Mississippi River At Kimmswick, Missouri

The Port Of Kimmswick Is Receiving First Riverboats........

While tourists are a fairly common sight in Kimmswick, Missouri, they typically arrive via Interstate 55 or Missouri Highway 67.  On Sunday, that is changing, as close to 225 tourists will be arriving at the Port of Kimmswick aboard the American Duchess riverboat.

According to Neal Breitweiser, the executive director of the Jefferson County Port Authority, the $1.3 million facility was designed and built with the largest riverboat in existence, the American Queen in mind, so handling smaller vessels should be no problem.

Stang says that this will be the first of many stops by the American Queen Steamboat company.  He adds that they are looking forward to the historic Delta Queen arriving in 2023, and other riverboat companies have expressed interest in stopping at Kimmswick as well........

June Had Highest Number Of Water Fatalities In A Decade........

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that during June, there were 17 water related fatalities, which is more than any other June in more than a decade.

Mid County Fire Protection District Chief Scott Frandson says that his team responds to the majority of water rescues and drownings at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Frandson says that the majority of the water rescues they have been involved with so far this year have been caused by driving through flooded roadways, getting into rivers that are flooded with heavy currents........

If a towing vessel has barges in tow, loaded to more than 2,000 tons, it should have a minimum of 250 h.p., for every 2,000 tons of cargo.

MILE 185.5 - L/D CLOSURES.
Continuing until August 20, 2021, L/D 27 in the vicinity of Mile 185.5, will be closed for repairs on the following schedule. One L/D chamber will be available to pass traffic at all times.
July 6, 2021 until July 28, 2021, Auxiliary lock closed and
August 2, 2021 until August 20, 2021, Main lock closed.
All navigation interests should be alert for, and abide by, any special instructions that may be issued by the lockmaster

MILE 183.2 - BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION
Merchants Railroad Bridge; Work barges continue excavating around both left and right descending navigation piers and the right descending pier of the center span. Work barges should not encroach more than 65 feet into the navigation channel, at any time. For work barge locations, mariners are encouraged to contact the onsite work boat M/V KATHERINE OHARA via VHF-FM Channel 6 or 16 or by phone at (217) 248-9077

Missouri River Near Columbia, Missouri

Large Fish Kill Beneficial For Missouri Ecosystem........

Officials with the Missouri Department of Conservation reports that a sizable fish kill following flooding in the middle portions of the Missouri RIver floodplain west of Columbia, Missouri along Interstate 70 is actually beneficial to the ecosystem.

Steffanie Abel, MDC Resource Science Assistant said that the many fish did not return to the river as floodwater receded.  As those pools dried up, the water temperature increased and the dissolved oxygen decrease, causing the fish kill.

THe upside to the situation is that the majority of the fish killed were Silver carp, a type of aquatic invasive species.  This fish kill event will provide food for many types of other wildlife species........

MDC Seeks Public Comment On Proposed Catfish Regulations........

THe Missouri Department of Conservation is requesting public input on proposed catfishing regulations.  They will be accepting public comments through August 15th.

THe first regulation would set a minimum length of 18, 21 or 24 inches for blue and flathead catfish on the Mississippi. Missouri and St. Francis Rivers.  At this time, there is no length limit for sport fishing, however, commercial fishermen have a 15 inch minimum.

The second regulation would limit sport anglers to only one blue catfish over 30 inches that may be kept from the Mississippi or Missouri Rivers......

Former Missouri Barge Line President Discussed Family Ties To The River........

On Thursday, Robert Erlbacher II , former president of Missouri Barge Line gave a presentation at the Kellerman Foundation for Historic Preservation in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, where he discussed his family's ties to the Mississippi River over the years.

He says that when he was a youngster, the shipyard was his playground. During summer breaks he worked in the shipyard and spent time aboard the boats as they hauled cement and other materials along the Mississippi River.

The Missouri Barge Line began in the 1930's as the Erlbacher Brothers Barge Line, which was a small boat building and river transportation business run by Robert and Eddie Erlbacher........

MR340 Race Update......

