twain return, he would be quite happy to talk shop with Doc Hawley.
From a young age, Hawley knew that he wanted to spend his career navigating the rivers of America. He even turned down a Rhodes scholarship to the University of Oxford. He said that he wanted to stay with the boats........

His sailing buddies at Sioux Harbor, George Levesque (Ex Libris), Len Hughs (As Time Goes By), and Don Morrison (Ragtime Sails) hoisted the main halyard and kept a wary eye. Added Sunday Lower Mississippi River Levels Slight Improvements to River Levels After Rainfall........
The recent rainfall and the precipitation from the remnants of Hurricane Nicole has helped to stabilize the depth of the Lower Mississippi River. Congestion along the river remains an issue, however, as dredging operations continue.
According to Randy Chamness, the co-chair of the Lower Mississippi River Committee, some parts of Missouri have received over 2 inches of rain, and points east have seen up to an inch and a half of precipitation.
Chamless says that overall, conditions along the Lower Mississippi River have started to stabilize somewhat. He adds that the river's width and depth are maintaining in most areas instead of continuing to deteriorate........

Lake Of The Ozarks Lake Race Is No More.... LOTO Powerfest Relocates To Shady Gators........
On Wednesday, November 9th, the organizers of the Lake of the Ozarks Lake Race announced that the powerboat race that is held in June is being rebranded and relocated..
The former Lake Race will now be called the LOTO Powerfest. The event was last held at the Bagnell Dam, the race will be moved to Shady Gators and Camden on the Lake at the 7 Mile Marker.
LOTO Powerfest 2023 will be held on June 1 - 3, 2023. The event will still be sanctioned by the Offshore Powerboating Association, and is expected to draw in competitors in a traditional race format........

The organizers of the Fort Myers Boat Show recently announced that this year's show has been cancelled and has been rescheduled for January 5 - 8, 2023 due to the continuing recovery efforts from Hurricane Ian.
The Fort Myers region was especially hard hit by Hurricane Ian, but according to the Marine Industries Association of Southwest Florida and Tampa Bay, things are returning to normal than expected.
Show manager Kyle Good says that they have walked around the boat show site downtown and they feel comfortable that the city will be ready to host the boat show come January........

Added Sunday The Bermuda Triangle Remnants Of The Space Shuttle Challenger Discovered By Documentary Crew........
On Thursday, the History Channel and NASA announced that a section of the Space Shuttle Challenger has been discovered off the east coast of Florida during the filming of a news series called The Bermuda Triangle : Into Cursed Waters, which is set to debut later this month on the History Channel.
The Challenger broke up after launching on January 28th, 1986, killing all seven crew members aboard, including a teacher who was set to be the first civilian in space. Television viewers, including students across the nation, watched a live broadcast of the disaster unfolding.
Currently, NASA is deciding what, if anything will be done with the 20 foot section of the orbiter. NASA says that any actions considered will properly honor the legacy of the fallen Astronauts and their families........

Missouri River Shipping Low Water Levels Prompt Early End To Shipping Season........
A lack of rain across Missouri is causing the Missouri River navigation season to end early. Following high temperatures and drought conditions in July, Missouri Governor Mike Parsons declared a drought alert for almost half of the state.
Parsons' executive order formed the Drought Assessment Committee under the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The committee is made up of state and federal agencies and was originally focused on agriculture, however, low river levels have caused navigation issues.
Jude Kneauvean, emergency management chief for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District says that they are being forced to close navigation along the Missouri River as water levels are too low for traffic. The season usually ends on December 1st, but this year, it will end on November 28th........

Mississippi River Navigation The Missouri Drought's Effect On Commercial Navigation........
The recent rainfall has caused a rise in the Mississippi River. In Cape Girardeau, Missouri, the river topped 10 feet on Thursday, marking the first time it has been above 10 feet since September.
Despite the increase in river levels, a group of advisors in Missouri have become more concerned about the effects the drought has had on Mississippi River navigation.
On Thursday, the Missouri Drought Assessment Committee held a meeting where members voted to recommend forming a Commercial Navigation Impact team. If formed, the group would likely focus on the Mississippi River, as officials call it a crucial shipping link for the entire nation........

