Despite COVID, Grafton Saw Strong Tourism Season........

It may not be certain how Grafton's businesses will react to the governor's Tier 3 mitigations, this summer and the majority of the fall were very good for tourists in the river town.

Tourism has been the main economic driver for Grafton for several decades, and this year was no exception.  Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin says that the Grafton Ferry saw heavy traffic this year, including three record weekends.

Eberlin says that the Annual Grafton Holiday gathering has been postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the fireworks show on New Year's Eve will go on........

Asian Carp Update

University Of Illinois Serving Asian Carp Since 2017........

Since 2017, Chef Soohwa Yu has been service Asian carp at four out of six dining halls at the University of Illinois.  Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian carp was offered at least one per week, now, it is only offered once every two weeks.

Yu says that before the pandemic, he served Asian carp as a full bone-in fish, noting that many students hadn't seen a whole fish before.  Ted Penesis, the director of the Office of Community Outreach for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources says that Asian carp is more popular to east in Asian countries, and is most often eaten with the bones in.

Consuming Asian carp is a strategy that is intended to reduce the carp population and keep them from getting into the Great Lakes.  Penesis says that eating Asian carp is healthy, tasty and environmentally friendly........

Art Keller Marina Looking Into Privatization.........

The Quincy Park Board is considering the possibility of privatizing the Art Keller Marina on Quinsippi Island following several years of decreasing slip rentals.  A survey has been sent out to marina slipholders to get their input on the marina, including it's amenities and possible privatization.

The Quincy Park District is requesting qualifications from interested parties next month with responses due in January of 2021. During the Board's January meeting, the board may consider a possible lease, with a lessee taking over the day-to-day marina operations on February 1, 2021.

Boat slip rentals have fallen over 45 percent since 2011, when 192 slips were rented out.  THe Park District rented 113 and 103 boat slips in 2019 and 2020 respectively, however, 2019 saw the second highest flood on record in Quincy and this year brought the OCVID-19 pandemic........

News Release From BoatUS

SPRINGFIELD, Va., Nov. 18, 2020 – Boaters looking to buy themselves a Christmas gift may be thinking about adding some “bling” to the boat – multicolored decorative LED deck and space lighting. Just don’t light your boat up like a Christmas tree, says the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water. Extra lights installed in the wrong place could cause other boaters to misinterpret your boat’s navigation lights and present a safety hazard.

“Today’s decorative lighting options, from ropes to underwater lighting, allow DIYers to personalize their boats,” said BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water President Chris Edmonston. “The challenge comes when the boat is underway. Decorative lights installed in the wrong location may cause others to misinterpret your vessel’s red, green and white navigation lighting. Bright lights of many colors can also reduce your night vision and hamper your ability to safely navigate.”

The BoatUS Foundation has two tips when shopping for and installing decorative boat lights:

1. When underway, avoid displaying any light that could be confused as a navigation light or another type of vessel. When installing decorative LED lighting, running wiring to a single master switch allows you to easily turn off all nonessential lights before heading out. Remember, flashing blue lights are reserved for law enforcement – at a distance, wave action combined with the steady rocking of high-intensity blue lights below the waterline can give the appearance of a police vessel.

2. Don’t install decorative lights that prevent the operator from maintaining a good lookout. When running between sunset and sunrise, it’s critical that those behind the wheel maintain their night vision, so the number-one goal is to keep light out of the operator’s eyes. Glare from aesthetic lighting such as LED rope lights wrapped around a helm station can hinder night vision.

Mississippi River Ports

Corn Belt Ports Gain Fed Recognition On U.S. Port List........

Even though the so-called "Corn Belt Ports" along the Mississippi River have been handling millions of tons of grain and other goods for decades, they had not been ranked or recognized on the principal U.S. ports list.

This changed in 2020, as three new Port Statistical Areas in the tri-state region of Illinois, Iowa and Missouri made their debut on the list:  the Illinois Waterway Ports and Terminals, the Mid-America Port and the Mississippi River Ports of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois.

All together, the new Port Statistical Areas accounted for over 31 million tons of freight during 2019, ranking in as the 22nd largest port in the United States.  By size, that is comparable to the Port of Tampa, Florida.........

Jump In Powerboat Sales During September........

