From Wikipedia Encyclopedia:

The Jamie Whitten Lock and Dam (formerly named Bay Springs Lock and Dam) is part of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway (popularly called the Tenn-Tom). It is located in south Tishomingo County, Mississippi, United States, close to the Prentiss County line.

It is the northernmost lock and dam on the Tenn-Tom, and was completed at a cost of US$75 million. The lock is the fourth-highest single lift lock in the United States, and raises and lowers barges 84 feet (26 m). The dam forms Bay Springs Lake.

Originally named Bay Springs Lock and Dam, the structure was renamed for Jamie Whitten, who served Mississippi in the United States House of Representatives for over 50 years (as of 2008, Whitten had the longest tenure of any Representative in history).

The Picture of the Day... was sent to us by Capt'n Michael Hentrich

Wanted to let you know that after nearly 5 years ny dad, Fred Hentrich, has finished construction of the 1:60 replica of the Spanish Galleon “Apostol Felipe” This ship was one of 6 galleons constituting the “Silver Galleons” built for King Felipe IV of
Spain. She made her maiden voyage in 1629 transporting goods and treasures from various areas of the Spanish Empire to the mainland.

The detail on this ship is fantastic, definitely worth a long look. The ‘ol boy did one heck of a job on her!!

Fred Hentrich is also known by his close friends as Otis Goat:).  He will be 80 years old and is managing Parkinson's disorder, which I am sure he would not want broadcast, but makes the completion of this all that much more appreciated as he has difficulty with fine delicate movements some times. You will NEVER hear him complain....He's a Great guy!!

I built the display case for him and it is in their home which could be considered a public place as it is the hub of a lot of activity!!

Thanks

Mike Hentrich

Big Sunflower River Named Most Endangered........

According to the environmental group American Rivers, there is a tributary of the Mississippi River that is the most endangered in the nation, after an old flood drainage plan was rejuvinated.

American Rivers claims that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' plans for mitigating flooding in the Mississippi River Delta is a threat to the Big Sunflower River, as well as 200,000 acres of surrounding wetlands.  On Tuesday, the group named the Big Sunflower River as the most endangered river in the nation for 2018.

For years, the flood mitigation project had been championed by U.S. Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi, however, the project was though to have died once the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency vetoed the plan in 2008........

River Personalities

River Captain Has Had Many Adventures........

Over the years, licensed boat captain Gary Neff of Burlington, Iowa has had a variety of jobs, but he always wanted to be on the river.  During the time he was working as a captain, he had the chance to help move a WW II era LST from Evansville, Indiana to Texas.

While operating in a dense fog near Vicksburg, the vessel lost all power in the pilot house, and ended up drifting toward a bridge.  A technician was able to briefly restore power, only to loose it once again.  Neff spotted a "Day" light back up river, so he turned to boat toward the light.  Repairs were made as the LST idled in the river.

Currently, Neff is working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers out of the St. Louis office, and he is heading up the crew frantically working to make repairs at Lock and Dam No.26 at Alton, Illinois in time for the navigation season to begin.

The work is time sensitive, so despite poor weather conditions, Neff and the crew are deep in the bottom of the lock chamber, making repairs to the large steel and concrete lock doors.  These repairs need to be completed before barges can move through........

The Corps Has Adjusted Missouri River Releases........

Over the past two weeks, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers increased releases from the Upper Missouri River Reservoirs, as part of their management of the system for the spring runoff season.

As of last Tuesday, the Corps announced that there is a considerable amount of space for water storage in the Missouri River reservoirs.

Kevin Grode, a team leader in the Army Corps of Engineers Missouri River Basin Water Management, Northwestern Division in Omaha, says that the runoff forecast for the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City is 30.2 million acre-feet, which is 119 percent of normal........

The Missouri Confluence includes four major watersheds in the state of Missouri – the Lower Missouri River, the Meramec River, the Gasconade River, and a 34-mile stretch of the Middle Mississippi River – and drains approximately 17,880 square miles. Suburban development, agriculture, massive livestock operations, and mining threaten these rivers. Additionally, overdevelopment of floodplains and overbuilt levees have contributed to a drastic increase in the frequency and severity of damaging floods in the region. As a whole, the iconic Missouri River flows from the mountains of western Montana and is fed by a vast watershed that touches ten states and two Canadian provinces before finally meeting the Mississippi River near the city of St. Louis, Missouri. The Missouri River is the longest river in the United States. In terms of total drainage area, its watershed covers approximately one sixth of the continental United States and is second only to the Mississippi, to which it serves as the principal tributary. Together, these two mighty rivers form the fourth largest river system in the world and serve as one of the most important waterways in North America for transportation, industry, and recreation.

