The Pictures of the Day .... were sent to us by Sherri Stanczak

Hi Bill,

This was only my second time out this year, since I had a car accident and other health problems; but what a beautiful evening. Plus, we seen some wonderful friends as well! Two of them were Pat & Phyllis Reiners. Not to mention, the gorgeous sunset we saw! I'd like to share some of the photos I took as it has been awhile since I got to enjoy this magnificent view. Thank you!

Bests,
Sherri Stanczak

RavenRamjet Captains Log

Headed South on the Mississippi River

To Where The Rivers Meet The Sounds And Seas

Hi Bill,

A RavenRamjet update!

Captains Log Star Day 1
Ginger G 1972 Chris Craft Aquahome
It’s time out with the movie star on our own! It was Thursday July 12, 2018. We docked for fuel. Then we beached her on Enterprise Island to say farewell to all or Blursday night river rats. The RAM in Ramjet even showed up for the occasion. We decided to go to another beach 521. We meet up with some friends out of Alton whom have American Beauty a 1969 Chris Craft Aquahome. Paying attention to floodwaters dropping about a foot in 24 hours we decided to move the boat. When using assistants to pull off the beach in current be certain the person bringing you the aft to shore anchor keeps the rope tight so it does not get wrapped up into the propeller and shaft. I made an attempt holding my breath to free the rope. Can’t hold my breath that long. We left the boat where it was for the night.

Star Day 2.
I rose with the dawn to get my diving gear and free the rope. I tried every knife we own including ones from the galley. I found out the best where serrated. Ran out of air! Just then our friends Lowell and Dianne showed up to cook us breakfast. Ahhhh! Ate, got a ride to the harbor from American Beauty’s tender went to town. More air, hacksaw, supplies. Returned to the island at 5:30 pm. Freed the rope. Stayed the night on the beach.

Star Day 3.
No damage other than the rope. Arrived back to the Harbor to load our final items and head out. I noticed a problem. Structural! Delay of game.

Star Day 4-?
As some of you have seen. The closet I build my Queen. Well it needs more support! Good to know now than on the river with no access to supplies or knowledge. How many Jacks and straps does it take?

It’s day 8 now and I’m still working on it! So yes here is our update. I will keep you all up to date as we continue our journey to where the rivers meet the sounds and seas. When our we departing? GodSpeed!

Operation Clean Stream
Meramec River and Its Tributaries Rivers....

Volunteers Needed for Operation Clean Stream on August 26,2018

Since 1967, The Open Space Council for the St. Louis Region has organized Operation Clean Stream, one of the country's largest and longest running river restoration projects.

The fourth weekend of every August, event volunteers take to the Meramec River and its tributaries, working to undo damage caused throughout the year by flooding, careless littering and the unlawful dumping of trash. Volunteers participate both in canoes and boats, as well as on the shore, in nearby parks, and along nearby trails. They also have a lot of fun!

A Look Back

The Dredge Ste. Genevieve........

In 1984, the Ste. Genevieve, which was the last steam powered stern wheeler cutterhead dredge used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was retired.  The vessel was been gifted to Davenport where it was to become a tourist attraction.

In the spring of 1985, the Ste. Genny as she was affectionately called, was moored along the Davenport riverfront, where she was slated to be converted into a floating museum, a dockside restaurant or a bed and breakfast. This never occurred.

In the fall of 1990, the Ste. Genny left the Quad Cities for the Missouri River at St. Charles, Missouri, where she was to become the Great River Museum.  That plan did not come to fruition either.

The vessel sank in 1992 near Cairo, Illinois.  She was raised, and sank again in Cape Girardeau in 1994.  After that, she was reportedly scrapped........

Mercury Marine Offering Electronics Interface Platform........

Thanks to the acquisition of Power Products, Mercury Marine will now be able to provide an electrical backbone for manufacturers and customers guaranteeing that components and systems operate seamlessly together.

For quite some time, the marine and RV industries have been challenged with making electrical components operate together, and until recently, there has been no support to help the OEMs integrate these systems.

A new division of Power Products, Power Products Integrated Services, is helping to integrate these systems so that they can communicate with one another, regardless of brand........

We didn't get any pics of the contest, but it was wild and it was intense.  The crowd was cheering them all on. The RiverBills Girls kept the contestants supplied with tray after tray of shucked oysters. Some contestants called it quits part way through the contest. Brad Hagen of the Grafton Oyster Bar was running the time clock.

Kevin just kept his cool and kept eating away and won the contest.

River History....

July 19, 1815 in River History

Treaty between the United States and the Yankton Sioux Indians took place in Portage Des Sioux, Missouri.

It was a treaty of peace and friendship, made by William Clark, Ninian Edwards, and Auguste Chouteau, Commissioners Plenipotentiary of the United States of America, and the Yancton Tribe of Indians. Both parties were desirous of re-establishing peace and friendship on the same footing upon which they stood before the war between Great Briton and the United States.

Study Looks At How Farmers Benefit From Dredging........

Farmer and chairman of the STCm Gerry Hayden says that one of the reasons soybean farmers can remain profitable is access to river shipping, and dredging would improve the supply chain and the farmer's profitability........

Boat Manufacturer

Alumacraft Head Disappointed Yamaha Exiting Engine Agreement........

Following the sale of Alumacraft boats to BRP, the parent company of Evinrude outboards, Alumacraft intended to continue offering outboard engines from five manufacturers as it always had.

James Irwin, president of Alumacraft said that from the very beginning, there were discussions indicating that the relationships would continue, and they would continue to work with all engine manufacturers.

Last Friday, Yamaha had released a statement stating that they would discontinue supplying engines to the boat manufacturer.  Irwin says that they are disappointed by Yamaha's decision to cancel an agreement that was in place and had worked for both companies for many years........

