Fishing News From Carlyle Lake Catfish Population Looking Good At Carlyle Lake........
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources' fisheries biologists are predicting that catfish anglers headed to Carlyle Lake could have one of their best years yet.
The fisheries biologists say that the channel catfish population remains good, and that the catfish catches during the fall sampling were good and should provide good fishing.
Predicting that this year will be better than last year is a bold statement, as last year catfish anglers enjoyed phenomenal success. The fall sampling showed plenty of catfish in the four-to-eight pound range, with some even reaching 10 pounds........

Garmin recently announced that they have acquired the assets of GEOS Worldwide Limited and it's subsidiaries. GEOS is a privately held provider of emergency monitoring and incident response services.
GEOS is the operator of the International Emergency Response Coordination Center, or "nerve center" for rescue efforts triggered by Garmin's inReach personal satellite communicators.
Brad Trenkle, vice president of Garmin's outdoor segment said that the acquisition allows Garmin to provide more peace-of-mind to their inReach users. He adds that the addition to the Garmin family bolsters their commitment to helping their customers safely return home from their adventures.........

Cruising News Carnival Cruise Lines Extending Cancellations........
On Wednesday, Carnival Cruise Lines announced that they have extended their cruise cancellations in the United States through the end of March.
Carnival had previously stated that all cruises were cancelled through February. The latest announcement means that cruises will not resume until April 1, 2021.
The company stated that they will continue to evaluate the operating environment and public health challenges facing the nation as well as their cruising plans related to a phased-in return to service........

Upcoming Events January 24, 2021 Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri In-Person Eagle Days Event Rescheduled........
Officials have announced that the date for an in-person nature program about eagles along the Mississippi River has been changed. THe event will now be held on January 24th from 1 pm to 2 pm at Kiwanis Park.
Nature interpreter Gail Rublee will be on hand to discuss the life cycle and feeding patterns of the American bald eagle. Members of the Mississippi Hills Master Naturalists will construct an eagle's nest. Participants will be encouraged to help out.
On Saturday, January 23rd, the Missouri Department of Conservation will be hosting a virtual Eagle Days event, which will give participants an up-close view of live, rehabilitated eagles and post questions........

Mississippi River Near Davenport, Iowa Port Creation May Transform River Trade In The Quad Cities.......
Counties in the Quad Cities region are looking at forming a sprawling port that may transform commerce along the Mississippi River, and place the Quad Cities amongst the largest ports across the nation.
The boards of 15 counties along the Mississippi River from Keokuk, Iowa to Dubuque, Iowa passed resolutions to join a statistical port area and an application has been sent in for federal approval.
If all 15 counties opt into the port plan, the 222 mile long port would be the 68th largest in the United States, including coastal ports........

Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana Rocket Stage Shipped Along The River.......
On Wednesday, a parade of workers decked out in Mardi Gras beads accompanied by a brass band escorted a huge component of a new space rocket system as it was moved from a New Orleans spacecraft factory to a barge that will ferry it up the Mississippi River for testing.
The recently completed "core stage" of NASA's Space Launch System was destined for the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, approximately 50 miles northeast of New Orleans.
The new Space Launch System rockets are expected to eventually shoot astronauts to the moon as part of NASA's Artemis program. The core stage will undergo testing ahead of the first Artemis launch, which is scheduled for 2021........

Boating Litigation In Sausalito, California Couple Claims Municipality Illegally Seized, Destroyed Seaworthy Boat........
James and Charlotte Gollub recently filed a lawsuit against the city of Sausalito, California, claiming that the city's policy of seizing and destroying derelict vessels unlawfully targeted their seaworthy boat.
The Gollubs are seeking $2 million in damages. A settlement coference is scheduled for January 14th.
Attorney Arnold Berschler says that they are claiming that the seizure of the boat was a violation of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments........

Mississippi River Near Hastings, Minnesota Barge Worker That Drowned In The River Identified.......
On Wednesday, officials released the name of a barge worker that drowned in the Mississippi River in November after falling into the river while working near Hastings.
According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office, 44 year old Micah Pittman drowned near Point Douglas in Southern Washington County.
Pittman was reportedly wearing a life jacket when he drowned. The Washington County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating the incident.......

Mississippi River Near Grafton Tourism Helping Grafton Recover From Flooding........
According to Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin, the City of Grafton's tourism industry remains strong as we move towards spring.
Tourism remains the city's greatest economic engine and there are several venues helping the city recover from a spring and summer shortened by flooding,
Eberlin says that there are plenty of excellent vantage points from the various bed and breakfasts overlooking the river, as well as at Pere Marquette State Park.
He notes that The Loading Dock's ice skating rink continues to draw in visitors, as do the town's bars and restaurants........

