     River History....

November 30, 1835 in River History

Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on this day in Florida, Missouri. Better known by his pen name Mark Twain.
He is one of Missouri's favorite native son's. The man was born in Florida, Mo, lived in Hannibal, Mo and St. Louis Mo.

He was a riverboat captain, a journalist, a lecturer (comic) and an author.

He lived most of his boyhood years on the banks of the Mississippi River in Hannibal, Mo and the town and its inhabitants became the subjects of Mark Twain's later famous writings........ especially The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

At the age of seventeen Samuel Clemens went to work on the Mississippi River and later became a steamboat pilot.

His pen name ....."Mark Twain" came from his years on the river. When two fathoms or 12 feet of water were measured on the sounding line the words "Mark Twain" were called out to the riverboat captain... meaning ..."Safe Water."

Born .....November 30, 1835 Died.....April 21, 1910

Lake Of The Ozarks

Record Number Of Boaters In Fall Harbor Hop....  Winner Draws A Royal Flush....

Organizers for the Lake of the Ozarks' final big event, the Fall Harbor Hop, report a record number of boaters participated in this year's event, and that the winner drew the rarest poker hand you can get.

The 36th Annual Fall Harbor Hop was held on Saturday, October 9th and drew in a record 2,376 participants.  The winning poker hand was a rare royal flush.

The winners of this year's Fall Harbor Hop came from seven different states. Event organizers say that the poker hands were some of the best they had seen in years.........

Missouri River Shipping

Farmer Co-Op:  Return Of Barges Further Upstream Good For Business........

Farmers in western Iowa have a real shipping alternative for the first time since the early 2000s, as barge traffic has resumes along the Lower Missouri River.  Before, cargo was shipped by rail or truck and then loaded onto barges along the Mississippi River.

At one time, there were ports operating at Blencoe and Sioux City, Iowa.  Last spring, Fort Dodge-based NEW Cooperative returned Missouri River access with the construction of an $11 million barge terminal near Blencoe. This is the northern-most port along the Missouri River.

According to NEW Cooperative's director of operations, Frank Huseman, some of the barges that came upriver and unloaded left empty because of "contractual obligations".  He says in order to be most efficient, all barges coming up with a load should return with a load........

Mississippi River Near St. Louis, Missouri

MotoMart Again Proposes Gas Station Adjacent To The River........

Once again, MotoMart has proposed the construction of a gas station along the Missouri side of the Mississippi River adjacent to the Jefferson Barracks Bridge.  St. Louis County officials had rejected MotoMart's first proposal last year.

The $1.45 million parcel of property is currently vacant and zoned for industrial usage.  The land is designated as part of the flood plain.  Bussen Quarries operates next door.

The Planning Commission had recommended denial of the prior proposal because among other reasons, the proposal was "not aesthetically or visually appealing at this gateway into St. Louis County along the Mississippi River"........

Culver-Stockton College Introduces River Research Program........

A river research center was recently established at the Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri.  The small liberal arts college of about 1,000 students was established in 1853 and is located on a hill overlooking the Mississippi River and Lock and Dam No.20.

The center has been established in order to increase student's awareness of the importance of river transportation and address the current and emerging economic and social importance of the Mississippi River.

College president Doug Palmer says that the students will benefit from learning more about the role the river system plays in American history as well as trade and business.........

Marriage Proposal Made With The Help Of An Underwater Santa & Elf........

On Saturday, SIU student Kushal Prajapati proposed to SEMO student Avery Clubbs with the help of an underwater Santa Claus and his elf at the St. Louis Aquarium during a dive show.

The underwater elf was asked if Clubbs was on the "naughty list" and he answered with a sign saying "Avery:  Kush wants to ask you to marry him!"  She turned to find Kush on one knee.  The couple's birthdays are only a day apart in May, so they will marry in that month as well.

The divers will be dressed as Santa and his elf each Saturday and Sunday through December 19 and again at 1:15 pm on December 24.  The dive shows are free with Aquarium admission........

Lower Mississippi River

Two Studies Indicate Diversions Can Help Rebuild Louisiana Land........