Tow Allison Closes Mel Price's Auxiliary Lock........

Twice this month, tows have struck both of the locks at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26, resulting in shutdowns and the inevitable barge backup.

The latest incident happened Monday at around 7:00 pm at the 600 foot long auxiliary lock, causing its closure until approximately 9 am Tuesday morning.

Romanda Walker, public affairs specialist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District said that crews were carrying out maintenance work on the main lock chamber, so they were using the auxiliary lock.  Monday evening, a tow encountered issues, struck the wall, freeing some barges........

The state of Missouri recently revoked the peace officer license of the former highway patrol trooper who had been piloting a patrol boat when a handcuffed man fell from the boat and drowned.

According to the Kansas City Star, Anthony Piercy's license was permanently revoked after the Missouri Department of Public Safety reviewed evidence in the drowning death of 20 year old Brandon Ellingson.

News Release From BoatUS

Want to Learn How to Boat? Affordable On-Water Training Courses July 19, 20

SAVANNAH, Ga., July 17, 2018 – Want to learn the basics of powerboating or brush up on your skills? The nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water together with Freedom Boat Club Savannah offer a choice of two fun on-water training courses taught aboard 21-foot powerboats: ‘Intro to Boating’ and ‘Women Making Waves’, Thursday, July 19, and Friday, July 20, at the club’s location at Bahia Bleu Marina, 2812 River Drive.
The three-hour courses start at 12:30 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Friday’s courses begin at either 9:00 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. All are affordably priced at $149 per person. Class size is limited to three or four students per vessel, ensuring each student gets sufficient time at the helm under the watchful eye of a qualified instructor.
The “Intro to Boating” course covers shifting and steering, basic docking, open-water handling and basic navigation. The ladies-only course, ‘Women Making Waves’, offers the same curriculum and offers the perfect opportunity to spend a half-day learning boat-handling techniques in a supportive environment.
The goal of the BoatUS Foundation and Freedom Boat Club Savannah courses is to address the high costs typically associated with at-the-helm training, making hands-on boating education more affordable. The courses also offer area residents the chance to try out recreational boating and give boaters the opportunity to brush up on their boat-handling skills.
Space is limited. Must be 21 years or older. To sign up for a course or seek out others, go to www.BoatUS.org/On-Water.

Lake Of The Ozarks

Recent PWC Fires Illustrates Importance Of Checking For Fumes........

In recent weeks, there have been several fires aboard personal watercraft on the Lake of the Ozarks.  According to Chief Kevin Hurtibise of the Rocky Mount Fire Protection District, there have been multiple reports of fuel tanks venting into the engine compartment, creating vapors.

Hurtibise is recommending that PWC operators remove the seat and check for fuel vapors in the engine compartment.  He adds that the engine compartment should be aired out to make sure that there are no gas fumes present.

Personal watercraft are not required to have blowers however, they are equipped with a passive ventilation system which has moving air drawing gas fumes from the engine compartment........

Alton Suspending Amphitheater Event Ticket Tax........

For the pas nine years, the City of Alton has had an amusement tax, however, they never have collected any of the receipts.  Next week, Alton's aldermen will be voting to officially exempt amphitheater events from the tax.

Corporation Counselor Jim Schrempf says that the current code requires that the taxes be collected on ticket sales, but it hasn't been done.

The unenforced ticket tax was discovered when the Alton City Treasurer Cameo Foster was going over city code and spotted the amusement tax ordinance........

Manufacturers Concerned Over Potential Raw Material Price Hike........

The National Association of Manufacturers recently conducted a Manufacturer's Outlook Survey, which revealed that rising raw material costs are the number two business concern following workforce recruitment and retention.

Over the next 12 months, the price of raw materials are expected to rise at their quickest pace in seven years.  NAM reports that producer prices for final demand goods and services increased 0.3% in June.  This was attributed to higher energy costs.

Since June of 2017, producer prices have risen 3.3 percent, up from 3.1 percent year over year in the last release.  This is the fastest pace since December 2011........

Upper Mississippi River

Headwaters Of The Mississippi Getting A Makeover........

The headwaters of the Mississippi River is a destination for over a half million visitors from around the world each year who want to cross the humble beginnings of America's greatest river.

After 80 years worth of tourists, the headwaters site has become worn.  The banks have eroded from not only the water's current, but also the heavy foot traffic.  The width of the stream has nearly doubled and is filling in with sand.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is being tasked with figuring out how to restore the Mississippi River's headwaters without really altering the site........

Mississippi River Flooding

25 Years Ago, Massive Flooding Swamped River Towns........

25 years ago this summer, considerable flooding along the Mississippi River and it's tributaries converted roadways, towns and fields into lakes.

The flood of 1993 began in March of 1993 and lasted all summer.  This lengthy flood pushed city, county, state and federal resources and volunteer laborers to their limits.

According to the National Weather Service, the flooding, which was driven by heavy rainfall in the Upper Midwest, caused close to $15 billion in damages across nine states........

Fishy Tales From Hilton Head, South Carolina

An Alligator Ate A Shark Off The South Carolina Coast........

An alligator was recently caught on video eating a small shark off the coast of South Carolina.  The video shows a 7 foot long alligator eating a bonnethead shark on Skull Creek.

Reportedly, the alligator was out of it's usual habitat while swimming in the saltwater Skull Creek, which is part of the Intracoastal Waterway.  The locals have taken to calling the alligator "Charllie".

Kristen Poillon, who had shot the video, says that Charlie doesn't appear to be aggressive, and that he shows up to the dock where anglers from the fishing charters clean their fish for an easy meal........
