Oxbow Lake.....
An oxbow lake is a U-shaped body of water that forms when a wide meander from the main stem of a river is cut off, creating a free-standing body of water. This landform is so named for its distinctive curved shape, resembling the bow pin of an oxbow

Documentary Looks At The Little River Drainage District's History........

Steve Turner is a film producer and director of television commercials and documentaries.  Currently, Turner is gathering information for his latest project, which tells the story of the Little River Drainage District.

Turner says that the history of the Little River Drainage District is not very well known, but it is basically the tale of how Southeast Missouri transformed from swampland to solid ground.

Following an 1893 land survey, Missouri state courts formed the Little River Drainage District in 1905.  The drainage district serves an area approximately 90 miles in length, in portions of Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Dunklin, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Scott and Stoddard counties........

State Sues DuPont Alleging Toxic Chemicals Released Into Ohio River........

This past week, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine filed suit against DuPont for allegedly releasing toxic chemicals into the Ohio River for several decades.

The suit claims that for decades, DuPont released perfluorooctanoic acid, known as PFOA, into the Ohio River from their Washington Works Plant in Parkersburg, West Virginia, despite their own internal research concluding that PFOA was toxic to the environment and humans.

DuPont used the chemical PFOA, also known as C8, in the production of Teflon products from the 1950s through 2013.  On Thursday, DeWine stated that he believes that DuPont kept releasing the chemical even though the company knew of the potential health issues it could cause........

Yamaha Addressing Large Outboard Shortage........

On Friday, the Yamaha Motor Corporation sent a letter to their customers to update them on the short supply of several outboard engines, with regards to "unprecedented demand".

Back in December Yamaha had sent out a letter stating that tremendous demands for 2.8 liter, 4.2 liter V6, 5.3 liter V8 outboards and rigging components meant that the company could not keep up with demand.

Ben Speciale, Yamaha president says that the company is working to address the issues.  Speciale visited Yamaha's factories last month in order to discuss increasing the allocation of products to North America this year........

Study:  River Shutdown Would Cost Millions........

Wisconsin researchers recently released the results of a study, which indicates that the failure of any one of the 25 aging upper Mississippi River locks could result in the addition of nearly half a million truckloads of freight hitting the highways between Minnesota and Missouri.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison suggests that a shutdown of the Mississippi River at Hannibal, Missouri would require trucks to haul more than 12 million tons of grain over a nine month shipping season, at a cost of millions of dollars, in addition to damaging roads.

Reportedly, the majority of these shipments would be travelling through southern Minnesota and Iowa, with a smaller amount of freight travelling through Wisconsin and Illinois.  It is estimated that this will cause nearly $29 million in pavement damage.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, however, estimates that the costs for backlogged maintenance on river infrastructure is north of $1 billion........

Lake Pepin Ice Survey First Step Toward 2018 Shipping Season........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District has announced that on February 21, they will begin taking this year's annual Lake Pepin ice survey.

Each year, the Corps takes Lake Pepin's ice measurements in order to forecast the navigational outlook along the Upper Mississippi River.  The lake is the widest naturally occurring section of the river, and it is the last portion of the navigation channel where winter ice will break up.

A Corps crew aboard an airboat will use a global positioning system to collect data, which will be used by the navigation industry to predict when it will be safe to break through the remaining ice to start the navigation season........

Congress Calls For Carp Plan Deadline........

Some in Congress are calling for a one-year deadline for completing a federal study on strategies for keeping Asian carp out of the Great Lakes.  The study focuses on bolstering defenses along an Illinois waterway near Joliet, Illinois.

On Thursday, 26 legislators from Great Lakes states sent a letter to the heads of House spending committees saying that the next federal budget should order the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to finish the Brandon Road Lock and Dam study by February 2019.

Last year, a draft was released recommending a $275 million upgrade to the Brandon Road Lock and Dam, which is a choke point between the Illinois River and Lake Michigan.  The legislators letter claims that the existing carp barriers are not enough........

Missouri Senator Roy Blunt says that changing the park's name will better emphasize it's central feature as well as making the park instantly recognizable to the millions of people that visit the St. Louis region each year.

Upper Mississippi River History

Loggers Used The River To Move Their Lumber........