Two recent studies indicate that Louisiana's $2 billion Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion project could overcome the land subsidence rate in the lower third of Louisiana and rebuild the land faster than it is sinking.

According to Tulane University geology professor and co-author of the studies, Torbjorn Tornqvist, the studies show that despite the accelerated subsidence rate that occurs with renewed sediment deposition, there are still locations that can see a considerable amount of elevation gain.

These new findings bolster the case for constructing large scale sediment diversion projects, which mimic how the Mississippi River built the lower reaches of Louisiana........

Historic Towboats

A look Back At The Diesel Powered Herbert Hoover........

In the early part of the 20th century, river barge transportation had largely been phased out by the railroads, however, when World War I began, it quickly became apparent that river transportation was a vital necessity.

The federal government formed the Inland Waterways Corporation, which was basically a federally owned barge line intended to revitalize river transportation.  Also known as the Federal Barge Line, the corporation began with towboats purchased or requisitioned from other governmental entities while new vessels were planned and built.

By the 1920s, diesel power had come into favor, and in 1930, the Dubuque Boat & Boiler Company launched the "World's Largest Diesel Towboat", the Herbert Hoover.  It was no surprise that the vessel was named for Hoover, as he was a long time advocate for the river system and supporter of improving the nation's navigable waterways........

Mississippi River Near Granite City, Illinois

A Look At The Sinister History Of The Old Chain Of Rocks Bridge........

The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge spanning the Mississippi River near Granite City, Illinois has been closed to vehicular traffic more than 50 years ago, however, it has become a popular attraction to trail-goers and bicyclists in the bi-state region.

The span features a 22 degree bend in it's center and for many years carried Route 66 over the Mississippi River.  The bridge was featured in John Carpenter's "Escape From New York" and in 2006, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.  The span also has a darker history.

In the overnight hours of April 4-5, 1991, the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge would become the scene of the rape and murder of sisters Julie and Robin Kerry.  Their bodies were thrown from the bridge.  Three weeks later, the body of 20 year old Julie Kerry was found in the river near Caruthersville, Missouri.  19 year old Robin Kerry was never found........

Quincy Public Schools Adding Bass Fishing To Extracurricular Activities........

On Tuesday night, the Quincy Public School Board approved a plan to add bass fishing as a new Illinois High School Association activity at Quincy High School.  The program will begin in the spring of 2022.

QPS superintendent Roy Webb says that the program will be an opportunity for kids that are not involved in other extracurricular activities.  He adds that research indicates that kids are involved in something in the schools, it helps them to be successful in other areas of the school.

Students involved in the bass fishing program will not only have the opportunity to sharpen their fishing and leadership skills, they will be able to earn scholarships to further their education.........

The Riverboat Julia Belle Swain

And John Hartford........

While Trolling The Internet....  We reeled in an undated black and white photo of the steamer Julia Belle Swain along the Alton Riverfront.  The photo's caption states that singer and composer John Hartford took a trip down the Mississippi River aboard the vessel....

Click here to check out this photo from thetelegraph.com.

In addition to being a singer and composer, St. Louis native John Hartford was a towboat and steamboat pilot.  He earned his steamboat pilot's license in the 1970s, and worked as a tow boat pilot on the Mississippi, Illinois and Tennessee Rivers.  He spent many summers working as a pilot aboard the steamboat Julia Belle Swain.

Hartford eventually settled in Madison, Tennessee.  His home was located on a bend of the Cumberland River and was constructed to simulate the view from the deck of a steamboat.  That bend in the Cumberland River is referred to as Hartford's Bend or John Hartford Point and is denoted on official navigational charts with the John Hartford Light....

CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY
The following zones are in the high water watch phase in accordance with the Illinois Waterway Action Plan Annex:
  Copperas (Mile 145.5 – Mile 129.0),
  Havana (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0),

Mariners should exercise caution and minimize wake in all high water zones. The laying-up on saturated levees is prohibited. Mariners should be experienced in high water conditions and to avoid down-streaming operation. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in debris and maneuver appropriately. Be aware that a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have occurred and take appropriate action to prevent barge breakaways. Exercise caution in all passing/meeting situations as swift current may be present. Navigation buoys may have been dragged off station, so remain alert while transiting. Recreational traffic is discouraged.