A native of St. Louis, Rachel Bartels grew up exploring Missouri’s creeks, rivers, and the wild spaces in between. She returned to her hometown in 2016 after spending 13 years surfing and sailing the waters of San Diego. While in California, Rachel served as the Director of Finance for Nature and Culture International and as the Chief Financial Officer for San Diego Coastkeeper where she discovered the power of citizen-based advocacy and the strength of the Waterkeeper movement. With a background in accounting and tech and a passion for clean water, Rachel has dedicated her life to water issues. In San Diego she volunteered with the International Rescue Committee educating refugees about water use and conservation related to farming in Southern California, and volunteered with Outdoor Outreach teaching at-risk youth to surf and be stewards of the oceans. Rachel leads data science projects related to predictive modeling of water quality data and flooding, and volunteers teaching middle and high school girls to code. Sea Tow Continuing Beacon Rental Program........

Are you getting ready to take that big trip ?

The Sea Tow foundation, which is a not-for-profit entity committed to promoting safe boating practices, and ACR Electronics recently announced that they will be continuing their keystone Beacon Rental Program.

The program allows boaters across the nation to have convenient and affordable access to Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) and Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs).

These emergency beacons are used in emergency situations to alert search and rescue personnel by guiding them to a boater's location.  The EPIRB is mounted to a boat, registered to the vessel and will broadcast a distress signal.  The PLB is worn by the boater, and is typically attached to a boater's life jacket........

Barge Shipping By The Numbers........

Barge shipping encompasses an extensive network that is perfect for moving seabourne cargo to inland destinations, as well as moving exports to sea ports.

The barge shipping industry is quite significant to the agricultural sector.  Across North America, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates and maintains better than 12,000 miles of rivers, inland waterways and canals.

In 2016, the North America barge transportation market accounted for $22.2 billion and is expected to increase to $31.1 billion by 2024.  Increases in petrochemocal shipments has contributed to the region's industry growth........

The State Of Louisiana Looking For Ways To Deal With Carp........

For years, the invasive Asian carp has been the bane of the Upper Mississippi River Basin, and now in the Lower Mississippi River basin, they have begun to shift from nuisance to threat.

As the Asian carp move into the region, researchers, politicians and chefs are trying to figure out how to handle the invasion.  Options include placing a bounty on the fish, electrocuting them, developing a carp disease, or even deep frying them.

The carp are threatening to out-compete native fish species for food, and they can survive in several types of water.  During a 2013 and 2014 survey of the Mississippi, Atchafalaya, Ouchita and Red rivers, researchers found that 14 percent of all young fry were Asian carp........

The River Clean Up Has Been Rescheduled........

Missouri River Relief, the not-for-profit, volunteer based organization had originally scheduled a clean up by boat of portions of the Osage and Missouri Rivers on Saturday, rain or shine, however, frigid temps and snow forecasted for Saturday have caused the event to be rescheduled.

The clean up has been rescheduled for June 2, and it will still be at the Bonnots Mill River Access, near Jefferson City.  Volunteers will be picked up by boat and ferried to strategic, pre-scouted sites along the banks of the Missouri and Osage Rivers.

In it's 17 year history, Missouri River Relief has conducted 168 community based clean ups.  Over 25,000 volunteers have cleaned up some 900 tons of trash and debris from the banks of more than 1,000 miles of river........

Help bash trash during MDC and MoDOT annual

Trash Bash April 15 – May 15

Get more information on the April 15 – May 15 Trash Bash online at nomoretrash.org.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) encourage people throughout Missouri to help “bash trash” during their 16th annual No MOre Trash! Bash April 15 through May 15.

The event focuses on “spring cleaning” the outdoors by asking people to pick up litter across Missouri from roadsides, parks, neighborhoods, rivers, streams, trails, and other places. Trash Bash activities also include various educational efforts in schools, community events, and Earth Day celebrations around the state.

