Riverboat Captain Retiring After 45 Years On The River........

For close to a half-century, Tom Dunn, the director of operations for Gateway Arch Riverboats, has made sure that cruises aboard two riverboats have gone off without a hitch.  Now, he is retiring.

Dunn has spent the past 45 years in the Gateway Arch's shadow, however, when October rolls around, the Becky Thatcher and the Tom Sawyer will cruise the river without him.

Dunn says that over boats have come and gone from the riverfront, such as the Admiral and the Robert E. Lee, but the Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher have remained along the St. Louis riverfront, open for cruising........

On Thursday, U.S. Senators Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Dick Durbin (D-ILL) attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Olmstead Locks and Dam along the Ohio River.

The region around the Olmstead Dam is one of the busier stretches of the Ohio River for commercial navigation.  The area is expected to be operational two years ahead of schedule, and completed 4 years ahead of schedule.

Durbin says that the Olmstead Lock and Dam project is one of the costliest civil works projects in our nation's history.  Estimates say that the project will pay for itself within five years........

The Coast Guard has released a list of helpful hints on staying safe on the water:

○  Boat Sober

○  Make Sure You Can Communicate With Someone In The Event Of An Emergency

News Release From BoatUS

U.S. Coast Guard issues Marine Safety Alert on potential interference problem

JALEXANDRIA, Va., August 30, 2018 – With their low battery draw, cooler operation and sturdy construction, LED lights have been popular with recreational boaters. The lights may also be causing poor VHF radio and Automatic Identification System (AIS) reception, according to a Marine Safety Alert issued by the U.S. Coast Guard on August 15. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water is urging boat owners to follow the Coast Guard’s simple test procedures for LED interference and report any instances to the Coast Guard Navigation Center.

The alert, issued for informational purposes, outlines reports received from mariners concerning radio frequency interference caused by LED lamps that “were found to create potential safety hazards.” In some cases, the Coast Guard says, the interference may cause problems if mariners need to call for help. The interference can affect VHF voice communications as well as Digital Selective Calling (DSC) messages, and it may also affect AIS because they also use VHF radio. In particular, masthead LED navigation lights on sailboats may cause problems due to their close proximity to antennas.

The Coast Guard advises that it is possible to test for the presence of LED interference by using the following procedures:

1. Turn off LED light(s).
2. Tune the VHF radio to a quiet channel (for example, channel 13).
3. Adjust the VHF radio's squelch control until the radio outputs audio noise.
4. Re-adjust the VHF radio's squelch control until the audio noise is quiet, only slightly above the noise threshold.
5. Turn on the LED light(s).

If the radio now outputs audio noise, then the LED lights are causing interference and it is likely that both shipboard VHF marine radio and AIS reception are being degraded by LED lighting. Potential solutions include contacting an electronics repair facility to address the problem, changing the LED bulb to incandescent bulb or fixture, or increasing the separation between the LED light and antenna.

The Coast Guard also requests those experiencing this problem to report their experiences to the Coast Guard Navigation Center by selecting “Maritime Telecommunications” on the subject drop-down list, then briefly describing the make and model of LED lighting and radios affected, the distance from lighting to any antennas and radios affected, and any other information that may help them understand the scope of the problem.

If you’d like to learn more about VHF DSC radio or AIS operation, BoatUS Foundation has online courses and a free DSC VHF tutorial at BoatUS.org.

News Release From BoatUS

NORWALK, Conn., August 30, 2018 – Want to learn the basics of powerboating or brush up on your skills? The nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water together with the Norwalk Boat Show, Freedom Boat Club and West Marine are offering three affordable on-water boat training courses during the show, held at Norwalk Marina, Sept. 20-23.

“Intro to Boating” and “Women Making Waves” are both three hours long and offered at $149. A program just for teens ages 13-17, “Junior Captain,” is 90-minutes long and priced at $99. Adult class size is limited to four students per vessel, and teen boats are limited to three, ensuring each student gets sufficient time at the helm under the watchful eye of a U.S. Coast Guard-certified instructor.

