Added Sunday Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri A Look Back At The Future Arch Grounds Being Cleared........
The year was 1939 when St. Louis Mayor Bernard Dickmann took a crowbar to the first of 486 buildings about the be demolished to make way for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and the Gateway Arch. Reportedly, 179 buildings were vacant, 131 were partially occupied and only 176 were fully occupied. The project would also involve removing the railroad trestle along the wharf and relocating it into a tunnel located below the monument.......

Added Sunday Lake Of The Ozarks Squall Line, Possible Tornado Destroyed Docks, Boats........
On Wednesday, a violent storm ripped across the central portions of Missouri, leaving behind bent and twisted docks and damaged boats at the Lake of the Ozarks.
The storm flipped over a Tri-Toon pontoon boat and it's dock in Oak Ridge Acres, some 8 miles east of Warsaw. The dock is located at the 83.5 Mile Marker of the Lake of the Ozarks. A bass boat was totaled after the dock it was tied up in was crushed.
Meteorologist Cory Rothstein of the National Weather Service in Springfield says that a squall line moved through the area. It did have a small amount of rotation, but officials cannot confirm a tornado had touched down........

Fireworks In The Riverbend........ Godfrey OK's Fireworks, But Not The 4th of July Festival........
Traditionally, thousands of people head to Glazebrook Park in Godfrey, Illinois for the annual 4th of July Family Fun Fest and the accompanying fireworks show.
Godfrey Mayor Mike McCormick says that this year, the Godfrey Village Board has decided to proceed with the fireworks show, but it will likely be another year before the festival returns.
McCormick says that there are plenty of great vantage points around the village to see the fireworks show, including the college, Monticello Plaza and the neighborhoods nearby........

Boat Manufacturer Barletta Wrapping Up Manufacturing Facility Expansion.........
Barletta Pontoon Boats in Bristol, Indiana recently announced that their new 146,000 square foot facility is primed to come online and begin production by the end of April 2021.
The company broke ground on the new factory back in July 2020 in response to increased retail interest and accelerated growth. So far, the entire Barletta lineup is built in their original 110,000 square foot facility.
Barletta will shift the above deck assembly operations to the new facility, while the below deck fabrication and welding will expand into he current facility. The move is expected to more than double the company's output........

Mississippi River Near Baton Rouge, Louisiana A Few Facts About The Bonnet Carre Spillway........
After officials blew a hole in a levee to relieve some of the Mississippi River floodwater's pressure on the levee at New Orleans, they decided that there had to be a better way to control the river.
In 1928, Congress federalized flood control along the Mississippi River and it's tributaries. Congress placed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in charge. In 1929, the Corps began building the Bonnet Carre Spillway at Norco, which was the site of a natural crevasse 33 miles upstream from New Orleans.
THe Bonnet Carre (which is French for "Square Hat") is simply a 5 3/4 mile long ditch between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. It is 7,700 feet wide at the river, and 12,400 feet wide at the lake.
The Corps constructed a weir to hold back the river consisting of 350 20-foot wide bays, each closed off by 20 creosoted timbers called pins or needles that are placed upright in the bays........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri River Levels ........
The National Weather Service says that recent rainfall has driven the level of the Mississippi River at Hannibal, Missouri to 13.92 feet early Wednesday afternoon. Flood stage at Hannibal is 17 feet. The river is forecasted to rise to 14.2 feet by Saturday morning before it begins to fall in the afternoon

Kentucky Flooding News Governor Calls For Disaster Declaration For Historic Flooding........
On Wednesday, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear sent in a request for a major disaster declaration to be issued for the historic flooding damage. Kentucky saw some of the worst flooding in it's history in late February into early March.
The flooding occurred along the Green, Kentucky, Licking, Ohio. Red and Mississippi Rivers. Beshear says that flooding was some of the worst he has seen during his lifetime.
Beshear added that some 2,000 homes were damaged, some infrastructure was destroyed, so they are requesting that the president declare a disaster so that will provide both individual and public assistance........

