Probe Sought On Jetty Where Marlins Pitcher Crashed........

Wednesday, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio sent a letter to the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requesting a probe into the rock jetty where a boat crashed Sunday morning, taking the lives of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and to friends.

The probe would review the century-old jetty, and whether it poses a chronic danger to boaters.  Rubio said that the jetty extends from Miami's port, and is difficult to see at night, especially during high tide.

Rubio adds that he has firsthand experience with the jetty, and understands the challenges it presents to navigation.  The jetty is not lighted, and officials say that routine reviews determined that the existing navigational aids are adequate for safety.  The Coast Guard reports that a lighted buoy marking the channel opening at the end of the jetty was working properly........

Asian Carp Update

Carp Population Slows Near Great Lakes....  Growing Elsewhere....

Dan Stephenson with the Illinois Department of Fisheries says that the growth of the Asian carp population is slowing in northern Illinois, but increasing in other parts of the state.

Stephenson adds that along the Illinois River near Morris, Illinois, commercial fishermen catch nearly 5 million pounds of Asian carp each year, and send them to a processing plant.  He believes that the only chance to slow down the growth of the carp population is to construct processing plants to transform the fish into food or fertilizer.

According to Stephenson, the Illinois River in the Grafton area has seen a surge in the Asian carp population because the conditions for the fish are perfect........

Mississippi River Journeys

Iowa Retiree Determined To Paddle The Mississippi.........

76 year old fitness enthusiast Hans Frischeisen has biked across the United States four times, and is planning for the third time to wrap up a kayak trip down the Mississippi River.

Frischeisen says that his reason for starting these new adventures is simple:  He was a new immigrant to this country, and perhaps that motivated him to give it a shot.

He will be travelling about 500 miles, at about three miles per hour.  Frischeisen passes the time on the water writing, shaving, brushing his teeth, and even taking a nap occasionally....  without the benefit of an autopilot....

Students Patrolling The River During Oktoberfest........

On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, Students from University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, Viterbo, and Western Technical College will be participating in Operation River Watch, in an effort to keep people out of the river.

Operation River Watch formed 10 years ago after eight college students drowned in the Mississippi River between 1997 and 2006.  The students keep tabs on the river every weekend, but they say that Oktoberfest is one of the most important times to be watching the river........

Boat Manufacturer

Baja's Brands Getting Needed Resuscitation........

Joe Curran, CEO of Iconic Marine Group, who recently purchased all four brands of Baja Marine LLC, says that the venerated brands will be brought back to their former glory.

Curran does not believe that the turnaround of the four brands, which include Baja Marine, Donzi and Donzi Classic, Fountain Powerboats, and Pro-Line, will be easy.  Curran, formerly of Crest Pontoons, believes that it will be at least two model years to differentiate the brands, and get them reestablished.

Curran says that the four brands have a great following at the retail level, and that each of the brands has a distinct place and personality.  He adds that they will be developing the products for the future, while being respectful of the past........

Hi RiverBill,

I just wanted to share a few photos from Sunday's Cruise aboard the HMS Destiny.
It was a beautiful day as we departed from Alton Marina. Our first stop was at My River Home Marina where we were met by gracious hosts. We spent some time enjoying drinks, snacks, and great music at the La Rosa Bar while other guests enjoyed visiting the Longshot Saloon.

From there, we headed to Grafton and docked at the Grafton Marina for a nice evening at the Grafton Oyster Bar.

Once back underway, we had a really nice evening cruise, returning to Alton.

Thanks again to Henry for a wonderful day......

See you on the river,

Mississippi River

Healthier Than Ever, But New Pollutant Found In Sediment........

According to a report recently released by Friends of the Mississippi River, it is in many ways healthier than ever.  A new form of pollution has been discovered in the river, however, microplastics.

The report revealed that there are tiny fragments of artificial materials such as carpeting, plastic bags, clothing, tires and plastic bottles in high concentrations in the Mississippi River's sediment.

Trevor Russell, program director for Friends of the Mississippi River says that the majority of the microplastics were clothing fibers and other synthetic materials.........

Public - Private Partnerships Considered For Financing Infrastructure Projects........

As a whole, the U.S. inland waterways infrastructure is in poor condition, but there are some places that the situation is particularly grim, including the Peoria Lock and Dam and the La Grange Lock and Dam along the Illinois River.

Both of these dams were completed in 1939, and have been listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, which is a dubious distinction for a crucial transportation facility in the 21st century.

