It's a shot of the Golden Eagle Ferry taken in August of 1971, back when it was a paddlewheel and the automobiles entered and exited on the ramp located midship.
Looks like the ferry is at the top end of the Dardenne Slough headed towards the ferry landing on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River.

Added Sunday Illinois River At Kampsville, Illinois The Kampsville Ferry Has Reopened........
The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that the Kampsville Ferry has resumed operations after being temporarily shut down due to icy conditions along the Illinois River.
The Kampsville Ferry takes Illinois 100, which is part of the Great River Road, across the Illinois River between Calhoun and Greene Counties.
IDOT officials say that they will be keeping an eye on the Illinois River conditions between Brussels and Grafton, as there is still significant amounts of ice upstream. IDOT adds that there may be more temporary closures for icy conditions........

Added Sunday Creve Coeur Lake Polar Plungers Raised $75K For Special Olympics........
On Saturday, the weather was rather nice for the Polar Plungers to take a quick dip in Creve Coeur Lake in Maryland Heights, Mo to raise funds for Special Olympics Missouri.
Better than $75,000 was raised for the Special Olympics athletes. According to News 4's Julia Avery, the Polar Plungers were reporting that the lake water still feels like February........

Added Sunday Lake Of The Ozarks Amren: Schedule Dock Inspections Now........
Even as some Lake of the Ozarks dock owners are dealing with the damage caused by the big freeze and thaw in addition to rapidly lowered lake levels, Amren Missouri is recommending that all dock owners schedule dock inspections now, before the summer season arrives.
According to Bryan Vance, supervisor of shoreline management for Amren, there is nothing more important than safety at the Lake of the Ozarks. He says that the warmer temperatures are perfect for having a trusted dock builder and a qualified electrician check the dock over.
Vance says that there are many first time dock owners this year and they will be experiencing their first spring at the lake. He added that dock safety is a crucial part of having a home on the lake........

Mississippi River Flooding Outlook NWS: Flood Outlook Close To Normal For This Year........
On Thursday, the National Weather Service released the second of three planned Spring Flood and Water Resource Outlooks for 2021, and they are predicting a near normal risk of flooding this year.
THe NWS says that the Mississippi River is flowing at near-normal rates for this time of year and the threat of moderate or greater flooding is not substantial, and in many places, the threat of significant flooding is well below the historical average for this time of year.
According to the NWS, soils are drier from Minnesota and the Dakotas through western Kansas, meaning that the Upper Mississippi River Basin will have some additional water storage capability this spring, which will deter flooding........

Mississippi River At Caruthersville, Missouri Barge Strike Closed Bridge, Reopened After Inspection........
The Pemiscot County Sheriff's Office reports that around 10 am Friday morning, some barges struck the Interstate 155 Mississippi River bridge at Caruthersville, Missouri.
Barge traffic in the area was stopped and the U.S. Coast Guard was alerted.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says that the Interstate 155 Bridge was reopened shortly after noon on Friday after inspectors were finished checking the span over........

Boat Sales Close To 320,000 Boats Sold During 2020........
The National Marine Manufacturers Association has released their New Powerboat Registration report, which reveals that the retail sales of new boats reached close to 320,000 boats sold last year, which is an increase of 13 percent over 2019, and the highest level since 2009.
THe NMMA notes that all powerboat segments were up between 8 and 22 percent. Vicky Yu, the NMMA director of business intelligence says that new boat sales continued to be elevated during the latter half of 2020, up some 40 percent September through December.
Yu adds that the increased demand for new boats has resulted in a record year in sales for the recreational boating industry as the American public sought ways to spend time on the water with their families.........

Missouri Fishing News Trout Season Opening Monday........
Officials have announced that at 6:30- am Monday, March 1, Missouri's catch-and-keep trout season will be opening at Roaring River State Park near Cassville, Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon and Montauk State Park near Salem.
Trout tags may be purchased at the state park stores.
Many Missouri state outdoorsmen consider the start of the catch-and-keep trout season to be the unofficial start of spring. The catch-and-keep season will run through October 31........

Boat Sales Couple Purchasing Boat Online Found Themselves Scammed.........
Rachel Johnson figured she and her family would be back on the water on the weekends, soaking up the sun and camping out. This year Johnson and her husband decided they wanted to purchase a new boat.
Johnson says that an interesting deal popped up on Craigslist; the boat was exactly what they were looking for. The seller said that a third party shipping company in O'Fallon, Missouri would be processing the $13,000 sale and deliver the boat to the Johnson home.
The Johnsons are farmers and have dealt with similar arrangements in purchasing big machinery. Between emails, the invoice and the company's website, Johnson said there were no red flags until she was unable to contact the company and the boat did not show up.........

