Asian Carp Update

Illinois River

Anglers Catch Carp As Officials Debate Great Lakes' Defenses........

Even as Illinois State and federal officials debate costly measures to prevent the invasive Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes, anglers along the Illinois River are catching as many of the nuisance fish as they can.

Currently, unreliable electric barriers in the Illinois River near Romeoville are serving as the final fortification blocking the carp from entering the Great Lakes.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has been testing alternative methods to block the carp's advance, including using loud noises to "herd" carp into the commercial fishermen's nets........

Joachim Creek Near Herculaneum, Missouri

Mo Giving Away A Bridge, But With A Catch........

After 84 years of carrying Route 61 traffic over Joachim Creek into Herculaneum, Missouri, the Great Depression-era truss bridge has arrived at the end of the road.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is offering the public the opportunity to own this bridge, free of charge, but there is a catch:  The new owner will either have to maintain the span, or pay to relocate it.

Reportedly, there are plenty of federal grants a potential owner can apply for to get up to 80 percent of the price the state would pay for demolishing the span.......

Mississippi River Management

USGS Working TO Save The Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer........

The United States Geological Survey will be working on gathering specific data on the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer, and considering ways to recharge the aquifer.

Currently, the Mississippi Alluvial Plain project, which was started in 2017, is in a dual data gathering phase.  The first phase is a monitoring network organized via a task force within the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, which collects water data through a voluntary metering program.  The USGS is collecting additional data on a real-time basis at 20 sites.

The second phase of data collection will involve being able to better understand the hydrological makeup of the MRVAA.  The aquifer spans south from Cape Girardeau, Missouri to Natchez, Mississippi, and across portions of Arkansas, western Tennessee and eastern Louisiana.

Researchers are using methods similar to a Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan to determine what the aquifer is made of, particularly the texture of the subsurface material that water flows through.  The texture of that subsurface material determines how easily water flows through it........

Aquifer

An aquifer is an underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock, rock fractures or unconsolidated materials (gravel, sand, or silt). Groundwater can be extracted using a water well. The study of water flow in aquifers and the characterization of aquifers is called hydrogeology. Related terms include aquitard, which is a bed of low permeability along an aquifer,[1] and aquiclude (or aquifuge), which is a solid, impermeable area underlying or overlying an aquifer. If the impermeable area overlies the aquifer, pressure could cause it to become a confined aquifer

Ice Formation Expected To Be Delayed........

Above average temperatures are causing a delay on the ice formation on the Upper Missouri River near Bismarck, North Dakota.  The National Weather Service in Bismarck reports that the higher temperatures are expected to run through the end of December.

By the third week in December, the Upper Missouri River is usually iced over.  This year, however, the ice-over might not occur until some time in January.

Ice cover on the lakes in the region will be thinner than normal for this time of year, which will impact safe recreation on these bodies of water........

U.S. Coast Guard personnel are working to determine possible environmental and waterway impacts caused by the fuel spill.

Late last Friday, the Coast Guard said that Clean Harbors, an oil response organization, responded as well to help contain the diesel spill.  The cause of the vessel's sinking is still under investigation........

Hi Bill!

Hello Everyone!

