Hi Bill,

South Bound Again!

We reached the top of the hill. It’s as if you can see the divide in the water and your headed downhill hill. The Jamie Whitten Lock. “84’ down” the Lock Master Said. The divide was 414’ above sea level. We are now less than 300’ above the sea. Amazingly there was a RiverBills sticker sighting in the lock. And last but not least we hurry up and wait!

Michael shows up in our path. We are currently on the NW edge of the dark green. So Godspeed. All is well and “Ginger G” doing very well.

Flooding In Missouri

Flooding Threatens To Top Levees, Closes Roads........

Thanks to heavy rainfall across Missouri, river levels have risen, threatening homes and businesses in low-lying areas as well as closing down roadways.

The Missouri River and other streams are flooding in northwestern Missouri, and the Mississippi River is quickly rising, especially in the northeastern portion of Missouri.

According to Mark Fuchs with the National Weather Service, additional rainfall won't worsen the predicted river crests, but it will lengthen the duration of the flooding.........

Mississippi, Missouri, or Big Muddy: What’s in a Name?

Presentation by author Dean Klinkenberg, “The Mississippi Valley Traveller”

Why do we call the river in the middle of the country “Mississippi”? Shouldn’t the name Missouri really carry forward to the Gulf, at least until it meets the Ohio River? Let’s talk river names with travel writer Dean Klinkenberg.

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Parks Department Makes Short Work Out Of Flood Preparation........

Years of frequent flooding have helped the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department to develop protocols for preparing for the rising Mississippi River.

Andy Dorian, the Parks Department Director says that they pretty much have flood preparation down to a science.  He notes that they don't panic anymore, and that they moved things like picnic tables and trash cans from the river side of the floodwall.

The Parks Department's focus is initially on the riverfront and rec center, however, Dorian says that they also look at flood prone places, and make sure that anything that can be damaged is moved.  He notes that when major flooding occurs, they don't have many issues outside of cleaning up since they planned ahead of time........

Officials with the Marshall County Emergency Management Agency announced that a search for a missing boater on Kentucky Lake has been called off.

The Marshall County Emergency Management Agency Director Curt Curtner said that they were alerted at around 11:30am about a man that went missing after his small fishing boat sank near Lighthouse Landing and Kentucky Dam Marina.

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Hannibal's Floodgates Have Been Installed........

By the end of the week, the level of the Mississippi River at Hannibal is expected to crest close to 24 feet, classifying this flood as major.  On Monday, crews installed all 5 of Hannibal's floodgates.

Flood stage in Hannibal is at 16 feet.  Marion County Emergency Management Director John Hark says that even though the river may not make it to the floodgates, high river levels can overwhelm the city's storm sewers.

Hark adds that if he is going to error, he will do it on the side of safety.  If the floodgates are installed, but there is no water behind them, it's ok.  If they aren't installed and water rises far enough, it is too late and that isn't going to happen........

Fishy Tales From Lake Michigan

Alligator Discovered In The Lake ........

Police in Waukegan, Illinois were taken aback when they were called out for reports of an alligator swimming around in Lake Michigan.  The caller reportedly sent in video evidence of the alligator.

David Castaneda states that he was kayaking around Lake Michigan at around 9:30 am, when he spotted the reptile.  He said he went closer to see if the animal was real, as he was not sure if it was a real alligator or a toy.

When responders arrived, they found a four foot American alligator swimming in the lake.  Staff with Larsen Marine Service and the Waukegan Police Animal Control unit captured the alligator and took it to the Wildlife Discovery Center........

Boat Gas News

President Looks To Lift Ban On Gasoline With Higher Ethanol Content...

According to a senior White House official, President Donald Trump is looking to lift a federal ban on the summer sales of higher ethanol blends of gasoline on Tuesday.

Currently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency prohibits the summer sales of gasoline blended with 15 percent ethanol due to smog concerns.

Since ethanol costs less than gasoline, the administration is hoping that the move will reduce retail gasoline costs, which are currently averaging $2.91/gallon.  This is over 40 cents higher than at this time last year........

Montara Boats Releases Surf Pontoon........

Montera Boats is pleased to introduce an industry first, a pontoon boat that you can surf behind.  Following considerable research and development, the company has developed a patent-pending design combining the attributes of a pontoon boat with an inboard surf boat's performance.

Montera CEO Mark Ocerbye says that over the past 15 years, he has watched people purchase tow boats for watersports and pontoon boats for entertaining, so he decided to develop a way to combine the different types of vessels, resulting in the Surf Boss, which can do it all.

The Surf Boss is available in three lengths, 21, 23 and 25 feet and is powered with PCM inboard engines.  the Surf Boss creates competitive surf wakes and features a fully enclosed head, more than 100 cubic feet of storage, large dual transom loungers and dual swiveling captains chairs........

Freight Handler Denies Polluting River With Salt........

A Peoria-based freight company and Morton Salt formally denied allegations of allowing toxic chemicals to contaminate areas near the Illinois River.

Back in July, the Illinois Attorney General's Office filed a complaint against the Peoria Barge Terminal and Morton Salt claiming that the pair improperly stored road salt in an industrial area in South Peoria in 2011 and 2012.

According to the complaint filed with the Illinois Pollution Control Board, these storage practices resulted in runoff with concentrations of toxins that in some cases were hundreds of times higher than established standads........

River History....