Mississippi River Locks And Dams

The Lock And Dam System Keeps River Traffic Flowing During Low Water........

This year's lack of rainfall within the Upper Mississippi River Basin resulted in plenty of river days, but also low water levels along the Mississippi River which reduces access to certain areas.  The main channel of the Mississippi River was never impassible, and that is due to the Lock and Dam system.

Dan Fasching, a hydraulic engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District says that the locks ad dams are used mainly for commercial shipping interests, and recreational boaters as well.

The lock and dam system is not in place for flood control, it is in place for periods of low water levels.  They help keep the Mississippi River high enough for navigation in times of drought........

Kentucky Official Promotes New Asian Carp Removal Method........

Lyon County Judge Executive Wade White penned a letter to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell requesting he prevent the U.S. Geological Survey from using it's modified unified method of catching Asian carp.  This method involves teams of boaters setting a net at the mouth of a bay and using lights, sounds and channels formed by smaller nets to corral the carp into a smaller part of the bay for removal.

According to White, the USGS method is too expensive for the amount of carp harvested and he proposed using a new commercial fishing methods to complete the task instead.  Wade Robbins has been working on this fishing method with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to test the experimental method.

White reports that on the day he watch Robbins' crew in action, they had caught around 27,000 pounds of Asian carp within a four hour period.  During that time, only two native species caught was a lone redear and one channel catfish.  Both were returned to the water unharmed........

The Gulf Coast

Heavy Rains, Freshwater Diversions Kill Off Baby Oysters........

Heavy rainfall along the Mississippi coast has damaged the state's current generation of oysters, only two years after fresh water from the Bonnet Carre Spillway nearly wiped out live adult oysters along the reefs.

According to Mississippi oyster farmer Anita Arguelles, fresh water was killing half of the small seed oysters they purchased to grow in cages at the French Hermit Oyster Co. farm.  The oysters that survived were stunted.

Arguelles says that the freshwater has reduced the oyster crop by about 30 percent, because they are either too small or they're dead.  She adds that they are seeing a large number of runts and they fill buckets with dead oysters when harvesting those large enough to sell........

Lake Of The Ozarks

A Boater's Guide To Fuel Docks Still Open Over the Winter........

While the summer has been gone for some time and the specter of winter is looming in the wings, the majority of boaters on the Lake of the Ozarks has had their boats winterized and are dreaming of warmer days.

There are, however, some die-hard boaters who will still hit the water for a winter cruise and some anglers will head out for a little winter fishing.  Some boaters never have an off-season.  These boaters will need to be able to fuel up their boats throughout the winter months.

Many marinas shut down for the late fall and winter months, but others will remain open and will be able to cater to the needs of the year-round boater on the Lake of the Ozarks.  LakeExpo.com has assembled a list of marinas who are still open, when they plan to close........

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

ILLINOIS WATERWAY

CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY
The following zones are in the high water watch phase in accordance with the Illinois Waterway Action Plan Annex:
  Copperas (Mile 145.5 – Mile 129.0),
  Havana (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0),
  Beardstown (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3) and
  Meredosia (Mile 82.0 – Mile 50.0).

MILE 80.2 - L/D CLOSURE/WICKET MAINTENANCE/DIVE OPERATION
Continuing until further notice, wicket maintenance will be conducted at LaGrange L/D in the vicinity of Mile 80.2. This operation will involve the use of divers. Mariners MUST contact the LaGrange L/D and the M/V CREVE COEUR via VHF-FM Channel 13, 14 or 82, a minimum of 1-mile away from the L/D, to determine status of this operation. Mariners may be requested to hold up, before transiting over the dam, to enable the divers to safely exit the water and the maintenance fleet to reposition. The purpose of this closure is to inspect and repair wickets 108 and 109, which requires the dam to be down. Mariners are urged to transit the area at their slowest safe speed to minimize their wake and proceed with caution after passing arrangements have been made. Mariners may contact the USACE Little Rock District at (309) 665-2679, for additional information.

