Hi Bill,

This is the New Dock in Paducah,KY. Get fuel or spend the night! It’s downtown near a hotel, bars, and restaurants.

Just traveling through the area and wanted to see what it looked like since Ramjet mentioned in his update to River Bills about a month ago.

We just need Cape Girardeau or Chester Illinois to build a dock like this. I’m sure there is grant money somewhere out there.

Just looking out for our boater friends.

Bill,

A beautiful day in Berlin 80 plus degrees. Berliners like to sit along the river and drink bier in their version of “the beach” Go figure? Not allowed to tie up signs and a few work boats along the way.

Heading home tomorrow (9-20-18) after two weeks.

The River Spree from Wikipedia:

The Spree is a river that flows through the Saxony, Brandenburg and Berlin states of Germany, and in the Ústí nad Labem region of the Czech Republic. Approximately 400 kilometres (250 mi) in length, it is a left bank tributary of the River Havel, which itself flows into the Elbe and then the North Sea. It is the river on which the original centre of Berlin was built....click here

Mississippi River Mayors Call For Plastic Waste Reduction.........

During a press event on Wednesday, the Mississippi River and Cities Initiative, which is a group of mayors from 85 cities along the Mississippi River in 10 states, called on businesses to reduce plastic waste by 20 percent within the next two years.

This request comes among increasing environmental concerns about plastic pollution travelling through the Mississippi River.  Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch says that addressing these concerns will take teamwork between businesses and elected officials.

Klipsch notes that cities will need to come up with ways to improve their municipal recycling programs.  He adds that they realize that as cities, they will need to step up their efforts in order to do their part........

Missouri Waterways

Did You Know Missouri Has Jellyfish?

Are you aware that there are jellyfish in some Missouri waterways?  On Tuesday, the Missouri Department of Conservation posted a video to their Facebook page showing freshwater jellyfish in Lake Tom Sawyer at Mark Twain State Park.

The MDC reports that freshwater jellyfish are not able to tolerate much of a current and are gentle swimmers.  They typically spend their time in calm or standing water, just below the surface.

While the freshwater jellyfish have the same basic stinging cells on their tentacles as their saltwater cousins, they are not likely to penetrate human skin.  There have been some reports of redness or itching, but the majority of people can't feel them at all........

BoatUS Released Fueling, Ethanol Survey........

BoatUS recently released the results of a survey of recreational boaters' experiences with refueling their boats over the summer.  The corn-ethanol fuel blends are mandated by the federal government's Renewable Fuel Standard.

The survey was completed by the Boat Owners of the United States in order to gauge boater's use of ethanol fuel blends and ethanol free fuel during the peak 2018 boating season.

The survey results highlight possible misfueling issues, and give recreational boaters an opportunity to be heard as the Renewable Fuel Standard being debated in Washington D.C.........

News Release From BoatUS

ALEXANDRIA, Va., September 19, 2018 – A survey of recreational boaters’ experience with refueling their vessels this past summer shows little love for corn-ethanol fuel blends mandated by the federal government’s Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).
The survey was completed by Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), the national advocacy, services and safety group for recreational boaters, to gauge boaters’ use of ethanol-free and ethanol-fuel blends during the peak 2018 boating season. The results identify potential misfueling issues and allow recreational boaters to be heard as RFS policy is being debated on Capitol Hill. Only fuels containing up to 10-percent ethanol (E10) are permitted for use in recreational boats, and anything greater has been shown to damage marine engines and will void warranties.
The BoatUS Summer Fueling Survey identified
• the boaters’ fuel of choice: About half (49 percent) of respondents said they filled up their boats with E0 (ethanol-free) fuel this summer. However, if they had their choice of fuel, more than four in five (83 percent) would choose E0 (ethanol-free) fuel – if it was available. Forty-one percent reported the availability of E0 has stayed about the same over the last three years. However, by a margin of more than two to one (31 percent to 14 percent), some respondents said the availability of E0 was becoming more difficult to locate over the last three years.
• boat refueling locations: The survey reported that boaters refuel their boats at a combination of locations both off and on the water. Fifty-three percent of respondents said they refuel their boat at roadside gas stations, followed by on-water fuel docks (50 percent) and filling gas cans or portable gas tanks at roadside gas stations (32 percent).
• misfueling issues: BoatUS has concerns over potential consumer misfueling as E15 (15 percent ethanol) pump-labeling requirements are minimal with just a small orange warning label on roadside gas station pumps. About half (49 percent) of survey respondents reported being unaware that the use of E15 gasoline in marine engines was prohibited under federal law and will void the engine warranty. More than 4 in 5 survey respondents (84 percent) could not correctly identify the color of the small misfueling warning label required on gas station dispenser pumps that sell E15. Both may be indications that current pump labels are not effective and misfueling could occur.
• ethanol-related repairs: About one in three of those surveyed (36 percent) reported having been advised that repairs to their boats’ engines and/or fuel systems were required as a result of ethanol fuel.
When it was passed in 2005, RFS assumed that America’s use of gasoline would continue to grow. Since then, however, gasoline usage has not increased as forecast, which today forces more ethanol into each gallon of gas. To keep up with the RFS mandate and avoid hitting a “blend wall” in which the volume of ethanol production would exceed consumption and infrastructure constraints, in 2010 the EPA granted a waiver to allow E15 into the marketplace.

