Missouri Boating Legislation Proposed Lifejacket Law Would Increase Age To 12 For Boating and Swimming........
A recently proposed law would require all children under the age of 12 to wear a life jacket while they are on board a boat as well as when they are swimming. Senator Lauren Arthur (D-Kansas City) pre-filed SB913 for the 2022 session.
The proposed legislation would raise the age requirement for children wearing a personal floating device while aboard a boat. It would also require kids under the age of 12 to wear a life jacket while swimming in water deeper than three feet in any navigable waterway in Missouri unless supervised by a lifeguard. The proposed law would not apply to private pools.
Current Missouri law requires children under the age of seven to wear a personal floating device while aboard a watercraft and there are no requirements for wearing a life jacket while swimming.........

Officials behind the efforts to launch the Innovative Container on Vessel service in the Midwest recently announced that the Hawtex Development Corporation will be the lead developer for the new COV port facility in Jefferson County.
The COV facility will be developed in collaboration with Fred Weber/Riverview Commerce Park LLC and will integrate a 300+ acre parcel owned by the Doe Run Company.
This new port facility will be a crucial link along the all-new, all water north-south trade route linking the Midwest and the St. Louis region to the Lower Mississippi River Valley and points beyond........

Mississippi River Near Memphis, Tennessee Do The Bluffs Protect Memphis From Tornadoes?
Recently, a common myth surfaced on social media questioning whether the Mississippi River bluffs in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee provide protection against tornadoes.
Phil Baker, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in Memphis said that the bluffs do not offer protection from tornadoes. He adds that Memphis has just been lucky.
Baker says that tornadoes form through very deep layers of the atmosphere, up to 15,000 feet, meaning the slight elevation of the downtown Memphis provides no storm protection at all........

Sternwheeler News From Long Beach, California The Newport Princess Sank Off The Coast Of Long Beach........
The Newport Princess, a Mississippi River style sternwheeler sank about a mile off the coast of Long Beach, California. The 61.5 foot long vessel toured Newport Harbor.
The vessel had spent the majority of 2021 moored adjacent to the oil platform island White, had no one aboard when the vessel sank. U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Aidan Coomey says that the vessel holds 750 gallons of fuel, but there was less than 10 gallons aboard when it sank.
As of Wednesday, the Newport Princess remained partially submerged while arrangements were being made to recover the vessel and demolish it. The U.S. Coast Guard and the Long Beach Marine Safety Bureau are investigating the cause of the sinking........

Being in a Parade of boats is up there with the experience of Totality. Definitely a top 10 in life. The Photo with multiple boats is the staging area. Sizing up the competition. To give you an idea of perspective, the tallest boat on the right a 60’ yacht. We had a sleigh ride in Florida along with Santa, The Abominable Snow Monster, Rudolph leading the way. This is an event that no pictures can do it justice. The beauty of the event is unbelievable. Crowds on shore where cheering Santa with his lit up reigns. To top it off a fireworks show with the ships horns echoing through the city.

Added Sunday Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois Tourism Bureau Excited About Alpine Coaster........
According to Cory Jobe, President and CEO of the Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau, the news of a new attraction coming to Grafton is a good thing for the entire region. The attraction is an Alpine Coaster that will be installed at Aerie's Resort.
Jobe says that the Alpine Coaster is the first attraction of it's kind in Illinois. While an Alpine Coaster is similar to a roller coaster, it only has a 2 seat sled which runs down a 3,000 foot track through the woods and around the limestone landscapes on the hill........

Added Sunday Upper Missouri River Management Releases From The Gavins Point Dam Reduced To Winter Rates........
On November 23, 2021, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started reducing the releases from the Gavins Point Dam to the winter release rate of 12,000 cubic feet per second. The releases arrived at that point on December 8th.
John Remus, Chief of the Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that thye will be closely monitoring the ice conditions along the Missouri River, between the Missouri River reservoirs and points downstream. Flow rates will be adjusted as necessary to reduce the effects of river ice formations.
During November, the runoff in the Upper Missouri RIver Basin above Sioux City, Iowa was 700,000 acre-feet, which is about 66 percent of average. The total runoff for the year is forecasted to be 58 percent of average, or 15.0 million acre-feet. The average runoff is 25.8 MAF........

