Boating Season Gets Underway

Everyone who boats thinks that where they choose to partake in their favorite activity is the best place on the planet to do so. I believe that's true, in that they're all good. If you have read any of the older posts on this blog, you'll see that we've been able to scrape up a few grins just about wherever we've found a place to throw out the hook.
The above picture is from the 4th of July a few years ago and is just an example of how it's done on the Alton Pool of the Mississippi. If you've done any traveling on the Mississippi, you'll find a distinct change in boating activity as you arrive in this area between locks 25 and 26 on the Big Muddy, basically where the Illinois River ends at Grafton.
I would never lay claim that this area is the best place to boat though. We've had lots of fun on  a smaller river, the Meramec, which is a tributary to the Mississippi and ends its run just up from Hoppie's Marina in Kimmswick, MO. You Loopers know that stop for sure. The Lake of the Ozarks is a favorite boating destination in this part of the country and boaters come from all the adjoining States to partake in some heavy duty partying, and we've done our stints there as well but eventually tired of the weekly drive.
The folks up in Peoria do a pretty good job too on the Illinois River. There's a nice beach area and the downtown Peoria waterfront is one that other towns would do well to emulate.
From our experience, Put-In-Bay on Lake Erie may get the award for the best boaters party area around...from what I can remember.
Our theory is that the closer you get to "big water", the boaters that congregate and hold the best parties are more spread out and therefore do not get the large raft ups and gatherings that the smaller places do. We intend to bust this theory wide open as we travel around the inland rivers and coastal areas of the U.S.
Holding to our theory, Kentucky Lake has a loyal raftup population we are told. Some friends of ours that boat down there have posted some pictures and I believe those people down there know how to do it, dry county or not. We intend to be there before Memorial Day. They have been warned.
Our friends that snowbird on the western coast of Florida near Cape Coral report a more spread out boating population and the large raft up parties that we are accustomed to are harder to find. This has become a mission for us when we get down there and we intend to not only find the party area, but also start one if we have to.
Years ago when we took our little 24 foot Formula to Key West, we found some promise, but again on a smaller scale, and I don't mean on the streets but out on the hook. Can't wait to see what's changed down there.
Admittedly, the younger people may have an edge in finding the boating parties. I don't think anyone can deny the attraction of just a couple of beautiful women in skimpy bikini's as party starting bait, but it's normally the older gang that provide the best party platforms as they generally have the bigger boats. Have you ever seen a stripper pole mounted on a bass boat? Ya got subwoofers on that Sea Doo? I didn't think so.
We like a party and we know that as good as it is up here on the Alton Pool, we don't have the market cornered in the party department, and we also don't lose sight of the fact that a good party can be had with just a couple of boats and like minded folks. Reading this, a person can get the idea that to us, boating is largely a social activity, and they would not be wrong.
It can't be too hard to see why we are so anxious to get on our way before complete senility sets in. It turns out that our delay from departing last fall has been for good reason, but as the obstacles fall away, the greater our enthusiasm grows in our aim to cast off.
For Swing Set's part, she's getting a beauty treatment at the boatyard and won't dip her bottom back into the Mississippi again until next week some time. Then, we have some minor work to do in the engine room before we can get out on the hook and inflict ourselves on others for just a few more weekends up here on the Alton Pool.

Boating Safety

Water Patrol Offers Spring Boating Tips........

Mild weather means boating season is starting early, and the Missouri State Water Patrol is urging the importance of boating safety, as well as the use of life jackets.  In the U.S., about 700 people die each year in boating related accidents.  The Water Patrol believes that safe boating practices would reduce boating deaths significantly.  Safe boating includes following the "rules of the road", observing safe and prudent speeds, and using nav lights between sunset and sunrise........

Boat Sales News

Sales Tax Fight Won By Missouri Boater........

