Corps Concerned About Sediment In The River........

The results of a study that looked at the effects of moving sediment from Lewis and Clark Lake in Yankton, North Dakota through the Gavins Point Dam along the Missouri River could be released later this year.

According to Paul Boyd, a hydraulic engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the study was driven by habitat development for endangered species.

Boyd said that a big component of the study is looking at the effects of sediment flow from the upstream reservoir system into the Lower Missouri River........

Sailboat Washed Ashore....  Search On For Missing Man....

At around 9:30 am Sunday morning, an unoccupied sailboat washed ashore along the Mississippi River near Camp Lacupolis, Minnesota, which is north of Wabasha, Minnesota.

A passer-by discovered the boat running and without a pilot at Camp Lacupolis on Sunday morning.  Responders are searching for a missing 61 year old man from Pepin, Wisconsin.

According to Chief Deputy Jim Warren of the Wabasha County Sheriff's Office says that the man was reportedly going to take the boat on a test run prior to the beginning of the season and overnight in the vessel along the channel........

The Cal Fremling Boat Returned To The Riverfront........

Recently, the educational boat, the Cal Fremling returned to Levee Park along the Mississippi Riverfront at Winona, Minnesota.  The vessel's return was celebrated with an open house.

The Cal Fremling allows students to perform hands-on research aboard the boat.  Norb Thomes, the vessel's teaching and technology coordinator says that they feel that this allows students to learn more, and retain that knowledge longer.

The Cal Fremling is a floating classroom for the Winona State students as well as the community.  A theater and art group had taken the vessel on a voyage in order to learn about sunlight and how the sun's angles affect colors........

Calling All Boaters

We need your support and action to mobilize and save the Delta Queen.

SAVE THE DELTA QUEEN ....4-13-18 update

The vote we have been seeking appears to be moving forward next week. In speaking to the house transportation and infrastructure staff it was indicated the house would “work with the senate” regarding the DQ language if it was part of the coast guard authorization bill [ S1129]. In checking S1129 the Delta Queen language that was originally passed as S89 is not in the current version of the bill.
So, team we need to let the senate committee “commerce, science and transportation” know that we the people want the S89 language added to S1129. The committee chair is Sen John Thune from Alaska. We can call bill sponsors, professional staff and the two Missouri senators that sponsored the original S89 bill to make sure they do all they can to get the S89 language added.
Timing is critical Sen Thune has told the press the bill will be voted on next week. The added language could be a floor amendment. We could be celebrating next week.

Minor Flooding Expected Along The Mississippi River........

While the eastern portions of Iowa have not received much rainfall during April, the snow pack from several rounds of heavy snow in Minnesota has begun melting.  The water is funneled into the Mississippi River, which is on the rise in northeastern Iowa.

There are flood warnings for the eastern portions of Iowa, from Guttenburg down to the Quad Cities region.  The Mississippi River is not expected to rise much past flood stage and will start to recede later in the week........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis Is Starting To Warm To The Mississippi River........

After decades of neglect, an increasing number of St. Louisans are looking to the Mississippi River and seeing the potential along the riverfront.

Even as the Arch Grounds renovation project is winding down, the Mississippi River is still viewed as dirty, dangerous and not a place for recreation

The riverfront was at one time entirely given over to industry, but there are renewed efforts to draw city residents and tourists alike to the river through new investment in multimillion dollar projects.

There are already signs of minor flooding within the Minnesota River Basin located southwest of Minneapolis.  The fishing docks and walking paths at riverfront paths are already under several inches of water.

