The Picture of the Day ....   was sent to us Al Benton who hails out of Palisades Yacht Club in a 1960, 27' Chris-Craft Constellation.

Bill,

This little wooden cruiser has been on the river for most of her 50 plus years. Although I don't know her complete history, I know that I am only her present steward. Her continued history on the river is presently in my hands and I feel an obligation to see that her story continues for future generations to enjoy. Hopefully I won't let her down. As a member of the Mississippi Valley Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society, Inc. I have a very large support group in keeping her afloat. She's a 1960, 27' Chris-Craft Constellation.

Thanks, Bill for all that you do for everyone "On The River".

    Missouri Getting Boat Racing Stadium........

A new marine stadium is under construction in Wheatland, Missouri.  Lucas Oil is building the facility next to their existing 3/8 mile clay track.  The race course will be 3,800 feet long, 400 feet wide, 10 feet deep, and rectangular in shape.  This man made lake will be slightly larger than Daytona International Speedway's Lake Lloyd, and it will play host to just about any recreational activity or competition that takes place on the water.   It is anticipated that racing on the course will commence in July........

   Winter is setting in.......

Coast Guard icebreakers to transit Keweenaw Waterway

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Two U.S. Coast Guard icebreakers are scheduled to transit the Keweenaw Waterway, near Houghton and Hancock, Mich., in the next 24-48 hours in order to conduct ice breaking operations in western Lake Superior.

Those who recreate on the ice are reminded to plan their activities carefully, use caution, and stay clear of the shipping channels during these days.

The Coast Guard Cutter Katmai Bay is scheduled to transit first, followed by the Cutter Biscayne Bay.

The commercial shipping industry has requested icebreaking assistance for the harbors of Duluth, Minn., Superior, Wis., and Thunder Bay, Ontario. The winter storms forecasted for Lake Superior make an open-water transit unsafe. To minimize the impact these transits have on the region’s developing ice, the two cutters will proceed at minimum safe speed.

The Parrent Five Family News.....

Bill,

Got a note from Danielle Parrent about the "Booms" they experienced last Friday afternoon. There were no military operations going on at the time so they were told that it could have been caused by either an unexploded piece of ordinance that detonated as they passed or a "Seneca Gun", an unusual underwater phenomena that could be caused by boulders falling from shelves (cliffs). When they crash into the solid bottom they sound like a cannon, sending a loud rumble to the surface. Interesting...

Bill:

When I saw the Pic of the Day today, I was reminded of our trip to Gulf Shores & Dauphin Island a couple of years ago. We took the ferry from Ft. Morgan to Dauphin Island and ate at a cute restaurant there.

What struck me the most was this sign. (attached)

Naturally, it made me think of you. It ain't Jamaica, but it's pretty nice! What better place to set up a satellite office...in the World's Birdiest Coastal Town!

The 2nd pic is just a great scene from Gulf Shores. This is why we were devastated when the oil spill occurred this last year. I hope it still looks like this!

Hi Bill,

The ferry carries 2 rows of cars , one on either side of the center island where the bridge deck is located. It's deep drafted and travels across the open waters of Mobil Bay from Dauphin Island to the Ft. Morgan near Gulf Shores Ab.

A small, quiet restaurant on whose dock I took the second photo is 3 blocks from the bridge from the mainland.

Cheers,

A news story from waow.com reported that Jake Stachovak was prepping for the trip of a lifetime: Paddle a sea kayak 5,000 miles around the eastern portion of the United States.

Jake was planning to depart from Portage, Wisconsin, paddle down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, eventually returning to Portage. He had to change his plans because of the very cold weather in the northern United Sates and showed up in St. Louis a few days later to start his journey.

Making Headway - Weekly Column
    By Captain Larry Walker

The 2001 collision between the Navy Submarine U.S.S. Greenville and a Japanese fishing vessel reminds us that a lapse in safety procedures can result in tragedy. The National Transportation Safety Board ultimately concluded that the accident was due to the failure of the Captain and crew to adhere to proper procedures.

The submarine was engaged in an emergency surfacing maneuver. It is clear that there were some errors in procedure by both the captain and some of the Greenville 's crewmembers. It is worth discussing what we can learn from that type of incident.

There are many issues before the safety organizations that reviewed the actions of the submarine and the fishing vessel. There is the question of why the captain of the submarine "shortened" the process of detecting surface vessels before he began his rapid ascent to the waterline. Quite simply, he may have been in too much of a hurry to adhere to the "standard" procedure.