The City of Keokuk, Iowa recently created a Capital Improvement Plan totaling nearly $89 million for public works projects.
The five year plan addresses roadways, sewer systems, a new public safety building and flood relief.
The project includes $1.1 million for flood damage repairs to the city's riverfront, including the levee........

Boat Sales NMMA: Boat Sales Expected To Remain Strong During 2020.......
The National Marine Manufacturers Association reports that during 2019, the retail unit sales of new powerboats were expected to have held steady at approximately 280,000 units, the second highest total since 2007.
The busy winter boat show season begins this week across the nation, and the NMMA is expecting that new powerboat sales will be up as much as 2 percent during 2020.
Frank Hugelmeyer, president of the NMMA says that sales during 2019 were close to the 11 year high experienced in 2018, even considering some softening in the freshwater fishing category........

Mississippi River At Memphis, Tennessee Crews Finish Dredging 10 Memphis District Harbors........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District has several responsibilities along the Mississippi River and one of the the most important among them is maintaining a river channel depth that allows for reliable barge shipping.
In order to meet their mandate, the Memphis District awarded a contract amounting to $7,987,200 to the Inland Dredging Company in April of 2019.
On December 23, 2019, Inland Dredging Co. wrapped up the dredging in all 10 of the Memphis District harbors. Crews removes a total of 1,289,598 cubic yards of sediment........

Illinois Flooding Aftermath Deadline For SBA Loans Drawing Near......
The deadline for business and home owners to apply for long term, low interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration that will help out with recovery from last year's flooding is Monday, January 13, 2020.
The SBA had approved the request for disaster declarations in Jersey, Alexander, Rock Island, Stephenson, Greene, Macoupin, Calhoun, Madison, Union, Pulaski, Jo Daviess, Winnebago, Carroll, Ogle, Whiteside, Henry and Mercer counties.
The Loans may be used to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate or personal property. Businesses may also apply to replace or repair machinery, equipment, inventory as well as other business assets........

Mississippi River Near Caruthersville, Missouri Man Sustained Serious Injuries In Boating Accident......
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that around 4:15 pm on December 28, 2019, a Caruthersville man sustained serious injuries in a boating accident.
The MSHP states that 58 year old Michael Hawks was working on an engine aboard his boat when he his his head on the engine.
Reportedly, the boat traveled forward until it struck the riverbank, throwing him out of the vessel. He was taken to a hospital for treatment........

The American Boat & Yacht Council recently announced that they will be holding the 11th Annual ABYC Standards Week January 6th - 10th, 2020 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The ABYC is a not-for-profit organization that develops the safety standards concerning the design, construction, maintenance and repair of recreational vessels.
ABYC standards, which covers all major boat systems and a wide variety of topics including U.S. federal requirements, are continuously reviewed and revised by more than 400 volunteers contribute to Project Technical Committees. During Standards week, the PTC meet and update the standards that are under review........

Chicago's Navy Pier is set to become the city's newest marina. It will be the first marina on Lake Michigan to exclusively offer short term, transient docking facilities with easy access to The People's Pier dining, shopping and entertainment.
The new marina will put the Navy Pier on the map as a premier boating destination for "Loopers", visiting boats from around the Great Lakes, as well as those transiting from the oceans to the Great Lakes.
According to project developer Randy D. Podolsky, opening a marina at the Navy Pier has been discussed casually for decades. The marina project is being privately funded and is intended to bring the benefits of economic growth the city, additional jobs and exposure for the Navy Pier........

Missouri River Near Rockport, Missouri Corps Closes Three Levee Breaches......
Over the weekend, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District was able to close three breaches within the Missouri River Levee System L-550 located near Missouri River Miles 524 and 525 near Rockport, Missouri.
Officials say that these are the third, fourth and fifth breaches to be closed under the current contract with Weston Solutions, Inc. of West Chester, PA.
The Corps says that now, there are only two remaining outlet breaches along the L-550 system. Outflow breaches are where flood waters upstream broke through the levee to rejoin the Missouri River........

