Mississippi River Water Level Outlook

     Storms Improve River Outlook........

Some relief is coming to the Mississippi River, thanks to increased releases from the Missouri River reservoirs, and recent snow and rain storms. Since Monday, the level of the Mississippi River at St. Louis has risen about a foot and a half, to approximately 12 feet. Prior predictions had the river dropping to around 9 feet by the end of December. These new predictions show the river won't drop until the middle of January........

A Few Days In "The Black Hole"

Marathon is called "The Black Hole" because so many boaters go there, never to leave again. We are determined to avoid being one of those, but I can see where it would be difficult to leave.
The harbor is sheltered and the water quality is not as good as on the "outside", but it's not bad. I could almost make water from it, but don't need to. Stores, both for grocery and hardware shopping, are within walking distance, albeit a long walk, but taxi service is cheap too. There are places to go in the dinghy as far as a beach or places to eat. There is a large laundry room, a good library, a place to recycle waste liquids like oil and diesel, if you are doing any maintenance.
We'll be here at least until the 28th of December when Holly has her follow-up visit to the vet to determine if our treatment for her ear infection has worked. The weather will determine whether or not we will venture forth in order to be in Key West for New Year's, which is our loose laid plan. Right now, a front is moving in and this afternoon the winds will pick up and by tomorrow there will be 5-6 foot seas out on the route to Key West. We don't intend to venture out in those kind of seas, on purpose anyway. We have made some inquiries as to some places to anchor in Key West, as well as a place to use a dinghy dock, and we feel confident that we can exist there.

Last Saturday we took the dinghy out and scouted out the beach over on Sombrero Key. We took two turns around Boot Key in the process and wound up over at Lazy Days at the Marathon Marina. We had a few beers at the bar and met a nice couple from Ohio, down here on vacation. The picture above was taken as we left, and it was very dark by the time we found ourselves back at the boat.
While we've been here we've done laundry twice, made three trips to Home Depot, and one trip to the Winn Dixie. The cart we bought earlier this year from West Marine came in handy when we hauled the groceries back to the dock.
The generator oil got changed, another attempt to fix our water leak was done, some barnacles have been scraped, and some waxing was done too. I changed the filters in two of the Racor fuel filters and used our new oil extractor to pull dirty fuel from the bottom of the bowls in the filter housings. Using the extractor to siphon fuel is not recommended by the manufacturer, but I saw no danger in it and found it to be a perfect way to extract the contaminants from the bottom of the filter bowls.
We went to a "presentation" on Tuesday night, over at the tiki hut at the marina, given by Chuck and Susan from "Trawler Beach House". A few other boaters were in attendance and we learned a few things and had some good conversations. We have a link to Chuck and Susan's blog on our home page.
We have started listening in on the "cruisers net" at 9 A.M. each morning when boaters in the area chime in and trade information regarding the harbor, trades they may have, or any other requests. It's a good way to network with the other boaters in the harbor.

Every day has included a dinghy ride, or a walking trip, keeping us busy. The sunsets with the sailboats in the foreground are just beautiful, as you can see in the above photo. We can understand the appeal of staying here in "the Black Hole", and becoming a part of this community. It's very interesting. I swear I saw Charles Manson getting water in his dinghy over at the marina, but I know better. There is a diverse group of boaters here, some on a shoestring, and others more flush. We might fall somewhere in the middle, but are in the minority here, being power boaters and all.
I'm not impressed with this post, but thought I'd get you all up to date. Perhaps something more interesting will happen to us over the weekend and we can relay a good story. But we don't want it to be too interesting.

    Update....Crews Excavating Pinnacles, Not Blasting........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are successfully excavating the rock pinnacles from the Mississippi River near Thebes, Illinois using excavators, so they are delaying the use of explosives. Contractors had been hired to remove the pinnacles with explosives. The blasting had been scheduled to begin on Tuesday. Corps spokesman Mike Peterson stated that using the excavators is safer, cleaner and quicker than using explosives........