"Littering harms the environment and pollutes our waterways," said MoDOT No MOre Trash! Coordinator Stacy Armstrong. "Please consider the impact you can make on the environment by recycling, reusing, and disposing of waste properly."

Each year, MoDOT spends about $6.75 million to remove litter from more than 385,000 acres of roadsides along 34,000 state highway miles. Annual volunteer efforts to pick up litter along Missouri highways are valued at more than $1 million.

Littering also hurts wildlife and Missouri outdoors.

"Many animals mistake litter for food and become sick and die when they try to ingest it,” said MDC No MOre Trash! Coordinator Joe Jerek. "Birds, fish, turtles, and other animals also get tangled in litter, such as plastic six-pack holders and fishing line, and it can kill them."

Last year, volunteers collected more than 43,000 bags of litter and several truckloads of debris during the spring No More Trash! Bash. People also attended numerous educational events that stressed the importance of not littering.

Volunteers also participated through Adopt-A-Highway and Stream Team litter cleanup events. Missouri Stream Team Program volunteers removed 547 tons of litter from waterways and dedicated more than $2.3 million worth of volunteer time to litter removal statewide annually.

Volunteers are needed across the state this year to participate in litter cleanup activities. Participants can report their cleanup efforts and will receive a No MOre Trash! thank-you

For more information, visit nomoretrash.org, or call 1-888-ASK-MODOT (1-888-275-6636).

U.S. Coast Guard

News Release.......

Coast Guard announces first civil penalty for 2017 illegal charter operations on Lake Michigan

CHICAGO – A U.S. Coast Guard Hearing Officer imposed a $14,000 civil penalty to Jim Finnegan of Prospect Heights, Illinois on March 19, 2018 for operating a commercial passenger vessel in violation of federal regulations.

As part of a concerted effort by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, officials were able to determine that on July 29, 2017, Finnegan operated the 31-foot cabin cruiser Irish Wake as a passenger vessel. Nine of the 11 passengers onboard paid Finnegan via a web-based application to get underway for a four-hour-voyage.

Operators who take on paying passengers are considered to be operating a charter vessel. Operating a charter vessel without the required documents and license may be a violation of federal law, and the operator could be subject to criminal or civil liability.

The owner was found violating the following federal regulations:
•Operating in commercial service without a licensed operator onboard - $5,000,
•Failure to enroll in a drug testing program - $5,000,
•Operating with more than six paying passengers without a valid Certificate of Inspection - $2,000, and
•Operating with more than six paying passengers without a “Stability” letter issued by the Coast Guard - $2,000.

If the boat is carrying more than six paying passengers, it is required to be inspected by the Coast Guard. The Certificate of Inspection should be displayed in an area accessible to passengers.

“Regulations are in place to help ensure the safety of passengers,” said Cmdr. Zeita Merchant, commanding officer of Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago. “Illegal Passenger Vessel operations pose a significant hazard to life, property and the marine environment.”

Anyone who wishes to verify the inspected status of a vessel, or who wishes to report a vessel suspected of operating illegally, may contact Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago at 630-986-2155.

News Release From BoatUS

"Boats are good. A lot of boats are better."

WASHINGTON, April 6, 2018 – U.S. Department of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke addressed the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council at its recent meeting held April 4 and 5 at the Department of Interior in Washington, D.C.

The secretary emphasized the importance of outdoor recreation, specifically as it relates to boating, and included a message directed squarely at America’s nearly 12 million registered boat owners: “Boats are good. A lot of boats are better,” said Zinke, as he discussed his priorities to update and modernize visitor facilities on federal lands and “Bring them into the 21st century” to improve the visitor experience. The secretary also discussed his support for increasing recreational boating access on federal lands, and addressing maintenance backlogs that have plagued the agency for decades.

