Mississippi River At Memphis, Tennessee

Low Mississippi River Levels Grounding Boats........

Boats are currently being left high and dry, sitting in the mud of the Mighty Mississippi River in Memphis, Tennessee, as the river has fallen to record lows on Monday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting that the Mississippi River at Memphis will fall to -10.8 feet by November 1, which will surpass Monday's record low.

Joe Weiss, General Manager of Mud Island Marina says that they have quite a mess to deal with as the river levels drop.  Reportedly, the damage at the nearby Riverside Park Marina is so bad that it appears that a storm had blown through........

Mississippi River Levels

The Mississippi River Levels Are Reaching Record Lows........

This week, the Mississippi River levels have fallen to record low levels in some places, with the river dropping to -11.1 feet at Memphis, Tennessee.  Forecasters are predicting that the levels will continue to fall as the drought conditions continue.

The National Weather Service says that the river levels from Cairo, Illinois to Baton Rouge, Louisiana were so low that commercial navigation such as barges and riverboats were having difficulty transiting some areas of the river.

2022 was a hot and dry summer across much of the United States and the lack of rainfall affected the amount of water flowing into the Mississippi River Basin........

Fall Color Outlook

Peak Fall Colors Moving South Through Missouri........

The fall colors seem to be running a few weeks ahead of schedule this year, compared to years past, according to Fox2 reporter Angela Hutti.  She adds that the trees in her neighborhood have started to turn, with orange colors appearing.

The St. Louis region has what's called "good color" right now.  Portions of Northern Missouri and Northern Illinois, as well as the Lake of the Ozarks are nearing peak fall colors.

If you are a fall color aficionado, it would be a good time to take some time to enjoy the fall colors.  A good way to soak in the fall colors would be to take a spin along the Great River Road........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

Proposed Waterpark, Marina Project Hits A Snag........

On Tuesday, St. Louis aldermen voiced concerns that a Nashville developer is seeking incentives for the proposed marina and waterpark on St. Louis' north side prior to determining the viability of the $350 million project.

The transportation and commerce committee decided to postpone a decision over whether to recommend 15 years of tax abatement and sales tax exemption on construction materials in order to give M2 Development Partners additional time to address the aldermen's concerns.

The aldermen questioned M2 Development Partners for around 2 hours on Tuesday as to why the company is seeking tax incentives prior to conducting the safety and environmental studies........

Boating News For The Loopers

News Release From BoatUS

SPRINGFIELD, Va., Oct. 18, 2022 -- Every fall, a migration occurs along America’s East Coast, but it’s not of the avian type. Hundreds of cruisers aboard recreational boats (nicknamed “snowbirds”) load up with crew in an effort to seek out warmer climates, trekking south down the 1,100-mile Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AICW) from Norfolk, Virginia, to Key West, Florida.

Confronting them are myriad navigation hazards, including shifting shoals, lift bridge closures, construction, navigation aid repairs, and dredging projects that aren’t marked on their chartplotters or paper charts, but that are included in monthly Local Notices to Mariners put out by NOAA. Signing up to receive the free email newsletter from BoatUS, East Coast Alerts by Mel and Tom Neale, can help to keep snowbirds informed and up to date of those hazards. Local boaters along the East Coast can also quickly and easily find the relevant hazards for their boating region.

“Local Notices to Mariners (LMN) are helpful for a safe passage,” said Mel Neale. “However, it’s an uphill battle to get boaters to use them. Each monthly LMN may be more than 100 pages long. Much of the information is repetitive, and it can take a long time to weed through. Our BoatUS East Coast Alerts distills LMN relevant information down to one place, making it easy to use. Whether you’re a snowbird or local boater, we try to give you legitimate and credible information that you really need to see.”

The Neales issue East Coast Alerts monthly, with critical updates two weeks after, based on U.S. Coast Guard 1st (Maine through New York Harbor), 5th (New Jersey through North Carolina) and 7th (South Carolina through Florida) District LMN information and other resources. Each newsletter is researched by the Neales and attributed with source contact information, whether it’s a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hydrographic survey, maritime contractor, commercial operator, AICW recreational boater, local news story, or Broadcast Notice to Mariners.

“East Coast Alerts is an invaluable tool to help Intracoastal boaters plan and navigate around new hazards that likely will not show up on their charts,” said BoatUS Magazine editorial director and 15,000-mile world sailor, Bernadette Bernon. “Keep in mind, your electronic charts may be a year out of date. East Coast Alerts fills that gap.”

