Hi Bill,

Well Ginger’s First open water!

Made it to LuLu’s. Powder is making a lot of friends here.

We encountered 1 1/2’ seas hitting starboard for the Mobile Bay crossing. As soon as we hit the ICW “intracostal waterway” headed east with the wind and waves at our stern.  We gained 400 rpm and 2 miles per hour without touching the throttles. Ahead you see the ICW. Aft you see the bay. No land in site!

Hi Bill,

Don’t tell Mom but Powder likes Rum! The forward armor on Ginger is complete.

We stayed Thursday night at the Mobile convention center. What? A duck boat! Overloaded with the bow down. Sorry you will never catch me on one. We headed out toward the Gulf! Sea foam and fins. Yes our first Dolphins this trip. Also Powder got to see some birds close up around the boat and she got excited. At Dog River Marina tonight. They let you stay a night free with electric if you get 50 gallons of fuel! Great deal. Headed toward Pensacola Florida Tomorrow. We are a little low on fuel to get to Carrabelle. But still moving forward. If anyone would like to help out we set up a GoFundMe account. The link is above. Any help will be paid forward again and used to help others along the way!

Noise Ordinance Makes Former "Gentleman's Agreement" Enforceable........

According to Grafton Mayor Ric Eberlin, Grafton's new noise ordinance takes a former "gentleman's agreement" and makes it official and enforceable.

Eberlin says that the majority of Grafton's businesses do not host loud music after 11 pm due to the business district being close to residential areas.

The 11 pm curfew on loud music is in effect seven days a week and there is no difference between weekends and weekends.  Eberlin said that the ordinance is a preventative measure to give law enforcement some teeth........

The Pictures of the Day ..... were sent to us by Capt'n Ramjet from Pool 26 of the Mississippi River, now traveling south to southern Florida....

Hi Bill,

The last 2 days were full on excitement. Starting with getting unlocked to the world. With a RiverBills sticker sighting in the lock. When the doors open you know the whole world is your back yard. A 3 wide 1 whistle pass in a 200’ wide channel. 2 separate 3X5 tows and us. I know I’ve earned their respect word got out about us. And after the 3rd one called me Skipper and asked if Maryann was around I got it. We all LOAO!

The first bridge we had to have raised. I realized Ch13 bridge to bridge means 2 things. Shortly after that bridge I heard a noise! I thought it was all over. I ran outside to see 2 fighter jets low deck above the tree line cooking passed us. 1 Port, 1 Starboard. They went vertical crossed each others path and where gone! What an unbelievable RUSH! We have made it to the land of giants Mobile Alabama. We feel real safe here. Took a walk to town with Powder. Man she loved it. I told her please don’t poop on the cop. Currently moored at the convention center. Weather permitting we head into the bay Friday am.

So hello to all our RiverBill river rats from where the rivers meet the sounds and seas.

Fall Colors Predictions......Missouri Department of Conservation foresters update "Fall Color" reports weekly from mid-September through early-November.

  St. Louis Region:
We finally have some fall weather, but it seems we’ve been in a holding pattern for fall color this week. In most areas there was little change, and most wooded areas are mostly green, except for the early-changing species such as white ash, dogwoods, sassafras, persimmon, walnut, sumacs, spicebush, Virginia creeper, poison ivy, and some hickories and maples. A stretch of sunny warmer days with cool nights should help us see some good color on the oaks when they begin to turn. We expect to see the color peak around the end of October or early November, barring any extreme weather events such as a hard freeze.

Fall Color Hot Spots
The bright cool days coming up will give us a good opportunity to get out and hike, float, or just enjoy the early colors of trees and fall wildflowers! Consider visiting areas like Castlewood and Meramec State Parks or Hughes Mountain, Huzzah, Logan, and Pacific Palisades Conservation Areas.

Click here for the latest information about the "Fall Colors" forecast.

Fishy Tales From The Gulf Of Mexico

Shrimp Boat Crew Reels In Package Of Cocaine........

This week, a crew on a 90 foot shrimp boat caught something in their net that was more than what they expected, a package that appears to be cocaine.

The package has writing in Spanish on it as well as the image of a horse head.  The boat crew was initially unsure what the package was, but after opening it, they discovered the white powdery substance.  They then reported their catch to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The crew wasn't fishing for shrimp, but instead were doing site clearance work in the Gulf off the coast of Grand Isle, Louisiana.  The task involves dragging nets along the sea bottom after an oil rig is decommissioned to guarantee debris isn't left behind........

Plans For New Mississippi River Port Proceeding........

Back in 2014, officials proposed constructing a new port along the Mississippi River in Lincoln County, Missouri.  Now, the plan is finally moving forward.

The proposal would transform some 6,500 acres of what is now mostly farmland near Winfield, Missouri into a multi-million dollar complex.

The facility would feature shipping and trucking facilities, as well as railroad lines.  Construction on the project is expected to begin within the next year........

Man Rescued From Sinking Vessel........

On Monday, three workers at Mississippi River Lock and Dam No.16 leapt into action and saved a man's life.  Shortly after Mike Verre arrived at work he received a vessel in distress call on the radio.  Reportedly, a sailboat had collided with the dam.

The man that made the distress call was trapped inside his sailboat, which lock workers reported had sailed into the dam after it's anchor broke.  Assistant Lock Master Steve Mosley says that the man was doing some work in the vessel and didn't realize he was in trouble until the boat struck the dam.

Mosley took over the distress call, and called for help. Mosley sent Verre and Chase Ellsworth to make the rescue.  Once arriving at the boat, Chase jumped aboard the sinking vessel and pulled the man to safety.  Verre noted that the man was quite shaken, but thankful for the rescue........