During the 19th century, human ingenuity combined with water and weather helped move billions of board feet of logs and lumber along the Mississippi River.

Pioneers focused on the Wisconsin pine forests as a source of unlimited bounty, and built the first sawmill in the area along the Black River in 1819.  Eventually, larger and more profitable sawmills were built along the Mississippi River near La Crosse, Wisconsin and Winona, Minnesota.

Loggers would utilize the smaller streams and tributaries of the Mississippi River to float log rafts to the sawmills.  It is estimated that between 1855 and 1900, more than 6 billion board feet of logs were cut from the forests near the Black River, eventually floating their way down the Black River, then the Mississippi River, to the La Crosse sawmills.......

Man That Rescued Victims From Boat Explosion Honored........

On Thursday, a man that rescued two people following a boat explosion last summer was given a high honor from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Grant Leighty, a wrestling coach at Camdenton High School near the Lake of the Ozarks, was presented the "Honorary Trooper" certificate by Sergeant Scott White of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.  The certificate is presented to citizens that are nominated by a trooper for performing in a commendable manner, in dangerous situations, to aid another person, or in assisting troopers in the performance of their duties.

On September 24, 2017, Grant and his wife were cleaning their boat near the Pier 31 gas dock, when an explosion occurred.  James Holcomb was refueling his 1980 Carver Santiago Bay powerboat, when it erupted in flames.  Holcomb and passenger Susan Abele-Burns ended up in the water, and Grant leapt in after the seriously injured pair, assisting them to a personal watercraft dock, where they were pulled to safety........

Boat Manufacturers

Boat Builders, Congress Meeting To Discuss Possible Aluminum Sheet Duties........

The National Marine Manufacturers Association is calling on boat manufacturers who use aluminum sheet to meet with the Department of Commerce on Capitol Hill to discuss possible duties being placed on aluminum imports from China.

According to the NMMA, sheet aluminum may be seeing more than a 60 percent price increases due to an unprecedented move made by the U.S. Department of Commerce last year.

Boat builders and other manufacturers that use aluminum alloy sheet metal will likely see prices increase after the U.S. International Trade Commission found that product imports from China hurt American producers........

DownScan Sonar

Patent Dispute Settled Between Garmin, Navico........

Garmin and Navico recently settled a dispute about DownScan sonar and auto guidance patents.  This dispute has been going on for three years.

Garmin spokesperson Carly Hysell says that the settlement will include a wide cross-licensing of patents and intellectual property, however, the specifics of the licensing agreement will not be released.

Navico CEO Leif Ottosson says that they are pleased with the settlement, which includes guidelines for future cross licensing of technologies that will benefit customers of both companies.........

According to Doctor Sonar:

DownScan has a very narrow beam front to back and wide beam side to side so you will “see” finer details.Bait fish are going to show up as fine grain dots, like under the green arrows, while the larger fish are larger white returns like above the black arrows. The regular, or 2D sonar, tends to blend the returns together because of the wider shape of the beam in all directions. While the DownScan shows better detail, it is dependent on a steady forward motion for the beam to cover the bottom of the lake or river, much like the light bar on a photocopy machine.

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Cape Seeks Grant To Purchase Flood Damaged Houses........

On Wednesday, Cape Girardeau officials announced that two flood-prone vacant rental houses will be purchased and demolished if the city receives a federal grant.  Officials have been pursuing a grant ever since the New Years flooding in 2016.

This is the most recent effort by city officials to eliminate structures that sustained heavy damage from the Mississippi River flooding two years ago.

Last year, the State Emergency Management Agency advised city officials that they could proceed with submitting the grant application.  Scott Meyer, Cape's city manager said that SEMA's approval makes it likely that the city will receive the Hazard Mitigation grant........

NMMA Offers Input For Recreational Boating Industry........

During the most recent round of NAFTA negotiations, which was held at the end of last month, there were no major breakthroughs on some of the more difficult issues.  Some creative attempts were made to address some of the major issues........

Lake Of The Ozarks

A Look Back At Boating In The 70s........

During the 1970s, ski shows on the Lake of the Ozarks were in their heyday.  Entrepreneurs and innovators were behind the scenes , and the fruits of their labors shaped the future of family boating.

By the 70s, Century Boats had dominated the sport and runabout market, and the number one Century dealer was located at the Lake of the Ozarks.

