Mississippi River Journeys

Michigan Couple Paddling The Mississippi River........

Nate Denofre is making the trip of a lifetime by paddling over 2,000 miles down the Mississippi River with just his wife Christa and his dog, Marci.  For the past 90 days, the trio has been making their way to the Gulf Coast in a 17 foot canoe.

Nate has undertaken the journey to raise awareness and funds for the non-profit organization, Courage Incorporated, which helps disabled veterans and adults become one with nature.

Nate was born without legs and understands the concept of fear.  He says everyone is disabled, as a disability is something that doesn't allow you to do something you should be able to do. He is hoping that his journey will help others turn their fear into courage.........

Mississippi River At Herculaneum, Missouri

The River View Drew Couple To Their New Home........

Beloved memories of watching barges along the Mississippi River with her mother in St. Louis' Bellerive Park prompted Bev Dougherty and her husband to look for a weekend home along the Mississippi River.

For years, she and her husband Pat, searched for riverfront properties from north of St. Louis to Louisiana, Missouri, downstream to Chester, Illinois.  Bev said that she wanted a place where she could see the whites of the riverboat captain's eyes.

Bev says that in 2012, her daughter Liz called and said that she had found a promising listing in Herculaneum, and they drove out to have a look.  When she got out of the car and saw the expansive view of the river, she exclaimed "This is it!"........

Ohio River At Cave-In-Rock, Illinois

Cave-In-Rock Has Evolved From Pirate Lair To Tourist Attraction.........

Each year, several hundred thousand visitors trek to the tiny Ohio River village of Cave-In-Rock to take in the huge cave carved out of the limestone bluffs along the Ohio River.  At one time, however, the cave wasn't very inviting.

An article written in 2015 and published in Atlas Obscura painted a dark picture of the cave.  Headlined A Cave of Villainy on the Ohio River, the article made it clear that the cave was no tourist destination for pioneers and settlers heading west in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

The cave was "discovered" by French explorer M. De Lery in 1739.  He called the cave caverne dans Le Roc.  The article states that around 1790. the cave became a base camp for river pirates who would ambush flatboats carrying cargo along the Ohio River........

The St. Louis Aquarium

Every Week Is Shark Week........

Every summer, the Discover Channel hosts their Shark Week, which begins Sunday evening.  The long-running, Shark week enthralls audiences from all over the world with programming that features marine biology, celebrities and shark attacks.

A little closer to home, the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station allows visitors to celebrate Shark Week at any time.  The attraction had opened in December, and following the short closure due to the COVID-19 outbreak, it reopened in early June.

The aquarium's Shark Canyon habitat makes visitors believe that they are along the coast of New Zealand or Australia as they watch sharks prowling through the water.  The 250,000 gallon tank is home to blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, sandbar sharks, zebra and nurse sharks, as well as rays and largemouth guitarfish........

Sad News

Little John Passes Away........

September 8, 1953 - August 3, 2020
Born in Davenport, IA
Resided in St. Charles, MO
.
John R. Bicknese, of Saint Charles, Missouri, passed away Monday, August 3, 2020 at the age of 66. Beloved son of the late Edwin and Eleanor Bicknese; dear father of Randy (Diane) Bicknese and Annette Bicknese; loving grandfather of Hayden Bicknese; dearest brother of Joni Bicknese, Janet Bicknese, Jackie (Randy) Melin, Jim Bicknese; the late Jerry Bicknese, the late Joyce Slouha and the late Jean Feuss. John is also survived by his dog, Charlie, who was his greatest love and will miss him dearly.

John worked as a marine mechanic and owned Little John’s Marine Service for more than 45 years. He loved boating and his true passion was racing drag boats. He traveled throughout Missouri and Kentucky for races, and he was a member of the Kentucky Drag Boat Association. He always looked forward to hanging out with the gang from the Con Trios Yacht Club, where he was also a member.