Saline River in Southern Illinois IEPA Looking Into Possible River Pollution........
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is looking into possible water contamination that could have come from the American Coal Company' property located near Galatia.
The heavy rains across southern Illinois seem to have caused the Middle Fork of the Saline River to turn into a deep rusty red color. Late last month, IEPA staff collected water samples for analysis.
According to Kim Biggs, IEPA public information officer, the initial investigation indicates that the pollution came from the American Coal Company's Galatia Mine........

Mississippi River Near Dorena, Missouri Flooding Keeps Dorena-Hickman Ferry Closed........
Officials have announced that the Dorena-Hickman Ferry will remain closed through at least April 10th due to the flooding Mississippi River. The ferry had closed on March 4th, when floodwaters covered the Kentucky landing in Hickman Harbor.
The Mississippi River forecast indicates that April 10th is the soonest that the ferry could consider returning to service. That date may be pushed back is there is additional major rainfall in the Mississippi or Ohio River valleys........

Missouri River Flooding Outlook Dry Conditions Have Reduced Flooding Threat........
Residents living near the Missouri RIver, especially in the Upper Missouri River Basin, should have fewer concerns over seeing the Missouri River flooding thins year.
This is due to lower than normal snowpack in the Rocky Mountains and below normal precipitation so far this year. It looks like the summer will be dry throughout the Upper Missouri RIver Basin as well.
During Tuesday's annual U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spring public meeting, Kevin Low, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service said that the risk of flooding over much of the Missouri River Basin is below normal........

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri Corps, Cape Plan To Commemorate River Wall History........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District and the city of Cape Girardeau intend to commemorate the completion of the $20 million river wall improvement project with a ceremony at the wall near the Merriwether Pump station at 11 am on April 14th.
A joint statement released on Tuesday stated that a massive effort over a 15 year period was required to improve the reliability of the original floodwall, which was completed in 1964.
Improvement projects includes rock berm stabilization to the existing floodwall, floodwall joint repairs, toe drain replacement soil stabilization, closure gate seal replacement, the renovation of two pump stations and other miscellaneous structural and culvert work........

Mississippi River At New Orleans, Louisiana The Mississippi River Is Falling.... May Still Need To Open Bonnet Carre Spillway....
On Saturday, the Mississippi River at New Orleans, Louisiana is expected to reach a spring crest of 14.4 feet, which is well below the city's flood stage of 17 feet, and is considerably lower than the 20 - 25 feet that tops area levees.
Does this mean that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will not have to activate the Bonnet Carre Spillway this year? Corps officials are saying not necessarily.
Ricky Boyett spokesman for the Corps' new Orleans Division says that it is not possible to make a determination of whether the spillway or any other flood control structure will be needed, as it will depend on future weather events upstream........

Mark Twain Lake Mark Twain Lake North & South Spillways, Overlook Closing For Vaccination Clinic........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently announced that they would be closing the north and south spillways & the Overlook from 3 pm Tuesday, April 13 through 7 am Thursday April 15th for a COVID-19 vaccination clinic.
The closures will include the shooting range, disk golf course, the boat ramp, shelter houses and bathrooms.
The Air Force National Guard will be giving the clinic, and will provide vaccinations to approximately 1,200 people. The clinic is not an open event, as the participants being vaccinated have standing appointments with a scheduled time..........

Hoppie's Marina on the Mississippi River in Kimmswick, Mo., has been a popular stop for boaters for several decades. Hoppie and his wife Fern are great hosts for many travelers. People from around the world have traveled the Mississippi River by boat and often visit historic Kimmswick for lunch, dinner, shopping and touring. Officials have announced that Captain Ron's Bar & Grill, the home of the LOTO Shootout, will be the new home of AquaPalooza, which is scheduled for July 17, 2021.
The massive Lake of the Ozarks music event on the water had been held at Dog Days Bar & Grill. The event was cancelled in 2020, and this year, event organizer Benne Media was working on a venue and date change.
Event organizers were originally looking at Toad Cove, where H.Toad's and Shady Gators are located, however, the Missouri State Highway Patrol denied a permit for the location, citing safety concerns over the business of the location. THe MSHP has given a verbal approval for a regatta permit for Captain Ron's........

