Reconnecting Rivers To Floodplains Key In Urban Areas........

Cora Island is a 1,400 acre section of former farmland located along the Missouri River.  It was made into an island by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who dug a channel in an effort to reconnect the Missouri River to it's floodplain.

The water along the river side of the island flows on towards the confluence with the Mississippi River, while the water in the Corps' channel calmly fills wetlands and copses of willow and cottonwood trees.

The Cora Island project is part of the Big Muddy Fish and Wildlife Refuge, a statewide flood control and environmental protection project managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at 17 locations along the Missouri River........

Missouri History

A Look At The Little River Drainage District........

While it may be hard to believe today, but there was a time when swamplands covered more than a million acres in the Missouri Bootheel area, which produced the \term "Swampeast Missouri"

According to Kenneth R. Olsen, a professor of soil science at the University of Illinois-Urbana, American river lowlands and swamps were considered to be wastelands that are of no value for development.

The Little River Drainage District is some 620,000 acres across seven Southeastern Missouri Counties.  Historian Frank Nickell says that if the  Little River Drainage District did not exist, the region would have reverted back to swampland........

Metro East Flooding

East St. Louis Residents Stuck In A Flood Plain........

The residents of an East St. Louis neighborhood say that they are living on a street that never dries.  Terrace Drive is located adjacent to Harding Ditch, which is a 100 year old drainage canal that stretches for miles before joining the Mississippi River.

Other nearby neighborhoods have been bought out by the government and the houses torn down.  The land that remains always seems to be underwater.  FEMA will not buy out Terrace Drive, however, as that cannot get the leaders of East St. Louis to approve the buyout.

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin toured the area back in April, and promised to dedicate resources and maintenance to help keep Harding Ditch clear.  No representatives from East St. Louis met with the Senator........

Boat Sales

Despite Backlogs, Shortages, Boat Sales Soaring........

According to preliminary data released by Statistical Surveys, there is a near-crazed demand for new boats.  With 31 states representing approximately 63 percent of the U.S. boating market, registrations were up 55 percent during March in the main powerboat categories and 34 percent on a year-over-year basis.

The comparisons to March 2020 may be a bit skewed because of the COVID-related shutdowns and work-from-home orders, however, they do reflect a pattern established over the past several months with no signs of slowing down.

Across the recreational boating industry, total registrations were up 44 percent year-over-year, with 46,407 boats sold.  For March, registrations for all categories tallied up to 22,238, a 67 percent jump over the same period last year........

Ohio River Near Brookport, Illinois

Former Lock & Dam 52 Property To Be Transferred To Metropolis-Massac Port Authority........

Later this year, the former Lock & Dam 52 property located along the Ohio River near Brookport, Illinois will be transferred to the Metropolis-Massac Port Authority.  The deed transfer will take place once the final contract for the dam demolition has been fulfilled.

Scott Garrett, the Metropolis-Massac Executive Director said that they have had their eyes on the Dam 52 property for quite some time.  THe port authority has been around since 2009, but has never had any tangible assets.

Once the port authority takes possession of the property, they will own 19.1 acres of land at Ohio River Mile Marker 938.9, with approximately 1,800 feet of river frontage.  THe board will consider lease options on parts of the property, but they are not interested in operating a riverport........

Norwegian May Avoid Florida Over Vaccination Checks........

On Thursday, Frank Del Rio, CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd announced that Florida's new law that prohibits businesses from asking whether employees or customers have been vaccinated against COVID-19  may cause the company to halt operations in Florida.

Del Rio says that if they cannot operate in the state of Florida for whatever reason, there are other states that Norwegian operates from.  He adds that they can operate out of the Caribbean for a ship that would have gone to Florida.

Last month, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed an executive order banning the use of COVID-19 passports in the state.  He says that a person's personal choice regarding vaccinations will be protected and no business or government entity will be able to deny you services based upon their decision........