John never knew a stranger, it seemed anywhere he went he was bound to run into someone he knew. He had a great heart and would do anything to help his friends. He was also a great handyman and a jack-of-all-trades who could fix just about anything he put his hands on.

John will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater Has Cancelled All Events........

On Monday, the Alton Amphitheater Commission voted Unanimously to cancel all remaining events scheduled for this year's Liberty Bank Amphitheater 2020 season.

According to amphitheater Chairman Robert Stephan, the decision was made at the state level, as the Department of Labor isn't inspecting amusement rides and the Health Department is not issuing food permits, which are required for food vendors before they are allowed to operate.

Stephan adds that it simply is not a good idea to host events that can draw hundreds or even thousands of people.  He says that they have consulted with the Madison County Health Department and agree that any event with the potential to draw large crowds is not safe at this time........

Boating Legislation

The Great American Outdoors Act Is Signed Into Law........

President Donald Trump recently signed the bipartisan Great American Outdoors Act, which is the single largest investment in the nation's public lands and waters in several decades.

The official signing of the bill is the culmination of years of advocacy from the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the recreational boating community as well as the outdoor recreation industry.

The Greta American Outdoors Act will fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund and handles the maintenance backlog on the public lands and waters by investing in boating infrastructure such as boat ramps, docks and parking facilities........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Man Killed In Freak Boating Accident........

Wednesday evening, an Illinois man was killed in a bizarre accident on the Lake of the Ozarks.  The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that 55 year old Craig Gathmann of Mainto, Ill. was killed after being struck by an anchor.

According to the MSHP, Gathmann and another person were aboard a 1998 Four Winns 240 anchored in a cove near the 20 Mile Marker.  At approximately 5 pm, they began to leave the cove, but apparently forgot to pull up the anchor.

MSHP Sergeant Scott White says that witnesses tried to alert the boaters that they were pulling something in the water to no avail.  Apparently, as the boat gained speed, the anchor rose in the water and tension increased on the line.  When the anchor breached the surface, the MSHP believes a slingshot effect was created, propelling the anchor into Gathmann........

News Release From BoatUS

SPRINGFIELD, Va., August 5, 2020 - More first-time boat buyers are getting on the water this season than in summers past. Along with the boat, many new owners also find themselves shopping for boat insurance for the first time. What are the most basic things new boat owners should know about buying a boat policy? BoatUS, the nation’s largest advocacy, services, and safety group with more than 700,000 members, offers three wise buying tips.

Know the two basic types of boat insurance policies: Agreed Hull Value (AHV) and Actual Cash Value (ACV). AHV policies are the most popular type of boat insurance policy sold today because if there is a total loss, there are no surprises: You and your boat insurer have already agreed on the value paid on the vessel. If, at the policy’s inception, you and your insurer agree to a hull value of $35,000, you will get $35,000 on a total loss.

ACV policies often appeal to the more frugal because they cost less. However, if the boat is a total loss, the insurance company will pay the claim based on the actual value of the boat on the day of the loss, which is likely to be lower than what it was on the day that you purchased the boat.

With both AHV and ACV policy types, it’s also good to understand how partial losses are paid, as depreciation can be a factor on certain equipment and boat parts and often vary among boat insurers.
Look at how the boat policy handles towing assistance coverage. First ensure the policy offers an on-water towing coverage endorsement, understand how that coverage is offered and how it will pay for the tow. Otherwise, you may have to pay a hefty towing bill out of your own pocket. Adding an on-water towing endorsement to your boat policy is often less expensive than purchasing a stand-alone annual towing plan. BoatUS offers this coverage for as low as $36 a year with no deductibles and an easy-to-use App that summons the closest local TowBoatUS towing captain.