Cruising News Norwegian Cruise Lines Requiring Vaccinations Prior To Travel.........
Norwegian Cruise Lines is requesting permission to resume trips from U.S. ports starting on July 4th, with the requirement that passengers and crew members are vaccinated against COVID-19 at least 2 weeks prior to the trip./
Norwegian says that their proposed precautions go further than the steps of others in the travel and leisure industry that have already reopened, including airlines, hotels, restaurants and sporting events.
The Miami-based company intends to start U.S. sailings at 60 percent capacity, and increasing that to 80 percent in August and 100 percent in September. Norwegian also operates Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises........

April 6, 2017 in River History The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported that at around 1:15 am Thursday morning, nine barges broke free from their formation, and ended up pinned against Lock and Dam No.22 at Saverton, Missouri. Corps spokesman for the Rock Island District Allen Marshall said that it was not clear what exactly was aboard the barges, but he did confirm that no hazardous materials were aboard. Marshall said that the U.S. Coast Guard was on scene, and will be monitoring the situation. He added that engineers are also on the scene and working on a plan for removing the barges........ Missouri River Personalities Riverboat Captain Donating Mississippi River Library........
Over the years, riverboat navigator Bill Beacom amassed a personal library of over 300 books on a variety of aspects of the Missouri River/ Beacom assembled his library in an effort to acquire every bit of knowledge about the Missouri River as he could.
Beacom's library covers such topics as the Missouri River Basin's ecology, geology and climatology, includes old maps and scientific reports from early explorations and railroad surveys of the region dating back to the 1800s, and plenty of books on fish.
As Beacom is getting older, he has decided to donate his library to the U.S. Geological Survey' Columbia Environmental Research Center in Columbia, Missouri. He says that he wanted to pass his collection on to someone who would use it.........

Ohio River Near Longbottom, Ohio Three Wayward Barges Float Down The Ohio River........
While Trolling The Internet.... We reeled in a photo showing three barges that appear to have broken free from their tow, and were floating down the Ohio River on Sunday afternoon. Witness Gerrad Parry says that the incident occurred near the 53 Mile Marker on Route 24 near Longbottom, Ohio....

Illinois River Near Pekin, Illinois Annual Pelican Arrival A Month Early........
Last week, a sizable flock of American White pelicans were spotted hanging out in a Pekin lagoon. The pelicans normally migrate along the Illinois River during May, so this year, their arrival is a month early.
According to Dennis Endicott, president of the Peoria Audubon Society, these sightings have become more commonplace during the past two decades, likening their comeback to that of the bald eagle.
Endicott adds that one factor in the pelican population resurgence is the water quality now compared to years past. Endicott also notes that the pelicans help out with the Asian carp problem in the Illinois RIver by eating them........

Brunswick Corp. recently released their 2020 Sustainability Report, which focuses on the company's Environmental, Social and Governance strategies through their efforts to increase clean manufacturing and it's stewardship in the variety of communities in which it operates.

Fishy Tales From Fort Lauderdale, Florida Possible Sea Mine Discovered On A Beach........
Early Sunday morning, a possible military explosive training device was found on the shore of a popular Florida beach. The device, which was believed to be a sea mine, was spotted at the small beachfront town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, located just north of Fort Lauderdale.
The possible Naval mine was spotted by a Sheriff's Deputy while on patrol at around 2:30 am Sunday morning. Deputies then secured the area and proceeded to cordon off a portion of the beach.
The Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad was called out and worked with the U.S. Air Force to safely remove the device from the beach, which was later reopened. The Air Force has taken custody of the device for further investigation........

Added Sunday Missouri River Management Missouri Teaming up With Others States for Levee Improvement........
Missouri officials are looking to get the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to make some changes to the Missouri River levee system. According to Dru Buntin, Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources, Missouri has teamed up with Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa to propose changes to the levee system to avoid the issues that made the 2019 flooding so bad.
Buntin says that the states intend to work together and will take a regional approach when assessing the areas where targeted focus and investment in flood management will have the greatest effect.
A main point of focus in the Missouri RIver L-536 Levee in Atchison and Holt Counties, which ended up being breached in five locations during the flood of 2019. THe Atchison County Levee District has suggested moving the levee back to allow more room for floodwaters. They also suggest using a more modern levee design........

