Mississippi River Near Granite City, Illinois

Swimmer Disappeared In The River Near The Chain Of Rocks........

The St. Louis Fire Department reports that responders have not been able to locate a man that had been swimming with friends in the Mississippi River when he disappeared near the Chain of Rocks Bridge.

Officials say that three friends were swimming from a small beach along the Illinois side of the river, when one went into the water and the others lost track of him.

The Fire Department had three boats in the water searching for the man who disappeared shortly after 5 pm.  The search was called off on account of darkness........

River History....

The Arabia Steamboat Museum in Kansas City.

September 5, 1856 in River History

The “Great White Arabia" sank on the Missouri River on Sept. 5, 1856 after hitting a jagged sycamore snag at Quindaro Bend, when she was less than one hour out of Kansas City. Ten minutes after hitting the snag she lay at the bottom of the Missouri River.
Since that area of the river was shallow at the time the upper decks stayed above the water. This allowed for the escape of all passengers and crew. The only casualty was a mule that was tied on the aft lower deck.
The steamboat was 188 feet long and had been operating on the Missouri River for only three years. She carried 130 passengers and some 200 tons of freight for 16 towns when she went down.
The steam boat was lost for 132 years. She was recovered in 1988 with remarkably preserved clothes, tools, guns, dishware and more that are now on display in the Arabia Steamboat Museum in Kansas City.

Robot Boat Completes Atlantic Crossing........

Over the summer, a small boat drifted across the whipped up Atlantic Ocean.  When it made it to the Irish coast, the vessel made history by becoming the first unmanned sailboat to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

On August 26, the SB Met, which was constructed by the Norwegian company, Offshore Sensing AS, crossed the finish line of the Microtransat Challenge some two and a half months after shoving off from Newfoundland.

This feat demonstrates that the unmanned boat technology is robust enough to handle extended missions, slashing expenses for ocean research, border security and surveillance in rough or remote waters........

Ameren Wraps Up Bagnell Dam Reinforcement Project........

Ameren announced that a crucial reinforcement project for the Bagnell Dam at the Lake of the Ozarks has been completed.  While the 87 year old dam is in fine shape, officials wanted to make sure it maintains it's strength for another hundred years.

For better than a year, crews have been working on the project.  They added scores of anchors that are sunken 60 feet into bedrock, strengthening the dam and keeping it in place.

Mike Hartwig of MC Industrial says that the improvements are intended to counter the uplift of water pressure under the dam which will prevent it from shifting........

News Release From BoatUS

Affordable 'Intro to Boating' course lets you experience recreational boating

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Sept. 4, 2018 – Want to learn the basics of powerboating or brush up on your skills? A partnership between the nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water, Fleet Boat Club and West Marine will bring an affordable on-water boat training course, “Intro to Powerboating,” to the club’s location at 1384 Empire Blvd., Rochester, on Saturday, Sept. 29. The course is three hours long, taught aboard 20- to 26-foot single-engine powerboats, and priced at $149. Class size is limited to four students per vessel, ensuring each student gets sufficient time at the helm under the watchful eye of a U.S. Coast Guard-certified instructor.
Boats are provided by Fleet Boat Club. The course is offered at 9 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Students will learn engine shifting and throttle control, steering, stopping and station holding, understand the “weathervane” effect and how to use “the boater’s eye” technique to safely navigate.
The goal of the course is to address the high costs typically associated with at-the-helm training, making hands-on boating education more accessible. It also offers area residents the chance to try out recreational boating and gives boaters the opportunity to improve their boat-handling skills.
Space is limited. Students must be 21 years or older. To sign up for any on-water training course from the BoatUS Foundation, go to www.BoatUS.org/On-Water.

Hi Bill,

We pulled up to this building in the lake to be greeted by some Tennessee Rebels! We tied off for the afternoon and hung out. A lot of people stopped by to enjoy the day you could walk around one of the floors in the water, climb up the stairs. Surprisingly clean with some excellent tags. Even a Riverbill’s sticker!

It also looks like taking our time will pay off with the potential hurricane in our path.

Well we pulled away late afternoon and are now nestled in a cove for the night. Current location mile marker 86 Kentucky Lake / Tennessee River.

A Bit of Kentucky Lake History

Danville Transfer Station

The structure is known as the Old Danville Grain Elevator as well as the Danville Wharf and Danville Transfer Station. It was built on the banks of the Tennessee River about 300 yards from the L&N Railroad in 1914. The purpose of the building was to transfer barges of grain and other goods from the river to railcars above.

It contained six levels with the bottom three being open for boats carrying cargo to unload their goods from the river. The lower levels accommodated the water level fluctuation of the river. Two twenty-horsepower elevators carried cargo from the lower levels to trains docked at the fourth level. Primary commodities were peanuts, grain, limestone, iron, and cotton.