Recently, the Missouri Supreme Court sided with a Missouri boater that purchased a boat in Maryland, and disputed paying local sales tax on a boat purchased out of state.  When attorney Craig Street purchased a boat over the internet, he was charged $191.19 in sales tax for the boat, outboard motor and trailer.  Street challenged the Missouri Director of Revenue in the Missouri State Supreme Court and won his refund.  He has yet to receive his refund........

BAY MILLS, Mich. — Spill response personnel of the Bay Mills Indian Community deploy boom March 29, 2012, to contain diesel fuel released by the H.W. Hocks, a tribal fishing vessel that sunk in Waiska Bay.

Last year, the U.S. Coast Guard provided training to people from BMIC, as well as other Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority members, in order to enhance their readiness to respond to environmental accidents such as this.

U.S. Coast Guard photo by Andy Nadolny

BAY MILLS, Mich. — Clean up operations are underway Thursday evening, as members of Coast Guard Sector Sault Sainte Marie, Mich., and the Bay Mills Indian Community work together to ensure the containment and clean up of about 100 gallons of diesel fuel from the fishing vessel H.W. Hocks, which sank in Waiska Bay.

Wednesday, at about 6:30 p.m., the Bay Mills Tribal fishing vessel H.W. Hocks was reported sunk and the cause of a discharge of diesel fuel into the water.

Pollution investigators from Sector Sault Sainte Marie arrived on scene early Thursday morning along with Bay Mills Indian Community response personnel and equipment. BMIC personnel were able to expeditiously deploy boom and other oil spill response equipment to contain the spill.

The Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority, an organization established by BMIC and four other tribes, provided BMIC with spill response equipment that was obtained through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency.

In September, CORA’s environment and conservation staff arranged a spill response training session with Coast Guard personnel aimed at enhancing the readiness of response equipment for a situation of this type.

"This collaborative response demonstrates our shared commitment to protecting the waters of the Great Lakes, a precious resource," said Lt. j.g. Adam Saurin, Sector Sault Sainte Marie public affairs officer.

"Environmental stewardship cannot be one agency's job — it's truly a team effort."

The cause of the H.W. Hocks' sinking is currently under investigation and is unknown at this time. The Coast Guard advises that people remain clear of the salvage area until cleanup and salvage operations have concluded.

Coast Guard and BMIC personnel will continue to work together to mitigate the effects of the spill.

For more information, contact Lt. j.g. Adam Saurin, at 906-635-3277.

Bill:

Just returned from a trip to Tellico Lake in Tennessee and St. James City, Florida (on Pine Island).

I solved the dilemma of what to wear by sporting the always popular Riverbills.com Pirate T-shirt.

Here are pics of the T-Shirt at Calhoun's Restaurant in Lenoir City on the Tennessee River at Fort Loudon Marina. I didn't look happy but can't imagine why!

The Riverbills Pirate shirt (apparently, the most-used piece of clothing in my suitcase) also appears in front of Woody's Waterside Restaurant in St. James City. (The replica of the Key West Buoy says: "Drunkenmost Point in the Continental USA".

My son, Rich, owns a restaurant in St. James City called the Island Cow. Only place you can get breakfast there. That's Rich and me in front of his restaurant.

Heard about all the snow St. Louis received while I was gone. Tried to feel badly. Couldn't. We were out boating on Pine Island Sound in 80 degree weather!

However, I did my best to spread the "gospel" of Riverbills.com

Mississippi River At East St. Louis, Illinois

Worker Falls Into River, Search Called Off........

Wednesday morning, a worker on the New Mississippi River Bridge Project fell into the river.  The worker was harnessed in a "man-lift", a four wheeled piece of equipment, when it tumbled into the water, near the Illinois bank.  Responders from the U.S. Coast Guard, the St. Louis and Swansea Fire Departments searched the river for several hours, prior to halting the search close to 4 pm, citing that the current was too swift to reach the bottom.  A life jacket has been recovered........

Missing Worker Identified........