There is only so much funding available to cover all of the necessary infrastructure projects, so public - private partnerships are being considered to cover the budget shortfalls........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Dog Rescued From The Lake....  And A Trot Line....

At around 8 am last Thursday, responders with the Gravois Fire Protection District were called out to the Lake of the Ozarks for reports of a dog floundering in the lake.

When responders arrived, they discovered a six year old female boxer mix tangled in a trot line, with a hook imbedded in her left foreleg.  The line was also tangled up on a dock.

The dog, named Riley Jo, was able to stand on a submerged bluff to keep from drowning.  Responders cut the line, and carried the pooch to higher ground.  After a night spent at the vet, Riley Jo was released to her owners........

Alton Gearing Up For Fall Colors And Tourism........

While summer is winding down, and fall is creeping up, Alton is getting ready for a busy October.  Brett Stawar, president of the Alton Regional Convention and Visitor's Bureau said that the city is in fall festival mode.

There are a variety of events coming up, but the biggest question is how the leaves will be turning.  Stawar says that with the excessive rain this year, they are not sure what to expect.

Stawar states that they will be keeping their fingers crossed, hoping that the wet weather brings out more vibrancy in the colors.  Regardless of what the colors do, October is Alton's second busiest month for tourism.........

Fall Color Updates

St. Louis Region

Beginning to turn

Significant fall color has yet to begin in the St. Louis Region, but some flowering dogwood, white ash, Virginia creeper, red maple, and other early-turning species are showing hints of color. Expect fall color to become more noticeable over the next week with the cooler temperatures, especially with our crisp fall nights. Enjoy the rich maroons and purples of white ash in the region this year, as many will soon be dead due to emerald ash borer.

Several Locks May Close Due To High Water.........

On Monday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that high water levels along the Mississippi River will likely require the closing of three locks this week.

Allen Marshall, spokesman for the Corps' Rock Island District said that river level forecasts from the National Weather Service  may prompt the closure of Lock No.17 at New Boston, Illinois, Lock No.18 near Gladstone, Illinois, and Lock No.20 near Canton, Missouri.

Heavy rainfall in northern Iowa, southern Minnesota, and western Wisconsin has inundated farmland in the region, and raised concerns about crop damage.  The lock closures may last two to three days.........

Cedar Rapids Preparing For Flooding.........

On Monday, Cedar Rapids spokeswoman Gail Loskill said that approximately half of the homes and businesses in the Cedar Rapids area that are expected to see flooding have been evacuated.

Loskill added that about half of the city's 3,400 residential and 550 commercial properties have been evacuated, but Loskill said they are not sure how many people remain.

The National Weather Service had predicted that the Cedar River would crest on Tuesday at 23 feet, which is seven feet above major flood stage, but below the record level set in 2008........

Corps Will Continue Supporting Great Rivers Museum........

On Monday, members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District and the Meeting of the Rivers Foundation signed an agreement that would extend the collaboration supplementing the National Great Rivers Museum, the Melvin Price Locks and Dam, as well as the surrounding areas for another 10 years.

A ceremony held Monday at the National Great Rivers Museum commemorated the signing of the agreement.  Rivers Foundation Chainman and President of the Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau, Brett Stawar, and Colonel Anthony P. Mitchell, commander of the Corps' St. Louis District signed the cooperative agreement.

According to Colonel Mitchell, this type of initiative was conceived to tell the Corps' story.  He added that the assistance of the Rivers Foundation is invaluable, as it helps convey to the public all of the things that the Corps does.  Funding from the foundation is put toward a variety of educational programs and other services........

A Look Back At Bloody Island........

Bloody Island humbly began as a sandbar formed by the ever-changing current of the Mississippi River, eventually growing to a mile in length.  Separated from both Missouri and Illinois' riverbanks, the island was of uncertain legal jurisdiction, making it a convenient place to hold duels of honor.

Bloody Island almost kept St. Louis from becoming a river town.  By the 1820s, the channel between the island and Illinois was widening, and at St. Louis, the river was becoming shallower.  The concern was that the river would shift east, leaving the St. Louis steamboat landing high and dry.

In 1838, Army engineer Captain Robert E. Lee oversaw the construction of a rock and timber barrier between the Illinois riverbank, and the head of Bloody Island.  The barrier forced the river's current west, deepening the channel in front of St. Louis.  Eventually, the island fused with Illinois, becoming home to railyards and industries in and around East St. Louis........

