Fishy News From Chicago, Illinois

Swans May Be Linked To Kayaker's Drowning........

Saturday morning, a suburban Chicago kayaker drowned, and officials are saying that an aggressive swam may have contributed to the death.  The kayaker, Anthony Hensley was recovered from a pond in a condominium complex.  The Cook County Sherriff's Office believes that Hensley may have paddled a bit too close to a nesting swan as he was observing the birds.  No one witnessed the birds attack Hensley, but two swans were circling him after his fall into the water........

Missouri River Management

     Congressman Challenges Corps' Storage Calculations........

Iowa Representative Steve King is asking the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to alter their methods of calculating upstream water storage along the Missouri River.  King stated that the 2011 floods were 20% greater than a similar flood in 1881, so there should be an additional 20% storage space available upstream.  Currently, the Corps bases their storage capacity based upon the floods of 1881.  Recalculating the storage to the 2011 floods would mean lowering the levels of the upstream reservoirs........

Farmers Look For Lock And Port Improvements........

U.S. farmers are concerned that the deteriorating lock and dam system is placing the competitiveness of soybean farmers at risk.  A study put together by the Soy Transportation Coalition found that American consumers and farmers "will suffer economic distress" if there is a catastrophic failure of U.S. locks and dams.  The study also mentioned that more than half of the inland waterway structures have exceeded their 50 year usable lifespan, and more than a third surpass 70 years of age........

Bill,

One of the many pictures of Karen and I while on vacation in Puerto Vallarta Mx. Karen and I while being shuttled from a larger boat to shore. Karen was standing and I was sitting! Not a PFD to be found in or on this craft! Not sure about any of the other passengers but, Karen and I can swim!

Boat people Mexican style!

While on the boat trip we witnessed dolphins and several Whales. More pictures to come later!

We were in Nuevo Valetta for a week with our good friends and neighbors Dr. Thom and Gloria Shanahan.

Missouri River Near Leavenworth, Kansas

Rising River Brings Worries About Damaged Levees........

Between Sunday and Monday, the Missouri River at Leavenworth, Kansas rose from 6 feet to over 14 feet.  Even though the river began falling nearly as fast as it rose, officials are taking notice, as the levees protecting Leavenworth are damaged.  Both levees were breached during the 2011 floods.  The levees are on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' repair list, and they are getting ready to request repair proposals........

Fishy News From The Sea Of Cortez

Huge Shark Reeled In By Fishermen........

Sunday, two commercial fishermen from Mexico were in the Sea of Cortez, hauling in their net, when they found quite a surprise waiting for them, a nearly 20 foot long, 2,000 pound great white shark.  The shark was dead when the duo brought it to the surface.  The angler's boat was 22 feet long and powered by a 75 horsepower outboard.  The two mile trip home with the sherk in tow took two hours.  The shark is reportedly one of the longest recorded........

News Release From BoatUS

No Hassle Cruising Limits Now Come With BoatUS Insurance
Seven Insurance Tips for Cruisers

ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 18, 2012 — Often the last question that boaters ask before departing on a long cruise to the Caribbean or Mexico is: will my insurance cover me? That’s because the owner is usually focused on preparing the boat and tends to forget about the paperwork. However, most boat insurance policies require an “extension” for traveling in areas beyond home waters. And sometimes, after waiting until the last minute, a boater finds that an extension will not be granted, or if it is, requires some additional action that can delay the departure date.
BoatUS has solved the problem with a new upfront, “no-hassle” cruising limit extension for popular cruising destinations that can be set up at the beginning of a boat’s insurance policy. This one-time approval gives the boater the coverage they need, eliminates surprises and takes away the hassle of having to ask each year or pay for an extension every time they depart home waters.

“The old way was whenever a boater wanted to leave their local waters for a long summer cruise or a big race, they would have to apply to their insurance company for an extension, which was usually issued in 15-day increments and required additional premium,” said BoatUS Vice President of Marine Insurance Mike Pellerin. “This added an extra step to an already busy pre-departure checklist and many simply saw it as another hoop that you had to jump through, sometimes causing delays, for example, if the insurance company needed a rigging survey before you go. Now, with our no-hassle cruising limits you can arrange all of your cruising extensions up front when you first purchase your policy. You’ll know how much it will cost and there won’t be any surprises,” he added.