Shortly before 8:30pm on December 10th, 35 year old Douglas Lewis witnessed a very rare site, a huge tornado crossing the Mississippi River mere yards away from his towboat.

Lewis assembled a video of the tornado that runs from the time they received a report of a tornado emergency through the tornado passing over the tow, killing the engines and blowing out the engine room doors........

Boat Show News STL Boat Show Rescheduled For Next Year........
Officials have announced that the Progressive Insurance St. Louis Boat & Sportshow that was slated to be held February 3 - 6, 2022 has been postponed another year due to the current needs and economics of the region, including supply chain interruptions, historically low inventories and date availability at the America's Center.
Show Manager Darren Envall says that the industry is seeing extraordinary levels of consumer interest in boating amid product scarcity. After several months of study and conversations with partners and exhibitors, officials made the decision to postpone the show until February 2023.
Officials say that until then, attendees should check out discoverboating.com for the latest in boats, gear, boating lifestyles and follow @discoverboating on social media........

Mississippi River Near Herculaneum, Missouri Container Port Facility To Be Constructed In Jefferson County........
On Friday, key stakeholders in a new port facility, including officials from the Jefferson County Port Authority, APM Terminals and American Patriot Holdings, met to discuss the proposed Container-on-Vessel facility set to be built in Herculaneum, Missouri.
The state-of-the-art intermodal container facility would be located at Fred Weber's Riverview Commerce Park and the adjacent 300 acre parcel owned by Doe Run.
The facility will serve the Midwest region for both the import and export of containerized cargo. Herculaneum was chosen since it is one of the most northern locations along the Mississippi unencumbered by locks and dams........

Boating Writers International recently announced that they will be accepting applications for their annual BWI/Active Interest Media Boating Scholarship until January 15.
The $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student that demonstrates a passion for boating media and has definite plans for a career in writing, photography and broadcast film or art.
AIM Marine Group president Gary DeSanctis says that they are pleased to be sponsoring the annual BWI scholarship for those interested in getting into boating media as their chosen profession........

Coldwater Creek In St. Louis County, Missouri Coldwater Creek Cleanup Completion Pushed To 2038........
Coldwater Creek, a tributary of the Missouri River winds it's way through North St. Louis County, from near St. Louis Lambert International Airport to the Missouri River. IN 1806, Captain William Clark noted the confluence in journals as a final stop of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Starting in the 1950s, the spring-fed creek became drainage to residential and industrial growth. Waste products from the Manhattan Project had been stored at a few sites near the creek north of the airport, and contaminants had found their way into the Coldwater Creek floodplain.
Areas in the Coldwater Creek Floodplain are now part of the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program, which is working to clean up the radiation contaminated soil. Crews are making progress, but the project's completion has been pushed back to 2038........

Mississippi River Infrastructure Congress Pushing Corps To Prioritize Funding For Projects.........
A bipartisan group of Senators and Representatives recently penned a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers calling on them to prioritize funding for construction of the Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program along the Upper Mississippi River System.
Members of Congress that signed the letter include Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO), Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill), Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Representatives Cheri Bustos (D-Ill-17) and Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa-01). An additional 8 senators and 39 representatives signed on as well.
The recently signed Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act provides $2.5 billion in funding for the Inland Waterway System as a category, however, work needs to be done to guarantee funding is specifically allocated to several lock and dam projects, including Lock and Dam No.25, Lock and Dam No.24 and the LaGrange Lock and Dam........