There is also speculation as to whether the civilian visitors onboard distracted the officers and crew from their appointed duties. The degree to which there were distractions, however, was the result of the policy of the captain. After all, he alone decides if the visitors will be in the vicinity of sailors that are charged with performing crucial tasks.

There was some talk about the prevailing weather and sea conditions at the time of the accident. Were the sea conditions such that the normal periscope procedure for identifying surface contacts was inadequate? Should the emergency surfacing maneuver not have been done in those sea conditions? Would the Japanese fishing vessel have been spotted if the seas were calmer?

There are parallels between those questions and issues, and the procedures that we routinely follow on our recreational vessels. For example, it may be your procedure that children under a certain age or size must wear a life vest while your boat is underway. That is a prudent policy. What do you think would happen if you relaxed that procedure, and later that day you hit a submerged object and started sinking?

You may decide that storage of extra gear or equipment in your engine compartment is not advisable. Because of that decision, your engine space is generally free of "loose gear." However, you may suspend that rule during your offshore trip to the islands, because you have a lot of extra gear onboard. That might just be the time that your storm anchor finds its way over near your engine and leans against your fan belt until it wears through.

You could find yourself 100 miles off shore with no fan belt. Eventually, your engine overheats, so you shut it down. In the process, you have had extra equipment running while your battery was "not" charging. Upon trying to restart your engine, your battery is too weak for the job. When you try to radio for help, your weak (or dead) battery makes that impossible.

As the skipper of your vessel, you are charged with setting the standards under which you operate. If a procedure is warranted and reasonable, MAINTAIN IT! To relax it is to lower your safety standards. After all, don't your family and friends deserve the highest standard of safety?

Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!

Captain Larry Walker is the president of World Wide Marine Training, Inc., a U.S. Coast Guard Approved facility authorized to give examinations for captain's licenses up to 200 Ton Master, Able Seaman up to Unlimited, STCW-95, Radar, ARPA and other Endorsements (www.fromthehelm.com)

Con Trios Yacht Club ........

From the fog to the people that missed it.
“The Con Trios Holiday Party”

Saturday afternoon at 2:00 the stage was set and the Hospitality room was assembled. The 20 foot Con Trios Floating Bar in Classic “T” configuration was the centerpiece of the room. The seven eight top tables were arranged in an asymmetric “U” leaving room for the modest dance floor and laptop sound system. Cool Jazz flowed from the speakers as guests began arriving. The dress was very casual early but by 4:00 the room began to transform; evening wear and Christmas ties began to fill the room. The party was getting started.

In the large foyer of the banquet room registration started on schedule. Gifts were passed out while Lefty the one armed bar tender set himself up for the coming rush. Lefty really has two arms and skillfully served the spirits. Six forty five pm all joined in a brief prayer and plates started coming to tables. Chef John Klipp delivered a meal that cannot be described in hotel terms. The desert table was incredible. A full belly can kill a party, so quickly the old board and new board were called up, Commodores were thanked and the Galaxy band took control of the party. Before anyone had a chance to yawn or loosen their belt the large dance floor filled up. Galaxy played dance music from all genres with horns keyboards excellent vocals. Everyone danced all night. But that’s not the end of the story.

Back in the hospitality room, coolers restocked, Ice buckets refilled trays of clean glasses and ten pizzas stood ready as “Lefty” poured everyone one last drink for the long walk back. The room transformed again, the private members only after hour’s club opened. With no delay a second laptop was added to the system and the dance continued until the last girl stopped dancing at 5:10 am.

As the last man standing I dutifully closed the room it began to set in that this is the end of my run. In about two hours I pass the torch and this mess over to Alan.

It has been my honor and privilege to be your Fleet Captain this year.

During the winter, the Mississippi River plays host to one of the largest concentrations of bald eagles in North America.  Since the rapids just to the south of the Chain of Rocks Bridge are just right for eagles to fish for food, the Bridge is the perfect spot to view some eagles.  On January 15 - 16, 2011 Eagle Days will be descending on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, and will include educational programs, a hands-on exhibit of local birds, a replica of an eagle's nest and much more.  The event is free........

Ohio River

Coast Guard investigates barge taking on water on the Ohio River

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Coast Guard is responding to a report of a barge taking on water at mile marker 626, Monday, on the Ohio River, 21 miles west of Louisville.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., the captain of the motor vessel City of Redwood notified the Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley command center that a barge they were pushing was taking on water. The barge is carrying a cargo of hydrochloric acid.