Coast Guard, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers oversee rock removal operations

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — The Coast Guard and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conducted rock removal operations on the Mississippi River near Thebes, Ill., Tuesday.

Coast Guard incident command leadership and Col. Chris Hall, commander at St. Louis District U.S Army Corps of Engineers, toured the Coast Guard enhanced mobile incident command post and the rock removal site.

The primary function of the EMICP is to provide sheltered work space, voice and data connectivity as well as command and control capabilities on a mobile platform.

The Coast Guard and USACE are overseeing rock removal operations due to the low water situation on the Mississippi River.

"The U.S Army Corps of Engineers are working hand-in-hand with the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure the channel is cleared out to expedite barge traffic as safely and efficiently as possible," said Lt. Colin Fogarty, incident management division officer for Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River.

Missouri River Releases To Be Increased........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that they will gradually increase releases into the Missouri River, due to concerns about colder weather. The releases from the Gavins Point Dam in South Dakota will increase by 4,000 cubic feet per second to 18,000 cfs by Thursday. Corps spokesperson Jody Farhat stated that the increase is needed because ice will be forming on the river. It is not expected to increase the level of the Mississippi River downstream........

Picture of the Day

The

USS Inaugural

Pictures of the Day ....were sent to us by Capt'n Mark Dinzebach who hails out of Eagles Landing Marina...

Hi Bill,

Here's a couple of pictures I took today of the rusting hulk of the USS Inaugural, which sank during the flood of 1993. With the recent low water in the Mississippi River, the remains are almost fully exposed, just south of the McArthur bridge, at the foot of Rutger Street, and it has obviously become a target for graffitti artist.

The Minesweeper USS Inaugural (AM-242), a barge used as a site seeing helicopter landing pad, and a Burger King restaurant inside a steamboat replica known as the Spirit of the River, broke free of their moorings on August 1,1993. They were quickly rounded up by tow boats, and the Inaugural was moored south of its original location. On September 23, the Inaugural started listing toward its port side and sank shortly after.

It is often forgotten that the Inaugural was successfully raised and re-floated during the winter of 93/94. A dispute over salvage payment developed between the owners and the salvage company, which resulted in the Inaugural being allowed to sink again. It still lays in this location, and shows up now and then at the whim of the Mississippi River.

RiverBill says.... Thanks for the pictures Mark !

We dug up a few pictures of the ship when it was moored on the St. Louis Riverfront and one from WWII from the Wikipedia Commons Library

USS Inaugural (AM-242) was an Admirable-class fleet minesweeper. The Admirable class was the largest and one of the most successful classes of U.S. minesweepers ordered during World War II. Inaugural was launched on 1 October 1944, and was commissioned on 30 December, with Lieutenant John H. Pace USNR in command.  (Source: Wikipedia Commons)

Mississippi River Near Thebes, Illinois

    Crews Excavating Pinnacles, Not Blasting........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is postponing the use of explosives to blast the rock pinnacles from the Mississippi River near Thebes, Illinois. The Corps is having great success excavating the pinnacles using machinery. Corps spokesman Mike Peterson stated that blasting was slated to start on Tuesday, but excavation barges were able to remove enough rock that the use of explosives is on hold for now........

Mississippi River Shipping

    Farmers Feeling Low Water Pinch........

The number of barges in tow, and the capacity of those barges has decreased, which has reduced the tonnage shipped by nearly 50%. The costs of river shipping, the fuel, personnel and time has not changed however. Southwest Illinois farmers that ship their corn via the Mississippi River are feeling the pinch by $1 per bushel thanks to higher per-bushel shipping costs, compared to farmers shipping by the Ohio River........

Mississippi River Shipping

     Leaders Talk River Shipping Concerns........

Several months of drought have lowered the level of the Mississippi River to critically low levels, and barge companies have opted to lighten their loads in order to safely navigate the river. Shipping companies have reduced their loads between 50 and 60%. This move makes the barge ride higher in the water, allowing them to traverse areas with shallow channels. Officials held a meeting Monday to discuss the river situation.......

