More Information Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois Vandals Damaged Piasa Park Monument, Officials Consider Repair Options........
Vandals recently knocked over and broke the marble granite arrowhead at Piasa Park in Alton that tells the legend of the mythical Piasa Bird that Native Americans believed resided in the region.
Michael Haynes, director of Parks and Recreation in Alton says that the monument is split in half where the wording is and some of the pieces came out. He added that the monument could be glued back together, but it won't look right.
Haynes says that they will be getting a quote of what it will take to replace the monument, however, they will also be considering other options such as flat signage instead of a monument. He adds that the park will be renovated in the next year or so and will be adding more security and cameras........

Wentzville Boat Manufacturer MTI Powerboats Celebrating 25th Anniversary........
Marine Technology Inc., builder of high-performance catamarans and center console V-bottom boats is celebrating their 25th birthday in 2023, and to kick off this special year, the Wentzville, Missouri-based company had what founder Randy Scism called "the best Miami Boat Show Ever".
MTI's journey began when Scism was offered the chance to develop and manage an offshore powerboat racing team in Dubai. The Victory Team became a success, and Scism eventually returned home to found MTI, applying what he had learned in Dubai to building high performance powerboats.
Last year, MTI delivered 48 go-fast catamarans and center consoles and Scism says that they should be producing 60 vessels this year. Scism says that even after 25 years, they're running wide open.........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Riverview Drive Repair Project Poised To Begin Next Phase........
During Wednesday evening's meeting of the Alton City Council. Justin Kleinschmidt of Sheppard, Morgan & Schwaab, Inc. advised the aldermen that the Riverview Drive repair project has nearly reached the end of the first phase.
The bluff below the roadway collapsed in a mudslide in 2019, taking a portion of Riverside drive and an old retaining wall with it. The bluff stabilization project was started in November 2022 with work by GeoStabalization International of Commerce City, Colorado.
Workers began the project with the installation of 35 to 50 foot long soil nails, followed by the installation of mesh sprayed with layers of shotcrete concrete to secure everything in place. The new retaining wall has been reconstructed and the crew is set to begin installing an adjacent wall, a sidewalk and the roadway........

The construction of a new Interstate 270 Chain of Rocks Bridge spanning the Mississippi River between St. Louis, Missouri and Granite City, Illinois represents a significant achievement for infrastructure in the region.
The project is also a testament to the strength of the ongoing collaboration that is working to add capacity and redundancy to the St. Louis Metro region's world-class freight network.
Close to $900 million in funding has been secured by the Missouri Department of Transportation and the Illinois Department of Transportation for the construction project that will replace the Chain of Rocks I-270 Bridge and make much needed improvements to sections of I-270........

Good News ! Upper Mississippi River Lake Pepin Ice Lower Than Average.........
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the winter ice thickness along the Mississippi River's Lake Pepin is below average over the period since 2012. As of February 28th, the total ice thickness at Mile Marker 770 was about 19 inches.
The thickest total ice measured at 22 inches was located at Mile Marker 773. No ice was reported between the 781 and 786 Mile Markers. At this time in 2018, the total ice thickness at Mile Marker 773 was 28 inches, and the thinnest was 14 inches in 2020.
The ice typically gets thicker after the first mid-February measurements prior to decreasing. In 2017, however, the ice got thinner, going from 51 to 14 inches thick after the initial measurements........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois Piasa Park's Arrow-Shaped Monument Damaged Overnight........
Wednesday morning, Michael Haynes, the Director of the Alton Park and Recreation Department announced that the arrowhead-shaped monument in Piasa Park along the Great River Road near Alton was damaged overnight. The park is home to the famed Piasa Bird painting.
Haynes says that the monument was undamaged as of late Tuesday afternoon, however, at some point someone was able to get enough leverage to knock the statue over, breaking it into half. He added that this had occurred two or three times over the pas several months.
Haynes adds that the monument is quite heavy and would not have been easy to topple. He speculates that the incident may have involved multiple people and possibly some type of vehicle........

