Added Sunday Illinois River Near Meredosia, Illinois A Barge Worker Fell Into The River.........
Thursday evening, a man was pulled from the Illinois River at Meredosia after falling into the river from a barge. According to officials with Morgan County, Illinois, the unidentified barge worker fell into the river around 9:30 pm and was quickly pulled back onto the barge. Sheriff Mike Carmody reports that the man was treated by Meredosia emergency responders........

Even though there are no solid indicators of spring flooding occurring this year, you may want to prepare for the possibility now. The experts recommend looking into flood insurance no matter where you live.
Residents living in communities participating in the National Flood Insurance Program may purchase federally backed flood insurance, or you can contact your local insurance agent.
Illinois' largest disaster in 2019 was the flooding that affected some 33 counties. While there is a possibility that it could occur again, Weather Spotter Facilitator John Nell says that current information shows the heavy precipitation will fall in the Ohio and Tennessee River valleys........

Added Sunday Missouri River Near Jefferson City, Missouri Officials Are Watching The Ice Jam As Record Low River Levels Occur.........
Thanks to unusually cold temperatures and plenty of ice and snow over the past two weeks, an ice jam has formed along the Missouri River at Jefferson City, Missouri.
The National Weather Service has been keeping an eye on the accumulation and considering what could happen as warmer weather starts to melt what is left of the Arctic blast that froze the Midwest.
Ice jams block the flow of a river and may cause flooding in the surrounding areas. Melting ice and snow cause the river to rise, breaking up the top ice layers. The ice then travels downstream, where it collects and gets caught up on the bends and curves of the river, causing narrow passageways that interrupt the river's natural flow........

Added Sunday Boat Gear Manufacturer Garmin Released Fourth Quarter, Year End Results.......
Garmin Ltd. recently released the results for their fourth quarter and their fiscal year which ended on December 26, 2020. Total revenue for the fourth quarter was $1.35 billion, up 23 percent over the fourth quarter of 2019.
Gross margin for the quarter was 58.5 percent, compared to 58 percent posted in the fourth quarter of 2019. Operating income was $371 million, increasing 34 percent over the prior year.
2020 marked the fifth consecutive year of increasing revenue and operating income growth. Garmin posted record consolidated revenue of $4.19 billion, an 11 percent increase over fiscal 2019. Record operating income of $1.05 billion, an 11 percent gain over the prior year........

River Shipping News Ice Shutting Down Waterways........
Throughout the month of February, there have been multiple winter storms that have pummeled the mid-section of the continental United States and to top it off, a polar vortex has swept down from the north, bringing with it icy conditions, and causing power outages.
River shipping has been affected by the frigid conditions. Along the Illinois River, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has instituted width restrictions at Lagrange, Peoria, Starved Rock and Marseilles Locks, reducing tow sizes to six barges.
Along the Missouri River, ice floes have been reported as far south as St. Joseph. According to the Corps, this has not happened since 1989. In St. Louis, the arctic temps, snow and ice have shut down all fleet activity in the St. Louis Harbor........

Bald Eagles Mississippi River at The Riverbend........
Area resident's eyes are on the skies as the experts from the Great Rivers and Routes are expecting upwards of 1,000 bald eagles are migrating to the Riverbend region, where they will reclaim their winter roosts along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byways.
Bald eagles can be viewed across the Alton Bridge on Riverlands Way, Grafton, Illinois, Pere Marquette State Park, Portage Des Sioux, the Great River Road between Alton and Grafton and all around the Melvin Price Locks and Dam at Alton, Illinois.
Pelicans can also be spotted throughout the Riverbend region along the Mississippi River and nearby small lakes.........