Hi Bill,

Monday the 15th we filled up in Demopolis. The Terah Huchabee was getting an oil change. I had to ask. WOW! 300-400 gallons of oil. Then the Demopolis Lock. It has beautiful waterfalls. It’s Tuesday now.

Nice sailboat with an awesome flag. We didn’t have time to stop for one.

We were informed by a pair of excellent and well respected captains. “that should be anonymous enough LOL” to stop taking on water. I’m pretty sure we are talking about the weight issue. So we are changing our GoFundMe campaign to what every person needs when 90% of all the restrooms are gone. $ for $ paper towels and fuel. We are little short of our needs to get there so help would be greatly appreciated!

1851 Law Cited In Duck Boat Accident Suit, Firms Seek Mediation........

The two companies that are facing multiple lawsuits stemming from a tourist boat sinking on Table Rock Lake, claiming the lives of 17 people have invoked an 1851 law that allows vessel owners to attempt to avoid or limit legal damages as they also try to negotiate settlements with the victims' family members.

The motion was filed on Monday by attorneys for Ripley Entertainment Inc., based in Orlando, Florida and Branson Duck Vehicles of Branson.  The filing was made in federal court in Western Missouri, where there are multiple lawsuits pending.

Tia Coleman, an accident survivor and lawyers for other victims' families denounced the filing.  A Philadelphia lawyer representing victims' families, Robert Mongeluzzi says that they intend to legally and factually demolish the company's claims........

Mississippi River has Crested........

As of 5am Wednesday morning:

Saverton.... crested

Louisiana... crested

Clarksville.. crested

Winfield..... crested

Grafton...... crested

Alton......... crested

What does "Crested" mean....

The National Weather Service defines a crest is the highest point in a wave. In the case of river flooding, it is the highest stage or level of a flood wave as it passes a particular point. Gauges along the river record the level of the water, and the highest level recorded at each gauge will be the crest for that gauge.

Great Rivers Land Trust’s GRLT) primary objective is preservation of scenic and ecologically valuable land along the Great River Road between Alton, Illinois and Pere Marquette State Park. GRLT has been successful in land conservation efforts in Illinois and has expanded into Missouri.

GRLT’s land preservation efforts are accomplished through easements and/or land acquisitions. GRLT protects forests, bluffs, parks, prairies, farmland, and wetlands in perpetuity for the benefit of current and future generations.

For more than twenty years GRLT has become a leader in land protection and has been active in improving communities through a variety of open space protection and enhancement projects.

About the Meeting of the Rivers

America’s great rivers, the Mississippi, the Illinois and the Missouri, meet in a broad floodplain bordered by majestic 150 foot limestone bluffs – geology that dates back more than 250 million years.

The Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway, locally known as the Great River Road, traverses for 15 miles between the Mississippi River and the bluffs from Alton, Illinois to Grafton, Illinois.

The route is lush with forest and prairie attracting rare species such as the Bald eagle, American white pelican and a variety of other migratory birds. This section of the river runs east to west with the tree lines of Missouri providing a magnificent landscape for sunrise and sunset.

Residents and tourists revere the splendor by car, bicycle or boat. GRLT protects the lands along this beautiful stretch of the Mississippi.

October 17, 2013 in River History

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started the task of reopening all public facilities and recreation areas that were closed due to the government shutdown.

This included the National Great Rivers Museum at the Melvin Price Lock and Dam and recreational facilities at area Corps of Engineers lakes. The Lock and Dams on the Mississippi River remained open.

The United States federal government entered a shutdown on October 1, 2013 and curtailed most routine operations after Congress failed to enact legislation appropriating funds for fiscal year 2014. The shut down ended on October 16, 2013 after House and Senate voted to reopen the government.

Missouri Flooding

Missouri River Falling.... Mississippi River Cresting....

Even as the level of the Missouri River is falling, the Mississippi River is rising in eastern Missouri.  The National Weather Service is predicting that the Mississippi River will crest in Hannibal early Tuesday over 8 feet above flood stage.

The floodwalls are expected to be closed in St. Louis and Cape Girardeau even as the river crests in St. Louis on Tuesday and on Friday in Cape Girardeau.  No serious flooding is expected in either city.

The Missouri Department of Transportation reports that there are better than 50 roads closed across the state, primarily in the northeastern portion of the state.  The water levels are falling quickly along the Missouri River, easing pressure on the levees........

Flooding In The Riverbend

High Water Causing Detours, Ferry Closure........

Flooding along the Illinois and Mississippi River has caused some road closures and detours.  The Brussels Ferry was closed down over the weekend, and will remain so due to Illinois River flooding.

The intersection of Illinois Routes 100 and 3 in Grafton is affected when the river levels rise.  The majority of Grafton's businesses will remain open.  It is suggested that visitors call ahead to make sure their destination is open because there are detours in place.

Portions of Highway 94 in West Alton have been closed down due to flooding and there are detours in place........

Despite Riverbend Flood Warnings

Grafton Is Open For Business........

Heavy rainfall across the Upper Midwest causes flooding in points south.  In St. Charles County, roads are closed due to high water, but many residents are prepared, as they live in elevated houses and have boats parked in their yard.

Across the river in Grafton, the Mississippi River has been rising as well.  The Brussels Ferry is closed and warning signs are set up a few miles down the road.  Store owners say that the signs are misinterpreted by visitors that believe that Grafton is closed.  Business owners say that there are no floodwaters in Grafton, and the majority of the town is dry.

Crews are spending their time setting up for this weekend's Grafton Rendezvous, which is a gathering of re-enactors that portray life in the 1800s.  Officials have had to move the rendezvous to higher ground once flood waters set in.  Rendezvous participant Jim Roman says that he wants people to know that they can come out and have a good time........
