New Radio Station........

Hey fellow boaters:

When you're boating you need to check out out new radio station called The Lake House. It's specifically designed for people boating on lakes and the river. A fellow boater curated all the music. He boats at Table Rock.

Just go to www.YoRadio.com and click either Download for Apple or Download for Android. Or you can just stream it on that site. I have been listening and there is some really good music..the app is pretty cool and it's free.

Human Remains Discovered Along The River Identified.........

Officials have determined that human remains discovered along the banks of the Mississippi River in a St. Louis County park last September belong to a man reported missing a few months earlier.

Officer Benjamin Granda, a spokesman for the St. Louis County Police Department, said that officers were called out to an area of North Highway 67 near the Lewis Bridge for a report of a suspicious vehicle.  Responders found an abandoned car along the embankment of the Missouri River.

The vehicle was linked to Christopher Harris.  A search of the area turned out no sign of Harris.  A few months later, the remains of a size 13 foot inside a shoe was found along the western bank of the Mississippi River at Bee Tree County Park.  On May 30, 2018, officials announced that DNA helped identify the foot as belonging to 27 year old Christopher Moore........

Bridge Camera System Is Operational........

Alton Police Chief Jake Simmons says that the license plate-reading camera system on the Clark Bridge at Alton, Illinois is fully operational.

Simmons says that the camera system was installed around six months ago, and several technological issues have been worked out.  He adds that the system has been operating at full capacity for a few weeks.

The idea of installing cameras on or around the bridge was brought to the public's attention back in September 2017 as a better way to track criminals entering the Riverbend region........

U.S. 67 Bridge Work Means Lane Restrictions........

Starting Friday, traffic on the U.S. 67 Bridge spanning the Illinois River at Beardstown, Illinois will be reduced to just one lane.

The lane closure is necessary to allow crews to patch the road deck and make repairs to expansion joints.  The repair work is expected to be wrapped up by September 16.

The Illinois Department of Transportation reports that traffic flow will be controlled by signals that will allow for one alternating lane of traffic in each direction........

News Release From BoatUS

National Fishing and Boating Week June 2-10

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 29, 2018 – The start of the traditional summer boating season also brings the annual kick-off of National Fishing and Boating Week, June 2–10, designed to highlight the importance of these two recreational activities. Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) has these five ways to celebrate:
1. The next time you head out on the water, take someone boating, fishing or sailing who has never done it before. Let them experience the same fun you have aboard your boat.
2. Find the time to teach someone how to run a powerboat, how to sail, or how to catch a fish. It’s an activity that can last a lifetime and keeps families together.
3. If you don’t have a boat, TakeMeFishing.org offers some ways to celebrate the week and to get out on the water, as well as free fishing days (days you can fish without a license) offered by many states.
4. Learn to Fish: Watch instructional videos and read tips from pros on how to cast, tie knots, and make fishing rigs at the takemefishing.org “How to Fish” section.
5. If you are new to boating, BoatUS has all the information you need on how to select and find a boat that’s right for you and be safe on the water at BoatUS.com/NewToBoating. Or visit www.Youtube.com/BoatUS to learn basic boat-handling and fishing skills.

U.S. Coast Guard

2017 Recreational Boating Statistics Report Released........

On Tuesday, the U.S. Coast Guard released their 2017 Recreational Boating Statistics report, which revealed that that boating fatalities decreased by 6.1 percent from 2016 to 658.

Between 2016 and 2017, recreational boating injuries also decreased by 9.4 percent, from 2,903 to 2,629.  The total number of accidents decreased as well, falling from 4,463 to 4,291.

The report also shows however, that this was the second-highest number of fatalities on record over the past five years.  Captain Scott Johnson, chief of the Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety at Coast Guard Headquarters, said that the lower numbers are encouraging, but more can be done........

