Mississippi River Journeys Get Out On The River With A Real Like Huck Finn.......
John Ruskey has been constructing canoes and guiding paddling trips along the Mississippi River Delta for three decades. He says that it all began after graduating high school in 1982.
Ruskey and a friend built a 12 by 24 foot raft and began in Minnesota on their five month journey down the Mississippi River. They ended up crashing that raft into an island near Clarksdale.
He says that he didn't settle down in Mississippi at that point, but never got the sand, mud and river out of his system. In 1991, he returned to the region and started canoeing and exploring the Mississippi River.
In 1998, Ruskey formed the Quapaw Canoe Company, which operates tours of the Mississippi River from outposts in Clarksdale and Vicksburg, Mississippi, as well as Helena, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee........

Lake Michigan At Green Bay, Wisconsin Dozens Rescued After Ice Broke Free From Shoreline.......
On Saturday, rescue workers saved 27 people who became stranded on a large piece of ice floating off the shore of Point Comfort in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
The Brown County Sheriff's Office reports that barge traffic seems to have weakened the ice, causing it to break free of the shoreline.
Ice fisherman Shane Nelson was caught on the ice floe when it broke free. He says that a loud noise like a gunshot caught their attention.
Nelson said that he came out of his shanty to see what was going on and people were yelling that they were drifting from shore........

Mississippi River In The Riverbend It's Time To See The Wintering Bald Eagles........
As the temperatures plummet in the areas north of St. Louis, and the rivers freeze over, the Bald Eagles head for the Riverbend region for the winter.
They can be seen near areas near open water and especially near the river's locks and dams, perched in the nearby trees or fishing off of ice floes on the water.
Pamela Selbert recently wrote a column for the St. Louis Post Dispatch detailing some of the best places to see Bald Eagles, as well as some of the sights along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers in the Riverbend region........

Mississippi River Infrastructure "Invisible" Infrastructure Crucial To Mississippi River........
The current project to deepen the Mississippi River Ship Channel to 50 feet has brought to light the crucial nature of transportation infrastructure, especially what is referred to as "invisible" infrastructure.
Defining the term invisible infrastructure is not quite as simple as one would think. At times, some so-called invisible infrastructure is plainly visible, however, it is often overlooked until it breaks down.
Invisible infrastructure includes items such as air gap sensors, navigation aids and technology, current meters, fog sensors, pipelines and geodetic datums.
The Mississippi River Ship Channel Deepening project has encountered some delays related to pipelines running under the river. Survey equipment is not able to identify where the pipelines are located at under the hard sediment........

Garmin Ltd. recently announced that they had acquired Vesper Marine, which is a privately-held provider of AIS, VHF and vessel monitoring solutions for the marine industry.
The acquisition of Vesper Marine is expected to bolster Garmin's industry leading line of marine products and technology intended to provide enhanced situational awareness and peace of mind for boaters.

Tennessee River Near Paducah, Kentucky Barges Rotate Truss For Smithland Bridge Project........
Construction work on the steel superstructure for a new bridge that will cross the Cumberland River at Smithland, Kentucky is approximately halfway complete, and has just reached a major milestone.
On December 29, 2021, crews aboard two vessels worked together to move barges supporting each end of the span out into the Tennessee River so that it could be rotated before moving it back into position at the Paducah-McCracken Riverport Authority.
When completed, the steel truss will be 700 feet long and 48 feet wide. The span already weighs in at 3.2 million pounds. The span will need to be pushed out into the river and rotated five more times before it will be completed in February........

Illinois River At Kampsville, Illinois Icy Conditions Shut Down Kampsville Ferry........
The Illinois Department of Transportation recently announced that they have temporarily shut down the Kampsville Ferry due to ice floes along the Illinois River.
IDOT officials say that the closure will remain in effect until the Illinois River clears enough to allow the ferry to consistently make safe crossings.
IDOT recommends using the Joe Page Bridge at Hardin or the Brussels Ferry north of Grafton to access Calhoun County during the closure........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Saturday's Eagle Ice Festival Kicks Off Riverbend Eagle Season........
Eagle Season is beginning in the Riverbend region, and to kick the season off, the Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau will be hosting the annual Alton Audubon Eagle Festival on Saturday.
The majestic Bald Eagles that have inspired generations of Americans will be able to be seen in many areas along the Mississippi River, especially along the bluffs adjacent to the Great River Road.
According to Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau President Cory Jobe, there will be plenty of activities from 2 to 6 pm near the Alton Visitors Center, including ax throwing, ice carving, s'mores and much more........