One Night's Work

The Picture on this  Day in 2015 .... was sent to us by Capt'n Ken Longar who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis

Bill,

I just spent the afternoon riding up and down the river with my son. It put me in a reminiscent mood. This old photo is of my Dad, my Uncle Pam (Elsworth Black) AKA Blackie and I believe the guy on the left is Harvey Hatfield of Elsberry, MO- a true river rat. Harvey took his living from the river in a little fishing camp just out of Elsberry. My uncle Pam (Blackie) had a cabin just down stream from Hatfield's place that we got to in our old wooden boats with 5 HP or maybe a 7.5 HP outboard. As a little guy I thought it took for ever to get there.

The fish were one nights work with the trot lines. You know the type, free floating three bricks and oil can floats on one end. This photo pre-dates me I believe this was 1938-1940 but don't know for sure. I spent a lot of weekends playing on the bank, or in the river, It is where I learned to fish, swim, run a boat and most of all to love the Mississippi. I owe a lot to guys who worked harder on weekends than they did all week, just for the fun of it. When you think of a River Rat you just think of guys that look like these.

Mississippi Speed Record....

People have been setting and breaking the record for fastest paddle down the Mississippi River since 1937. The record is recognized by the Guinness World Records under the title “Fastest Time to Row the Length of the Mississippi River by a Team”. Most of the teams that have set the world record have done so in a canoe, though per the guidelines issued by Guinness a scull, rowing boat, kayak or canoe would be permissible.
The first time the record was set was in 1937. Joe Tagg, Gerald Capers and Charles Saunders paddled from Itasca to New Orleans in 56 days......click here to read more

Note.......

There are 2 different groups currently traveling down the Mississippi trying to break the speed record.   One passed thru he St. Louis area a few days ago.

Camp DuBois Will Come Alive This Weekend........

This year's second Camp DuBois Rendezvous will be held this weekend at Camp DuBois, which is a replica of the original encampment built in December 1803, near present day Wood River.

The Lewis and Clark Flotilla arrived in Wood River on December 12, 1803 and set up a campsite on high ground near the keel boat and wagon trail to Cahokia.  They Wintered at Camp DuBois for five months.  The current Camp DuBois was built in 2003 and is maintained by volunteers.

The May Rendezvous scheduled for this weekend is organized by re-enactors from the site.  During good weather, the Rendezvous will attract 20 - 40 volunteers, however, rain is in the forecast for the weekend........

Missouri River Near Rock Port, Missouri

Levee Project Gives Missouri River Room To Flood........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working on rebuilding Atchison County Levee L-536, which was breached during the flood of 2019.  They are not just repairing the damaged section, but instead, they are constructing a new levee set further inland to give the river more room to roam.

This change is historic, and has been the recommendation pushed by scientists and river experts for over a century.  THe move could be considered common sense, in that if a levee protecting farmland and an interstate is repeatedly overtopped, shouldn't it be moved back?

Typically that hasn't happened with this levee, nor the thousands of others along the Missouri River in the 10 states that make up the Missouri RIver Basin........

River History....

May 6, 1879 in River History

The Montana Riverboat was completed in Pittsburg, PA and turned her wheel for the first time. On June 22, 1884 she hit the Old Wabash Railroad Bridge on the Missouri River at St. Charles, Mo and sank.
At low water her hull can still be spotted a bit upriver from the current 370 bridge.

River History....

05 May, 2011 in River History

Flood of 2011

The Bird's Point Levee was breached by the US Army Corps of Engineers to save Cairo, Illinois from the rising waters during the 2011 floods.

Bird's Point Levee is a "setback levee." It was built during 1927 -31 away from the river between Bird's Point and New Madrid, Missouri. It was constructed with a low spot to a height that allowed water to spill over the top during a catastrophic flood, filling over 130,000 acres of land and saving Cairo, Illinois from flooding. The low spot was designed to fail during such a flood, but it held up, so the US Army Corps had to blow it up.

The plan has been on the books since 1928 and this was the second time in the levee's history that the levee has been opened up.

St. Charles County Parks

"Blueway Under Development at Riverside Landing........