The Iowa Flood Center recently developed a new technology that can assist communities better prepare for flooding along the Missouri River. IFC created an interactive map that offers real-time information to landowners that may be affected by flooding.
The Missouri River Flood Information System is intended to allow landowners, farmers and businesses to be able to access crucial flood information during times of crisis.
The MRFIS is built on Google Maps and uses mathematical models and rainfall data to determine how far flooding could spread across the floodplains and residents can use the information to determine how their property will be affected........

Mississippi River History The First In A Series Of Earthquakes Rattled Territorial St. Louis In 1811........
Just after 2 am on December 16, 1811, a violent earthquake rattled people out of their beds in territorial St. Louis, including Joseph Charless, editor of St. Louis' first newspaper, the Louisiana Gazette.
While Charless thought the temblor was a volcanic eruption to the west. In reality, it was the beginning of the great New Madrid earthquakes several of which occurred over the next two months.
Boatmen and locals wrote in to The Louisiana Gazette and described the earth cracking open, giant cottonwood trees splitting, flatlands rolling like waves on the ocean, a sulfurous haze and flashing of light at night. The Mississippi River rose and fell in sudden thrashing tides and islands disappeared........

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois Aerie's Resort Is Adding An Alpine Coaster........
This coming September, Aerie's Resort in Grafton is planning on opening their latest attraction, a 2 person Alpine Coaster. The coaster will be the first of it's kind in Illinois.
The two seat coaster sled will run more than 3,000 feet on rails winding around natural formations and reaching speeds of up to 25 MPH. At the end of the run, there will be a cable system that will lift the sled and it's passengers back up the bluff.
Sandy Lorton, co0owner of Aerie's Resort says that they are excited to bring a world-class attraction to Grafton, Illinois. She adds that the coaster is something that they have been wanting to build at Aerie's for several years, and now that dream is becoming reality........

Asian Carp Update Who Will Pay For $850 Million Carp Defense Project?
The invasive Asian carp poses a threat to the Great Lakes' economy and environment, but the proposed $858 million Brandon Road Ecosystem Project along the Des Plaines River is expected to stop the carp's advance. The big question is Who will pay for the fortification project?
All eight members of the Council of Great Lakes Governors, which includes Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, signed a letter stating that none of the states can afford to pay for the project and calls on the federal government to fund it.
The project involves the installation of additional barriers at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam near Joliet, Illinois. An electric barrier, acoustic deterrent, air bubble curtain and a flushing lock in a newly engineered channel are technologies included in the project........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer Yamaha To Acquire Siren Marine........
Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A. recently announced that the Yamaha Marine Systems Co. intends to purchase vessel connectivity company Siren Marine. This transaction is slated to be completed before the year's end. The terms were not disclosed.
Earlier this year, Yamaha had acquired a minority stake in Siren Marine. This acquisition and the development of connected products fits with Yamaha's CASE strategy. CASE is an acronym for connected, autonomous, shared/service and electrification.
The Siren products will remain Siren-branded and the development teams will continue to operate out of Siren's Newport, Rhode Island headquarters, as well as Yamaha's Kennesaw, Georgia headquarters........

Boating News From Paris, France Olympians To Ride Boats During 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony........
On Monday, the organizers of the 2024 Paris Games announced that the thousands of Olympic athletes will be riding boats along the River Seine during the opening ceremony of the 2024 summer games.
Approximately 160 boats will be taking athletes along the River Seine from Pont d'Austerlitz in the east, westward to the Pont d'Inea below the Eiffel Tower.
Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris Olympics organizing committee says that instead of athletes spending hours standing in a stadium, they will be able to take a relaxing boat ride to the Trocadero gardens, where seats await them in the grandstands........

Missouri River At Jefferson City, Missouri Bicentennial Bridge Opening December 20th........
For more than 10 months, crews have been working on the Bicentennial Bridge, which was slated to be completed and open to the public by October 2021. The opening had been postponed because of fabrication issues. Officials have announced that the Bicentennial Bridge will be opening on December 20, 2021.
Jefferson City Mayor Carrie Tergin says that one of the most important features of the Bicentennial Bridge is that it links downtown Jefferson City and the Missouri River. Tergin adds that Jefferson City was founded as a capitol city due to it's location along the Missouri River.
Tergin says that the bicentennial flags are hanging on the bridge to celebrate Missouri's bicentennial year. She adds that it is exciting to have completed the Bicentennial Bridge during the state's bicentennial year........

