Table Rock Lake
Sunday Marked 2 Year Anniversary Of
Duck Boat Tragedy........
Sunday marked the two year anniversary of
the amphibious duck boat capsizing on Table Rock Lake,
claiming the lives of 17 passengers. On July 19, 2018, a
Ride the Ducks tourist vessel was overcome by a storm and
sank with 31 passengers aboard. One crew member and 16
passengers drowned. Nine of the victims were from the same
family.
The report from the National
Transportation Safety Board indicates that the National
Weather Service had issued a severe Storm Warning with
enough notice that the vessel could have been stopped from
entering the water.
In April of 2020, the U.S. Coast Guard
concurred with the NTSB recommendation that canopies and
side curtains be removed from the duck boats. As of April,
the vessel's owner, Ripley Entertainment had settled 31
lawsuits filed by survivors or relatives of the
victims.........

Cumberland River Near Paducah,
Kentucky
Barge Strike Causes U.S. 60 Bridge
TO Close For Inspection........
The U.S. 60 Cumberland River Bridge has
reopened after being closed for inspection following a barge
strike Sunday evening. A certified bridge inspector from
the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet performed a safety check
on the span and found no structural damage to the bridge's
structure or support pier.
The U.S. Coast Guard reports that around
5:40 pm, 11 loaded rock barges broke free from a fleeting
area near navigation mile point 5 along the Cumberland
River. Six of the barges were reported to have been secured
together, with the remainders drifting downstream
individually.
The Coast Guard reports that the Motor
Vessel Patriot was nearby and was able to round up
all of the wayward barges by about 6:45 pm. The span was
closed for approximately 90 minutes for the safety
inspection, and reopened around 7:30 pm........

Mississippi River At Cape
Girardeau, Missouri
Catfish Tournament Draws 140
Anglers ........
On Saturday, the Twisted Cat Outdoor
Fishing Series hosted their fifth annual cat fishing
tournament at the Red Star Access in Cape Girardeau,
Missouri, which attracted 56 fishing groups, 140 anglers and
loads of spectators to the Mississippi River.
Catfish enthusiasts flooded Cape
Girardeau from all across the Midwest, including anglers
from up to 500 miles away. Many seemed to hold a common
belief, that fishing is a lifetime hobby shared with family.
Alex Nagy, the director of the tournament
announced the final results to the crowds as the catfish
were weighed and released at the end of the day. The group
of Degan Sanders, Lance Picker and Rylea Lohman took first
place with the largest catfish weighing in at 57.99 pounds,
and a group total of 126.42 pounds........

The Mississippi River at St. Louis dropped below flood stage for the first
time since March 16, 2019. It had been above flood stage for 127 straight

Tygart River Near Morgantown, West
Virginia
Boat Flees After Striking, Injuring
Swimmer........
Officers with the West Virginia Division of
Natural Resources report that on Saturday afternoon, a boat
struck a 22 year old swimmer in the Tygart River, causing
serious injuries.
The boat with five men aboard reportedly
slowed for a moment after the accident, then sped away north
towards the Benton's Ferry Bridge. The seriously injured
swimmer was pulled from the water by rescuers and taken to a
hospital in Morgantown.
Authorities are searching for the five men
and the boat, which is described as a white runabout speedboat
with a yellow zigzag pattern down the sides. Witnesses say that
prior to the 4:35 incident, the men were boating in an area
lined with homes, camps and other boaters........

Compost From River Sediment........
Paul Rosenbohm, the proprietor of Better
Earth compost typically mixes lawn waste, food scraps and
pumpkin residue from local farms into his compost, however,
he has stumbled upon another ingredient for his mix:
sediment from the Illinois River.
The sediment is located nearby, is in
virtually unlimited quantity, but is also a bit challenging
to obtain. Rosenbohm says that the sediment has to be
dredged from the river and then transported.
According to the experts, river sediment
is essentially soil that has run off of farm fields across
Illinois and would make excellent filler or even topsoil.

The Meandering Mississippi River
Take A Look At
From Space........
Over the years, the meandering Mississippi River has been
used to define state boundaries in the central United
States. As the river meanders over time, the channels shift
across the floodplain, leaving some farms, towns and rural
lands on the opposite bank of the river.
Over thousands of years, the turbulent meandering
Mississippi River has transformed it's floodplains, creating
oxbow lakes and slicing new channels into the surrounding
landscape.
Lake Chicot is held as the largest oxbow lake in the United
States, covering some 5,300 acres, and serves as a reminder
of where the Mighty Mississippi River once flowed in
Arkansas........