Lake Of The Ozarks Dock Damage Revealed By Thawing Ice........
It's been nearly a decade since the Lake of the Ozarks has frozen across the main channel. Now, the thaw is on and the docks are beginning to reveal their damage as the ice melts away.
Docks have been broken away from the shoreline and set adrift near the 36 Mile Marker, as well as in Buck Creek Cove. Dock companies have been swamped with an unprecedented number of calls for assistance.
THe most common types of damage reported has less to do with the ice and more to do with the low water levels. Amren has been lowering the lake levels to meet power demands, and quickly lowering the lake level puts tension on the dock cables........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois Corps Crews Welcome The Ice Departure.........
Russell Errett, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydraulic Engineer in the Water Management Office says that he has not seen ice forming along the Mississippi River near the Melvin Price Locks and Dam in several years.
Errett states that when ice spans the Mississippi River channel, it creates issues for Lock and Dam crews and navigators as they lock through. He adds that river traffic moves through St. Louis year round moving goods for refineries and other businesses.
Errett explains that when ice flows through the Lock and Dam, it constantly has to be cleared to allow navigation to proceed. He noted that occasionally, ice will accumulate in front of a barge, refreeze and reduce the depth of water the vessel can move along the river........

This week is National Invasive Species Awareness Week, and the American Boat and Yacht Council has released an animated video to raise awareness of the threat Aquatic Invasive Species present to the boating industry and what can be done to limit their spread.
Aquatic Invasive Species can cause damage to ecosystems, negatively affect fishing as well as the future of the boating lifestyle. AIS contamination can cause a variety of damage to boats and components.
Invasive plant life cha foul propellers, seize impellers and cause bilge pump failures. Mussels can attach themselves to boats, negatively affecting performance, or attach to engines and water lines causing system failures.........

The Gulf Of Mexico Near Corpus Christi, Texas Sea Tow Helped Save Cold-Stunned Turtles........
During the recent freeze, crews with Sea Tow Corpus Christi rescued over 1,000 turtles that ended up stunned by the frigid temperatures. All together, some 8,000 turtles had been saved by Texas volunteers.
Captain Brandon Upton, owner of Sea Tow Corpus Christi says that while boaters can easily call for assistance when they need help, the turtles cannot. He added that the turtles needed help and they did what they could to save as many as they could.
Crews made up of Sea Tow captains, volunteers and staff from Padre Island National Seashore started the turtle rescues last week using Sea Tow air boats to access the shallows that prop driven boats can't get to........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Looking Back At The Groundbreaking For The Downtown Floodwall........
On February 24, 1959, ground was broken for the construction of the floodwall along the St. Louis Riverfront. Officials and the public turned out for the event that kicked off the $130 million project that would protect St. Louis from the Mississippi River.
The floodwall consists of a series of earthen levees, concrete floodwalls, pumping stations and sewers that offer protection for 3,420 acres of riverfront from a flood state of 52 feet.
The extensive flood protection system extends 11 miles, stretching from Maline Creek to the foot of Chippewa Street. The floodwall was put to the test in 1993, when floodwaters crested at 49.6 feet........

Ohio RIver History Icy Conditions Return Along The River........
After several years of relatively mild winters, it seems that icy times have returned. Unlike the Upper Mississippi River, the Ohio River has not been well equipped to deal with icy conditions, especially during the steamboat era.
Records indicate that one of the worst examples of ice blockages occurred during the 1850s when the Ohio River completely froze forcing the river to remain closed for 57 days.
Most river historians will agree that the most damaging ice situation of all time along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers occurred during the winter of 1918. As most of steamboats were still wooden hulled, the sharp ice would practically saw off the hulls at the water line. Some 36 vessels were sunk or destroyed........

Bill, My family and I go to the boat show every year. This picture is from the 2012 boat show, and includes my daughters Emily and Bailey, and our friend Hailey at the Progressive booth. After many years of talking about buying a boat, we finally pulled the trigger and bought a 2012 Yamaha Limited S. My wife was on a girls weekend out of town at the time, and when I told her I bought the boat, she didn't believe me as she would have rather opted for a pool in the backyard. We now kid around about naming the boat Mom's Pool. Looking forward to the 2014 show, and possibly a new boat. Perhaps we will name the new boat Kids College Fund. -Dan Bloomfield

Prior to the Great Flood of 1993, the City of Grafton supported a variety of industry. After the flood, the city has remade itself as a tourist destination. Now, a project that will honor the town's history is nearly complete..
Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin says that there will be a variety of displays that will lay out the city's heritage in fishing, quarrying, and boat building. The museum is slated to open in early April........

Upper Mississippi River Upper Mississippi River Watershed Study Requested.......
On Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be discussing a proposed study of the Upper Mississippi River Watershed with officials from five states.
Christine Favilla, Three Rivers Project Coordinator of the Sierra Club says that they need a watershed study that will work across the federal and state agencies to guide actions and policies in a coordinated manner.
Favilla says that every time the Mississippi River floods, it is like a war between neighbors. We are basically using floodwalls and levees to throw the Mississippi River at each other.........

The Great River Road Awarded A Federal Highway Honor........
The Federal Highway Administration recently named the Illinois Great River Road an "All-American Road". The route is one of 49 roadways across 28 states to be awarded new roadway designations as part of the America's Byways collection.
The Great River Road, which includes the local Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byways, meanders along the Mississippi River for some 3,000 miles in 10 states, starting at Lake Itasca in Minnesota and ending at the Gulf of Mexico.
The Meeting of the Great River Road National Scenic Byway was awarded this honor for it's historical and cultural qualities. The 33 mile road runs from Hartford to just north of Grafton........

