Sad News

Dutch Hauhe Passed Away

Sad News to Report:

A river icon, Errol "Dutch" Hauhe, 75, passed away on Monday February 19th, 2018 with family by his side after a long battle with cancer. Dutch hailed out of Polestar in the aptly named yacht "Scoundrel" but he could be found anywhere, anytime. From doing the Great Loop to boating in the middle of winter. Dutch lead the Blessing of the Fleet Boat Parade for many years, always with impeccable timing arriving at the Shrine. Multi-faceted, as he was also involved in the automobile business, motorcycles, including a world land speed record motorcycle and the annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America. Most of all he was a great friend, generous to a fault and will be sorely missed by all that had the pleasure of meeting him. In lieu of flowers donations to the Blessing of the Fleet or a local charity of your choice in his name. Our prayers and condolences go out to the Hauhe family. Arrangements are as follows:

Visitation: Sunday February 25th from 4 PM to 8 PM at Schrader Funeral Home, 14960 Manchester Rd., Ballwin, MO 63011

Service: Monday the 26th at 10AM from Schrader Funeral Home

Schrader website: http://www.schrader.com/

Alton's Small Businesses Form Human Chain To Promote Town........

Alton is one of five finalists in the Small Business Revolution, which is a web show that can also be watched on Hulu.  This competition is for a spot on the show, and the prize is a downtown makeover.

Over the past week, the city has been hosting special events and pushing the #myalton.  On Monday, Shannon Walker, wife of Alton Mayor Brett Stawar got Alton's small business owners to form a human chain to promote the town.

Terri and Glenn Beaubin, owners of State Street Market say that no matter the outcome, the recognition has been beneficial.  Beaubin said that the event has already brought a lot to the community.

Tuesday, February 20 is the final day for voting........

National Weather Service

Predicts Illinois River to Rise To Flood Stage This Week......

The National Weather Service is predicting that portions of the Illinois River will be at "Flood Stage" later this week.

Flooding Outlook

Persistent Rain Raises Threat Of Flooding Across Central U.S.........

Unrelenting rounds of rain spanning from the lower Red and Mississippi River valleys to the central Appalachians will increase the risk of flooding through the end of the month.

AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams says that there are some areas that have received, or will be receiving more than a month's worth of rain during a single storm.

Abrams adds that since the ground is currently saturated in some areas and will not have time to dry out between storms, every storm will revive the chances of urban, stream and river flooding........

Save the Delta Queen........

02-18-18

Delta Queen River Rats

We need to mobilize and take action to save the Delta Queen. We have already lost the ShowBoat and the Admiral. We cannot let the Delta Queen rot into a watery grave. There is a bill in the house [hr619] that is hung in committee. [Coast Guard and Marine Transportation] None of the congressmen on this committee are from states that touch any of the rivers. [ save one from Min] The issue is the DQ is a wooden boat and the owners of other paddle wheelers [steel] are lobbying to block the DQ from being used once again on the rivers. The bill address a time line for upgrades for fire safety etc. So what can you do? First you need to join the "save the Delta Queen" group on FaceBook. Second you need to go to the "find my congressman " site [google it]. Once you are there look up your congressman and send he or she an email telling them they need to call their parties member on this Coast Guard and Marine Transportation committee and ask for a vote to approve the bill and send it to the speaker of the house [ Paul Ryan] for a vote. Thanks to Senators Blunt and McCaskill who jointly wrote the senate version and got it passed. If you need assistance you can message me and I will be happy to help. Please forward this to anyone you think loves the river and wants to see the Delta Queen on the water once again.

Thanks RBB.

Carp Removal Project Wrapped Up........

Over the past three weeks, conservation agencies have teamed up remove hundreds of the invasive Asian carp from the waters of Creve Coeur Lake.

Officials from local, state and federal entities set the goal of removing 90 percent of the Asian carp population from the lake and they believe that they have achieved their objective.

Kevin Meneau, a biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation says that a considerable amount of planning went into the project.  There was a lot of equipment and personnel borrowed from all across the Midwest........

