Posted some pictures from the Past Commodores Party on the Con Trios Yacht Club website www.contriosyachtclub.com .  More to come.  Great day, great friends, great food!  Immediate Past Commodore Alan and Julie put together an excellent day for us at Port Charles Harbor (first time ever for Con Trios to hold an event there).  The setting could not have been better amongst the trees on the river bank.  Double Down played tunes all day while Past Commodores Mike Tremmel and Bill Mixon along with Linda put together a feast of a buffet.  The Past Commodores present included Mike Ramirez 2000, Carl Tiemann 2005, Sonny Robbins 1991, Jim Svoboda 2006, Fred Cross 1985, Bill Tullock 2013, Tom Anderson 2001, Tim Tighe 2007, Darryll Weil 2010, Alan Deustschmann 2012, Mike Tremmel 1999, Bill Mixon 1996, Gary Meinershagen 2008, Scott Hickey 2011 and Web Morrow 1995.

Next event is the Membership Party Saturday, October 12th at Eagles Landing.  Go to the Con Trios website for more information.  Click here for flyer.

New Fireboat Named For Stan The Man........

Soon, the St. Louis Fire Department will be taking delivery of a new firefighting vessel.  She is officially known as St. Louis Fire Department Marine Unit Number Six, but it will be called the "Stan Musial". The Stan Musial is capable of pumping 7,000 gallons of water per minute.  The reason for the Musial moniker is that the 44 foot fireboat will be known as the "big hitter" for the Port of St. Louis, which is now the third largest inland river port by tonnage........

    Gar Getting Reintroduced In Illinois........

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced plans to reintroduce the alligator gar into Illinois waterways.  The predator had inhabited the Mississippi River for about three million years, but the last known catch was in Cairo, Illinois in 1966.  In 1994, Illinois officials declared that the alligator gar no longer swam in Illinois waters.  Earlier in the month, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources introduced 650 alligator gar into the Little Sangamon River and Crane Lake........

Hi everyone,

After 60 days of paddling I've paddled down to St. Louis! Half the distance of the river. I've had to deal with motivational problems as I realized how long the Mississippi really is.
Luckily the amazing river people came to my rescue and showed me the reason why I love to travel. You can watch the third episode right here

I've covered a total distance of 1950 kilometers or 1190 miles.
From here the current will triple in speed and the barges will become even bigger. I'll also be facing big commercial ships and also the alligator that live in the lower parts of the Mississippi
If you want to get updates more frequently you can also follow me on Facebook.

New Boat Makes Shortwork Of Plotting River Bed........

Way before depth finders were invented, the only way to determine the depth of a river was to toss out a rope with a weight tied it.  This year, the St. Paul division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers acquired a Launch 22, equipped with 14.9 foot booms with several transducers and a GPS system to accurately map the bottom of the river.  The new technology allows crews to survey the river much faster than in the past........

Dean Jacobs was starting a trip down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, when he paddled his small canoe into the lock chamber of Lock and Dam No.1 at Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Jacobs got a crash course in how a lock operates.  U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lockmaster Mike DeRusha explained that the river is similar to a motorcycle, in that if you don't respect it, it will do you in.  DeRusha stated that the lock works like putting a boat into an empty bathtub, and then filling the tub with water........

Familiar Boot Key Harbor In Marathon On Vaca Key

Our first night back in Marathon was very calm and peaceful. The harbor is protected from most any wind as it is, but on Monday evening it was especially calm, but it was also hot. We'll be happy to get to Key West and turn on our air conditioning.
In The Bahamas I had made a repair to the seat in our dinghy. The thin fiberglass forward seat had begun to crack, so I made a truss to run along the bottom of the seat to give it some support, but the seat itself was beginning to de-laminate, so the damage continued. The material I needed couldn't be found in Miami, at least in places we could walk to, so early on Tuesday morning, we took a walk to K-Mart and Home Depot in Marathon to pick up some things on our list.
I bought some plastic trim board at Home Depot, an eight foot long piece, eight inches wide. I also found out that I could have bought twice the amount of Starboard that I had purchased at Crook and Crook in Miami, for about half the money. If you need Starboard, Home Depot is the place to get it.
We used our two wheeled cart from West Marine and trucked our purchases back to the dinghy, and then motored out to Swing Set. The long walk, plus the heat, had gotten to us, so we took a breather in the salon with the fans on high, until I felt rested up enough to make the repair to the dinghy seat.
While I was just getting started, a neighbor from a sailboat rowed over in his dinghy to say hello. The fella was very interesting. He was 72, on his fourth wife, and had refurbished a 40 plus year old boat that he and his new bride was going to take to The Bahamas in November. We were trading some information about the Abacos when he suddenly asked me what time it was. When I told him, he said he was late picking up his wife from the library and he had to go. He then rowed his dinghy away, saying we'd be talking later.

I just saw the story Capt Ken sent you about the lil duck on his boat. Guess what? She spent Tues evening on our boat "The Mint To Be", while we were being hit with all the bad weather at our dock, in Woodland Harbor. She is so gentle, I suspect she might have been someones pet. We were able to hand feed her and pet her. You gotta love mother nature.

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2011 ...... were sent to us by Ken Longar who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis

Bill,

I was fishing down just out side of Woodland Harbor when this little girl show up. I could not believe how brave she was she let me pick her up and take photos of her I think she was looking for a hand out but I could not help much there. I have been boating for 60 years and have had a number of things in the boat with me, most not welcome, but this was a first. We need to stock some corn just for her. I will say the fishing was very good. But I think the rain is coming in shots is up the Bolder from Yacht Club.