Mississippi River at St. Louis, Missouri Gateway Arch National Park Visits Skyrocket 41 Percent........
According to figures released by the National Park Service this week, the number of people who visited the Gateway Arch National Park increased by 41 percent from 2021 to 2022.
The National Park Service reports that 1.62 million people visited the Gateway Arch National Park during 2022, compared to approximately 1.15 million during 2021.
In July 2018, the park reopened following a $380 million overhaul still has a way to go to return to pre-pandemic levels. In 2019, the park welcomed 2.1 million visitors. During the late 1990s, the park regularly saw around 3.5 million visitors........

Mississippi River At Chester, Illinois MoDOT Announced Firm That Will Replace The Chester Bridge........
The Missouri Department of Transportation recently announced that they have selected the team that will head up the replacement of the Chester Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River between Perryville, Missouri and Chester, Illinois.
On March 8, 2023, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission announced that they have chosen the Ames Team to replace the bridge. Brian Okenfuss, MoDOT Project Director says that choosing a team for the project was quite difficult. Okenfuss said that reviewing proposals from prospective design-build firms was a rigorous process, as all have had great history with previous projects.
The new Chester Bridge will be constructed upstream from the existing structure and will be twice as wide as the old span. The project is expected to be completed by December 1, 2026.........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Alton Committee Approved Lease Agreement With Viking Cruise Lines........
The Alton City Council Committee of the Whole recently gave preliminary approval to a resolution that will enter the city into a lease agreement with Viking USA, which will give the company permission to dock along the Alton riverfront for at least the next five years.
The lease agreement include three options to extend the lease term for a period of five years each. The rent will be $1 per passenger onboard, with a 10 cent increase every five years. After the first year, basic rent will be $2,000 per year........

National Great Rivers Research & Education Center UN World Water Film Festival To Show NGRREC Documentaries........
This month, two documentaries produced for and in conjunction with the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center will be screened at the inaugural World Water Film Festival in New York City. The WWFF is part of the United Nations Water Week, which runs March 22 - 23. It also coincides with World Water Day, March 22.
The festival will kick off with Mussel Grubbing: A Citizen Science Treasure Hunt which focuses on the citizen science work of the Illinois RiverWatch program. Citizen scientist and volunteer, Nina Carmichael, is the star of the film and will be a keynote speaker during the event. This film follows citizen scientists along the Sangamon RIver as they survey mussel s to determine water quality within the watershed.
The second film, Kids on the River, which is a Swarovski Waterschool film, will be featured among 20 other short and feature films in the showcase. The film follows a group of East St. Louis high school students who spent a week along the Mississippi River at the NGRREC Field Station as they performed hands-on, field-based water science work........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Riverfront Encampment To Be Disbanded Friday........
The City of St. Louis is offering housing, transportation and other resources to people living in a tent community along the Mississippi River near Laclede's Landing..
As of Tuesday, a spokesperson for the city said that 14 individuals had accepted the assistance being offered. Notices were posted last week stating that the camp would be disbanded on March 10th.
A city spokesperson stated that the St. Louis Department of Human Services is committed to guaranteeing all families in the city that are homeless, or whose homes are unstable, have options for permanent and supportive housing........

Boat Show News Marine Dealers: St. Charles Boat Show Among Best Attended In 10 Years........
The recent Lake of the Ozarks Marine Dealers Association St. Charles Boat Show, which ran from February 23 - 26, saw a total of 6,164 people pass through the turnstiles, making it the second-best show in the 10 years that it has been held in St. Charles.
This year's turnout likely was assisted by the lack of any other boat shows in the St. Louis region this year. The St. Louis Boat & Sport Show had been cancelled in 2021 and has not returned.
The turnout at the St. Charles Boat Show parallels the strong turnout from the LOMDA's Overland Park Boat Show, which had 8,436 attendees. LOMDA will be presenting one more show this season, the Spring In-Water Boat Show, scheduled for April 21 - 23 at Dog Days Bar & Grill on the Lake of the Ozarks........