New boat buyers who will be trailering their boat may want to ask about roadside assistance services as most auto clubs don’t handle disabled boat trailers – which may explain why they are sometimes seen left unattended on the side of a road, a prime target for theft.
Pay attention to a policy’s boat salvage coverage because this could offer you significant financial benefits should you have to file a claim. A boat policy’s salvage coverage will pay to recover your sunk or partially sunk boat from under the collapsed shed, at its dock or stuck on a beach, and transport it safely to a repair facility. Some boat insurance policies either (1) won’t pay for it, (2) will deduct the cost of salvage from your total payout leaving you with less money or (3) will make you coordinate the salvage, leaving you to hire the marine salvors, cranes and barges by yourself – a difficult task on a good day and especially challenging after a major storm event.

For a free boat insurance quote or learn more, go to BoatUS.com/Insurance or call 800-283-2883.

Boating Standards

ABYC Updated Boat Building, Repair Standards........

The American Boat and Yacht Council has released their 60th supplement of standards and Technical Information Reports for Small Craft, which gives the marine industry the latest in boat construction and repair standards.

ABYC Technical Director Brian Goodwin says that this year's supplement includes much anticipated information on lithium-ion batteries, giving crucial guidance to the marine industry about this growing technology.

Goodwin adds that new technology was also included in electronic/electric steering and propulsion control.  In response to market trends, the new standard, called P28, addresses dynamic positioning, joysticks and wireless controls........

Sheriff Hoping For Help Identifying 3 Newborns Found In River........

The Goodhue County Sheriff's Office is looking to utilize DNA testing to help solve the deaths of three newborns found in the Mississippi River at three different locations between 1999 and 2007.

The Sheriff's Office has allocated $5,000 to fund genetic genealogy analysis of the first body, that of a baby girl who was found in the water in 1999 by an angler near Red Wing, Minnesota.

The genealogy report will compare the girl's DNA with volunteers in GEDmatch, a public DNA database where participants upload their DNA in hopes of identifying relatives.  Law enforcement has been utilizing this database to solve cold cases thanks to the popularity of at-home DNA kits........

Mississippi River Flood Stages

NWS Updating Flood Stages From Canton, Mo To Grafton, Ill........

The National Weather Service recently announced that effective Wednesday, August 5th, flood stage updates will take effect on the Mississippi River, between Lock and Dam No.20 at Canton, Missouri and Grafton, Illinois.

All of the changes will be made to the minor flood stages, with the Minor flood stages being raised at Canton Lock and Dam, Hannibal, Quincy and the Quincy Lock and Dam No. 21.  Minor flood stage will be lowered at LaGrange, Missouri, as flooding occurs below warning levels.

The National Weather Service states that the previous warning thresholds were not reflective of flooding affecting people or property.  The NWS adds that the changes are being made in the hopes that the public will take the flood warnings seriously........

The official changes include:

○  Canton L&D 20: Raising minor flood stage from 14 to 15 feet.
○  LaGrange, MO: Lowering minor flood stage from 18 to 17 feet.
○  Quincy, IL (downtown gage): Raising minor flood stage from 17 to 19 feet.
○  Quincy L&D 21: Raising minor flood stage from 17 to 18 feet.
○  Hannibal, MO: Raising minor flood stage from 16 to 17 feet.
○  Saverton L&D 22: No change at minor flood stage, but raising major stage from 22 to 24 feet.
○  Grafton, IL: Raising minor flood stage from 18 to 20 feet.

Reader Commentary

Yesterday's Century Coronado Story........

Ahoy Bill,

Hope all is well, we are healthy here. The story about the Century Coronado really brought back some memories. My folks boated out of Woodland Harbor in the 60's with several other families, each weekend we would cruise up to Turkey Island and anchor behind the sand bar. Every night we would have a bonfire and just enjoy being on the river.

Just below Turkey Island the Busch family owned a farm along the right descending bank. There was an inlet with a boat lift holding a Century Coronado similar to the one in your story. We would hop in our 8' Jon boat and float by, often dreaming about what it would be like to take a ride. Our luck held one day when the farm caretaker was splashing her for an exercise run. He said come aboard, we scrambled to get aboard and had smiles all around as we ran up to Winfield Dam and back. One of my great memories on the Pool 26 and the Mississippi River.

Be well!

Boating Legislation

Wisconsin Rep. Backs Legislation Supporting The Mississippi River........

