Hi, Bill!,
Here are some shots from Mom's Day. We took a nice trip up to Cedar Hill for some great food and fun. That's Mary and our daughter Katy, plus as an added boat bonus we had the company of Anne and her boys, Jonh, Ceasar and Andres, (Y2Katy in the background). Later we beached at Enterprise for a little R&R and a lot of sand (look at those beach bums). On the way back we were intercepted by the scourge of the Mississippi river, the infamous pirate ship Gypsy Rose II. Captain Tim must have been in a good mood, since he passed us without firing a shot.

See, ya on the river,

Rick Estes

YesterYear's River Pictures of the Day in 2010 ..... were sent to us by Capt Gregory Moore

Bill,

I trust that this message finds you and yours doing well!

I think we have been at the same location at the same time but, I never have had the pleasure of meeting you! I look Forward to meeting you.

Attached are two pictures of us boating on Lake Michigan in Chicago. The date is on the pictures.

One picture is taken from Lake Michigan, notice the haze? Very hot and humid that day approaching Chicago. The other is of the memorial for the fire department just off of Lake Michigan in the Chicago river. The fountain sprays over the Chicago River every hour on the hour.

Both pictures are of Karen and I in the "270 Rinker Gettin By IV".

I was living in Portage IN. at the time. We enjoyed boating on Lake Michigan for the entire season. It was about 33 miles across Lake Michigan from Portage to downtown Chicago. We made the trip at least eight times that season. As well as going up the Michigan side of the Lake where we attended the Michigan City "In the Water Boat Show.

We were able to attend "The Taste of Chicago, The Chicago Blues Fest, The Chicago Water and Air Show" as well as several other events.

It was very comfortable to arrive at Chicago while the various summer activities were in progress. There were only limited routes for cars due to the events and the numbers of visitors. But, by being there by boat we moored at Monroe Harbor about one hundred feet from Lake Shore Drive! The cost, at that time, to dock was $27.00. $1.00/foot. The last time I traveled to Chicago it cost $45.00 for my car to spend the night! And we never needed to get a room!

Testing Brings Up Questions About E15........

Recently, a study of engine durability by the Coordinating Research Council found that in two of eight engines running E15 blended gasoline for 500 hours, they developed uneven valve seat wear and issues with pitting.  The National Marine Manufacturers Association and other groups oppose the sale of E15, citing that it is too easy for it to find it's way into boat and other engines not designed to safely use the fuel........

Harpeth River to Old Hickory Lake

We got a slow start on Thursday morning as we didn't intend on traveling too far yesterday. Nashville was less than 40 miles away and we decided to take a couple of days to get there, anchor somewhere close, and then go to a club we like in Nashville on Saturday night. I had some reservations, though, because the information available to us on Active Captain didn't give very good reviews about the docking in downtown Nashville. More on that later.
As we made our way upstream by 9:30, we were impressed by the beautiful homes along the Cumberland River. The land in this area downstream from Nashville is fairly flat, and the homes are raised, but not on stilts. The river is wide and anchoring along the banks would have given us some distance from barge traffic that I would have been satisfied with.
We approached Rock Harbor Marina, the home of the inflated diesel prices, by 3 P.M. The entrance is made through a very narrow channel lined with rock as it's in an old quarry. The guide book advertises a 25 foot depth in the harbor but the entrance is a bit less than 6 feet. Plenty of big boats were seen inside, so I figured access to the harbor was doable. The harbor is in a state of construction and is not the prettiest place. Noise from an adjacent sand and gravel business can be heard and probably gets tiresome after a while. I believed the harbor depth of 25 feet or more because a sail boat was sunk near the fuel dock and judging by the diameter of the mast still poking above the waterline, the hull was at least 25 feet below it.
We pulled into the fuel dock and was met with an "open" sign on the door but no one was home. I hailed the marina on the published channel of 79, as well as channel 16 and got no response. Note that the fuel dock is on the "other side" of the harbor and a drive was necessary to get over to it from the main area.
As we were only going to get a minimum amount of fuel in order to justify filling our water tank, I wasn't too worried about rousing anyone and started topping off our water. We finished the top off and my conscience told me to call the harbor on the telephone, so I did. (I blame this trait on my Catholic upbringing but am trying to overcome it.) The nice person that answered allowed as he was the only person around. I feigned some disappointment but was delighted not to have to buy even a nominal amount of diesel and told him that I thought we would be OK on fuel and could wait until our return through the area in a few days to get fuel. He expressed relief that he would not have to leave his post and even offered for us to use the pump out station if we needed it. We declined but asked about an anchorage upriver that we had seen on the chart and he said that boaters did indeed use it, so we thanked him and pulled out of the harbor.
We figured to anchor just downriver from Nashville for a day or two but I nearly passed by what I thought was the entrance to a slough just off the channel that we could plant the hook, but learned that the slough was barely wider than our boat. I wondered what boaters used this slough, according to the nice guy back at Rock Harbor. Our options were running low as we approached downtown Nashville.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