Wednesday evening, East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore tentatively identified the missing worker as Andy Gammon.  Gammon is a carpenter working for bridge prime contractor, a joint venture of Massman, Traylor Bros, and Alberici.  Gammon was on a man lift aboard a barge 150 feet upriver from a tower, when the lift tumbled into the water.  To date, this is the first major incident after nearly two years of construction........

Three Watercraft Rescued From Missouri River........

Within an hour and a half's time on Saturday afternoon, Washington volunteer firefighters were called out to the Missouri River to rescue three vessel.  The first call was for a jet ski that had broken down, stranding it's rider.  Meanwhile, people at a boat launch put their boat into the water, only to have the motor start smoking and die, leaving the vessel adrift.  The third vessel also developed engine troubles.  It was a Boles Fire Protection District rescue boat which was backing up the Washington boat.  There were no injuries, and all of the vessels were recovered.........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

No Time Like the Present

We are still asked all the time, "When are you leaving?" I can only name one person that we know is only interested because they actually want to see us gone, but the rest are just curious. I think. Many of you following this blog since it was started last December know that we've been planning this for a couple of years and we are now getting close.
Our big obstacle currently is the delay of the sale of our condo. When I say "delay", what I really mean is that we flat out cannot sell it. The real estate market has not co-operated with our plans, but when does everything go as smoothly as you want it to? We keep lowering our price, and are still considering leasing it out, but we still have a few weeks to make a final decision. Hope remains eternal that we'll get something going soon.
The other big item is that the cost of fuel is going up in a big way, but that is not keeping us here. Fuel prices always go up, but now it's got us paying some attention. A friend asked the other day what we were going to do about the high fuel prices. I said "Pay 'em". What else can we do? The way we figure it, we intend to spend most of our time "on the hook", or at anchor. (Notice how the blog address reflects this?) We'll just take longer intervals between travel time. As we've stated, we'll have no schedule, so getting somewhere by a certain time won't be an issue. A simple way to explain this is that if we had decided to travel 60 miles per day and changed our plan to travel 30 miles per day, or 60 miles every other day, we've just halved our fuel cost outlay. If it gets to the point where we can only afford to travel 60 miles every three months, we'll take the engines out and get a mooring ball in Key West. Just kidding.
I got a call yesterday from Jeff Miller, the new service manager at Bloch Marine at Polestar Harbor. They were starting to sand the bottom of Swing Set and wanted to remove the dinghy and get it out of the way to avoid getting dust debris on it. That was a considerate, but expected call, and since the dinghy was going on a trailer we decided to have some minor engine work done on the Mercury outboard, so a good move all around.
As far as the leaving part, our friends are making us feel like we will be missed, and it's actually making our decision to take off harder to do. But we'll find a way to overcome our grief about missing our friends, along with this downturn in housing costs and the uptick in fuel prices. We have a few weeks to go, I just hope by the time our departure date arrives, we aren't chased out of town like those townspeople did to Frankenstein's Monster way back when.
Just a short blog today. I've added some neat features to the blog and wanted our friends to see them. Let me know how the "follow by email" feature works.

News Release From BoatUS

A Shotgun Marriage? Ethanol and Old Outboard Boat Engines

ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 28, 2012 -- Ever since E10 gasoline (gas containing 10% ethanol) became widely available several years ago, the nation’s largest recreational boat owners group, BoatUS, has received hundreds of calls and emails complaining about boat engine problems. The majority of complaints concern older outboard motors, those made before about 1990. BoatUS’ Seaworthy magazine asked Mercury Marine's Ed Alyanak and Frank Kelley, who between them have over 60 years of experience, to find out what’s made these decades-old outboards more susceptible to ethanol’s well-known problems and what owners can do.

