River Closure Could Be Later Than Anticipated........

Shippers that use the Mississippi River are preparing for the closure of a 200 mile section of the river between St. Louis and Cairo, Illinois. The majority of commerce along the river would come to a halt. However, it is thought that the closure will not come during December as originally anticipated, but in January. According to Mark Fuchs, a National Weather Service Hydrologist in St. Louis, the timetable has shifted because low river levels are inducing moisture from the Missouri River floodplain to flow back into the river........

Drought Factors In On Missouri River Releases........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is continuing to slow water releases from the Gavins Point Dam to minimum levels as drought conditions continue along the Missouri River Basin, which saw massive flooding only a year ago. Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Goodland

Yesterday was seven months into our adventure. When I reflect on the whole experience up to now, it's hard to believe all the things we've done and places we've visited, and there are so many more places to see. They will most likely consist of views of land and water.
I was also reflecting on our interview with the writer from Heartland Boating that we did last Friday. One thing I wanted to convey, and I'm not sure I did, was that after a length of time, after the initial shock, or novelty, wears off, the experience of living on the boat boils down to just living, period. So, if you cannot find some way to be happy with whatever you are doing in your current lifestyle, or mate, it is doubtful that living on a boat is going to improve matters. The fact is that personalities won't change with the scenery, (you hope not anyway) and problems and challenges still occur, maybe even ones more challenging than you are accustomed to. We definitely are still enjoying this, but I do tend to "climb fences that haven't been built yet", it's inherent genetically. I am constantly reminding myself to resist any urges to worry about the future, just make a rough plan and see what pans out.

Drought Adds To Barge Issues On The Mississippi........

Low river levels are only contributing to the issues facing barge operators along the Mississippi River. Agricultural, environmental, government and barge industry officials started debating the capacity of the Mississippi River well before the 2012 drought exacerbated river traffic. Back in September, close to 500 barges backed up when the Chain of Rocks Lock and Dam was closed for repairs........

Officials from Mississippi River states are requesting that the federal government order the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to increase releases from Missouri River reservoirs. North Dakota's Congressmen state that the Corps has assured them that no Missouri River water will be used to alleviate low ater conditions along the Mississippi River........

Corps Say Dredging Should Keep River Open........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has stated that dredging alone should keep commercial barge traffic moving along the Mississippi River between St. Louis, Missouri and Cairo, Illinois. The Corps is also positioning other dredges in the region, in order to address problem areas as they are discovered. The Corps will not release more water from the Missouri River reservoirs, but if the need arises, they will release water from Carlyle Lake. The lake flows into the Kaskaskia River, which flows into the Mississippi River. This move would raise water levels about six inches........

Five Days In Marco Island

Smokehouse Bay is in the heart of Marco Island. If you are coming up the river from the Gulf of Mexico, there is a small channel on the south side of the river that leads into Collier Bay. Smokehouse is past Collier Bay as you weave your way through the well marked channel in this no wake zone. The Esplanade, shown in the picture, is a resort and condominium complex on the East side of Smokehouse Bay and sitting right out front is the Esplanade Marina. They don't have services or fuel, but they do have some transient dockage. We anchored just a bit away from it, right in front of a small city park.
After our fun day spent with Bert and Renee on Sunday, we wanted to just take a breather all day Monday, so we did. On Monday night we decided to watch some T.V. and in spite of being right in the heart of Marco Island, we couldn't get any reception, so we made plans to move the next day, out into the bay a little further.
Rosie had decided on Monday that she didn't really want to do a "spa day" on Tuesday, that she would rather spend the whole day with me. You'd think she would be over that by now.
Instead, on Tuesday, we took the dinghy over to the small dock right behind the nearby Winn Dixie and we walked to West Marine and I bought an "oil extractor", a device that creates suction by pumping a handle, and with a hose inserted into a dipstick, will suck the oil out of an engine. I wanted to use it to change the transmission oil in each of our transmissions. (The device worked as advertised, but I couldn't get the plugs out that house the oil filters on the transmissions, so I had to install new oil without cleaning the filters. Next time.)
We also bought some new swimwear for me, and a couple of warm up suits for Rosie. We got back to the boat and Rosie went to unzip the top for one of the warm up suits and the zipper pull just broke off of the zipper, practically disintegrating in her hand. So now we had to walk back to that store to make a return. Stores in tourist areas don't mind selling you junk because they know you won't be around to return it when it breaks.