Tennessee River at Lenoir City, Tennessee Volunteers Find 40 Year Old Message In A Bottle........
A group of volunteers working to clean up the Tennessee River found a message in a bottle which made a trip down the river and withstood the test of time.
The glass bottle had drifted along the river for nearly 40 years and contained a letter written by an 11 year old boy. The message was sent from Strawberry Plains, Tennessee and discovered by volunteers with Keep The Tennessee River Beautiful in Lenoir City.
While it was a fun novelty to find, the volunteers said that the bottle can serve as a reminder of just how long trash can last in the river. It isn't just glass that can last in the river, plastics and other litter can take hundreds of years to decompose........

Mississippi River Near Rosedale, Mississippi Drought Exposed Fossil Of Long Extinct American Lion........
A few weeks ago, a person walking along a recently exposed sandbar in a now-low area of the Mississippi River discovered a fossil that turned out to be from an animal that went extinct about 11,000 years ago.
Wiley Prewitt reports that he was exploring the recently dried up section of the Mississippi River when he uncovered what turned out to be a partial jawbone of an American lion.
The American lion was the largest big cat in North America, and it lived as far back as 340,000 years ago. Researchers believe that the lion was about four feet tall and weighed up to 1,000 pounds, making it up to 25 percent larger than modern African lions........

Boating Statistics NMMA Released Their Annual Boating Abstract........
The National Marine Manufacturers Association recently released their 2021 U.S. Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract, which is a source of comprehensive recreational marine industry data.
Highlights of the abstract include:
○ Total recreational marine expenditures
reached a high of $56.7 billion in 2021.
Other segments covered in the Abstract include stats on powerboat, cruiser, watersport fishing boat and trailer sales trends, sailboat sales, outboard engines and total industry sales by category and state........

The Great Lakes Detroit-Area Church To Honor Sailors Lost To Shipwrecks........
At 3 pm on Sunday, a historic church in downtown Detroit, Michigan will be honoring sailors who lost their lives on The Great Lakes and Michigan Waterways. The event will be livestreamed from Mariner's Church along the Detroit River.
Approximately 6,000 shipwrecks have occurred on Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario, causing an estimated 30,000 deaths. Thursday marked the 47th anniversary of potentially the most notable wreck, the November 10, 1975 sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald.
The freighter was loaded with iron ore pellets and was headed to a Detroit steel mill when it sank to the bottom of Lake Superior during a storm some 17 miles from Whitefish Point in Michigan's Upper Peninsula........

Mississippi River Near Granite City, Illinois I-270 Lane Reopening Delayed.... Motorist Drove Onto Wet Concrete....
On Thursday afternoon, a motorist drove onto freshly poured concrete on the Interstate 270 Bridge spanning the Mississippi River near Granite City, Illinois. The incident is causing crews to have to re-do work as well as a delay in reopening the lane.
According to Joe Monroe, an official with the Illinois Department of Transportation, a motorist disobeyed traffic control warnings on the bridge and damaged several freshly poured patches.
The incident occurred at around 1 pm Thursday afternoon on the eastbound side of the bridge. A long section of one of the two eastbound lanes on the span has been closed since Monday afternoon for emergency patch work........

Boat Manufacturer MasterCraft Releases First Quarter Results........
MasterCraft Boat Holdings, Inc. has announced the financial results fort their first quarter of fiscal 2023, which ended on October 2nd, 2022. This quarter marked the eighth consecutive period-over-period record setting quarter for both net sales and earnings.
MasterCraft saw record net sales for the first quarter increase 29.7 percent to $169.5 million over the first quarter of fiscal 2022. The company also posted record net income from continuing operations at $24.6 million or $1.37 per diluted share.
Record Diluted Adjusted Net Income per share, which is a non-GAAP measure was $1.43, an increase of 90.7 percent. Record Adjusted EBITDA, which is a non-GAAP measure, rose to $35.9 million, an increase of 72.8 percent........