The Coast Guard dispatched a response team and notified Kentucky and Indiana state and local officials.

There are no reports of lost or contaminated cargo, flooding in the cargo tanks, or pollution in the water, as the flooding is limited to the void spaces of the barge.

"We've dispatched a team of marine investigators to the towing vessel, and they are currently working with the crew of the vessel to ensure that the flooding is contained to the void space. They are also verifying that none of the cargo has been released," said Ens. Tucker Rodeffer, chief of Facility Inspections for Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.

   Where Are The Patrons ?

Hi Bill

Several years ago we boater enjoyed the year around operations of the club at Woodland. Since the closing I have heard complaints there is nowhere to go in the winter months.

Last evening, Dec. 2nd, I arrived at Palisades around 6:00 p.m. and was the 6th customer. By 7:00 p.m. I was the only customer until 8:30 when I went back to my boat at Woodland. Also the kitchen served 3 customers all day including myself.

So, where are all the boater who need a river place to go.

River History....

December 05, 2009 in River History

The United States Coast Guard restricted the passage of all recreational vessels between mile marker 288.6 and 297.7 of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and all commercial vessels between mile marker 288.6 and 293.5.

The safety zone was established because the water inside the area was electrified for a fish kill and contact with the water could cause serious injury or death to a human.

The fish kill was conducted by the Illinois Department of Land and Natural Resources in an on-going attempt to keep the Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes....

Delta Queen News........

Dear RiverBill,

you haven't heard from us for quite a while, so we'd like to give you an update on the status of the Delta Queen.

There is a lot of good news:

The operators of the Delta Queen Hotel at Chattanooga have taken tremendous efforts to keep the Delta Queen in perfect condition and though business was not going very well for a while, a new management team now has improved the situation a lot. Numerous volunteers have spend hundreds, if not thousands of hours of working on the Delta Queen to help keeping her in good condition.

Also, the new management of the Delta Queen Hotel has launched the "Delta Queen Preservation Foundation" and already had their first fundraiser event. The goal of the Foundation is to fund the preservation of the historic vessel as well as buy her and eventually bring her back to the rivers (for details, see: Save the Delta Queen).

Ambassadors International (AMIE), who are still the owners of the Delta Queen, have set a mid-november deadline for bids for a potential sale of the Delta Queen. Obviously there had been a lot of bids, though AMIE is not disclosing what the plans of these bidders are for the Delta Queen. (The Delta Queen Preservation Foundation of course has placed a bid, too).

Since the Republicans have been successful in the recent elections, political support for the Delta Queen eventually is on the rise again.

To avoid misunderstanding: The DQ issue was and is a non-partisan issue, but a few powerful Democratic politicians (especially James Oberstar) had been using their influence within their party to block any support for the DQ. Now that Oberstar is no longer Chairman of the House's Transportation Committee, there is a new chance to get a renewed exemption for the Delta Queen through House and Senate, with t! he votes of Republicans as well as Democrats who are in favor of the Delta Queen.

Great news ahead, hopefully

We're expecting news from AMIE about the sale of the Delta Queen very soon and will keep you updated on this. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the Delta Queen will be sold to someone who really cares about her historic value, who has the energy to fight for a new exemption from Congress and who has the funding ready to bring her back to the rivers.

Thank you very much for your ongoing support. More than ever, we’re convinced that there is a way to save the Delta Queen and bring her back to the rivers again.

I still love Walt Disney, saying: "If you can dream it, you can do it."

Yours Sincerely,
Franz Neumeier

The Crossing

Yes INDEED it was a great day as we headed into the Blue Yonder. Somehow we were able to Negotiate 26 hours of travel into one day. At times we realized that Life Made Simple isn't always easy. Thankfully, it was a Warm One and as Craig was playing pirate he said Wood Ya have a Distinctive Time and he tried to get me to Surrender the Booty in the middle of Gulf of Mexico. I said to him, are you Semi Crazy and have a bad case of Ititeous or Maybe Later go find Whatz'er-Name. I would've agreed if he was a little more Clean Cut at the time. One thing's for sure we live The Goode Life.
(Craig's contribution to the blog)!

It made for a long few days as we made the 200 mile crossing through the Gulf of Mexico. When the sun set the night before, we just knew it was going to be a good day.

