Hi Bill!
Look who I found at Hoppie's Marina, back for her first annual anniversary visit since her 1800-mile river trip from St. Paul, Minn. to New Orleans...Ashley Dechant!

She's using her artistic talent to paint a scene at Hoppies, which was her home for more than a month last year during the flood. During her visit, Ashley is planning on visiting her second-favorite marina, too. Woodland Marina!

See you on the river!

Drag Boat Racing This Weekend in Wheatland, Mo

Update........

Rather disappointed. Did fine early in the day, then dealt with a computer glitch in the timing system and back and forth for an hour. Kind of messed up our sequence and we flat got out run at the starting gate. I think we ended up approximately 4th so not that bad just not real proud. It is, I guess, what you would call what racing is and all about

Small Business Revolution:  Outdoor Business Inspired By Angler........

Some years ago, what began as a part time job for Whitney Allison ended up becoming not only her livelihood, but her passion as well.

Allison operates Alton's Bluff City Outdoors, formerly known as Bluff City Bait and Tackle, which is owned by her mother and stepfather, Felecia and Mark McMurray.  Recently, Bluff City Outdoors was tapped to be a featured business on Deluxe Corporation's Small Business Revolution.

Allison recalls that she wasn't interested in doing a "fishing thing", she needed a job.  As time passed, she asked her stepfather for more responsibility and is now running the business.  Allison notes that she has become an avid fisher-woman, and feels as if she is wasting time if she isn't enjoying the outdoors........

IDOT Closing MLK Bridge For A Year-Long Project........

The Illinois Department of Transportation recently announced that they will be closing the Martin Luther King Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at St. Louis for about a year for a construction project.

The recently passed Illinois budget for 2018-19 set aside over $36 million for the replacement of an old truss bridge that carries traffic from Interstates 64/55 to the MLK Bridge.

IDOT is expecting to begin construction work by the end of the summer.  The project will take approximately a year to complete, and the MLK Bridge will be closed for the majority of that time........

Update........

We had a nice safe trip to the track on Thursday. We were in our destination by 11 and got a good night's rest.

Not a bad day at all today (Friday). On our first run we were within 2000 of a second "too fast" for a perfect run. Slowed it down that did not work so set it back, ran again ended up with a 7.04 putting us in fifth position. We're very satisfied with where we stand.

House Committee Passed E15 Education Amendment........

The U.S. House Appropriations Committee recently passed an amendment to the Fiscal 2019 Interior, Environment and Related Agencies spending bill that calls on the Environmental Protection Agency to begin an E15 public education campaign.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association closely worked with the amendment's sponsor, U.S. Representative Andy Harris (R-MD-01).  The amendment highlights the issues that E15 causes to marine and small engines.

The amendment also instructs the EPA to begin a public education and outreach campaign to alert consumers to the dangers of E15.  The NMMA had met with Harris previously to outline issues that boaters face with E15, as well as the need for additional safeguards and education measures........

NMMA Battling Potential Trade War........

The National Marine Manufacturers Association is pushing the Trump Administration to resolve the tariff conflict as well as working with Congress on legislative solutions while keeping the public updated on the association's message.

The NMMA needs the help of the marine industry to guarantee that President Trump is aware of the effects the tariffs have on the recreational boating industry.

Currently, the marine industry is facing threats from steel and aluminum tariffs, anti-dumping and countervailing duties on Chinese aluminum sheet and tariffs on close to 300 marine related products........

Hi Bill,

Nanook, Mark Crance,

Bicycled 16,000 miles up down coast to coast twice! He has decided to conquer the waterways now by canoeing the Mississippi top to bottom.

Then riding again, he brought his bike with him. Hoppies look for him! Met him in the main channel by 521 Tuesday morning. He does have a Facebook page sharing his adventures.

Mississippi River Legislation

Bill Addresses Protecting Property From The River........

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed legislation requiring the prompt reconstruction and restoration of any levee damaged by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  The bill is heading to the Senate for deliberation.

The Water Resources and Development Act of 2018, including Congressman Jason Smith's (MO-08) amendment, will protect homes and farmland along Missouri banks of the Mississippi River.