1. Vulnerable hoses: In the mid 1980’s new standards (SAE J1527) for fuel hoses were developed for “gasohol,” which was known to deteriorate rubber and plastics. Since then, problems with hoses have largely gone away, but that doesn’t mean they are maintenance free. Tech Tip: Any hose older than 10 years should be replaced. Here’s another way to test rubber fuel hose condition: wipe a clean rag along the hose. If you smell gas on the rag, replace the hose immediately.
2. Carburetors: O-rings and rubber carburetor parts on older engines tend to get hard and brittle when exposed to ethanol and then break off in bits and pieces causing clogs, misfires and shutdowns. Pre-1990 carburetors were also made from alloys that didn’t stand up to ethanol, leading to corrosion that can cause tiny fuel orifices to clog, resulting in hard starts and poor running. Old carbs are also “dumb” in that they were designed to run on only one type of fuel. Ethanol, however, has more oxygen and affects the air/fuel ratio, causing engines to run leaner and hotter. Tech Tip: The best solution with old outboards is to run straight gas – if you can find it. Some mechanics may also have the ability to “recalibrate” a carburetor to tolerate E10 (note: gas with ethanol greater than 10% should never be used with any boat engine).
3. Plastic fuel filter bowl: Some older engines may have plastic fuel filter bowls. Tech Tip: If you still have one, replace immediately with a metal bowl.
4. Fuel fill gasket: Keeping water out of the fuel tank is even more important with ethanol as it can eventually lead to the formation of two separate solutions in the gas tank (water and fuel), also known as phase separation. The process is more common on older boats which are more likely to have accumulated water at the bottom of the tank. Once phase separation happens – the tipping point when water in the gas is either harmlessly ingested or transformed into a corrosive mixture no engine will run on – there’s no going back. No fuel additive can restore E10 back to its normal state. Tech Tip: Age and exposure to ethanol can rot fill gaskets or O-rings. Replace them every few years.
5. “Gunk” in the tank: It is still possible that some old outboards and boat fuel systems have yet to sip a drop of E10. But once your boat drinks its first tankful, ethanol will “scour” or dissolve the gunk that’s been coating the tank walls (and hoses) for years. Tech tip: You may want to think about hiring a professional to have the tank drained completely of any gas and water at the bottom before adding your first load of E10. If not, keep a supply of filters on hand – they will clog quickly. Always use a fuel stabilizer and avoid using octane boosters that contain ethanol.
For more information on ethanol and boat engines, go to http://www.boatus.com/seaworthy/ethanol.asp

The Pictures of the Day....... were sent to us by Capt'n Rich Estes who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the boat........Y2Katy

Hi Bill,

We went out for a cruise Sunday. Didn't see a lot of boats (or aircraft), so if you need to fill some space here are some boring pictures. We had a leisurely lunch at Kinder's, That's Mary, Tammy and Chris enjoying the sunshine, a cold beverage and the view from the deck.

That's me waving the hat I won at RiverBills Eagle watching party (the sun was in Mary's eyes, she wanted a hat). Kinder's had a good crowd, a lot of bikers coming over on the ferry and a couple of boats other than the Y2Katy.

After lunch we anchored for awhile near Two Branch, then on the way back, cruised past North Shore and the Boathouse. It looks like they had a good crowd, too.

See ya on the river!
Rick, Mary & Katy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

US Coast Guard Auxiliary Safe Boating Class

Boater Education Saves Lives

Missouri’s Mandatory Boater Education Law requires that every Missouri resident born after January 1, 1984 who operates a vessel on Missouri lakes must carry a boating safety identification card issued by the State Water Patrol and a valid photo ID. This includes personal watercraft like Jet-Skis. The Boating Safety ID Card indicates successful completion of a boating safety education course. Illinois and many other states have similar requirements.

Flotilla 3-13 of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering the “About Boating Safety” course at Grafton Harbor this spring. The course runs on 2 consecutive Saturdays from 9:00 AM till 1:00 PM. The next class begins April 28, and concludes on May 5.