Many animal species are affected by the low water levels along the Mississippi River, and several are thriving. Fish such as the pallid sturgeon use shallow water to spawn, as well as to get out of the river's current. When water levels are low, juvenile fish have fewer places to hide. Birds like the interior least tern nest on sand bars. When river levels are low, the birds have more sandbar to nest on........

Hey Bill,

Recently I came across two pictures I thought I'd share. Both of them are of my "Somebeach". Isn't it amazing how the same scene can look so much different? And how each conveys a completely different feeling or emotion? They say-beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But, it's really hard to believe that anyone could see much beauty in pic 2-blahhh! But hey, I'm just a warm blooded river rat waiting for spring!

Corps releasing additional water from Carlyle Lake to aid Mississippi River traffic

Carlyle Lake is a multipurpose project located along the Kaskaskia River in Southern Illinois providing flood damage reduction, recreation, water supply, downstream navigation and fish and wildlife conservation.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District began increasing releases from Carlyle Lake yesterday in support of safe navigation on the Mississippi River.

Water from the lake will help provide the depth necessary for river commerce to pass Thebes, Ill., where rock formations pose a risk to navigation at -5 feet and below on the St. Louis gage. Carlyle Lake is located on the Kaskaskia River system in Southwest Illinois.

Carlyle Lake is one of few Corps reservoirs able to significantly capture water above its seasonal pool level to support navigation during the current drought. Maj. Gen John Peabody, Mississippi Valley Division commander, authorized all the lakes on the Upper Mississippi River system to hold an additional 10 percent above seasonal pool levels October 17 in anticipation of historic low levels on the Middle Mississippi.

Releases from Carlyle Lake began late Saturday, and will increase gradually to 4,000 cubic feet per second by Monday afternoon. The full extent of the releases is expected to reach Thebes by Dec. 24. This will provide an additional six inches of depth in this critical reach of the river. Releases will continue if needed until the river level increases through precipitation, or until Carlyle Lake reaches its winter pool elevation. With the additional release schedule, Carlyle Lake is expected to reach its winter pool level in approximately three weeks.

“With the Mississippi River watershed receiving less rain than forecasted, we are working to provide the water depth needed at a time when inches make a difference,” Peabody said. “We’ll continue to work closely with the navigation industry and our partners in the U.S. Coast Guard to keep the vital artery for commerce open.”

The releases are one of many measures the Corps and the U.S. Coast Guard are using in coordination with river industry to keep commerce moving during the drought. Additional measures include removing rock along the riverbed near Thebes, which is expected to begin this week. This work will provide a permanent improvement to the Middle Mississippi and will reduce risk to river traffic in low water. Additionally, dredging has been ongoing since early July, with the U.S. Army Dredge Potter moving more than 6 million cubic yards of sediment out of the navigation channel.

Grafton Ferry

River Dredging To Start In March........

Recently, Grafton's Mayor Tom Thompson stated that the Grafton Ferry should be up and running in the spring. Grafton must perform dredging in order to run the ferry between Illinois and Missouri. Mayor Thompson added that the state has approved the funding for the dredging, and final preparations are being made so work can begin in March. Low water levels along the Mississippi River should not affect ferry operations........

On Monday, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, D-Ill set up a meeting with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Mississippi River User and Stakeholder members due to the serious condition of the Mississippi River. The meeting was to discuss strategies for maintaining a navigation channel along the river.     Missouri River Alliance Split Over Mississippi's Troubles........

During last year's flooding along the Missouri River, a group of senators formed the Missouri River Working Group to shepherd in a new era of cooperation following years of fighting over water rights. The first real challenge for the Missouri River Working Group, the possibility of a navigation shutdown along the Mississippi River has the Missouri River senators up to their old tricks. Lower Missouri River states believe increases in water released from upstream Missouri River reservoirs can ease low water conditions along the Mississippi River. Upper Missouri River states are not wanting to release more water from the reservoirs in order to deal with drought conditions in those states........

Mississippi River Shipping

    Low Water Means Lighter Loads........