Cruise News
U.S. Ban On Cruise Ships Extended
Through September.........
On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention announced that they were extending a no-sail
order that was slated to expire on July 24th. The order, signed
by CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield, claims that the cruise
industry has not contained the spread of COVID-19 on it's ships.
The CDC claims that they are concerned that
cruise ships currently operating with reduced crews are
complying with procedures intended to prevent virus
transmission.
This order involves ships that can carry 250
or more passengers. The CDC states that cruise ships are more
crowded than most urban settings, and even with only the
essential crew aboard the COVID-19 virus is still
spreading........

Mississippi River At Alton,
Illinois
City To Vote On Revised Cruise Line
Agreement........
On Monday at 6 pm, the Alton Aldermen
will be meeting as the committee of the whole to discuss an
ordinance that authorizes amendments to the city's lease
agreement with American Cruise Lines.
This ordinance is crucial to American
Cruise Lines' intentions of porting three of the company's
riverboats in Alton beginning in August. In order for the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to approve of the lease
agreement, the Corps listed several changes that need to be
made.
Earlier this year, the Corps sent a
letter to Greg Caffey, Director of Alton Planning and
Development stating that the sublease provided cannot be
approved as it currently is because it is not in compliance
with the city's current lease........

Missouri River At Jefferson City,
Missouri
Mo. Gov. Signs Bill Authorizing
Jefferson City Port........
On Tuesday, the Heartland Port Authority
of Central Missouri announced that with the signage of House
Bill 1330 by Missouri Governor Mike Parson, the port
authority has been given 116 acres to develop a port along
the Missouri River at Jefferson City.
Heartland Port Authority Chairman Rick
Mihalevich says that the legislation gives them the go-ahead
to develop the property adjacent to the port and hopefully
allow it to generate commerce.
The development of a port along the
Missouri River in Jefferson City has been years in the
making. The Heartland Port Authority is the 15th port
authority in Missouri and will serve the Central Missouri
region........

Ohio River At Cairo, Illinois
The Cairo Bridge Set To Close For
30 Days........
Officials recently announced that the
U.S. 51 Ohio River "Cairo" Bridge will be closing in August
for a month, to allow crews to perform extensive maintenance
to the span which links Wickliffe, Kentucky and Cairo,
Illinois.
The bridge closure will allow crews to
work along a 2 mile section of Kentucky approach levee and
perform critical work on the bridge deck as well as on the 2
mile Kentucky approach levee.
According to Kyle Poat, a transportation
engineer with the Kentucky Cabinet for transportation,
officials had reviewed six options for completing the
required work and determined that a 30 day closure would be
best........

Boating Opinions
Boating Is A Favorite American
Pastime........
Frank Hugelmeyer, president of the National
Marine Manufacturers Association recently penned an opinion
piece for Fox Business discussing why boating is the ideal
summer pastime during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Noting the disappointment that many people
are dealing with due to canceled vacations, closed community
pools and closed summer camps in addition to the stress that
COVID-19 has had on the nation, Hugelmeyer says that more
families are hitting the water as a means to escape.
Hugelmeyer writes that first time boat buyers
are increasing as Americans realize that boating is one of the
safest and most accessible pastimes for enjoying quality time
with their loved ones........

Meramec River Near Sullivan,
Missouri
9 Year Old Recovering After Raft
Struck By Boat........
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is
calling on boaters and floaters along the Meramec River to
be careful and remain alert after a serious accident that
left four boys injured after a boat struck their canoe near
Sullivan on Sunday.
Sarah Dull states that she and her
husband were excited about their first family float trip.
The family of five was floating on a raft along the Meramec
River when a boat struck them head-on. Dull's husband and
two sons were ejected into the river. Her eldest son
suffered minor back injuries, howeverm her 9 year old son
was seriously injured and air lifted to a hospital with
serious injuries.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol charged
25 year old Codey McNamee, the boat driver, with Boating
While Intoxicated. According to MSHP Corporal Juston
Wheetlery, McNamee was traveling at an excessive rate of
speed and was not at the boat's helm at the time of the
collision........