Boat Show News The 2021 Atlantic City Boat Show Has Been Cancelled........
The National Marine Manufacturers Association has announced that they have cancelled this year's Progressive Insurance Atlantic City Boat Show. The show had already been postponed from February to April, 2021.
After examining all possible ways to hold the show while continuing to follow guidance from state and local authorities and the Atlantic City Convention Center, officials decided that canceling the 2021 boat show would be the best course of action.
Frank Hugelmeyer, president of the NMMA says that even though they have canceled the 2021 winter boat shows, they fully expect to resume their entire boat show schedule beginning in September 2021........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Alton To Break Ground On A New Splash Pad........
Within the next month, the City of Alton will begin construction on a community splash pad that is expected to be completed this year. The splash pad will be located along the riverfront near the amphitheater, which is a short walk from the Alton Marina.
Officials say that the goal of the splash pad is to connect children to water-focused play and nature, in order to better increase physical activity and support healthier life habits.
The City of Alton was awarded a $250,000 Building Better Communities grant in 2019 from the American Charitable Foundation. Also partnered in the project is the National Recreation and Park Association and Illinois American Water.
This will be the first educational splash pad of this kind in Alton........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Riverboats At The Gateway Arch Have Released Their Spring Schedule........
The Riverboats at the Gateway Arch has announced that they will be opening for the 2021 season on Saturday, March 13th with daily one-hour St. Louis Riverfront Cruises.
Later this spring, the specialty cruises, such as the Skyline Dinner Cruise, Decked Out Divas Cruise, Arch View Lunch Cruise, Blues Cruise and Sunday Brunch Cruise will be returning. Also returning are some dockside events including live music on the weekends and Docktails Happy Hour.
Director of Operations Robert Hopkins says that they are looking forward to welcome visitors back to the riverfront to enjoy some of the best views St. Louis has to offer as well as the wonders of the Mississippi River........

While Trolling The Internet.... We reeled in a vintage video from KSDK that was shot February 11, 1955 and shows the Mississippi River covered in ice. The video was taken from the deck of a U.S. Coast Guard vessel. The photojournalist was also able to capture a helicopter flying overhead as well as some birds taking flight from an ice floe....

Lake Of The Ozarks The Lake Is Freezing Over........
The frigid temperatures are causing something that the residents around the Lake of the Ozarks haven't seen in years, the lake freezing over, seemingly from one cove to the next.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol recently shared a photo shot by one of the patrol's marine officers near the 16 Mile Marker. The photo shows a huge slab of ice covering the lake from shore to shore.
The white icy landscape kind of makes it hard to imagine the warm, sunny party season that will be on the lake in just a few months. This weekend, a warm-up is expected to arrive, bringing with it temps over 32 degrees for the first time in several days........

Cruising News Future Cruise Ships May Be Sail Powered........
The French shipyard, Chantiers de l'Atlantique recently announced that they intend to build cruise ships equipped with 80 meter tall "eco-friendly" paneled sails constructed of carbon and fiberglass. The shipyard claims that the sails could reduce emissions by up to 50 percent.
According to Laurent Castaing, the General Manager of Chantiers de l'Atlantique, the firm has looked to sails as an eco-friendly cruising solution. The kink in the plans are that cruise ships would require large sails. The team determined that the existing technology and fabrics would not be up to the task.
The solution that the shipyard came up with are articulating structures resembling an accordion, with folding panels making up the sailing rig. These sails would be used in conjunction with engines and propellers, so the ships would not entirely be reliant upon strong winds........

Missouri River At Jefferson City, Missouri An Ice Jam Has Formed ........
On Tuesday, an ice jam formed along the Missouri River, approximately 5 miles upstream from the Missouri River Bridge in Jefferson City, Missouri. According to hydrologist Mark Fuchs with the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the jam is thought to have begun forming late Tuesday afternoon.
Fuchs says that you can see the impact by observing the readings from the river gauge at the bridge on Tuesday night. The river levels were around 4 feet at 10 pm, and by 10:15 pm, they had dropped noticeably. By 1 pm Wednesday, they had fallen to 0 feet.
According to records that the NWS has access to, the record low for the Missouri RIver in Jefferson City happened in February 1908, when the level fell to -1.1 feet below zero gauge. As of Wednesday evening, the river was at -0.19 feet below zero gauge.
Note that if a river gauge reads zero or below, this does not mean that the river has run dry or has retreated below ground; it just means that the river level is at or below the agreed-upon zero level........