According to new data released by the National Marine Manufactures Association, new powerboat sales increased during September, following the slowdown during July and August after record growth in June.

New boat sales had increased 22 percent over August, compared to August 2019, and was up 9 percent year-to-date compared to 2019.  September 2020 ranks as the second highest single-month total of new powerboats sold in over a decade.

NMMA business intelligence director Vicky Yu says that new powerboat retail sales are strong across the board, from the high volume fishing and pontoon segments that make up nearly half of all new boat sales, to the wakesports and offshore fishing segments........

Dam News From The Oregon/California Border

Deal Renews Plans For Largest U.S. Dam Removal Project........

On Tuesday, officials announced that an agreement was made that will kick off the largest dam demolition project in U.S. history.  This project will reopen hundreds of miles of the Klamath River along the Oregon - California border.

The project revives plans for removing four hydroelectric dams and intends to restore the waterway to benefit the salmon that are critical to the American Indian tribes, but have dwindled away over the years.

The removal of the dams would empty giant reservoirs and reopen potential fish habitat that has been blocked for more than a century.  The project would head up a trend towards dam removals in the U.S., as the structures age and become less economically viable........

Corps May Construct An Island To Protect Dam........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning on building a protective 40 acre island just a few hundred yards upstream of Lock and Dam No.2 near Hastings, Minnesota.

The island will be constructed from the sand and mud dredged from the lock itself, and will act as a wind break.  It will be planted with willows and native grasses to block wind, ice and waves.

Nick Castellane, project manager for the Corps says that they would like to design a beach for a variety of shorebirds, then install grasses and a wetlands habitat where they hope they will get turtles nesting........

Joseph Chartrand of St. Charles received a land grant to operate a Missouri River ferry. It was to be bordered by "A passage for inhabitants crossing into St. Charles." The passage developed into the St. Charles Road. It was rocked in 1865, and has been known as the St. Charles Rock Road ever since. (Even though it has been a paved highway since 1921)

As part of the attempts to prevent the spread of Asian carp, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources recently announced that four silver carp were recently caught, fitted with tracking devices and released into Pool 8 of the Mississippi River near La Crosse, Wisconsin.

The Minnesota DNR contracted a commercial fishing operation to capture the invasive carp.  Contract commercial fishing operations will continue into the fall as long as weather conditions allow.

This operation was in response to the capture of Asian carp in pool 8 during the spring carp surveillance.  This was the first time multiple carp have been tagged in a single operation.  So far, no breeding populations have been detected in Minnesota waters.........

Life Preserver History....

November 16, 1811 in Life Jacket History

Life preservers made of cork were patented by Napoleon Guerin in NYC

From Wikipedia
Napoleon Guerin of New York City, United States is an inventor who obtained a U.S. patent for the first life preserver made of cork on November 16, 1841. It was constructed in jacket form, with two layers of material between which the cork could be inserted. Guerin suggested using between 18 and 20 quarts of rasped or grated cork, depending on the weight of the person, but he was not specific about the type of fabric to be used in the jacket, saying only that it could be "made of cotton or any other material."

Do Old Boats Go To Heaven?

When fiberglass boats reach the end of their useful lives, what happens to them?  Until recently, they would likely end up in a landfill somewhere.  Now, an innovative recycling business could change that.

Dennis Nixon, University of Rhode Island Sea Grant director has been asking what to do with derelict hulls for years.  Nixon says that marina managers have told him that they need to come up with something other than smashing the hulls up and sending them to the landfill.

URI graduate research student and head of the program Evan Ridley took the reins on the fiberglass debacle and launched the Rhode Island Fiberglass Vessel Recycling Pilot Project.  Ridley took the group's focus and aimed it at exploring the use of fiberglass boat hulls as a fuel source for the cement industry.........

Belle of Louisville

Ohio River At Louisville, Kentucky

The Belle Of Louisville Is In Drydock For Inspection, Repairs........

The excursion steamboat Belle of Louisville recently traveled up the Ohio River to Gallipolis, Ohio for it's five year Coast Guard inspection and other repair work prior to shutting down for the winter.