Boating, Fishing Industries Must Engage Women........

Grady White Debuts Canyon 456........

On Wednesday at the Progressive Miami international Boat Show, Grady White introduced their largest boat yet to the press and public, the Canyon 456.

Grady White reports that the Canyon 456 spent two years in development, and features the widest beam in class at 14 feet.  The vessel measures 45 feet in length and is propelled with quad Yamaha 350 HP outboards.

The company set a goal for the boat while developing it; it needed to hit 50 MPH with the Yamaha power.  During initial testing, the Canyon 456 reached 55.2 MPH at 5,900 RPM, and cruised at 31 MPH at 3,700 RPM........

Grafton Offering Land At A Discount........

The City of Grafton is currently promoting an opportunity for people to purchase land in Grafton Hills at a deep discount.  Purchasers may also have the chance to get the purchase price back once a house is built.

Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin says that anyone interested in purchasing a lot may do so for $5,000, and that money will be refunded upon the completion of the home, if it is built within two years.

Eberlin adds that if the purchaser does not build a house, there is a reverter clause that states that the city will get the lot back as well as a $1,000 surcharge........

The Piasa Bird Kidnapped Alton's Mayor........

Saturday afternoon, the Great Piasa Bird arose from the Mississippi River banks and kidnapped the Mayor of Alton, Brant Walker, who was being held hostage with the demand that people vote for the City of Alton to be featured on the television show, Small Business Revolution:  Main Street.

The Piasa Bird reportedly was quoted as saying "I'm going to take your mayor until Alton is number one!" and calling for the citizens to vote for Alton.

Saturday evening, it was announced that the monster's demands had been met, and that Alton remains in first place.  Mayor Walker was returned to his city unharmed........

USS Hannibal's Bell To Be Focal Point Of Riverfront Memorial........

The bell belonging to the USS Hannibal (AG-1) is slated to become the centerpiece of a memorial that will be constructed during the renovation of the Hannibal riverfront.

The USS Hannibal was one of just a few ships that served in the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II for which she earned several commendations.  The vessel was decommissioned in August 1944, and sank in Chesapeake Bay in 1945, where she was used for target practice.

Before sinking the Hannibal, the bell was removed and sent to the city of Hannibal, even though the vessel was not named for the city, but rather the general Hannibal Barca, who was a Carthaginian general who fought against Rome during the Second Punic War........

Crews Still Working To Remove Carp From The Lake........

The Missouri Department of Conservation has teamed up with the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the invasive Asian carp from Creve Coeur Lake.

Around sixty crew members working aboard 15 boats used over two miles of netting in an effort to catch the carp.  They worked to herd the fish toward harvest nets using sound and electricity.

On Friday, four thousand carp totaling 8.3 tons were dragged ashore in nets and dumped into trash bins.  The native fish were sorted out and returned to the lake........

Officials:  Upstream Reservoirs Ready For Spring Runoff........

According to the officials that manage the reservoirs along the Upper Mississippi River, the system is prepared to handle this spring's runoff.

John Remus with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that the reservoirs are able to reduce the flood risk in the area, even though runoff is expected to be slightly above normal.

Some of the snowpack across the plains has melted already and entered the reservoir system.  The releases from the Gavins Point Dam are expected to stay at 18,000 cubic feet per second through February........

Low River Levels Help MSD With Maintenance........

Over the past few weeks, the Metropolitan Sewer District, in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has been working along the St. Louis riverfront to guarantee that rain water can pass through the 44 outfalls in the floodwall out to the Mississippi River.

This project is done every five years, and the low river levels are giving MSD the chance to clean the outfalls.  Sean Hadley with the Metropolitan Sewer District says that crews are removing river mud and silt from the pipes and then cameras are sent up the pipes to make sure they are clear.

Hadley adds that people don't want to see flooded streets or their basements backing up.  If these outfalls are not clear, the streets may flood and water backs up into basements........

Missouri State Highway Patrol

News Release

Boating Season is Coming ... Spring Aboard !