Illinois River Shipping Ice Shuts Down It Down........
The recent arctic blast and resulting icing has prompted the closure of the Illinois River. Starting on February 8th, the American Commercial Barge Line advised their customers that they would be halting shipping along the Illinois RIver due to developing icy conditions.
On February 9th, the National Weather Service's North Central River Forecast Center announced that after several months of above average temperatures, the past week has seen a blast of arctic air causing the formation of ice along the Mississippi and Illinois River valleys. Much of the Illinois RIver is experiencing ice formation to some degree.
The Rick Island Engineer DIstrict reports that at the Thomas J. O'Brien Lock and Dam, the Illinois RIver is 100 percent covered with ice, 6 inches thick and extending 5 miles upstream. The Marseilles lock and Dam reports 100 percent coverage with 4 inch thick ice extending 3 miles upstream........

They would walk across the frozen river and even host winter carnivals with live music, gambling and drinking. Reportedly, a man opened a liquor store halfway across the river in 1854. Later that night, he added a 10 pin bowling alley........

The Sea Ray Sundancer line has been in production for more than four decades, and is a major contributor to the company's success. At noon on Thursday, the Sundancer 370 will be making it's debut, and will mark the beginning of a new direction for the company, as this model will be the first to incorporate cues from Designworks.
For the Sundancer line's 45th anniversary, Sea Ray is focused on outboard boats, smaller than 40 feet. Charlie Foss, the director of Sea Ray design, says that teaming up with Designworks, a BMW Group company, is the best choice to introduce a sleek new look.
Foss says that working with Designworks allowed them to come up with a fresh set of design principles that pay homage to Sea Ray's past while moving towards the future........

Boat Gear Manufacturer Garmin Posts Strong 4Q Results.........
Garmin recently released their results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2020, reporting consolidated net sales of $1.35 billion, which is a 23 percent increase over the same time period of last year.
For the fiscal year ending on December 31, Garmin posted their fifth consecutive year of revenue and operating income growth, reporting record consolidated revenue of $4.19 billion, or a 19 percent growth over 2019.
Cliff Pemble, Garmin president and CEO says that despite the challenges encountered during 2020, Garmin delivered record revenue and profits. He added that strong demand for active lifestyle products drove the increases, and they expect the trend will continue........

Dock Maintenance A Few Tips To Protect The Boat And Dock From Ice........
For better than a week, the Lake of the Ozarks has been well below freezing, and that brings up a host of issues for boaters and dock owners, such as boat and dock sinkings, dock ice and boat lifts dropping
Ice accumulation around the dock can cause serious damage. A simple solution in the form of a dock bubbler will keep ice from forming. Dock owners should also lengthen the cables and disconnect the hinges on the dock to allow it to follow water levels evenly.
Boat lifts dropping typically happens in cold weather, as the chilly temps reduce air pressure. The solution to this dilemma is a lift control system that automatically adds air to the lift when sensors detect the lift is starting to drop.
Boats sinking happen for a variety of reasons, and as long as it is secured ion the lift, all should be well. When the lift drops, is when problems an arise. Frozen sea cocks and ball valves will reveal a problem once they thaw, and boats whose drain plugs were left out for the winter will sink quickly. This issue circles around to the lift. If the lift is in good order, the boat should be too........

Historic Riverboats A Look Back At The Steamer Peoria........
In 1913, the Eagle Packet Company of St. Louis contracted with the Howard Shipyard to construct a wooden hulled sternwheeler for the price of $26,000. The new steamboat, named Peoria, measured 242 by 37.8 feet.
The Peoria was not completed in Jeffersonville. Instead, the vessel was pushed to St. Louis, where it was outfitted with four new boilers and the recycled engines from the towboat Ed Roberts, which many river men considered to be one of the best "coal pushers" between Louisville and Pittsburgh.
When completed, the Peoria's trial run proceeded upriver to Alton, Illinois, where the vessel was put through it's paces in front of the home of owners of the boat. The christening of the Peoria was held in the boat's namesake city in Illinois. It was reported to be a grand affair, with some 10,000 people in attendance........