More Information Mississippi River At Winfield, Missouri Officials Say No Leaks From Barges That Broke Free........
Chief Arron Lee of the Winfield Foley Fire Protection District says that two barges that were carrying 5,000 gallons of anhydrous ammonia broke free from their tow on Friday just upstream from the Winfield Dam.
Anhydrous ammonia is stored as a liquid under pressure, however, when it is released into the environment, it becomes a toxic gas. Lee notes that a lot of the time, it is used for agriculture, fertilizer.
Lee says that there was a scare that there could have been a release of gas during the incident that would have caused an inhalation hazard for residents in the area. He added that the gas immediately takes the oxygen out of your lungs.
There was a mandatory evacuation of nearby residents, but thankfully, there was no leak........

More Information Meramec River Near Sullivan, Missouri Text 911, Dispatchers Help Save Stranded Boater........
Sunday morning, a 23 year old boater was alone on the Meramec River in Crawford County when he needed help. Brad England, director of the Crawford County 911 Emergency Services says that the Meramec River was flooded and the boater capsized. Investigators say that the man floated downriver a bit holding onto some logs.
He attempted to call 911, but the call would not go through. England says that he texted help and also tested Sappington Bridge. Dispatchers Jonathan Sunderland and Kasey Conn were on the ball and were able to focus on the man's urgent test. Sunderland answered the test and Conn dispatched responders .
The dispatchers responded quickly and sent two rescue boats to the Sappington Bridge region south of Sullivan, Missouri. Responders from the Sullivan and Bourbon Fire Departments sprinted to the river and were able to pull the boater from the Meramec River just in time. Paramedics treated the man on scene and he had returned to work on Monday........

Mississippi River Near Granite City, Illinois Continued Collaboration Between Missouri & Illinois Benefits I-270 Bridge Project........
The construction of a new Interstate 270 Chain of Rocks Bridge spanning the Mississippi RIver between Missouri and Illinois marks another important milestone for infrastructure in the Metro St. Louis region.
During the three year project planning phase, this teamwork resulted in securing over $600 million in funding by both Missouri and Illinois Departments of Transportation for the bridge replacement project, in addition to improvements to the highway on either side of the span.
The new Interstate 270 Chain of Rocks Bridge is part of the regional plan to improve a 30 mile section of Interstate 270 between James S. McDonnell Boulevard in Missouri and Illinois Route 157........

Chicago River At Chicago, Illinois Largest Vessel To Travel The Mississippi & Illinois Rivers Wound Through Downtown Chicago........
While Trolling The Internet.... We reeled in some interesting photos from March 5, 1953, showing the biggest vessel to travel the Mississippi River and Illinois Waterway (at the time) snake it's way through downtown Chicago enroute to Lake Michigan.
According to the Chicago tribune's account of events, the vessel Marine Angel was nearly 634 feet in length and 70 feet wide. The vessel only had seven inches of clearance on each side at Van Buren Street.
The final obstacle for the Marine Angel overcome was to pass through the lock separating Lake Michigan from the Chicago River. The vessel was longer than the lock chamber, so the vessel was towed into the lock until it's bow nearly touched the lakeside gate.
Large hawsers were run from the vessel's winches to mooring posts and once the lakeside gate was opened, the vessel was winched forward against the onrushing water until the riverside gate could be closed....

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois Rough Day For Tournament Anglers........
During Saturday's Twisted Cat Outdoors Fishing Series tournament in Alton, Illinois, the fish that got away ruled the day. Competitors described the fishing conditions of the season opener as "very tough".
High water and fast currents combined with sediment from Friday's heavy rainfall ended up meaning that the total weight of the catch was down compared to last year's tournament.
68 teams participated in the tournament, which was a record for the second year of the event. The team of John Berglund, Jason Hamilton and Eddie Henney of Adele, Iowa took first place, whose total catch of 70.7 pounds earned them $9,066........

llinois Waterways Stream Health Monitors Sought For The Riverbend........
This month, the Illinois RiverWatch Network will be offering stream health monitor training workshops across the state, including in Madison County. One workshop will be held on March 18th in Godfrey and the second will be in Alton on March 24th.
There will be a $50 fee that covers a RiverWatch manual and materials. No experience is needed to attend a workshop........