A big draw to the lake in the 70s was the Lake of the Ozarks Water Show, which reportedly was larger, more spectacular and more famous than water shows in Wisconsin and Florida........

Mississippi River Shipping

Researchers Look At Effects Of Lock Failure........

Each year, over $88 billion in goods travel up and down the Mississippi River, making it an important part of the Midwest's economy.

The infrastructure that makes river shipping possible has many spots where a failure is possible.  If a failure occurs, surrounding states must decide if it is more cost effective to repair the waterway infrastructure, or absorb additional expenses when other transportation modes are tapped to pick up the additional freight movement.

The University of Wisconsin - Madison recently released a new report Modal Investment Comparison:  The Impact of Upper Mississippi River Lock and Dam Shutdowns on State Highway Infrastructure, which will help states weigh the costs and benefits of river infrastructure investment and maintenance decisions........

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS Gives Marinas, Boating Businesses $250 for Local Advertising

ALEXANDRIA, Va., February 5, 2018 – Could your marina, boat shop or recreational boating-related business use $250 to spend on local advertising of your choice? BoatUS will give you the money and help you grow your business if it joins the more than 800 marinas and 300 retail boating-related businesses participating in the BoatUS Partner Network Program.
The program aims to drive revenue to boating businesses that offer a discount to the more than a half million members of the national boating association. In exchange, BoatUS offers up to $250 a year simply for including a BoatUS logo in local advertising and offers additional marketing support online in boating publication advertising and point-of-sale promotional materials.
The most common marina discounts are on fuel, repairs, and transient slips. Tackle shops, fishing guides, ship’s stores, sail lofts and other businesses that cater to boaters have the flexibility to select discounts that best fit their target customers’ needs.
Partners tap into BoatUS member loyalty and gain a valuable listing on the BoatUS Member Service Locator, a custom webpage for their business on BoatUS.com, promotion in BoatUS Magazine and other boating and fishing publications, and a listing on the BoatUS App to help BoatUS members choose your business over your competition. Complimentary marketing supplies provided by BoatUS include promotional materials, signs, decals and flags.
Additionally, BoatUS Partners get up to $30 for every BoatUS annual membership sold to their customers. If a partner business sells at least 25 BoatUS memberships in a year BoatUS doubles the local advertising benefit to $500 for the following year.
Businesses interested in participating in the BoatUS Partner Network Program can visit BoatUS.com/Partner or email Partner@BoatUS.com.

Mississippi River In The Riverbend

Eagles Are Abundant Despite Cold Temperatures........

The towns of Grafton and Alton are located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers, and just a few miles downstream, the Missouri River joins the Mississippi.  The region is along the north-south flyway, and is a perfect place for eagles to spend their winter.

The estimated winter eagle population in the region is between 2,500 and 3,000 eagles, and they are spotted daily.  Eagles use the trees lining the river as daytime roosts while they look to spot an easy meal along the open water, especially near the dams.  Eagles prefer more sheltered trees in the nearby valleys for nightime roosts.

The Great River Road between Alton and Pere Marquette State Park is perfect for eagle watching enthusiasts, as that section runs along the base of limestone bluffs, which tower nearly 200 feet over the Mississippi River.  Early French explorers dubbed the bluffs "Broken Castles"........

River History....

February 6, 1988 in River History

An oil storage tank split open at Ashland Oil, located near Pittsburg, PA, and sent a million-gallons of oil into the waters of the Monongahela River and Ohio River. The oil spill fouled the waters of two rivers, cut off public water supplies, killed fish and closed schools in three states.

NMMA Recently Addressed Congress........

Last week, Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association presented a state of the recreational boating industry address to members of Congress.

Dammrich says that Americans spent a record $36 billion on recreational boating during 2016.  Americans purchased $9 billion worth of new boats, and another $9 billion in preowned vessels during 2016.  Another $6 billion was spent on boating accessories, and the remainder was spent on insurance, finance, storage and other miscellaneous items.

The recreational boating industry is in it's sixth year of growth, increasing by 6 percent last year.  The NMMA is expecting the growth to continue for a few more years, in spite of the usual growth cycle lasting about five years........