Barge pilots are having to deal with narrower channels and lighter loads thanks to low water levels along the Mississippi River. Towboat pilot Paul Roos stated that the Mississippi River is fairly straight around St. Louis, but navigating south of St. Louis can be tricky because of all the twists and turns. Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard say that the river is still safe, and barges are still moving........

Mississippi River Levels

   Contractors Starting On Blasting Tuesday........

Starting Tuesday, a six mile stretch of the Mississippi River will be closed to shipping so that contractors may safely use explosives to blast massive rock formations near Thebes, Illinois. Barges looking to pass through the area will need to line up and wait for an eight hour window that the six mile portion of the river will be open. The blasting project was supposed to begin in February, but was started early at the request of lawmakers........

NOTICE TO NAVIGATION - RM 185.5 - L&D 27
All navigation interests are advised that removal of the LD 27 D/S protection cell has been postponed until after 10 Dec 2012. In order to protect the damaged cell from impact, the spud barge will remain until after 10 Dec 2012. Helper boat requirements and availability HAVE CHANGED - SEE NOTICE TO NAVIGATION PN 12-15.

All navigation interests are advised of an obstruction (embedded metal) at the Main Lock lower I-wall bulkhead slot, just below the I-wall miter gate. The embedded metal corner protection on the U/S side of the bulkhead slot protrudes into the lock chamber roughly 3" from the wall. It is considered a hazard to passing tows and all mariners are advised from now until further notice to favor the east wall so as not to rub in this area of the main lock. The district will advise when repairs are made.

The 1200' main lock will be closed for miter gate replacement and embedded metal repairs from 10 Dec 2012 til 1 March 2013. During this time the 600’ aux lock will be open and the Government will provide the services of a helper boat to pull cuts from the 600' chamber. The auxiliary lock will have short intermittent closures between 17 Dec 2012 and 31 Dec 2012 to facilitate removal of the damaged protection cell. Specific durations and details will be announced. All navigation interests should be alert for, and abide by, any special instructions that may be issued by the Lockmaster during these timeframes.

Mississippi River Shipping

River May Shut Down By Christmas........

The worst drought in 50 years has lowered the level of the Mississippi River to near record lows, and shipping may shut down within a few weeks. The National Weather Service recently released their latest four week forecast, which states that without rainfall, the Mississippi River will reach historic lows. The St. Louis shipping industry is calling on the White House to order the release of more water from the Missouri River reservoirs to keep water levels high enough for shipping........

More lawsuits have been filed against Union Electric on behalf of five landowners whose property allegedly is within the utility's original project boundaries. Apparently, there is a dispute over the titles to these five properties, and the plaintiffs are requesting that the court make a declaratory judgment of ownership. These and other lawsuits came after AmrenUE advised 1,500 property owners that all or part of their properties are within the utility's project boundaries........

Mississippi River Shipping

    Barge Operators Fear River Closures........

Low levels along the Mississippi River mean that less cargo tonnage may be moved aboard a barge, as drafts are restricted during times of low water. Draft refers to how deep a vessel sits in the water. Normally, a barge may sit 10 to 11 feet below water. Current river levels have operators loading their barges to no more than eight feet. Additionally, barges moving upriver from the Gulf of Mexico are carrying reduced loads as well. If the river falls much more, shipping operations may shut down........

News Release From BoatUS

Year-End Gift to BoatUS Foundation Helps Recreational Boating

ALEXANDRIA, Va., December 13, 2012 – Boaters can help themselves this holiday season by making a tax-deductible, year-end gift to the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit education and outreach organization operating more than a dozen programs benefitting targeting boaters. Donations are used year-round to help those on the water stay safe and to help keep our waterways clean. A donation as little as $5 can help:
• $5 covers the cost of a set of informational decals for a monofilament fishing line recycling bin (BoatUS.com/foundation/monofilament).

• $10 buys a life jacket for the Kid’s Life Jacket Loaner Program, which offers right-sized life jackets for the afternoon or weekend at no cost to mom and dad at over 500 loaner sites across the nation (BoatUS.com/foundation/LJLP).