October 8, 2017 in River History

A bear trap failed on Ohio River Lock and Dam No.52 near Brookport, Illinois, and the resulting leak could have drained the pool, effectively shutting down navigation along the Ohio River.

A bear trap is basically a wall that keeps water on one side of the dam. One of the three bear traps at Lock and Dam No.52 was literally stuck down, allowing water to rush over it at 15 miles per hour.

Crews with the Choctaw Transportation Company dumped thousands of tons of boulders onto the failed bear trap to halt the flowing water........

Cape Nature Center's Kid's Fishing Pond Stocked With Tagged Fish........

The Missouri Department of Conservation has some special prizes in store for young anglers that fishi in the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center's kid's only fishing pond.

MDC fisheries biologists have tagged fish that were stocked into the pond, which gives young anglers a chance to win prizes for catching a fish.  Kids that catch a tagged fish may turn it in at the nature center for a prize.

Salvador Mondragon, MDC fisheries management biologist says that they have tagged bluegill, channel catfish, largemouth bass and redear sunfish.  When a child reels in one of these fish, they remove the tag, marked reward and a series of numbers, and turn it in for a prize, ranging from a t-shirt to basic fishing tackle........

Hi Bill,

Challenging Days!

Due to the season changing, currents from Florence and a couple repair delays. The work here at the Tennessee, Mississippi state line is coming to an end for the season. I’m currently working for a dock builder with just enough work to break even each day. Gas on shore is $1.25 cheaper than at the marinas so I’ve been shuttling gas 1/4 mile. We are facing the fact that we are slowly grinding to a halt. We had hoped to be in Florida by now. Any help would be “paid forward again”! The people we have met along the way have a spirit like ours. I have 2 job offers and some true river rats as references. I just need to get there healthy.

Public Advised To Avoid Bridge Construction Site........

Missouri officials have issued a warning to pedestrians and cyclists to stay off of the new Highway 47 Bridge construction site.

The warning comes after two cyclists were ordered off the span on Sunday.  According to Tim Hellebusch, the Missouri Department of Transportation resident engineer for the project, violators will be prosecuted, or worse, severely injured.

Reportedly, the cyclists snuck under the rope on the Warren County side of the span, and were halfway across the bridge when Hellebusch was notified.  He then contacted police.......

Seven Foot Boa Captured

Mississippi River Lock and Dam 13........

In recent days, an exotic snake which had been hanging around Lock and Dam 13 in Fulton, Illinois, garnered wide-spread attention when it was captured by Rock Island District employee Mark Nettles and handed over to the local Fish and Wildlife Office for proper care. Sightings of the 7-ft boa constrictor were reported earlier this summer but it wasn't until Wednesday when Nettles, who has experience handling snakes, was on his way to work and spotted the lethargic reptile. After it was captured, the snake was transported to the Fish and Wildlife office in Thomson, Illinois, where staff found it a home with a reptile educator in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Amren Strings New Power Line Across The River........

Amren Missouri uses a power generating facility in Venice, Illinois to supply a considerable amount of electricity to St. Louis, and crews recently used a helicopter to string a new power line across the Mississippi River.

According to Brandon Nickel, the new transmission project line was being installed to bring a new circuit into the north St. Louis area.  He adds that using a helicopter to pull the line across the river is the most efficient way to install it.

Nickel says that the $22 million project is intended to be a bit of an insurance policy, noting that if one of the circuits goes down in a storm, tornado or other catastrophe, power will still be provided via the other circuit........

Boat Manufacturer

Malibu Introduced Two New Inboard Engines........

During this week's International BoatBuilders' Exhibition and Conference, Malibu debuted two new inboard engines that the company is building for their Malibu and Axis brands.

The 400 HP M6DI will be installed in the 2019 Malibu 25 LSV and the 350 HP 5.3 M5DI will be offered in all Malibu and Axis boats for the 2020 model year.

According to Brett Michaud, test and validation engineer, they wanted to maintain quality control, and if they want to try to change something on the boat side to work with the engine, all they would have to do is to walk across the street........

Fall Colors Predictions......Missouri Department of Conservation foresters update "Fall Color" reports weekly from mid-September through early-November.

 St. Louis Region:
Beginning to turn

Despite the hotter than normal weather, fall color has definitely kicked off around the St. Louis area, with the outlying areas progressing farther than the St. Louis metro. Persimmon, sassafras, sumacs, Virginia creeper, walnut, and white ash, along with some hickories and maples, have turned or are starting to turn color. Areas that were more dry during the growing season are experiencing some early leaf drop, so you’ll also see some trees that are already bare. In most areas, the best color is still in our late-season wildflowers, such as native sunflowers, asters, and goldenrods. A return of cooler weather — especially cool nights — would help provide us with more vivid reds and purples, but that weather appears to be a week away.

Visit Rocheport, Missouri To See Incredible Fall Colors........

A tiny town nestled along the Missouri River boasts one of the most awe-inspiring scenes of fall colors.  The town has fewer than 250 residents, but hundreds of people visit the town to enjoy the colors, wine and antique shopping.

Rocheport was founded in the early 1800s as a trading post between white settlers and Native Americans.  The majority of the buildings in town date to the 1830s and are listed on the National Register of Historic places.

One of the more popular attractions in Rocheport is the Katy Trail, where the trees along the river bluff come alive with colors around mid-October.  Les Bourgeois Vineyards is perched atop the river bluffs and offers sweeping views of the canopy below........