Flooding Outlook Minor Flooding Expected This Spring........
According to the National Weather Service, there is only minor flooding expected this spring along the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois Rivers. They add that most local streams are expected to have a near-normal risk of flooding this spring.
The National Weather Service's forecast included the Mississippi River from above Canton, Missouri down to Above Cape Girardeau, Missouri; the Missouri River above Jefferson City, Missouri to the it's confluence with the Mississippi River; the Illinois River downstream from it's confluence with the LaMoine River to it's confluence with the Mississippi River, and for the tributary rivers in eastern Missouri as well as west central and southwest Illinois.
The National Weather Service reports that there is no current flooding in the St. Louis Service Area, and the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers are flowing at near-normal levels. The flow along the Illinois River has been below normal for most of the winter. Soil across the Midwest have largely dried out leaving the region with near to below normal soil moisture........

Lake Of The Ozarks Arctic Temps Cause The Bagnell Dam To Run Near Full Generation........
The waters of the Lake of the Ozarks are flowing through the Bagnell Dam at a rate allowing the generation of power at a near maximum level as demand spikes across Missouri.
On Friday, February 12, Amren Missouri reported that they expected to increase flow from the dam on Sunday and Monday. The dam's generators can flow between 40,000 and 50,000 cubic feet per second, which adds up to 215 megawatts to the grid.
The Bagnell Dam is able to react to peaking loads on the electrical grid, and the water behind the dam can provide sufficient power for Missourians to run their furnaces and space heaters........

Mississippi River Management Mississippi River Pollution Decreased Dramatically After Clean Water Act Passed........
The Mississippi River doesn't really have the cleanest reputation as it had been long treated as a drain for Midwestern cities, factories and farms, being fed a steady diet of bacteria, toxic chemicals and lead.
A recent study completed by the Louisiana State University reveals that the lowest sections of the Mississippi RIver have been becoming cleaner since the 1970s, when Congress passed the Clean Water Act.
According to Eugene Turner, an oceanography and coastal sciences professor, there has been a steady decline in bacteria, lead and other pollutants in Mississippi River water samples since the enaction of the Clean Water Act of 1972 was enacted........

Missouri River Near Hamburg, Iowa Levee To Be Raised Eight Feet........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the city of Hamburg, Iowa have recently signed an agreement to raise a levee near Hamburg by eight feet. During the flooding of 2019, water surged over this levee, and the levee itself sustained damage.
Hamburg will be spending $7.8 million to raise the levee by eight feet. Officials with the Corps will begin accepting bids for the project in a few weeks, and work should begin sometime this spring.
A new federal law allows river levees to be raised as well as repaired following flood damage. Officials note that the Hamburg levee is the first in the nation to get approval for a higher elevation........

The aging Mark Twain Landing Park and Splash Station waterpark located on the outskirts of Mark Twain Lake, were purchased in December by Greta Escapes RV Resorts, which is owned by the Jenkins Organization out of Houston, Texas.
Robin Severson, who will be managing the park, says that Great Escapes is spending $3 million for improvements and upgrades to the park, including a name change to the Mark Twain Lake Jellystone Park.
Severnson said that the park has been in need of a serious improvements over the past several years, which have been promised to campers with no results. Severson says that they will bring in new campers to the region, boosting tourism........

Mississippi River At Moline, Illinois A Progress Report On The Eastbound I-74 Bridge Project........
Last week, the Illinois and Iowa Departments of Transportation provided an update on the Illinois-bound span of the Interstate 74 Mississippi River Bridge Project between Bettendorf, Iowa and Moline, Illinois.
During the first week of February, workers installed the first of four intermediate crossbeams along the Illinois-bound arch. So far, more than half of the 30 arch segments have been installed for the Illinois-bound bridge.
In Bettendorf, the demolition of the old I-74 span is continuing to make way for the new bridges. Contractors have also been busy constructing piers south of Grant Street/U.S. 67........

Historic Vessels The First Diesel Towboat Had A Productive Life.........
Back in 1923, the Nashville Bridge Company of Nashville, Tennessee launched a unique tow vessel, the sternwheel Harvey, which was constructed for T.L. Herbert & Son.
The Harvey was 93 feet long and 26.8 feet wide, with a hullo depth of 4.3 feet. It featured a steel hull and a wooden cabin. the Harvey's main claim to fame was that the vessel boasted the first installation of fully diesel engines along the inland waterways.
The engines were Worthington engines that developed a total of 240 horsepower and coupled to twin sternwheels spun via gears. In 1945, the Harvey was transferred to the Sangravel Company in Paducah, Kentucky and repowered with a pair of Fairbanks Morse model 35 engines producing a total of 480 horsepower........