News Release From BoatUS

Does Your Business Cater to Boaters? Grow it with Help from BoatUS
Partner Network Program Offers $250 for Local Advertising

ALEXANDRIA, VA, September 27, 2016 – As the summer boating season draws to a close, the BoatUS Partner Network Program reported more than 800 marinas and 300 other retail boating-related businesses participating this year. The program aims to drive business to program participants who offer a discount to the half-million members of the national boating association. In exchange, BoatUS offers up to $250 a year simply for including a BoatUS Member Discounts logo in local advertising and offers additional marketing support online, in boating publication advertising and point-of-sale promotional materials.

The most common marina discounts are on fuel, repairs, and transient slips. Tackle shops, ship’s stores, sail lofts and other businesses that cater to boaters have the flexibility to select discounts that best fit their customers’ needs.

BoatUS’ local boating business partners gain an individual listing on the BoatUS Member Service Locator, a custom webpage for their business, promotion in BoatUS Magazine and other boating and fishing publications, and a listing on the BoatUS App to help BoatUS members choose your business over your competition. Complimentary marketing supplies provided by BoatUS include promotional materials, signs, decals and flags.

“Our BoatUS members are very loyal, and our program gives BoatUS Partners a way to tap that allegiance,” said BoatUS Membership Programs Manager David Mann. Additionally, BoatUS Partners are eligible to receive compensation for selling $24 BoatUS annual memberships to their customers.

Businesses interested in participating in the BoatUS Partner Network Program can visit BoatUS.com/partner or email Partner@BoatUS.com.

Pictures of the Day ....... were sent to us by Jessica Mckay who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis

RiverBill:

Hello! I hope all is well with you! Bobby and I just got back from a trip to Costa Rica. While there, we went out on a boat ride and it was a great experience!

Getting onto the boat was a challenge in itself! The boat backed up to the beach and we had to time the waves just right to be able to hop on.

Once we were on the boat, Captain Walter took us for a ride around the Gulf of Papaygo , where the scenery is beautiful. We stopped at a "honeymoon island" for a swim, saw and heard 3 hump back whales, and laughed at a group of 6 dolphins that were "playing" with the boat. I forgot to bring a sticker on the boat, but luckily Bobby was wearing a Blessing of the Fleet shirt with your logo on the back!

Let's make the most of these last few weekends on the river!

Jessica Mckay,

Yacht Club of St. Louis

Everyone knows that there is no stopping the Mississippi River, so some farmers in Adams County, Illinois are teaming up to get their crops harvested before the Mississippi River inundates their fields.

According to farmer Craig Cramm, there were fewer than 24 hours to harvest the crop before the Mississippi River would start taking over his fields.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently released a photo of the first step in the process of revetment operations, or riverbank stabilization.

The Bank Grading Unit shapes the bank to the design grade and elevation to accept the articulated concrete mattress and upper bank paving........

Fall Colors....

Significant fall color has yet to begin in the St. Louis Region. While you may find an odd tree, shrub, or vine or two with a few hints of color, it’s still a bit early for the area overall. Specimens showing significant color change this early in the season may be an indicator of stress from insects or disease. Warmer weather may delay or dull the early color change as we need some cool nights to give us more brilliant color.

Another boater heard the distress call, and was able to rescue the family from the river, and transport them safely to the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area's boat ramp.  EMTs checked out the family, who was shaken up, but otherwise uninjured........

The USS Inangural

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

The St. Louis Riverfront And The Inaugural........

During the heyday of commerce along the Mississippi River, the St. Louis riverfront was a bustling mishmash of steamboats, freight wagons, crates, and barrels.

Over time, the steamboats gave way to excursion vessels, floating restaurants, floating theaters, floating casinos, and floating museums.  One of the museums was a World War II minesweeper, the USS Inaugural.

The Inaugural opened in 1968, and eventually became a side attraction to the floating Burger King restaurant.  During the flood of 1993, both vessels broke free of their moorings, and struck the Poplar Street Bridge.  The Inaugural was captured and lashed to a barge downstream of the MacArthur Bridge.  On September 23, 1993, she suddenly rolled to port, and sank.  She is now visible when the Mississippi River gets low........

Duke Energy Fines For Coal Ash Spill........

On Friday, North Carolina's environmental agency announced that Duke Energy Corp. has agreed to pay a $6 million fine for a massive coal ash spill that inundated the Dan River in 2014.