Constant Vigilance
May 28, 2018 ~ jalsails

Bald Eagles’ Aerie. Symbols of constant and eternal vigilance. They are there. Memorial Day, 2018, Photo JAL

Memorial Day weekend is here in the climate-confused Midwest where we are setting records for the hottest May Days outside of Hades. Choosing something to wear should be easy as nothing, fits. Nature crash and burned spring straight into the dog days of August. Nary a breeze can lift herself from the oppressive sun. The wind has sucummed to an overdose of humidity. Undaunted and perhaps unwisely, we spent the weekend aboard our sailboat, Ex Libris on the Mississippi River.

Meanwhile, our son Barrett, hopped a ferry from LA to Catalina where the winds were fresh, the seas were calm, and small boat rentals were affordable. Randall opted for the grand opening of his community pool much to the delight of my grand daughters who initiated the first swim of summer vacation.

Amberley explored fiords in southwestern Norway. It’s a country where where summer lasts for 23 minutes and SPF 200 is not adequate sun protection for the locals. As you can see by her photo of Bergan, the Norwegian harbors are just like the Alton Pool’s except ours’ are the color and consistency of coffee dregs.

Uncertainty About Tariffs Weighing On Marine Industry........

Early last week, the Trump Administration announced that they would be suspending tariffs on China, only to change direction with the announcement that it would be moving forward with aluminum and steel tariffs on China.

Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association said that commenting on the situation is difficult, as it is changing every day.

U.S. steel prices have risen ahead of the June 1 deadline for several major exporting countries to negotiate deals that would at least in part exempt them from the proposed 25 percent steel tariff........

During 2017, officers made 145 arrests of boaters for operating under the influence.  Cross adds that it is imperative to remain sober, or to make sure there is a designated driver aboard........

Stay Sober And Wear Your Life Jackets........

The Illinois Conservation Police are reminding boat operators to remain sober, and those aboard boats to wear their life jackets as Illinois' busiest boating season starts with the Memorial Day Weekend.

Illinois Conservation Police Chief Rafael Gutierrez says that wearing life jackets can save your life, and it is against the law to operate a vessel under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Gutierrez stated that Conservation Police Officers will be patrolling the waterways in Illinois all summer long to encourage boaters to enjoy their time on the water, and remain safe........

Boat Explosion....  Only Minor Injuries Reported....

At around 12:30 pm Sunday, a boat exploded near the fuel pumps at the Green Turtle Bay area on Lake Barkley.  Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officials report that a man and wife were aboard a 32 foot vessel that had just refueled when it exploded.

Yamaha:  New Engine Should Ease Supply Shortage........

Yamaha is predicting that demand for their new 425 HP XTO Offshore outboard engine will help alleviate supply shortages it has with it's 2.8 liter, 4.2 liter V6 engines and 5.3 liter V8 outboard engines.

Yamaha anticipates that they will be able to meet demand for the new engine.  The company has faced widespread shortages of other outboard engines on account of unprecedented demand while the company's manufacturing operations were "in transition".

Ben Speciale, the president of Yamaha Marine says that as the company alters their product family, they think that there could be a shift from triple engines to twin installations........

MSHP Warns Of Dangers Around Boat Docks........

Colonel Sandra Karsten superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol is urging boat dock owners to take the necessary precautions to make their dock safe from stray electrical currents.

Numbness and tingling in the extremities while swimming has been a common statement made by the survivors of incidents involving electrical current in the water near docks.

The safest course of action is to swim away from any dock suspected to be charged with electricity.  Swimming to another nearby dock or exiting the water at the shore a safe distance from the electrically charged dock would be the alternative........

Illinois' Water Usage Stamps Going Away........

Illinois recently announced that the state was doing away with their Water Usage Stamps, meaning that if a vessel does not have a motor, a sticker will not be necessary to float it on an Illinois river, lake or pond.

The Water Usage Stamps were required for anyone in Illinois who has a boat or other watercraft to be legal while on Illinois waters.  The changes will take effect on June 1.

Ed Cross, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said that boats with motors will still need to be registered........

News Release From BoatUS

3 Mistakes Boaters Don't Want to Make with a DSC-VHF Radio

ANNAPOLIS, Md., May 24, 2018 – For recreational boaters, sailors and anglers, having a Digital Selective Calling (DSC) VHF radio aboard to call for emergency help will always be the fastest way to summon assistance from your closest rescuers. That means that going without one can hurt your chances for a safe summer on the water. Here are three common mistakes boat owners make with DSC-VHF radios and some simple ways to improve safety aboard your boat.

