Missouri Dept. of Conservation congratulates Anthony Schnur, Jr. on reeling in a record-breaking 32-pound, 10-ounce longnose gar from Table Rock Lake. Holding the gar is local fishing guide and Schnur’s girlfriend, Cindy Dennison. The latest catch is the fourth state record fish recorded for 2021.

Man Fishing In Memory Of Friend Catches Record Gar........

Earlier this month, Anthony Schnur Jr. received word that his good friend of 30 years had just passed away.  He was preparing for a fishing trip to Table Rock Lake when he learned of his friend's passing.  His friend's wife had one request for Schnur, catch a fishing his name.

On April 7th, Schnur caught a fish that would honor his friend in a big way.  Using a pole and line, Schnur caught a record breaking longnose gar, which tipped the scales at 32 pounds, 10 ounces.

Schnur says that he hopes to mount his record breaking gar in his friend's memory.  He added that he believes that it would be a beautiful way to honor his friend........

Boat Manufacturer

Marine Products Numbers Up Across The Board........

During the first quarter of fiscal 2021, Marine Products Corp. sold more boats for more money compared to the same quarter of last year.  This resulted in a 33 percent increase in net sales to $59.1 million.

MPC, the parent company of Chaparral, Robalo and Vortex boats stated that the main driver behind the increases was an 18 percent increase in the number of units sold, combined with an average price that was 15.5 percent higher that last year.

Gross profit increased 52.5 percent to $18.4 million, and gross margin rose 23.6 percent from 20.5 percent last year, MPC reported, pointing to increases in production and it's model mix........

French Builder Adds Hydrogen Power Generator To Catamarans........

Fountaine Pajot, the La Rochelle, France-based manufacturer of sailing and power catamarans recently announced their first use of alternative power sources with the integration of a hydrogen power generator aboard their Samana 59 sailboat.

The manufacturer's "Odyssea 2024" development plan pairs the Samana 59 with a fuel cell system from EODev, which utilizes the same Toyota-based modules that power ongoing Yanmar projects.  Yanmar is a boat propulsion manufacturer.

Fountaine Pajot CEO Romain Motteau says that the shift towards fossil fuel free boating is part of the company's plans for achieving zero carbon emissions in both production and boat usage by 2050........

Issues Still Being Sorted Out On The Riverfront........

As work continues along the Hannibal Riverfront, Hannibal's Director of Central Services, Andy Dorian says that there are a lot of things going on with the riverfront at this time.

Dorian said that an adjustment is necessary to the boat gangways, as the far gangway goes underwater too early.  He adds that they will have to make an adjustment on how they pivot that to the higher sidewalk, and perhaps make the first dock the ADA dock, and maybe add an additional gangway in the future.

Dorian says that another gangway issue is the one that leads out tot he actual boat ramp.  He adds that they are working on that, as it will ultimately go underwater, but at 15 to 16 feet, it should not be submerged........

Mississippi Speed Record........

Hi Bill.

I don't know if you are aware, but 4 guys in a canoe are going to try to set the speed record paddling the Mississippi from MN to New Orleans. They may be through pool 26 sometime after the 7th of May. The details are on FB under Mississippi Speed Record. One of the guys, Adam Mocht is a good friend of ours. We are going to try to follow them through the pool. Some of your subscribers may be interested. They have a Garmin site set up to track their progress..

Dredging Update:
Dock 5 dredging is complete. This dock is one of the hardest docks to move and to dredge. Because there is no room to bring the barge into the area all the dredge mud must be dumped into a dump truck. It was then dumped at the front of the harbor by the road. When it is dry enough it will be spread out and grass seed will be planted!

New Boat Sales Remain Strong In 2021........

According to the New Powerboat Registrations Report from the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the retail unit sales of new powerboats were up 34 percent during February 2021 compared to the same period in 2020.