Some of the more common reasons to need a cruising extension are sailors that participate in rallies such as the Caribbean 1500 and the NARC on the East Coast to the Baha Ha-ha on the west. BoatUS says the most popular cruising areas requiring an extension are: 1.) the Caribbean, 2.) Mexico, 3.) Alaska and 4.) Nova Scotia. For a free online insurance quote or find out more about BoatUS “no-hassle” cruising extensions, go to www.BoatUS.com/insurance or call 800-283-2883.

Here are seven tips on cruising extensions:
1. A large number of “multi-line” (car/home/boat) insurance companies only offer extensions for US and Bahamian waters. If cruising outside theses regions is in your future, you’ll have better luck with marine specialty insurer.

2. In the Caribbean, November 1 is the kickoff of the cruising season, which runs through June. During hurricane season, most insurance companies will require the boat be brought back to home waters or stored on land. If you choose the latter, be prepared to answer questions about your boat’s hurricane plans, such as its location (above mean high tide), how it’s secured to ground, and who is responsible for it’s care in your absence. The Alaska and Nova Scotia cruising seasons traditionally begin May 1.

3. For offshore passages, some insurance companies require a minimum of four or five experienced crew. For boats with older owners who may have physical limitations, insurance companies also like to see a balanced crew.

4. Offering safety in numbers, rallies and regattas can be an opportune time for a novice to get a “foot in the door” on long-distance cruising. They also offer formalized safety planning and a highly organized approach that is appealing to first-time cruisers.

5. Have a safety equipment list ready when applying for a cruising extension. The basics include an EPIRB (which can be rented for $65/week from the BoatUS Foundation), electronics (SSB radio, radar), life raft, harnesses and select spare parts.

6. Some insurance companies will require a “condition and value” survey, a “rigging survey” or an “engine survey” before they will issue an extension.

7. Additionally, in Mexico, all boats are required under Mexican Law to have liability insurance issued through a Mexican Insurance Company (BoatUS can help you find this coverage through a partnership with a Mexican insurer

Big River In Jefferson County, Missouri

EPA Will Test For Lead Along Floodplain........

Concerns have been raised that lead-tainted water from the Big River has contaminated not only the fish in the area, but the soil as well.  Sampling and studies have indicated widespread lead contamination along the Big River's 100 year floodplain.  By the middle of summer, the Environmental Protection agency will start testing 256 residential properties located in Jefferson County for elevated lead levels.  The contamination is linked to long defunct lead mines dating back to the early 1800's........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Preparation Continues

