Partner to Reward Water Safety over Memorial Day Weekend

Kaskaskia River Project – Memorial Day weekend may have been a hot one, but that didn’t stop visitors from safely enjoying the holiday weekend on the Kaskaskia River. The weekend provided great weather for boaters, campers, and fishermen at the Kaskaskia River Project. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Park Rangers were on the lookout to catch individuals wearing their life jackets. Those caught by the Rangers were rewarded with an “I got caught wearing my life jacket on the Kaskaskia River Project” t-shirt. News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS Gives Thanks to Boaters Who Spoke Up: "Save My GPS"

LightSquared Files for Bankruptcy

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 30, 2012 – Nearly a year ago, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) began asking recreational boaters, anglers and the marine industry to speak out about the potential loss of reliable GPS – the country’s sole electronic navigation system. A private venture, LightSquared, backed by billions of dollars in funding, had plans to build a nationwide 4G broadband cellular telephone network but unfortunately, tests had shown this plan would interfere with GPS signals creating grave safety concerns. The company recently announced that it has filed for bankruptcy after the build-out of the network was halted by the FCC.

“Boaters can appreciate having GPS first hand,” said BoatUS President Margaret Podlich. “They know it will get them safely home, help them find the best fishing, meet friends for an afternoon raft-up, and greatly speed their rescue if the day goes bad. We thank the 18,000 boaters and other GPS users who wrote the FCC asking the guardian of the nation’s airwaves to ensure the future integrity of the GPS signal, and the FCC for listening and acting on our concerns.”

Even with the company’s May 14 Chapter 11 filing, LightSquared continues to be a challenging adversary, stating, “The voluntary Chapter 11 filing is intended to give LightSquared sufficient breathing room to continue working through the regulatory process that will allow us to build our 4G wireless network.” Under federal bankruptcy law, LightSquared would maintain exclusive control for several months over the right to craft a path to emerge from Chapter 11. The company originally asked the FCC for permission to build 40,000 network ground stations across the country. Recent government reports concluded interference issues with the GPS system could not be overcome.

BoatUS is a member of the Coalition to Save Our GPS, which worked to resolve this threat to the GPS system. After losing their only other viable navigation system (LORAN) in 2010 after the Department of Homeland Security shut the system down, boaters now solely rely on GPS for electronic navigation. The US Coast Guard’s emergency search and rescue system, Rescue 21, also now uses GPS to locate stricken vessels on over 41,746 miles of coastline, and mariners also rely on GPS-enabled communications with DSC VHF radios and emergency beacons to provide location information

Missouri River Flood Aftermath

Repairs To Fort Peck Dam Could Top $225 Million........

On Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released cost estimates for the proposed repairs to the Fort Peck Dam.  Repairs could cost over $225 million, however the Corps stated that budget shortfalls will only allow $46 million for damage assessments and repairs at this time.  The majority of the repairs would be made to the dam's spillway.  Last year's flooding damaged the dam's spillway gated and eroded areas downstream from the dam........

Several records were set during the 2012 Spring Shoreline Beautification Cleanup at the Lake of the Ozarks.  A record 74 Adopt-the-Shoreline member groups turned out for the 21st annual event.  The volunteers scoured a record 575 miles of shoreline, collecting 1,037 cubic yards of trash.  The amount of trash collected was the least amount collected in the history of the cleanup, but that may be a testament to how clean the lake is now........

Hey, Bill,

Here are some shots from Sunday at the top of Two Branch slough. The sandbar is back (at least for a while). We tied up with some old friends that we met on this very sandbar 10 years ago. The first shot is of the 9 boat + 1 PWC, flotilla. I sent it full size if anyone wants to zoom in on this motley crew.
Pic #2: That PWC I mentioned belongs to the river legend himself, River Jim, 80 years old and still kickin' on the Mississippi.
Pic #3: A close up of the old gang, and I do mean old! (Just kidding guys! hahaha, right?)
Pic #4: Michael and his two river rats, Jack and Nathan.
Pic #5: Bruce, Mary (my lovely first mate) and Shirley. Like I said, we met this group of scalawags 10 years ago and found out at some point, that my cousin Gayle had married Bruce and Shirleys godson. It's a small world, even on the mighty Mississippi!

See, ya on the river, buddy!

    Rains Close Twin Cities Locks........

Heavy rains have added a significant amount of water to the Upper Mississippi River.  On Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers  closed three locks and dams in the Minneapolis-St. Paul region to recreational boaters.  The Corps typically close the locks to recreational boaters when the water flow is greater than 30,000 cubic feet per second.  The locks closed are the Upper and Lower St. Anthony Falls locks and dams, as well as Lock and Dam No.1.  They will likely remain closed for a week........