The data reveals that the total new boat sales are averaging 31,000 units per month since the summer of 2020.  The above normal demand has been attributed to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Vicky Yu, the senior director of business intelligence for the NMMA says that the inventory levels are the lowest they have ever been, with boats selling as soon as they hit the showroom floor........

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker says that more than 500 Illinois workers will have access to union jobs in the next phases in the port's construction.

Pritzker went on to say that the Cairo Port District represents the best of Rebuild Illinois, which is not only investing in infrastructure, but jobs and economic prosperity for a region that has been left out for far too long.........

Happy Spring!

According to Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin, the majority of the costs incurred during the 2019 floods was related to the construction of a floodwall through the center of town.

News Release From BoatUS

ANNAPOLIS, Md., April 26, 2021 – The nation’s biggest recreational boating safety event of the year, National Safe Boating Week, is right around the corner, May 22–28. The annual event helps remind boaters to keep boating safety front and center all season long. How can you be a safety hero aboard your boat? Here are three tips from the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water.

1. The best life jacket is the one you will wear, meaning one that’s comfortable. There are many lightweight inflatable life jackets that fit the bill. Check the jacket’s label to ensure it’s approved for your type of boating. If the kids are visiting, don’t be tempted to put a child in an ill-fitting adult life jacket. The BoatUS Foundation’s Life Jacket Loaner program for kids offers a free and easy way to borrow an infant, child or teen life jacket for the day or weekend with locations at nearly 600 marinas, boat clubs, and other waterfront locations across the country.

2. Learn from what the U.S. Coast Guard boating safety reports tell us: Operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed, and alcohol rank as the top five primary contributing factors in accidents. This summer, recreational boaters can focus on these factors by putting down the cellphone, practicing using S.C.A.N. procedures to avoid distracted boating, taking a free boating safety course, slowing down, and driving more defensively, especially in congested boating areas. Alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, so save the celebration for after the boat is safely tied up for the night. Boat operators also need to recognize they are responsible for the safety of their guests, including inebriated ones.

3. Remember to wear an engine cutoff switch if your boat is less than 26-feet, traveling on plane or above displacement speed. Some exemptions apply to this new rule went into effect April 1, including if the vessel has an enclosed helm. Engine cutoff switches can prevent boat strike injuries after an operator has been ejected from the vessel or displaced from the helm.

Lake Of The Ozarks

The Bagnell Dam Was Completed 90 Years Ago........

On April 26, 1931, the Bagnell Dam was put into operation and started generating electricity for the first time.  Several weeks later, on May 30, 1931, the Lake of the Ozarks was officially opened to boat traffic.

Four months later, workers inside the Bagnell Dam's powerhouse tripped the switches to generate current from it's large hydroelectric generators.  High-power lines strung through densely forested hilly terrain carried power to a feeder station in Wellston and to present day Park Hills in Missouri's old Lead Belt.

Soon after the lake was opened to boat traffic, a few rough fishing camps popped up along it's shores.  It would take close to three decades for the 60,000 acre reservoir to become the bustling summer playground it is now........

Happy Spring!

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake has announced that they will be suspending the collection of fees at all boat ramps, the John F. Spalding swimming beach and the David C.
Happy Spring!

"Tug pushing big bargeline just passed. Everything normal except for one bright pink barge! It's heading towards Alton and pinky is on the mo side of line"

Flooding Solutions Remain Elusive........

The Flood of 2019 may be long over, but it is still fresh in the mind of federal and state officials, as well as landowners near the Missouri River, who are looking for ways to mitigate flooding in the future.

A community in Northwestern Missouri thinks that moving levees farther back from the Missouri River banks, giving it room to swell during rainy years would be a good solution.

A bipartisan group of legislators from Missouri and other states along the river believe that the answer lays with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers using the authority Congress granted them to reduce flooding along the lower Missouri River........

Diverting The River May Save Receding Coast........