The 16th annual Missouri American Water MR340 starts on Tuesday, July 20. Several hundred paddlers will be heading east for 340 miles of intense, life-changing experiences on the Missouri River. All racers must make it to the finish line in St. Charles by Friday, June 23.

Missouri River Relief has been involved in the race since 2008, but this is our first year hosting the race.

Come Watch!
It can be a fun experience for anyone to stop by and watch the racers and their ground crews and cheer them on! It’s a really heart-warming experience to see so many people engaged together in such a difficult endeavor.

Volunteer!

We could use some more race volunteers at boat ramps across the state. This involves some physical exertion, helping racers that need help moving their boats up the boat ramp to keep things open and clear. Contact Race Director Scott Mansker.

Find all kinds of great information in our MR340 Race Library

Some Highlights of This Week's

LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS

District 8 MRS                                                 UPDATED July 07, 2021

Mississippi River System

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY
Within the St. Louis Harbor (Mile 184.0 – Mile 179.0), south-bound tows greater than 600 feet in length, excluding the towboat, should limit transit to daylight hours only. Towing vessels should have a minimum of 250 h.p., for each loaded barge. A loaded barge is considered to be a barge with up to 2,000 tons of cargo.

ILLINOIS RIVER

FIREWORKS DISPLAYS
Fireworks displays will be held in the vicinity of Mile 1.0, along the shoreline, on July 8, 15, 22, 29, 2021, August 5, 12, 19, 26, 2021 and September 2, 9, 2021, from 9:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., each day. Mariners are urged to exercise caution in the area, during event periods

ILLINOIS WATERWAY - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY

The following zones are in the high water watch phase in accordance with the Illinois Waterway Action Plan Annex:

Beardstown Zone (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3),
Meredosia Zone (Mile 80.2 – Mile 50.0) and
Hardin Zone (Mile 44.9 – Mile 10.0).
Mariners should exercise caution and minimize their wake in all high water zones. The laying up on saturated levees is prohibited. Mariners should be experienced in high water conditions and avoid down-streaming operations. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in debris and maneuver appropriately. Be aware that a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have occurred and take appropriate action to prevent breakaways. Exercise caution in all meeting situations, as swift currents may be present. Navigational buoys may have been dragged off station,so remain alert while transiting. Recreational traffic is discouraged.

MILE 80.2 - L/D MAINTENANCE/CLOSURE/DIVE OPERATIONS
Continuing until further notice, dive operations are being conducted at the LaGrange L/D in the vicinity of Mile 80.2. The L/D is closed to navigation. Mariners MUST contact the LaGrange L/D and the M/V CREVE COEUR via VHF-FM Channel 13, 14 or 82, a minimum of 1 mile away from the L/D.
Mariners may be requested to hold up before transiting over the dam, to enable divers to safely exit the water and the maintenance fleet to reposition. The purpose of this closure, is to replace wickets which require the dam to be down. Mariners are urged to transit the area at their slowest safe speed to minimize their wake and proceed with caution after passing arrangements have been made. Mariners may contact the USACE Rock Island at (309) 676-4601, ext. 4104, for additional information.

Solo Female Speed Record Attempt

From the Headwaters to the Gulf

Tracy Lynn Martin

Mississippi River Speed Record Solo Female EXPEDITION UPDATE:

EXPEDITION DAY 53

July 8th
I’ve paddled 2,186 per race owl.
I’ve paddled 94% of the river!

I left from under the Sunshine Bridge - River Mile 167
It was an exciting day.
I had several groups of deck-hands shout and wave at me from different ships.

A lady from the Louisiana Port Authority came and had the Port of South Louisiana Authority call me on my marine radio and asked me to land - when I did they gave me cold water and took my picture and gave me a cool hat!
It’s the first hat of my trip! It says South Louisiana Port Authority
***
A man named Corey Lee came out to see me too and he brought his family.
Today was also the first day that all of the barges and huge ships and tugs didn’t scare me.
I pulled out at the Norco Boat-ramp ..
(aka - Bonnet Carre Spillway Ramp)
River mile 127.