Planning was an easy thing for Mr. Safety (Craig) as he looked at worse case scenario and was prepared for anything. As our friend Pete said, "it's nothing to shake a stick at"! This trip is to be taken very seriously and our planning proved that to be true

Thanks to funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is dredging out some silted in oxbows located in the channelized portion of the Kaskaskia River.  There have been complaints for many years about the oxbows and the dredging along them has been piecemeal as funds became available.  Now the Corps has enough funding to dredge 60,000 cubic yards that had accumulated in the oxbows between New Athens and the White Swan Boat Ramp........

Very Sad News

    Captain Larry Walker 1951 - 2010........

Good Morning Bill,

We just received some tragic news from the high seas in the British Virgin Islands. Jan and Joe are vacationing with Captain Larry Walker and other friends in the British Virgin Islands.

Yesterday morning, Captain Larry Walker suffered a massive heart attack while diving. Despite all efforts, they were unable to revive him. In Joe and Jan's absence, I am trying to make sure everyone knows and you were the first person I thought of. I know he was a beloved friend of many boaters on the river.

Jan and Joe are working with the British Embassy to return Larry home to Oriental, North Carolina. In the meantime, I thought it would be helpful for you to have the attached a link to the Town Dock - the local paper in Oriental, North Carolina, Larry's home town.

When I receive more news from Joe and Jan, I will let you know.

Sally Warnhoff
Grafton Harbor

http://towndock.net/news/larry-walker-1951-2010

Larry’s last post on facebook

Your time does not accumulate; it is consumed. Foregoing an opportunity to participate in something is a permanent loss for which there is no ‘do over.‘”

Larry Walker

A note from Sally Warmhoff of Grafton Harbor

Thanks Bill. When I am in contact with Joe and Jan, I will let them know how responsive you were. We all appreciate all of your support.

You are a true friend of the river and Captain Larry was first and foremost a river man. I will keep you posted as I receive more news from Joe and Jan. Larry hails from Oriental, North Carolina and as I mentioned, Joe and Jan are working with the British and American Embassy to return him home.

I would imagine once Joe and Jan return to Grafton, they will plan a memorial service for him so his fellow river men can remember him with a celebration of his life on the river.

Again, my personal thanks for your support. I will look forward to seeing your posting on River Bills.

Oh, my - I just keep thinking that Jan and Joe just don't ever get a vacation and I am so saddened for them that this happened at all - they were best friends with Larry and let alone this happens on a trip they thought was a vacation.

This Week In St. Louis River History........

There was big news on the Rivers around St. Louis during the first week of December in 1982.  Over 10 inches of rain fell in the area, and the Mississippi River crested 9 feet above flood stage. The Meramec River had a record crest that wiped out portions of Arnold, Eureka, and Valley Park.  This flood, along with dioxin-tainted soil brought about the demise of Times Beach, Missouri........

US Coast Guard new Release

Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw continues "Christmas Ship" tradition

CLEVELAND – The Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw (WLBB 30), acting as the “Christmas Tree Ship," is scheduled to arrive at Chicago’s Navy Pier for a two-day event, starting Friday, Dec. 3, 2010 at 8 a.m. to distribute Christmas trees to more than a thousand deserving families.

Click here to learn more about Chicago's Christmas Tree Ship tradition.

The distribution of the holiday trees to trucks from community organizations will begin off the decks of “Chicago’s Christmas Ship,” the USCGC MACKINAW, on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 10 a.m., after the first three trees are given to three families during the brief public ceremony.

Public tours of the Cutter Mackinaw will also be available on Friday and Saturday from 1:30 p.m. – 5 p.m.

WHO: The U.S. Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, "Chicago’s Christmas Ship” Committee, International Shipmasters’ Association, Chicago Marine Heritage Society, Friends of the Marine Community, Chicago Yachting Association, Navy League of the United States, and Navy Pier.

WHAT: The arrival ceremony for the new state-of-the-art Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw will take place at Chicago’s Navy Pier Friday, Dec. 3, 2010 at 8:30 a.m., welcomed in grand fashion by fire and police boats, a live military band and hundreds of students throughout the morning.

WHEN: The major event occurs on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010 at 10 a.m. near the “Captain at the Helm” statue south of the Navy Pier entrance. The Mackinaw will be welcomed in honor of the “Chicago’s Christmas Ship” tradition bringing Christmas trees to over a twelve hundred deserving families in the Chicago area.