Mississippi River At Bettendorf, Iowa A Look Back At How The Old & New I-74 Bridges Came To Be........
Prior to 1935, the only way to cross the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities region were aboard a ferry or over the Government Bridge between Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois.
In 1907, William P. Bettendorf, founder of the City of Bettendorf and Bettendorf Co. started working to build the Iowa-Illinois Memorial Bridge. This was only 1 year after the General Bridge Act of 1906 made it illegal for private citizens to build bridges as business ventures.
Bettendorf, however, received official permission for the venture from Congress through the Bettendorf Bridge Bill. Now, the Moline and Bettendorf Bridge Co. was ready to proceed with the bridge project.
Unfortunately, Bettendorf passed away in 1910, putting the kibosh on any momentum the project had. The Moline and Bettendorf Bridge Co. could not raise enough capital to start construction, and it wasn't until 1927 that increases in population and traffic brought the idea of a bridge back to the minds of Quad Cities officials........

Upcoming Events January 18, 2022 Mississippi River Art Watershed Cairns Featured During Neighborhood Nights Event........
The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center will once again host their Neighborhood Nights events. This year's inaugural event will feature the work of artists Libby Reuter and Joshua Rowan: Watershed Cairns: Water Marked With Art Project.
Reuter says that Cairns are typically made by stacking rocks found at the site to mark a trail or as a memorial. She adds that the cairns are constructed using repurposed bowls, vases and lamp parts. Reuter builds the cairns, Rowan photographs them.
Reuter states that the cairns are intended to amplify the relationship between humans, land and water........

Mississippi River At West Alton, Missouri Multiple Boats Destroyed By Fire in Extreme Cold........
Officials report that six boats are a total loss following a fire that tore through the Harbor Point Yacht Club in West Alton, Missouri. Firefighters from the Spanish Lake Fire Protection District were called out about 9 PM Wednesday evening. Upon arriving, they spotted sever docked boat engulfed in flames.
The Rivers Point Fire Protection District reports that crews battles windy conditions and extreme cold temperatures throughout the night. Firefighters had to use approximately 100 gallons of fire-suppressing foam to extinguish the blaze.
Officials report that in addition to the six boat losses, the dock structure and other boats sustained damages. No injuries were reported. Rivers Pointe Fire Chief Rick Pender says that the cause of the fire is still under investigation........

Boat Sales Boat Registrations Up Slightly During November........
For the better part of 2021. boatbuilders had been caught between a rock and a hard place as they have had to deal with supply chain issues while meeting unprecedented demand.
Over the past several months, the supply and demand imbalance has been reflected in the numbers as a steady decline in sales. Logically, one would expect to see November ending as the seventh consecutive month of sales decreases.
According to preliminary data from Statistical Surveys, boat registrations were slightly up on a month to month basis. Total industry registrations rose 0.1 percent, while the main powerboat segments saw a 2.4 percent increase compared to November 2020........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois Crews Working On Flood Basin Project........
On Wednesday, crews from Maple Grove, Minnesota-based Meyer Contracting were busy clearing trees and brush from the flood basin at the corner of Illinois 143 and the Cpl. Chris Belchik Memorial Expressway near Alton.
This project is part of a larger project, the $6.5 million Mel Price Flood Control Reaching 1 project, which involves the construction of relief wells for the Wood River Levee DIstrict.
The relief wells are intended to correct underseepage issues that were identified several years ago. The project is expected to be completed by the middle of August........

Water Safety MSHP Discusses Cold Weather Water Safety........
With the arrival of winter and chilly temperatures in the air, the water temperatures are falling as well. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding the public to be careful and remain alert on the water.
The human body loses heat around 25 times faster in the water than in the air. Lifejacket usage becomes critical this time of year, as hypothermia can quickly reduce the body's ability to process or perform even the simplest tasks.
Extreme care should be taken when venturing out onto the ice, as many ice victims start out as would-be rescuers. Instead of trying to rescue someone who has fallen through the ice, the MSHP advises calling emergency responders first........