I been working on an island and learning the ways of the sounds and seas. Stopping in Carrabelle has turned into blessing in disguise. I’m sure our twins whom will go nameless “that should be anonymous enough” would agree! A Bowline Knot is the most important knot to learn!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The bowline is an ancient and simple knot used to form a fixed 'eye' at the end of a rope. It has the virtues of being both easy to tie and untie; most notably, it is easy to untie after being subjected to a load. The bowline is sometimes referred to as King of the knots because of its importance. Wikipedia
Reward Offered For Information About Oil Spill........
The Bourbeuse River Clean Stream Team No.3 has posted a $1,000 reward for information about the person responsible for dumping oil into the river.
Missouri Conservation agent Ben Pursley said that on Saturday, November 24, he discovered the illegal spill while on a regular patrol.  Reportedly, around 20 gallons of used motor oil had been dumped into the river from a 55 gallon drum.
Crews with the Missouri Conservation Department worked to remove the oil from the Reiker Ford Conservation Area.  Pursley says that the drum and it's contents were intentionally dumped, and likely came from a mechanic's shop or another industrial facility........
After Bridge Completion, Focus Shifts To Flooding Issues........
On Saturday, officials attended the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Highway 47 Bridge spanning the Missouri River at Washington, Missouri, including State Representative Bart Korman and Warren County Commissioner Hubie Kluesner.
With the completion of the bridge project, officials want to shift the focus to the northern side of the Missouri River, as flooding shuts down access to Warren County.
Kluesner says that they need to come up with a way to keep the bridge open, even if the Missouri River floods.  Preliminary plans involve the construction of an elevated roadway that will allow access between Warren County and Washington during major flooding........
    Meramec River Near Eureka, Missouri
    Flooding, Dioxin Wiped Times Beach From The Map
On December 5, 1982, the tiny town of Times Beach was inundated by record breaking flooding along the Meramec River, which destroyed most of the town's homes.  This occurred approximately a month after residents learned of dangerous levels of dioxin in the town.
Times Beach was a bottomland town downstream from Eureka.  It was founded in the 1920s by the St. Louis Times newspaper as a weekend retreat of cottages.
The federal government determined that the dirt roads in Times Beach had been sprayed with oil contaminated by dioxin.  Eventually, the federal government purchased all of the properties in the town.  The land that was formerly Times Beach is now a state park........
Mississippi River Cruising
Historic 1920s Riverboat Returning To Cruising........
After being mothballed for a decade, the historic 285 foot long Delta Queen is getting ready to once again cruise the Mississippi and other rivers across the Heartland of America.  The vessel began operations in 1927 and has carried several presidents including Harry Truman and Jimmy Carter.  The Delta Queen  served as a Naval vessel during World War II, and has been designated as a National Historic Landmark.
Since 2008, the Delta Queen has been sidelined due to a federal law that barred overnight excursions aboard wooden vessels.  On Tuesday, President Trump signed legislation exempting the vessel from this law, with the provision that improvements be made to the vessel.
In 2020, the Delta Queen expects to be offering three, five and seven day cruises along the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Cumberland, Kanawha, Arkansas and Illinois Rivers.  Each year, the Delta Queen is expected to stop in more than 80 ports each year, including St. Louis, New Orleans, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Chattanooga........
News Release From BoatUS
Ethanol Misfueling Danger Laid Bare: Gas Pump Photos
"The ethanol industry doesn't want you to see these photos"
SPRINGFIELD, Va., Dec. 5, 2018 -- President Trump has officially moved to allow E15 (15 percent ethanol) gasoline sales year-round – a fuel prohibited for use in recreational boats and a decision that recreational boating groups say will needlessly put 142 million American boaters at risk. Protecting Boaters at the Gas Pump is a new website with a series of photos of gas station pumps in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin that clearly shows the challenges boaters face with poor ethanol warning labels at the pump, resulting in a greater risk of misfueling.
The effort is from the National Marine Manufacturers Association’s (NMMA), which was recently shared in “Boating United” campaign that urges recreational boat owners to tweet their members of Congress to stop the expansion of the government-mandated fuel. Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) supports the effort and is urging recreational boaters to share the website with friends:
https://spark.adobe.com/page/dYPx7SjouAr2k/
“The ethanol industry doesn’t want you to see these photos of gas pumps,” said BoatUS Manager of Government Affairs David Kennedy. “The confusion presented to consumers at the pump today is real. Putting the wrong fuel in your boat will likely void your engine’s warranty. We applaud NMMA for clearly showing the misfueling problem.”
E15 is currently banned for sale in many states by the Environmental Protection Agency during summer months over concerns that it contributes to smog on hot days. The push for more ethanol into the nation’s fuel supply is a result of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). When it was passed in 2005, RFS assumed that America’s use of gasoline would continue to grow. Since then, however, gasoline usage has not increased as forecast, which today forces more ethanol into each gallon of gas.
BoatUS has long had concerns over potential consumer misfueling with E15. Most recreational boaters refuel their vessels at roadside gas stations where pump-labeling requirements are minimal with just a small E15 orange warning label. The advocacy, services and safety group for recreational boaters is a member of Smarter Fuel Future, a coalition that aims to reform the RFS.