In two year's time, the Mid-Barataria Diversion, a huge ecosystem engineering experiment 50 years in the making and costing upwards of $50 billion may finally come to being.

If all goes to plan, engineers will blow open a nearby Mississippi River levee, allowing the Mississippi River to carry sediment and sand from the river to the bay, where it will be deposited, helping to restore lost land.

Researchers are predicting that the diversion could move enough sediment to bury Manhattan Island under 3 meters of sediment and create at lease 54 square kilometers of new land........

Chicago River At Chicago, Illinois

Chicago Harbor Lock Opened For The Season........

On April 15th, the Chicago Harbor Lock opened for the shipping season following a five month closure, during which crews reconstructed a part of the north chamber wall.  Similar closures are slated to take place during the next four winters.

These closures are part of a larger rehabilitation project being carried out because of the age of the 600 by 80 foot lock, which was constructed between 1936 and 1938 by the Sanitary District of Chicago as part of the plan to reverse the flow of the Chicago River from flowing into Lake Michigan to flowing away from it.

Tim Kroll, chief of the U.S> Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District says that crews performed exploratory demolition and interim repairs, and the wall resurfacing project will continue over the next two wingers, into the spring of 2024........

Spring has sprung and that means it is time to pull your boat out from it's wintry slumber and hit the water, right?  Not so fast, Mr./Mrs. Boater.  There are many things involved in preparing a boat to get out on the water not only for the sake of the vessel, but for the safety of those onboard as well.

FEMA Approved Funding For Riverview Wall Repairs........

Officials recently announced that funding for the Alton Riverview Wall repair has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of the 2019 disaster declaration.

Bob Barnhart, the City of Alton Public Works Director says that it is a relief to get the funding for the damages to the Riverview Wall.  Barnhart added that they are eager to get the wall restored back to per-disaster condition.

FEMA has approved work totaling $5,012,240, of which FEMA will reimburse the City of Alton $3,759,186,  A mitigation project costing $581,532, that will prevent future re-occurrences is included in the funding.  That project involves the installation of a stormwater collection and diversion system........

River History....

23 April 1904 in River History

The first trolley crossed the Old St. Charles Bridge carrying dignitaries. Construction on the bridge began in August, 1902 with the sinking of the piers. Construction was completed in the spring of 1904 in time for the world's fair in St. Louis. The bridge was a combination highway and streetcar bridge. The streetcar station at the western terminus of the bridge still stands at 2nd and Adams in St. Charles. It was operated as toll by the St. Charles and St. Louis County Bridge Company until December 1931. At that time it was incorporated in the state highway system as part of U.S. Route 40. Tolls and trolleys ceased in January 1932

Ohio River Near Louisville, Kentucky

Belle Of Louisville Cruising Despite Financial Shortfalls........

The 107 year old Belle of Louisville is once again plying the Ohio River, however, the steamer's operators say that without additional funding in the amount of $4.1 million spread over the next five years, continuing operations will be difficult.

Belle of Louisville CEO Krista Snider recently presented a request for funding to the Louisville Metro Council budget committee meeting, which included $725,000 in emergency funding for the year, in addition to the $528,000 the council previously earmarked for the 2020-21 fiscal year.

$201,000 of the requested emergency relief is due to shipyard-related labor costs, which are not able to be booked to the capital budget.  Snider says that the Department of Homeland Security requires watches to be kept 24 hours per day.  An additional $525,000 in losses was due to COVID-19........

River Destinations:  Chicago

Take A Fireboat Tour Of The Chicago River, Lake Michigan........

The Fred A Busse, also known as Engine 41 is a former fireboat that served Chicago from 1937 to 1981.  At one time, Engine 41 was the largest diesel powered fireboat in the world, and it responded to many emergencies, including huge fires along the Chicago River.

These days, the Fred A Busse is owned by two Navy Veterans and friends who have converted the fireboat into a tour boat.  There is a small museum on board that features artifacts and photos of the vessel in action during it's years of service.