Located at the junction of Dardenne Creek and the Mississippi River is one of St. Charles County’s newest parks – Riverside Landing. The park currently is closed for the construction of a variety of new and exciting amenities, including the first “blueway” for the county that will provide new opportunities for canoeing and kayaking on our beautiful creeks and rivers.

Called the Dardenne Creek Blueway, this water trail will connect nearly six miles of water from the City of St. Peters’ Lakeside 370 Park to Riverside Landing. St. Charles County Parks staff began planning for this waterway when the park was purchased in 2018; however, pollution – debris from trees and man-made trash – impeded the connection and flow between the creek and the river. Staff cleaned up the connection, and next will create a habitat to protect wildlife, plant vegetation along the banks of the creek to filter water, develop a long-term maintenance plan, and apply for grant funding to further maintain the blueway. The canoe/kayak landing and launch areas already are under construction at both Riverside Landing and Lakeside 370... click here to continue reading

Mark Twain Is Dressed Like a Banana

Photo courtesy Hannibal Parks and Recreation

Mark Twain wasn’t wearing a disguise but may not have been recognizable at his post on the new Hannibal riverfront. The statue was wearing a banana suit Saturday to mark the start of Skin Cancer Awareness month.

In a one-day guerrilla marketing initiative, sunscreen brand Sun Bum outfitted 50 famous statues (one in each state) with a banana suit.

“We look at a banana as the ideal protection messaging,” marketing vice president Russell Radebaugh of Sun Bum said. “It’s covered from head to toe, just like you should be. And since we are not covered head to toe, we need to protect ourselves with things like SPF or shade or sunglasses or other sorts of clothing. So we’ve kind of adopted [the banana] as a metaphor for us to promote education without using scare tactics.”

Representatives from Sun Bum had banana suits to give out on Saturday, along with free give-aways to urge the use of sunscreen to stop skin cancer.

Boat Retailer

MarineMax Purchased Cruisers Yachts........

MarineMax recently announced that they have purchased KCS International, the parent company of Cruisers Yachts for $63 million.  The 68 year old company is based in Oconto, Wisconsin.

Just last week, Cruisers announced that they had purchased the former Carver and Marquis facility, which is a 216,000 square foot, purpose-built manufacturing facility, which would expand the company's manufacturing capabilities considerably.

Cruisers Yachts already had strong ties to MarineMax, as it's dealer network included SkipperBud's and Silver Seas Yachts.  Both firms were acquired last year........

Malibu Posts Record Third Quarter.......

Malibu Boats has released the results of their fiscal third quarter of 2021, and it is one for the record books, with net sales coming in at $273.2 million, which is a 50 percent increase.

Net income ended up as $35.1 million, which is a 47.2 percent increase.  Gross profits were up significantly as well, increasing by 57 percent to $72 million.

Malibu attributes the strong third quarter to a favorable lineup of Malibu and Cobalt models, as well as an increase in production volume in the saltwater segment, mainly due to their acquisition of Maverick Boat Group.......

Ohio River Near Olmstead, Illinois

Riverbank Eroding, Landowners, Corps At Odds Over Cause........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and property owners along the Ohio River near Olmstead, Illinois both agree that there is riverbank erosion occurring, but they are at odds as to why it is happening.

According to resident and Air Force Veteran, Sandra Thornton claims that the replacement of two locks and dams with the Olmstead Lock and Dam has sped up the erosion.  Thornton says other factors including the placement of four large barge mooring cells, a relocated boat ramp and the propulsion systems of passing tows increase the erosion.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville DIstrict Commander Colonel Eric Crispino and his crew say that high water in 2018 and 2019 is the cause of erosion, and that was coincidental to the Olmstead Locks opening, which took place on September 6,  2018........

Missouri State Highway Patrol

News Release.....

May 3, 2021
EMPHASIS: May 22-28 Is National Safe Boating Week!

Colonel Eric T. Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, would like to stress the importance of safe boating by making the public aware of National Safe Boating Week, which takes place May 22-28, 2021. National Safe Boating Week is purposefully scheduled just prior to Memorial Day weekend, which many people consider the kickoff to the boating season.