I was overwhelmed with emotion by the 30 or 40 people who were there waiting for me!! It was a wonderful feeling!
I’m staying tonight with a wonderful river Angel - Robin!
She made Marv Kuziel, Andrea, David and I spaghetti for dinner

Some Highlights of This Week's

LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS

District 8 MRS                                                 UPDATED July 07, 2021

Mississippi River System

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER - CHANNEL CONDITION/SAFETY ADVISORY
Within the St. Louis Harbor (Mile 184.0 – Mile 179.0), south-bound tows greater than 600 feet in length, excluding the towboat, should limit transit to daylight hours only. Towing vessels should have a minimum of 250 h.p., for each loaded barge. A loaded barge is considered to be a barge with up to 2,000 tons of cargo.

Havana Zone (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0),
Beardstown Zone (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3),
Meredosia Zone (Mile 80.2 – Mile 50.0) and
Hardin Zone (Mile 44.9 – Mile 10.0).

Water Skiing History....

8 July 1925

Ralph Samuelson, the man who invented water skiing and the water ski, became the first ever water ski jumper. He smeared cooking lard on a half-sunken diving platform and then proceeded to make a jump.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ralph Wilford Samuelson
(July 3, 1904–August 28, 1977) was the inventor of water skiing, which he first performed in the summer of 1922 in Lake City, Minnesota, just before his 19th birthday. Samuelson was already skilled at aquaplaning—standing on a board while being pulled by a powerboat—but he hoped to create something like snow skiing on the water. Lake Pepin, a wide portion of the Mississippi River between Minnesota and Wisconsin, was the venue for his experiments.
Officials Say The I-40 Bridge Should Reopen By Month's End........
The Tennessee Department of Transportation announced that their goal for reopening the Interstate 40 Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee is the end of July, however, the safety of the workers and the public is their main concern.
At this time, construction work is proceeding without delays.  TDOT spokesperson Nichole Lawrence says that over the weekend, crews made a lot of progress as they released and removed the post tensioning rods.
Lawrence added that the repair work on the initial fracture has been completed, and now the inspection process is underway.  Other areas that need attention have been identified, and repair strategies and part designing is underway........
Illegal Paddlefish Caviar Operation Busted........
On Wednesday, the Missouri Department of Conservation announced that they had uncovered an illegal paddlefish operation in Morgan County.  MDC agents had approximately 13 hours of surveillance of the operation.
When the MDC agents made the bust, three suspects were apprehended with five paddlefish in their possession, as well as about 75 pounds of paddlefish eggs called roe.
The roe is highly prized in wildlife trafficking and the illegal caviar markets.  The MDC says that they have seized the evidence in the case and have filed charges against the suspects........
Missouri State Highway Patrol
Be Aware Of The Laws When Hitting The Water........
Float trips are an excellent way to cool off from the summer heat, as well spending quality time with family and friends.  The Missouri State Highway Patrol wants to remind you that there are a few things that could get you into trouble, should you get caught doing them on Missouri waterways.
As far as alcohol consumption is concerned, the traditional laws pertaining to underage drinking and possession apply on the water as well.  In addition, rapid methods of alcohol consumption are banned, such as beer bongs and modified containers with additional vents or "shot gunning" a beer.
Alcohol isn't the only thing that there are laws for.  There are state rules covering water safety, snacks, trash, trespassing as well as indecent exposure........
Table Rock Lake
A Teen Saved From Drowning Is In Critical Condition........
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that on Tuesday evening, a 15 year old boy from Hollister was swimming at Moonshine Beach, a popular spot on Table Rock Lake when he got fatigued, slipped beneath the water surface.  He did not come bank up.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they found out that others had found the boy and brought him back to the surface.  Approximately 15 minutes after responders took over life saving efforts, The boy regained a pulse and was flown to a hospital.
Officials say that the boy has a fighting chance at survival.  The Western Taney County Fire Protection District says that the average citizen can increase chances for survival, and without the bystanders that took action, the incident could have had a different outcome........