This week, the Alton City Council approved a resolution paving the way for modification and reconstruction work on the parking lot at Alton's Riverfront Park.
Construction work on the project could begin as soon as next month. Greg Caffey, Alton's Planning and Development head says that the project could take several months, potentially lasting into June or July.
Rooter's Asphalt of Beckemeyer submitted the low bid for the project, which came in under projections at just over $2.6 million........

Added Sunday Mississippi River Flooding Forecast The Spring Flood Outlook Is Fairly Normal........
According to the first Spring Flood Outlook released by the National Weather Service, Davenport, the threat of flooding along the Mississippi River is near normal despite all of the cold and snow the Midwest has seen so far this winter.
There is a slightly above normal chance for minor flooding south of the Quad Cities. The Rock River watershed has a higher risk for flooding than other local rivers at this time. This spring, the Rock River has above normal chances of reaching all categories of flood, from minor to major.
There are portions of Iowa and northern Illinois that have a snowpack, and the water equivalent is well above normal. Upstream, in the Upper Mississippi River Watershed, the snowpack and it's water equivalent is averaging below normal........

Mississippi River At Dorena, Missouri Ferry Closed Due To Ice........
Officials have announced that the Dorena-Hickman Ferry will be closed through the weekend due to icy weather conditions. The ferry had shut down around 1 pm Wednesday afternoon after freezing rain and sleet entered the area.
Conditions did not improve to where the ferry could resume service on Thursday or Friday. Captain Jeremy Newsome is hoping that the service will be able to reopen by Monday, February 15th.
The Dorena-Hickman Ferry carries vehicles over the Mississippi River between Kentucky 1354 at Hickman, Kentucky and Missouri Route A and Route 77 near Dorena, Missouri.......

Formula has announced that their 500 Super Sport Crossover will use the Verado in a quad setup and Tiara will install triple 600s on the 48LS. Sea Ray will install twin 600s on it's SLX 400 for the 2022 model year.

Boat Manufacturer MasterCraft Posts Best 2nd Quarter Ever........
MasterCraft Boat Holdings, Inc recently released their financial results for their fiscal 2021 second quarter, which ended on January 3, 2021. Fred Brightbill, chairman and chief executive officer says that this was the second consecutive quarter of record profits.
Net sales for the second quarter were $118.7 million, an increase of 19.1 percent or $19.0 million, compared to $99.6 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2020.
Gross profits rose 38.5 percent or $8.1 million to $29.3 million, compared to $21.1 million for the 2nd quarter of fiscal 2020. Gross margin ended up being 24.7 percent for the second quarter, an increase of 340 basis points compared to the prior year period........

A Cape Cod Shipwreck Contains Pirate Remains........
The remains of at least six pirates were discovered in the wreck of a legendary pirate ship that sank off of the coast of Cape Cod over three hundred years ago.
The remains were exhumed from the Whydah Galley, which went down off Wellfleet during a nor'easter in April, 1717. The pirates were found in several large concretions and are currently being examined by archaeologists.
Barry Clifford, who discovered the wreck in 1984, says that they are hopeful that modern technology will help with identifying the pirates and reunite them with any descendants that may be out there.........

His sailing buddies at Sioux Harbor, George Levesque (Ex Libris), Len Hughs (As Time Goes By), and Don Morrison (Ragtime Sails) hoisted the main halyard and kept a wary eye. Mississippi River Shipping Icy Conditions Slowing Barge Traffic........
This week's frigid temperatures are slowing, but not stopping, barge traffic along the Mississippi River in the Riverbend region. The tow boats continue to navigate the river and try to stay within the path of broken ice left by other vessels working the channel.
The continued frigid temperatures will eventually cause the river to freeze solid, even within the channel. The towboats may still be able to break through, but eventually, the ice will cause issues at the locks and dams along the Mississippi River.
Temperatures around the Riverbend have been well below freezing for the past several days, and the trend is forecasted to continue. The high temperatures are expected to stay below freezing into next week, with dangerous wind chills........