Successful completion of this course will not only earn the Boating Safety ID Card, but will also give you invaluable information which will help you to remain safe on the water. Whether you are required by law to take the course or not, Boating Safety Education will help you be a better, safer boater. Insurers recognize this and most offer a discount on your insurance for completing the course.

Course Preregistration is necessary. Sign up or for more information by dropping by the harbor, or calling Jan at 618-786-7678 or by contacting Mark via e-mail msz@charter.net or cell phone number 314-803-7044.

Mild weather and favorable conditions along the Missouri River have allowed cargo barges to start moving clay and fertilizer a month early.  However, the Port of St. Joseph has been idle, due to necessary upgrades.  Currently, a truck scale is in the process of being installed, but more equipment, such as an excavator, will be necessary to lure more barges into the port.  Lack of equipment has been an issue in the past........

Last year, a 50 foot fishing vessel was among the 5 million tons of debris that was swept from Japan when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck Japan.  Recently, an airplane contacted authorities to report the sighting of the vessel about 160 miles off of the Canadian coast, and drifting slowly to shore.  The vessel originated from Hokkaido, Japan.  A maritime warning has been issued because of potential navigational hazards.........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Holly and Swing Set Both Get Some Attention

Boating season is under way on the Alton Pool of the Mississippi. The water is on at the docks at the Duck Club Yacht Club where Swing Set is berthed, so boat owners were out over the weekend and the winter dirt and spring pollen was being spritzed off of a lot of boats on Saturday.
Swing Set got a bath on Wednesday of last week, so Rosie and I were able to address some other chores on Saturday that we'd been putting off until the weather broke. But first, I need to back up to Friday. I picked up Rosie from work on Friday evening and we got to the boat around 6 P.M. after a pit stop at the IGA. Holly sat on Rosie's lap and barked at customers while I did a drive by shopping stint for enough food to get us through the weekend.
After bringing another carload of stuff aboard, I asked Rosie how she liked the job I did installing some hanging shelves in the main cedar locker in the master stateroom. "I don't like it." was the short response I received. I re-evaluated the installation and realized that Rosie was right. I had hung the shelves in the widest side of the locker which left no room to hang stuff on the other side. I got my screw gun out, and while dinner was warming up, I made the switch and we were all happy. I admitted that I didn't know what I was thinking at the time, except my mind has been on bigger fish.
After a dinner of beef stew over egg noodles, we did a few more chores and then we watched our first movie on the boat using our Roku box, streaming movies via the WiFi at the Duck Club. Nifty. We'll be able to view free movies wherever we find a WiFi hotspot, and we'll change our Netflix account from DVD rental to the instant movie program for about $8 per month.
We got to bed early and slept like logs until the late hour of 8 A.M. That's late for us without the help of our friend Bud Light. Rosie got the coffee going and thus started a filling breakfast while I tended to the job of giving Holly some early morning attention. Before I get too carried away, I have to show you this picture of Holly in her "stateroom". Our friends on facebook have seen this picture already, but some of my blog readers haven't.

Being part terrier, Holly has discovered the joys of burrowing and gets thus engaged at any opportunity. Those two pinpoints of light are her eyeballs peering out from under her bed.
I took this picture a week ago and was showing it to everyone and was charged with being obsessed with the dog. Yep, guilty.
Once my scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, bagel, and two cups of coffee were stowed away safely in my innards, I set to work on my mission for the day which was to install our water maker. The components of our Katadyn water maker have been setting patiently on the floor of the salon since December and it was time to get them put where they belonged.
Earlier in the week, I had been going over my installation plans mentally and I had a clear vision of how I wanted things to progress and I only encountered one misstep. My setback was minor once I became aware of the beauty of drilling proper pilot holes and it was smoooooth sailing all the way after that.