Council members attending the meeting included Chris Edmonston, BoatUS; Linda Friar, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service; Gene Gilliland, B.A.S.S.; David Hoskins, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service; Ron Regan, Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies; Fred Harris, American Fisheries Society; Alvin Taylor, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources; Barb Gigar, Aquatic Resources Education Association; Scott Kovarovic, Izaak Walton League of America; Janine Belleque, Oregon State Marine Board; John Sprague, Marine Industries Association of Florida; John Arway, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission; Betty Huskins, Southeast Tourism Policy Council; Eugene “Mac” McKeever, L.L. Bean; Douglass Boyd, Coastal Conservation Association; Mike Nussman, American Sportfishing Association; Greg Sheehan, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

BoatUS has sat on the council for several secretaries and administrations, and it is encouraging to see how well Secretary Zinke understands the importance of outdoor recreation, and that expanding recreational opportunities improves the conservation of our resources,” said Edmonston, BoatUS Vice President of Government Affairs. “The Secretary also noted that he looked to the council for help, saying ‘I need really good advice.’” Topics for the meeting included discussions regarding the backlog of maintenance at fish hatcheries and parks, permitting issues and improving access to interior lands and waters.

The Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council is funded through the Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act. Its purpose is to advise the Secretary of the Interior, through the Director of the Fish and Wildlife Service, on aquatic conservation endeavors that benefit recreational fishery resources and recreational boating, and to encourage partnerships among industry, the public, and government.

The Corps of Engineers Natural Resources Education Foundation, doing business as The Corps Foundation, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are looking for boaters to participate in a focus group session with men that don't always wear life jackets while boating and swimming.

The focus group is looking to get feedback on the "Life Jackets Worn...Nobody Mourns" campaign products, which includes a new mobile game app.  The session will be held at the M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Visitor Center at Clarence Cannon Dam and Mark Twain Lake.  The two hour will begin at 12:30 pm on April 21, 2018, and will wrap up around 2:30 pm.  There will be refreshments provided, and participants will be paid $75.00.

Participants do not need to own a boat, however, they must be an adult male that has been boating.  Focus group organizers would like participants to download and play the free mobile app game, Lake Guard before attending the focus group.  Participants will also need to bring a tablet or smart phone that can download and test another new free mobile game app.  Space is limited, so registration is required........

Fishing News

Female Anglers Celebrating Women's History Month........

In celebration of Women's History Month, Take Me Fishing has compiled hundreds of stories from women angers as part of their efforts to promote fishing among the most rapidly growing group of anglers.

Pamela Corwin wrote that fishing isn't about reeling in a trophy fish, but rather losing oneself in the larger connection with the bigger world.  Corwin adds that fishing offers the chance to immerse oneself in a kind of meditation that true anglers seek.

Kate Anderson writes that her favorite feeling is fighting with a fish, and the anticipation of not knowing what is on the other end of the line until it reaches the boat.  She says that because of her love of the water and fishing, she now works in the recreational marine industry and gets to fish, shrimp and crab for work........

The Piasa Bird

Skeleton Likeness At Mineral Springs Mall........

The Mineral Springs Mall has an exact likness of the mythical Piasa Bird's skeleton.  The skeletal structure was created by Tom Rother of Woods N Welds in the town of Batchtown in Calhoun County.

Rother's Piasa Bird skeleton was created using recycled chains, reinforcement bars and a freon tank that has been sectioned and welded back together.

The sculpture is located in front of It's Raining Zen in the Mineral Springs Mall.  It is the fourth Piasa Bird created by Rother, and he is planning on making more in the future........

The Picture of the Day... was taken last Sunday on the lower side of Alton Lock and Dam.

Something you don't see on the river every day.  A work boat with a bow ramp that looks a lot like a WWII landing craft.

It was moored on the lower side of the Alton Dam next to some barges loaded  with lock gates

April 06, 2018 Update:

Bill,
Saw your picture of the day today. As a Lock Operator at Mel Price I thought I might offer some clarification. The pictured boat is a LCM-8 commonly called a mike boat. It is a landing craft used by the Navy and army in Viet Nam and later operations. The corps acquired it from the navy and we do use it for operations around the locks.

Hi Bill,

Charles Hopkins, aka "Hoppie," helps tie up a barge which was coming in to change shifts. Hoppie's Marina on the Mississippi River in Kimmswick, Mo.,has been a popular stop for boaters for several decades. Hoppie and his wife Fern are great hosts for many travelers. People from around the world have traveled the Mississippi River by boat and often visit historic Kimmswick for lunch, dinner, shopping and touring. The marina is a short walk from the shopping district.

See you on the river!