Some friends have remarked that it's been a little quiet on this front lately, not only with the blog, but with Facebook too. The reason is that lots of things are coming together here as we are within three weeks of a scheduled departure.
Swing Set was launched after bottom painting eight days ago on the Monday after Easter. Two weeks of sitting in the boatyard left a fine film of dust and dirt on the boat that I rinsed off after securing Swing Set in her slip. The pollen in the air up here in Missouri is the largest contributor to a dirty boat this time of year, covered slip or not. Boats don't stay clean more than a couple of days, but the green tint doesn't stain and washes off easily. A thorough washing was planned for the upcoming weekend.
Karl Kotraba met me early the next morning armed with parts. Karl brought V-belts for the main engines and the generator. He also had impellers, wear plates, and cams for the raw water pumps on the main engines and another rebuild kit for the generator pump. The impeller puller I bought was useless because the T-handle wouldn't fit between the pump and other parts on the engine, but Karl had his own puller and offered a suggestion as to how to make my puller work in the future. While watching Karl climb in and out of tight places around our Caterpillars, it occurred to me that the chances of my actually making use of an impeller puller of any type is fairly slim. There were several vanes on all three pumps that were missing, but were searched for and found in the inlet to the heat exchangers. Those impellers were about 3 years old with only about 300 hours on them, so notes were made in my maintenance log.
I had cleaned the K-N air filters on the Walker Air-Seps before Karl arrived by soaking the filter elements in a bucket of Oxyclean, much cheaper than the filter cleaning kit that I made the mistake of buying one time. Once the elements were rinsed off and dried, a coating of air filter oil was applied and the filters were re-installed when all the other work was complete.
We had the main engine hatches open to allow for easier access to everything and I was able to learn a few things about our engines by watching Karl at work, along with his patient explanation of the things I found to question him about.
The V-belts were mostly original, over 16 years old with over 1400 hours. We have all new ones now with a set of spares. Pumps are now virtually brand new, again with spare impellers onboard. New raw water hoses were installed, cut from a large roll that Karl brought with him.
The engine zincs were all in good shape except for a couple that had broken. The broken parts were easily fished out. Checking the zincs at least monthly will be the plan, and plenty of spares will be on hand in case we aren't near a good supplier. Access to the zincs is very good, so this won't be a chore.
I was left own my own the next day where I set to work rearranging some components in the engine room. I pulled out the accumulator tank (a pressure tank for the fresh water system), a box that holds two five gallon containers for oil changes, and both fresh water pumps. I had replaced one of the fresh water pumps about two years ago, and it was in fine shape once I cleaned out the strainer on the inlet of the pump. The other pump was original and was toast.
I ordered another pump so that both were the same; this allows for a better fit for the installation and also the circuit breakers will also be the same.
With these items pulled out, I was able to access the trim tab pump and oil reservoir and top it off with a few ounces of ATF, something I've only had to do once in eight years. Trim tabs don't get much use when the majority of the time we're running at displacement speeds.
I had built a bracket for the accumulator tank last year, but it was too tall for where I now wanted to put it. I modified the bracket and installed it back towards the hull sides, but left room to still access the trim tab reservoir when needed. I constructed a mounting board to place the fresh water pumps closer to the middle of the engine room so I could access them and clean the inlet strainers on a regular basis. To make room to move the pumps, I made brackets to place over the engine shaft seals, still with enough room to easily see the dripless shaft seals, but very easily removable to install new seals if needed. One of these brackets hold those two five gallon containers, and the other one holds engine oil and coolant to use during regular checks in the engine room.
This work took place over the course of two days, allowing time for me to contemplate and plan, the result being a hopefully well thought out placement of components that require regular attention.
I spent a full day or two at home, during which I finalized our "move" to Florida, filling out forms for Florida residency and activating our mail forwarding account with St. Brendan's Isle. I also contacted a State Farm agent in Green Cove Springs and bought a non-owner auto policy that will cover our liability when we rent or borrow a vehicle. As of May 1st, we'll be "car less" for the first time in over 41 years for me.
This time at home included some much needed couch time for me and Holly, as she had been neglected for longer than she is used to since we brought her home in December. My aching back needed some R and R too.
We were back to the boat on Friday night, loaded with plumbing parts to hook up the fresh water pumps and to plumb the water maker. I had previous used J-B Weld to attach some fittings to a drain and supply for the water maker and had good solid mounts for the water lines when I attacked that project early on Saturday morning. This project was not technically hard, but access to areas that I had to get to in order to route hose wasn't easy. I found good use of a pair of those "grabber" devices that they sell for older folks to reach things off the top shelf at the grocery store. Things dropped in the remote corners of the bilge are no longer given up to the bilge gods with one of these devices on hand.
My hose routing was interrupted by other chores too. I started the day by removing each set of Racor fuel filters so that I could trim down the mounting boards for them. This allowed easier access to areas behind each board; the hot water heater is behind one, and a battery bank and holding tank is behind another. I continued to run hose to the water maker as each coat of paint dried on the Racor mounting boards where I had hacked them off with the jigsaw. In between all this, I had to make a run to the auto parts store for a fuel line fitting that I needed. Make that three auto parts stores. It wasn't until I was at Advanced Auto that I was told that it would be doubtful that any auto parts store would have what I needed, but would easily be found at the hardware store. I was going there anyway, so I got the part cheaper, but the whole process took two hours out of my day.
I finished up for the day as darkness fell on Saturday evening. With no water onboard with the pumps not presently installed, I made use of the showers at the Duck Club as Rosie made a couple of the best steaks I ever ate in our convection oven on Swing Set. It was fairly quiet on the dock that evening, as our dock mates partied it up pretty good the night before, but we relaxed after dinner with a couple of beers and turned in early and enjoyed a quiet nights sleep at the dock instead of our preferred choice of on the hook.
I finished up what I could in the engine room on Sunday morning and by mid-morning it was time for a break. Rosie volunteered to give Swing Set a good bath and I was glad to comply and make myself scarce. Before I left, I pulled out the cockpit seat and scrubbed the cockpit floor with Soft Scrub, then I grabbed a beer and went to visit with some other Duck Club members.
As Rosie finished up and we thought we might go for a spin, rain moved in and we gathered around the dock with several dock mates and various passers by. The next best thing besides boating is sitting around talking about boating, and Sunday afternoon was spent doing plenty of that and telling other lies. As the afternoon wore on, a bunch of us decided to descend upon the Duck Club to catch the end of the Cardinal game and have dinner. A big old bacon cheeseburger along with tater tots from the Duck Club goes a long way to soak up a few Bud Lights. We treated ourselves in this manner after a couple of very productive days working on the boat and turned in fairly early so Rosie could start her last week of work, and then we'll move onto the boat full time by the end of this week.
I have to finish up plumbing the fresh water pumps this week and then we start moving the last of our clothing and computer equipment onto the boat. We'll stop by the condo for the last time next week before we leave it in the hands of a new real estate agent that we are employing, before we get on our way to our lawyers office for some last minute legal matters and a doctor's visit for Rosie.
We're confident that the burden of not having a vehicle anymore will be more than offset by the regular tranquility of life on the hook. I may find myself forgetting how to drive; Rosie says I already have.