News Release

EMPHASIS: Troop B To Conduct Enforcement Operations On Mark Twain Lake

Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces sometime during the month of May 2018, troopers will conduct an enforcement saturation on Mark Twain Lake. The purpose of the saturation is to detect hazardous boating violations and remove impaired boaters from the waterway.
"Special enforcement operations such as these enable the Missouri State Highway Patrol to enhance our efforts in removing dangerous boat operators from our waterways," stated Captain Wilt. "Operating a boat in a dangerous manner or while impaired endangers everyone who enjoys our state’s waterways."
Captain Wilt urges boaters and lakegoers to help law enforcement efforts to apprehend impaired or dangerous boaters. If you suspect a boater is impaired or observe a boat being driven in an erratic manner, contact the nearest law enforcement agency. The Highway Patrol toll-free numbers for reporting emergencies are 1-800-525-5555 or cellular *55.
Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others. Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It! Follow Troop B on Twitter for the most current news @MSHPTrooperB

Revised Flood Maps Taking Effect........

Earlier this month, changes took effect that could have thousands of Camden County property owners saving more than $3 million annually on federal flood insurance.

A few years ago, the FEMA Region VII office in Kansas City began a review of the 2011-era Flood Insurance Rate Map for the Lake of the Ozarks region, which has led to a revision to the flood plain maps for portions of Camden, Miller and Morgan counties.

Officials say that the portions of Camden County most affected include parts of the Big Niangua, Little Niangua and Linn Creek.  It is estimated that over 3,800 properties are affected........

Missouri Fishing News
Man Snags Record Blue Sucker........

The Missouri Department of Conservation has reported that Bonnots Mill resident Bryant Rackers has become the latest Missouri record-breaking fisherman in Missouri after snagging a blue sucker on the Osage River.

The alternative method record fish was snagged on April 21.  It was 30 inches long, and weighed in at 9 pounds, 1 ounce.  Rackers fish bested the old state record blue sucker which weighed in at 7 pounds, 6 ounces and was caught in 1980.

Rackers said that he knew that he had taken several nice fish, but didn't think much about it until he weighed the larger blue sucker.  He checked online and realized that he had the new state record fish........

Boating History
A Look At The History Of The Sea Doo........

At this point in time, it is difficult to remember a time when personal watercraft were not zipping along waterways.  They are the perfect on-water vehicle for up to three people to enjoy speed on the water.

Sea Doo is one of the most widely recognized personal watercraft brands on the water.  The company actually pioneered the personal watercraft in America in the late 1960s.

The Sea Doo brand is part of the Bombardier Recreational Products stable, and they made their first attempt at marketing a personal watercraft in 1968........

MarineMax:  We Believe Sea Ray Will Sell As A Single Entity........

MarineMax is the largest retailer of Sea Ray boats.  The company believes that Sea Ray parent company, Brunswick Corp. recognizes the importance of keeping the brand together in order to preserve Sea Ray's legacy and success.

Bill McGill, CEO of MarineMax notes that the majority of Brunswick's portfolio is not Sea Ray. He adds that Sea Ray is not the sizable part of the lineup like it was a few years ago.

Brunswick had announced their plans for selling Sea Ray back in December.  The company had operated Sea Ray for almost a year at a loss.  They expect to lose $40 million in the transaction........

Fishing News From Rend Lake

HOOAH Hosted Veterans Fishing Trip........

The men and women that serve our country overseas sometimes come home with trauma and experiences that can be difficult to deal with.

On Friday, the Healing of our American Heroes organization hosted a fishing trip at Rend Lake as a way to bring Veterans together for a day on the water with people who understand.

Tom Gaither, coordinator of HOOAH's operations in southern Illinois said that they host between 120 and 140 Veterans each year for outdoor activities such as golfing, hunting and fishing........

A Paddle Boat Cruise Is A Great Way To Spend A Day On The River........

When it comes to cruising Missouri's waterways and lakes, there are plenty of options.  Unfortunately, there are few riverboats that use old-fashioned paddles as a means of propulsion.

For those looking for an authentic riverboat ride, just head to Hannibal where you can take a ride aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat, which has been offering sightseeing tours along the Mississippi River for the past 30 years.

The Mark Twain Riverboat offers both sightseeing and a dinner cruise every evening.  The dinner cruises are especially popular, as they allow passengers to view the majestic sunsets over the Mississippi River........

