Missouri American Water MR340

A Race Across Missouri on the Missouri River........

Imagine a race across the entire state of Missouri, just you and your boat thrown against 340 miles of wind, heat, bugs and rain. This ain’t no mama’s boy float trip. This race promises to test your mettle from the first stroke in Kansas City to the last gasp in St. Charles. Just entering it will impress your friends. Finishing it will astound them… and winning it? Well, you always thought you were sort of a legend anyway, didn’t you? It’s time to prove it.

The Missouri 340 is an endurance race across the state of Missouri. Competitors will start in Kansas City and finish, some of them anyway, in St. Charles. With numerous towns and hamlets, the course offers plenty of opportunity for resupply while enroute. The Missouri River is also incredibly scenic and isolated in some stretches, with wildlife and beautiful vistas to rival any river in North America. But if you’re trying to win this race, you won’t have time to enjoy any of it.

Participants are allowed exactly 88 hours to complete the course. There are nine checkpoints along the route where paddlers are required to sign in and sign out. Cutoff times will be associated with these checkpoints based on the 88 hour pace. Failure to checkpoint deadlines is grounds for disqualification. To finish this race in 88 hours is a huge accomplishment. Only 2/3 of the teams were able to do that last year.

There are no dams, locks or portages on this stretch of the Missouri. You could, conceivably, finish this race without ever having left your boat. (We don’t recommend it.) This doesn’t mean that the race is without danger. Any time you put yourself on the water, especially moving water, you assume a certain amount of risk. The Missouri 340 course is all on Class I water. The current is about 2-3 mph and there are no rapids. The biggest hazard to paddlers would be motorboats, mostly fisherman, and the occasional towboat pushing barges. In river obstacles would include wing dikes, buoys and bridge pilings.

Kincaid Lake Near Murphysboro, Illinois

Woman From St. Louis Injured In Boat Accident........

On Sunday, a St. Louis woman was injured after the boat she was aboard crashed into a dam on Kinkaid Lake near Murphysboro, Illinois.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office reports that around 11:55 pm, they received a 911 call reporting a boating accident.  Deputies, the Illinois Conservation Police and the Jackson County EMS responded to the incident.

Reportedly, 36 year old Rebecca Reeves was piloting a 1995 Crownline 182BR near the Kinkaid Lake spillway, striking the dam.  She was thrown from the vessel and taken to the ER via ambulance.  A male passenger was uninjured........

Boat Part Supplier

25% Tariff On Boat Parts Takes Effect........

Recently, the Trump Administration implemented the first phase of Section 301 tariffs on approximately $34 billion worth of Chinese products.  This includes some marine engines, navigational equipment and components.

The tariffs are in response to China's alleged theft of U.S. intellectual property.  The tariffs may possibly be expanded to a total of more that $50 billion.

NMMA President Thom Dammrich says that on one hand, he is pleased that the Trump Administration is taking China to task for stealing U.S. Intellectual property, but he disproves placing tariffs on products used by American manufacturers........

Corps Considering Removing Upper Mississippi River Locks And Dams........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is looking at the possibility of removing the three dams in the Minneapolis/St. Paul region, which would effectively transform the river from a slowly flowing commercial waterway into white-water rapids.

The Corps is hosting meetings this month to determine what to do with the locks, however, just the thought of restoring the Upper Mississippi River to it's natural state has stirred up a public debate.

The Corps shut down the Upper St. Anthony Lock in 2015 to prevent the spread of the invasive Asian carp, and in August 2017, they began a disposition study, which will include public meetings next weekend.  The Corps is expected to meke their recommendations by 2019........

Boat Maintenance

What Should You Do In The Event Of An Overheating Boat?

According to BoatUS Marine Insurance data, an overheating boat engine is not a minor issue, as nearly ten percent of boat fires are caused by an overheating engine.

There are a few indicators boaters can look for to determine if the vessel is overheating.  First and foremost, the temperature gauge running high indicates a problem.  If the engine is losing power, is releasing a lot of steam out of the exhaust or is difficult to restart until it has cooled, it may be overheating.

Once you determine that the boat is running hot, it is crucial to troubleshoot the problem so that it can be repaired.  Some of the more common causes for overheating include a failed water pump impeller, clogged or restricted raw water intakes or strainers or even a loose or broken water pump belt........

Man Struck By His Propeller While Attempting A Rescue........

Friday evening, a man was struck by his boat's propeller while trying to help someone on the Grand Glaize Arm of the Lake of the Ozarks.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that 62 year old Randy Leary was running a 2015 Tracker bass boat, when he spotted an injured man face down in the water.  He dove out of his boat to help turn the injured male face up.

Leary's boat was in neutral but still in motion.  His feet were hit by the vessel's prop while he was trying to help the ,am in the water.  Leary was taken to the hospital with what the Patrol calls minor injuries........

Ahoy Riverbill,

Jim Sadowski & Glenn Sadowski here in Wiarton, Ontario with Riverbills....

Just yesterday, we arrived at our destination here in Wiarton. We brought the boat from Port Charles Harbor in St. Charles up here to Canada.