The Picture of YesterYears on this day in 2019.... was sent to us by Capt'n Lawrence Schulte
Hi Bill,
Thought this picture is worth a thousand words. Captain Bill Nichols of the Chrissy Shell is taking his turn at cleaning the mud off the road in front of his boat at Woodland. We have been using snow shovels as well as pumping water from the river to try and clear the mud off the road. Sorry to say most of the harbors equipment was lost in the flood. We are determined to get things done at our harbor.
Alton's Splash Pad Nearing Completion........
Alton's newest water attraction saw more progress being made last week, as additional characters have been added to the Alton Splash Pad located in Riverfront Park near the Alton Marina.
So far, the splash pad has a steamboat, two bald eagles, a frog and other animals, all of which will spray water when the splash pad is completed later this summer.
Former Alton Mayor Brant Walker says that the recirculating splash pad is designed to provide a water play spot with nature-themed elements that tie into Alton's connection to the Mississippi River........
Senate Bill Prohibiting Dock Blocking Awaiting Governor's Signature........
Missouri Senate Bill SB49, which would change the laws about dock blocking, is on Governor Mike Parson's desk, awaiting signature.  If signed, the legislation would go into effect in August 28th.
The Senate bill bars vessels positioned within 100 feet of a permitted boat dock from being anchored in a way that obstructs ingress and egress of a vessel into and out of the dock, unless authorized by the boat dock permit holder.
The legislation also states that operating or positioning a vessel in a manner that obstructs or impedes the normal flow of traffic in the waters of the State of Missouri will be an infraction, as opposed to being a Class C misdemeanor for a first offense, or a Class B Misdemeanor for subsequences........
Mariners are encouraged to pre-identify lay-up areas in an event of river closure
River History....
5 July 2013 in River History
A woman went overboard on the Golden Eagle Ferry into the Mississippi River just as the ferry was leaving St. Charles County and headed towards Calhoun County, Illinois. The ferry was about 100 yards from the landing at upper end of Dardenne Slough when the woman went off the front ferry barge and into the river. Her body was found on July 8th and pulled from the Mississippi River morning south of the old Chain of Rocks bridge
Mississippi River Speed Record Solo Female EXPEDITION UPDATE:
      July 4
I woke up today in a lot of pain.
My hands are very swollen and painful, along with my forearms , shoulders, and back.
Moving very slowly.
Ann fixed me a wonderful breakfast of fresh fruit and a chocolate protein shake!
Marv made me coffee ☕️
😊
I had a WONDERFUL SURPRISE this morning ... Andrea and David Johnson are going to stay with us and be part of my support team until I reach Mile Marker Zero!!
They are amazing!
The plan is to do 50 miles today!
I have to be careful when I hit mile 48 to 49 because there’s an intake system where people have got sucked in and died. I will be careful!
Time to get moving!
Alton's Fireworks On The Mississippi Successfully Returns........
Alton's Fireworks on the Mississippi display is always breathtaking, and it didn't disappoint after making a successful return on Saturday, July 3rd following last year's cancellation.
Last year, the COVID-19 outbreak forced the cancellation of the Fourth of July Fireworks Display, and that may have made this year's fireworks display even more special.
The fireworks were launched from the Lincoln-Shields area in West Alton.  The U.S. Air Force Band performed prior to the fireworks show, and there were also food, drink, face-painting, shaved ice, lawn games and inflatables for the kids........
Water Safety
MSHP Warns OF Dangerous Water Conditions........
The Fourth of July weekend is upon us, and that usually translates to a lot of people hitting the water.  The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind everyone that the recent heavy rainfall has made river conditions treacherous.
The water levels in area creeks and rivers are up, and some have moderate flooding.  All of them, however, have strong currents.  Corporal Juston Wheetley says that the river doesn't discriminate.
The high river levels are also  a danger to boaters, as there is more debris in the water, some of which is lurking under water.  If a vessel strikes an object, underwater, passengers can get thrown from the boat.  The MSHP says that if you do hit the water, wear a life jacket........
Highways Commission Rejected Chester Bridge Project Bid........
The Missouri Department of Transportation reports that the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission did not award the contract to rehabilitate the Chester Bridge during their regular meeting on July 1.
MoDOT says that four bids were received for the project, however, they were all higher than expected, exceeding MoDOT's budget for the project.  The MHTC in turn directed MoDOT to identify alternative rehabilitation options for the bridge.