• $25 helps defray the cost of the free BoatUS Foundation Online Boating Safety Course, which is loaded with interactive animations, videos and photos to give boaters an education that goes well beyond the basics of boating – all from the comfort of home. The NASBLA-approved course also fulfills the boating safety education requirement in 33 states and can earn a discount on insurance (BoatUS.org/onlinecourse).

• $100 replenishes supplies for oil spill response kits at marinas helping them respond to small spills (BoatUS.com/foundation/brochure/ProductDirectory.pdf).

• $250 will pay for a new battery for an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) that can be affordably rented for the occasional race, rally or crossing (BoatUS.com/foundation/epirb).

To make a donation, go to BoatUS.com/foundation/donate.htm, or you may send a check by mail to: BoatUS Foundation, 880 South Pickett Street, Alexandria, VA 22304. For more information on giving, you can also call 800-245-2628.

Mississippi River Near Memphis, Tennessee

    River On The Rise ....

As of Wednesday, the river was at minus 3.4 feet. It is expected to reach 6.1 feet by December 17. This increase in water levels will allow dock operations to be reestablished. The National Weather Service is predicting that the Mississippi River will drop to about 9 feet by the end of the month........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

The Water Tastes Funny In Hannibal........

Recently, the Hannibal Board of Public Works began to receive phone calls for odd smelling and tasting water. Similar problems have been reported in Quincy, Illinois as well. Both municipalities draw their drinking water from the Mississippi River. Apparently, low rainfall has caused brown algae growth in the water, giving the water an odd taste and smell. The Hannibal BPW is using powder-activated carbon to counter the issue........

    River's Infrastructure Crucial To Farmers........

Farmers tend to worry when the river levels fall, as it is their economic lifeline. Tens of billions of dollars worth of agricultural goods from across the Midwest are moved via the Mississippi River. Tuesday, agribusiness leaders and farmers from the region got together to discuss the crumbling river infrastructure. The current low water conditions is allowing the deterioration to become more prominent........

The Delta Queen Riverboat

The "Save the Delta Queen" Newsletter

Dear Steamboater,

right before christmas there is good news for all who want to see the historic Delta Queen back into operations as paddlewheeler cruise ship: The Delta Queen will not be sold to New Smyrna Beach, Florida, as a permanentely moored hotel ship. Local investor Wayne Heller has pulled out of negotiations to buy the historic paddlewheeler for this purpose after he was not able to get the final okay for this project from the City of New Smyrna Beach.

Wayne Heller said, the city „missed a tremendous opportunity“ while steamboat activists willing to save the Delta Queen in her original form as an operation riverboat are relieved that the deal fell through. Heller’s plans where to modify the Delta Queen in a way that made it almost impossible to bring the Delta Queen back as a cruise ship any time later. Also there was lots of concern regarding the potential future location of the Delta Queen in a salt water environment and very much exposed to hurricanes.

New Smyrna City Manager Pam Brangccio told the Daytona Beach New-Journal she thinks Heller bailing out oft he Delta Queen deal doesn’t have much to do with the city but said „he’s not buying the boat because oft he cost involved with renovating the boat. […] It was a business decision on his part to not purchase the boat.“

The Delta Queen will now stay at Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she’s been since 2009, being operated as a hotel, lounge and restaurant while being maintained and kept in a fully operational status with a lot of help from volunteers and former employees oft he Delta Queen Steamboat Company respectively Majestic America Line.

So, what’s next? The decision from Wayne Heller to give up his plans to move the Delta Queen to Florida will give more time for finding alternative plans for the future of the Delta Queen. Her future is open again, which for now is for sure a good thing.
The river cruising business is picking up, big time, not only in Europe but also in the US. American Cruise Lines and American Queen Steamboat Company being very successful on the Mississippi River, there might also be a new chance for the Delta Queen.

Merry Christmas to all of you and may the year 2013 be the lucky year for the Delta Queen!