Mississippi River At New Orleans, Louisiana Crews Battled Wharf Fire Along NOLA Waterfront........
Monday night, The New Orleans Fire Department was called out to the Mississippi River at Algiers for a report of a wharf fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters said that a sizable portion of the wharf was already engulfed in flames. Fire hoses were run across the levee in an effort to reach the rapidly spreading fire. Access was limited by marsh and trees.
Around 9 pm, the Port of New Orleans' Fireboat General Kelley was called out to help fight the blaze from the river side of the wharf. The fire was extinguished by 10:20 pm........

Mississippi River At Memphis, Tennessee I-40 Bridge Closing For Inspections........
The Arkansas Department of Transportation has announced that on Wednesday, they would be temporarily closing lanes down along the Interstate 40 Bridge to allow crews to perform routine inspections.
Back in early May, the Interstate 40 Bridge was closed down after inspectors found a crack in one of two 900 foot steel beams crucial to the span's structural integrity.
Tennessee transportation officials say that the Interstate 40 Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee carries about 50,000 vehicles daily, with approximately 25 percent of those vehicles being commercial trucks........

Mississippi River Near St. Louis, Missouri A Look Back At Steamboats In St. Louis........
On August 2, 1817, the steamboat Zebulon Pike arrived at the foot of Market Street in St, Louis following a 30 day trip from Louisville, Kentucky. It was the first powered boat to reach St. Louis.
There isn't much known about the Zebulon Pike other than it's sluggishness. It was modeled after Robert Fulton's first bulky, deep-draft steamers that worked in New York Harbor. The Mississippi River required a different kind of boat.
As steamboat technology progressed, speed along the river increased. These advances also increased the risk of disaster, as the steamboats and engines were built for speed as opposed to safety.
On the night of January 3, 1844, the Shepherdess hit a snag near Cahokia Bend, about three miles south of the St. Louis landing. Within 2 minutes, water reached the main deck. It sank to it's top deck near Carondelet. Up 70 people perished in the icy river........

Mississippi River Near Grafton, Illinois Work Begins On Mississippi River Habitat Restoration Project........
Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District awarded a $7.2 million contract to Luhr Brothers of Columbia, Illinois for the construction of a Mississippi River habitat restoration program.
The project is located in Pool 26 between Upper Mississippi River Mile Markers 207.5 and 211.5. Work on the project will include a notched river training structure between Piasa and Eagle's Nest Islands and four island rock rings.
Work on the project began on December 1 and the first phase of construction is slated to last up to eight weeks, dependant upon the weather........

Mississippi River In The Riverbend Bald Eagle Watching Season Has Arrived........
Bald Eagles have begun arriving in the Riverbend region and Bald Eagle Days has started this week at Pere Marquette State Park on Grafton, Illinois.
The official kick off of Eagle Season is set for Saturday, January 8. Cory Jobe, President and CEO of the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau says that this year's Eagle Fest will be bigger and better than ever before.
Jobe adds that the bald eagle festival will be expanded to include adult-focused afternoon activities and they have added the National Great Rivers Museum as a co-sponsor........

Missouri River Near Mandaree, North Dakota Oil Field Truck Stranded in Frozen Lake Sakakawea........
On Sunday, crews were working to recover a semitractor-trailer from the Skunk Bay inlet of Lake Sakakawea after the truck drove onto the frozen body of water and broke through the ice.
Reportedly, the driver got lost on Saturday evening, and thought that the inlet, which was covered in snow, was a field and would be a safe place to turn around. Lake Sakakawea is a reservoir along the Missouri River.
The incident occurred on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation east of Mandaree, North Dakota in the heart of the Bakken oil fields. It is not certain if the truck was hauling any petroleum products, and if so, if any leaked into the lake........

Meramec River Near Valley Park, Missouri Superfund Money Set For Valley Park Site, Not Washington Or New Haven........
Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the allocation of $1 billion to pay for the clean up of 49 federal Superfund sites, which are locations that require long-term cleanup of pollution and hazardous material contamination.
Two Superfund sites in Franklin County, Missouri, one in Washington and the other in New Haven, were not among the 49 sites chosen by the EPA> A site along the Meramec River in Valley Park was on the list.
The soil at a site in Valley Park, Missouri near Fenton, is contaminated with Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and Trichloroethylene (TCE), which has contaminated groundwater as well as the Meramec River.......