The Chester Bridge carries Route 51 across the Mississippi River, connecting the cities of Chester, Illinois and Perryville, Missouri..  The span will continue to be monitored with the next inspection slated for the fall........
Meramec River Near Ballwin, Missouri
Swimmer's Body Recovered From The River In Castlewood State Park........
Late Friday, responders recovered the body of a teenage girl from the Meramec River in Castlewood State Park.  Reportedly, she was swimming in the river with a group of people Friday afternoon, when she went underwater and never resurfaced.
Sergeant Tracy Panus, spokeswoman for the St. Louis County Police Department said that the past week's heavy rainfall has caused area waterways to rise, adding to the need for swimmers to take extra precautions, such as wearing life jackets.
Friday's drowning has added to Missouri's death toll, as at least 17 people have drowned or died in boating accidents in Missouri during June.  That is more than any previous June in the past decade........
Hardin Zone (Mile 128.9 – Mile 102.0) and
Grafton Zone (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3).
Mariners should exercise caution and minimize their wake in all high water zones. The laying up on saturated levees is prohibited. Mariners should be experienced in high water conditions and avoid down-streaming operations. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in debris and maneuver appropriately. Be aware that a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have occurred and take appropriate action to prevent breakaways. Exercise caution in all meeting situations, as swift currents may be present. Navigational buoys may have been dragged off station,so remain alert while transiting. Recreational traffic is discouraged
MISSOURI RIVER
The following areas are in the high water action phase IAW the Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Brunswick Reach (Mile 300.0 – Mile 200.0),
Jefferson Reach (Mile 200.0 – Mile 100.0) and
Washington Reach (Mile 100.0 – Mile 0.0).
Tow boat operators should exercise caution, minimize wake where possible and be experienced in high water operations. High water and drift could be experienced in this area. Exercise caution during down-streaming operations and be aware of bridge clearances. Recreational traffic is highly discouraged. Mariners should favor the center of the channel and avoid laying up on levees. Fleeting areas should have a towboat attend fleets at all times and have a breakaway plan in place. Mariners are encouraged to pre-identify lay-up areas in an event of river closure
Mississippi River Near Grafton, Illinois
The Piasa Bird May Not Be The Piasa After All.......
While the Piasa Bird is a familiar sight to those driving the along the Great River Road, not a lot is known about the mystical beast.  The Piasa depicted on the limestone is not the original, nor is it keeping true to the actual Native American legends.
The Piasa currently painted on the Limestone Bluffs near Alton looks kind of like a dragon with wings, a beard, deer antlers, a scaled body and a long tail, forked like a fish. This depiction was created by professor and fiction writer John Russell in 1836 based upon notes from French explorer and Jesuit missionary Father Jacques Marquette.  It is likely another indigenous cryptid from the mid-continent, which appeared everywhere from Lake Superior to South America.
Russell incorrectly derived the Piasa myth from the Illinois tale of the underwater panther, an aquatic cryptid.  The word payiihsa, which comes from the Miami-Illinois language refers to a different cryptid within a different story Russell may have heard from the indigenous people.  The Trickster, killing an underwater panther prior to being assaulted by two supernatural dwarves  The dwarves are what were referred to as the payiihsa by the Miami and Illinois tribes.
According to David Cross, the foremost authority on the Miami-Illinois language and professor at Miami University in Ohio, the Miami-Illinois payiihsa is the origin of the word Piasa........
Contact: 8th District Public Affairs
Office: 504-671-2020
After Hours: 618-225-9008
Eighth District online newsroom
Coast Guard, state, local authorities ramp up for heightened BUI awareness, enforcement weekend
Who: Paul Barnard, Coast Guard District Eight recreational safe boating program manager
What: Coast Guard personnel will be available via Skype or Zoom to talk about Operation Dry Water and boating safety
When: 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday, July 2
NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard, in partnership with the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, as well as federal, state and local law enforcement are preparing to heighten their presence as part of Operation Dry Water 2021 to commence throughout Coast Guard District Eight Friday through the holiday weekend.