The Coast Guard's inspection of the 106 year old Belle of Louisville found no serious issues, so crews began working on painting the hull and winterizing the vessel.  Workers made preventative repairs to a cooler box on the side of the vessel, and will need to work on the transom bulkhead, just forward of the paddlewheel.

When the Belle of Louisville heads back home, the vessel will be pushed by a towboat.  While the tow boat and towing company have not been chosen, there will be barges included in the tow as a way to protect the Belle........

Mississippi River Pump Proposal Garners Strong Reactions........

Officials, farmers and rural shopkeepers are voicing their approval of the Yazoo Backwater Project, a proposed flood control project that will pump water from portions of the south Delta.

Environmental groups are opposed to the project, claiming for decades that it would be an expensive wasteful project that would help agribusiness at the expense of harming wetlands.

Last month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers posted a draft of a new environmental impact statement that supports the pump project.  This is a reversal of an earlier report that stated that wetlands will be damaged.........

Cave-In-Rock Ferry Reopened After Brief Closure........

Officials report that the Cave-In-Rock Ferry along the Ohio River has reopened after being closed for several hours due to high winds.  Reportedly, winds along the Ohio River were blowing about 21 miles per hour out of the west at the ferry crossing.

Whenever high winds are blowing upstream, hazardous river conditions are created.  The Cave-In-Rock Ferry was shut down around 7:45 am Sunday morning, and reopened around 6:40 pm........

The Video of the Day..... was sent to us by Martin Berkemeyer from Bremerhaven, Germany with the following note:

Hello, my name is Martin Berkemeyer,

I am from Bremerhaven, Germany and saw before some minutes an old tv movie. A German reporter, with his family was driving through the states in 1956. They crossed the Mississippi with a ferry, in the back I could see Kinders Tavern. After watching the movie I wanted to check on Google Maps if I find the place and I did. I also saw the Kinders exists until 2019 but can´t find a e-mail account. Maybe you can send the link to Amanda from Kinders Restaurant, maybe it´s interesting for her or maybe anybody is seeing one of the men on the ferry and it was the grandfather of somebody?

After 8.48 minutes the little scene is coming. Here is the youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTFDcL3V40U

RiverBill says...  Thanks Martin for the link to the movie.  Above are a couple of pictures we pulled from it and enhanced them a bit.  We also sent your email on to Amanda and the Calhoun Ferry Company. (the owner of the Golden Eagle Ferry these days.)

Tundra Swans Have Returned To The Region........

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge recently announced the return of swans along the waters surrounding the Mississippi River.  Each fall, tundra swans migrate along the refuge.

At their peak, which is typically around the second week of November, there may be upwards of 50,000 swans at the refuge.  They will remain in the backwater areas where they will feed until the water freezes over, and then, often in one evening, the all disappear, heading to Chesapeake Bay and the Carolina shore........

A Dry 2020 Leaves Missouri River In Good Shape For Possible 2021 Floods........

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials are saying that this year's drought conditions within the Missouri River Basin has left the basin in a good position concerning flood conditions in 2021.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently held their annual public meetings to update stakeholders on river conditions and flood forecasts heading into the new year.  John Remus, the chief of the Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that the dry year places les emphasis on evacuating water for flood storage and more emphasis on keeping the Lower Missouri River Basin open for navigation.

Remus says that they have shifted their management focus from floodwater evacuation to meeting the downstream flow targets.  He adds that he wants to reassure the public that the Corps is committed to their flood risk reduction mission, in protecting stakeholders where possible from significant hydrological events that endanger human health and safety........

Couple Traveling Down The Missouri River Hit A Snag........

An Iowa Couple in their mid-forties decided to take a trip to Florida to get away from it all, but they chose a unique way to get there.  Back in July, they purchased a 34 foot Sea Ray and charted a course to a Florida marina.

About a month ago, they ran into some trouble after getting stuck on a sandbar near Omaha and springing a leak.  After maneuvering to the shore, the couple took a cab and bought a heavy duty pump to keep their boat afloat.

The ankle-deep river water makes the boat's cabin unlivable and the colder temperatures hinders camping, so, the couple has been crashing at a friend's apartment.  They have also gotten help from the Omaha River Rats, who have offered transportation and are helping to plan repairs........

Cruise Planners Offering Exclusive Deals........