Meramec River Near Eureka, Missouri Eureka Has Received Land Donation Adjacent To The Meramec River........
The City of Eureka, Missouri recently received the largest land donation in it's history. The land is adjacent to the Meramec River and will be used as a park.
Ruprecht Building Materials Co. negotiated an agreement with the City of Eureka to donate over 201 acres. The land, which appraised at $2.6 million, is in the flood plain south of the Meramec River.
The land will be restricted for use as a park. The City of Eureka has started the process of assessing the best uses for the land, however, it will be a park with nature trails, bike trails, lake activities at three on-site lakes and potential access to the Meramec River........

Ohio River At Belpre, Ohio Two Barges Strike A Bridge Along The Ohio River........
The U.S. Coast Guard reports that on Saturday morning, there was a bridge allision involving two barges that broke free near Ohio River Mile Marker 184 at Belpre, Ohio.
The Coast Guard uses the term allision to refer to a moving object striking a stationary object on waterways. This is the second Ohio River barge incident this week.
One of the barges is reported to have sustained damage. There are no known injuries reported, and foul play has not been indicated in the incident........

The Great Loop Boater Completed 6,000 mile Great Loop Aboard A Pontoon Boat........
Tulsa, Oklahoma doctor and avid boater Scott Meyers recently completed the 6,000 mile trip around the Eastern United States known as The Great Loop aboard a Tritoon pontoon boat.
Meyers says that it was fun to see people's reactions as he traveled from town to town. He adds that the tritoon is more of a lake boat, that it really isn't designed for ocean-going.

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri Hannibal Parks Dept Planning To Rent Dredge........
In the new year, a considerable amount of work is slated to take place along the Hannibal, Missouri riverfront. One of the larger projects will be taking place along the southern portion of the city's riverfront near the new marina.
Andy Dorian, Hannibal's director of central services says that they are planning to dredge in the new year. He added that they are working on finalizing a dredging permit.
There has been a considerable amount of discussion surrounding the Hannibal parks department purchasing a dredge for removing silt build up. Dorian says that they will be renting the dredge they are considering purchasing........

Missouri River At Atchison County, Missouri Levee Rehab Project Involves Realignment........
Considering the damage done the the lower Missouri River levees in Northwestern Missouri, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has decided that the most cost-effective way to make repairs is to realign the levee.
Missouri River levee L-536, located northwest of St. Joseph, Missouri, was overtopped and breached in five different places when a bomb cyclone hit the Midwest in March 2019.
A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers cost analysis determined that, due to the extensive amount of damage and scour holes at the breach locations, it would be more efficient and more cost effective to realign the southern portion of Levee L-536, rather than repair it in place........

Tennessee River Near Grand Rivers, Kentucky Feds End Controversial Asian Carp Harvest Method........
Following a request by a Lyon County, Kentucky official, researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey will not be returning to Kentucky Lake to perform a seasonal tracking and harvest of Asian carp referred to a the "modified unified method".
This method uses teams of boaters using lights, sounds and channels made of small nets to herd Asian carp into a large net placed across the mouth of a bay.
Lyon County Judge-Executive Wade White says that the modified unified method is less effective than methods already being used by commercial fisherman, and it is considerably more expensive.........

Mississippi River At New Orleans, Louisiana A Look Back: Harry Houdini Escaped Handcuffs, Chains In The Mississippi River........
On November 17, 1907, Illusionist and stunt performer Harry Houdini boarded the steamboat J.S. along the Mississippi River at New Orleans. His hands were shackled behind his back with handcuffs and a heavy chain. His feet were shackled as well.
A crowd of thousands watched as Houdini plunged into the muddy Mississippi River, disappearing below the surface. The spectators fell silent as the seconds ticked by, and after 30 seconds, Houdini surfaced, threw his bindings onto the steamboat's main deck and swam to a small floating platform that was moored to the wharf.
In an interview with a newspaper, Houdini said that the Mississippi River was awful, the worst he had ever been in. He added it was cold and dark, and the deeper he went, the darker and colder it got. He also expressed his fear of the river, saying that he had written his will the night before the escape attempt........