Corps Offering Updates On Missouri River's Spring Rise........

This month, officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be holding five public forums along the Missouri River Basin, where they will update attendees on the current hydrological conditions and the plans for operating the mainstem reservoir system over the next several months.

John Remus, chief of the Corps' Missouri River Basin Water Management Division in Omaha says that the latest forecast has increased slightly over the past month due to additional accumulation of plains and mountain snowpack in the Upper Missouri River Basin.

Remus adds that based upon the current mountain and plains snowpack and precipitation forecasts, runoff into the Fort Peck and Garrison reservoirs is predicted to be above average between March and August........

Osage & Missouri Rivers

Clean-up This Weekend postponed.........

POSTPONED - Osage & Missouri River Clean-up this weekend postponed.

Reschedule date is June 2

We regret to announce that the clean-up originally scheduled for April 7 in Bonnots Mill, MO, has been postponed to June 2.

With predicted snow of 2-4 inches and a projected low Friday night of 16 degrees, we decided this event will be much safer and much more effective at a later date. It's very difficult to find trash under even one inch of snow!

Yes, we know your weather app says it will be sunny and 55, but this decision was based on watching forecast trends using 7 different weather forecast sites. Missouri spring weather is impossible to accurately predict, and we get that. This will be the first time in 18 years we have postponed a clean-up event due to a weather event that was not flooding!

If you already registered for the event, but find out you can't make the new date, please let event organizer Jennifer Davis know (click her name to send an email).

If you registered but still plan on attending the reschedule, there is no need to do anything!

See you on the river!

Boat Maintenance

Tips For Spring Cleaning........

As spring has sprung, boaters are preparing to head out on the water.  Many people have the marina take care of the de-winterizing and mechanical preparation, however, many owners and family members handle the rest, which includes washing, waxing and polishing.

When it comes to cleaning a boat, it is important to remember the basics, such as beginning the job with rinsing the dirt and grime off the boat prior to breaking out the brushes and sponges.  If the abrasive dirt of grit is not removed, it can be ground in and scratch the vessel's surface.

Having the correct equipment is very important.  Quality sponges, brushes, hoses, sprayers and clothes can help keep the boat's finish from being scratches.  Using a spot-free rinse is a good idea, and always use cleaning products that are environmentally friendly so that the water is not polluted while cleaning the boat........

Mississippi River Flooding

The Mississippi Flooding More Than In The Past 500 Years........

A recent study has stirred up some controversy with the claim that human activity, in the form of levees and training structures, has caused the Lower Mississippi River to be more likely to flood.

The study used river sediment records and tree rings from once-submerged oak trees to deduce past flooding and flow patterns and fount that the last 150 years stand out from the last 500 years in terms of volume and frequency of flooding events.

Samuel Munoz, lead author of the study and a geoscientist with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Northeastern University says that this is the first time researchers can see what flooding along the Mississippi River was like over the past 500 years........

Mississippi River Near Dorena, Missouri

A Unique Ferry Boat Trip To Take In Missouri........

Typically, the simplest way to cross the Mississippi River is to use one of the many bridges that span the river.  There are times, however, that there isn't a bridge nearby.  Thankfully, there are still ferries operating on the Mississippi River, and it's still a great way to get across the river.

There is only one ferry boat that can take you from Missouri to Kentucky, the Dorena-Hickman Ferry.  The ferry runs seven days a week, and is quite an experience.  Passengers drive their vehicles onto the ferry, park and enjoy the ride.

Ferry passengers will be able to enjoy the view of the Mississippi River from the ferry platform.  The trip itself takes less than 30 minutes and is one of the more unique experiences in Missouri........

This year, the recreational boating industry will be facing significant policy decisions which will reach a critical point this summer and will have long-term affects on boating in the United States.  Among these issues are halting the year-round sale of E15, the passage of the Modern Fish Act and protecting the industry from tariffs.

According to Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, attending this year's American Boating Congress will guarantee that marine businesses, employees and customers are protected.

Dammrich adds that it is imperative to engage with the nation's legislators to help guide legislative efforts over the next several months.  He says that there are many important issues will be dealt with this summer, so it is important to attend this year's American Boating Congress to help address crucial policy decisions that will recreational boating........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Mussels Must Be Moved Prior To Riverfront Renovations........