Sun Pillars: vertical shafts of light

A sun pillar is a vertical shaft of light extending upward or downward from the sun. Typically seen during sunrise or sunset, sun pillars form when sunlight reflects off the surfaces of falling ice crystals associated with thin, high-level clouds (like cirrostratus clouds).

When considering options for dealing with the invasive Asian carp in the Illinois, Mississippi Rivers and their tributaries, the question arises; why not encourage fisheries to catch carp as a food source?

Catching Asian carp for food could be a lucrative venture for fisheries in Illinois, as well as fisheries located along the Mississippi River.

While Asian carp are an ugly fish, they reportedly taste similar to shrimp and crab.  Other ugly fish, such as the slimehead are processed and sold as delicacies, others are sold as common dishes like fish and chips........

Iowa Woman Chronicles Every Sunrise Over The Mississippi River........

For the past five years, Alice Tjaden has been spending nearly every morning taking photographs of the sunrise over the Mississippi River.  Tjaden snaps a photo at the same time and location, however, each photo is unique.

The best shots that Tjaden captures find their way onto the Pictures of Burlington Facebook page, where their beauty is shared amongst the more than 11,000 members of the social media group.

Tjaden notes that the sunrise changes positions in the sky as the seasons change and the ideal conditions for good photos are when a few clouds are present and the river is still.  When the sun comes up, the clouds are turned to reflections on the water........

Could The Mississippi River Shift Course?

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is battling Mother nature at the confluence of the Mississippi, Atchafalaya and Red Rivers.  They constructed gates that directs 30 percent of the Mississippi River's flow into the Atchafalaya River.

Left unchecked, the path of the Mississippi River wanders around, and in time, the current channel of the Mississippi River would dry up as the Atchafalaya River's flow would increase.

In 1900, only about 5 percent of the water from the Upper Mississippi and Red Rivers was heading down the Atchafalaya River.  By the 1950s, the Atchafalaya River was collecting around 30 percent of the Mississippi River's flow.

If this trend had been allowed to continue, the Mississippi River would have shifted to the Atchafalaya River channel by the 1980s.  This would have dried up docks from Baton Rouge to the coast........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer

Twin Disc Released Their Second Quarter Results........

Twin Disc recently announced that during the second quarter of fiscal 2018, the company's sales increased by 67.9 percent to $56.5 million.  The increase is partially attributed to higher demand for marine products in the United States and Europe.

Year-to-date sales rose by 46.2 percent to $101.6 million, as compared to $69.5 million for the first half of fiscal 2017.  Year-to-date gross margin was 31.5 percent, as compared to 26.1 percent for the first half of fiscal 2017.

These increases are mainly due to higher volumes, improved operating efficiencies, a more profitable mix of product revenues, as well as a reduction of fixed manufacturing costs across the globe........

Corp's Model Aids Flooding Study, Levee Effects.........

This past week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released their long-anticipated computer model of the Mississippi River, which simulates the river's behavior over a 321 mile section of the river, between Thebes, Illinois and Keokuk, Iowa.

Experts say that the model, which includes the entire Riverbend region, will serve several purposes, with the main focus being to studying how flooding occurs.

According to Ted Labelle, an engineer with Crawford, Murphy & Tilly, the model contains two parts, one being the topography of the ground as it exists, and once that is established, water flows are sent through the model to determine the effects of things like over-built levees........

Mississippi River Near Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Man Spending His Final Days Along The River.........

We posted a news story yesterday about a houseboat moored along the Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Aboard the houseboat is Kelly Phillips, who has decided to spend his remaining days floating on the river.

Around a year ago, doctors advised Phillips that he was dying of cancer, so he decided to pick up a houseboat on the Mississippi River and head downstream.

Phillips notes that the Mississippi River is where he finds peace, but without the help of people he met along the way, he would not have made it this far........

..............READER COMMENTARY.............

Hi Bill,

Within 10 minutes of finishing the story on RiverBills about Kelly Phillips's journey down the Mississippi River I hauled anchor and was underway to Cape Girardeau.

I met Kelly at the public boat ramp just upstream from Thiebes Bridge where he was tied up waiting for a mechanic from Chester. His main engine was not running consistently and needed repairs before heading southbound.

He was very friendly and appreciative of the kindness river people have shown him. Myself and another well wisher helped him tie up, reposition his ramp and have a good conversation.