Congressman Smith said that in 2011, the Corps activated the Birds Point Levee, inundating homes and farmland along the Mississippi River.  To make matters worse, it took the Corps some 18 months to return the levees back to it's original design specification........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Missouri's New Boat Wake Law Takes Effect In August........

Between the numerous lakes across Missouri, and the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, Missouri is a very popular lake for boating and fishing.

Homes line the shorelines in many of the coves on the Lake of the Ozarks and these property owners have raised concerns about the increasing size and frequency of boat wakes, which can damage the shoreline and property.

Legislators recently passed House Bill 2116, which makes three changes to Missouri law, including boat wake fines being set to $25, vessel owners being able to be fined for driver's violations, and more coves can be designated as no wake coves for larger vessels........

River History....

09 June 1910 in River History

US Congress passed the Motorboat Act.

The Motorboat Act of 1910 established a creditable boating safety program. The act required boats to be equipped with navigation lights, whistles, fire extinguishers, and life preservers. Although enforcement was a problem, the number of accidents immediately declined.

Second Fort Found At Fort Kaskaskia Historical Site........

For many years, historians thought that there was only one fort at the Fort Kaskaskia Historical site, which was used by both French and American troops.

Last year, the SIU Archaeology Department found that there were indeed two separate forts at the site, one for the French and one used by the Americans.

The American fort was in use from 1803 to 1806.  The most significant event in the American fort's history was that the Lewis and Clark Expedition visited the fort in 1803 to recruit 11 soldiers to join the expedition........

A Bikeway was opened over the McKinley Bridge.

In 2004, the Great Rivers Greenway District worked with the Metro East Park and Recreation District to make an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation to open up a bikeway/pedestrian access on the McKinley Bridge. This project was finished and officially opened up Saturday, 07 June 2008. They had a beautiful day for the festivities. This was the first pedestrian/bike trail over the Mississippi River in the St. Louis area.

Release of Updated National Levee Database........

Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opened the updated National Levee Database to the public.  This database is an active information source that offers visualization and search capabilities on the location and condition of levees across the nation.

According to  Eric C. Halpin, P.E., USACE deputy dam and levee safety officer says that the NLD allows the public to access information for them to understand the benefits and possible risks levees pose for the communities where they exist.

Halpin adds that the database now contains levee information from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers program, FEMA, as well as other state and federal agencies.  He notes that they will continue to work with other agencies to add information to the database........

Young Man Still Recovering After Nearly Losing His Leg........

During the 2017 Memorial Day Weekend, 12 year old Ashton Yates was gravely injured after a pontoon boat propeller cleaved his wrist and leg on Pinnacle Lake in Montgomery County, Mo

The amazing recovery Ashton has achieved over the past year has left even his doctors quite astonished, as the propeller sliced through the boy's muscles, nerves and tendons.

The boy progressed from a wheelchair, a walker, a leg brace, and now, just his sneakers.  Yates is now back to kicking around a soccer ball, jumping hurdles and running on a treadmill........

Hi Bill!

Just wanted to share this photo from the Heidelberg Boathouse established in 1925, with owner Georg Tsochanfaridis, right, and his son Rene. Built by Klaus Schechter, the boathouse offers customers 15 paddle boats, six motorboats and one row boat to experience the beauty of the Neckar River in Heidelberg all year round! Georg's son Julius, now studying hotel management, has also helped at the facility, not to forget Georg's beautiful wife, Karina, who has her own business in the beautiful city. And of course, the friendly Martin Schmidt also works at the boathouse, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025. Let's all meet there for a big party!