Cruise Planners recently held their latest Where2Next virtual event entitled Once Upon A River, during which they invited customers to virtually travel along the world's rivers with three selected cruise lines offering special promotions:  AmaWaterways, American Cruise Lines and Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection.

Michelle Fee, Cruise Planners' Founder and CEO says that some 25 percent of their bookings are of river cruises, and the pent-up consumer demand is trending high in that category, even into late 2021.  As a result, travelers are working with their travel advisors to get the best possible cruises, lock in the best rates and claim their cabins.

Cruise Planners has teamed up with three selected cruise lines to offer travelers access to some special promotions on 2021-2022 river cruises.  American Cruise Lines is offering savings of up to $1,000 per stateroom on selected Mississippi River sailings, plus an additional $100 per stateroom shipboard credit as a Cruise Planners Exclusive amenity........

River Cruising News

Cruise Planners Offering Exclusive Deals........

Several hundred thousand enthusiasts visit boat shows held coast-to-coast every year — most between September and February — to get an up-close view of the latest and greatest in all things boaty. Enter 2020 and COVID-19. The breezy, carefree, dream-a-little-dream boat show experience we all know and love is mostly on hold for now. A few show managers are pressing ahead as of press time. But most shows have been canceled.

Despite these headwinds, new and used boats are selling strongly at local dealerships and at the private-seller level according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. After a quiet March and April, it seems even nonboaters figured out that escaping to the water was one of the most viable and compelling recreational options. By May, new boat sales jumped 59% from April — up 9% even from prepandemic levels, according to NMMA's Sarah Salvatori. "Total sales in May were the highest they've been in a decade," she says, "with upticks across all segments." Other notable statistics:

• Personal watercraft sales in June were up 41% from a year ago.
• Saltwater fishing boat sales were up 9% in May, compared to a year ago.
• Jet boat sales were up 31% in May, compared to a year ago.
• Outboard engine sales in June were up an average 28% from prepandemic levels

Mississippi River At Bettendorf, Iowa

The New I-74 Bridge Is Opening Friday........

On Friday, the span carrying the four westbound lanes of Interstate 74 over the Mississippi River between Bettendorf, Iowa and Moline, Illinois.  When the eastbound span opens next year, the bridge will have eight lanes ferrying traffic across the Mississippi River.

According to George Ryan, the Interstate 74 corridor manager, this is an exciting time for the Quad Cities, as the new bridge is a striking and iconic bridge design.

The 12 billion project is replacing the original bridge, which opened to traffic in 1935.  The bridge had become too small to handle the traffic requirements, so a replacement was constructed.  The old bridge will remain in service until the new eastbound span is complete........

The Arabia Steamboat Museum opened it's doors in Kansas City, Mo. It houses artifacts salvaged from the Arabia steam boat and is advertised as the largest single collection of pre-Civil War artifacts in the world.

The Steamboat Arabia sunk on the Missouri River in 1856 after hitting a snag. Over the years the Missouri River channel changed and it was rediscovered in 1988 lying 45 feet below a corn field. The steamboat was excavated and the well preserved contents are in the museum

First Responders Train Onboard A Barge........

Living along the Mississippi River can result in many different challenges for first responders to deal with, which is why on-water training is essential for gaining hands-on experience for rescue scenarios.

Some members of the Southeast Missouri Homeland Security Response Team recently had the opportunity to train with fire and rescue crews from Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Sikeston on a barge at the Buzzi Unicem concrete facility.

Brad Dillow, Battalion Chief of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department said that the responders are being exposed to the challenges of operating aboard a barge.  One of the bigger challenges responders face is getting their equipment safely out onto the barge........

Airman Surprised Family With Homecoming At The Top Of The Arch.........

Airman Kevin Walton had been deployed to Saudi Arabia for five months, and he dreamed of surprising his family when he got to come home.  On Tuesday, he did just that at the top of the Gateway Arch.

With the assistance of friends, Walton's wife Celeste and their three kids headed to the Gateway Arch for a fun ride to the top.  Celeste did not take the tram ride up, so Walton surprised his kids atop the Arch, and then his wife when he and the little ones came back down.

Celeste Walton said that she was quite surprised as she was not expecting Kevin to come home for another month.  She added that she would mo longer have to cook Thanksgiving dinner by herself........
