Flooding Outlook

Central and Southern United States

Storms Hit Central, Southern U.S.....  Flood Fears Rise....

Over the past week, heavy rainfall and severe flooding has devastated portions of the central and southern United States, which has left at least three people dead, and the flood risk will continue into this week.

The National Weather Service reports that flash flood warnings have been issued for Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas through Thursday.  The governors of Missouri, Indiana and Ohio have declared states of emergency due to the potential of additional flooding.

The forecast for the Ohio River Valley is that heavy rainfall is possible for Wednesday into Thursday.  More rainfall is expected for the Mid-Mississippi and Tennessee River Valleys into Wednesday, which increase the ongoing threat of flooding........

Calling All Boaters

Save the Delta Queen

Photo by Franz Neumeier.. click pic to enlarge

Calling All Boaters

we need your support and action to mobilize and save the Delta Queen.

We have already lost the Show-Boat and the Admiral. We cannot let the Delta Queen rot into a watery grave. The only way she can truly be preserved is to be steaming again with a full crew taking care of her. Currently there is a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives [H.R. 619] that is hung in sub-committee. [Coast Guard and Marine Transportation]. None of the congressmen on this committee are from states that touch any of the rivers [save one from Min]. The issue is the Delta Queen requires an exemption from the 1966 Safety At Sea Act, preventing any vessel carrying more than 50 overnight passengers from being constructed of wood. While the Delta Queen’s hull is steel, her upper decks are primarily wood. Through extensive crew training and many safety upgrades such as an elaborate sprinkler system and fire detection system the Delta Queen has been granted an exemption from this law nine times previously and has safely operated for more than 60 years on the Mississippi River. This new bill addresses a time line for even more upgrades to further meet these fire safety concerns.
So, what can you do? First you need to join the "Save the Delta Queen" group on Facebook. Second you need to send an email or call all of the congressional staffers listed below. You can also go to the "find my Congressman " site [google it]. Once you are there look up your Congressman and send he or she an email telling them they need to contact their parties’ member on the Coast Guard and Marine Transportation committee and ask for a vote to approve the bill and send it to the speaker of the house [ Paul Ryan] for a vote. Congressman Ryan has said “government should not pick winners and losers” Not passing this bill does just that, it will limit competition by not allowing the Delta Queen to compete for cruises with the other boats on the river.
A special thanks to Senator McCaskill who was able to work jointly with Senator Blunt to get identical Senate Bill S. 89 passed by an astounding bi-partisan 85-12 vote earlier this year.
Post your action completed once you have sent you emails to congress.
Please forward this to anyone you think loves the river and wants to see the Delta Queen on the water once again.

Creve Coeur Lake

47,000 Asian Carp Removed From The Lake........

According to preliminary data from state agencies, after the completion of a complex, multiple-agency operation, which wrapped up last week, there are 47,000 fewer Asian carp in Creve Coeur Lake.

Kevin Meneau, a fisheries management biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation says that even as the official estimate of carp removed from the lake is still being figured, the amount of fish caught tipped the scales at 119 tons.

The aim of this netting project was to catch approximately 50,000 carp using a system using sound, electricity and nets.  Meneau said that the amount of carp removed from the lake could represent around 85 percent of the carp in the lake........

The Pictures of the Day....... were sent to us by Capt'n Darryll Weil who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the boat.... After You

Bill:

First time for everything, so here's my review of our Buddy Dutch's funeral along with some pics. This was probably the best "Celebration of Life" I've ever seen. Most of us were telling great stories, most were in an almost cheerful mood. The most awesome casket I've ever seen, even the minister commented on it. The closing song at the service in the chapel was "Born to be Wild"! Dutch would have loved it. We had a motorcycle escort and several of his riding friends helped lead the procession to the cemetery. Appropriately, it was the first time I've been in a funeral procession that was exceeding the speed limit! He was buried with full military honors next to his father. Gonna miss him but he went out in true Dutch style.

Darryll

RiverBill says... The first time we ever posted pictures of a boater's funeral, but I know it is what Dutch would have wanted.

Gonna Miss You Dutch.  What an exit my friend !

Meramec River Near Eureka, Missouri

Home And Business Owners Watching For Meramec River Crest........

Less than a year ago, the Meramec rose out of it's banks, sending floodwaters into Eureka, Fenton, Valley Park and other portions of the St. Louis Metro area.  At that time, the Meramec crested at 46 feet around Eureka.