The event began with a flag retirement ceremony at the post and then continued to the Anderson Ferry on the Ohio River, where wreaths were tossed into the Ohio River to remember Pearl Harbor Day....

Mississippi River Near Dorena, Missouri Dorena-Hickman Ferry Shut Down Until Further Notice........
On Tuesday, December 14, officials with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced that the Dorena-Hickman Ferry has been shut down until further notice.
According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the closure is due to an issue with the ferry's transmission gearbox.
The Dorena-Hickman crosses the Mississippi River between Missouri Routes A and 77 near Dorena, Missouri and KY 1354 at Hickman, Kentucky........

In the middle of the night a 700 foot section of the dam at Taum Sauk Reservoir gave way and sent a massive wall of water pouring down Proffit Mountain. Located near Lesterville, Mo. The water for the reservoir is pumped from the east fork of the Black River.

St. Louis Boat Show Update Show Cancelled For 2022........
The organizers of the annual St. Louis Boat and Sportshow at the America's Center have announced that the show has been cancelled for the second year in a row. They say it will return for 2023.
Organizers say that supply chain issues, lack of available boats and problems with booking dates at the America's Center contributed to the decision. Brian Hall, spokesman for the St. Louis convention and visitors commission says that the America's Center has dates available that would meet the boat show's needs,
Currently, boats are a hot commodity, and vessels are selling faster than they can be produced. The prices for used boats are soaring and owners are on waiting lists for harbor slips. Boat repair work is backed up as well, sometimes for months........

Mississippi River At West Alton, Missouri MoDOT Releases Video Showing Simulated View Of U.S. 67 Project........
The Missouri Department of Transportation is currently working on plans for raising the lower lanes of U.S. 67 heading into Missouri from Alton, Illinois, as these lanes are usually affected by moderate to major flooding. The project is expected to be complete in 2023.
MoDOT is working to widen the road bed the upper lanes are located on to make room for two lanes in each direction. MoDOT has released a video simulation of what the finished project will look like.
There was discussions about putting signals in at Riverlands Way near the gas station, however, that idea was scrapped in favor of J-turns for safety reasons........

Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana Construction Starts On New Mississippi River Deepwater Oil Terminal........
The first phase of construction has begun on the NOLA Oil Terminal along the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. The required permits for Phase 1 are in place and site preparation and environmental studies have been completed.
The wharves and docks that make up Phase 1 of the oil and refined products terminal are expected to be completed by mid-2022 at a cost of $300 million. The land-side construction of the $930 million project will be done during Phase 2 of the project.
Phase 1 includes two deep water berths for tankers and one barge dock. The berths will be able to handle the mooring of 170,000 ton vessels, while the barge dock will be able to serve inland and ocean going barges.........

Driven by continued strong demand for outdoor recreation products, Johnson Outdoors saw revenues increase by 26 percent to $751.7 million during fiscal year 2021, setting a record for the Racine, Wisconsin-based manufacturer.
Net income increased by 51 percent to $83.4 million, or $8.21 per diluted share, as compared to $55.2 million, or $5.47 per diluted share during fiscal year 2020.

Niagara River Near Niagara Falls, New York The Car Stranded In Niagara River Has Gone Over The Falls.........
The car that was partially submerged near the edge of Niagara Falls following a daring rescue attempt last week has gone over the falls and is not visible from the shore.
Last Wednesday, a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer descended from a cable lowered from a hovering helicopter and pulled a woman from the car. State park police said that the woman likely drove into the river on purpose. She did not survive.
The car was last seen around 9 pm Saturday evening in the rapids above the American Falls amid rising water and heavy winds. By dawn Sunday morning, the car was gone........