Boating Safety Equipment
Sea Tow Foundation Launches Flare Disposal
Program........
There have always been questions about what to do
about the disposal of expired signal flares. There are no state or
federal agencies tasked with dealing with expired flares, so most
would drop them off with the local fire department to deal with.
Now, the non-profit Sea Tow Foundation is hoping
to change all that with the introduction of a flare disposal
program. The foundation was recently awarded a grant from the U.S.
Coast Guard Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund to kick off
a pilot program for the proper disposal of flares.
The USCG requires all boaters in coastal waters,
the Great Lakes and waters that are adjacent are required to be
equipped with flares. Coast Guard requirements state that flares
expire 42 months after the date of manufacture........

River
History....
July 16, 1993 in
River History
Flood of 1993
On Tuesday, July 16, 1993, the West Quincy Levee broke, allowing
flood waters to inundate the Fabius Drainage District. Several barges were
pulled through the hole in the levee, one sank, and another collided with a
gas station, causing an oil slick and a fire. The levee breach was a shock,
as the Mississippi River had crested in the region three days prior, and was
on the way down. Jimmy Scott had been arrested, and later convicted of
moving sandbags, and causing the levee breach. He is serving a life
sentence........

Tampa Boat Show Cancelled........
The National Marine Manufacturers Association
has announced that they are canceling this year's Progressive
Insurance Tampa Boat Show, which was scheduled for September 11
- 13, 2020 at the Tampa Convention Center, due to the spread of
the COVID-19 virus.
Jennifer Thompson, Senior Vice President of
NMMA Boat and Sports Shows says that they had been hoping that
the show would go on amid the evolving COVID situation, however,
the cancellation is the wisest choice for the health and safety
of all involved.
THompson adds that they are looking forward,
and are excited to bring the Tampa Boat Show back next year,
which is currently scheduled for September 10 - 12, 2021 at the
Tampa Convention Center........

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Corps: Drownings Increased During
June........
On Monday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
officials announced that over 30 people lost their lives to
drownings on lakes and river projects managed by the Corps.
The June stats are a 47 percent increase in
drownings over June of last year. The vast majority of the
drowning victims were adult males between 18 and 85 years of age
and were not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incidents.
Pam Dory, USACE National Water Safety Program
Manager says that since many beaches and community pools closed
because of the COVID-19 pandemic, more people are wading,
swimming, floating and playing in open water areas not
designated for swimming........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois
Alton's Pedestrian Bridge Should Reopen
Soon........
Officials say that Alton's pedestrian Bridge
over Landmarks Boulevard should be reopening within a month or
so, weather permitting. The bridge had been closed
approximately a month ago after routine inspections uncovered
concerns that prompted the current closure and scheduled
repairs.
According to Alton Public Works Director Bob
Barnhart, they caught the problems before they became critical.
The inspection found that some handrails and a post had shifted,
and the concrete had broken away at the base.
Barnhart says that they wanted to make sure
to close the bridge for repair work before the loose concrete
ended up somewhere it shouldn't, such as Landmarks Boulevard
below.........

Famous Lakes
"Dirty Dancing" Lake Filling Up
Again........
Back in 2008, Mountain Lake, made famous in
the film, "Dirty Dancing" dried up and stayed that way for
better than a decade. This summer, however, the lake is filling
up again.
Mountain Lake is considered to be a mecca for
the hardcore Dirty Dancing fan that traveled to the Pembroke,
Virginia to see the landmnarks featured in the movie.
The lake where the famous lift scene was
practiced is not what it used to be. In 1999, the water level
first dropped, but it came back in 2003. The lake level dropped
once again, and by 2008, it was completely dry.......

River
History....
July 15, 1815 in River History
War of 812
Portage Des Sioux Blockhoue and Fort Lookout (Mo)
On April 8, 1813, General Daniel Bissell of Fort Bellefontaine and
territorial governor Benjamin Howard chose Portage de Sioux, Missouri to
build a military post. Captain Desha with a subaltern and fifty-one men were
instructed to build a blockhouse at Portage de Sioux. To protect the
builders, a large fortified gunboat was left in the river near the
blockhouse. To further watch and protect St. Louis, it was decided to place
a battery of artillery on a island in the middle of the river just south of
the village of Portage de Sioux. This battery was called Fort Lookout.
On July 15, 1815, a treaty was signed with the Indians near the blockhouse
thus more or less ending the Indian attacks on the settlements.