MISSOURI RIVER
CHANNEL CONDITION/COTP ADVISORY
The following reaches are in the low water watch phase in accordance with the Western Rivers WAP Annex:
  Jefferson (Mile 200.0 – Mile 100.0) and
  Washington (Mile 100.0 – Mile 0.0).
Deep draft tows are advised to depart the area. Due to narrow channel width and to minimize damage, vessels shall transit these reaches at their slowest safe speed. Tow operators are advised to place their heaviest barges in the middle of the tow and identify fleeting areas in the event of a river closure.

The Great River Road Race is a 10 mile run that begins and ends in Downtown Alton.  The race will start at 10 am.  There is also a shorter 5K run.  The 10 mile run is five miles along the Great River Road, with the Mississippi RIver on one side and the towering bluffs on the other.

USPS Introduces Stamp Series Honoring The Mississippi River........

The U.S. Postal Service recently announced that in the spring of 2022, they would be releasing their Mighty Mississippi collection of 10 stamps, which honor the Mississippi River.

The stamp series features images taken from photographs from the 10 states that the Mississippi River touches.  On the back side of the pane is a map of the central United States that shows the Mississippi River and it's main tributaries.

USPS spokeswoman Sara Martin says that the stamp collection featuring the Mississippi River was a perfect fit for the postal service in choosing images important to the nation........

Corps Removing Dredged Sand From Storage Site........

Earlier this month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District and contractor Beach Transport Inc. started removing dredged material from the Homer Placement Site near Winona, Minnesota.

Corps officials expect that the contractor will relocate approximately 50,000 cubic river sand from the Homer Placement Site five miles to the Yeadke Quarry by Christmas.

This project will restore storage capacity that was used up by this summer's dredging activities.  Contractors for the had Corps dredged approximately 56,000 cubic yards of river sand from the Mississippi River navigational channel........

Wake For Warriors

Helps Heal Wounded Veterans Across the Nation........

Back in 2012, Dave Deep founded Wake for Warriors which is a water sports therapy program for injured military personnel.  He came up with the idea after finding solace in watersports upon returning home from several tours in Afghanistan.

Deep says that after returning home, he found that the best way for him to relax and enjoy life was to get behind a boat and hit the water.  He adds that watersports had kind of a calming effect and he wanted to share that with other Veterans.  At that point, Wake for Warriors was founded.

Close to a decade later, Wake for Warriors is going on strong, with 30 events across the nation and 270 participants this year alone.  Veterans come from all across the nation to hit the water and learn to wakeboard and wakesurf........

Roaring River Near Cassville, Missouri

Search On For Source Of Roaring River Spring........

Over the past several years, researchers have been trying to determine the source of water for the Roaring River Spring near Cassville in southwestern Missouri.  Hydrologists Ben Miller and Bob Lerch have been conducting dye-tracing tests in the area surrounding the spring in order to determine the extent of it's "recharge basin", or area that the spring draws the 20.4 million gallons of water it releases each day.

Miller, a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, says that Roaring River is one of the most important springs in Missouri.  It is the 20th largest in the state, and the largest in Southwest Missouri.  He adds that it is crazy to have a spring of Roaring River's size and it is unknown where the water comes from.  So far, the furthest known point to provide water to the spring is the small community of Wayne, approximately 11 miles away.

This year, divers searched for the bottom of the Roaring River Spring,  They reached a depth of 472 feet, making Roaring River Spring the deepest natural spring in the United States to date.  The divers have not found the bottom, however, they report that at that depth, the sides have narrowed into a tunnel that continues to angle downward........

LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS

District 8 MRS                                                 UPDATED NOVEMBER 17, 2021

Mississippi River System

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

~

ILLINOIS WATERWAY

CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY
The following zones are in the high water watch phase in accordance with the Illinois Waterway Action Plan Annex:
  Copperas (Mile 145.5 – Mile 129.0),
  Havana (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0),
  Beardstown (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3) and
  Meredosia (Mile 82.0 – Mile 50.0).

2021 Upper Mississippi River Shipping Season Draws To A Close........

On Tuesday, November 23, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District locked through the final tow to depart from St. Paul, Minnesota, ending the 2021 navigation season along the Upper Mississippi River.