Colonel Sandra K. Karsten, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the Patrol will participate in the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators’ Spring Aboard campaign. Developed by NASBLA, and produced under a grant administered by the U.S. Coast Guard, the annual Spring Aboard campaign informs and motivates boaters to prepare for the boating season by providing information on how to enroll in a boater education course. The campaign emphasizes enrollment in approved courses which meet the national boating educational standard.

The Spring Aboard campaign encourages boaters to register for a certified boating educational course during the week of March 18-24, 2018. Forty-nine states and U.S. territories require some form of boater education.

Missouri law requires everyone born after January 1, 1984, who operates a vessel on Missouri lakes to possess a certified boating safety education card and photo ID. This includes personal watercraft operators.

Boaters have the opportunity to sign up for a certified course in a classroom or take an online course by visiting the Patrol’s website at www.mshp.dps.mo.gov. Look under Training on the Patrol’s homepage for the “Boat Safety Education & Certification” link. The classroom courses provided by the Missouri State Highway Patrol are free, but registration is required and the boater ID card costs $15.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics indicate that of the boating accidents where the level of operator education was known, 77% of boating deaths occurred on boats where the boat operator had never received boating education instruction. In contrast, only 13% of deaths occurred on vessels where the operator possessed a nationally-approved boating safety education certificate.

“The primary boating season is right around the corner in Missouri,” said Col. Karsten, “and our many beautiful waterways provide the opportunity for all types of boating activities. The Patrol encourages those who have not already taken a course to sign up for a boating safety class now. This ensures you’re ready to boat safely when the boating season arrives.”

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others. Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

Congress Must Address Vital River System........

If you believe that you would not be affected by a several month-long shutdown of navigation along the Mississippi River, some researchers say you better think again.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison recently wrapped up a study that looked at the potential effects of a closure of any one of the 25 locks along the Upper Mississippi River, and they determined that the closure would damage the U.S. Economy.

While Congress is debating a new national transportation plan, there should be no reason for delaying repairs to the aging river shipping infrastructure........

The Pictures of the Day....... were sent to us by Capt'n Mike Hentrich who hails out of Piasa Harbor in.... M/V She's a Keeper

Good morning Bill,

I enjoy checking the site everyday and appreciate you keeping everyone in the loop over another long cold winter.

Thought I would share a short boat show my dad is putting together, actually not short as he has been working on it for the last 4 years or so. It is a replica of a 1700’s Spanish galleon (freighter) used to transport all kinds of stuff! Notice the cannons… hard to imagine pulling up alongside another ship and just blasting away!! AHHH….Back when men were men! The detail and craftsmanship in assembling this thing is simply amazing, the hull is double planked on bulkheads with steaming and bending of each small piece. He is working on the running rigging now and nearing completion.

Pictures don’t quite do it justice. Cap’t Tim would be jealous!!!

Thanks again,

Mike

Man Gigged Record Northern Hog Sucker........

The Missouri Department of Conservation has announced that Richard Bradshaw is now the latest state record breaker, as he gigged a northern hog sucker along the Current River in Carter County.

Bradshaw brought in the new "alternative method" record fish on January 27.  It weighed in at 2 pounds, 12 ounces, and had a length of 18.6 inches.  Bradshaw's catch bested the old record by 4 ounces.

Staff from the Missouri Department of Conservation verified the hog sucker;s weight on a certified scale in West Plains.  Bradshaw's catch is the first state record fish of 2018........

Brothers Transform Heart-Shaped Jacuzzi Tub Into A Boat........

A few years ago, stand-up comedian Rex Havens purchased a home at the Lake of the Ozarks, with a master bathroom that featured a red shower, red vanity, and a red, heart-shaped Jacuzzi tub.

Rex ended up removing the tub, and his sons Adam and Matt hatched a plan to turn the tub into a boat.  The brothers enlisted the help of Ben Boercker, owner of Boercker Auto and Marine to help with the conversion.