Wisconsin Representative Ron Kind is pushing for legislation aimed at helping the waterways across the nation.  The Water Resources Development Act is intended to support the management and monitoring of the Mississippi River.

Kind believes that the legislation is necessary because of what the river offers.  He notes that among the uses that the river provides, including outdoor recreation, commercial navigation and tourism, the legislation recognizes this as well as striking the correct balance amongst those uses.,

The Water Resources Development Act includes support for the Lock and Dam system along the Mississippi River........

Mississippi River Journeys

80 Year Old Navy Veteran Paddling The Mississippi River........

Stanley Stark, an 80 year old retired Navy Veteran recently began a journey down the Mississippi River in a kayak.  He started out in Lake Itasca on July 15th, and has probably traveled about 200 miles.

Stark says that he is paddling for a cause.  He believes that the trip might just motivate some older people that are sitting on the couch, waiting to pass away, to get up off of the couch.  He adds that he is also raising money for a non-profit homeless housing development, Sarge's Place.

Stark says that the trip so far has been peaceful, with the exception of the first 53 miles of the trip.  Stark notes that his kayak took a beating near Bemidji, as the Mississippi River is shallow.........

River Pilots Seek 28 Percent Raise........

The union representing the river pilots that guide ships from the Gulf of Mexico to New Orleans recently filed a formal request for a 28 percent increase in pay and improvements to their working conditions.

The nearly 100 year old Crescent River Port Pilots Association represents the 122 river pilots that guide everything from cargo ships and tankers to cruise ships along the lower 100 miles of the Mississippi River.

The pilot's union is petitioning the Louisiana Pilotage Fee Commission, who oversees pilotage on the rivers and sets fees, for the wage increase as well as an annual cost of living adjustment........

Louisiana Approved Deepening River Channel To 50 Feet........

On Friday, the State of Louisiana and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers agreed to begin the process of deepening the Mississippi River's shipping channel from the Gulf of Mexico to Baton Rouge to 50 feet.  The shipping channel's current depth is 45 feet.

Officials state that deepening the channel will also provide deep draft access to the ports located in Plaquemines, New Orleans, South Louisiana and Baton Rouge.

Officials say that the funding for the approximately $250 million project has been allocated from a variety of sources, including the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, who has committed $81 million........

Close To 60 Different Types Of Fish In Chicagoland Waters

Up From About 10 Different Types in the 80's....

Over the past several decades, the variety of fish found in the rivers surrounding Chicago has increased.  Officials are attributing the species increase to a decrease in the amount of pollution found in the Chicago and Calumet Rivers.

This report, which was released Monday by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, claims that there are close to 60 different types of fish swimming the Chicagoland waterways.

According to the Chicago Tribune, there were fewer than 10 types of fish in these waterways during the 1980s.  Carp is the most prolific species in the rivers.  Some of the other species now appearing in the rivers are bluegill, catfish, largemouth bass and yellow perch.........

Boat Explodes On The Lake....  Serious Injuries Avoided....

The Missouri State Highway Patrol's Water Patrol Division reports that on Sunday evening, a boat exploded on the Lake of the Ozarks.  The people aboard the vessel were able to escape for the most part unscathed.

Officials with the MSHP stated that around 7:45 pm, a 2000 Mariah Z302 piloted by 40 year old Brian Lansing was headed north near the 21 Mile Marker when it exploded.

The explosion caused moderate damage to the vessel, which was towed by Lake Tow.  A passenger in the boat, 69 year old Nicholas Lansing suffered minor injuries, but refused medical treatment........

Mississippi River Near Kellogg, Iowa

Corps Finds Permanent Storage Spot For Pool 5 Dredged Material........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently announced that they have found a storage spot for the dredged material removed from the Pool 5 region of the Mississippi River.

Paul Machajewski, the dredged material manager for the Corps' St. Paul District says that they have purchased 1,000 acres of land southeast of Kellogg, Iowa which will serve as permanent storage site for silt dredged from the Mississippi River in Pool 5.