The final tow was the Motor Vessel Johnathon Erickson, which was pushing five barges loaded with soybeans, grain and scrap metal/  Typically, the last tow to leave St. Paul departs during the last week of November or the first week of December.

As the 2021 navigation season draws to a close, the Corps' St. Paul District will remain busy over the winter with maintenance projects scheduled at six of the district's locks and dams.  The repair work is slated to be completed by March 17, 2022........

Missouri State Highway Patrol

News Release.....

November 23, 2021
EMPHASIS: Be A Courteous, Attentive Driver This Thanksgiving Holiday!

Colonel Eric T. Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, reminds everyone there will be an increase in traffic over the Thanksgiving holiday. Drivers should remain alert to changes along their normal route. Regardless of traffic patterns, safety should remain a priority.

The counting period for the 2021 Thanksgiving holiday weekend is from 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2021, through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, November 28, 2021. Troopers will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E., enforcing all traffic laws, and available to assist the public. Over the 2020 Thanksgiving holiday counting period, 12 people were killed and 379 injured in 1,166 traffic crashes.

Drivers should make sure their vehicles are in good condition and that they are well rested before they start driving. Remember: There is never a reason to speed, drive aggressively, or drive impaired.

Too many people die in traffic crashes each year in Missouri. The choices you make when you’re behind the wheel matter. Make good choices, so you’ll never have to say, “If I could just go back …”

If temperatures are mild, boating or fishing might become part of your Thanksgiving holiday weekend plans. If so, remember there is less daylight, which makes your vessel's navigation lights essential. Check your lights and have extra bulbs on board before you head out. This time of year, the water is becoming colder and hypothermia is a concern. The body loses heat 25 times faster in water than in the air of the same temperature. If you take an unexpected plunge in cold water, it's important to get out of the water and into dry clothes as soon as possible. Most boaters wear more clothing this time of year, so the proper wearing of life jackets and using caution to avoid falling overboard is even more important. Having a plan as to how you would exit the water if you inadvertently fell overboard is imperative. For example, does your boat have an exterior swim ladder to allow you to re-enter the vessel?

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

The public is encouraged to call the Patrol's Emergency Report Line (800) 525-5555 or *55 on your cellular phone if they witness criminal activity or experience an emergency. These phone numbers are operational for both highway and water emergencies. If your celebration includes alcohol, designate someone else to drive whether you are in your boat or your car. Please don't become a statistic.

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois

Increased Funding Required For Barge Dock Project........

The estimated price tag for raising the elevation of the barge dock and unloading area along the Quincy, Illinois riverfront has increased by some $850,000 over the originally estimated cost.  The City Council will likely have to vote on an additional funding source.

Quincy Mayor Mike Troup had penned a draft letter to barge dock customers indicating that the elevation project would cost around $1.3 million.  Consulting firm, Klingner and Associates has determined that a sheet piling had degraded to a point that it would need to be reinforced prior elevating the dock.

THe revised estimate for the project is $2.2 million, which would be funded via a combination of state grants, barge dock reserves and a $0.29 per ton unloading fee increase that will take effect on January 1, 2022........

New I-74 Bridge Set To Open Soon........

The Quad Cities region is anxiously awaiting the final opening of the new Interstate 74 bridge spanning the Mississippi River between Bettendorf, Iowa and Moline, Illinois.  The project has taken four and a half years to complete.

Earlier this month, bridge officials, officials with the Illinois and Iowa departments of transportation, Federal Highway Administration and local officials announced that they expect the bridge to fully open to Illinois-bound traffic in early December.

Officials also announced that there will be a public opening ceremony scheduled for December 1, from 1 pm to 4 pm.  Attendees will be the first to set foot on the span prior to it being opened to road traffic.  The ceremony will only be accessible from the Moline, Illinois side of the bridge........

Some Highlights of This Week's

LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS

District 8 MRS                                                 UPDATED NOVEMBER 17, 2021

Mississippi River System

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

~

ILLINOIS WATERWAY

CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY
The following zones are in the high water watch phase in accordance with the Illinois Waterway Action Plan Annex:
  Copperas (Mile 145.5 – Mile 129.0),
  Havana (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0),
  Beardstown (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3) and
  Meredosia (Mile 82.0 – Mile 50.0).

