Caio Bella

Owner.. Michael Hentrich

The Chris is a ’56 continental 18’ long with a flywheel forward 283. I brought her to Dow, IL from Patriot, IN in 2006 and spent 3 yrs installing a new 5200 bottom in addition to complete restoration. She doesn’t see the water often enough, but retirement is just around the corner! I have christened her “Caio Bella” in honor of a beautiful time in our boating history.

National Safe Boating Week Starts Today........

On Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard will be kicking off National Safe Boating Week, which is an annual event that promotes safe and responsible boating as well as the value of consistent life jacket use by recreational boaters.

National Safe Boating Week runs from May 19 - 25, and marks the beginning of the 2018 North American Safe Boating Campaign that is endorsed and promoted by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard is reminding boaters to be responsible while out on the water by making sure to wear life jackets, attaching your engine cut-off switch, getting a free vessel safety check, avoiding alcohol or other impairing substances, file a float plan, and even take a boater safety class........

Fish Consumption Advisory Updated........

Updated Illinois Sport Fish Consumption Advisory

18th May, 2018

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today announced an updated consumption advisory for sport fish caught in Illinois waters. These changes are the result of continued sampling by the Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program and do not suggest that Illinois fish are becoming more or less contaminated.

“We encourage people to enjoy fishing in Illinois lakes and rivers, but want to make sure you have information about eating fish that are caught in Illinois waters. The advisories are not meant to discourage people from eating fish, but should be used as a guideline to help anglers and their families decide the types of fish to eat, how frequently, and how to prepare fish for cooking to reduce possible contaminants,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D.

There is no known immediate health hazard from eating contaminated fish from any body of water in Illinois. The main concern for regularly eating fish listed on the advisories is the effect of long-term exposure to low levels of pesticides and chemicals, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, chlordane, and methylmercury.

The program is a joint effort of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and the departments of Natural Resources and Public Health. The fish are collected by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and tested by IEPA. IDPH issues fish consumption advisories based on the IEPA test results. The updated advisory and detailed information can be found on the IDPH website: http://dph.illinois.gov/topics-services/environmental-health-protection/toxicology/fish-advisories/map

Terminally Ill Man Spending His Remaining Life On The River........

About two years ago, Wisconsin native Kelly Phillips was diagnosed with sinus cancer, and after suffering complications from chemotherapy he was told that he ad three months to live.

Phillips spoke with his brother and told him that he did not want to die in hospice.  He asked his brother to find him a houseboat on the Mississippi River, as that is where he wanted to die.

On March 15, 2017, Phillips arrived in Madison, Wisconsin and took delivery of his new home.  He hit the river the next day with his dog, Sapphire, and has been there ever since.  Since May 8, the duo has been in Memphis........

Boating, Floating Opportunities Around The Riverbend........

The St. Louis Metro Region is far from being landlocked, as the area is surrounded by the Mississippi, Meramec, and Missouri Rivers and their tributaries.  This means that there are plenty of opportunities to boat, float or paddle.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch recently assembled a list of 11 destinations around the Riverbend area that is perfect for boating, floating and camping.

Making the list is Pere Marquette State Park, Bass River Resort, Hawn State Park, Johnson Shut-Ins State Park, Mina Sauk Fells Trail, and Meramec Caverns........

Boat of the Day on this Day in 2017 .......

1964 Owens 33ft Cruiser

Owner  Dennis Day

It's Dennis Day's 1964 Owens Cruiser docked at Grafton Harbor after her maiden voyage last Saturday .

A bit of history on her...

The Antique and Classic Boat Society Society rescued this wooden boat from a backyard in Ferguson, Mo.

Tom and Lou Lenkman had it stored at their river house on the Dardenne Slough for about three years and then sold it to Dennis.

Dennis has restored her and took her out last Saturday on her maiden voyage.  What a beauty !

Dennis... Have you named her yet ?

Illinois Boat Registration and Safety Act Amendments Take
Effect June 1

Watercraft registration expiration date changed;
Water Usage Stamp repealed

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is alerting watercraft owners of changes in the Illinois Boat Registration and Safety Act that take effect on June 1, 2018.

The changes push back the expiration date of three-year Illinois watercraft registrations from June 30 to Sept. 30. For example, watercraft owners who renew their three-year registrations that are expiring on June 30, 2018 will have new registrations that are valid until Sept. 30, 2021.

All new and transfer renewal watercraft registrations issued on or after June 1, 2018 will have expiration dates of Sept. 30 in the calendar year of expiration.