Mississippi River At Louisiana, Missouri Champ Clark Bridge Interpretive Panel Dedication Ceremony Next Week.......
Next week, the final piece of the old and new Champ Clark Bridge will be revealed to the public during a dedication ceremony for an interpretive panel celebrating the spans.
With the interpretive panel's dedication, officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation and Massman Construction Company will be completing their work on the bridge spanning the Mississippi River between the two Pike Counties.
The interpretive panel, which was designed by Hannibal and Pittsfield high school students, contains pieces from the original bridge and has been installed in Louisiana's Riverview Park........

Inland Waterways Spending Bill Funds Waterways and Maritime Programs......
In December, President Trump signed two large spending bills that include significant budgets for ongoing inland waterways construction and maintenance, as well as port dredging and maintenance.
Included in the fiscal 2020 spending package was $7.65 billion for the civil works mission of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who manages the inland waterways system and port dredging.
The Corps' Operations and Maintenance account also saw an increase to $2.68 billion, which is $1.37 billion more than President Trump requested, and $498 million more than this year's spending level........

Live Aboard News From New York City NYC Planning To Expand Houseboat Marina......
The City of New York is planning on spending $90 million to expand a marina mostly used by houseboats.
The proposal from the Parks Department is intended to restore the Upper West Side's 79th Street Boat Basin, which will allow more people to live aboard their boats year-round.
The funding would be used to reconstruct docks damaged by storms, increase the number of docks from five to nine and make the marina more resistant to weather changes........

Illinois River Near Hardin, Illinois Farmers In Limbo After Nutwood Levee Breach........
Back on June 4th, the Illinois River breached the Nutwood levee, inundating hundreds of acres of farmland near Hardin, Illinois.
While the water has receded from the farmland for the most part, last spring's flooding has left behind long-term aftereffects for farmers and the Nutwood community.
Farmer Jeff Fraley is trying to determine what to do about the damaged and destroyed grain bins on his property, as an independent engineer hired by his insurance comapny has declined his claim........

On Saturday, the Audubon Eagle Ice Festival at the Alton Visitors Center officially kicked off the bald eagle watching season.
Each winter, hundreds of bald eagles migrate to the Alton and Grafton region, and events such as the Audubon Eagle Ice Festival are a great way for eagle watchers to see the majestic birds.
The Audubon Eagle Ice Festival is just one of the dozens of eagle-themed events in the St. Louis Region over the next several months........

Mississippi River At Clarksville, Missouri Millions Of Dollars May Be Headed To Clarksville For Flood Fighting Efforts........
Clarksville, Missouri may soon be seeing an influx of millions of dollars intended to help out with their future flood fighting efforts.
For several decades, Clarksville has had to fight floods when the Mississippi River rises. According to Mayor Jo Anne Smiley, downtown Clarksville is the first to see flooding.
Nine floods have affected Clarksville since 2008. Back in September, the tiny town was awarded a federal grant of $700,000 for a movable floodwall.......

Illinois Flood Preparedness Officials: Now Is The Time To Prep For Possible Floods.......
Illinois State officials are saying that the time is now to prepare for potential spring flooding. The largest disaster in the state during 2019 was the flooding that affected over 33 counties.
Rachel Torbert with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources says that it could happen again. She adds that they will be hosting events across the state to answer flood insurance questions.
Residents living in communities that are participating in the National Flood Insurance Program will be able to buy federally backed flood insurance, or they may contact their private insurance agent........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois The Eagle Ice Festival Is Saturday.......
On Saturday, the Audubon Center in West Alton and the Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau will be partnering up to host the annual Alton-Audubon Eagle Ice Festival.
The public is invited out to meet and greet with experts at the region's eagle watching hot spots Saturday to get a look at bald eagles as they migrate south.
The event will begin at the Audubon Center at Riverlands in West Alton at 10 am and will run until 2 pm. In Alton, there will be games, prizes and wood and ice sculpting in the parking lot behind the Visitor's Center.........

Missouri River Near Maryland Heights, Missouri STL County Opposes Maryland Heights Flood Plain TIF Plan.......
Friday evening, St. Louis County Executive Sam Page's representatives effectively blocked plans for using $151 million in subsidies to encourage development in some 2,200 acres of flood-prone land adjacent to the Missouri River.
The Maryland Heights City Council may still approve the TIF. The vote considerably limits what a TIF that Maryland Heights officials approve can pay for.
Paul Hampel, advisor to St. Louis County Executive Sam Page, says that the current approach of using TIF for developing a large green space that is also a flood plain is not a plan that they will support........