Missouri River Management Op/Ed: Return Missouri River To Former Healthy State........
This year, the well-regarded conservation group, American Rivers, gave the Lower Missouri River rating of second most endangered river in America. Man-made alterations to the river in the name of flood control, irrigation, hydropower and navigation have forever altered the Missouri River.
The natural oxbows and side channels along the Missouri River have been lost, and flooding events have become worse than they had been previously. Between mainstem dams and narrowing levees, the sediment load that once replenished the Mississippi River Delta has been lost.
A coalition of conservation and environmental groups including the Izaak Walton League, the Sierra Club and the Nebraska Wildlife Federation are calling on Congress to fund the Missouri River Recovery Program, which would create and restore crucial fish and wildlife habitat along the lower Missouri River........

Missouri River Management Corps Increased Releases From Fort Peck Reservoir........
This month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stepped up their releases from the Fort Peck Reservoir along the Upper Missouri River from 5,000 cubic feet per second to 9,000 cubic feet per second.
The Corps made the increase in an effort to balance out the water storage capacities in the Upper Missouri River Basin Reservoirs. Last week, the Corps also announced that they were reducing the releases from the Gavins Point Dam, drawing the 2021 Missouri RIver Navigation Season to a close.
John Remus, chief of the Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that the Corps will be closely monitoring river conditions and the dam releases will be adjusted over the winter as needed to reduce the effects of river ice formation along the Lower Missouri River.........

Upper Missouri River Management Corps To Study Dam Releases Effects On Pallid Sturgeon Spawning........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that they will be conducting tests to determine whether controlled water releases from the Fort Peck Dam in Montana could help endangered pallid sturgeon spawn.
According to John Remus, chief of the Corps' Missouri River Water Management Division, the tests would be conducted when "conditions are favorable". He says that at this time, hydrologic conditions will not likely support a flow test during 2022.
A strong water year will be necessary to support the proposed testing for pallid sturgeon reproduction. As of November, around 82 percent of the Upper Missouri RIver Basin was experiencing some form of drought or abnormally dry conditions........

Lake Michigan Near St. Joseph, Michigan Car Graveyard Visible At Times Of Low Lake Levels........
As the levels of Lake Michigan rise and fall, the bluff atop which is the city of St. Joseph has been eroding away. During the 1960s, the lake was at a high point and was threatening several homes.
One man took it upon himself to combat the situation be using old cars to form a breakwater along the shore. Reportedly, the idea to push cars over the edge of the bluff came from Carl Kuyat. Before the State of Michigan heard of the plan, Kuyat and others had dumped over 150 cars into the lake.
Now that the level of Lake Michigan is low, the final resting spots of those cars are clearly visible. Some people use drones to check out the scene, but more adventurous people climb down for a closer look........

Added Sun River Dawg News From Evansville, Indiana Dog Adopted After Swimming Across The Ohio River........
A stray dog that swam some 3,300 feet across the Ohio River between Evansville, Indiana and Henderson County, Kentucky a year ago has been adopted following a year of training and trust-building.
Rescue dog Allie ran away from her owner on December 5, 2020 and spent an hour swimming across the Ohio River. When Allie was in the river, responders with the Evansville Police, Fire and Animal Control Departments tried to rescue the dog, but she stayed out of reach.
Despite nearly getting hit by a barge, Allie made it to Kentucky, and immediately headed tot he woods. Rescuers worked for more than a week to coax the dog to safety, and was eventually corralled. Volunteer trainer Michelle Phillips took Allie in and knew quickly the dog was finally home.........

On Saturday, Santa and Mrs. Claus were on hand at Cooper's Landing along the Missouri River at Columbia, Missouri to greet visitors and to teach them to be good stewards of the Missouri River.
Portraying Santa and Mrs. Claus were Barney and Eileen Combs, who are volunteers with Missouri River Relief. They hosted the peer-to peer fundraiser with the goal of raising $5,000 for Missouri River Relief as part of the CoMoGives Campaign.
Combs says that if the Santa at the River fundraiser works out for Missouri River Relief, it will be a lot of fun to do it again next year. The Combses took donations from visitors to be able to see and take photos with Santa. There was also an informational booth about Missouri River Relief........