News Release From BoatUS

Save a Kid's Life This Summer: Become a Life Jacket Loaner Site

ANNAPOLIS, Md., April 25, 2018 – A simple way to save a kid’s life is to ensure they have a life jacket when they go boating, sailing or fishing. But sometimes, it’s not easy to borrow a right-sized life jacket when an infant or young teen comes aboard. Marinas, boat and fishing clubs, waterfront businesses, organizations or other groups that serve boaters can help by becoming a BoatUS Foundation Life Jacket Loaner site.
Becoming a loaner site is easy by applying at BoatUS.org/Life-Jacket-Loaner. There is no cost to set up a loaner site, and there is never a charge to borrow a life jacket.
Approved locations will receive a kit containing 12 child-sized life jackets with sizes from infant to youth, as well as signage and a local publicity kit. The non-profit BoatUS Foundation, funded by donations from the more than half-million members of BoatUS, replenishes the supply of jackets as wear and tear takes its toll.
The only task loaner sites have is to track life jacket usage with an easy clipboard sign-out system and provide the Foundation with periodic feedback to help keep the life jacket supply in good condition.
The program currently has more than 550 life jacket loaner sites across the US that collectively loan out children’s life jackets more than 140,000 times each year. Since 1997, three children’s lives have been saved by a BoatUS Foundation loaner life jacket. To learn more, go to www.BoatUS.org/Life-Jacket-Loaner. A short video on how to select a right-sized kid’s life jacket at BoatUS.org/Life-Jacket-Loaner/Fit-Video.

Mississippi River Flooding Outlook

Upper Mississippi River Levels Rising........

Later this week, the Upper Mississippi River is expected to rise out of it's banks.  According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the river will rise past flood stage at Wabasha on Thursday, as it passes 12 feet.

Further downstream, the Mississippi River at Winona is predicted to reach the 13 foot flood stage at Winona on Sunday morning, and by Sunday evening, it will rise to 13.3 feet.

The NWS reports that the heavy snowfalls from earlier in the month are melting, which is causing the Mississippi River to rise, and Sunday's 13.3 foot level may not be the end of the flooding........

Minneapolis Locks Closed To Recreational Vessel Traffic........

Tuesday morning, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District shut down the Lower St. Anthony Falls locks and Lock and Dam No.1 to recreational vessel traffic due to high water flows.

Michael Derusha, lockmaster at both locks and dams, says that as of 6 am Tuesday morning, water flows of over 32,000 cubic feet per second were moving through the Lower St. Anthony Falls Dam.  Derusha adds that the procedure is to close the locks to recreational traffic once flows exceed 30,000 cfs.  The locks will remain open to commercial traffic.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Mississippi Valley lock and dam regulation manual requires that locks are closed to recreational traffic when flows reach 30,000 cfs.  The locks will close to commercial traffic when water flows reach 40,000 cfs........

The Ohio River at Jeffersonville, Indiana

Jeffboat of Jeffersonville, Indiana, launched their last barge into the Ohio River on April 23, 2018 ending a ship building tradition that has been going on since the 1800's.  The company is closing it's doors for good due to a massive decline in the ship building industry.

Illinois River History

The River Was The Original Way To Move Goods........

During the 19th century, the Illinois River's natural habitats supported a variety of fish and mussel species, which jump-started the fishing industry between Havana and Meredosia, southwest of Peoria.

The towns had their own markets for processing the fish, which they shipped to larger Midwest and Eastern cities between the 1890s and the 1950s.

As the demand for goods increased, so did the need for ways to transport to those goods, which changed life along the river.  Massive engineering projects made the Illinois River navigable, and the construction of the Michigan Canal in 1848 linked Lake Michigan with the Illinois River, and ultimately, the Mississippi River........

As you can see, #reducing your plastic will have a MUCH more significant, positive impact over #recycling it. Because if you don't buy/use it in the first place, you can skip the recycling part altogether! How are you reducing your plastic???

Fort de Chartres' Powder Magazine Made Top 10 Illinois Building List........