Mistake #1: Relying on an old VHF radio to signal that you are in distress

If you are using a VHF radio that was manufactured more than 15 years ago, you’re relying on old technology. There’s probably not a person around that regularly uses a 15-year-old phone, television set or computer. Today’s DSC-VHF radios have new lifesaving features, most importantly a distress button that can hail a mayday and relay your position to rescue authorities — all at the push of one little red (distress) button on the face of the radio. BoatUS has some help to set up your new DSC-VHF radio at BoatUS.com/SettingUpDSCRadio.

Mistake #2: Thinking you don’t need to bother to register a DSC-VHF and get an MMSI number

A Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number is a unique registration number that is assigned to your vessel to be used with the vessel’s DSC-VHF radio. MMSI numbers are issued by organizations including BoatUS which offer the service at no cost to members or for a nominal $25 fee for non-members. The MMSI must be entered into the radio in order to harness all of its power and lifesaving technology. Registering your radio gives potential rescuers important information about you, your boat and whom to contact in an emergency.

Mistake #3: Not reading the owner’s manual that came with your radio and familiarizing yourself with your radio’s features

Your DSC-VHF radio manual contains a ton of great information about the features of your radio and how to install it. If your radio is not properly installed or not connected to your boat’s GPS or chartplotter, you’re shortchanging yourself and perhaps unknowingly putting yourself and your crew in danger if there is a delay in transmission and emergency response.

Digital Selective Calling technology can also make your everyday boating better. In addition to being able to send a distress signal with the press of a button, a DSC-VHF radio can privately hail other DSC-VHF-equipped vessels or groups of boats without tying up VHF channel 16, the distress, safety and calling frequency. It also allows you to ‘ring’ (hail) others if you know their MMSI numbers without them having to monitor a particular channel.

If you haven’t yet purchased a DSC-VHF radio, make it one of your safety-gear equipment priorities this season. To learn more DSC-VHF radios, take a free online DSC-VHF radio tutorial at www.BoatUS.org/DSC. The course is provided by the 501(c)(3) BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water and funded by BoatUS members.

Channel Cat Water Taxi

Mississippi River At Davenport, Iowa

Channel Cat Starting Their Summer Season........

On Friday, the Quad Cities' water taxi, the Channel Cat, will be opening it's season.  This year, the Channel Cat will offer a unique vantage point for people to check out the construction work on the new Interstate 74 bridge.

MetroLINK, who oversees the Channel Cat operations, believes that the Interstate 74 construction project will boost the number of riders aboard the water taxi this year.

Jennifer Hirsch, manager of administration for MetroLINK says that she expects to see similar passenger numbers to last year, if not more.  Last seasons' ridership numbers for last year were 45,000 passengers for the season........

RiverBill,

Someone pushed the barricades to the side at the Alton boat ramp. Looked too low to launch a big boat and pool is going down. Also a rock barge has been positioned out in front of casino for at least a week.

Bill,

Here is a picture of all the past commodores at the Past Commodores party at Pole Star last weekend. Great party thanks to Mark Foppe, Past Commodore and his love wife, First Lady Jennie Foppe. Thanks to D Dock DJ (Scott Hickey, Craig Treadway) for the wonderful music, Bill and Linda Mixon for the wonderful BBQ, last but not least thanks to Peter Tully at Pole Star for letting Con Trios Yacht Club to host the party.

We were rained on but did not stop us from having a great time.

Take care
Maureen

MSHP Issues Warning Ahead Of Memorial Day........

This Memorial Day Weekend, there will be a lot of people hitting the lakes and rivers in their boats.  Just a few days ago, three people were killed on the Lake of the Ozarks, and this weekend, the lake will be packed.

The Lake Ozark Fire Protection District has two rescue boats on the lake, one stationed at Mile Marker one and the second at Mile Marker 16.  Responders are hoping that they will not have to use them this weekend.