Currently, residents living near the Meramec River are keeping a wary eye on it, as it is expected to crest by Tuesday.  The good news is that the river is forecast to crest at 25 feet.  Residents are concerned because the data forecasts are based upon can change very quickly.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working on a study of the Lower Meramec River Basin, and will likely release flood mitigation recommendations sometime next year........

News Release From BoatUS

WASHINGTON, February 26, 2018 – Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) urges recreational boaters and anglers residing in states with U.S. Senate Commerce Committee members to speak up now in favor of passing the Modern Fish Act. The bill, which will be voted on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018, aims at improving federal marine fisheries management for recreational anglers. If the bill passes the committee, it will go to the full Senate floor for a vote.
“The bill corrects a long-running mistake of regulating recreational fishing in the same way as we do commercial fishing,” said BoatUS Manager of Government Affairs David Kennedy. “They are simply not the same, and the Modern Fish Act recognizes that. It’s smart legislation.”
Since 1976, saltwater recreational fishing in federal waters has been regulated by the Magnuson-Stevens Act (MSA) which is credited with achieving success in managing commercial fishing. However, MSA never adequately accounted for recreational fishing.
The goal of the Modern Fish Act - S.1520 - is to finally address the needs of the nation’s 11 million saltwater recreational anglers, improve access to federal waters and promote marine resource conservation. It will ensure exempted fishing permits help fisheries management and conservation, rather than the status quo that can hinder both, and support new data collection methods. The legislation also modifies annual catch limit requirements to allow for more adaptive approaches, and it’s also designed to give federal resource managers access to more data and perform long-overdue examinations of fishery allocations.
States with U.S. Senate Commerce Committee members include Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
Boaters and anglers can take action today to contact their Senator by going to goo.gl/2HXryk
For more information on the benefits of the act, go to https://keepamericafishing.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/HR-200-Onesheet.pdf.

Dutch Hauhe Passed Away

A river icon, Errol "Dutch" Hauhe, 75, passed away on Monday February 19th, 2018 with family by his side after a long battle with cancer. Dutch hailed out of Polestar in the aptly named yacht "Scoundrel" but he could be found anywhere, anytime. From doing the Great Loop to boating in the middle of winter. Dutch lead the Blessing of the Fleet Boat Parade for many years, always with impeccable timing arriving at the Shrine. Multi-faceted, as he was also involved in the automobile business, motorcycles, including a world land speed record motorcycle and the annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America. Most of all he was a great friend, generous to a fault and will be sorely missed by all that had the pleasure of meeting him. In lieu of flowers donations to the Blessing of the Fleet or a local charity of your choice in his name. Our prayers and condolences go out to the Hauhe family. Arrangements are as follows:

Visitation: Sunday February 25th from 4 PM to 8 PM at Schrader Funeral Home, 14960 Manchester Rd., Ballwin, MO 63011
Service: Monday the 26th at 10AM from Schrader Funeral Home

40 Ton Sculpture Headed For Lighthouse Park........

The Grafton City Council recently decided to have the same team that created St. Louis' Turtle Park create a new giant sculpture for Grafton's Lighthouse Park.

The sculpture is intended to help turn the park into a hot spot for the tourist-dependant town.  It will feature a loggerhead snapping turtle and two catfish, in recognition of Grafton's increasing reputation as a fishing hot spot.

Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin says that the sculpture will be a climbing sculpture for kids.  He adds that the sculpture will be located east of the lighthouse in an area that boaters will be able to see it, and people along the highway can see it too........

The Illinois River Set To Crest At Peoria On Monday........

At around noon on Monday, the Illinois River is expected to crest in Peoria at 25.1 feet.  The river is forecast to remain at that level for 24 hours before starting to recede.

A combination of rainfall and snowmelt has raised the level of the Illinois River.  Peoria has been under a flood warning since last Tuesday.  As of Sunday evening, the Illinois River was at 24.8 feet.

By Sunday night, some floodwaters had crept beyond the sandbags set along the riverfront by Peoria Public Works crews.  Sie Maroon, Assistant Director of Public Works says that there isn't enough water past the sandbags to warrant pumping it out........

As of Saturday, the Ohio River was forecast to crest Wednesday morning at 49 feet.  The river, however, is rising faster than predicted.  It is already over 48 feet and the City of Paducah has started the process of installing their floodgates.

Various local agencies are preparing for the floodgate installation.  It will take crews about 12 hours to install 20 gates.  Officials expect that the floodgates will remain in place for several days, as the Ohio River is expected to hold over 48 feet through March 7.........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer

Evinrude To Offer Boaters Hands-On Engine Encounters........