At Jerry P. Combs Lake on the Little River Conservation Area near Kennett, Missouri, conservation officials are seeing improvements in fish reproduction.  Salvador Mondragon, Missouri Department of Conservation Fisheries Management Biologist stated that the approximately 9,000 largemouth bass stocked in the fall of 2011 have begun to reproduce naturally.  The MDC discontinued stocking catfish at the lake, as they are naturally reproducing as well........

    Houseboat Sinks At The Lake........

Saturday, a 47 foot houseboat sank while tied off to a dock at the Hi-Way Cove Marina close to the Hurricane Deck Bridge.  Responders arrived on the scene to find the houseboat's stern resting on the bottom, in about eight feet of water, and the bow pointed skyward.  The bow was supported by underwater bracing in the slip.  Several hours were spent by Atlantis Dive and TowBoatU.S. crews on Sunday raising the vessel....  during a tornado watch....

427.9 Pound Yellow Fin Tuna Caught in Mexico

A 427.9-pound yellow fin tuna was caught on a rod and reel on Sunday off of the coast of the Mexican resort town of Puerto Vallarta.   It weighed in at 427.9 pounds on a  certified scale, making it the heaviest known yellow fin to have been caught on rod and reel.

But there is a problem with this trophy fish.....A crewman on the boat touched the rod while Robert Pedigo was bringing in the fish.  That makes it an "assisted catch" and disqualifies it as International Game Fish Assn. world record.

The fish was caught on a 130 pound test line and it took them 30 minutes to bring it in.

Illinois River Near Peoria, Illinois

   Work Continues On Island Construction........

Over the winter, work never really tapered off on the construction of a new island in the Lower Peoria Lake along the Illinois River.  Work was shut down for several weeks on account of mechanical problems, but the mild winter allowed work to continue for the better part of the season.  The island is one of three islands planned for the Peoria Lakes. The island was slated to be completed this year, but flooding and delays pushed the finish date to 2013.  However, is the weather remains mild and the river doesn't rise, construction should be back on schedule........