The Department of Environmental Quality said that Duke Energy was assessed the fine because of violations of federal water protection laws during the nation's third worst coal ash spill.

The spill sent over 30,000 tons of coal ash down the Dan River after a pipe burst at Duke Energy's Eden plant.  Coal ash cntains toxic chemicals including arsenic, chromium, and lead........

EPA Says Algal Bloom Discolored Rock River........

Residents of Moline, Illinois have been wondering what caused thick layers of murky matter to line the banks of the Rock River earlier in the month.

Field staff from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency had collected and tested samples of the material, and determined that it was the product of a non-toxic algal bloom.

According to EPA spokeswoman Kim Biggs, the agency has not determined the cause of the algal blooms, but they did note that they are occurring more often........

In April, Andrea and Jeremiah See learned that their son, due in September, has a condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). HLHS is a rare congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped. This little boy will be facing three open-heart surgeries within the first two years of his life. He will be in Cardiac ICU for the first 6-8 weeks and then, once home, will need numberous visits to the cardiologist, as well as physical and occupational therapy.

This benefit will help raise funds to offset medical and living expenses for the family. We are hoping you can join us to celebrate the family with your generosity and support.

I have been using it for quite a while and decided to format it better and share with everyone.  It's an easy way, at a glance,  to see what the river is doing up stream.

Open Houses Will Address Flooding Issues........

Officials from Madison County, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Heartlands Conservancy will be hosting a pair of open house events where the development of the American Bottom Watershed Plan will be discussed.

Alan Dunstan, County Chairman says that the events are intended to open a dialog with those affected by flooding within the watershed, which includes Granite City, Pontoon Beach, Mitchell, Venice, and Madison.

Dunstan said that it is imperative to get input directly from those affected by flooding and water quality issues within the watershed area, and to gain the help of the public as goals for flood and pollution reduction are established.........

Story Of Riverlands To Be Told Next Month........

Wildlife biologist and systems ecologist Patrick McGinnis will be telling the tale of how the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary came to be.

The event will be held at the Jacoby Arts Center on Friday, October 7, 2016, at 7 pm.  McGinnis will be discussing what he sees as challenges and opportunities for ensuring future water security.

During the mid 1980s, McGinnis started an effort with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to establish a natural resource presence along the Mississippi River, which eventually became recognized as a water resource stewardship innovator and leader........

News Release From BoatUS

Free BoatUS Winterizing Guide

ALEXANDRIA, Va., September 21, 2016 -- Water that is mistakenly left in a boat’s engine block to freeze over the winter is sure to become an expensive repair bill come springtime. As the ice expands, it can crack the block and ruin the motor, damage fiberglass, split hoses, or destroy a boat’s refrigeration system. To prevent a mishap while putting the boat away this fall, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), a boating advocacy, services and safety group offers the free 15-page “Boater's Guide to Winterizing.”

The online brochure addresses the reasons for more than 95 percent of the freeze claims handled by the BoatUS Marine Insurance Program. Included are sections on boat storage, engines and outdrives dos and don’ts, winterization contracts, green winterizing, as well as preparing boat plumbing. A winterization checklist is also included.

The guide is available at www.BoatUS.com/winterizingguide.

River is Healthier, More Work Needs To Be Done........

Recently, the National Park Service and Friends of the Mississippi River released the latest edition of the State of the River Report, which reveals that pollution control efforts have restored wildlife habitat in several areas.

Mississippi River Cruising

New Cruise Line Delaying Launch........

The latest cruise line to offer sailings along the Mississippi River, and other American waterways, French America Line, has delayed their launch by a few weeks.

French American Line's sole ship, Louisiane was supposed to make her maiden voyage, setting sail on October 1.  This depart date has been postponed on account of heavy rains that hit Louisiana earlier in the summer.

The Louisiane's initial three cruises are going to be chartered, so the first cruise that will carry regular passengers will shove off on November 9, for a round trip from Nashville.........

Town Meeting Held About Levee Requirements........

On Wednesday, residents of Prairie du Rocher met with representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to discuss the future of the town's levee.

At one time, the levee protecting Prairie du Rocher from the Mississippi River was accredited, however, following Hurricane Katrina, federal standards have changed.  The village must have the levee recertified, but that comes at a cost.

Levee district commissioner Steve Gonzalez says that while some funds have been raised, the next hurdle will be paying for the work necessary for an engineering study........