Water Safety Alton Firefighters Train In Icy Conditions........
The Alton Fire Department personnel constantly train for any eventuality that may pop up, and this week, the frigid temperatures have them at the Spencer T. Olin Golf Court Pond for some ice rescue training.
Alton Battalion Chief Matt Fischer coordinated the ice rescue training. According to Chief Jesse Jemison, Fischer is the department's authority on ice rescues, as he had trained some time ago in New England.
Jemison added that over the past several winters, they were not able to train on ice, as it was not cold enough. This year, however, the temperatures have allowed the training of 18 or 19 newer Firefighters who hadn't had the opportunity to train for ice water rescues. Some of the East Alton Fire Department personnel participated in the training as well........

Mark Twain Lake Corps Looking For Volunteers ........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake is calling for volunteers for Gate Attendant and recreation maintenance positions. Full time volunteers (that work a minimum of 20 hours per week) can receive a full service camp site for their service.
Gate Attendant volunteers man the campground entrance stations and provide visitors with information, help out with registration and provide record keeping for the campground.
Recreation volunteers will help out with tasks including installing signs and maintenance, trimming of vegetation, painting, customer surveys, minor maintenance tasks and assistance with special events........

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois Riverfront Plans Presented To The Steering Committee........
On Thursday, a consolidated master plan for the Quincy riverfront that included public input from January's survey results was presented to the Quincy Riverfrotn Steering Committee for review.
The latest survey revealed that flood mitigation, Maine Street improvements, the location of the Bill Klingner Trail and Lincoln Park were the main concerns. As far as flood mitigation is concerned, 74 percent of the respondents preferred the plan that reduced the likelihood of a flood from 20 percent to 4 percent.
THe preferred features from the two riverfront concepts presented in January included an event plaza, a restaurant row on Hampshire Street, Gateway Overlook and Riverfront Edge Trail........

Boating Safety Coast Guard Considers Safety Reforms Following Fatal Fire........
On Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard indicated that they would be implementing several recommended safety reforms for passenger vessels following the fatal fire aboard a SCUBA dive boat that claimed the lives of 34 people off the coast of California.
The fire broke out aboard the Conception during the final night of a three day Labor Day Weekend SCUBA diving trip near Santa Cruz Island off of Santa Barbara. This incident was the deadliest marine disaster in California in modern history.
Coast Guard Vice Admiral Scott Buschman said in a letter that he agreed with seven recommendations submitted by the National Transportation Safety Board after the Conception Tragedy. The recommendations include the installation of more comprehensive smoke detector systems, requiring safety management systems, upgrading emergency exits and making mandatory inspection checks on roving watches........

The 600 HP Verado is a 7.6 liter, V-12 engine that weighs in at 1,260 pounds. It features a couple of unique innovations that Mercury calls industry firsts: a steerable gearcase and an automatic two speed transmission.
Chris Drees, president of Mercury Marine says that boats are growing ever larger and performance expectations are rising as well. As a result, boaters have been calling for a better, more capable high horsepower solution to meet their needs, Mercury answered with the V-12 Verado........

Mississippi River Shipping Icy Conditions Slowing Barge Traffic........
This week's frigid temperatures are slowing, but not stopping, barge traffic along the Mississippi River in the Riverbend region. The tow boats continue to navigate the river and try to stay within the path of broken ice left by other vessels working the channel.
The continued frigid temperatures will eventually cause the river to freeze solid, even within the channel. The towboats may still be able to break through, but eventually, the ice will cause issues at the locks and dams along the Mississippi River.
Temperatures around the Riverbend have been well below freezing for the past several days, and the trend is forecasted to continue. The high temperatures are expected to stay below freezing into next week, with dangerous wind chills........

Boat Propulsion Outboard Sales Hits 20 Year High........
The National Marine Manufacturers Association's recently released their Outboard Engine Sales Trends abstract reveals that last year's outboard motor sales rose to 330,000 units sold, which is the highest annual outboard sales in 20 years.
The National Marine Manufacturers Association reports that 2020 was the ninth consecutive year of growth in the outboard segment, as well as an 18 percent increase compared with 2019.
NMMA director of business intelligence Vicky Yu says that the increased interest in boating during the COVID-19 outbreak helped boost outboard sales to historic levels........