I did a vertical mount which is acceptable if the pump and the motor are side by side. On the far right is the pre-filter and the membrane is the long white cylinder. Most, but not all, of the plumbing is completed and the wiring is not done yet, but the unit is out of the salon and I'll finish the work shortly. The white board is plastic fence board and it's screwed and glued. The pump is thru bolted for a solid installation. I still have room in this compartment for our shore power cords and a water hose. It will make 3 gallons per hour at 8 amps, which shouldn't be too much of a drain on our battery bank, especially if I make water while underway. (Only clear ocean water is an acceptable source, other wise the pre-filter and membrane gets clogged up in a hurry.)
By 2 P.M. I had my mess cleaned up and our dock mates began to show up. Six of us were hiring a cab to take us to the wedding of a fellow Duck Club member and as far as I know, we all had a blast. When the cab dropped us off back at the harbor, the words to "Red Solo Cup" were ringing in our ears, courtesy of yours truly. I apologized for the singing the next day. I will not apologize to everyone I kissed the night before, including the men, some reluctant, some not so much so.
Things were a little fuzzy on Sunday morning and we got a late start on what promised to be another pretty day on the Mississippi. Relishing in my success on Saturday regarding my water maker installation, I decided to treat ourselves with a boat ride, it being the first for Holly, but the first item on the agenda was another lumberjack breakfast to help dust off the cobwebs.
We had no itinerary as we left the harbor but headed upriver where we knew we might be able to see some friends if they decided to take advantage of the gorgeous weather.
As Rosie and I looked on like expectant parents to see Holly's reaction to the boat ride, she largely ignored the scenery and occupied herself in her normal activity of licking and gnawing whatever is in her path. As we neared one of our regular anchorages, we were delighted to find some friends already at anchor and catching rays. We wound up with seven boats rafted up and several just stopping by to say "Hi". Holly got plenty of attention from everyone and was well behaved. She even stayed quiet for a spell when I left her in her "room" to do her duty and give us a little rest.
Everyone started breaking up around the normal time of 5-5:30 and we enjoyed a slow ride back the harbor and made it home back to St. Louis just as the sun set.
It was back up to the river for me this morning to take Swing Set over to Bloch Marine for bottom paint.

The crew was right on time to haul out Swing Set and I met the new service manager and we discussed the plan and made sure we were on the same page. It's never too unusual to find a surprise or two when hauling the boat, but I'm happy to report that everything looked good initially. Props were flawless and everything was where it was supposed to be. The first order of business is the get her power washed and checked for blisters. Last time Swing Set got bottom paint, no blisters were found and we're hoping for the same result this time.
Once we get an idea when the work will be complete, I'll contact the surveyor to come take a look so we can have a fresh survey for insurance purposes.
All in all, a pretty good weekend. We got some things accomplished and had a few grins to boot. All we need now is a contract on our condo and we'll be beside ourselves with joy.

Within the next two weeks, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will looking for three firms to finish the restoration work on the Birds Point Levee.  Last May, the Corps detonated three sections of the levee to relieve water pressure on the levees at Cairo, Illinois.  Back in December, the Corps spent $20 million rebuilding the levee back up to 55 feet at each of the blast points.  The private firms are being brought in due to the amount of projects the Corps has to complete........

Friday, officials from the National Weather Service reported that the risks for flooding along the Missouri River Basin this spring is primarily at normal levels.  The only exception is in the Dakotas, where there is a lower than normal risk for flooding expected  Normal risk for flooding means that areas that typically flood year to year will likely flood, but areas that do not usually flood are unlikely to experience flooding this year........

Around And Around She Goes
By Chris Landers

Our oceans' natural currents corral almost everything that floats into the center of "gyres" in which reside an expansive soup of spiraling plastic particles and other debris.

You may have heard or read about an area in the North Pacific where large marine debris fields of trash congregate, forming a vast mass of floating plastic garbage. While there are a lot of misconceptions about the so-called Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the phenomenon is real..... Click here to continue reading in Boat US Magazine

Comments Requested For Prop Strike Report........