Fishy Tales From Southwest France

    Catfish Hunting Pigeons.... On Land....

Some European catfish in Southwest France are exhibiting peculiar hunting behavior, similar to dolphins and killer whales. The catfish are jumping on land to hunt live pigeons. The fish, ranging between 3 to 5 feet, thrust themselves from the shallows onto land where they grab a pigeon, and then wriggle their bodies back into the water to swallow their prey. Researchers have taken to calling the fish "freshwater killer whales"........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

Debate On River Course Of Action Continues........

On Thursday, the National Weather Service announced that the level of the Mississippi River is not falling as rapidly as once feared. There is still cause for concern, however. The worst drought in years brought the low water levels, and if they drop much further, the river could become impassible. Illinois officials are working to keep barge traffic moving. Most plans include taking water from the Missouri River to raise the level of the Mississippi River........

Missouri River Management

Calls For Corps To Release Water........

Recently, U.S. Representative Aaron Schock, R-Peoria requested that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers restore some of the water flow to the Missouri River to prevent a cessation of river shipping over the next few months. Schock stated that the Corps typically curbs the amount of water flowing from the Missouri River Basin into the Mississippi River during the winter. Barge companies are already reducing loads, and further reductions, or even a halt in shipping is likely........

River History....

December 07, 2009 in River History

A news story from waow.com reported that Jake Stachovak was prepping for the trip of a lifetime: Paddle a sea kayak 5,000 miles around the eastern portion of the United States.

Jake was planning to depart from Portage, Wisconsin, paddle down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, eventually returning to Portage. He had to change his plans because of the very cold weather in the northern United Sates and showed up in St. Louis a few days later to start his journey.

Missouri Department of Conservation

Thomas Hill Reservoir Conservation Area Fishing Jetty

MACON, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) recently finished improvements that will help hunters and anglers with impaired mobility enjoy the Thomas Hill Reservoir Conservation Area (CA) and the Atlanta Conservation Area (CA).

At Thomas Hill Reservoir CA, the fishing jetty near the Highway-T boat ramp has been upgraded with a concrete surface, parking pad and walkway. These changes make the fishing jetty accessible to all anglers including those confined to wheelchairs or who have other mobility limitations.

“These improvements allow angler access that previously wasn’t available at Thomas Hill Lake,” said MDC Wildlife Management Biologist Chad Smith. “We plan to add some additional fish attracting structures around the fishing jetty this winter and hope all anglers get outdoors and enjoy this improved opportunity.”

The new fishing jetty is open year round and does not require a special permit to use. However, if you are going to cast a line, be sure you have a proper fishing license.

The Thomas Hill Reservoir CA main entrance is 5.25 miles west of Macon on Highway 36, then 10 miles south on Route C to College Mound, and 2.4 miles west on Route T.

For those wanting to get outdoors and try their luck at deer hunting, three hunter access points were added this fall at the Atlanta CA. These access points allow hunters with mobility challenges to drive to a designated spot where they can hunt from their vehicles. A special use permit, along with an exemption to hunt from your vehicle, is required to use these designated spots. To obtain the permit, contact Smith at 660-385-4920 or chad.smith@mdc.mo.gov.

“This is a great opportunity for hunters who have mobility impairments to enjoy the conservation area and harvest a deer” said Smith. “MDC staff work hard on food plots and habitat management surrounding these access points to try and attract deer to the sites to increase the potential for a successful hunt.”