   River History....

23 October 2013 In River History

A towboat pushing two barges collided with a jonboat on the Missouri River near the Lewis Bridge, which carries US Route 67 across the river. The collision was reported to the St. Charles County Sheriff's Department about 9:30 am. The johnboat operator apparently tried to cross the river in the path of the tow, despite numerous blasts of the tow's horn. The jonboat capsized, and went under the barge. Crew members from the tow, and workers from the St. Louis Bridge Company recovered the man and performed CPR until paramedics arrived.......

Ohio River Security

Bomb Spree Shows Need For Coast Guard Presence........

Last month's discovery of "suspected destructive devices" on three different vessels along the Ohio River served as a reminder that there are limited resources available to respond to emergency situations along the inland waterways.

Currently, the U.S. Coast Guard's inland waterway fleet is made up of 35 mostly utilitarian island, river and construction tenders which are thinly spread across the 12,000 miles of Inland waterways that are open to commercial traffic.

The Coast Guard is attempting to expand their inland waterway fleet with the addition of up to 30 Waterways Commerce Cutters, which are workboats that can meet the needs of today's Coast Guard........

Mississippi River Basin Aquifer

Supreme Court Decides Aquifer Dispute Between Tennessee and Mississippi........

The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled in the matter of Mississippi v. Tennessee, stating that water in an underground aquifer which flows across state lines is subject to equitable apportionment between the states, similar to interstate streams and rivers.

The Middle Claiborne Aquifer is located under eight states within the Mississippi River Basin, including Mississippi and Tennessee.  Water flows extremely slowly from Mississippi into Tennessee.

The suit claimed that the city of Memphis, Tennessee pumps so much water from the aquifer each day, that an excessive amount of water is drawn away from Mississippi.

The Supreme Court dismissed the case citing that surface water rights are governed under the doctrine of "equitable apportionment", which is intended to produce a fair allocation of a shared water resource........

Officials Hopeful Infrastructure Funds Can Increase River Shipping Capacity........

Included in the Biden Administration's signature $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill is $2.5 billion in funds for construction and major rehabilitation projects along the inland waterways.

The funding means that over the next five years, the Corn Belt Ports Region will see $1.8 billion for the construction of three 1,200 foot locks and Mississippi River Lock and Dam No. 24 and L&D No.25, as well as  at the LaGrange Lock and Dam along the Illinois River.

Within two months, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will put together a detailed spending plan, which will be submitted to the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate........

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

ILLINOIS WATERWAY

CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY
The following zones are in the high water watch phase in accordance with the Illinois Waterway Action Plan Annex:
  Copperas (Mile 145.5 – Mile 129.0),
  Havana (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0),
  Beardstown (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3) and
  Meredosia (Mile 82.0 – Mile 50.0).

November 23, 2020 in River History

The St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finalized the repairs to the auxiliary lock chamber miter gates at the Melvin Price Lock and Dam in Alton, IL.
Engineers, service base and lock personnel led the safe reconstruction work of the 280-ton miter gates that began with setting bulkheads, unhinging the pins and removing each gate, tediously laying the gate horizontal where the new metal was installed, sandblasted and repainted. Gates were then reattached and tested. It was all hands-on deck to restore service to the lock in 48 days. Miter gates are used on the upper and lower ends of the 110’ wide x 600’ long auxiliary lock.

Boat Manufacturer

High Horsepower Outboards In Demand On Pontoon Boats........

Back in 1994, Jim Dorris, CEO and founder of PlayCraft Boats fitted a 350 horsepower MerCruiser sterndrive in a 26 foot pontoon boat and ran it in the Shooters 21 Shootout on the Lake of the Ozarks.  He ran just over 47 MPH over the 1 mile course.

While plenty of people laughed at the idea of a pontoon boat participating in the shootout, Dorris' effort put him on the front page of the local newspaper and started a trend that keeps on growing.

In 2015, Brad Rowland set the pontoon boat speed record for the LOTO Shootout when he ran just under 114 MPH in a 25 foot South Bay pontoon rigged with triple Mercury Racing Pro Max 300X outboards.