Recently, CED Investigative Technologies Inc. compiled a draft report for the U.S. Coast Guard and the American Boat and Yacht Council titled "Human Factors Analysis of Propeller Strikes".  The report states that there is no method to effectively alleviate the chances of injury from accidental contact with a boat's propeller.  Prop guards have been shown effective in certain installations.  Comments will be accepted until April 11........

From the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

DID YOU KNOW...

MYTH: You do not need to wear a life jacket while boating if you are a good swimmer.

FACT: It takes an adult about 60 seconds to drown. A life jacket can't save your life unless you wear it, and holding onto a life jacket can only save you if you are conscious. It is estimated that 90% of boating accident victims may have lived if they had been wearing a life jacket. The adult-type inflatable life jackets make wearing the gear more comfortable than ever before and they come in suspender and belt-pack styles. Make sure each of your loved ones always wears a life jacket.

Boating And Fishing Legislation

Senate Bill Includes Boating, Fishing Trust Fund........

The U.S. Senate recently passed the highway bill, which includes the reauthorization of the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund.  Now, the House of Representatives is attempting to get their version of the highway bill onto the floor, but that is not likely to happen until after the presidential election.  However, last Monday, President Obama called on the House to pass the Senate's bill quickly, stating that the economy depends upon world class infrastructure........

Heritage Days At LCCC Has Been Discontinued........

It turns out that last fall's 32nd annual "Heritage Days on the Goshen Trail" was the last one.  The re-enactment was held at the Lewis and Clark Community College and depicted the era of 1700 - 1840.  Many factors played a part in the decision to discontinue Heritage Days, but the costs of presenting the event is the main cause.  Event organizers will be liquidating the remaining property........

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers emphasize Metro East Levees are top priority to congressional delegation

ST. LOUIS– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi Valley Division Command Maj. Gen. John W. Peabody and St. Louis District Commander Col. Chris Hall told Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Representative Jerry Costello (D-IL) that the Metro East Levee System is their top priority for the St. Louis District during a meeting on Capitol Hill today.

Members from Senator Mark Kirk (D-IL) and Representative John Shimkus’ (R-IL) staff were also present in the meeting.

"Today the Corps emphasized our firm commitment to meet our duty to ensure that the flood risk management structures in the Metro East area will function as designed to protect the 260,000 people who depend on the levees for their safety,” Peabody said.

The Metro East Levee System consists of five levee projects located in Madison, St. Clair and Monroe Counties in Illinois. The System reduces flood risk to approximately 260,000 resident and $4.6 Billion in industrial, commercial, and residential property.

“The safety of the residents living and working behind the Metro East Levee System is our top priority,” Hall said..... click here to continue reading this news release

Riverbill,

Yesterday at Lake Center there were probably a hundred pelicans in the marina, and I didn’t have a camera of course. I went back today with a camera and there were probably only a couple of dozen, and they wanted nothing to do with me taking pictures of them. These three guys (or girls) were out in the slough at Lake Center . I wonder what the eagles think of all these pelicans…

Thanks,
Randy Johnston

    Confluence Trash Bash Held Saturday........

Saturday, crews descended upon Missouri and Illinois waterways to participate in the annual Confluence Trash Bash, including Creve Coeur Lake, the Missouri side of the Chain of Rocks Bridge as well as Chouteau Island in Illinois.  Many of the volunteers requested to clean up site 3, which was an old salvage yard hidden beneath hundreds of old tires.  However, blatant littering kept volunteers busy in other parts of Creve Coeur Park........

Mississippi River At Festus, Missouri

     Man Reels In Massive Catfish........

Late Thursday night, a man fishing along the banks of the Mississippi River near Festus, Missouri hauled in a one hundred pound catfish.  The man and his friends were unsure of the size of the fish, but fifteen minutes after the fight began, the catfish was landed.  Although this fish is large, it is not a state record.  A 130 pound blue cat was caught in the Missouri River in 2010, but the largest fish on state record was a 139 pound paddlefish caught on Table Rock Lake in 2002........