Meramec River Near Sullivan, Missouri Firefighters Rescued Man After Boat Capsized.........
On Sunday morning, Sullivan firefighters were called out to the Meramec River at the Sappington Bridge for a report of a boat that had capsized. The firefighters used boats to rescue a man from the river.
According to a report form the Sullivan Independent News, the 23 year old man suffered moderate injuries in the incident and was later spotted standing on brush debris on a bridge pillar.
The Sullivan Firefighters Community Outreach reported that the man was in the water when responders arrived on scene. The man was successfully rescued by firefighters and Missouri Baptist EMS provided treatment afterwards........

Mississippi River Cruising American Cruise Lines Opening Greatest Season Yet.........
According to a press release, American Cruise Lines is poised to open their biggest season ever along the Mississippi River in March 2023. ACL is introducing their newest riverboat, the American Serenade, a new eight day Tennessee Rivers itinerary between Nashville and Chattanooga and several new shore excursions and adventures.
Between March and December 2023, American Cruise Lines will be operating five riverboats and more than 11 itineraries along the Mississippi River between St. Paul, Minnesota and New Orleans, Louisiana.
The American Serenade will debut on April 20th, sailing on an eight day christening cruise from New Orleans to Memphis, Tennessee. The vessel will be joined by the American Melody, American Symphony, American Heritage and American Splendor........

Added Sunday U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers Following Record Low Water, Corps' Dredges Had Record Season........
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredging crews in the Memphis, Vicksburg and St. Louis districts have completed their work on the heels of an extended dredging season made longer by extremely low water conditions in the fall and into the winter.
In the Corps' St. Louis Engineers District, the Dredge Potter wrapped up it's season on February 1dt after having moved 9 million cubic yards of material at 70 locations along the 300 miles of the St. Louis District.
In total, seven dredging units, dustpan, cutterhead and mechanical worked together throughout the St. Louis District. Two other dredges supported the Mississippi Valley Division's efforts along the Mississippi River........

Added Sunday Lower Mississippi River Valley Meeting Scheduled To Discuss lower Mississippi Environmental Study........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Memphis District and the Lower Mississippi River Conservation Committee are calling for comments on a proposed three year study of sections of the Lower Mississippi River between Mile Marker 775 and Mile Marker 736.
A hybrid in-person and virtual meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 6th at the Ducks Unlimited Headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee. The meeting will run from 6 pm to 8 pm and will discuss the Draft Integrated Feasibility Report and Draft Environmental Assessment of the Hatchie-Loosahatchie Mississippi River Ecosystem Restoration Study.
The Memphis District and LMRCC will be hosting an open house from 6 - 6:45 pm and concluding the evening will be a presentation and comment period from 6:45 to 8 pm........

Added Sunday River Destinations Mississippi River At Dubuque, Iowa Seahorses, An Octopus and More Have Arrived At The River Museum........
Twelve new exhibits and more than forty new animal species have been brought to the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium for their new Rivers to Sea exhibit.
The new exhibit includes a tide pool touch tank where visitors can touch sea stars and sea anemones. Other new undersea animals include seahorses, an octopus, jellyfish and bucktooth pufferfish.
The museum has also partnered up with Dubuque's growing Marshallese community to add a historic Marshallese outrigger canoe that was hand-built by craftsmen in Dubuque........

Added Sunday Lake Of The Ozarks Polar Plunge Raised Record $270,000 For Special Olympics........
Last weekend's Polar Plunge at the Lake of the Ozarks brought out over 200 plungers to jump into the frigid water to raise funds for Special Olympics Missouri.
This year, the Plunge raised $270,585 for Special Olympics (and more, as donations are still coming in), which is an increase of close to $100,000 over last year.
Crystal Schuster, Special Olympics Missouri's senior director of community development says that this was a record breaking year for fundraising. She added that she is amazed at how the LOTO community comes out in support of this event each year........