Boaters should expect an increase in law enforcement presence on the water. Coast Guard District Eight, which covers 26 states including most of the Gulf Coast, saw 424 recreational boating fatalities in 2020, which is the highest number of deaths on the water in the last five years.
Of those 424 lives lost, about 18% were alcohol related. Operation Dry Water is a national campaign focused on reducing the number of alcohol and drug use on the water. The operation focuses on spreading the awareness of the danger of boating under the influence as well as changing cultural acceptance of boating while intoxicated.
"Fourth of July weekend is Operation Dry Water's heightened enforcement weekend, and last year, nationally, 625 intoxicated boaters were taken off the water," said Paul Barnard, Coast Guard District Eight recreational safe boating program manager. "The Coast Guard is going to be out there in force and will hold intoxicated operators accountable in accordance with the law."
Nationwide, in 2020 there were 767 recreational boating fatalities, 115 of those deaths were alcohol related. Operating a boat with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher is against federal law and most state laws. Alcohol can impair a boater's judgement, balance, vision and reaction time. It can also increase fatigue and susceptibility to the effects of cold-water immersion. Sun, wind, noise, vibration and motion intensify the side effects of alcohol, drugs and some medications. Impairment can be even more dangerous for boaters than for drivers.
Persons found to be boating under the influence can expect to incur severe penalties. If a boat operator is boating under the influence, the voyage may be terminated, the boat may be impounded, and the operator may be arrested. Penalties can include fines, jail, loss of boating privileges and even loss of driving privileges.
Media interested in conducting interviews on boating safety and Operation Dry Water should RSVP to Paul Barnard at 504-202-8948 Thursday evening or during the times provided Friday.
Upper Mississippi River Basin
There Be Sharks In These Waters........
There have been rare appearances of bull sharks in river systems and other freshwater ecosystems on five continents  This behavior has a long history based upon the wide geographical range of the phenomenon and the physiological adaptations allowing bull sharks' heading into freshwater, and fossil records.
Within the Mississippi River Basin, however, there have only been two bull sharks captured in the upper basin during the entire 20th century.  Other archeological, historical and paleontological evidence of these animals appearing more than 300 miles upstream from the Mississippi River Delta is virtually nonexistent.
Bull shark movements within the upper portions of the Mississippi River are rare.
Down-streaming operations are not recommended. Drift and debris may pose navigation obstructions. Buoys may have been dragged off station, so remain cautious while transiting.
ILLINOIS RIVER
MILE 1.0 - FIREWORKS DISPLAYS
Fireworks displays will be held in the vicinity of Mile 1.0, along the shoreline, on June 24, 2021, July 8, 15, 22, 29, 2021, August 5, 12, 19, 26, 2021 and September 2, 9, 2021, from 9:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., each day. Mariners are urged to exercise caution in the area, during event periods.
Grafton Zone (Mile 101.9 – Mile 80.3).
Mariners should exercise caution and minimize their wake in all high water zones. The laying up on saturated levees is prohibited. Mariners should be experienced in high water conditions and avoid down-streaming operations. Mariners should remain vigilant to an increase in debris and maneuver appropriately. Be aware that a buildup of debris in fleeting areas may have occurred and take appropriate action to prevent breakaways. Exercise caution in all meeting situations, as swift currents may be present. Navigational buoys may have been dragged off station,so remain alert while transiting. Recreational traffic is discouraged
MISSOURI RIVER
The following areas are in the high water action phase IAW the Western Rivers WAP Annex:
Brunswick Reach (Mile 300.0 – Mile 200.0),
Jefferson Reach (Mile 200.0 – Mile 100.0) and
Washington Reach (Mile 100.0 – Mile 0.0).
Tow boat operators should exercise caution, minimize wake where possible and be experienced in high water operations. High water and drift could be experienced in this area. Exercise caution during down-streaming operations and be aware of bridge clearances. Recreational traffic is highly discouraged. Mariners should favor the center of the channel and avoid laying up on levees. Fleeting areas should have a towboat attend fleets at all times and have a breakaway plan in place. Mariners are encouraged to pre-identify lay-up areas in an event of river closure
U.S. Coast Guard releases 2020 Boating Safety Statistics Report