Investigators Burn Hulls To Learn Fire Investigation........

Last month, the International Association of Marine Investigators put together a marine fire investigation course to help create a uniform method of investigating boat fires.  Investigators use four classifications to describe a vessel fire:  natural, incendiary, accidental and undetermined.  The majority of vessel fires are accidental, and typically electrical in nature.  The economy has led to a slight increase in suspicious fires........

Back to the Harpeth River

We woke this morning at 7 A.M. and I called the Old Hickory Lock and Dam, told them where I was, and was told to come on down and they'd lock us through. By 8 A.M. they had spit us through and we were headed toward the Cheatham Lock and Dam 66 miles downstream.

A threatening sky prompted me to check the weather radar and a front was headed our way. The wind picked up and slacked off depending on which way we were headed on the twisty river and the temperatures were a relief from the ones we had over the sweltering weekend.

As we made our way toward Nashville, two sights that we saw on our way upriver were worthy of pictures. The plane "crashing" into the side of a bluff below someones house is one. The people here have a banner advertising a website, myhidyhole.com. Let me know what's on it if you check it out.

Dog Wearing Life Vest Survives Fall From Boat........

Sunday, a ten pound Pomeranian named Tank slipped from the back of a boat, into the Chicago River.  He was missing for several hours.  His owners spent seven hours searching the Chicago River for him.  Luckily, Tank was wearing his yellow life vest, and made it to shore not far from where he fell into the water.  Tank was found in a nearby park by Katherine Santos.  Santos saw a news report about Tank, and contacted the owner so he could be reunited with his family.........

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois

    The Grafton Ferry Remains Closed........

Small businesses in the city of Grafton are booming, however, the city is still without a ferry service across the Mississippi River.  Grafton's Mayor Tom Thompson states that not having a ferry is affecting local businesses.  More than a year ago, Grafton purchased the ferry business, as well as the landing on the Missouri side of the river.  But in order to re-open the ferry, the city needs to dredge the river.  Thompson said that state officials say that funding for the dredging is on the way........

A quick acting boater on Creve Coeur Lake saved the life of a drowning man by pulling him to safety by his hair.  Ward Twyford, retired assistant fire chief for Frontenac, and his wife were boating close to Creve Coeur Lake's beachfront when they saw an empty paddleboard go by.  Then, they heard cries for help.  Twyford motored toward the man, and got ahold of the sinking man........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Memorial Day Weekend Wrap Up

As planned, we spent the whole Memorial Day weekend on Old Hickory Lake. It seems like anyone with anything that would float was out this weekend and for once within recent memory it didn't rain the entire weekend, but boy was it hot here, as it was in most of the country.
Some folks we met last weekend called us and we spent some time with them and had a real good time again at Rudders, which is at Anchor High, the marina at the Old Hickory Lake Lock. Afterwards, we found our way back to a cove just up the lake called Wedding Cove. I'm not sure what the pecking order was when it came to naming this cove and Skinnydip Cove, but one was sure to come before the other.
As hot as it was on Saturday, it cooled down just fine on Saturday night for sleeping, but a big stork or something landed on the deck above our heads and woke us up. When I say "us", I mean Holly too, and her watch dog talents were again put to good use.

We stayed put in Wedding Cove on Sunday and thought we would just chill out and relax. We discovered that Holly really liked the rafts and we found her climbing on them we weren't watching and laying down too. I thought two rafts would be enough, turns out I really need three.

Here Rosie is taking a turn on her own raft, at times using the shade of the dinghy for a bit more relief from the heat. Our new friends Scott and Kay came by later in the afternoon to say hello, but left to attend to family and when the temperature cooled down some, we grilled some burgers and took a late swim.
We stayed put again in the same spot on Sunday night, but only one other boat shared our anchorage for the night. After breakfast on Monday morning some fishermen came floating by and it appeared that they were having motor trouble. I told them that I could tow them to where they needed to go, but they eventually got their flooded engine started and happily motored on.
We were in the mood for people watching, so it was back to Skinnydip Cove for us on Memorial Day. We just spent the whole day swimming and laying around, the heat making us lazy. Charging our batteries with a lazy day was just what we needed after a busy Friday and Saturday night.
We had already planned to lock down to Lake Barkley on Tuesday and head back to Kentucky Lake, about 200 miles away, and then I found out that our friend, Little John Bicknese, was racing their drag boat in Pisgah Cove at Kentucky Lake next Saturday, so we have added incentive to get back there in time for that. I think they won the event last year.
A storm came through Nashville and just missed us. We just got a little sprinkle, but again we get rain on this holiday, it never fails. After a very brief shower, Rosie and I had dinner and watched a little T.V., then I got to beat Rose at dominoes. I also wanted to fire off this brief blog post, plus it's still too hot to turn in.
I hope all of our friends and blog readers had a nice, safe weekend, and spent at least a few moments remembering what this holiday is all about

Missouri River Flood Aftermath

Some Levees Not Fixed, Landowners Must Foot The Bill........