According to an online poll driven by the Illinois bicentennial, the Fort de Chartres' powder magazine was recently named as one of the top ten buildings in Illinois.

Fort de Chartres' powder magazine building is considered to be the oldest building in Illinois.  It dates back to the 1750s, and is part of the larger fort, located along the Mississippi River in Randolph County.

The large stone fort was the last of three French forts named de Chartres.  It was constructed in 1753, and was preceded by three wooden forts, beginning in 1720........

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fort de Chartres was a fortification built by the French in 1720 along the east bank of the Mississippi River, in what is present day Illinois.  The fort was used as the administrative center for the Illinois Territory.  Thanks to flooding along the Mississippi River, the fort was rebuilt twice, the last time in 1750 utilizing locally sourced limestone........
Calling All Boaters
We need your support and action to mobilize and save the Delta Queen.
SAVE THE DELTA QUEEN ....4-13-18 update
The vote we have been seeking appears to be moving forward next week. In speaking to the house transportation and infrastructure staff it was indicated the house would “work with the senate” regarding the DQ language if it was part of the coast guard authorization bill [ S1129]. In checking S1129 the Delta Queen language that was originally passed as S89 is not in the current version of the bill.
So, team we need to let the senate committee “commerce, science and transportation” know that we the people want the S89 language added to S1129. The committee chair is Sen John Thune from Alaska. We can call bill sponsors, professional staff and the two Missouri senators that sponsored the original S89 bill to make sure they do all they can to get the S89 language added.
Timing is critical Sen Thune has told the press the bill will be voted on next week. The added language could be a floor amendment. We could be celebrating next week.
"Tug pushing big bargeline just passed. Everything normal except for one bright pink barge! It's heading towards Alton and pinky is on the mo side of line"
Unified Command Continues Response To Fuel Oil Spill........
On Monday, a Unified Command composed of the U.S. Coast Guard, the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinators Office, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and Iver Ships continued their response to the discharge of heavy fuel oil from the foreign flagged Iver Exporter near Norco, Louisiana.
Originally, it was estimated that 2,600 gallons of fuel oil was spilled into the river, however, that estimate was revised downwards to 1,400 gallons.  The source of the leak has been secured, and the Iver Exporter is currently moored at the Shell Norco Manufacturing Complex.
Responders with the Unified Command are conducting overflights, on water and shoreline assessments.  They have discovered that the shoreline between Mississippi River Mile Markers 122 and 126 has been affected by the spill.  There has been no reports of wildlife impacts or injuries........
SAVE THE DELTA QUEEN ....4-13-18 update
The vote we have been seeking appears to be moving forward next week. In speaking to the house transportation and infrastructure staff it was indicated the house would “work with the senate” regarding the DQ language if it was part of the coast guard authorization bill [ S1129]. In checking S1129 the Delta Queen language that was originally passed as S89 is not in the current version of the bill.
So, team we need to let the senate committee “commerce, science and transportation” know that we the people want the S89 language added to S1129. The committee chair is Sen John Thune from Alaska. We can call bill sponsors, professional staff and the two Missouri senators that sponsored the original S89 bill to make sure they do all they can to get the S89 language added.
Timing is critical Sen Thune has told the press the bill will be voted on next week. The added language could be a floor amendment. We could be celebrating next week.
Fourth Graders Learn About The River First Hand........
On Wednesday, Missouri River Relief hosted their second part of Missouri River Days for the 2017 - 2018 school year.  The event brings Columbia's fourth graders to the Missouri River, and offers them hands-on opportunities for them to learn about the river, and the surrounding ecosystems.
The program boasts four immersive educational stations along the Missouri River.  One station had the children sit along the river bank, observe the wildlife and bluffs, and then create water color paintings of the river landscape.
Fourth grade teacher Nikki Kunkel said that the students have been studying Lewis and Clark and this field trip offers students an immersive experience.  She adds that man of the kids have never been on a boat or out in nature.........