Another change removes the requirement of a certificate of title for watercraft under 22 feet in length.

In addition, the change in law repeals the Water Usage Stamp that has been required for use of nonpowered watercraft in Illinois.

Barge Struck River Bridge, Sank........

At least one barge has sunk after a tow of 30 barges struck a bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Vicksburg, Mississippi.  U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Erik Brehaut says that on Thursday, the towboat Jeffrey G was southbound when the barges hit the bridge.

The reports were not clear as to which or the two Mississippi River bridges at Vicksburg was struck.  Both the KC Southern Railway and the Interstate 20 bridges remained open.

According to Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace, after the collision, several barges broke free and one sank.  Pace added that a few Ergon Marine vessels assisted in rounding up the wayward barges........

News Release From BoatUS

Affordable On-Water Powerboat Training for Families, Teens At Boating Safety Day Saturday, June 2, at Wilson Point Park

MIDDLE RIVER, Md., May 17, 2018 – Want to learn the basics of powerboating with your teen, or brush up on your close quarters powerboat handling skills? On Saturday, June 2, the nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water together with TowBoatUS Baltimore/Middle River will offer a choice of two fun on-water training courses taught aboard 20- to 26-foot powerboats: “Crew Camp – Boat With Your Teen” and ‘Close Quarters Boat Control” at the Third Annual Sgt. Marvin T. Haw IV Boating Safety Day at Wilson Point Park at 950 Beech Drive in Baltimore County.

The goal of the BoatUS Foundation and TowBoatUS Baltimore/Middle River courses are to address the high costs typically associated with at-the-helm training, making it easier and more affordable to gain practical hands-on powerboat skills and boating safety education. The courses also offer area residents the chance to try out recreational boating, and gives boaters the opportunity to brush up on their skills before the summer boating season.

Class size is limited to four students per vessel, ensuring each student gets sufficient time at the helm under the watchful eye of a qualified instructor. Both courses are 3-hours long. The “Crew Camp – Boat with Your Teen” course covers shifting and steering, basic docking, and basic navigation. It is priced at only $179 for both parent and teen, and starts at 11:30 a.m. The “Close Quarters Boat Control” course covers shifting and steering, basic docking and navigation, is priced at $129 per person, and starts at 12 noon. Each student taking a course will receive a free Body Glove Float Coat.

Space is limited. Students enrolled in “Crew Camp” must be between 13 and 18 years old and accompanied by a parent or guardian. Students must be at least 18 years of age to participate in “Close Quarters Boat Control.” To sign up for a course, go to https://bit.ly/2G5kqka.

During Boating Safety Day visitors are encouraged to participate in water-safety demonstrations, enjoy food from local food vendors, and meet with local marine businesses. For those who just want to experience being out on the water, “Free Boating Safety Rides” are offered on a first come, first served basis and include a 20-minute ride around the lagoon with a captain to learn about boating safety and the importance of safety equipment on the boat. The rides are provided by the BoatUS Foundation and TowBoatUS Baltimore/Middle River with vessels provided by Riverside Marine and Tradewinds Marina

River History....

May 17, 1849 in River History

A devastating fire destroyed a significant part of St. Louis and many of the steamboats on the St. Louis riverfront. This was the first fire in United States history in which it is known that a firefighter was killed in the line of duty.

The St. Louis Great Fire of 1849 was started on the evening of May 17, 1849 by a smoldering mattress aboard the steamboat White Cloud.  The fire quickly spread to an adjoining steamboat, the Edward Bates, which burnt free of her moorings located on what is now Laclede's Landing.  She drifted downriver, spreading fire as she went.  In a half an hours time, 23 steamboats were on fire.  The Great Fire would claim 418 buildings along 15 blocks...

Fire captain Thomas Targee sent orders for soldiers to use kegs of gunpowder to blow up buildings in order to create a fire-stop. His idea worked to an extent, but he was killed in one of the explosions.

We offer full fiberglass repair, high performance upgrades, transom & stringer rebuilds, service on older products, new & used parts department, an accessories department, as well as many other services to suit everyone's boating needs.

We continue to display our Yamaha Sport Boats + Crest, Mercury + Yamaha Outboards and Heritage & Haul Rite trailers

Cobalt Filed Contempt Motion Against Brunsiick........

Cobalt Boats, LLC recently filed a motion in federal court that claims that Brunswick Corp's Sea Ray brand violated an injunction order by continuing to infringe on Cobalt's patent on their retractable swim step.