National Safe Boating Week is May 19 – May 25

The 2012 National Safe Boating Week campaign kicks off this Saturday, May 19 with Coast Guard Auxiliary units promoting recreational boating safety around nation. The campaign – which runs through May 25 -- is dedicated to helping boaters understand the need for boating education and Vessel Safety Checks, as well as the importance of wearing life jackets while boating.

“National Safe Boating Week gives us an opportunity to reflect on the safe operation of boats on the water. The incidents we study bring home the need for simple safety precautions while underway,” said Coast Guard Auxiliary National Commodore Jim Vass.

According to National Association of the Boating Law Administrators report, total fatalities in 2010 dropped to 672, the lowest number on record. The study also found that almost 75 percent of all fatal boating accident victims drowned, and of those, 88 percent were not wearing a life jacket. There were 3,153 injuries and approximately $35.5 million dollars of property damage in 2010 as a result of recreational boating mishaps. Operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed, and alcohol use rank as the top five primary contributing factors in accidents.

“We encourage everyone to wear their life jackets and use a ‘kill switch’ while boating, “ Vass said. “Frequently, we see young children in life jackets, but their parents are not wearing them. All of us need to wear a life jacket to protect ourselves and set a good example for others. I wish the boaters of America a safe boating season.”

Coast Guard Auxiliary flotillas around the country will be hosting special events to reinforce the safe boating message during NSBW, including free vessel safety checks at local marinas, boating safety classes and other special events.

Flotilla 3-13 will be sponsoring the following events over the next few weeks:

Vessel Safety Checks:

May 19 at Grafton Harbor beginning at 9:00 AM,
June 23 at My River Home Marina 11:00 AM till 2:00 PM
June 30 at Lake Center Marina 11:00 AM till 2:00 PM.

The Flotilla will also have a patrol boat and informational display at the Touch-a-Truck children’s event in Florissant on June 2 from 10:00 till 2:00 PM.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed volunteer Component of the United States Coast Guard created by an Act of Congress in 1939. The Auxiliary, supports the Coast Guard in nearly all of the service’s missions.

To learn more about boater education, Vessel Safety Checks and other services provided by the Coast Guard Auxiliary – or if you are interested in learning how to become one of us – please visit us online at www.uscgauxflotilla3-13.org or contact us at msz@charter.net.

National Maritime Day is a United States holiday created to acknowledge the maritime industry. It's on the same day, May 22, that the American steamship Savannah set sail from Savannah, Georgia on the "first ever" transoceanic voyage under steam power. Missouri River Near Bismarck, North Dakota

Unique Method Used To Repair Boat Landing........

During last year's flooding, the majority of the boat landings along the Missouri River were affected.  A year ago, the boat ramp at MacLean bottoms had around six feet of water over it.  Today, the ramp is still unusable, as portions of the parking lot are still falling into the river.  Rock rip-rap is not an option for stabilizing the land, and sheet pilings seem to be the answer.  The project will cost over a million dollars, and should be complete by the beginning of July........

Illinois Conservation Police Say "Wear It!"........

In conjunction with the North American Safe Boating Campaign's National Safe Boating Week, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police began a campaign that calls for recreational boaters to use life jackets.  Illinois state law calls for personal floatation devices to be accessible to all aboard a boat or watercraft.  Children younger than 13 must wear a lifejacket aboard vessels longer than 26 feet, unless they are below decks, or on private property........

KEWAUNEE, Wis.

A Coast Guard boatcrew from Station Two Rivers, Wis., rescued a man after the 19-foot recreational boat he was aboard struck the breakwall in Kewaunee, Wis., about 1:45 a.m. May 17, 2012.
The boater stated he left the vessel in gear as he was looking down and attempting to remove a fishing hook that became caught in his clothing, when the boat struck the breakwall.

To preserve the man's privacy, his face and his vessel's identification numbers have been digitally altered.