The Fred A. Busse offers many cruises, including sunset and fireworks cruises, but the Historical and Architectural Cruise starts on Lake Michigan before traversing the Chicago Locks onto the Chicago River, where passengers will get an up-close look at the breathtaking Chicago skyline........

Happy Spring!

Arch Lights To Go Dark Next Month........

Next month, the Gateway Arch will look a bit different at nighttime, as the National Park Service will be leaving the lights off at the Arch from May 1 - 14 because of bird migration.

Tarona Armstrong, Deputy Superintendent, Gateway Arch National Park says that after spending the winter months in the south, birds will be making their way home, and each migration season, spring and fall, they turn off the upwards lighting on the Arch's exterior to avoid possibly disorienting the birds migrating at night.

The exterior lighting will be turned back on starting on the evening of May 15th.  THe lights were previously turned off in September 2020........

River History....

22 April 2010 in River History

At Dam 25 near Winfield, Mo a large steel dam gate some 100-feet long, failed when the chain mechanism that raises and lowers it broke at its connection point. The failure was attributed to a faulty mechanical-electric limit switch. It occurred while lock maintenance personnel were lubricating the dam’s gate chains.

Carlyle Lake

Go Sailing With Carlyle Sailing Association........

Whether you are an experienced sailor or interested in learning how to sail, the Carlyle Sailing Association has just what you need to get out onto the water.

If you are new to sailing, Carlyle Sailing Association, a not-for-profit sailing organization, can help get you on the water.  According to Ted Beier, a member of the CSA board of directors and race program director, you don't have to own a boat or know how to sail.

Beier adds that CSA can supply a boat and teach you how to sail.  He says that they can get you started, and then you will be ready to enjoy sailing on your own.

Carlyle Lake is approximately an hour east of St. Louis and is reportedly one of the best sailing lakes in the Midwest, offering great sailing for newbies and old salts alike.......

From Wikipedia:

Lake Havasu is a large reservoir formed by Parker Dam on the Colorado River, on the border between San Bernardino County, California and La Paz County, Arizona. Lake Havasu City sits on the Arizona (eastern) side of the lake with its Californian counterpart of Havasu Lake directly across the lake. The reservoir has an available capacity of 619,400 acre feet (764,000,000 m3). The concrete arch dam was built by the United States Bureau of Reclamation between 1934 and 1938. The lake's primary purpose is to store water for pumping into two aqueducts. Prior to the dam construction, the area was home to the Mojave Indians. The lake was named (in 1939) after the Mojave word for blue.[1] In the early 19th century, it was frequented by beaver trappers. Spaniards also began to mine the areas along the river.

Riverview Dr. Repairs Await FEMA Decision.........

The discussions between the City Alton and the Federal Emergency Management Agency continues, as the City is looking to get reimbursed some of the cost of repairing the wall and road as well as the surrounding area, noting that it was heavy rainfall that caused the issue.

According to Alton Public Works Director Bob Barnhart, the FEMA process is slow.  He adds that he area is still closed off to the public and is being monitored for any changes in stability.

Barnhart said that if FEMA doesn't come through, there are still other options the city pursue to get the area repaired........

America's Central Port Has Upgraded Buildings........

America's Central Port, located in Granite City, Illinois, just upstream from St. Louis has renovated and upgraded two of their buildings for potential commercial tenants.  Both of the buildings are relics of the site's past history as a military complex.

Building 202 was a former U.S. Army Steam Plant, and prior to this round of renovations ha had asbestos and lead containing materials removed, as well as a new roof and interior demolition.  Building 203 was a former locomotive repair shop, and recently underwent Phase 1 reconstruction that included roof replacement, structural repairs and other improvements........

We have the foundation built!!! Unfortunately, since lumber prices are so high right now we are putting a hold on the build. Hoping all of this ends soon so we can get back to it.

Happy Spring!