After leaving professional careers to cruise the East Coast and Bahamas with their two daughters, the Neales were full-time cruising liveaboards for nearly 30 years. They now cruise part-time on their home waters of Chesapeake Bay. Tom, a book author, has written extensively for Cruising World and Soundings, and now serves as top technical editor of BoatUS Magazine. Mel, a professional artist, served as cruising editor for Waterway Guide and has authored features for various boating publications. Mel and Tom have been compiling East Coast Alerts for BoatUS since 2004. Members can receive it free.

To subscribe to the BoatUS East Coast Alerts email newsletter, go to BoatUS.com/ECA

Mississippi River At Memphis, Tennessee

The Mississippi River Is At It's Lowest Level Ever At Memphis........

According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee is at it's lowest level ever.  As of Monday, the river stage is at -10.75 feet.  The previous low river level record was -10.70 feet, which was set back in 1988.

The negative river level means that the river is below the agreed-upon zero level, not that the river is empty or below ground.  The river stage is the water level above some arbitrary point, typically with zero being near the river bed.

A river's stage at a point, or gauge reading, is not an absolute measurement of the depth of the water in the channel, so when the river gauge reads zero or negative numbers, it doesn't mean that the river has gone dry........

Missouri River Basin

Drought Continues ........

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, precipitation during September in the Missouri River Basin was once again below average, with a total amount of runoff into the basin of 0.6 million acre-feet, which is 47 percent of average.

John Remus, chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that runoff into the basin was below average during September and is expected to remain low for the remainder of the year.

Remus adds that the releases from the Gavins Point Dam will continue to be set to maintain a service level of 500 cubic feet per second above the minimum service level........

       River History....

October 18, 1847 in River History........

Boatmen’s Bank, the oldest bank west of the Mississippi River, was established on this day in 1847.

The founder , George Knight Budd, arrived in St. Louis by the river aboard a steamer in 1835. After seeing the thriving commerce on Mississippi riverfront, he decided to settle in St. Louis !

In 1850 the river was the source of a disaster that spared the bank. Not a flood ! A fire that aboard a steamer on the St. Louis riverfront started a blaze that destroyed much of the city. The fire took more than 400 buildings and 23 steamers, but it spared the Boatmen's building ! It was left standing in the middle of the ashes of the structures around it.

Lower Mississippi River

Low River Levels Disrupting Industry........

The already low water levels along the Lower Mississippi River are forecasted to drop even further in the coming weeks, reducing the region's economic activity and possibly affecting jobs within the state of Mississippi.

The Mississippi River at Vicksburg, Mississippi, the river level is approaching it's lowest level since 2012.  The National Weather Service reports that as of Thursday, the river was at 4.3 feet, and was projected to fall below three feet by Tuesday.

According to Mary Pope, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, Mississippi, the latest forecast has the Mississippi River falling to 2 feet by November 8th, and it could go lower than that........

Lower Mississippi River

Corps Beginning "Sill Construction" To Block Salt Water Intrusion........

The extremely low water levels within the Lower Mississippi River, combined with a slow flow rate, is allowing salt water from the Gulf of Mexico to creep up into the Mississippi River, threatening fresh water intakes.

While there is always salt water around the mouth of the river, it is currently moving upstream in the shape of a wedge.  To fight the salt water intrusion, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and their dredging contractor, Weeks Marine, will construct a sill on the riverbed.

The sill will be constructed at Mile Marker 63.8 above the Head of Passes, just upstream of Myrtle Grove, Louisiana.  The Corps will be monitoring the salinity levels to determine how high the sill will need to be.

The U.S. Coast Guard has restricted navigation to one-way traffic in the vicinity of the sill and the channel has been reduced to 500 feet wide, favoring the left descending bank........

Low River Levels Allow Foot Access To Tower Rock........

Tower Rock is usually an island in the middle of the Mississippi River south of St. Louis however, the continuing drought conditions have made the island accessible by foot.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says that Tower Rock is able to be accessed on foot when the river level is below 1.5 feet on the Chester, Illinois River Gauge... The gauge was reading around zero on Thursday, and there is no signs of significant recovery in the near future.