According to Mark Bross with Klingner and Associates, the engineering firm that is helping Hannibal with their riverfront renovation project, mussels will have to be relocated before any construction can begin.

Bross shared the mussel-moving information with the Hannibal City Council on Tuesday.  He says that some mussel are protected, and they must be relocated so they are not destroyed during construction.

The Missouri Department of Conservation reports that Missouri has close to 70 species of freshwater mussels.  Almost half of Missouri's mussel species are protected........

Boating Legislation

The NMMA Has Assembled FY19 Congressional Appropriations Agenda........

The National Marine Manufacturers Association federal affairs team has assembled a list of appropriations priorities for the Fiscal year 2019 cycle.

The NMMA can use appropriations to accomplish priorities on behalf of their members and the recreational boating industry.  Appropriations may also be a way to tip the scales on important programs and policies important to the industry.

The NMMA's requests include the guarantee that the nation's waterways are being improved and maintained, preventing boaters from misfueling at the pump, managing fisheries resources and promoting American-built boats in the global economy.........

Missouri State Highway Patrol

News Release

Spring Is Here........

Reprinted info in News Release relative to boating only:

The Missouri State Highway Patrol also reminds boaters that spring weather can bring challenges for boating on Missouri's many lakes and rivers. The Patrol offers these reminders for safe boating:
· Remember: The water temperature hasn't warmed yet for the season. Thus, hypothermia is cause for concern. Life jacket use becomes even more important in cold water because hypothermia can quickly rob the body of the ability to perform the most basic tasks and drowning is always a concern. If you wind up taking an unexpected plunge into cold water, it is vital to get out of the water and into dry clothes as soon as possible. If dry clothes are not an option leave the wet ones on. Even wet clothes will offer some insulation and trap body heat. A warm drink can be given to someone suffering from hypothermia as long as they are conscious. Caffeine and alcohol should be avoided. Drinks with sugars for quick energy are preferable. Hypothermia can be deadly even if you are wearing a life jacket, so it is important to never go boating alone during cold water conditions. If no one knows you are in trouble, no one can help.
· Flooding affects safety on Missouri's waterways. Boaters are asked to take extra precautions when boating in flooded areas. Many times, the best decision is to stay off the water. If boaters find it necessary to operate in flooded areas, operate at idle speed to avoid a wake that can damage flooded structures, docks, and the shoreline. Fast moving water can easily capsize or flip a boat or personal watercraft, especially when combined with fixed objects such as trees and buildings. Boaters should avoid operating in swift flowing waters. High water conditions increase the likelihood of partially submerged navigational hazards in the water, so keep a proper lookout to identify such hazards.
· Spring is an important time to go through the safety equipment required on your boat. Mechanical issues tend to occur more in the spring after boats and motors have been sitting dormant for much of the winter. Inspect your motorboat for fuel leaks and water leaks prior to that first trip out on the water. Ensure you have the appropriate life jackets and other necessary boating equipment. Going out on the water unprepared is taking an unnecessary risk.

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!! Follow the Patrol on Twitter for the most current news @MSHPTrooperGHQ

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Parks And Rec Presented Renovation To The City Council........

Tuesday night, Andy Dorian and engineers with Hannibal Parks and Recreation presented their plans for renovating the town's riverfront.

There has been a considerable revision to the design, and that is the removal of a sheet metal wall.  The wall will now be constructed from rip-rap.  At nearly $5 million, the steel wall would have cost as much as the entire project.

Dorian says that the existing structures are deteriorating, and since they were installed at different times, there is no cohesiveness along the riverfront.  The renovated riverfront will feature a new promenade that will run from side to side, as well as a new updated marina........

Missouri River Runoff

Corps Eying River Rise As Runoff Season Begins........

Over the next month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be hosting public meetings in cities along the Missouri River to provide updates on the 2018 flood outlook.  Ever since the historic flooding in 2011, it has become standard to closely monitor the outlook for the river rising.

Last month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported that the 2018 runoff forecast for the Upper Missouri River Basin, from Sioux City to the Rocky Mountain region was forecast to be 29 million acre-feet, or 115 percent above normal.  The majority of the runoff is expected through April and into May, based upon the usual patterns of rainfall and snowmelt.