Mississippi River Near Winfield, Missouri No Issues After Barges Loaded With Anhydrous Ammonia Broke Free........
On Friday evening, two barges loaded with a significant amount of anhydrous ammonia broke free from a tow north of Lock and Dam No.25 near Winfield, Missouri.
A mandatory evacuation was issued for all residents within one mile south of the Winfield Lock and Dam No.25. The evacuation order has since been cancelled.
The Winfield Foley Fire Protection District reported on their Facebook page that there is no further hazard, and confirmed that no chemical release occurred. They also report that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was able to safely move a barge to a safe location after it broke free and turned sideways........

Illinois Fishing News Catfish Tournament In Alton On Saturday........
If you drop by Alton today, you may notice an abundance of boats on the Mississippi River, and that is because a total of 75 boats and their respective teams have registered for the Twisted Cat Outdoors fishing tournament. The tournament will start at the Alton Marina at 7 am and run until 3 pm.
The Twisted Cat Outdoors series is one of the premier catfishing tournament trails in the nation, with tournaments held along the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio Rivers.
The Twisted Cat Outdoors Tournament is expected to bring in more than $300,000 in economic benefits to the southwestern Illinois region........

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri The Mississippi River Is Expected to Rise To Flood Stage This Week........
Around 5 months ago, The Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau, Missouri was so low that barges were being forced to load lightly in order to avoid running aground. Now, the Missouri River is expected to rise into flood stage next week.
The National Weather Service's forecasts indicated that the Mississippi River could rise to a crest of 34.5 feet in Cape Girardeau by Thursday, up about 15 feet over the current level.
Flood stage in Cape Girardeau is 32 feet. On Friday, March 3rd, a flood warning was issued for several counties in Southeastern Missouri. Approximately 2 to 4 inches of rain fell Friday morning........

Paddling News From Kihei, Hawaii Paddleboarders Fend Off 15 Foot Tiger Shark........
Paddleboarders Patrick Wardle and Megan Valentine were recently paddleboarding off the coast of South Maui when they encountered a 15 foot long tiger shark.
Wardle said that they were just floating along and enjoying the best of what Maui has to offer, and all of a sudden, they spotted a large shape headed towards them.. The pair were on an inflatable paddleboard about a mile offshore from Kihei.
Valentine said that she believed that it was a giant manta ray or baby whale. She added that as it got closer, it became obvious that it was a massive shark. They attempted to fend off the shark with a paddle to it's nose, but the shark lunged from the water and bit off about two feet of the paddle........

Throughout March and April, Illinois RiverWatch will be hosting training sessions across Illinois. These workshops are intended to teach community members how to monitor the health of their local streams.
RiverWatch is coordinated by the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center through Lewis and Clark Community College. Every spring, RiverWatch offers classes to train volunteers to collect and identify macroinvertebrates, as well as describe the condition of the stream itself.
After completing training and becoming certified, volunteers will be able to adopt a stream where they will monitor water quality and contribute to a state-wide dataset using RiverWatch survey methods........

Mississippi River At Thebes, Illinois The Tiny Village Of Thebes Has Some Links To Ancient Egypt........
The tiny village of Thebes, Illinois is nestled along the Mississippi River in an area known as "Little Egypt", as it is located upriver from Cairo, Illinois. In Egypt, Cairo and Thebes are also close to one another, along the Nile River.
The village was originally a riverboat port called Sparhawk Landing when it was founded in 1835. The village is also home to the historic Thebes Bridge, which has carried rail traffic across the Mississippi RIver since 1905.
Like it's namesake, Thebes, Illinois has a rich history, some good, some bad. It may have been the location where former slave Dredd Scott was once imprisoned. It is one of the main locations in the book Show Boat. The village once elected a female mayor and an all female City Council........

Mississippi River Management New Camera System Helps Researchers Track Mud Aggregates........
Associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, Kyle Strom, and his research team needed to measure the small particle aggregates in the Mississippi River, however, no such equipment was in existence.
In order to collect the information they needed, Strom and his crew constructed a special camera called the FlocARAZI, which provided the first time measurements of flocs, which are muddy, snowflake-shaped aggregates in the river.
The researchers used the unique camera system to try to understand where the mud will be deposited in and around the Mississippi River and it's delta, and how that could affect land gain or loss in the region........