The Atlanta CA is located five miles north of Macon on Highway 63, and two miles west on Route AX, then 2.5 miles north on Jupiter Avenue.

MDC is committed to making its programs, services and outdoor resources available for all Missourian’s to enjoy and to discover nature. For more information about these areas, visit MDC’s website at mdc.mo.gov and search “conservation area atlas.”

Command Sergeant Major Karl J. Groninger recently visited the Vicksburg District's Mat Sinking Unit with Joel Brown(MVK) and Tommy Hengst (MVK)

Check out North Shore Marina's New Facebook Page !

Vicksburg, Ms... U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Command Sergeant Major Karl J. Groninger recently visited the Vicksburg District's Mat Sinking Unit (MSU). CSM Groninger is the senior enlisted advisor to the USACE commanding officers and staff, headquartered in Washington, DC. His goal is to ensure safety, training, and adequate living conditions of the entire crew, especially the dozens of newly hired wage grade employees on the MSU.

While visiting, he was given a complete overview of the operations of the MSU. "The unique capability provided by the Mat Sinking Unit is an example of USACE's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the levee systems protecting the people, towns and infrastructure along the banks of the Mississippi River and the navigability of the river," Groninger said.

The MSU is currently working on the Mississippi River at Marchand bend near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on river mile180. The MSU will lay mat at this location until 12 December. The next location is Saint Alice bend on river mile 164. Thus far this season, the MSU has placed 273,821 squares or approximately 628 acres of articulated concrete mats on the banks of the Mississippi River. During this longer, six-month, revetment season the goal is to place 442,786 squares covering approximately 1,018 acres.

The MSU is the only one of its kind in the world and distributes articulated concrete mat squares on the banks of the Mississippi River. These concrete mats assist with the prevention of erosion and protection submerged river banks. The MSU is composed of the Motor Vessel Benyaurd with the quarter boats, the Motor Vessel William James with the mat sinking plant and the Motor Vessel Harrison.

This revetment season extends through February 2013 and includes a larger than normal program with critical repairs being made to sites damaged as a result of the 2011 historic flood. The next season will begin June 2013. To learn more about the Mat Sinking Unit and the Vicksburg District, visit www.mvk.usace.army.mil .

Yesteryear's Pictures of the Day in 2008......   were from Captain Greg Sadowski, who hails out of Woodland Marina.  Greg and crew are on another river delivery trip.

Bill,

Here's a picture of the "Delta Queen", and a few others.
I took this picture from the "Naples Princess" late yesterday as we passed through New Orleans on the Mississippi River.

It's moored next to the "Mississippi Queen". The temperature here is about 30 degrees warmer than St Louis.

Bayou Labatre Alabama tonight. That's where Forest Gump started "Bubba Gump Shrimp"

We are on our way to Naples Florida with this new $4million, mini cruise ship, 105 ft. Skipperliner.

I don't know when we'll get back to St. Louis

.
Cheers and Happy Holidays from the Naples Princess crew,

New St. Louis Fire Department Boat

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

New Boats Patrolling St. Louis Riverfront........

St. Louis fire/rescue workers will be will be better prepared to make rescues along the Mississippi River between the Jefferson Barracks Bridge and the lock and dam at Alton, with the arrival of 2 new rescue boats.

In addition to the new 27 foot and 40 foot boats, there will be a new base of operations just north of the King Bridge at the former site of the Admiral. The base will allow the boats to be lifted from the river in order to protect them from debris in the water and weather.

U.S. Representative Russ Carnahan was very active in obtaining close to $3 million for the 3 projects. The first project, a 27 foot fire boat was funded by the 2007 Port Security Grant, which is meted out by the Department of Homeland Security.

The City of St. Louis was supposed to come up with matching funds for the boat, but was not able to in the allotted time. Rep. Carnahan negotiated an extension with FEMA and DHS so the $300,000 boat could be built and delivered.