There are many Missouri River levees that were damaged during the flooding of 2011 that still have not been repaired.  It seems that residents along the river will be picking up the tab for the repairs.  Pottawattamie County has hired Sundquist Engineering to figure out who is responsible for repairs to the levees.  There are several drainage districts responsible for the levees, and many of the levees have not been cared for since the 1950's........

Algae Bloom Discolors Portion Of The Lake........

Portions of Missouri's Table Rock Lake have been turned brown by a microscopic algae bloom.  Officials say that the bloom should be dispersing soon, and does not pose a health threat.  It is estimated that less than a third of the lake has been affected by the bloom.  Winds seem to have begun clearing the algae out.  It is believed that the bloom is caused by calm, sunny weather and abundant nutrients........

    Memorial Day Weekend

Our day and evening spent at Pearson's Cedar Creek Marina was a fun one. We took it easy during the afternoon, but still managed to meet some people passing by the boat, plus the owner of the marina came by and talked to us for a while. He looked just like any other worker there at the marina, dressed in an identical T-shirt as anyone else. Vern pitched in like any of his other employees and he could be seen doing all the various things that needed to be done including moving tables and pumping gas on occasion. Truly a man interested in running his business well.
The band started assembling their equipment right next to our boat, so by 6 P.M. we grabbed a convenient table and settled in with a bucket of icy cold Bud Lights.

Here you can see just how close we were parked as the band just started playing. I took the photo from another covered area with a bar and tables and by the time it got dark every table was full.

Back to Pearson's Cedar Creek Marina

This is our view as we pulled out of our anchorage yesterday morning at around 7A.M. We had our breakfast at the helm and it was a beautiful morning. We wanted to get to Gallatin, TN yesterday evening so we got an early start.

We weren't in too much of a hurry to not try some stuff out. Here I'm trolling a line behind the boat going our normal 7-8 miles per hour to see how the rod takes it. It appears that this will work just fine, now all I need is a fishing license.
By mid day we finally found out really where we were, according to the mile marker that was tacked to a tree. It's how it's done in these parts of the Cumberland River. We were ahead of schedule so we stopped for lunch and a swim behind a nice island and stayed over an hour.

By mid afternoon the temperature was heating up and I stopped for a dip in the middle of the river. We still had seen very little in the way of other boats with the exception of a bass boat or two.

Cocktail hour came fairly early due to the high temperatures, of course. Those little stainless steel ice cubes in Rosie's glass were a parting gift from our friends Carl and Mary. I wanted to show them that they are getting put to good use.

Let's Go Boating in The Pool !

Darryll wrote;

Growing up my dad always had a boat and we owned Blue Springs Pool in Fenton.  So, one day, probably over a few cold ones, my dad decided to put our boat in the pool.  With the help of my Uncle Buss and several of our regular customers, the motor was removed, fence taken down and the boat and motor carried into the pool where it was re-assembled!  If I recall correctly the boat was a 15' wood Delta with about a 40 horsepower Mercury.  This is the same boat I learned to drive in at Lake of the Ozarks.  Here's a couple of pics of the adventure.  In the starboard side pic I am the one standing in the pass through with my uncle driving.  In the port side pic my Dad is driving and I am the on the one in back with the paddle.

Enjoy, Darryll

     IDNR Stepping Up Carp Surveillance........

Thursday, Illinois fisheries biologists caught two 60 pound Asian carp in a Chicago area lagoon.  The fish were caught as part of an increased effort to eliminate the from Illinois waters.  The carp had most likely been in the lagoon for years, perhaps arriving there when it was stocked, or from a fisherman's bucket.  The lagoon is isolated from the Great Lakes, as well as from the canals connecting Lake Michigan to the Illinois River.  This year, the Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee intends to spend upwards of $12 million on trying to keep the Asian carp from reaching Lake Michigan........

Suit Filed Against Mineral Company Over Water Pollution.........