Release From BoatUS
This Summer, EPA Isn’t Making It Any Easier
for Boaters To Choose the Right Fuel for Their Boats
Harris Poll: Only 22% of consumers know that ‘regular 88’ fuel
has more engine-harming ethanol than 87 octane fuel
SPRINGFIELD, Va., July 14, 2020 – With summer
boating season in full swing, it’s now common to see
recreational boats being filled up at gas stations across the
country. However, making sure the right fuel gets in the boat’s
tank isn’t always assured: 54% of consumers in a recent Harris
Poll believed that the small orange E15 fuel warning label on a
gas station pump isn’t good enough to protect consumers. Poll
respondents believe the label, about the size of a pack of gum,
needs to be larger, clearer and mandatory on all gas station
fuel-dispensing pumps. E15 (fuel containing 15% ethanol) is
prohibited by federal law for use in recreational boat engines
and voids many marine engine warranties.
“It’s clear that the Environmental Protection Agency has not
done enough to protect boat owners and a range of consumers,”
said Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS)
Manager of Government Affairs David Kennedy. “Some fuels are
being marketed and sold to consumers as low-cost alternatives
but without having the necessary clear warnings on the pump that
highlight increased ethanol content. ‘Regular 88’ fuel,
typically the cheapest choice at the pump, contains 15% ethanol
(E15), enough to harm a vessel’s motor and void the engine
manufacturer’s warranty. Only 22% of consumers in the Harris
Poll correctly identified the fuel as E15.”
“We are cautioning our members this summer that they may find
badly labeled fuel choices at the pump and inadequate education
around ethanol-blended fuels that were never intended for
recreational vessels,” Kennedy added. Boaters have no love for
ethanol in their gas due to the proven damage it causes to boat
engines and fuel systems.
BoatUS, along with additional stakeholders, is asking why, after
consistent urging, EPA has not done a better job warning
boaters, those with gasoline-powered equipment, and vehicle
owners not warrantied for fuels above E10 to stay away from this
new generation of higher ethanol fuels intended to increase
America’s consumption of government-subsidized corn-based
ethanol.
In comments filed June 29 by BoatUS and its partners on EPA’s
proposed Fuels Regulatory Streamlining rulemaking provisions on
mitigating misfueling with 10.5% to 15% ethanol (E15) fuels, the
group of consumer and industry associations said, “As EPA has
worked to broaden the availability of E15 in the U.S., including
most recently in last year’s repeal of seasonal restrictions on
the sale of higher-blend ethanol fuels, our organizations have
consistently urged EPA to implement a more effective Misfueling
Mitigation Program. … The misfueling of marine engines and
vessels, off-road vehicles, motorcycles, and outdoor power
equipment places significant burdens on both the American
consumer and product manufacturers. Risks outlined for consumers
include potential product damage and/or compromised performance,
economic loss and potentially unsafe products.”
The partners urge public education efforts; improvement to the
ethanol content warning label type, size and pump location;
evaluating the adoption of different fuel pump nozzle sizes;
ceasing misleading marketing of ethanol fuels; evaluating the
use of physical barriers and keypad systems; and offering a
dedicated pump for E0 (0% ethanol) fuel.

Cleanup Begins Following Weekend Marina
Fire........
On Monday, the cleanup started following a
massive fire on Pier 11 of the Green Turtle Bay Resort that
occurred during the early hours of Sunday morning. According to
witnesses the damages could have been much worse if not for the
efforts of fellow boaters and fire fighters.
Cassie Miller reports that the owner of an
adjacent boat tried extinguish the fire, but ended up having to
cut the burning houseboat loose as the blaze grew too hot and
spread too fast. Unfortunately, the wind pushed the boat back
into the dock.
Of the nine boats destroyed by the fire, only
one was still visible on Monday. Green Turtle Bay Resort says
that the sunken boats will be removed from the marina sometime
this week. The cause of the blaze is still under
investigation........

Boating Safety
IDNR: Have Fun On The Water, But Be
Responsible........
Following a long winter and the ongoing
COVID-19 outbreak shutting down many choices for summer fun,
many Illinoisans have turned to the water for recreation.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources
reports that they are seeing an increase in traffic along the
state's waterways. As a result, the IDNR has issued a reminder
to boaters that if they enjoy alcohol on the water, make sure to
do it responsibly.
According to Nick Reid, an Illinois
Conservation Police Officer, it is legal to have open alcohol on
a boat and for the operator to drink it. It is still illegal,
however, for the boat operator to be impaired or intoxicated, so
their message is this: Have fun, but do it responsibly........