Fast-forward to 2021 and manufacturers are riding the wave of popularity high-performance pontoon boats by offering triple-pontoon boats fitted with twin 400 and 450 horsepower outboards designed to run at speeds upwards of 80 MPH........

Deep draft tows are advised to depart the area. Due to narrow channel width and to minimize damage, vessels shall transit these reaches at their slowest safe speed. Tow operators are advised to place their heaviest barges in the middle of the tow and identify fleeting areas in the event of a river closure.

Firefighters Continued To Fight River Bluff Hot Spots........

Over the weekend, firefighters battled a fire along the Mississippi River bluffs near Grafton, Illinois.  The main focus of the firefighters was the containment of hot spots left over from the blaze.

QEM Fire Chief Gerry New says that a portion of the Great River Road was shut down on Sunday to allow firefighters to get at some hot spots on top of the bluff.  He added that firefighters were on scene all day Saturday and for around four hours Sunday.

Chief New said that the location of the fire made it dangerous and difficult to extinguish.  He stated that he is more than pleased with the teamwork exhibited by the QEM, Godfrey, Jerseyville, Brighton and Fieldon Fire Departments who were all on hand at times over the weekend........

Officials Discuss Infrastructure Bill Ramifications For Northeastern Missouri........

Last week, President Biden signed the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure and Jobs Act into law, and Missouri officials are looking at how the legislation will affect Northeastern Missouri.

Missouri State Representative Louis Riggs, (R-Hannibal) says that he is pleased to see that locks and dams would be receiving $2.4 million for necessary repairs.  He noted that the process had been approved in 2008, but funding for the projects was not available until now.

In Riggs' district, the Locks and Dams at Quincy, Illinois and Saverton, Missouri are scheduled for repair work.  Riggs adds that the locks and dams were constructed in the 1930s and are in desperate need of repair work........

Mississippi River At Muscatine, Iowa

Man Rescued From The River After Falling From A Barge........

Officials report that on Sunday afternoon, a man was rescued from the Mississippi River at Muscatine, Iowa after falling into the river from a barge near the Grain Processing Center.

The Muscatine Fire Department was called out around 3:20 pm for a report of a man falling from a barge that was unable to climb out of the water.  They deployed a rescue boat while other firefighters headed to the levee to assist.  The man was pulled into he boat and returned safely to shore.

Officials stated that the man had been in the 42 degree water for just over 20 minutes.  Battalion Chief Ted Hillard says that the rescue was one of the low frequency, high risk events that they train for. He added that high winds made their job more difficult, but the crew did a great job........

Diving Group Helps With Cold Cases With Vehicles In Waterways.........

A few weeks ago, the bodies of Joni Davis and Brian Goff were recovered from the Ohio River near Martins Ferry, Ohio after being missing for more than three years.  Their bodies were still in the car they were last seen in.

The discovery of the car and it's occupants was made by the Southern Illinois-based diving group ChaosDivers.  The group of divers find out about cold cases with vehicles in waterways and they head out and search for them.

Jason Grubbs, the lead diver for ChaosDivers says that the idea of the group was hatched when some of them were clearing out river systems and came across several vehicles.  After several dozen vehicles were found, a body was discovered in one of them.  Grubbs says that they decided to keep doing this to help families bring home their missing loved ones........

Model Riverboats

Steamboat Museum Recently Hosted Riverboat Model Extravaganza........

The Howard Steamboat Museum in Jeffersonville, Indiana recently hosted a riverboat model extravaganza.  The museum displays a model of the steam towboat Chicot, which was gifted by the master model maker John L. Fryant.

The model of the Chicot was built from scratch in 1999 and was originally radio controlled.  Another of Fryant's creations, the fictional sternwheel packet boat, New Big Sandy is also on display at the museum.

The real Chicot was built by the Howard Shipyard in 1925 and featured a steel hull measuring 126.5 feet in length, 23 feet in width and had a draft of 4.5 feet.  The vessel was owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and operated in the Vicksburg District, mainly as a dredge tender and towboat for revetment projects........