Mississippi River History A Look Back At The Eads Tunnel........
The Eads Bridge has been a St. Louis riverfront icon since it's completion in 1874. It's construction was full of ingenuity, danger and political drama. Another less visible part of the Eads Bridge project has quite an interesting story to tell.
Political maneuvering by rival river crossing interests placed a stipulation on where the Eads Bridge could connect on the Illinois side of the river, a seemingly impossible location directly across from St. Louis' bustling downtown because it would require the acquisition of depot-grounds and the construction of a road through the city fatally expensive.
The move was intended to kill the project, however, the bridge company came up with a brilliant plan: Build a tunnel under the city of St. Louis instead of a road through the city. The tunnel project encountered many obstacles, but was eventually completed. The tunnel is in use to this day as part of the Metro Link system........

Mississippi River At Granite City, Il Locks No.27 Main Chamber Reopens To Traffic........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that the main chamber at Mississippi River Chain of Rocks Locks No.27 near Granite City, Illinois reopened on Friday, February 19th. It had closed on February 1st for maintenance and repairs.
Lockmaster Jeremy Garzia reports that Corps crews made up of between 5 and 10 people at a time worked to replace the chains on the lift gate, despite working in icy and bitterly cold conditions.
While the work was being completed, the auxiliary lock was open to traffic. Garzia says that despite the conditions, there were usually three or four tows waiting in either direction waiting to pass through the lock........

Mississippi River At Keokuk, Iowa Lock And Dam No.19 Site Of Asian Carp Deterrent........
The U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center are partnering up to test a new Asian carp deterrent at Lock and Dam No.19 at Keokuk, Iowa.
The new deterrent system is an underwater Acoustic Deterrent System. According to Marybeth Brey the head USGS research fish biologist on the project says that the idea is to drive away the Asian carp without disrupting the behavior of native fish.
Brey says that the goal is to find a combination of frequencies and decibel levels in the hearing range of Asian carp, but less so in the hearing range of native fish. Asian carp are more sensitive to higher frequencies than many of the native species, so researchers will use that to their advantage.........

Asian Carp Update Researcher Proposes Solution To Asian Carp Issues........
Asian carp have been a problem in the Missouri, Mississippi and Illinois Rivers for quite some time, however, a University of Missouri researcher wants to solve that problem by turning the fish into a fish powder.
Mark Morgan, an associate professor at the University of Missouri's School of Natural Resources says that there are people around the world dying of malnutrition each day, and he has a product that is readily available with plenty of protein and iron.
Morgan and his team has come up with a way to pulverize the fish into a fine powder that doesn't require refrigeration or freezing. Once vacuum packed it has a long shelf life........

Boat Show News Orlando Boat Show Slated For March........
The Marine Industry Association of Central Florida has announced that the Orlando Boat Show will be returning March 5-7 as an in-person show at the Orange County Convention Center. Last year's show was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The MIACF announced that there will be some 80 exhibitors displaying close to 500 boats ranging from pontoon and deckboats to center consoles flats boats and surf boats.
Boat manufacturers intend to offer show-only incentives such as service packages, extended warranties, waived dockage, as well as enhanced electronics and accessory packages........

While most in-person boat shows have been called off due to the COVID-19 outbreak, dealers have been searching for ways to generate leads during the prime boat sales season.
Enter Level 5 Advertising, who has created an online virtual boat show platform and connected several dealers in multiple markets to help them present their wares to potential boat buyers.
In both the Cincinnati and Minneapolis markets, dealers have reported record-breaking sales combined with significantly reduced boat show costs. Through Level 5's program, the dealers drove traffic into the showrooms, where they offered free parking, free drinks, private appointments and a safe, clean environment to sell boats........

Detroit River Near Detroit, Michigan Stranded Dog Rescued After Four Days On Ice........
Hospital workers says that a resilient dog is recovering at an animal hospital in Detroit, Michigan after being stranded for four days on the icy Detroit River. Patricia Trevino says that it is an amazing story of survival.
Reportedly, the dog was stranded on the icy Detroit River since Wednesday and remained there for four days until it's rescue from Mud island on Saturday.
Trevino says that a coyote came off Mud Island and chased the dog further out on the Detroit River. Trevino adds that she and her team watched for several days hoping that the dog would find it's way back to safety........

Ohio River At Brookport, Illinois The U.S. 45 Ohio RIver "Brookport" Bridge Has Reopened........
Officials have announced that the U.S. 45 Ohio River "Brookport" Bridge spanning the Ohio River between Paducah, Kentucky and Brookport, Illinois has been reopened to traffic.
The span had been closed since February 10th because of icing along the metal roadway decking. Temperatures above freezing Sunday morning have melted the remaining ice from the bridge decking. The span reopened to traffic shortly after 2 pm Sunday.
Also known as the Brookport Bridge and the Irvin S. Cobb Bridge, the U.S. 45 Ohio RIver Bridge consists of 10 spans and carries approximately 5,000 vehicles across the Ohio River each day. The 5,385 foot long bridge opened to traffic in 1929........