According to the US Drought Monitor, over 55 percent of the contiguous United States is in drought conditions, which is the largest area since April.  Over 133 million people live within the drought-stricken areas, which is the largest population affected since 2016........

Mississippi River In Desoto County, Mississippi

Low Water Mark/Car Exposed........

The Mississippi River levels have gotten so low in some places that it is revealing long-held secrets.  In DeSoto County, just south of Memphis, two cars have been revealed by the falling water levels.

The vehicles were located in an area of the river where there is a sharp turn in the road along the Mississippi River.  Local resident Nancy Stanford theorizes that someone ran off the road, was able to get out, but couldn't get the vehicle out of the river.

Locals say that the frame of what appears to be an old Monte Carlo is a low water mark last seen in 1988.  Reportedly, officials attempted to remove the car at that time but was unable to.  This is only the second time the car has been visible and it remains in the same spot in the river........

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2008.... was sent in by Capt'n Gary Fitzmire, who hailed out of Lake Center Marina in a 2008 Mastercraft X-2

Bill,

We made our final run of the season last weekend. Our son Michael, undeterred by the cold water, tried some new tricks before hanging up his wakeboard for the winter. It was a very short season, but it ended with some spectacular weather and wonderful family time on the river.

Thanks for a great website,

Environmental Organizations and the City of Alton Plan Fall Tree Planting
through Trees Forever Program

ALTON, IL -- The City of Alton, Three Rivers Project of Sierra Club Illinois, and National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC) are calling for volunteers to help plant trees in many different Alton parks throughout autumn, the first of which will be at the Alton Marina and along Broadway Street, in downtown Alton on Monday, October 17. Building on a successful spring tree planting project, Alton is planting trees across the city thanks to a Recover, Replant, Restore! (RRR) grant secured by NGRREC from Trees Forever and the Swarovski Waterschool, along with private foundation funding obtained by the Three Rivers Project. The City of Alton secured additional support for this project from Ameren Illinois’ “Right Tree Right Place” program. To volunteer at the first tree planting session, RSVP at

Low River Levels Disrupt River Shipping........

Plunging river levels along the lower Mississippi River are expected to fall even more in the coming weeks, hindering the region's economic activity and possibly threatening jobs.

The National Weather Service reports that the Mississippi River at Vicksburg, Mississippi is nearing it's lowest level since 2012.  As of Thursday, the River was at 4.3 feet and is expected to fall another three feet by Tuesday.

According to Marty Pope, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, Mississippi, the latest forecast predicts that the river will reach 2 feet at Vicksburg by November 8th and it might get lower than that........

Ohio River Levels Prompt Shift To Groundwater In The Cairo Area.........

Due to historically low levels along the Ohio River, Illinois American Water will be temporarily changing their source to "groundwater" in the Cairo region.  This change will remain in effect until further notice.

According to Mike Brown, operation superintendent for the Illinois American Water Cairo District, the water source change is necessary as well as completely safe.

Brown adds that the alternate water source was added to support reliable water service in the event of low water levels along the Ohio River.  Drinking water will remain safe to drink........

River Shipping News

Low River Conditions Continue Along The Lower Mississippi And Ohio Rivers........

Historic low water conditions continue along the inland river system, which are obstructing channels and restricting tow sizes, prompting light loading and slowing or halting river traffic.

Low water conditions have entered into the Ohio River basin, which had briefly closed at the 974 Mile Marker because of groundings just below the Olmstead Locks and the associated dredging operations.

According to figures released by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Lower Mississippi River Forecast Center on October 13th, the current river stage at Cairo is at 7.6 feet, with a forecasted low of 6 feet, compared to the low of 4.9 feet in 1988.  At Memphis, the river was 8.6 feet below the reference plane, with a forecast of 10 feet below, compared to 1988's 10.7 feet.

Many barge companies have been forced to declare "force majeure", meaning that they are no longer able to fulfill delivery dates in contracts due to events beyond their control........

A Unique Look At The Mississippi River

While Trolling The Internet....  We reeled in a very interesting photo of the Mississippi River valley between Louisiana and Mississippi.  This photo from the European Space Agency combines three radar acquisitions from the Sentinel-1 mission taken over a 12 day period in April and May.  Waterways appear black, changes in crops and land conditions are represented by bright colors.  Vessels along the Mississippi River appear in red green and blue....

Boat Manufacturers

Manufacturing Declined For The First Time Since 2020........