Added Sunday Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Eastbound Poplar Street Bridge Lanes Closed For Six Months........
Thursday morning, the Illinois Department of Transportation closed down the right three lanes eastbound lanes of the Poplar Street Bridge as well as the ramp to southbound Illinois ROute 3 and the ramp to southbound Tudor Avenue in East St. Louis for repair work.
These lane closures are expected to remain in effect until early October, which will allow Crews to replace the bridge's decking. This project is part of the $29.8 million project to rehab bridges in the area........

Mississippi River At Wood River, Illinois The Wood River Levee Has Earned 100 Year Accreditation........
Over the past 12 years, work on Mississippi River levees around the St. Louis metro region has going on while officials aimed to avoid losing their certification.
The thinking was that the levees became deficient, so the federal government would threaten to decertify. Now, following a series of upgrades, the Wood River Levee system has earned accreditation for a 100 year flood level.
Madison County Board Chairman Kurt Prenzler says that with the accreditation, the flood insurance will not be skyrocketing, which will ease the minds of local residents........

Missouri River Near Maryland, Heights, Missouri MSD Filed Suit Against Levee District To See How Ratepayer Dollars Were Spent........
The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District recently filed suit against the controversial Howard Bend Levee District seeking to clear up how the ;levee district has been spending millions of taxpayer dollars over the years.
This lawsuit was filed on March 25 in the St. Louis County Circuit Court and is another financial and legal issue for the beleaguered levee district, which is already fighting a lawsuit from it's largest taxpayer, the Hollywood Casino. The City of Maryland Heights is also contesting taxes on property it owns within the district.
MSD is alleging that the levee district will not make the methodology for calculating levee taxes available, nor have they keep proper financial records over the years........

Mississippi River At Keokuk, Iowa Temporary Carp Deterrent System Installed At Lock No.19........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Geological Survey and partners have installed a temporary experimental underwater Acoustic Deterrent System at Mississippi River Lock No.19 at Keokuk, Iowa.
This system has been installed as part of a study of how the invasive Asian carp respond to sound and signals. Marybeth Brey, a USGS research fish biologist and project leader says that if the system is successful in deterring Asian carp, it could have significant implications for invasive species management.
Brey adds that the new deterrent system is designed to be more selective and not affect the native species, creating another tool for resource managers to use in the fight against Asian carp........

Missouri River Management Corps Hosting Virtual Missouri River Meeting On April 6th........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Missouri River Water Management Division is inviting the public to join in on one of two virtual public meetings that are scheduled for April 6, 2021. The webinars will be held at 1 pm and 6 pm central time.
John Remus, chief of the Missouri River Water Management Division says that the webinars are being held to update the region on current hydrologic conditions including such as snowpack status, the runoff forecast for the year and how the operations during the runoff season will meet the authorized purposes for the Missouri River Mainstem System.
Participants are encouraged to submit questions prior to the webinar via the "submit your questions in advance" link in the meeting announcement.

According to various Facebook accounts:
Reportedly, a man jumped from the Interstate 270 Bridge and swam to Mosenthein Island, where he was retrieved by the St. Louis Fire Department aboard Marine 6.
The man was safely transported to the St. Louis riverfront and released by St. Louis Paramedics, where he was reunited with family. No other details were reported at this time........

Lake Of The Ozarks Big Thunder Marine Acquired Lakeport Marina........
Big Thunder Marine has announced that they will be expanding to the new Big Thunder at Grand Glaize, located at the 19 Mile Marker of the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri at the location formerly known as Lakeport Marina.
Big Thunder will begin renting slips immediately, and in the early summer, they will be hosting a Summer Surf Experience with MasterCraft Boats, during which attendees can schedule a day with a professional trainer to learn how to wake board or surf.
Future plans for the marina will include the addition of a gas dock, a fully stocked store and a service and parts department which will be available soon. Full property development plans are still being formulated........