It was in operation until the early 1940s when TVA began clearing out the area for the creation of Kentucky Lake

Family Placed Crosses To Warn Of Drowning Dangers........

There are several signs in Castlewood State Park warning of the dangers of swimming in the treacherous Meramec River, however, people still do.  Seven people have drowned in that portion of the Meramec River since 2007, including 2 deaths this year.

Over the Labor Day weekend, Danni Eickenhorst and her two sons, Cole and Jackson, decided to place white crosses on the beach in Castlewood State Park in order to heighten awareness and represent all victims of drowning in the park since the family moved to Ballwin more than a decade ago.

Eickenhorst says that the idea came from her youngest son, Cole.  He says that they were thinking that they needed to place something in order to alert people and make them think twice before hopping in the river and starting to swim.........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Two Injured After Powerboat Capsizes........

Saturday evening, two people were hospitalized after a powerboat overturned at the 1.3 Mile Marker on the Gravois Arm of the Lake of the Ozarks.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that 55 year old Troy Garison was operating a 2000 38 foot Cigarette southbound, reportedly too fast for conditions.  The vessel overturned, ejecting Garison and his passengers, 48 year old Dawn Briney and 38 year old Audra Erk into the water.

Witnesses report that the vessel was trying to avoid a PWC that had driven into it's path by turning sharply, causing the Cigarette to overturn.  Briney and Erk suffered moderate injuries and were transported to a hospital via ambulance.  Garison was reportedly unconscious in the water briefly, but the Water Patrol did not report his injuries........

A Look Back....  1912 Celebration Leads To River Tragedy

Mississippi River Near Hannibal, Missouri

....

Thursday, May 30, 1912, was Decoration Day in Hannibal, and may people chose to celebrate by taking boat trips along the Mississippi River.  A popular excursion was to motor up to Keokuk, Iowa to get a look at the progress on the hydroelectric power plant which was under construction.

Around 5:30 am that morning, printer Otey Kirtley, took his wife, Frankie Armilda (Leonard) Kirtley, young daughter Mary Dorthy Kirtley and Kirtley's print shop employee Crandall King on a skiff outing to Bay de Charles, just north of Hannibal.

As the two men rowed the skiff out in the river channel proper, they passed in front of the steamer Josh Cook and it's barges, which were banked along the wharf.  The skiff was capsized by the suction or undertow of the current, throwing all 4 people into the river.  All four lives were taken by the Mississippi River........

Decoration Day, better known these days as Memorial Day, is the United State's federal holiday that commemorates the military personnel that died while serving in our nation's armed forces.  From 1868 through 1970, Memorial Day was held on May 30.  Now, it is observed on the last Monday in May........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Boat Stuck In A Cove....  The Vessel Is Inaccessible....

Sometime Late Friday night or early Saturday morning, a boater on the Lake of the Ozarks took a wrong turn and ran the watersports boat aground in the back of Bollinger Creek Cove.

The vessel is accessible by personal watercraft, but several attempts to reach the boat with larger vessels were not successful.  A boater even tried to reach the vessel with a flat-bottomed fishing boat, but was only able to get within 100 feet of it.

Multiple sources report that the boat seems to be completely stuck in the mud, which has created a suction effect that is working against all attempts to pull it free.  The area the boat is grounded is likely not accessible to a crane from the land side.  To make matters worse, the Lake's elevation will only be falling, barring a localized flooding event........

Family Of Five's Kayak Capsized, Mother Only Survivor........

Thursday afternoon, a family vacation on Lake Superior turned tragic when a kayak capsized, claiming the lives of a father and three young children.  The mother was the sole survivor of the accident.

39 year old Erik Fryman and 29 year old Cari Mews had taken their children on an end-of-summer trip to the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin.  They were paddling from Madeline Island to Michigan Island when the wind and waves kicked up, causing the kayak to begin taking on water.

U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Alan Haraf said that the family's 13 1/2 foot kayak capsized, spilling all five people into the 60 degree water. All five were wearing life jackets........

Missouri Boating Legislation

New Boating Laws Have Gone Into Effect........

New boating laws have gone into effect in Missouri, just in time for one of the busiest boating weekends of the year, the Labor Day Weekend.

While the law requiring life jackets for all aboard a vessel and that they be accessible in the event of an emergency has not changed, the fine for a violation of this law has.  The fine has been reduced to $25 from $137.

New legislation has reduced fines for speeding in no-wake zones from $137 to $25.  Under prior law, no-wake zones were for coves 400 feet and smaller.  The new law is proposing no-wake zones for coves between 400 and 800 feet for boats larger than 40 feet.  The new no-wake law will need to be opened for public comment before it can be enforced........