NMMA Calls For End Of Retaliatory Tariffs........
President Trump, Mexican President Nieto and Canadian Prime minister Trudeau formally signed the new NAFTA trade agreement, last week during the G20 summit in Buenos Aries, Argentina.
The agreement, officially called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, is lauded by the National Marine Manufacturers Association, it does not address the retaliatory tariffs on U.S. boats.
NMMA President Thom Dammrich and NMMA Canada President Sara Anghel responded to the signing of the trade deal by saying that it helps to ensure the future of manufacturing industries, but fails to address the U.S. tariffs on all aluminum and steel imports........
Amren Missouri's Bryan Vance, the Adopt-the-Shoreline coordinator, says that the volunteer groups removed some of the heaviest debris ever recorded in a cleanup effort.
This fall's cleanup was definitely needed, as volunteers removed some 15 tons more debris and trash from the shoreline than the previous year, including dilapidated dock parts, wooden decking and heavy, waterlogged encapsulated floats........
 Sail From Palisades to Grafton
Click pic to enlarge
The Pictures of Yesteryears on this day in 2012...... were sent to us by Capt'n Mike Costello
Saturday we put together 9 sailboats and sailed from Palisades to Grafton. We had Lunch at the Ruebel Restaurant. They have great food and a restored bar from the 1904 World's Fair, very impressive. Grafton is always fun and all the restaurants and stores always appreciate the business. After that we strolled down and got an ice cream before we headed back to our boats. Yes, eating ice cream in December on the streets of Grafton, sweet. It was 72 degrees. The breezes picked up considerably on the way back and we all rolled into our harbors about dusk. It was a great day.
Thanks Barry for putting it together for us. Sandy Costello snapped the photos of Matt Flerlage’s boat, Tuesdays Child with the colorful Genoa. Denny Swandt is crewing for him.
 05 December, 1963 in River History
Three painters from the Star Sign Co. began painting their version of the Piasa Bird on a bluff that overlooks the Mississippi River above Alton. A few weeks, prior, crews from the Hellrung Construction Company worked to prepare the bluff for paint. They had to remove close to a half ton of rock from the surface of the bluff, and then the 2,500 square foot area received a base coat. The painting replaced a previous duplication of Piasa Bird that had been removed during the construction of the Great River Road........
It was repainted on a steel plate in 1984 and hung from the bluff like a sign.
The current version of the Piasa Bird was painted on bluff in 1999.
NMMA Against EPA's 2019 Ethanol Requirements........
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released their final blended fuel volume levels for 2019.  This is known as the Renewable Volume Obligation under the Renewable Fuel Standard, which is requiring 15 billion gallons of ethanol to be blended into the nation's fuel supply during 2019.
The National Marine Manufacturers Association has voiced their strong opposition to the EPA's proposal in meetings and in public comments prior to this official announcement.  The NMMA has vowed to keep working with stakeholders in order to protect consumers from fuels containing high levels of ethanol.
NMMA President Thomas Dammrich says that the EPA's announcement on Friday reinforces that consumers are an afterthought under the current Renewable Fuel Standard.  He adds that the 2019 RVO places Americans at risk, as most consumers are aware of the dangers posed by high-ethanol fuel blends like E15........
News Release From BoatUS
Engine Cutoff Switch Requirement and 5-Year Vessel Documentation Included in Passage of Coast Guard Authorization Act
SPRINGFIELD, Va., December 4, 2018 – Each year Congress authorizes the budget and overall spending level for the U.S. Coast Guard, which can have a direct effect on recreational boaters. Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) applauds today’s passage of The Frank Lobiondo Coast Guard Authorization of Act of 2018, which offers new safety and consumer-friendly benefits for boaters, anglers and sailors.
Included in the reauthorization is a provision requiring “manufacturers, distributors and dealers” to install engine cutoff switches on new boats “less than 26 feet overall in length and capable of developing 115 pounds or more of static thrust.” The engine cutoff switch provision “includes, but is not limited to, inboard engines, outboard motors and sterndrive engines.” Switches also need to meet American Boat and Yacht Council Standards.
For those who document their vessel with the U.S. Coast Guard National Vessel Documentation Center, the length of time the certificate will be valid increases from one to five years, easing a boater’s paperwork burden.
“Cutoff switches save lives,” said BoatUS Manager of Government Affairs David Kennedy. “And making recreational-vessel documentation renewal easier by now requiring it only once every five years is a consumer-friendly move. We thank the leadership of Sen. John Thune, Sen. Bill Nelson, Rep. Bill Shuster and Rep. Peter DeFazio for their efforts in securing this vital reauthorization.”
Hannibal's Riverfront Project Officially Begins........
On Monday morning, the City of Hannibal officially began their multi-million dollar riverfront renovation project with a ground breaking ceremony using gold-painted shovels.
This official groundbreaking ceremony was held even as heavy equipment was hard at work just over 100 yards away in what used to be Nipper Park.
Ron Herring
Ron Herring passed away sometime over the weekend, we will be having a celebration of life at some point which will inform you of.
Ron has been a boater our of Woodland for almost 30 years. His latest boat was “Steel” which he enjoyed with his other half Penny (she passed away 2 years ago).
Here is about the only picture I could find of him which is great since he’s holding a Riverbills sticker.