Yours Sincerely,
Franz Neumeier

Drinking Water Smells And Tastes Odd........

On Tuesday, Illinois American Water addressed customer concerns about the drinking water having a strange odor and taste. Karen Cotton, spokeswoman for Illinois American Water stated that the unusual odor and taste is caused by the low levels of the Mississippi River altering the composition of the water.     Coast Guard Cutter Chippewa: Keeping commerce flowing

Posted by LT Stephanie Young, Tuesday, December 11, 2012

In May the Mississippi River underwent many drastic changes as high water conditions persisted. Just six months later, Mother Nature reversed course and sent the river to record-breaking low water levels. With the drastic changes to the river levels, the Coast Guard works tirelessly to keep the Mississippi River safe for mariners. One of the many units dedicated to maritime safety is Coast Guard Cutter Chippewa, a river buoy tender homeported in Buchanan, Tenn.

A crewmember of the Coast Guard Cutter Chippewa removes a rusted buoy from the Mississippi River. The crew removed and replaced damaged and defective buoys. Photo courtesy of Jeff L. Yates.

The 75-foot Chippewa, with its aids-to-navigation barge, is 205 feet long and 30 feet wide. The cutter was put into service in 1965 and has since maintained navigational aids on the Mississippi River. The Chippewa’s area of responsibility runs from mile marker 918 on the Ohio River to mile marker 981 in Cairo, Ill. Additionally, the crew maintains aids from Chester, Ill., on the upper Mississippi River to Cairo. Cairo is geographically located where the upper and lower Mississippi rivers and the Ohio River all meet.

With a crew of 14, the Chippewa works from sunrise to sunset on underway trips up to a week at a time. Their work consists of moving and maintaining buoys using manpower, the cutter’s capstan and crane, to cutting down the brush and trees that are in the way of navigational aids using equipment such as chainsaws, brush cutters, machetes and hatches.

“I am very proud of what we do,” said Chief Petty Officer Richard Hasenstab, a boatswain’s mate on the Chippewa. “Setting aids down on the river may seem monotonous, but it is very important in keeping commerce flowing through the United States.”

With the current low water situation, the Chippewa plays a vital role, as they are constantly on call as the water levels drop. According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi was at nearly two feet below gauge on Saturday, and it is expected to reach six feet below around the end of the month. The all-time low for the river recorded at St. Louis was 6.2 feet below gauge recorded in 1940. As the Chippewa arranges buoys in the Mississippi River, the buoys let mariners know where it is safe to sail, prevent groundings and ensures their safe navigation. In the past year, the Chippewa has serviced approximately 1,990 buoys, traveling 7,002 miles across the Mississippi River.

“What we do plays a huge role in the river,” said Fireman Michael Quinones, crewmember on the Chippewa. “Without us going out there and replacing all the buoys, it’s not possible to transit safely up and down the Mississippi River.”

With billions of dollars worth of commerce traveling up and down the Mississippi River each year, Coast Guard units such as the Chippewa ensure vessels transporting goods vital to the nation’s economy make it there safely. According to the National Park Service, the agricultural products and the huge agribusiness industry that has developed in the basin produce 92 percent of the nation’s agricultural exports, 78 percent of the world’s exports in feed grains and soybeans and most of the livestock and hogs produced nationally.

Coast Guard Cutter Chippewa on was put into service in 1965 and has since maintained navigation aids on the Mississippi River. Photo courtesy of Jeff L. Yates.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Nathan Kirk, a damage control crewman on the Chippewa, said when his ship pulls up to port, many of the locals wonder what the Coast Guard does in the Midwest. He proudly lets them know about their mission in ensuring navigational safety.

“The job that we do gives us a sense of pride,” said Kirk. “If it wasn’t for us navigating and marking the river, then the industry wouldn’t be able to transport their supplies such as coal. Industries burn the coal and help people receive electricity for their homes.”

Whether high or low water, the Chippewa and its crew ensure aids vital to the maritime community are on station and watching properly. No matter what Mother Nature has in her playbook, the crew will be underway and at the ready.