Jim in the photo is checking water depth. You can see the bottom here at 18 foot, but visibility to the bottom is greater than that in deeper water.

The other photos were taken at the Benjamin islands in the North Channel of Lake Huron (also in Canada).

We spent about three weeks getting here and will be here for couple more days until we fly home, out of Toronto on Monday.

According to production manager Stephen Skopec, the facility's 130 member workforce is mostly made up of new workers.  He says that in April, they started out building three boats per day for a week, gradually working up to building 20 boats per day with the full staff........

Sad News

  David Berg, D.O.

It is with great sadness to tell you that Dave Berg, D.O. has passed away. Dave and his wife JoAnn are long time river boaters. First at Yacht Club and then for many years at Port Charles Harbor. During their boating years they were active in many boating clubs including Anchor Yankers and Con Trios. They were also social members at Duck Club Yacht Club. I’m sure many of your readers would like to know his service arrangements.

Thank you!

Coast Guard reminds public to watch for illegal passenger vessel operations

ST. LOUS -- The Coast Guard is advising the public to be aware of and avoid unlawful vessel charter operations on navigable waterways.

The Coast Guard has received reports from reputable sources including prominent members of the maritime community and legal passenger vessel operators about illegal passenger vessels conducting charter operations.

Unlawful operations include, but are not limited to:
•Charter services carrying a “Passenger for Hire” without a Coast Guard issued Merchant Mariner’s Credential consistent with offered services.
•Bareboat charter services that provide a vessel with a crew/master or carry more than 12 passengers onboard.
•Charter services that carry more than six passengers, at least one of which are for hire, and are not certified by the Coast Guard.

The public can request to see the captain’s Coast Guard credentials before making a payment.

“Passengers should understand the safety requirements before paying for boating services,” said Capt. Scott Stoermer, commander, Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River. “People have a right to know they are paying for a safe voyage before handing over their money. Vessel-for-hire services with a captain who is not credentialed puts passengers and surrounding boats in danger. Anyone that suspects a passenger vessel is operating illegally should immediately contact the Coast Guard.”

The basic laws and definitions governing charter services can be found in Title 46 United States Code 2101 and Title 46 Code of Federal Regulations 175.000.

MSHP:  Inexperience On The Water, Alcohol A Deadly Concoction........

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says that there are too many people hitting the lake, streams and rivers without being prepared.  This inexperience is proving to be fatal, and is a growing problem.

According to Corporal Charles Bowles with the MSHP, people are unaware of the dynamics of the water and this can be a tragic situation.

Bowles adds that many of the drownings they respond to involve people that wade out, believing that they are alright, but the water increases in depth and they drown........

Illinois River Near Beardstown, Illinois

Man's Torso Washed Up In The Illinois River, Officials Release Sketch........

Back in 2016, a commercial fisherman spotted the torso of a man floating in the Illinois River near Beardstown, Illinois.  At that time, foul play was suspected.  The county coroner said that the limbs had been removed from the body.

The investigation was active for better than seven months, however, little progress was made by the Peoria County Sheriff's Office in identifying the torso.

Not too long ago, a skull washed up near Kingston Mines and the Illinois State Police Crime Lab collected a DNA sample.  The DNA from the skull matched the DNA of the torso.  A forensic artist created and released a drawing of the man's face........

EMPHASIS: BWI Sobriety Checkpoint To Be Conducted At Lake Of The Ozarks

Captain Michael A. Turner, commanding officer of Troop F, Jefferson City, announces that a BWI sobriety checkpoint will be conducted on Lake of the Ozarks sometime in July.

According to the most recent 2017 U.S. Coast Guard recreational boating crash statistics, alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating crashes.

Boaters who come across a checkpoint on the water may be stopped. Officers will keep the contact brief with the operator and perform a basic safety check of the boat’s equipment. If the officer suspects the operator to be under the influence of intoxicants and/or drugs, they will be asked to submit to a field sobriety test. All efforts will be made to keep the process as brief as possible. The Missouri State Highway Patrol appreciates the public’s cooperation.

“Operating a boat while impaired is just as dangerous -- and just as illegal -- as driving a car while impaired," stated Captain Turner. "To ensure the safety for all people on the water, boaters should designate a sober operator for their vessel anytime their plans include alcohol.”

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!! Follow Troop F on Twitter for the most current news @MSHPTrooperF.

Salvage Diver Has Stories To Tell........

If your occupation involves diving for and retrieving sunken things in the Lake of the Ozarks, you tend to have a variety of stories to tell.

According to Tim McNitt of Atlantis Dive & Dock Salvage, floating items that prefer to sink become a "comedy of errors in dangerous places".

McNItt operates Atlantis on the Lake, but when something pricy sinks in deep waters in Kansas, Illinois and Tennessee, he gets into his dive gear and hops into the water........

Alton Fireworks To Launch From The Old Dam Area........

Alton's Fireworks Spectacular will dazzle hundreds of visitors to the Alton riverfront Tuesday evening.  This year, the show will be launched from a new location on the Missouri side of the river.