News Release From BoatUS

Even Man's Best Friend Needs A Life Jacket
And More Safe Boating Tips for the Other "Friends"

ANNAPOLIS, Md., May 16, 2012 – It doesn’t take National Safe Boating Week (May 19-25) to remind us that life jackets are important, even for man’s best friend. But no matter water dog or a lap dog, the life jacket has to be right-sized – so how will you know it fits? The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety has released “Foundation Findings #52,” the latest boating safety equipment product testing series now chronicled in the June/July 2012 BoatUS Magazine, “It's a Dog's Life (Jacket).”

What are two key findings? With the dog in the life jacket, first ensure that straps and buckles don’t rub sensitive parts. This is especially important when the life jacket will be worn dry, on deck. Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, but regardless, also look for foam floatation centered on the dog’s body to make swimming easy. Foundation testers also found that a lifting strap or handle is a must. For a full look at all of the Foundation Findings test results, go to www.BoatUS.com/foundation/findings.

National Safe Boating Week is also a great time to have two-legged friends aboard, but before you head out, it’s a good idea to brush up on a few safety tips. The Foundation has three fun and practical ideas:

The “DockIt!” game, which has you practice the spectator sport of boat docking, avoiding shoals and steering clear of boat traffic, is found at www.boatus.com/games. Or, put yourself at the helm of a speedboat with the Foundation’s “NavigateIt!” game, where following the rules of the road will keep you from sinking.

Going to have a youngster aboard but don’t have the right size life jacket? The Foundation’s Kids Life Jacket Loaner Program offers a range of children’s sized life jackets at over 570 locations across the country.

Don’t forget that a boat owner is also responsible for his or her guests. So while it may be common practice to allow them to drink, inebriated guests can really ruin a day when they become a safety risk or injure themselves

River History....

On May 17, 1673 in River History...

French explorers Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette began exploring the Mississippi River, which they knew by the Sioux name which means big river

On May 17, 1849 in River History...

A devastating fire destroyed a significant part of St. Louis and many of the steamboats on the St. Louis riverfront. This was the first fire in United States history in which it is known that a firefighter was killed in the line of duty.

The St. Louis Great Fire of 1849 was started on the evening of May 17, 1849 by a smoldering mattress aboard the steamboat White Cloud.  The fire quickly spread to an adjoining steamboat, the Edward Bates, which burnt free of her moorings located on what is now Laclede's Landing.  She drifted downriver, spreading fire as she went.  In a half an hours time, 23 steamboats were on fire.  The Great Fire would claim 418 buildings along 15 blocks...

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Clarksville, TN to Cheatham Lake and the Harpeth River

The courtesy dock at Clarksville lived up to it's name and was a courtesy for sure. It was quiet and we slept like logs and woke to another morning of dense fog. Our dock neighbor had already departed by the time we got up at 6:30 and we enjoyed a relaxing breakfast before Rosie attacked the bugs on the boat using the morning dew as the cleaning agent.
I took Holly for a walk along McGregor Park and she didn't miss barking at anyone and everything, but did walk proudly beside me, albeit on a very short leash.
By 9 A.M. we were ready to depart as a young girl came down to the dock and offered a hello before she sat down on the edge of the dock and started assembling her morning joint. I can only guess it was her first. I cautioned her to watch her legs as I backed away from the accumulated river debris hugging the bow of Swing Set and she gave a friendly wave goodbye. It was only her absence of several teeth that prevented me from suggesting she take a ride with us to the next port. This is a joke. The ride, not the part about the teeth.
The Cumberland in this area is very narrow, and even more so with the pool being so low. We passed the Clarksville Marina which is still under construction but looks like it will be very nice. Some workers gave a wave and gave a honk. We passed several river homes stuck to the cliffs along the way, nice views but very little river access.

This is the Clarksville Boat Club, a private marina right on the river channel. I had called them the day before and was told that they did have diesel, but their uncertainty as to when they last filled their fuel tanks gave me enough information to pass them by. I saw perhaps two vessels in the line up that may have taken diesel, so my instincts were right on to not stop for fuel at this place. No matter, we have plenty to get us to Old Hickory Lake; still running on Hoppie's fuel.
We kept hearing about the necessity for AIS on the Cumberland River due to the narrow channel and the many twists and turns when encountering towboats. We haven't seen this to be the issue if we pay attention, and the key is that we go slow. Running any faster will just enrage the many fishermen we pass, so our pace is good for not only seeing the barges ahead of time, but also to keep the natives friendly and save on fuel.