Lower Mississippi River $50 Million Needed For River Restoration Project........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has proposed a new restoration project for the Lower Mississippi River, beginning with a 39 mile section near Memphis, Tennessee. The project could help save threatened and endangered aquatic animals. The Corps still needs to acquire the $50 million in funding.
In an effort to tame the Mississippi River's meandering way, the Corps built flood control and navigation projects which largely separated the Mississippi River from it's historic floodplain.
Over 20 years ago, the seeds for this project were sewn with the passage of the Water Resources Development Act of 2000 and the studies it has funded. The Memphis project would benefit up to 6,000 acres with the optimization of connections between the river and the floodplain, increased vegetative habitats and public access for more recreation........

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois Grafton Ferry Study To Commence........
The Grafton Ferry is one step closer to operating on a year-round schedule. Last fall, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced that $210,000 had been included in the 2023 Statewide Planning & Research Program to conduct a study of the ferry systems in the Grafton/Calhoun area.
Officials have awarded a contract for the study. Grafton Mayor Mike Morrow says that they will be publishing a report on what the consultants will be studying.
The Grafton Ferry reduces the amount of time the trip from Grafton to the St. Louis and St. Charles area by 20 to 30 minutes. They ferry is currently operating on a weekend schedule........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Twisted Cat Outdoors Fishing Season Opening Saturday........
On Saturday, March 4th, from 7 am to 4 pm, the Alton Amphitheater will be hosting the opening of the Twisted Cat Outdoors Fishing Season with the SeaArk Catfishing Tournament.
There are more than 60 teams expected to compete in the epic catfishing tournament. The weigh-in will be held at Riverfront Park near the Alton Amphitheater.
The SeaArk Catfishing Tournament will be hosting anglers from across the nation fighting to catch the elusive giant blue catfish and see how they compare during the official weigh-in........

Mark Twain Lake Indian Creek West Boat Ramp Closed........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake recently announced that the Indian Creek West Boat Ramp would be temporarily closed for renovations. The project will involve the installation of a new comfort station.
Contractor crews will demolish the previous comfort station and will then install utilities for the new restroom facilities that will be located in the Indian Creek West Boat Ramp perking lot.
This project will allow for the comfort station to be out of the flood plain. The Indian Creek West Boat Ramp will remain closed through March 14th........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer Volvo Group's Net Sales Up Close To 30 Percent........
Volvo Group, parent company of boat propulsion manufacturer, Volvo Penta has reported that despite supply chain issues and economic headwinds, they have posted net sales of $45.2 billion during fiscal 2022, nearly a 30 percent increase over fiscal 2021.
Volvo Group's adjusted operating income increased to $4.8 billion from fiscal 2021's $3.9 billion. Volvo Group reported operating cash flow of $3.4 billion during fiscal 2022.
Volvo Penta's fiscal 2022 sales of both engines and services increased 25 percent to $1.7 billion. During fiscal 2022, the company delivered 17,924 engine units, an increase of 775 units compared to 2021. Adjusted operating margin was 14 percent........

The Mississippi And Ohio Rivers After Nearly Drying Up, Some Rivers Nearing Flood Stage........
A few short months ago, sandbars were present at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers near Cairo, Illinois, but bow, the river levels have risen to the action stage, meaning that the river level is near but not at flood stage.
Thomas Russell of Russell Marine Group says that between February and March, we may see below-normal precipitation in the central Midwest, which will cause low water concerns near St. Louis.
Russell adds that above normal precipitation in the Ohio RIver Valley will keep the Ohio RIver and the Lower Mississippi River well charged. The above normal precipitation in the Ohio RIver Valley will push the river levels higher in Baton Rouge and New Orleans........