Each year, the Corps removes about 120,000 cubic yards of material from Pool 5 to keep the channel navigable for barge traffic.  Initially, about 75 acres of the property will be used for storing dredge spoils.  Another 300 acres are considered to be wetlands, and the remainder will be leased as farmland........

The Meandering Mississippi River

Photo Taken From Space Shows River's Divergence From State Boundaries........

The Mississippi River has been used to define the boundaries of several states in the United States' Heartland.  A recent photo taken by an astronaut aboard the International Space Station offers a look at how the meandering of the Mississippi River has affected those state borders.

Over time, the river meanders across the floodplain, and due to the changes in the channel's position, some farms, rural lands and even towns have found themselves on the opposite bank of the river.

Over the centuries, the turbulent meandering of the Mississippi River has transformed the floodplain, creating oxbow lakes and carving new channels in the surrounding landscape........

Lake Michigan Near South Haven, Michigan

10 People Were Overcome By Carbon Monoxide........

Authorities in Michigan report that early Saturday evening, 10 people that were aboard a boat on Lake Michigan were sickened after being exposed to carbon monoxide.

Around 2:45 pm Saturday afternoon, the authorities received a distress call from the captain of the 32 foot vessel, which was traveling from St. Joseph to South Haven, Michigan.

Responders intercepted the vessel near the South Haven Pier.  Reportedly, all 10 people were evaluated and treated at the hospital........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Water Safety Council, MSHP Honor Local Heroes........

The Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Water Patrol Division recently presented a Citation of Valor award to the owner of Bridgeview Marina, Greg Newell and employees Ainsley Cusick, Daisie Reinhart and Craig Berry for their brave actions on May 2, 2020.

On that day, a watercraft was fueling at the Bridgeview Marina gas dock, when an explosion ejected two people from the boat.  The dock crew hit the fuel pump emergency shut-off,. cut the vessel free of the dock and dove into the water to rescue the people in the water.  Another boater assisted in the rescue efforts. Unfortunately, one of the boat's occupants did not survive the explosion.

The swift action of these heroes saved lives and prevented a potentially catastrophic fire of the surrounding docks, fuel storage tanks, pumps and other vessels........

Lamborghini Introducing A 63 Foot Yacht........

Lamborghini has teamed up with The Italian Sea Group to build the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63, which is a collaboration with the car-builder that will be offered on a limited basis to pay homage to Lamborghini's founding in 1963.

The project came to life through several collaborative sessions with Lamborghini's Centro Stile and was inspired by the Lamborghini Sian FKP 37, which is a hybrid supercar that features technology and customizable details.

The yacht will be rigged with a pair of 2,000 horsepower MAN V-12 engines, allowing the it to reach an estimated 70 MPH, making it the fastest in the Tecnomar fleet.  Typical of Lamborghini, the yacht will be constructed with carbon fiber, keeping the vessel's weight down to 24 tons........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Angler Lands 60 Pound Catfish From The Dock........

It took Jack Tyler more than an hour to land a hefty catfish, and once he brought it onto the dock at the 3.5 Mile Marker, he saw that the blue catfish was indeed a big one.

It took two people to wrestle the 60 pound blue catfish onto the dock.  Tyler quipped that it was "An Epic battle!".  The fish was caught on a combination of bloodbait and nightcrawler.  Once the fish was filleted, it yielded 14 pounds of meat.

This was not Tyler's first big catch; on Christmas Day, 2019, he reeled in a giant channel catfish that struck on a bit of hotdog.  That fish was caught on a friend's dock near the 28 Mile Marker.  Tyler threw the fish back thinking the state record was 77 pounds. It turns out that was the record, but for flathead catfish.  The record for channel cat is 34 pounds, 10 ounces........