News Release From BoatUS

Women's Sailing Conference a Success

MARBLEHEAD, Mass. June 4, 2018 -- More than 100 women sailors, from amateur day sailors to experienced offshore cruisers came to the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, Massachusetts, on Saturday June 2 to share their expertise and learn new skills at the National Women’s Sailing Association (NWSA) Women's Sailing Conference. Participants, who came from 12 states, chose from 20 different classroom and on-water workshops.
The conference, now in its 17th year, was designed to meet the needs of women sailors who want to learn more, said event co-organizer Joan Thayer. "Women are taking a much more active role in running the whole boat, which includes transportation from your anchored boat to shore when you are cruising. One of our first workshops to completely fill up was Dinghy Captain.”
The day’s keynote speaker was offshore sailor, racer and first female commodore of the Cruising Club of America, Capt. Sheila McCurdy. On-water instruction took place aboard Colgate 26 and Sonar sailboats that were provided by Black Rock Sailing School and the Corinthian Yacht Club. Major supporters of the event included Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) and Black Rock Sailing School of Boston, Massachusetts.
All proceeds from the event’s silent auction and the sale of raffle tickets went to support the Women’s Sailing Foundation’s AdventureSail program and NWSA’s educational workshops for adult women sailors. AdventureSail introduces underserved girls aged 9-14 to sailing and lifelong skills.
The National Women’s Sailing Association is a program of the Women’s Sailing Foundation, a 501(c)(3) educational organization, whose mission is to enhance the lives of women and girls through education and access to the sport of sailing. For more information go to www.WomenSailing.org.

Mississippi River At Chester, Illinois

Bridge Work To Run Through November........

Officials are saying that the construction work on the Chester Bridge, which carries Route 51 over the Mississippi River, will likely continue through November 1, 2018.

Work on the project began on June 4.  Weather permitting, crews will be working from 7 am to 4 pm, and the lanes will be restricted during those periods.

The lanes are 20 feet wide, so many larger commercial vehicles might not be able to use the bridge.  The work areas will be marked with signs, and drivers are encouraged to use caution in the area........

Hi Bill,

Here's a little update on the "Current Reprieve"

Ramjet, Raven, You, and I had such a great adventure taking her from St Charles to Nassau.

Now she is in Trinidad after delays and stories we will never know.

After we delivered her to Nassau, Bahamas and the new crew took over, the starboard engine overheated, requiring major rework. This was done in Freeport.

It came back to the states, and she was loaded as deck cargo on a ship to Antigua.

Here are some pictures from Dexter of Off-loading in Antigua.

My hopes are to visit someday, and see her again in Trinidad.

Until then,
Greg

What a great week on the river! It's ebbing and flowing as it should, as it wishes. The Mississippi shall and always will. Grafton Ferry is still closed due to a bit of water on the landing.. Logs floating. Whole trees rolling gently, silently down river with the current. Wild life is in full mode and Boaters fill the waterscape. Live music echoing off the water from Grafton..The Boathouse rocking and sandbar is a party as usual! And of course, my favorite, AWESOME SUNSETS!!

Corps Focuses On River Restoration, Island Building........

Management of the Mississippi River is an ongoing fight for control, typically requiring drastic measures to preserve static banks and channels that defy the river's tendency to shift course as it deposits sediment along some shorelines and eating away at others.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is tasked with the nearly insurmountable challenge of reeling in the Mississippi River.  They are getting close to finalizing rather ambitious plans for controlling the river, and even creating islands near Alton, Illinois.

The project is intended to redirect water flow from the Mississippi River's main stream through an increasingly silted-in side channel as part of plans for restoring and improving habitat around Piasa and Eagle's Nest Islands, around six miles northwest of Alton........

Boat Flips During Lake Race........

Around 3:30 pm Saturday afternoon, a powerboat participating in Lake Race on the Lake of the Ozarks flipped while making a turn, ending up capsized.

The 32 foot Doug Wright catamaran, CR Racing, piloted by Rob Unnerstall and throttled by Casey Boaz was battling for 2nd place in the Super Stock class, when the vessel appeared to catch a wake and flipped to the starboard side.

CR Racing made a complete roll, coming to a stop upside down and began to sink.  Shortly after, both the driver and throttleman were spotted and pulled to safety........

Boat Manufacturer

Boats Included In Canada's Retaliatory Tariffs........

The National Marine Manufacturers Association reports that the decision to implement a 25 percent tariff on steel and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum imported from Canada, the European Union and Mexico has caused a trade war with all three.

Canada's Department of Finance recently announced that they would be imposing surtaxes or similar trade-restrictive countermeasures against imports from the U.S., including boats.

The Canadian countermeasures will take effect on July 1, 2018, and remain in effect until until the U.S. eliminates it's tariffs against Canada........