Added Sun Mississippi River Near Le Claire, Iowa I-74 Bridge Completed, Now On To I-80 Bridge Project........
After being in the works for decades, the Interstate 74 bridge in the Quad Cities has been completed. With that project out of the way, planning can begin on a new Interstate 80 Bridge spanning the Mississippi River between LeClaire, Iowa and Rapids City, Illinois.
This week, the Illinois Department of Transportation authorized their consultant to start the initial phase of engineering studies for the Interstate 80 Bridge replacement.
At this point it is too soon to say where the new bridge will be located, be it upstream, downstream or in the same location of the current span. The first phase of the I-80 engineering study is expected to take several months and the DOT expects to be requesting public input.........

Added Sun Ohio River Near Paducah, Kentucky High Winds Shut Down Cave-In-Rock Ferry........
At 9 am Saturday morning, the Cave-In-Rock Ferry ceased operations because of high winds in the region. At 5 pm, the ferry was able to resume service as the winds had tapered off.
The Cave-In-Rock Ferry connects Illinois Route 1 with Kentucky 91 across the Ohio River between Hardin County, Illinois and Crittenden County, Kentucky.
Each day, approximately 500 cars are carried across the Ohio River by the Cave-In-Rock Ferry, and it also serves as a tourist attraction and tourism link between the Shawnee National Forest and the nearby Amish Community in Crittenden County........

Lewis and Clark arrived in the Riverbend region on December 13, 1803 as they made preparations to explore the vast lands west of the Mississippi River which were recently acquired in the Louisiana Purchase.
The Arrival at Camp River Dubois event is a fully operational military camp that features interpreters displaying the weapons and medical practices in use at the time. Site Spokesman Ben Pollard says that a predecessor of the modern-day Santa Claus will be stopping by as well........

Mississippi River Infrastructure Midwestern Legislators Call For Infrastructure Funding........
Several Midwestern Congressmen have been calling on officials to allocate federal funding for infrastructure repairs and improvements on the Upper Mississippi River System.
According to Missouri Senator Roy Blunt, the infrastructure repairs and upgrades needed at some Mississippi River Locks and Dams are needed for the river to remain a competitive shipping avenue.
Blunt says that barges get backed up along the Mississippi RIver because tows have to be disassembled to pass through the smaller lock chambers and then reassembled prior to proceeding down the river, costing time and efficiency........

Lake Michigan Near Chicago, Illinois Christmas Tree Ship Brings Trees Donated To Families In Need........
Each December, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw travels from Cheboygan to Chicago loaded with hundreds of Christmas trees that are donated to families in need.
This tradition dates back to the early 20th Century, with the first Christmas Ship, the Rouse Simmons, which was a three-masted wooden schooner piloted by Captain Herman Shuenemann, who became affectionately known as "Captain Santa".
For many years, the ship's arrival in Chicago was eagerly anticipated, until 1912, when the Rouse Simmons and her crew were lost in a violent storm off the Wisconsin coast.
The Christmas trees stopped arriving in Chicago by ship for several decades until the U.S. Coast Guard brought back the tradition in 2000. The trees are distributed throughout Chicago by the non-profit Ada S. McKinley Community Services........

Mercury Marine, a division of the Brunswick Corporation has announced that they would be opening a centralized, purpose-built distribution center in support of their industry-leading parts and accessories business.
The new 512,000 square foot facility will be strategically located near Indianapolis, Indiana, which will improve delivery and service to the company's global customers, all while adding capacity for scale, stability and a reduction in logistic costs.
Mercury Marine's current distribution center is located at the company's world headquarters in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. That facility will be repurposed in support of the company's award-winning propulsion systems, allowing Mercury to increase capacity and production capabilities........