This week is National Safe Boating Week and the Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers have been visiting lakes across the state performing vessel inspections and assisting with getting people ready for the boating season........

News Release From BoatUS

2018 Top 10 Boat Names Released

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 23, 2018 – Boat names can reveal a lot about the personality, passion and life experiences of a boat owner. This year, BoatUS decoded the most popular boat names ordered through its online boat graphics and lettering service at BoatUS.com/BoatGraphics, producing a revealing list of the Top 10 Boat Names of 2018.
1. Grace – This name reflects the elegant and tranquil qualities of the boat, oftentimes owned by someone seeking peace through boating.
2. Freedom – A patriot to its core, this boat symbolizes the meaning of freedom in all senses of the word: freedom to explore, freedom to dream and freedom to discover the world by water being most important.
3. Seas the Day – While this boat owner may feel a loss of control over a declining retirement account, he or she is completely in charge while boating and intends to get the most out of the boating lifestyle.
4. Therapy – Capitalizing on all the joys boating has to offer, this name takes into account the healing nature that boating provides its owner.
5. Second Wind – This boat is perhaps owned by parents constantly yearning for that second boost of energy in life. Spending time with their boat gives them rejuvenation despite the craziness of being mom or dad.
6. Serenity – Born out of the “hippie era,” this name illustrates peacefulness in both the boat and the owner. Simply explained, this boat owner is completely untroubled while out on the water.
7. Perseverance – A relentless vehicle that never stops exploring, this boat likely has more than 10 years on it with a few dents and scratches but also holds countless memories of good times.
8. Rum Runner – A party boat by nature, this boat often hosts big personalities and guarantees a good time with laughs galore.
9. Knot on Call – The moment a boater steps onto this boat, his or her responsibilities are left at the dock. The owner enjoys and encourages leaving worries behind and fully immersing in the boating experience.
10. Pura Vida – More than just a Costa Rican saying meaning “pure life,” it reflects a way of everyday living by example – one that thrives on no worries, no fuss and no stress.
The BoatUS Boat Graphics and Lettering service offers a free library of more than 9,000 boat names and also allows boaters to easily custom design their own boat lettering or graphics through an easy-to-use online design tool. For more information, visit www.BoatUS.com/Graphics.

*BONUS LIST:
The following names were voted most humorous boat names of 2018 by the editors of BoatUS Magazine:
1. Shenanigans – Good or bad, they’re obviously up to something.
2. Reel Nauti – The ultimate play on words in the marine dictionary.
3. Flounder Pounder – Let’s see the proof, buddy!
4. Kale Yeah – Clearly owned by a proud health nut.
5. Shaken Not Stirred – They know what we like!
6. Ship Happens – We can all relate to this one, can’t we?
7. Bite Me – Ferocious on land – on the water, too?
8. Mojo Risin’ – Stepping onto that boat instantly increases any boater’s mojo.
9. Jolly Toots – Not quite sure what this means, but it’s fun to say!
10. Penny Pincher – Someone may have named his or her boat too quickly after buying it.

NMMA, Congress Hold Press Conference On E15........

The NMMA recently held a press conference with Congressman Austin Scott (R-GA) and Congresswoman Lois Frankel (D-FL) about their new legislation, the Consumer Protection and Fuel Transparency Act of 2018 (H.R 5855).

The press conference was held along the Washington D.C. waterfront at the Washington Marina Company.  Representatives Scott and Frankel both spoke on the importance of the bi-partisan legislation, and why it is crucial for boaters and consumers.........

Corps Calling For Comments On L&D No.7 Weir Construction........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is asking the public for comments on a proposal for the construction of a weir upstream of the auxiliary lock chamber at Lock and Dam No.7 near La Crosse, Wisconsin.

This construction project is intended to lower the outdraft velocities at the upper end of the lock chamber, which is a threat to safe navigation.

Outdraft is the river current which pushes vessels away form the lock wall toward the auxiliary lock and the gated section of the dam.  The weir is designed to slow the velocity of the outdraft, minimizing the possibility of vessels striking the dam structure........