Back in 2011, the snowpack in the Upper Missouri River Basin was above normal, but what really drove the flooding was a huge rainfall event on May 20.  Jody Farhat, the Corps chief for the Missouri River Basin says that an extraordinary amount of rain fell in eastern Montana, and pushed the Yellowstone River to record levels.  That runoff filled up the reservoir storage that was intended for the snowmelt........

Boat Gas News

NMMA:  Call To Action On E15........

The National Marine Manufacturers Association recently issued a Boating United alert intended to rally the boating industry to take action against the potential sale of E15 all year long.

Currently, President Trump is considering changes to the Renewable Fuels Standard, which mandates biofuels such as ethanol in the nation's fuel supplies.

The ethanol industry is pushing hard to allow for E15, or gasoline blended with 15 percent ethanol year-round.  Nicole Vasilaros, the vice president of legal and federal affairs for the NMMA says that they have heard rumors that there may be action on the sale of E15 year round, and more needs to be done to address current issues and consumer education........

Carlyle Lake

Pool Elevation........

At 11 am Tuesday morning, Carlyle Lake's pool elevation was at 450.76 feet, and it's current release rate is around 5,560 cubic feet per second.  Flow into the lake was around 10,910 day second feet on Monday.

With the current level of precipitation on the ground, the lake is predicted to crest at 452.0 feet on Saturday morning.  Currently, Carlyle Lake is operating as it was designed.  It is reducing flood stages along the Lower Kaskaskia and Mississippi Rivers.

On account of the rising water, boaters should be aware that some breakwaters will be overtopped, and caution should be used around them.  There is also floating logs and debris to be aware of, and many boat ramps are affected by high water levels........

River History....

April 4, 1998 in River History

About 7:50 pm on April 4, 1998, a tow of the M/V Anne Holly, comprising 12 loaded and 2 empty barges, which was traveling northbound on the Mississippi River through the St. Louis Harbor, struck the Missouri-side pier of the center span of the Eads Bridge. Eight barges broke away from the tow and drifted back through the Missouri span. Three of these barges drifted toward the Admiral. The drifting barges struck the Admiral, causing 8 of its 10 mooring lines to break. The Admiral then rotated clockwise downriver, away from the Missouri riverbank. The captain of the Anne Holly disengaged his vessel from the six remaining barges in the tow and placed the Anne Holly’s bow against the Admiral’s bow to hold it against the bank. About the time the Anne Holly began pushing against the Admiral, the Admiral’s next-to-last mooring line parted. The Anne Holly and the single mooring wire that remained attached to the Admiral’s stern anchor held the Admiral near the Missouri bank. No deaths resulted from the accident; 50 people were examined for minor injuries. Of those examined, 16 were sent to local hospitals for further treatment. Damages were estimated at $11 million.

The Delta Queen

A Look At The Delta Queen Over The Years........

While Trolling The Internet....  We reeled in a photo gallery of the Delta Queen plying the rivers of the heartland.  For several decades, the Delta Queen cruised the waters of the Mississippi River and it's tributaries, with music from her calliope signaling that she was arriving along the riverfront....

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer

Mercury Marine Releases Vessel Config Technology........

Mercury Marine recently introduced a new software configurator for dealers and boat manufacturers.  Vessel Config is intended to guide customers through the configuration process in order to guarantee they are ordering the correct Mercury control and rigging components for their vessels.

John Buelow, Mercury Marine vice president of global category management says that the Vessel Config will fundamentally change the way customers interact with Mercury.  He adds Vessel Config will transform boat dealers and manufacturers into virtual engineers with the capability of configuring complex systems without help.

Using Vessel Config, boat builders have the ability to prepare the correct vessel or engine for their customer easily.  The technology guides customers as they configure their boats, ensuring that they are ordering the correct Mercury products for their vessels........

Bamboozled

April 3, 2018 ~ jalsails

Extreme Breathability @ The Helm

My husband retired three weeks, two days, and one hour ago. He prides himself on keeping a busy schedule, like walking a couple of miles on the Katy Trail along the Missouri River before his wife wakes up in the morning. He claims to be a “simple man” who keeps a daily “Do List” and maintains a sense of order. He is also a voracious reader and picks up on tiny nuances of change. Yet, I was still surprised when he actually went clothes shopping in preparation for our upcoming trip to Florida and bought one item.