Boats are provided by Freedom Boat Club Norwalk. The “Intro to Boating” course covers shifting and steering, basic docking, open-water handling and basic navigation. The ladies-only course, “Women Making Waves,” offers the same curriculum and is the perfect opportunity to spend a half day learning boat-handling techniques in a supportive environment. Both courses are taught aboard 20-26 foot powerboats.
The “Junior Captain” program is offered under a partnership of National Safe Boating Council and Annapolis School of Seamanship and gives teens the opportunity to learn shifting, steering and throttle control, stopping, station holding, understanding the “weathervane” effect and how to use “the boater’s eye” technique to safely navigate. It’s taught aboard 14-foot rigid-hull inflatable boats.

The goal of the courses is to address the high costs typically associated with at-the-helm training, making hands-on boating education more accessible. The courses also offer area residents the chance to try out recreational boating and give boaters the opportunity to improve their boat-handling skills.

“Intro to Boating” and “Women Making Waves” are offered Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. “Junior Captain” begins Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3 p.m., and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Space is limited. Students for “Intro to Boating” and “Women Making Waves” must be 21 years or older. “Junior Captain” students must be ages 13-17. To sign up for any on-water training course from the BoatUS Foundation, go to BoatUS.org/On-Water.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND MUSIC LINEUP AND SPECIALS
Saturday - Tim Session @ 8p.m.
Tim Session puts on a show unlike any other. Recording guitar, bass, ukulele and drum sounds (all live) into a looping machine, Tim is a self-contained one-man jam band. But Tim doesn't just use the looping machine, he plays it and incorporates it into his show like an instrument.

Sunday - Marquise Knox @ 1p.m.
When the 14-year-old Marquise Knox exited BB's Jazz, Blues and Soups stage at the Baby Blues Showcase the audience screamed for more. The 2005 performance announced to St. Louis that a prodigy had arrived. Over the next decade, mentored by the best of the old delta bluesmen, Knox would hone his musical, songwriting and stage skills while surrounding himself with some of the best musicians in town. Now, at age 27, the prodigy days are over. The fully formed bluesman has arrived.
It has been an amazing ride with multiple European tours and Blues Cruises, playing with legends and opening for B.B. King.

Prosecutors Say Possible Negligence In Duck Boat Accident........

The U.S. Coast Guard says that they have discovered probable cause that the sinking of a duck boat on Table Rock Lake last month was the result of "misconduct, negligence or inattention to the duties" by the vessel's captain.

The court motion, which was filed Wednesday by the U.S. attorney's office, also notes that the captain of a second duck boat that made it across the lake safely when the storm blew in also acted in a "grossly negligent manor".

Prosecutors in the motion requested that the federal court order attorneys involved in lawsuits related to the incident from sharing evidence and information collected until the criminal investigation is completed........

Speed Blamed For Fatal Boat Crash Back in May........

Officials are placing the blame on excessive speed for a boating accident that clamed the lives of three people on the Lake of the Ozarks.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their crash reconstruction report over three months after a 1991 Regal Runabout crashed into a rock bluff in the wee hours of May 19.

The report also notes that in addition to excessive speed, "nightime conditions" were a factor.  It also states that the vessel lacked navigation aids such as a GPS unit or a chart plotter........

Mississippi River Journeys

Three Veterans Paddling Mississippi River As Part Of A Therapy Program........

After a month of paddling down the Mississippi River. three veterans arrived in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Their journey is part of a Warrior Expeditions program , which is a not-for-profit outdoor therapy program that assists veterans in transitioning from wartime experiences via long-distance outdoor expeditions.

United States Navy Richard Bain, who was deployed to Kuwait and Iraq, says that the journey helps him to relax, and get to know two strangers that have the common bond of military service with each other.

United States Army Ryan Webb, who was deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, says that this trip allows the restoration of faith in humanity, which gets lost when you see the ugly side of people for too long.

United States Army Matt Roy, who was deployed to Kosovo and Iraq, says that this adventure is therapeutic for him as nature allows them time to think, talk and bond........

The Great Flood Of 1993

Looking At The 1993 Flood; The St. Louis Region Is Better Prepared For Flooding........