In an effort to be more aggressive with their 2018 marketing promotions, Evinrude will be offering boaters the opportunity to try out their engines during a series of events in different markets.

Tracy Crocker, Evinrude senior vice president and general manager says that they want boaters to try out the E-TEC G2 series, and show them that these 2 stroke engines are considerably cleaner and quieter than those offered a few decades ago.

Evinrude has faced an uphill battle due to the stigma, and the best way to change people's mind is to let customers and dealers run them and explain that these 2 strokes have three star CARB emissions ratings.........

Hi Bill,

We are still alive! It’s been a long cold but not so lonely winter this year. Last year's mild winter then the trip to the Bahamas spoiled me. February 15th gave us temps in the 70s and Captain Alan Deutschmann said we are going for a boat ride. So we broke through the ice and headed out on the river and went for a lap around Enterprise. Our residents by the power lines at the upstream part of Iowa Island have been busy. I did not know she was sitting there until I edited the pictures.  Some interesting dead wood. And a yearling.

A beautiful day on the river it was.

My brother had Mom's old 8MM films transferred to VHS, I then burned them to a DVD and now have ripped it to the computer so I could edit them. Here's a couple very short old boating videos. First one is me driving our boat for the very first time at Lake of the Ozarks. Probably at Edgewater Resort by the Dam, guessing about 1955 or so. Second one is from the day my Dad decided to put the boat in our public pool, Blue Springs Mineral Pool, in Fenton.

Enjoy, Darryll

Greitens Declares State Of Emergency Due To Storms, Flooding........

Saturday afternoon, Missouri Governor Eric Greitens signed an executive order which declares a state of emergency on account of storms and increases in flooding.

Meramec River Near Arnold, Missouri

Wet Weather Causing Concerns Over Flooding........

A large portion of the St. Louis region is dealing with wet and rainy weather, and this is causing flooding in some places.

Rescue crews were called out to the Meramec River for a water rescue.  The call ended up being a false alarm.  People were on the Meramec River moving a dock, however, they were not in distress.  Responders deployed boats to make sure there were no people in trouble in the river.

Saturday morning was busy for the Rock Community Fire Protection District, as they were training to execute a boat rescue.  Battalion Chief Terry Studyvin says that practicing these skills is important, especially since they may be called upon as the flood warnings and watches continue........

Corps, Local Officials Host Flood Readiness Workshops........

This week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District began hosting a series of flood preparedness workshops for emergency management agencies and levee districts.  Metro East officials attended the workshops as well.

Every year, the Corps' St. Louis District holds workshops in the regions they are responsible for.  One of the Corps' main directives is to assist when natural disasters and other emergencies happen.

These workshops give local, state and federal emergency management agencies, levee owners and the public the opportunity to discuss their roles and concerns about flood fight responses and recovery efforts........

Rock River At Moline, Illinois

Rock River Cresting At Moline Saturday Morning........

Friday night, meteorologist Dave Cousins with the National Weather Service, Davenport said that the Rock River at Moline should crest at 15.4 feet at 6 am Saturday morning, and will slowly recede over the next week to 10 days.

As of 7:30 pm Friday evening, the Rock River at Moline was at 15.07 feet.  Flood stage at Moline is 12 feet.  The Rock River is not expected to fall below flood stage until sometime between March 4 and March 7.

Recent rainfall, and the flooding along the Pecatonica River in Wisconsin, which is a tributary of the Rock River, has caused the Rock River to flood.  Ice floes along the river has made predicting the floodwaters difficult........

River Shipping News

Grain Barge Shipments Hindered By Flooding........

On Thursday, grain barge shipping nearly came to a standstill across the Midwest, as melting snow and heavy rainfall swelled several rivers.  The high water put a stop to barge loading, and halted towboats that ferry crops to the export terminals along the Gulf Coast.

Barge operators suspended operations along the upper reaches of the Illinois River, as river levels are near record crests, or expected to rise to those levels by the weekend, according to river forecasts from the National Weather Service.

According to grain barge traders, the operators of several Ohio River grain elevators stopped loading barges due to the river levels being too high for barges to get under the grain spouts........

Illinois River Flooding

Flooding Along Illinois River May Affect St. Louis........

Since the Illinois River is spilling out of it's banks in northern Illinois, and the Illinois River flows into the Mississippi River just north of St. Louis, it will be interesting to see what happens when that water arrives in the Riverbend.