Recently, Illinois' Attorney General Lisa Madigan filed suit against Carrie Scharf Materials Co., alleging discharges from stockpiled road salt at their river terminal is contaminating the Illinois River.  The company brings in salt by barge, moves it via conveyor over the levee and stores it for future sale.  The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency inspected the facility from 2008 through 2011, and found salt residue on the conveyor supports, indicating that salt is spilling directly into the Illinois River........

The Run to Carthage, TN and the Cordell Hull Lock and Dam

By the time we left our anchorage this morning, pictured here last night once we settled in, it was nearly 10:30 A.M. and our goal was the Cordell Hull Lock and Dam, estimated to be 45 miles away or so.
The Cordell Lock is controlled by a crew from the Old Hickory Lock and Dam and advance notice must be given before requesting a lockage, at least a day ahead of time. When we decided to cruise the Cumberland River, we figured to only see the lake part of Old Hickory and not travel up the river past the wider part of the lake, so even heading up to the tail waters of Cordell Hull Dam was beyond our plan.
Our trip today felt like an expedition, sort of like Lewis and Clark short of a couple of coonskin caps. That is, if you can imagine Lewis saying to Clark, "Hey Clark old buddy, fetch me a cold one from the fridge while you're down there and I'll crank up some tunes."
The river got very narrow the further we went upstream, but stayed pretty deep until we got to Carthage, TN where we were in a river not 50 yards wide and at times 10 feet deep. The current increased as we approached the dam and I hailed the lock but didn't expect a response and we didn't get one.

The downside of this dam is not very scenic but this shot proves we were here and we wanted to make it this far on the Cumberland just to say we did. I know we could have said it anyway, but the truth is expensive sometimes and is worth every penny.
Northbound Swing Set quickly became Southbound Swing Set at twice the speed as the current whipped us into the dizzying speed of 12 miles per hour. I had picked out an anchorage on the way upriver and we calculated it to be about 2 hours back downstream. On the way up we passed what appeared to be a house under construction but no one was around, but on the way back down a guy was out and apparently was impressed with our presence heading downriver and he offered a friendly salute in our honor.
It wasn't too long before the upper end of the island came into view that I wanted to stay behind for the night. We made the turn around the bottom end and sneaked our way along a rock wall before making another 90 degree turn to reach the backside of the island. A nice deep slough welcomed us and we went about half way up in 18 feet of water before dropping the hook and settling to a stop.

Saved by the jacket: Holly S.
Tuesday, May 24, 2012

Posted by: LT Stephanie Young

In conjunction with National Safe Boating Week 2012 we will be featuring first-person accounts of those who survived an accident on the water. Today’s story comes from a younger boater who witnessed her cousin fall overboard after their boat made an unexpected turn. We are sharing his story here at Compass in the hopes you will share it with the littlest of boaters and always “wear it,” no matter what age you are.

Click on the above image to watch "Station Safewater," a children's safety cartoon aimed at teaching kids how to be safe on a boat, on a beach and while swimming. U.S. Coast Guard video.

This story originally appeared in National Safe Boating Council’s “Saved by the Jacket” and was written by Holly S., age 10.

Wearing your life jacket is very important. This story is about my family and I going on a boat in the water by my house.

A properly fitted life jacket, that won't ride up or come off, is a must for all boaters. U.S. Coast Guard photo.
One day, my family and I went on our boat in the river. When we got to the beach, my little cousin, Malcom, wouldn’t put on his life jacket. He always made jokes like that so we thought he was kidding.

As we were about to get into the boat, he did not put on his jacket. We had to beg him to put on his life jacket for a while when we were in the boat, and he would not put it on, but he finally did.

After we got out about half way, Malcom tore off his life jacket and threw it into the water.

The next thing I knew, my dog jumped in after the life jacket and swam in front of the boat! My dad made a sharp turn and Malcom fell into the river. He couldn’t swim and my dad started to pull on his pants leg and kept him under water. I had to jump in to get my dog off of him so he could come up.

1929 on the Mississippi River

Hello Bill,
These are the pictures I have told you about. They were taken in the Summer of 1929.  The one on the beach (top) was taken right across from what is now the Duck Club, facing down towards Grafton.  You can see the bluffs in the distant background.  The second guy from the right (sitting down) is my grandfather, Earl Gruenenfelder.  It was his boat.

The second picture(bottom), with the boat running, has my grandfather sitting up with my great-great grandmother towards the front, my great grandfather, Edmond Gruenefelder is in the middle wearing a hat, and my great grandmother in the rear.  It was taken in the little slough below the Duck Club.  They had a club house below North Shore from the late 20's that was eventually destroyed in the flood of '93.    I still have the anchor of this boat in my living room.

Hope you enjoy these,

Greg Jost