According to Bill Bojarzin of Central States Fireworks Inc. of Athens, Illinois, the new location is better for burning, as it is less risky being on gravel.

Starting around 9:30 pm, Central States will begin the show, which is slated to last around 30 minutes.  The new launch site is adjacent to the remnants of the old Lock and Dam  No.26 across the Mississippi River from Alton........

Toxic Algal Blooms May Be Lurking In The Water........

People looking to hit the water in Illinois as a way to beat the heat this week may be in danger, caused by a tiny organism floating in the water.

Recent weather conditions have provided the perfect breeding conditions for algal blooms in Illinois' waterways.  The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency advises that the blooms appear similar to blue-green oil slicks or paint spilled on the water.

The algal blooms emit a toxin that is able to be absorbed through the skin, ingested or inhaled from mist in the air.  Kin Biggs, a spokeswoman for the IEPA says that people with compromised immune systems, young children and the elderly are the ones most at risk........

Coast Guard urges safety during Fourth of July festivities

NEW ORLEANS – With the warmer weather and Fourth of July around the corner, there has been an increase in local boating traffic. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans wants to encourage all boaters to remain responsible while on the water.

Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in more than three-fourths of recreational boating fatalities in 2016, and that 83 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

A few helpful tips for a safe boating season include encouraging all boaters to wear life jackets, maintaining all necessary boater safety requirements, making a float plan, checking the weather frequently and staying hydrated.

Boaters, Don't Use Flares For Celebrations........

The U.S. Coast Guard is reminding boaters "not to use" emergency flares for celebrating the Fourth of July holiday, and they are offering other safety-related reminders as well.

The days on either side of the July 4th holiday are typically very busy on America's waterways and beaches, and history has shown an increase in Coast Guard responses this time of year.

The Coast Guard is advising beach goers to pay attention to currents and water conditions.  Kayakers and paddleboarders are advised to use beacons and use the buddy system when on the water........

St. Louis Area News

MDC offers Bear Necessities for Being Bear Aware program at Busch Conservation Area July 10

If bears are making a comeback to Missouri, we might as well learn more about them.

St. CHARLES, Mo.—It seems like bears are everywhere lately. They’ve made several appearances in the St. Louis region within the last month and as Missouri’s bear population continues to slowly expand, we’re likely to be seeing more of the Show-Me-State’s largest creatures.

To help educate area residents on black bears, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering a Bear Necessities for Being Bear Aware program at the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area Tuesday, July 10 from 5:30 -6:30 p.m. The event is open to families and all ages.

“It is important that people realize that bears are a significant part of Missouri’s history and our future landscape. We can live alongside them if we take the proper precautions,” said MDC Naturalist Nicki Wheaton.

The program will briefly cover the history of black bears in Missouri, what they look like, where they live, and their habits during the year. Participants will also learn what precautions people should take when living or partaking in recreational activities in bear country.

Wheaton said the most important take away message, especially for those who might not be able to attend, is “A fed bear is a dead bear.”

“When bears associate human dwellings as a place for food they often become nuisance bears, and may have to be euthanized,” she said.

Bear Necessities for Being Bear Aware is a free program, but advanced, online registration is required at https://tinyurl.com/ydbzsrku.

The August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area is located at 2360 Highway D in St. Charles, about two miles west of Highway 94.

Black bears, like this male who showed up in Warren County in May, 2016, are becoming more and more common in Missouri. Learn more about them at the Bear Necessities for Being Bear Aware program at the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area Tuesday, July 10 from 5:30 -6:30 p.m.

RiverBill says.... It's just a matter of time before we start seeing bears along the rivers in the St. Louis area, so we might as well learn more about them

On the Fourth of July, there will be a 25th Anniversary Great Flood Commemoration during the Quincy Independence Day events that will allow attendees the opportunity to remember and express appreciation for the efforts of the National Guard.

While Trolling The Internet....  We reeled in a short time-lapse video that captured four years worth of transformation at the St. Louis Gateway Arch Grounds and museum.

The video was shot by EarthCam, who had their cameras onsite from February 2014 and March 2018 in order to document every stage of the unique restoration project.

The Gateway Arch Grounds project was the largest public-private partnership in the history of the National Park Service.  The Arch Grounds are now more accessible than ever, and welcomes a new generation of visitors........

A Floating Teen Chased Up A Tree By An Alligator........

What began as a lazy day floating on a raft on a Florida creek turned into an extremely frightening afternoon for a 15 year old girl, who ended up hanging from a tree branch, trapped by an angry alligator.

The incident happened Friday near Alexander Springs Creek in the Ocala National Forest.  Deputies report that the teen was floating on a raft when the gator swam up, hissing and chased her up a tree.

Sergeant Mark Fulmer reports that the girl was able to stay out of the gator's reach until help arrived about a half hour later.  The gator had no fear of humans, and began to approach a deputy, so he ended up shooting it.

Officials say that gators are very territorial this time of year, as mating season is winding down.  When people approach a nest, the gators are very protective of their young........