Last month, manufacturing across the globe decreased for the first time since June of 2020, as companies continue to deal with economic and geopolitical uncertainties as well as lingering supply chain and workforce issues.

According to Correct Craft CEO Bill Yeargin, marine manufacturers still have a significant number of orders for new boats, there are indicators that a downturn may be coming next year.

Aside from the macroeconomic concerns that everyone focuses on, Yeargin says that there are some industry-specific downturn indicators such as the year-over-year decline in sales in every boating segment and a decrease in the number of people searching for information about buying a new boat.........

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois

Take A Look At Quinsippi Island's History........

Quinsippi Island, once known as Towhead Island, separates Quincy Bay from the Mississippi River.  The island was used for training during the War of 1812.  Later, logs floated down the river to the sawmills located on the east side of the bay.  During Winter months, ice was harvested from the bay.  During the 1960s, the island was given to the City of Quincy and is now a 130 acre park managed by the Quincy Park District.

During the l860s, the island was owned by the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad and used as part of their bridge system to cross the river.  Completed in 1868, the first Quincy-area rail bridge spanning the Mississippi River was a single-lane bridge which traveled to the island, then across the Lower Spring Bay Bridge, where it looped around to the station and returned on the Upper Swing Bay Bridge.

In 1899, a new bridge with wagon lanes was constructed.  This span was a drawbridge  which allowed barges to pass, however, it caused significant delays for rail traffic..  A third bridge was built in 1960 that was no longer a drawbridge and bypassed the island.  The railroad then donated the island, the steam locomotive 3007 and the Upper Bay Bridge to the city.......

Ohio River Seeing Closures As Mississippi Bottleneck Improves.........

While one bottleneck along the Mississippi River near Stack Island has been eliminated, several other problem areas are cropping up for river shipping interests.

According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee has fallen two feet since Saturday, and is forecasted to fall another two feet by October 25th.  This would be a tie for the third lowest river level on record.

The Ohio River, which contributes up to 60 percent of the Lower Mississippi River's water volume, is now seeing closures at multiple locations because of groundings and dredging operations.........

Missouri River

Tows Navigate Shallow Waters As Mighty Mo. Falls........

While the dry conditions allow farmers to work each day to harvest their crops, the dry conditions are also hindering efforts to export that grain as water levels within the Mississippi River Watershed continue to fall.

Mark Fuchs, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service in St. Louis says that currently, the Missouri River is falling, and there isn't much rain forecasted that would bring it back up.

Currently, the Missouri River levels are low enough that AgriServices of Brunswick is being forced to load less grain onto their transport barges in order to allow them to still navigate the shallower channels........

Park Board Commits To Keeping Marina Open........

On Wednesday, the Quincy Park Board unanimously approved a resolution that commits the Quincy Park District to operating the Art Keller Marina through the 2025 boating season.

The previous resolution had only extended the Art Keller Marina's operation through 2023.  During the 2022 season, the slips at the marina were less than half occupied, causing a sizable operating deficit that had to be covered via other Park DIstrict funds.

The recent discussions with boaters groups and efforts to bolster the declining slip rentals have proven to be enough to allow the Board to extend their commitment to working with these groups.........

Ribbon Cutting Officially Opens Aerie's Alpine Coaster........

After the announcement that Aerie's Winery and Resort in Grafton was installing the first-ever alpine coaster in Illinois, anticipation has been growing over what the experience would be like.

Now, following a soft opening on September 29th, there was a ribbon cutting ceremony held on Tuesday, October 11th to officially open the attraction.  Officials and media were on hand to commemorate the event.

Grafton Mayor Mike Morrow says that he had seen alpine coaster while he was in Europe, but Aerie's example is better.  Cory Jobe, President and CEO of the Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau was on hand and was thrilled for Jeff and Sandy Lorton, owners of Aerie's Winery.

Jobe said that they wanted to congratulate the Lortons for creating another great attraction that will draw in tourists from the Midwest and beyond to Grafton and the Great River Road........

Mississippi River Personalities

River Pilot Retiring After More Than 40 Years On The River........

Captain Reed Vonder Haar has spent over 40 years on the Mississippi River and it's tributaries before retiring this year.  In all, Vonder Haar spent 46 years on the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers before retiring this summer.

Captain Vonder Haar started as a deck hand a few years out of high school and rapidly worked his way up through the ranks, rising from deckhand to second hand, to first mate and then steersman.  By 1980, he was piloting towboats.