We had called the Cheatham lock one hour before we figured to arrive and was told that a southbound tow was in the chamber and would be spit out in time for us to cruise in and lock up into Cheatham Lake. We arrived one hour later on the dot and hailed the lockmaster and was disappointed to learn that there were some "difficulties" and it would be at least an hour and a half before we could lock up. We took up residence among several fishermen below the dam to wait it out and have lunch...and a nap...and play with Holly...etc. etc. until nearly three hours passed.
While we waited I called ahead for fuel availability as we will need it eventually. Twenty five miles away there is diesel and they are charging a very proud $4.99 per gallon for it. Seventy five miles away we can get it for $3.69 per gallon. Guess where we are going.
We had a couple of mishaps of our own as we raised our anchor and found it to be twisted around in spite of our swivel at the shackle, just to prevent what eventually happened. I don't like Rosie to be putting her fingers anywhere around the windlass or chain when something goes wrong, so I wound up leaving the bridge to unsnarl the anchor from the chain.
We still pulled in right behind the southbound tow as he pulled out, and grabbed a floating bollard and chatted with the lockmaster a bit. He was sorry for our wait and before we pulled away, he brought a little gift bag to us full of water safety goodies and other trinkets. The coloring book and crayons are already thrown into the trash.   We might keep the frisbee; at least until the first toss.
I had an anchorage in mind for the afternoon, but with the hold up at the lock I picked a closer spot but it turned out to be a bust. My intended mark was a place called Johnson's Creek and it advertised a depth of 13 feet off the channel. Even with a normal pool, Johnson wasn't co-operating so I made for my intended anchorage in the Harpeth River, a spot I found this morning on Active Captain.
The mouth of the Harpeth River off the Cumberland River was as narrow as the chart suggested, but it looked deep once the cut was passed and we were not disappointed. We slipped along in 30 feet of water for about a half mile before we came to a nice pool that opened up and had a lot of privacy. The river seemed to abruptly end right at the end of the pool we were in and the depth below our hull dropped to 4.5 feet so we figured we were at the end of the navigable river and dropped the hook.
The river looked to continue along some bluffs that I thought would be fun to explore, so we popped the dinghy in, grabbed Holly and a couple of Buds and took a ride.

News Release

National Safe Boating Week

WASHINGTON – The 2012 National Safe Boating Week campaign kicks off Saturday, May 19 with Coast Guard Auxiliary units promoting recreational boating safety around nation.

There were 3,153 injuries and approximately $35.5 million dollars of property damage in 2010 as a result of recreational boating.

Check your local newspaper for NSBW events near you.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed volunteer Component of the United States Coast Guard created by an Act of Congress in 1939. The Auxiliary, supports the Coast Guard in nearly all of the service’s missions

Con Trios Yacht Club Reminder....

The Con Trios Yacht Club Past Commodores Party is this Saturday, May 19th at Lake Center Marina. If you have not already sent in your reservations let Past Commodore Scott Hickey know as soon as possible. Met with Scotty this morning to help with one of his many projects for this event. Don't want to give away too much but it involves little glasses and some short water skis! He is also working hard to get the Con Trios trailer redo finished in time for the event. Sounds like he has put together a fun day for all of us.

Mississippi River Near Hannibal, Missouri

     Hannibal Commemorates Twain House Dedication........

On Tuesday, there was a large gathering in Hannibal to celebrate the centennial of the dedication of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home.  The home was slated for demolition in 1911, but wealthy resident George Mahan purchased the house, refurbished it, and on May 12, 1912, presented it to the City of Hannibal.  The house is part of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum.  The Boyhood Home underwent a full restoration in the early 90's, with the reconstruction of two rooms on the rear of the house that were removed in the 1880s........

The Missouri River Makes The Most Endangered List........

According to a conservation group, outmoded flood-control methods have earned the Missouri River a spot among the 10 most endangered U.S. waterways.  On Tuesday, American Rivers announced that the Missouri River is the fourth most endangered waterway listed in the report.  Green groups are using the report to push Congress and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to free up funding and ramp up flood protection for the Missouri River........

National Safe Boating Week Coming
    May 19 - May 25, 2012

WEAR IT!
Welcome to the 2012 North American Safe Boating Campaign! As National Safe Boating Week (May 19–25, 2012) and the season approaches, we are preparing for another campaign to spread the message of safe and responsible boating. This year, we will continue to educate the boating community about life jacket wear and the options that are available when it comes to comfortable and lightweight life jackets (Life Jacket Information). We are also working closely with our partner organizations to create a larger grassroots network and create a more consistent campaign message. We are hoping these collaborative efforts will increase awareness about the importance of always wearing life jackets while on the water.