On December 4, firefighters got to check out their new 27 foot fire/rescue boat. The vessel was built by Safe Boats International, of Bremerton, Washington. She is fitted out with twin 225 hp outboards, which will give her a top speed of 43 mph. She is also equipped with a 500 gpm fire pump.

The fire boat will be used for primary response on the Mississippi River, and will be available to be used by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. Joint training with the vessel will be coming up.

On Wednesday, a revised forecast for the Mississippi River levels is presenting a bit of relief for barge shippers. Apparently, the Mississippi River is not falling as quickly as previously thought. The director of the SEMO port stated that while the forecast revisions are welcome, they are not making the problem go away. He added that it is possible that that the revisions may push back closures along the river by about a week........

A December Sail From Palisades to Grafton

Pictures of the Day .... were sent to us by Capt'n Mike Costello

Saturday we put together 9 sailboats and sailed from Palisades to Grafton. We had Lunch at the Ruebel Restaurant. They have great food and a restored bar from the 1904 World's Fair, very impressive. Grafton is always fun and all the restaurants and stores always appreciate the business. After that we strolled down and got an ice cream before we headed back to our boats. Yes, eating ice cream in December on the streets of Grafton, sweet. It was 72 degrees. The breezes picked up considerably on the way back and we all rolled into our harbors about dusk. It was a great day.

Thanks Barry for putting it together for us. Sandy Costello snapped the photos of Matt Flerlage’s boat, Tuesdays Child with the colorful genoa. Denny Swandt is crewing for him.

NOTICE TO NAVIGATION - RM 185.5 - L&D 27

All navigation interests are advised that removal of the LD 27 D/S protection cell has been postponed until after 10 Dec 2012. In order to protect the damaged cell from impact, the spud barge will remain until after 10 Dec 2012. Helper boat requirements and availability HAVE CHANGED - SEE NOTICE TO NAVIGATION PN 12-15.

All navigation interests are advised of an obstruction (embedded metal) at the Main Lock lower I-wall bulkhead slot, just below the I-wall miter gate. The embedded metal corner protection on the U/S side of the bulkhead slot protrudes into the lock chamber roughly 3" from the wall. It is considered a hazard to passing tows and all mariners are advised from now until further notice to favor the east wall so as not to rub in this area of the main lock. The district will advise when repairs are made.

The 1200' main lock will be closed for miter gate replacement and embedded metal repairs from 10 Dec 2012 til 1 March 2013. During this time the 600’ aux lock will be open and the Government will provide the services of a helper boat to pull cuts from the 600' chamber. The auxiliary lock will have short intermittent closures between 17 Dec 2012 and 31 Dec 2012 to facilitate removal of the damaged protection cell. Specific durations and details will be announced. All navigation interests should be alert for, and abide by, any special instructions that may be issued by the Lockmaster during these timeframes.

River Levels

    Answer Man Explains River Levels........

M.D. of Belleville asked the bnd.com Answer Man to explain river stages, and questioned how there can be negative water levels when there is water in the river. In the 1800s, river users decided to standardize the measuring of the river, but instead of measuring the depth, zero was chosen at some arbitrary level. Mike Peterson of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stated that on Tuesday the Mississippi River at St. Louis was -2.1 feet, which is 2.1 feet below that arbitrary level........

     River Re-Opened After Barge Re-Floated........

Early Tuesday, an 18 barge tow ran aground at river mile marker 695 close to Robinsonville, Mississippi. The U.S. Coast Guard shut down navigation for several hours, jamming 12 upriver and 23 downriver vessels. The Coast Guard re-opened the river to navigation after refloating the tow. The Mississippi River is expected to fall to record or near record levels during December, possibly restricting or even halting navigation between St. Louis, Missouri and Cairo, Illinois........