He picked up that each time he wanted to quit, his employers tended to promote him until he had finally landed the top job of Captain.  Vonder Haar says that he had worked for more companies than he could remember, with the latest being Marquette Transportation, which was his base for the past 19 years........

Mississippi River Shipping

Low River Levels Could Affect Fall Harvest........

Being October, farmers are working to harvest their crops, but with the historically low river levels, getting those crops to river ports for shipment has become a problem.  A professor from SIU says that the barge shipping issues will shift traffic to trucks and trains.

Gregory DeYong, an associate professor of operations management at SIU says that the timing of the drought conditions couldn't be any worse in terms of being in the middle of the harvest season.  He adds that there may be problems at the grain elevators if the drought continues.  He added that at some point, the elevators will have to quit taking grain.

The United States Department of Agriculture reports that during the first week of October, barged grain movements were 44 percent higher than the previous week, but 36 percent less that during the same time last year.  Mark Borgmann, manager of MFA Agri Services says that fewer bushels are being hauled, increasing costs for businesses and farmers........

Mississippi River Near Wittenburg, Missouri

Low Water Allows Visitors To Walk To Tower Rock........

Low water levels along the Mississippi River brought out several people to the Grand Tower Natural Area near Wittenburg, Missouri on Monday.  River levels below 1.5 feet on the Mississippi River gauge means that people are able to walk out to Tower Rock.

Thanks to the Columbus Day holiday. people were able to bring their kids and grandkids out to the Mississippi River for a potential once-in-a-lifetime experience.

People of all ages and even some dogs made the trek to Tower Rock to explore.  Currently, the water level at Tower Rock is not quite a foot deep and is expected to remain steady over the next several days........

Mississippi River Health

Report:  Nitrates "Pouring" Into U.S. Waterways........

According to a recent study conducted by an environmental policy and advocacy group, nitrate compounds were the main toxic substances released into U.S. waterways in 2020, including the Mississippi River.

Industry, mainly petroleum refineries and meat and poultry processing facilities discharged over 175 million pounds of nitrates in 2020, making up 91 percent of all toxic chemicals released by weight in the U.S., according to the report's analysis of federal data.

These findings are particularly relevant to the Mississippi River Basin, which drains a 31 state watershed and carries nitrates and other chemicals into the Gulf of Mexico.  The nitrates encourage the growth of algal blooms that contribute to the Gulf's hypoxic "dead zone" where oxygen-depleted waters kill off marine wildlife.........

Mississippi River At Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Treasure Hunter Discovers Part Of A Sunken Ferry.......

The level of the Mississippi River near Baton Rouge, Louisiana is at it's lowest since 1992 and that has treasure hunters combing over the lower levee looking for odds and ends that have washed down river.

Last month, Patrick Ford was walking along the a hard packed mud flat when he spotted what he believed to be a part of a retaining wall.  He walked on, searching for something that he could show off to his friends.

Last week, Ford returned to the area, and that bit of wood had turned into a part of a boat.  It turns out that Ford had found a shipwreck from the early 20th century.  According to Louisiana State Archaeologist Chip McGimsley, it is likely that Ford has stumbled upon the wreck of an early Baton Rouge ferry, the S.S. Brookhill, which sank on September 29, 1915........

The Gulf Of Mexico

Boaters Rescued After Fighting Off Shark Attacks........

On Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued the crew of a sunken fishing boat fighting off shark attacks in the Gulf of Mexico.  All three crewmembers were taken from the water and rushed to the hospital.  Two of the three fishermen had suffered shark bites to their hands, with one showing signs of hypothermia.

The rescue occurred some 25 miles off the coast near Empire, Louisiana as the Coast Guard were searching for a fishing boat missing late Saturday evening.  Empire is located approximately 55 miles southeast of New Orleans.

The angler's 24 foot center console boat had sunk around 10 am Saturday, leaving the men in the water for more than a day.  The crew were spotted by a Coast Guard helicopter on Sunday, and a rescue boat arrived on scene and witnessed two boaters fighting off the sharks.  Rescuers pulled the two men before more injuries could occur, and the third was hoisted from the water by the helicopter.

The Coast Guard said that if the family member hadn't contacted the Coast Guard and if the three boaters had not work life jackets, this incident could have had a very different outcome........