There are shelters open that are intended to assist people forced to evacuate their homes due to flooding as rivers swollen by snow melt and heavy rains in the upper Midwest.

As of Thursday, flood warnings are in effect for portions of several states, from Wisconsin to Illinois, and Ohio to Texas and Louisiana.......

Bill,

Here's the picture and post I put up about the Ski Pals of Alton.

I talked to someone at the RiverBills Night at the Boat Show about the Alton Ski Club and can't remember who it was. Hope he sees this. Here is the old picture I found in with my Mom's old pics of the "Ski Pals of Alton". I'm guessing that was the original ski club?

Illinois River Near Marseilles, Illinois

Marseilles Residents Ordered To Evacuate........

Recent heavy rainfall, combined with melting snow has saturated northern and central Illinois, pushing the Illinois River out of it's banks.  Currently flood warnings remain in effect.

On Wednesday, the National Weather Service reported major flooding along the Illinois River at Ottawa and Morris.  Officials issued an evacuation order for those living near the river in Marseilles.  Residents were required to be out by 2 pm Wednesday.  Re-entry will not be allowed.

Moderate flooding has been reported along the Des Plaines, Kankakee, Kishwaukee, Pecatonica and Rock rivers. This round of flooding comes on the heels of a storm that went through the region Tuesday, dumping over 5 inches of rain in some areas........

Flooded Rock River At Moline, Illinois

Expected To Crest At 14.7 Feet........

As 0f 9:30 pm Wednesday evening, the Rock River at Moline, Illinois is predicted to crest at 14.7 feet.  The forecast is slightly lower than the 15 foot crest from earlier in the day.  Flood stage is at 12 feet.

Andy Ervin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service said that even though the expected crest is lower, potential ice jams along the river could cause the river level to rapidly rise.

Ervin notes that the forecasted crest was reduced due to a decrease in water volume flowing out of the Green River into the Rock River.  Ervin asks that anyone observing an ice jam on the river immediately contact the authorities........

Meramec River Near Eureka, Missouri

Officials Keeping Wary Eye On River Levels As Rains Continue........

Even as heavy rains are moving through the St. Louis region, officials in Eureka are keeping tabs on the Meramec River.  Currently, the Meramec River is at 4 feet near Eureka.

The National Weather Service says that the Meramec River at Eureka won't reach flood stage until 19 feet.  The record flood level was 46 feet set in 2015.

Tuesday evening, Eureka Mayor Kevin Coffey, said that they are nowhere near previous flooding levels, however, he will remain in constant contact with the State Emergency Agency and the NWS while the rain is still falling........

Calling All Boaters

Save the Delta Queen........

Calling all boaters…… we need your support and action to mobilize and save the Delta Queen.

MDC Offering Free Loaner Fishing Gear........

The Missouri Department of Conservation is giving people who would like to fish but don't have the equipment the opportunity to wet a line via their free Rod and Reel Loaner Program.

The MDC's Rod and Reel Loaner Program provides free "loaner" fishing gear at over 100 locations across the state, including the MDC offices and nature centers, some state parks and marinas, as well as at many libraries.

MDC Fisheries Program Specialist Andrew Branson says that this program offers kids and adults that don't have fishing gear the chance to give fishing a try before investing in fishing equipment........

Mississippi River Pollution

Minnesota's Suit Against 3M Heading To Trial........

Soon, officials in Minnesota will attempting to convince a jury that 3M Co. should pay the state $5 billion to help clean up environmental damage allegedly caused by chemicals that the company had dumped for decades.

This case is focusing on 3M's disposal of chemicals used in the manufacture of Scotchgard fabric protector and other products.  3M denies that they did anything wrong or illegal.

The State of Minnesota is claiming that these chemicals damaged the state's natural resources, including over 100 miles of the Mississippi River, as well as contaminating drinking water, harming wildlife, and posing a threat to human life........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

February 20, 1980:  The Admiral Cancelled 1980 Season........

On June 12, 1940, the Admiral took it's first cruise along the Mississippi River.  She was a fixture along the riverfront at St. Louis from the 1940s on into the 21st Century.

On February 20, 1980, it was announced that the Admiral was calling off the 1980 season, as extensive repairs to the vessel's steel hull were needed.

At that time, the Admiral was moored along the Mississippi River just outside of a New Orleans shipyard.  It was not certain whether the Admiral would ever cruise the river again, much less make it back to the St. Louis riverfront........