ALEXANDRIA, Va., December 3, 2012 – (above) The young ladies of Brownie Troop 915 boarded the towing vessel Captain Wise of the TowBoatUS Potomac Marine fleet for a “boat” ride at the 43rd Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Parade held this weekend in Old Town Alexandria, VA. Over 100 Scottish Clans, pipe and drum bands, Scottish dancers, dignitaries and, of course, Santa Claus, marched through the cobblestone streets to the cheers of thousands of merry makers – many in kilts. With the help of TowBoatUS Potomac Marine’s Captain Terry Hill, the girls also earned a merit badge.

The Parade annually draws more than 30,000 and is hosted by The Campagna Center, which draws together the resources of the Alexandria community to strengthen families and provide programs that help children become caring, productive adults. Girl Scout Brownie Troop 915 represents Waynewood in Alexandria, VA. With 3.2 million members, Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. TowBoatUS Potomac marine is part of the nation’s largest on-the-water towing service for recreational boaters, the Alexandria-based BoatUS Towing Services. Fleet Captain Bill Tullock's final party of the year was a great time. The festivities began in the Hospitality Room about 3 PM with the "D Dock DJs" providing the tunes to go with the appetizers and beverages. About 6 ish everyone put on their party duds and headed to the banquet room where they enjoyed a fine dinner while the "Daves Not Here" band set up. After a few introductions of the 2012 Board members and welcoming the incoming 2013 Board of Directors everyone got down to some serious fun and dancing. Many Thanks to all that helped make this another great time

Asian Carp Update

     Carp Suit Thrown Out........

Monday, a federal judge tossed out a lawsuit filed by five states wanting barriers installed in Chicago area waterways that would prevent Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes. Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin filed suit claiming that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Chicago's Metropolitan Water Reclamation District are causing a public nuisance by not physically separating the Mississippi River Basin form the Great Lakes. U.S. District Judge John Tharp stated that he could not order the organizations to block the waterways, because an act of Congress is required........

Eight Days At Keewadin Island

We spent eight days anchored off of Keewadin Island and would perhaps still be there except for the fact that we finally ran out of water, and we wanted to meet Bert and Renee from St. Louis who were coming down for a meeting for Bert's work.

Until then, though, we spent every day doing a little of this and that on the boat, and we did spend one afternoon on the beach. We visited the "burger boat" on this day and each had a delicious hamburger with all the trimmings for not a bad price of $6. Holly pretty much ruined any chance of making new friends by barking her head off at anyone who remotely looked as though they might stop and chat. She does look cute, however, in her neckerchief.
Mark and Terri came down in their boat from Naples on Thursday and brought much needed beer supplies. They also brought their very well behaved dog, Millie, who tried to set an example to Holly and did not utter a sound all afternoon. Holly did not take the hint, but we were able to get in some conversation between frequent comments from Holly on one thing or another.

Brownie Troop "Boards" TowBoatUS Potomac Marine at 43rd Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Parade

TowBoatUS Potomac Marine provides towing assistance, jump-start, fuel-drop off and ungrounding services on the Potomac River.

Yesteryear's Pictures of the Day in 2009 ----  was a shot of a very unique looking motor vessel named the  Pickett Hastings traveling up-river in front of the bluffs on October 4th, 2009.

Ike also built an amphibious air plane that is hoisted on to the front deck of the Pickett between flights and according to the American Sternwheel Association, this sternwheeler is the only aircraft carrier in its registry.

Ike fought in World War II and then was a teacher for 30 years.  Now he travels the rivers.

Mississippi River Near St. Louis, Missouri

Barge Traffic May Stop Due To River Levels........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reducing water releases from the reservoirs along the Upper Missouri River, just as the economy and the Mississippi River need that water. Within a few days, barge traffic near St. Louis, Missouri could be shut down. Recently, farm, oil, steel, manufacturing and other river industry leaders sent a "doomsday" letter to President Obama, calling upon him to do something about it........