Upper Missouri River Power Generation From Upstream Dams Up During 2019........
There was one good thing to come from the wet weather that caused the flooding issues across the Midwest during 2019, electric power generation from the six upstream dams was up 5.6 percent.
This was the first time this century that the Missouri River had back-to-back years of producing surplus power.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who manages the dams and reservoirs along the river, power generation from the six upstream dams was 13 billion kilowatt hours, up from 12.3 billion kilowatt hours in 2018........

Rock River Near Dixon, Illinois Body Of Missing Angler Recovered From The River.......
The Lee County Coroner reports that the body of a missing Oregon angler has been recovered from the Rock River, a tributary of the Mississippi River, near Dixon, Illinois.
James Swift and another fisherman presumably drowned further upstream near Oregon, Illinois on November 20th.
Poor weather conditions prevented responders from recovering the bodies. Police report that one of the bodies was located approximately 1 mile from the Oregon Dam, but water currents shifted and they were not able to retrieve him........

Kaskaskia River Near Carlyle Lake Carlyle Lake Increasing Water Releases........
As of Tuesday morning, the pool elevation of Carlyle Lake was 446.36 feet, with a 4,790 cubic feet per second.
With the current precipitation on the ground, the lake was expected to crest under 447 feet on Wednesday.
In order to free up water storage space in the lake, downstream releases were increased on New Year's Eve of 5,500 cfs, with a maximum release of 7,000 cfs expected by Monday........

Missouri Levees Report: The Levees Need Some Work........
According to a report released by an advisory group appointed by Missouri Governor Mike Parson, the state's levees need to be bolstered and repaired, primarily in rural areas hard hit by this year's flooding.
Dru Buntin, the deputy director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources says that rebuilding in flood-prone areas has resulted in repeated damage. The Flood Recovery Advisory Working Group looked at past floods and noted the problem areas.
The group recommends that state and federal agencies support levee district projects that focus on reducing the constriction of the river during flooding........

More Missouri Levees Column: Give The Rivers Room To Roam........
On Friday the Maryland Heights TIF Commission will be deciding whether to provide $151 million in tax incentives on flood plain development and David Stokes is hoping that the Commissioners consider what is going on in the Northwest corner of the state.
Tiny Atchison County had spent the majority of 2019 underwater. The majority of the farms in that county, which is along the Missouri River, are still not usable due to the extended flooding.
A state panel that had been studying flooding in Missouri came up with the recommendation that some levees in Atchison County should be relocated away from the river, giving it room to roam........

The personal watercraft segment of the boating industry is in it's eighth consecutive year of growth as they continue to change the expectations of who they are built for and their intended use.
A big part of what is driving the sales increase in PWCs is that manufacturers are working hard on redesigning what a PWC can do.
Yamaha WaterCraft general manager Bryan Seti says that they believe it is time to make customers look at PWCs differently and change the mindset of what can be done with the watercraft........

Mississippi River At Louisiana, Missouri Teen Injured In Fall From Champ Clark Bridge.......
Authorities report that a Louisiana, Missouri teenager is recovering after he "intentionally fell" from the Champ Clark Bridge.
The Louisiana Police Department report that just before 6 pm Monday, an unidentified 17 year old was walking along the span over the Mississippi River, when he fell to the bluffs below the bridge.
The teenager sustained serious injuries in the fall and was airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment. Police have not said what led to the teenager falling, but his actions were intentional........

Boating Mishaps Near Miami, Florida Four Injured In New Year's Boat Crash.......
Shortly after midnight on New Year's Day, four people were injured when a 42 foot HCB center console ran aground on a jetty in Dania Beach, Florida.
Broward County Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Kyle Vanbuskirk reported that a woman was ejected from the boat, landing about a foot and a half from the water, semiconscious.
Reportedly the woman sustained a head injury, and was treated by paramedics until ground crews could take her to the hospital. The other passengers were hospitalized as well and all are expected to survive........

Mississippi River Near Memphis, Tennessee Settlement Set In Lawsuit Over 2 Crewmembers That Died During Towboat Sinking.......
A settlement was recently agreed upon by the families of two men that died aboard a towboat that sank in the Mississippi River two years ago.
The towboat sank in the Mississippi River in December of 2017. Searchers recovered the boat and body of 19 year old deckhand Anquavious Jamison. Captain Keith Pigram's body was never recovered.
The surviving family members filed the lawsuit after NTSB reports revealed that the company and crew knew of a flooding issue with the towboat for several months........