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Coast Guard released its 2020 Recreational Boating Statistics Report Wednesday, revealing that there were 767 boating fatalities nationwide in 2020, a 25.1 percent increase from 2019.
From 2019 to 2020, the total number of accidents increased 26.3 percent (4,168 to 5,265), and the number of non-fatal injured victims increased 24.7 percent (2,559 to 3,191). There is evidence that boating activity increased significantly during the pandemic, from reports of increased boat sales, insurance policies taken out, insurance claims, and calls for towing assistance. With the increased exposure (i.e., more boating hours), there was greater risk of deaths, injuries, and accidents. The Coast Guard is analyzing variables associated with boating activity to normalize this accident data.
Alcohol continued to be the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents in 2020, accounting for over 100 deaths, or 18 percent of total fatalities.
The report also shows that in 2020:
The fatality rate was 6.5 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels, the highest in the program’s recent history. This rate represents a 25 percent increase from last year’s fatality rate of 5.2 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels.
Property damage totaled about $62.5 million.
Operator inattention, operator inexperience, improper lookout, excessive speed, and machinery failure ranked as the top five primary contributing factors in accidents.
Capt. Scott Johnson, chief of the Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety at Coast Guard Headquarters, reflected on a number of cases where boaters had recently purchased the vessel involved in the incident, but had not taken many of the proper safety precautions before getting underway.
Where the cause of death was known, 75 percent of fatal boating accident victims drowned. Of those drowning victims with reported life jacket usage, 86 percent were not wearing a life jacket.
“It’s crucial for boaters to wear a life jacket at all times because it very likely will save your life if you enter the water unexpectedly,” said Johnson. “The Coast Guard reminds boaters to make sure that life jackets are serviceable, properly sized, and correctly fastened.”
Where boating instruction was known, 77 percent of deaths occurred on vessels where the operator had not received boating safety instruction. The Coast Guard recommends that all boaters take a boating safety course that meets the National Boating Education Standards prior to getting out on the water.
The most common vessel types involved in reported accidents were open motorboats, personal watercraft, and cabin motorboats. Where vessel type was known, the vessel types with the highest percentage of deaths were open motorboats (50 percent), kayaks (15 percent), and pontoons (9 percent).
The report is based off on incidents that resulted in at least one of the following criteria: death, disappearance, injury that required medical treatment beyond first aid, damages to the vessel(s) or other property that equaled or exceeded $2,000, or a loss of vessel.
The Coast Guard reminds all boaters to boat responsibly on the water: wear a life jacket, take a boating safety course, attach the engine cut-off switch, get a free vessel safety check, and boat sober.
“The Coast Guard thanks our boating safety partners,” said Johnson, “they continue to demonstrate a committed effort to reduce loss of life, injuries and property damage through education and enforcement.”
Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri
Riverboats at The Gateway Arch Focus On Dockside Entertainment.........
The past few years have been rough on the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch, as 2019 saw flooding keep the boats docked for four months and then the pandemic of 2020.
As other non-essential businesses did, the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch shut down completely at the onset of the pandemic, and gradually reopened to the public.
This year, the riverboats Tom Sawyer and the Becky Thatcher have resumed cruising this spring with some specialty cruises and dockside concerts on a new stage for crowds more comfortable hanging outside........
Mississippi River At East Cape Girardeau, Illinois
2 Years After Record Flooding, East Cape Girardeau Struggling........
Back in 2019, the neighborhoods of East Cape Girardeau, Illinois saw record breaking flooding which left dozens of residents without their homes.  THe entire town took a hit because of the flood.
Mayor Randy Morgan said that they have made very little progress as far as cleaning up is concerned, however, crews have cleaned up the sand bags and have partially rebuilt the village hall.
Home and property values have taken a hit and many residents have moved out of town.  Morgan says that the abandoned properties are privately owned, and is hoping they will get cleaned up soon........