WHERE: Navy Pier, 600 East Grand Avenue, Chicago

The ceremony includes presentation of colors by the North Suburban Young Marines from Great Lakes, Illinois and a memorial wreath laying ceremony commemorating the Merchant Marine officers lost on the Great Lakes. The high point of the ceremony is the fly over by a United States Coast guard helicopter carrying a memorial wreath to be placed on the waves near the Chicago lighthouse. (Weather permitting)

Three families, representing the more than twelve hundred deserving families who will be given trees this year, will be present to receive the first Christmas trees.

YesterYear's River Picture of the Day in 2009...... was a shot of a very unique looking motor vessel named the  Pickett Hastings traveling up-river in front of the bluffs on October 4th, 2009.

A search of the internet showed that the owner is Capt'n Ike Hastings who is 85 years old and this is his 49th or 50th boat.  It was named for a family member who served in the Civil War. The building of the boat took about three years.... some of the spec's are listed below.

Ike also built an amphibious air plane that is hoisted on to the front deck of the Pickett between flights and according to the American Sternwheel Association, this sternwheeler is the only aircraft carrier in its registry.

Ike fought in World War II and then was a teacher for 30 years.  Now he travels the rivers.

Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge Robert Dow denied the preliminary injunction that would have required the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to immediately sever the link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Basin.  Judge Dow stated that the Great Lakes states that had filed the suit were likely to lose their suit against the Corps, as they have not proven that a carp invasion was imminent.........

Missouri River History

    D-Day....  And The Missouri River....

When the leaders of the Allied forces agreed upon the June 1944 European invasion across the English Channel, the 135,000 soldiers were going to need to hitch a ride aboard transports.  Many of the transports, landing craft tanks (LST), were built in the Darby shipyard, located in Kansas City.  After completion, the LSTs took a trip down the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, prior to heading to Europe.  During the winter of 1943, ice and lack of rain conspired to drop the level of the Missouri River, leaving many LSTs stranded.  Luckily, a warmer and rainier January in 1944 allowed the Missouri River to rise up for war........

Tombigbee River At Demopolis, Alabama

Christmas On The River Gets A Bit Of History........

Things are done a bit differently in Alabama, including Christmas celebrations.  Running from December 2nd through December 5th is Christmas On The River at Demopolis.  Since the festival's inception in 1972, the festival includes a reading of the Christmas Story, the crowning of St. Nick, candlelight tours of antebellum homes and a BBQ cook-off.  The best known part of the COTR festival, however, is the nautical parade that will be held Saturday night. This year, the Nina and Pinta have sailed into Demopolis for the festival........

Boat Being Converted Into Hybrid Ferry........

In order to transport tourists to national landmarks in New York City in a more environmentally-friendly fashion, Kornblower Cruises and Events commissioned a hydrogen powered hybrid ferry.  In addition to hydrogen fuel cells, the ferry will use wind turbines, solar power, as well as conventional diesel power.  The captain of the ferry will be able to choose which of the various fuels to use.  The re-powered vessel is expected to launch in April........

US Coast Guard Pic

CLEVELAND -

Coast Guardsmen bring Cleveland Harbor's East Basin Channel Lighted Buoy 11 aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay, based in Detroit, Dec. 2, 2010, to replace it with a smaller unlit buoy designed to better withstand damage from ice as Lake Erie freezes during the winter months.

U.S., Canadian and industry partners work together to retrieve or replace about half of the lighted and unlighted buoys and beacons throughout the Great Lakes in an evolution known as Operation Fall Retrieve.

River History....

December 2, 1967 in River History

The famous River Queen steamboat sank on the St. Louis Riverfront on this day in 1967. High water, ice and other problems made saving the sinking vessel impossible. The steamboat quickly bokeup and the city of St. Louis brought in a scoop shovel to demolished what remained her, leaving behind only the steel hull.

It was indeed a famous riverboat, as it was used in the movie.. "Gone With the Wind."

The River Queen started her life in 1923 as the Eagle Packet Company steamer named the Cape Girardeau and later it became the the Greene Line's tourist steamboat, the Gordon C. Greene. She was the last packet boat built by the Howard Shipyards at Jeffersonville, Indiana and ran the rivers until 1952 when she was converted to a hotel, restaurant, bar/museum and gift shop under the names of Sarah Lee, the Sternwheller and then the River Queen.

Click here and here for a couple of small photos taken of the sinking steamboat.