Cobalt is claiming that Sea Ray continues to infringe on their patent, despite a jury finding that Sea Ray willfully infringed on Cobalt's patent, as well as a court order permanently barring Sea Ray from further infringement.

Cobalt states that the swim steps currently sold on Sea Ray vessels are not significantly different than the swim steps installed on Sea Ray vessels that a jury found to be infringing on Cobalt's patent........

News Release

May 15, 2018
EMPHASIS: Extra Caution Encouraged Around Boat Docks

Colonel Sandra Karsten, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, encourages boat dock owners to take the necessary precautions to make their dock safe from stray electrical current. Tingling and numbness in the extremities while swimming in the water has been a common statement made by individuals who survived incidents involving electrical current near docks. Swimming away from any dock suspected to be charged with electricity is the safest course of action. Exiting the water at the shoreline, a safe distance from the electrically charged dock, or swimming to a nearby dock, would be the alternative. It should be noted, if there are metal dock cables securing the electrically charged dock to the shoreline, the metal cables may be charged with electricity and should be avoided also.

There are specific regulations on many of Missouri's lakes. Dock owners should adhere to the regulations set forth by the dock permitting authority.

“Warm weather has arrived in Missouri and many people will begin enjoying time on our state's lakes and rivers," said Colonel Karsten. "While it is convenient to have electricity available on a boat dock, it is important to be responsible. Make sure you have taken the necessary precautions for your dock, so the area is safe for your family and friends to enjoy.”

Life jackets are always a good choice when on or near a dock. All swimmers are encouraged to use a life jacket, especially young children and inexperienced swimmers. Whether you're swimming near a dock or fishing from one, chose to Wear It!

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Hannibal To Completely Replace Lighthouse and Add New Lighting........

A year ago, the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department announced that the Mark Twain Lighthouse would be undergoing it's first major overhaul since 1994.  Those plans, however, have changed.

During Tuesday's meeting of the Hannibal City Council, Parks Director Andy Dorian stated that the lighthouse would be completely replaced.  Dorian notes that this is not a surprise, as they had been patching it together for some time.

An engineering study was commissioned last fall, and it was determined that it would not be feasible to repair the lighthouse, and that replacement would be the best option.  Dorian says that once completed, the Hannibal Board of Public Works will install lighting equipment that will allow the city to illuminate the structure in a variety of different colors........

16 May of 1979 in River History
The news along the St. Louis Riverfront was grim on May 16, 1979, as that was the day a Coast Guard inspector's hammer went right through the thin, corroded hull of the S.S. Admiral.  The owners announced that cruises would stop that year.

Tom Dunn with Streckfus Steamers Inc. said that the Admiral would be sent to New Orleans for repairs, which was the nearest location with a big enough dry dock large enough to handle the Admiral.

Dunn said that they would definitely get the Admiral fixed, since they would have the entire winter to make repairs.  After assessing the damage in New Orleans, Streckfus announced that the necessary repairs were unaffordable.  The Admiral would never cruise the Mississippi River again.......

News Release

May 15, 2018
EMPHASIS: 2018 Lake Of The Ozarks Invitational Powerboat Race Navigational Information Announced

Captain Michael A. Turner, commanding officer of Troop F, Jefferson City, announces navigational restrictions for The Lake of the Ozarks Invitational Powerboat Race. This race is an annual one-day event involving high-speed boat races near Bagnell Dam on Lake of the Ozarks.

The race is scheduled for June 2, 2018. The event will take place from approximately 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Boating traffic will be restricted to no wake and idle speed from the dam to approximately the four-mile marker of the main channel. The no wake, idle speed restriction will be enforced beginning at approximately 9:30 a.m., and will continue to be enforced up to one hour after the last race.

Every attempt will be made to minimize inconvenience to boaters navigating near the race, but boaters should expect congestion in the area. There will be approximately a 100’ buffer zone maintained between the course perimeter buoy markers and the spectator boats. Spectator boats will be allowed to anchor in locations which do not restrict the normal flow of traffic around the event. Generally, anchoring near the mouth of coves will be encouraged, if congestion does not hinder ingress/egress into the cove locations. Troopers, as well as event volunteers, will be located around the course to assist boaters in locating the designated areas for spectator anchoring. Spectators wishing to anchor should anticipate needing enough anchor line for water depth potentially greater than 100 feet.

Captain Turner urges boaters to use heightened caution while exiting the area following the event due to conditions caused by the heavy boat traffic.