The project took two years time, with a lot of trial and error.  The boat was delivered on Labor Day, and Rex and his wife love vessel.  They think about offering champagne cruises, but it spends the majority of the time moored along their dock........

NMMA Using Miami Boat Show To Lobby Against Aluminum Duties........

During the Progressive International Miami Boat Show, the National Marine Manufacturers Association will be calling on boaters and stakeholders to contact Congress members about the possible 60 percent duty on China-sourced aluminum sheet.

The NMMA says the duty could end up affecting the overall supply of the raw material, even for companies that don't source their aluminum sheet from overseas.

The NMMA is calling on members to attend a meeting on Capitol Hill later this month with legislators and the U.S. Department of Commerce to discuss the potential harm the duty could cause to boat and trailer manufacturers, because U.S. production is not able to keep up with demand........

Hi Bill

Please allow me to introduce Jeff who is the builder of this wooden boat who couldn't have accomplished the build without the help of his wife Darcy. D's Bateau was designed by Jeff's father in 1939. Stuff got in the way so Jeff didn't start building her until 2010 and launched her in 2015. ( I'm not sure but I don't think Jeff was born yet in 1939 so we can give him a break on the late launch) She was trucked down from her build site in Colorado, launched and then moved here to Barber marina.

She is a beautiful labor of love.

The last name of the owners of the new wooden boat is Allen-Young

Mississippi River Levees

Critics Concerned Infrastructure Plan May Place River Towns At Risk........

President Trump's new infrastructure plan reportedly includes a proposal that would relieve the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers of the authority to regulate Mississippi River levees.

Many levee district leaders applaud the proposal, as they have been eager to raise their levees.  Opponents say that raising levees will merely shift flooding to areas of lower levels of protection.

The infrastructure plan is not legally binding, and is intended to return power to state and local governments.  Critics are concerned that the lack of Corps' oversight concerning levees will foster an "every man for himself" environment, where levee districts would try to out-compete each other, leading to worse flooding elsewhere........

Powerboat Registrations Rise 5% During 2017........

The National Marine Manufacturers Association recently released their New Powerboat Registrations Report, which reveals that preliminary data shows that through December 2017, new registrations increased 5 percent over 2016.

Cruiser registrations were up 10 percent, while the registrations of pontoons and watersports tow boats rose 7 percent.  Registration of personal watercraft rose by 5 percent.

The only segment that saw a decrease in registrations during 2017 were runabouts.  This decrease was attributed to the drop in sales of stern-drive powered vessels........

Anglers Catch 115 Lb. Black Carp....  Turned Over For Study....

Scientists with the Southern Illinois University Carbondale took possession of what is thought to be the biggest example of black carp ever captured for scientific study.

SIUC administers an Illinois Department of Natural Resources program which pays commercial fishermen a bounty for the black carp they catch and present to the university for study.

Officials from SIUC say that on Thursday, the 115 pound female black carp was caught by commercial fishermen in the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  SIUC took possession of the fish Friday........

Black Carp:

The black carp or black Chinese roach is native to lakes and rivers in East Asia, ranging from the Amur Basin, through China, to Vietnam. It is widely cultivated for food and Chinese medicine. Black carp, together with bighead, silver, and grass carps, make up the culturally important "four famous domestic fishes" used in polyculture in China for over a thousand years, and known as "Asian carp" in the United States.

Black carp are considered to be a serious threat to mollusks native to the United States, many of which are critically endangered. In 2007, the black carp was listed as an "injurious species" under the Lacey Act.

Missouri River Management

The Upper Missouri River Reservoirs Are Ready For Runoff........

According to John Remus of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the reservoirs along the Upper Missouri River are ready to handle this year's spring runoff.

Remus says that the reservoirs are prepared to reduce the risk of flooding, even though the spring runoff is forecast to be a bit above average at 104 percent of average.

Thanks to recent warmer weather, some of the snowpack in the Plains has melted already and made it's way into the reservoir system.  The Gavins Point Dam releases are expected to remain at the winter flow level of 18,000 cfs throughout February........