Mark Twain Lake
An Increase In Visitors ........
So far this summer, fishing and outdoors
activities at Mark Twain Lake have been going strong amid the
COVID-19 pandemic which has limited outdoor entertainment
options.
Kurt Meyer, owner of Cannon Dam General Store
& Cabins says that fishing, camping and boating have been very
strong and that people seem to be turning to outdoor activities
because a lot of indoor activities have been cancelled.
The boat ramps at Mark Twain Lake opened up
in early May, and the lake has seen an increase in visitors
fishing ever since. Suzanne Quigley, operations manager of
Indian Creek Marina says that weekday traffic has increased, and
there have been plenty of people out on the weekends........

Mississippi River Near St. Charles,
Missouri
Responders Search For Missing Man In
The Main Channel........
Early Sunday afternoon, a 49 year old man and
his girlfriend took their pontoon boat out for a cruise along
the Mississippi River. A short time later, the man reportedly
decided to anchor out about a mile south of Two Branch Marina so
he could jump in the river and use the bathroom.
The man's girlfriend reports that shortly
after entering the water, the man began calling for help and was
having a difficult time staying afloat. Once the man was
completely submerged, she began to flag down other boats for
help. The man has not been seen since.
At around 3:00 pm, the St. Charles Central
County Fire & Rescue Department arrived on scene. The Missouri
State Highway Patrol, the St. Charles City Fire Department, the
Illinois Conservation Department and the Orchard Farm Fire
Protection District all joined in on the search........

Mississippi River Cruising
Viking Has Announced Additional
Bookings For 2023........
Viking River Cruises recently announced that
they were booking Mississippi River cruises for the 2023
season. The company's first riverboat, the Viking Mississippi will
have her maiden voyage in August 2022, and will cruise the Upper
and Lower Mississippi River between New Orleans and St. Paul.
Viking stated that several cruises have sold
out for the 2022 season, and that the strong demand was a major
factor in deciding to begin selling 2023 sailing dates sooner
rather than later.
Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking, says that
they are pleased with the initial response and support from
guests as well as from community partners along the Mississippi
River. He adds that they are looking forward to bringing moder
river cruising to the Mississippi River in 2022........

Boat Manufacturer
Groupe Beneteau Paring Down Their
Offerings........
On Thursday, Groupe Beneteau revealed their
modified five year strategy with the announcement that they will
be moving from 12 strategic brands to eight, including Beneteau,
Jeanneau, Prestige, Lagoon, Four Winns, Wellcraft, Delphia and
Excess.
Groupe Beneteau CEO Jerome de Metz says that
the remaining four brands will have the chance to continue their
stories via new partnerships or joint ventures currently under
discussion. Glastron and Scarab are among the four brands that
Groupe will not be focusing on moving forward.
The company's new plan, called Lets Go
Beyond, is based on three pillars:
○ Groupe Beneteau will build its strategy
around the eight brands but will cover the same number of market
segments with reduced investments.
○ It seeks to make plants more efficient to accelerate
development times.
○ The company will seek more streamlined managerial
organization structured around global core functions........

The era of the duck boat ride
effectively arrived with the 2018 sinking of a duck boat on
Table Rock Lake near Branson, Missouri, which claimed the lives

The duck boats, (Military Name DUK-W)

during the latter part of World War II/ Now, they are being
auctioned off as ride owners discontinue operations.
Including the Branson passengers,
there have been 40 people killed aboard duck boats over the past
20 years. With potential liabilities looming, insurance

Without the lock system, the falls themselves would be a natural barrier for
the invasive silver carp and bighead carp. The falls reach a height of
almost 50 feet, too high for most invasive as well as native fishes to
travel up.

Lower Mississippi River
Corps Calling Off Flood-Fight
Operations.
The Mississippi River at New
Orleans, Louisiana has finally fallen below 11 feet at the
Carrolton gauge, which is the trigger point for Phase I flood
fight operations along the Lower Mississippi River. The U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers announced the end of their flood fight
efforts on June 30, 2020.
The Corps had started their flood
fight efforts on January 9th, 2020, when the River rose above
the 11 foot threshold. In total, the Mississippi River at New
Orleans has spent 93 days above 15 feet, the trigger point for
Phase II Flood Fight Efforts.
When the Mississippi River warrants
flood fight efforts to begin, crews perform levee inspections
and construction limitations are put into place within 1,500
feet of river levees........