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!! Follow Troop F on Twitter for the most current news @MSHPTrooperF

MDC Free Fishing Days Coming Up........

Over the weekend of June 9 - 10, the Missouri Department of Conservation will be presenting their Free Fishing Days.  During this time, anyone may fish in Missouri waters without being required to purchase a fishing permit, trout permit or a trout park daily tag.

Even though anglers won't need a permit during the MDC's Free Fishing Days, the other fishing regulations will be in effect, including limits on the size and number of fish an angler may keep.

Some special permits may still be required at certain county, city or private fishing areas.  Missouri's trespass laws will remain in effect on private property........

City is Considering Tearing Down, Rebuilding Lighthouse........

During Tuesday night's Hannibal City Council meeting, the council will be considering an engineering service agreement about a project the involves the demolition of the existing Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse, and the construction of a new one.

Last year, MECO Engineering was hired to perform a structural study of the lighthouse.  The lighthouse, which was built in 1963, was found to be deteriorated to the point that MECO recommended knocking it down and building it again.

The Parks Department will be recommending that the City Council authorize the Mayor to sign an engineering service agreement with MECO to provide design, bidding as well as construction phase engineering services during the reconstruction project........

The Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation recently announced the launch of Making Waves, an initiative intended to empower women and girls on the water.

The RBFF is dedicated to promoting the empowerment of women on the water by removing perceived barriers to the sport, increasing the representation of women fishing, and the creation of a series of workshops specifically intended for women and girls.

News Release From BoatUS

National Safe Boating Week is May 19-25

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 14, 2018 – With the start of boating season and next week’s National Safe Boating Week, May 19–25, the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has three tips to get boaters thinking about safety aboard any type of boat.
1. Open up your boat for a vessel safety check: You may think getting a vessel safety check from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadrons can open yourself to problems. However, a no-risk, free vessel safety check does the opposite. It points out both the required and recommended items to have aboard, such as fire extinguishers, life jackets, distress signals, first-aid kits, and engine spark arrestors, and also helps provide a better understanding on the care and use of this critical equipment. Checks are done as a courtesy with no risk to the boater, so you won’t be in trouble if discrepancies are found. Go to https://bit.ly/1syhbDA to request a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary safety check or https://bit.ly/2I2uc8w for a U.S. Power Squadrons safety check.

2. Believe the numbers – take a safety course: Statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety show that only 13 percent of all boating deaths in 2016 occurred on vessels where the operator had taken a nationally approved boating safety education course. So take this number to heart – taking a boating safety course improves safety. The BoatUS Foundation offers free online boating safety courses that meet the education requirements in 36 states and also may earn you a boat insurance discount. Go to BoatUS.org/Free.

3. Give a safety talk before you head out: Taking out guests is half the fun of boating, but before you head out give a little talk about how to stay safe aboard your boat. Some important things to include may be how to distribute weight in a small boat, how to hold on when crossing a wake, how a tuber or water skier should safely reboard after being towed, how the VHF radio works and the location of important safety equipment. Also, give everyone a life jacket to wear or keep in his or her immediate vicinity. If you don’t have a right-sized life jacket for a youngster, borrow one for free at more than 550 locations nationwide from the BoatUS Foundation Life Jacket Loaner Program at BoatUS.org/Life-Jacket-Loaner.

Grafton Gondola Expected To Go Up For A Vote........

Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin says that the proposed Grafton Gondola project may be getting underway quite soon.  The $2 million project from Aerie's Resort would include a ski chair-like lift as well as a shuttle service that takes visitors around the city.

During a special meeting last week, Mike Weber of PGAV (the TIF consultant for the city) discussed the project with the City Council.  Mayor Eberllin sais the council may approve the TIF funding during Tuesday's meeting.

If the project is approved, the first of the 15 towers needed for the project could begin going up next month.  Eberlin adds that the free shuttle, which would be funded by lift tickets, could significantly reduce traffic during holidays and busy weekends........

Area Residents Eying The River Levels........

For the residents of the area around Quincy, Illinois, it is a game of watching and waiting as the level of the Mississippi River continues to rise.  A good part of the surrounding area is under a flood warning.

As of Sunday, the Mississippi River at Quincy was at 19.5 feet.  Flood stage is at 17 feet.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is predicting the river will crest at 20 feet on Tuesday.

Denise Brown, co-owner of The Dock, says that they know exactly where water begins flowing into their business.  She notes that when the river reaches 26 feet, they have to start clearing things out of the building........