Over the past six months, regardless of whether we spend our days on bodies of water, deserts, or mountain ranges, many crew members aboard the great ship Earth have been keeping a weather eye open.  We've seen red skies at dawn and have been warned. Lots of folks are seriously under the weather in the midst of a raging tempest that’s not bound to the winds nor soothed by the sun. Some of us live in states that battened down the hatches, pulled up the gangplank, and quarantined those who were not already aboard before the downpour. It seems we’ve boarded a ship bound for Drakes Passage and are enduring the century’s roughest sea passage.

Sunrise, Jamestown Bridge, RI. Photo by Scott Berstein

Rather than spend my summer days being wary of lurking sharks (certain portends of death for superstitious sailors of old) I’ve been enjoying vivid coastal sunsets. Most days end with the sun hemorrhaging ruby rays into the crimson sea. These red skies are sailors’ delights.

Weather is the Jay Gatsby of Earth’s atmosphere. It moves from West to East where life seems more dazzling. Each day ends with sunlight being scattered by tiny bits of dust as high pressure sinks the air. Red skies at sunset portent that morning will bear no bad weather and threaten tomorrow. Each sunset finds us on the cusp of a new chapter in our lives.

Narragansett, RI. Photo by Scott Berstein

Given the risks of sailing and the fact that for most of maritime history sailors couldn’t swim, and all boats leaked, “goodbye” is a word not to be uttered upon a ship. My grandkids and I always sing goodnight to the sunshine and thank it for a really great day. I never fall asleep without hope for another great day. I know the color of the sky can’t promise a safe passage through any day or night. The best I can do, just in case dawn is born by red skies, is whisper a prayer for fair winds and following seas and hope these blessings are shared by you.

Jim's Dock, Jerusalem, RI. Photo by Scott Berstein

Note: We are all rounding the Horn this summer. It's a scary time for whether you look off the port or starboard rails, it's clear we've not left this maelstrom a'stern. Scott Berstein is a Narragansett local, who I believes winter's-over as a teacher. I found his posts on the local Face Book groups for Narragansett and South Kingstown. Scott set up a challenge to capture "perfect" sunset and sunrise venues in southern Rhode Island. His photos are posted at the beginning and end of each of these summer days. I can't thank him enough for bringing forth hope and peace, and the promise of "carpe diem.".

Flood Insurance

A Quick Guide To Filing For Flood Insurance........

The cost of flooding can be devastating, and according to Farmers Insurance, approximately 50 percent of floods occur during the summer months.  There are plenty of questions surrounding flood insurance, and here is the answers to some of them:

How much will flood repairs cost?  FEMA reports that only 1 inch of water inside a home can cost over $25,000 to repair, and a foot of water can cost over $29,000 in repairs for a 1,000 square foot home.

Will Homeowners or renters insurance cover flood damage?  Most homeowners or renters policies will not cover flood damage without a specific flood insurance plan........

 River History....

August 1, 1993 in River History

During flood of 1993 the USS Inaugural broke loose from her moorings on the Mississippi River in downtown St. Louis at the Gateway Arch. The ship floated down river, hit the Popular Street Bridge, suffered a breach in her hull, took on water and rolled on to her port side.
The USS Inagral sank on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River about half a mile south of the Poplar Street Bridge. She remains in that location, on her port side, partially submerged.

Historic Steamboats

A Look At The 8th Steamer Natchez........

If you find yourself in New Orleans, make sure to reserve some time to visit the Natchez along the Toulouse Street Wharf.  This Natchez was built in 1975 and is the ninth steamboat to have the name.  All of the preceding Natchez boats were sidewheelers, except the eighth incarnation.

The eighth Natchez was built by the Howard Shipyard along the Ohio River at Jeffersonville, Indiana and launched in 1891.  The vessel cost $43,000 and was 225 feet in length and 40 feet wide.  She was powered by engines with 20 cylinders and an 8 foot stroke.  Three boilers provided the steam.

In November 1896, the Natchez sank in the Mississippi River, just upstream of it's namesake city, with some 1,700 bales of cotton and 8,757 sacks of seeds aboard.  The cause of the sinking was attributed to dry hull seams........