Arch Lights To Be Extinguished To Aid Migration........

Frank Mares, the Deputy Superintendent of the Gateway Arch National Park reports that Monday night marks the first night the lights will be off at the Arch for the fall bird migration.

Mares adds that the lights were installed in 2001, and they have shutting them down the last two weeks in September and once again in the springtime.

The National Park Service and the Audubon Society determined that it would be best to turn the lights out to protect birds migrating at night, who could be vulnerable to large lights that point upwards........

18th Quincy Classic Boat Show Was This Weekend........

This past weekend, over 50 boats lined the Quincy Boat Club's parking lot as part of the 18th Annual Quincy Classic Boat and Outboard Show.

Show organizer Toddd Young says that this year's show had to be changed on account of high river levels along the Mississippi River, however, there was plenty to see.

Young notes that there are usually more docks and boats on the river, and on Friday, there is usually a run from Hannibal to Quincy.  High river levels cancelled this event........

Duck Boat Victim's Families Object To Lawsuit Delay........

Family members of some of the 17 people that died following the sinking of a duck boat near Branson, Missouri are saying that federal prosecutors could delay their efforts in getting answers about the July 19 incident.

Reportedly, federal prosecutors are calling on a judge to stop the civil lawsuits related to the incident on Table Rock Lake until their criminal investigation is wrapped up.

According to attorney Gerald McGonagle, this motion will just delay the families' lawsuits.  It is not certain how long the federal investigation will take........

Spending time in Berlin out walking. River Spree lock, apartments and my favorite no anchor sign. Very different than our river.

Auf wiedersehen

Rob

Translation From Wikipedia

Auf wiedersehen

Literally: “until our reunion”, “until we see each other again”. Probably a calque of French au revoir. Compare further Italian arrivederci, Dutch tot ziens, English until we meet again and see you, and similar forms in many languages of the world.

MRCTI Holding Annual Meeting In The Quad Cities........

Next week, over 30 mayors from towns along the Mississippi River will be in the Quad Cities for three days for the annual meeting of the Mississippi River Cities & Towns Initiative (MRCTI)

The group was formed six years ago, and advocates for economic and environmental progress along the Mississippi River.  This year, the MRCTI is co-chaired by Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch.

Klipsch says that the Quad Cities was chosen for this year's annual group meeting, partially for Illinois' bicentennial celebration, but also for the Quad Cities' unique five city collaboration........

Classic Boat Show Running Over The Weekend........

Over the weekend, the Quincy Boat Club is hosting the Quincy Classic Boat and Outboard Show, which began on Friday and will run through Sunday.

According to Todd Young, one of the show's organizers, the Quincy Boat Club has been hosting the classic boat show for 18 years, and they have had up to 75 boats in attendance.  He notes that this year, there will likely be fewer boats, as the Mississippi River is above flood stage.

Usually, there would be several boats attending the annual show coming up from Hannibal, but with the Mississippi River running high, and flood gates installed in Hannibal, the river run was called off for this year........

Unexpected Riverboat Docking A Boon For Quincy's Economy........

The riverboat America was scheduled to dock in Hannibal on Friday, however, the level of the Mississippi River was too high near the Hannibal Train Bridge for the vessel to pass under.

Austin said that a lot of the town's partners got together to welcome the America's passengers to Quincy.  It is not certain when the riverboat will leave Quincy, by City Engineer Jeffery Conte said that the boat will stay overnight........