A Bamboo Boxer Brief… Bamboo F

… as in Waltzing Matilda underwear.

He’d found a small advertisement in today’s paper hailing a new product for manly men that promises, “Performance is Natural”. The underwear’s MOSO features include moisture wicking and extreme reliability. George’s fresh passion for Organic Performance Wear is puzzling. Noting the slogan, “It’s a Pleasure for Your Business” I wondered, what sort of business opportunities does this bundle of soft bamboo promise consumers?

Is George’s attention to fine undergarments a natural part of the early days of retirement? Is this an organic phase of leaving the business world to focus one’s time on personal business? Do men really seek personal clothing that “feels better than silk and performs better than (wait for it) petroleum-based polyester synthetics”? This is all new to me. The fine print on the package also promises “your man parts will stay cool, dry, and stink- free, even during peak intensity!”

I guess Victoria’s Secret is out. Good-bye silk worms. Hello bamboo stalks. I must admit saying bamboo aloud has a subtle, sultry, sound (bam b-oooohhhh). All that I picked up in today’s news is that Tide Podding is out and the condom-snorting challenge is in. I suppose my Helly Hansen performance sailing gear is on it’s way out too – though it is a product of Norway and we know how everyone there wants to get in here.

I want to issue a warning to our boating friends. Should you see Big George hoisting the main sail chanting, “Weigh hey, and up she rises!” Turn away. It’s just the koala beneath his belt nibbling on the bamboo.

Meanwhile, I’m going to stock up on organic bamboo toilet paper for the head. If you come aboard to sail on Ex Libris, feel free to use the head to do your business. But for Pete’s sake, please don’t start singing, “Tie me kangaroo down sport!” (clean living is all about punctuation).

Lordy, thankfully only boaters know where he is standing.

The sailor’s version of the VS Catwalk.

River Pilots Disputing Fees, Pay Raise........

A group of Mississippi River pilots are fighting for a 40 percent mileage reimbursement increase while they are embroiled in a three year fight for raises that would increase annual pilot pay over $473,000.

The latest version of the continuing feud is over transportation tariffs, which is the amount of money pilots are reimbursed to cover travel expenses to and from their homes and berths.

The Louisiana Chemical Association is fighting against the pay and transportation tariff increases, and late last year, they filed a motion to block the pilot's mileage fee increase.  Their motion had been denied, and the association requested that the 19th Judicial District Court to intervene in February........

Riverfront Plans Heading Before Council........

On Tuesday, the process of getting final approval on the proposed riverfront plans will begin when the plans go before the Hannibal City Council for a first reading.

The Hannibal Park Board and the Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau will be helping to fund the riverfront renovations, they will have to sign off on the proposal as well.

According to Andy Dorian, director of the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department, the local support for the renovation project remains high, even among current boat slip renters........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

STL Should Be Proud Of The Merchants Bridge........

A few weeks ago, a Miami footbridge under construction collapsed onto the highway below.  The engineers on that project had the benefit of modern construction techniques, computers, and the ability to stop the traffic below.

The Merchants Bridge over the Mississippi River was completed in 1890 and is still in use today.  This span was designed with pencils, paper, slide rules and constructed with the ever flowing Mississippi River underneath.

In spite of the original design and construction obstacles, the 128 year old, three span rail bridge is still in use today, and should be a source of pride for the St. Louis region........

A Little River History

Mississippi River At St. Paul, Minnesota

University of Minnesota Operated A River Showboat For 50 Years........

Back in 1958, Frank M. "Doc" Whitting brought about a unique style of theater production in the Twin Cities with the opening of the Minnesota Centennial Showboat.  For better than 50 years, the showboat provided student productions while floating in the Mississippi River.

During the showboat's early years, it traveled up and down the Mississippi River, stopping in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Stillwater, Hastings, Red Wing, Wabasha and Winona for scheduled performances.  In addition to performing, actors would also clean the vessel, take tickets, greet visitors among other jobs.

The last season that the boat toured was in 1969.  After that season, the boat was used in the production of the Swedish film The Emigrants prior to ending up moored along the Mississippi River's east bank, below the University of Minnesota's campus........