Missouri Flood Preparation Advisory Group Calls For Improved Flood Protection In Missouri.......
According to an advisory group appointed by Missouri Governor Mike Parson, the state's levees must be repaired and strengthened especially in rural areas hit hard by 2019's prolonged flooding.
On Tuesday, the Flood Recovery Advisory Working Group released their report on ways to handle flooding across the state and improve flood recovery. Back in July, Parson signed an executive order that created the 24 member advisory group.
The advisory group found that state and federal agencies should be supporting levee district projects aimed at reducing river constriction during times of flooding. The group supports efforts like in Atchison County in Northwestern Missouri, where they are moving levees further back from the Missouri River........

Mississippi River At Memphis, Tennessee Skiers Take To The River For Charity.......
While the temperatures were a bit chilly for a day on the water, a group of water skiers took to the Mississippi River at Memphis for the 43rd Annual Ski Freeze.
The annual Ski Freeze benefits the Dream Factory of Memphis, which makes dreams come true for critically and chronically ill kids aged 3 to 18.
Brian Juengling says that the event typically nets around $25,000. The cost of the average dream is $3,500 to $4,000.........

Mississippi River Water Quality Water Quality Sensor Attached To Steamboat Gathers Information Along The Mississippi River.......
A data gathering sensor has been attached to the American Queen steamboat and is intended to give scientists and cities a better look at water quality as it travels the length of the Mississippi River.
There are approximately 3,700 sensors already placed along the river, however, officials say that the device aboard the American Queen will help identify areas where nitrogen from farms, lawns and sewage systems affect water quality.
The sensor aboard the steamboat will collect water temperatures, levels of turbidity, oxygen and nitrates as well as other data every five minutes. The data is then forwarded to state and federal researchers and stakeholders for analysis........

Upper Missouri River Ice Jam Causing Flooding Along The Upper Missouri River.......
An ice jam along the Upper Missouri River in Morton County, North Dakota is causing the river levels to rise, threatening property along the shoreline.
According to Emergency Manager Tom Doering, the ice jam is sitting near the Grant Marsh Bridge and water in a nearby tributary is up 18 inches over the past 24 hours.
Officials in Morton County say that they are working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to hold off planned increases in releases from the Garrison Dam until the ice jam clears.........

Historic Flooding In The St. Louis Region Take A Look Back At The Flooding During The Last Week Of 2015.......
During the last week of 2015, the rainfall came hard and fast, dumping nearly 10 inches of water in some parts of the St. Louis region. By the time the rains stopped, St. Louis' record for annual rainfall had been broken.
The Mississippi and Missouri Rivers swelled, inundating portions of St. Charles County and threatening the levee protecting the Portage Des Sioux region. Hundreds of volunteers turned out to sandbag the River Des Peres.
The areas that were affected the most were Union, Pacific, Eureka, Arnold and other areas within the Meramec River Basin, where the river crested higher than ever along the St. Louis County border. Over 2,000 homes and businesses in the area were flooded, causing millions of dollars in damage........

Spring Flooding Outlook Flooding Concerns Remain High.......
The National Weather Service is keeping a wary eye on an above-normal chance for flooding in 2020 along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers mainly due to ground saturation.
At a time that Missouri River levels are typically running low, some parts of the Missouri River are slightly above flood stage.
Mark Fuchs, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service says that both the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers dropped below flood stage in early fall, but they went back up with rain in both basins.........

Mississippi River In The Riverbend It's Time For Bald Eagle Season.......
This coming week, bald eagle watchers from across he nation will start migrating to the Riverbend region as the Bald Eagles start arriving in the area.
Free Bald Eagle shuttle tours have begun, and will run through March. They depart from Pere Marquette State Park Visitor Center. Additional tours will depart from the Alton Visitor Center, as well as The Audubon Center in West Alton.
The free Bald Eagle shuttle tours will start with an educational video, stops at two or three active nests and a lunch stop in Hardin........

Lower Mississippi River Valley Mississippi Sues Corps, Miss River Commission Over Spillway Activation.......
The State of Mississippi has filed suit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Mississippi River Commission, asserting that the intrusion of freshwater into the Mississippi Sound from repeated openings of the Bonnet Carre Spillway illegal.
Mississippi's Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann stated that it is his duty to protect the state's land, water and resources. He adds that the freshwater infiltrating the Mississippi Sound is a result of the spillway's opening and has caused damage to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The lawsuit specifically seeks a temporary injunction ordering the Corps to operate the Bonnet Carre Spillway in conjunction with the Morganza Spillway to mitigate damage along the Mississippi Gulf Coast........