On Monday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, weather experts and emergency responders were down at the Gateway Arch to remember the Great Flood of 1993, which was 25 years ago.

Several speakers, including Louis Uccellini, the director of the National Weather Service, discussed how the St. Louis region is better prepared to handle a major flood like in 1993.

Uccellini says that specifically, improvements in weather forecasting have been made, allowing for the prediction of extreme weather and water events up to a week in advance.  The levee systems and flood walls have been improved, and there are also improvements in interagency cooperation........

River History....

28 August 2016 in River History

The Historic Riverboat Preservation Association announced:
The Goldenrod has been handed over to them free and clear of all legal issues, all debts are clear and we are in good standing with the land owners. With that being said, yes we realize the boat is unable to be repaired. Here is a rough draft of our plan; Finish taking apart the Goldenrod piece by piece while taking measurements and drawings of everything. We have been talking to prospective places in St. Louis to do a reconstruction of the showboat using original wood on land with water around it to make it look how its supposed to. Yes, we are crazy and its a long shot, but its one we are all willing to take.

Note: Later, the boat mysteriously caught fire and burned down to the steel hull.

Take A Stroll Out To A Missouri River Island........

Not many people are aware that there is an island in the Missouri River in St. Louis County that you can walk to.  Howell Island has more than 7 miles of trails and is perfect for all types of outdoor recreation including hiking, wildlife watching and fishing.

Visitors can access the 2,500 acre island by walking across the causeway spanning Centaur Chute.  When the river is up, however, the causeway is impassible and access to the island is cut off.

When visitors arrive on Howell Island, they can explore the inner island trail, or sit along the Missouri River's edge for excellent fishing.  During the proper seasons, hunting is allowed on the island........

Lake Of The Ozarks

American Ethanol Is The Shootout Top Gun........

Despite some initial issues, American Ethanol is the 2018 Shootout Top Gun once again, posting a 204 mile per hour run on the shortened race course.

The initial run saw a propeller blowout and a loose hatch limit American Ethanol's first effort to a 189 MPH run.  This was enough to take the Top Gun honor, as the nest fastest run was made by Tony Chiaramonte's DCB M-35 at 168 MPH.

The American Ethanol team knew the boat had plenty more in it, and the next run netted a 198 MPH exit speed.  The team's final run of 204 MPH tied their 2017 Shootout winning speed........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

The MLK Bridge Closure Will Start Monday........

Starting Monday, the Martin Luther King Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at St. Louis will be closing for about a year.  The closure will allow crews to make repairs to the bridges and ramps leading to the span.

According to John Scheibal, an engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the project will involve the replacement of the 1,300 foot bridge, some bridge deck surfacing and sealing and the installation of lights.

The MLK Bridge will remain closed through early fall of next year.  Scheibal says that finding alternate routes or modes of transportation is highly recommended.........

Swimmer Swept Away By Strong Currents........

Around 6:30 pm Sunday evening, a group of young adults and teenagers were swimming in the Big River upstream from the hydroelectric dam when a swimmer in his 20's was swept away by strong currents.

The young man was able to grab a rock prior to going over the waterfall.  The Eureka And High Ridge Fire Protection Districts were called out to the scene.

A rope was tossed to the young man to hold onto until a rescue swimmer could retrieve him and bring him safely to shore.  He was evaluated by an ambulance crew at the scene........

King.

Hi Bill,

Today I met this nice young man Jeremy Donovan who is on an unusual boat ride ending ultimately in Alaska!

The New York native has a sad reason for his trip, as he explains, “My 16-year-old son Keegan Ashton Donovan committed suicide on March 6, 2017. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with. Two days after his death, Keegan told me to take him to Alaska by boat which is a very, very hard task. So I've got a 25 foot Sea Ray and I'm taking my son's ashes to Alaska, and I'm going to put him on a spot overlooking the Pacific Ocean. My boat is called Fast Boat which has two meanings. The first is father and son together, the second is fathers against suicidal thoughts.

For more information about Jeremy, check his Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Fast-Boat-518573588502684/

See you on the river!