The historic Route 49 Branch Creek Bridge in Iron County, Missouri is up for grabs and relocation by historic or civic groups, government entities or private citizens, free of charge.
Those interested in the span may submit a proposal to the Missouri Department of Transportation Historic Preservation Section. The proposal has to be detailed in respects to dismantling, relocation, future usage and overall cost estimates.
The Route 49 Branch Creek Bridge is a five panel, 60 foot long Pratt Pony Truss structure constructed in 1924. It is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places........

Boating Safety North American Sober Skipper Advisory Council Nominations........
The Sea Tow Foundation recently opened the nomination process for membership in their North American Sober Skipper Advisory Council. Gail R. Kulp, Sea Tow Foundation executive director says that council members offer valuable input on best practices and safety initiatives in recreational boating.
Kulp says that the North American Sober Skipper Advisory Council has worked very hard to successfully raise awareness of boating safety. She ads that their involvement in promoting boating safety within their organizations while actively supporting other national initiatives has positively affected and increased boating safety efforts.
In May, five council members will wrap up their two year terms. The Council would like to replace two manufacturer positions and welcomes nominees from marine media, boating associations and the paddle sports segments to round out the council........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Arch Riverboats Offering Dinner Cruises........
Starting on Friday, April 2, the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch will begin offering their Skyline Dinner Cruises, which will run on Fridays and Saturdays, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm.
The Skyline Dinner Cruises offer live music, a chef-inspired menu and mesmerizing views of the St. Louis skyline. These cruises are an excellent way to celebrate a special occasion, having a romantic night out or just relaxing on the river.
Attendees can stroll around the riverboat's top deck to see St. Louis from a new vantage point as it lights up the nighttime sky. There is a cash bar available........

Boater Education Novice Boaters Can Learn Via Yamaha's Boating Academy.........
Over the past year, the number of new boaters has increased exponentially, and Yamaha Marine is making boating more accessible through their educational video series.
Yamaha's Boating Academy is hosted by Yamaha Pro Tyler Anderson and is intended to offer novice boaters basic tips while focusing on safety while on the water. Course topics will include boat ramp procedures, boating etiquette, and driving 101.
Dale Barnes, marketing division manager of Yamaha Marine Engine Systems says that there are many new boaters on the water and this is the perfect time to give them basic tips and safety information that will keep every one safe during the boating season........

Boat Manufacturer BRP To Offer Electric Models For Every Product Line By 2026........
BRP recently announced that their five year plan will be to offer electric models in each of their product lines by the end of 2026. To achieve this goal, the company will invest $300 million over five years for product development, specialized equipment infrastructure, facilities and production tooling.
Jose Boisjoli, BRP President and CEO says that they have always stated that electrification was never a question of "if", but rather of "when". He adds that they are excited to reveal their plans for enhancing the consumer experience by offering electric models.
Boisjoli went on to say that the company is leveraging their engineering know-how and innovation capabilities to lay out the best strategy for the development of electrically-propelled products........

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois Memorial Bridge Closure Will Be Delayed........
The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that the scheduled maintenance and repair work on the Quincy Memorial Bridge spanning the Mississippi River will start on April 12.
The project was originally scheduled to run from April 1 through November 30 and the start date has been bumped back nearly two weeks. No explanation for the delay was offered.
The Quincy Memorial Bridge Project will involve resurfacing the bridge deck, joint replacement and repair, repairs to structural steel, lighting replacements and other maintenance items........

Md., April 5, 2021 – You’ve likely seen the fishing line
recycling bins in many marinas and boatyards, but what really
happens after that line is collected? Recycling it into new
products is labor-intensive, requiring a series of workers to
comb through, sort, clean, remove hooks and weights, and
separate out encrusted debris from miles of entangled fishing
line. There also aren’t any recycling programs for
fishing-related materials like soft baits.
SPRINGFIELD,
Va., March 31, 2021 – No cost, no penalty vessel safety checks,
which up until last season were given more than 150,000 times
each year by hundreds of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S.
Power Squadrons volunteers at launch ramps, boat clubs and
marinas, are back.