Personals Karen Halley.....
Please read this entire post. I will try to explain and answer most questions. As most of you know, Karen Halley had a bout with lung cancer late in the summer and went through chemo and radiation to hopefully cure her from it. Through September and October 2022 she did just that. Unfortunately she will be on oxygen the rest of her life but she has dealt with that. She was due to have CT scans in late February 2023 to check the status of the shrunken lung mass. In January 2023 Karen felt some pains in her upper right stomach area and we had it checked out at the hospital. Scans showed a mass in her liver. Then more tests again. A series of blood tests, a liver biopsy, a P.E.T. scan, and a brain MRI. The MRI showed fine but the P.E.T. scan and liver biopsy showed that the lung cancer had metastasized somehow, even through the chemo and radiation for the lung cancer, and now shows the same cancer now in her liver. Squeamish non small cell cancer. It’s supposed to be slow moving but the mass showed to be 6cm. Two weeks later when we got the results of all the tests it had grown to 10cm. Karen has been through chemo twice, she had breast cancer 13 years ago and beat that, and now the lung cancer and basically beat that. She does not want to feel like hell and go through chemo again. The doctor told us the regimen this time for the liver cancer would be very aggressive and would make her sick. She would have to take steroids for 3 days after each chemo session. Chemo would also include immunotherapy, which is another type of chemo. That type has side effects that attack any organs that are compromised, while it also attacks cancer cells and kills them. This we’re told is stage 4 and has gone far, too far for surgery without first doing chemo and hopefully lessening the mass. Karen wants to feel as normal as possible and be able to see her family, talk with friends, be as happy as possible in what may be her last days with us. She is adamant that she will not do chemo again and believes it may only give another couple extra months anyway. She is tired of fighting it. Karen is very weak but making the best of things for now. Karen is happy to see anyone that wants to come by or call, but talking too much makes her tired. She does not want sympathy during these times, she wants to feel happy and just discuss good times. All her family and a few very close friends have been made aware. We want to let everyone else know what’s happening and this is a way to get it out there, though not really the best idea. Hopefully we won’t get anyone we don’t know that is trying to take advantage of a situation. Please let Karen have her way of dealing with this terrible thing, and keep her in your prayers and thoughts. If you want to call Karen or come by to visit and see her, please respect her wishes. Mississippi River Shipping Is The Mississippi River Shipping Crisis Over?
The shipping crisis along the Mississippi River may finally be winding down. Since July, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has bee dredging the Mississippi River 24/7 in an effort to ease commercial traffic backups.
Thanks to improved snowpack in the northern Mississippi River Basin and precipitation throughout the middle of the nation in late fall into the winter, the Mississippi River and it's tributaries may be back to normal by spring.
Mike Steenhoek, executive director of the Soy Transportation Coalition says that looking at the river gauges in St. Louis, Missouri and Memphis, Tennessee, the river levels are equal or at least comparable to this time last year........

Mississippi River Personalities Riverboat Captain Made History When He Took The Helm In 1992........
On Friday, March 3, 2023, the 2023 Riverboats at the Gateway Arch cruise season will begin and one of three captains at the helm will be Captain Kevin East, who will be starting his 31st season as a riverboat captain.
In February of 1992, Captain East made history when he became the first African-American in the state of Missouri to earn his license to navigate a vessel. Captain East's hat and jacket from his early years are now in the collection of the Missouri Historical Society.
Captain East says that while growing up in North St. Louis, his mother would take him down to the riverfront to see the boats and go aboard the Admiral. He became intrigued by the whole thing and began working down there when he turned 18. He became a riverboat captain when he was only 23 years old........

LOTO Shootout News No-Wake Times Changing For 2023 Shootout.........
The organizers for the Lake of the Ozarks' biggest annual event, the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout boat race, recently announced that they have made changes to the "No-Wake" rules for this year's competition.
Every August, thousands of boaters turn out to watch the Shootout, and as the event winds down, most boaters head home in the same direction. In order to protect the shoreline and boaters, the Missouri State Highway Patrol set up extended No-Wake zones for the latter half of the day.
All day, there is a No-Wake zone for the few miles surrounding the race course, but the Extended No-Wake Zone in the afternoon and evening hours runs from the 31.5 Mile Marker to the 21 Mile Marker. In years past, the Extended No-Wake zone began at 1 pm, this year, it is moved back to 3 pm........