Mandatory Flood Insurance Update

Senate Bill Penned To Delay Flood Insurance........

Wednesday, U.S. Senators, Dick Durbin, D-Ill and Chuck Schumer, D-NY, introduced legislation that will delay the requirement to purchase flood insurance for 5 years in locations FEMA has designated as being at high risk for flooding.  The language in this bill mirrors the Flood Insurance Reform Priorities Act that was recently passed by the House.  The five year delay would allow time for levee upgrades in the Metro East St. Louis area, as well as in St. Charles, Missouri........

Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana

Maritime Industry Voices Concerns Over Dredge Funding Cuts........

Recently, maritime industry groups reiterated their concerns that the feds are slashing some $22 million from the Mississippi River dredging budget.  The worry is that this could result in a decrease in the amount of cargo coming into the Port of New Orleans.  Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers state that if there is a need for additional funding for dredging, the finances will not be re-allocated from other projects.  In the past, the redirected funds were originally set aside for maintaining locks and dams........

St. Louis Corps of Engineers schedules Dec. 1 open house on Upper Mississippi River Comprehensive Plan

St. Louis Corps of Engineers schedules Dec. 1 open house on Upper Mississippi St. Louis, November 30 - The St. Louis District Corps of Engineers will host an open house tomorrow from 4-6 p.m. at the Old Monroe, Mo., Knights of Columbus Hall to answer questions about the Upper Mississippi River Comprehensive Plan. The open house will feature information stations geared to answer questions on the Plan and the alternatives studied, to include Plan H. A public discussion will follow from 6-7 p.m.

The Knights of Columbus Hall is located at 121 Maryknoll Rd., Old Monroe, Mo., 63369.

Congress authorized the Upper Mississippi River Comprehensive Plan in 1999 to address water resource and related land resource problems and opportunities in the Upper Mississippi River Basin above Cairo, Ill. The study focused on comprehensive flood damage reduction on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers floodplains.

Under the study, the Corps investigated eight flood risk management options - ranging from flood buyouts, and nonstructural plans, to structural alternatives with varying levels of protection. The study considered the benefits, risks and costs of every option.

The study was finalized and sent to Congress in January 2009.

The Corps of Engineers was unable to recommend any of the systematic options to Congress because the costs outweighed the benefits.

"The Corps understands the need for a comprehensive plan," said Col. Tom O'Hara, St. Louis District commander. "An Upper Mississippi River Comprehensive Plan is needed to ensure a more unified approach to flood risk management and will allow us to better plan for flood risk reduction."

Information on the Upper Mississippi River Comprehensive Plan, to include frequently asked questions can be found at the St. Louis District web site: www.mvs.usace.army.mil.

The above re-printed from an e-mail from Mary Markos MVS of US Army Corps of Engineers

Boat Drinks…

December 1st is National Bloody Mary Day
It's the birthday of a boat drink made with vodka, tomato juice and a dash of Tabasco sauce.

It's said that the Bloody Mary was created in the 1920s by a French bartender named Fernand Petiot. he took the drink with nhim when he migrated to the United States to work at New York's St. Regis Hotel.

The cocktail was first named ..."the Red Snapper" and was later changed to "Bloody Mary" in honor of actress Mary Pickford, who had another drink named after her that was made of rum, Grenadine and Maraschino.

Mississippi River Delta

Biofuel Manufacturing Is Affecting Mississippi Water........

Recently, the U.S. Geological Survey released the findings from a study of the water quality and quantity in the Mississippi River Delta, as it relates to the production of biofuels. Since it takes about 80% more water to raise corn than cotton, more water is being drawn from the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer to irrigate the fields.  The level of water in the aquifer has been on the decline since 1980.  At this time, the amount of water being removed from the aquifer exceeds the amount entering the aquifer........

Mississippi River Near Lake Village, Arkansas

Structurally Sound Bridge To Be Removed........

The Benjamin G. Humphreys Bridge has been a navigational hazard to traffic on the Mississippi River since it opened on October 4, 1940. The Bridge has sustained more barge collisions than any other bridge on the Mississippi River.  In 1951, it even took a hit by an Air Force jet.  The bridge also has another unique distinction, the main span of the bridge is in Arkansas, making it the only bridge over the lower Mississippi River where the state boundary is not the main River channel.  The replacement bridge will be located 3/8 mile downstream from the Humphreys Bridge, and will carry U.S. 82 across the Mississippi River without impeding River traffic........