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Lake Barkley to Clarksville, TN

We've been MIA for a few days and there is good reason. Our friends Brett and Christine Thompson, along with 'Tines parents Madge and Jerry Koerner, keep their boats at Green Turtle Bay on Lake Barkley, just a canal away from Kentucky Lake.
When we were resting after a long trip last Friday in Shedds Creek on Kentucky Lake, Brett brought a dinghy over and we caught up on gossip and then met him over at Green Turtle Bay where Madge and Brett helped us into the dock. Jerry was on his way and Christine needed to be picked up in Nashville, so we spent the evening with Madge and Jerry at the Club at Green Turtle Bay and had a blast.
On Saturday morning, Christine took Rosie to the local IGA where she stocked us back up on stuff we might not see in a while, one of the items being cabbage that Rosie thought was iceberg lettuce. It made for an interesting salad.

We also got to tour Madge and Jerry's 480 Sea Ray. It is absolutely gorgeous and Madge keeps this boat spotless.

Brett and Christine's 42 foot convertible Silverton is a beautiful boat too. The layout is very efficient and the best thing is that the previous owner opted for an additional refrigerator in the galley instead of an oven. Brett uses it for beer only. There is a reason we are friends.

When we got back to Swing Set, parked for a few hours in a slip, we threw rocks at it, our friends boats are that nice.
On Saturday afternoon we took Swing Set and followed Blonde Moment to the rock quarry on Kentucky Lake. It's the local party cove and we did the place justice, even though it was cold and rainy. Brett and Christine's friends Allan and Agada came by in their 340 Sea Ray and we were troopers and made an afternoon of it.
If that wasn't enough, we cruised back to the dock by dusk and we dropped Swing Set off, said goodbye to Holly, and jumped aboard Blonde Moment with Brett, Christine, Allan, Agada, and two more friends of theirs, Dave and Wendy, to motor up to Buzzard Rock to have dinner. I can attest to the fact that life is not complete without several orders of "Buzzard Balls", and some other dishes that are usually found on the floor somewhere, but taste like heaven.

Mississippi River Dredges

At 79 Years Old, The Dredge Jadwin Still Serving........

The four story high, 274 foot long  Dredge Jadwin was built in 1933, and she has been dredging the Mississippi River ever since.  The Jadwin is known as a dustpan dredge, and begins with a suction head which is as wide as the vessel.  The suction head is lowered to the river bottom, where sand, silt and mud are drawn up, and then pumped into a floating pipe, which deposits the sediment outside of the channel.  The vessel was named for Lt. General Edgar Jadwin, who developed the most famous plan for mamnaging the Mississippi River........

Last week, Brunswick Boat Group laid off approximately 65 employees from their plant in Flagler Beach, Florida.  The facility builds Sea Ray Boats as well as other brands.  Brunswick Corp spokesman Daniel Kubera stated that the layoffs reflect the variability of the boating industry, and that the company is adjusting production to meet demands.  Brunswick Corp's boat segment reported a 1% increase in sales during the first quarter of 2012, as well as their first profitable quarter since 2007........

YesterYear's River Pictures of the Day in 2011 .....  were sent to us by Lisa Ridenhour in August of 201o.  They got lost in RiverBills in-box and never got posted........

Hey Bill,

Here are a few pictures of my husband, Eric Ridenhour, approaching the finish line in the MR340 race last week. For those who aren’t familiar with the MR340, it’s a 340 mile kayak/canoe race which starts in Kansas City and finishes in St. Charles . The racers started at 8:00 am last Tuesday and had 88 hours to complete the race. There were 9 checkpoints along the way where the racers where disqualified if they didn’t make it by a certain time. We followed him along the way and he was so far ahead of his deadline that when he arrived in Hermann, he decided we should go out for wings and hit our favorite Tin Mill Brewery. He stayed over in Hermann on Thursday evening and was still able to finish in St. Charles about 7 hours before the Friday night midnight deadline. He did awesome! The cooler temps brought a lot of fog in the mornings, but overall the weather could not have been better.

Way to go, Eric!

See ya!

Lisa, Marina, and Jake Ridenhour

Asian Carp Update

Carp May Have Found A Backdoor Into Minnesota........

Recently, commercial fishermen caught several dozen Asian carp in Iowa's Great Lakes.  These waters are connected to lakes and streams in southwestern Minnesota.  It is believed that the carp found their way into the Iowa Great Lakes during last year's flooding along the Missouri River.  To date, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has focused their carp fighting efforts along the Mississippi River.  Now they are looking at three possible infiltration routes from Iowa........