Boaters are encouraged to make time for a thorough inspection of their boat prior to taking it out on the water this boating season. Weather, time, and other elements may affect the readiness of your boat. The Patrol’s marine operations troopers are available to inspect the required equipment on your boat, at your request, to make sure you’re in compliance with state law. To help facilitate these inspections, marine operations troopers will be at the following boat equipment inspection stations on Saturday, May 22, 2021... click here

Lake Michigan Near East Chicago, Illinois

Boat Capsized With 4 Aboard....  1 Still Missing....

Saturday afternoon at around 2:15 pm, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard were called out to Lake Michigan due to a report of a boat capsized near East Chicago Marine.

Reportedly, there were four people aboard the 16 foot pleasure boat when it capsized.  IDNR Officer Alex Neel says that three of the four men were able to put their life jackets on.

Two of the men were rescued from Lake Michigan by the Coast Guard after being spotted by a Chicago Fire Department helicopter.  A third man was picked up by another boater who happened to be passing by.  The fourth man remains missing and crews are searching for him........

Cruising News

Oceangoing Cruises Still Tied Up....  River Cruises Underway....

In early April, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updates their "Framework for Conditional Sailing Order" with new recommendations for travelers returning from cruise ships and river cruise ships worldwide.

In an article dated April 12, 2021, the CDC recommends that all people avoid traveling on cruise ships, including river cruises worldwide, due to the chance of getting COVID-19 on cruise ships is high since the virus seems to spread more easily aboard a close-quarters ship.

The article then goes on to list recommendations for people returning from cruises;  vaccinated passengers should be tested for COVID-19 between 3-5 days after a cruise, isolate if positive.  Regardless of test result, self monitor for 14 days.  Vaccinated passengers don't need to self-quarantine.

Passengers that are not fully vaccinated are recommended to follow the same testing protocols, however, they should self-quarantine for sever days after cruise travel even if you test negative.  If you don't get tested, you should self-quarantine for 10 days after cruise travel........

Students Celebrate Arbor Day By Planting A Tree On The Riverfront........

On Friday, several students from Holy Family Catholic Church and Stowell Elementary School teamed up to plant a swamp white oak tree along Hannibal/s recently revamped riverfront to celebrate National Arbor Day.

Also on hand to participate in the ceremony were representatives from the Hannibal Tree Board, Hannibal Parks and Recreation and rhea Missouri Department of Conservation.

According to Hannibal Tree Board President Kristy Trevethan, kids have traditionally planted trees in Hannibal to celebrate National Arbor Day.  The swamp white oak joins 11 other trees along the riverfront, seven birches and four sycamores.  These particular trees are known for their ability to withstand "getting their feet wet" during flooding........

New Study Looks At Preservation Methods For The Gateway Arch........

Over the years, the Gateway Arch has lost some of it's silvery luster, slowly being replaced with a dull patina caused by pollution, salt, body oils and graffiti.

The good news is that a group of national nonprofit organizations and preservationists have suggested a few ways that the National Park Service can start to clean the Arch's stainless steel skin.

A study looked at the use of a variety of methods for cleaning the Arch, including the use of lasers, drones and rappelling, as well as more conventional use of cleaning agents.......

Detroit River Near Grosse Ile, Michigan

240 Pound Sturgeon Amongst Largest Caught, Recorded........

Last week, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service crew caught a 240 pound sturgeon.  It is among the largest ever caught in the United States.  The fish was 6 feet, 10 inches long, with a girth of close to 4 feet.  The sturgeon is a native, and threatened, species in Michigan.

The sturgeon was caught by a crew of 3 in a boat near Grosse Ile in the Detroit River.  In addition to the essential photos, the crew measured and tagged the female fish prior to releasing it.  Before catching the monster, the only thing they caught was a 5 pound bucket.

The scientists are estimating that the sturgeon had hatched in the Detroit River some time during the 1920s.........

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District Commander Colonel Steven Sattinger says that Quincy's namesake boat will be around, as it will be pushing the Quad Cities' heavy lift crane wherever it is needed for lock and dam maintenance........