Coast Guard Eagle arrives for bicentennial of War of 1812 events

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, America’s Tall Ship, is scheduled to arrive at the Bienville Wharf, Tuesday, at 2 p.m., as part of their 2012 cruise celebrating Operation Sail 2012 and the bicentennial of the War of 1812.

The Eagle will be open for free public tours Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

At 295 feet in length, the Eagle is the largest tall ship flying the stars and stripes and the only active square rigger in U.S. government service.

Constructed in 1936 by the Blohm and Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, and originally commissioned as the Horst Wessel by the German Navy, the Eagle was taken by the United States as a war reparation following World War II.

With more than 23,500 square feet of sail and six miles of rigging, the Eagle has served as a floating classroom to future Coast Guard officers since 1946, offering an at-sea leadership and professional development experience.

A permanent crew of seven officers and 50 enlisted personnel maintain the ship and guide the trainees through an underway and in-port training schedule, dedicated to learning the skills of navigation, damage control, watchstanding, engineering and deck seamanship.

To follow the Eagle’s summer cruise, visit the ship’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CoastGuardCutterEagle.

Hi Bill,

Here are a few shots I took last Sunday, March 18, of the Alton Motorboat club's party on the sandbar at the mouth of Piasa Creek. The Jon Boat Jubalee.

Good times, good food, good people. The party ended up as a float down Piasa Creek. What a beautiful day. It was the first outing for a lot of us.

Bill,

I moved south at the 1st of the year for new job, but I still check your site to see what's happening in the Alton pool. Made it home for Easter and returned to Mobile with my sea doo and youngest daughter. We got out on the Dog River and took a ride out into the bay. Then enjoyed some great crab claws at the Mariner before heading in. The water is already 78 degrees down here.

A shout out to all the AY members who look at your site.

Bill:

Probably one of the best places (outside of church) I've been for a wedding was at The Vineyard at The Riverbend Chapel. It is located about 5-miles east of Washington, Mo., on old Route 100.

It was an outdoor wedding service. The bride, groom, and minister stood under a trellis with the Missouri River as backdrop.

River History....

April 15, 1927 in River History

The flood of 1927 actually started with heavy rainfall in the central basin of the Mississippi River in the summer of 1926.

By September of 1926 the Mississippi River's tributaries in Kansas and Iowa were already filled to capacity. On New Year's Day in 1927, the Cumberland River topped the levees at Nashville, Tennessee. Fifteen inches of rain fell in an eighteen hour time period causing flooding which overtook the levees. The Mississippi River broke out of its levee system in 145 places and flooded 27,000 square miles. This flood waters engulfed an area of more 50 miles wide and a 100 miles long and in some places the water measured 30 feet deep.

The flood caused over $400 million in damages and killed 246 people in seven states that border the Mississippi River......... Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

The state of Arkansas was hit the hardest by the flood......14% of the state was covered by floodwaters. In May of 1927 the Mississippi River measured 60 miles wide below Memphis, Tennessee.

News Release From BoatUS

Does this bring back any memories? New BoatUS video premieres

Dear Friends:

It’s Friday, a great day to premiere our latest short one-minute video, “So You Think You Don’t Need Towing?”

Take a peek at: www.BoatUS.com/soyouthinkyoudontneedtowing.

For some of us - like me - watching this video could be a trip down memory lane. Back in 2006, with my wife, three-year-old son and good friends aboard for the inaugural cruise of the season, my boat broke down. I remember the look on my wife’s face, and how it drastically changed when our local TowBoatUS tower showed up. We were able to salvage the rest of the day, and I’m still happily married*.

Please feel free to send any comments to me at: SCroft@BoatUS.com. For more information about BoatUS Towing Services, go to: www.BoatUS.com/towing.

Stay safe and wishing you won’t ever have to call for a tow – but we are here if you need us.

Scott Croft
BoatUS Public Relations

*Legal Disclaimer: The purchase of on-the-water towing services from BoatUS does not imply or guarantee a happy marriage. However, anecdotal information indicates that four out of five boating, fishing, or sailing families that have an on-the-water towing services plan from BoatUS show a marked improvement in their boating lifestyle. Have a great weekend.