To look at his houseboat one has to wonder how he has made so far. I believe the answer to be those who extended him some courtesies along the way and maybe his boundless spirit.

Kelly mentioned his Facebook page for those who would like to follow his travels. Wherever he ultimately makes port I hope the sun shines on his face and the wind is at his back.

Arlie Appler

RiverBill says....  Arlie, what a great thing you did and thanks for the heart warming story.  Lets all wish Kelly well on his journey down the Mississippi River.

We looked but couldn't find Kelly's facebook page

News Release From Boat US

WASHINGTON, Feb. 1, 2018 – Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) in partnership with the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and Marine Retailers Association of the Americas (MRAA) went to Capitol Hill yesterday to address Congressional Boating Caucus members and invited legislative staff for the annual State of the Industry briefings at the Russell Senate and Rayburn House office buildings. The caucus is an informal bipartisan group of US senators and representatives formed in 1989 to advocate for the interests of the recreational boating industry.
Speaking to the groups gathered, NMMA President Thomas J. Dammrich reported on the recreational boating industry’s financial rebound, or “long road back,” said Dammrich, since the Great Recession. With the economy doing well, sales are up and reports from winter boat shows are positive. He also shared ideas on what Congress can do to support this important sector of US manufacturing.
MRAA President Matt Gruhn spoke to the shortage of qualified marine service workers, and the need for elected leaders to continue to broaden their thinking about what education means in America. “We need more support for apprenticeship and other technical trade programs, and encourage more people to make recreational boating their career,” said Gruhn.
As the boat owner’s advocate, BoatUS Vice President of Government Affairs Chris Edmonston spoke about the need for legislator support for recreational boating access, and specifically, the Water Resources Development Act which helps maintain the navigability of waterways by providing funds for dredging.
Edmonston also spoke to the success of boating safety education in reducing accidents and fatalities, and the need to revamp US Coast Guard licensing to better address the needs of recreational boaters. “The current licensing system was never intended for recreational boaters,” said Edmonston.

Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge Demolition

The center section of the old I-270 Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge, upstream structure, was demolished with an explosive blast and dropped it into the Chain of Rocks Canal by Omega Demolition Corporation.

The blast didn't go exactly as planned and caused some damage to the new bridge that crosses the canal just upstream from the old bridge and a portion of the old bridge was not destroyed. The Illinois Department of Transportation planned another explosive blast to complete the demolition of the following day.

Out For A Sunday Sail

Captain Chuck

Chuck had never been on a sailboat. We broke ice with a 2 by 4 to get out of Sioux Harbor on Saturday. The wind was blowing from upstream but we sailed upstream for 2 hours, tacking back and forth not making much distance but having a great time with Chick on the helm. First time out for me and Sandpiper this year. First time for Chuck to sail while he has been on the river his entire life thanks to his father giving him a good start on an old wood boat

Dead Fish In The River Normal This Time Of Year

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois........

Over the past several weeks, around 40 dead fish washed up along the banks of the Mississippi River at Quincy Lock and Dam No.21, causing some residents to become concerned.

Rob Maher with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources says that the sight of several dozen dead fish can cause concern, it is quite common during this time of year.

Maher says that the fish kill is a kind of natural selection, that fish that are able to adapt to rapid temperature changes are the ones that survive, and therefore are able to produce offspring that are stronger........

News Release From Boat US

ANNAPOLIS, Md., February 1, 2018 – “Boating safety” usually means preventing injuries or accidents while on the water. Boats in winter storage have some unique safety concerns for boat owners who make periodic checkups over the long winter season. Here are five tips from the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water to help boaters stay safe while visiting the boat this winter.

1. Injuries from ladder falls can be severe but are preventable. When using a ladder to climb aboard your frozen boat, be sure it is firmly planted, secure it with a line to avoid shifting, and have someone hold the base. Never descend a ladder facing forward or with your arms full. If moving tools, supplies or other objects to and from the deck, lower or raise them in a bucket using a rope.
2. Don’t trust the nonskid to do its job. Nonskid decks are slippery when covered by snow or encrusted with ice. Brush away any buildup on the deck where you plan to step, and always hold onto something, just as you would if you were underway. In warmer winter climates, decaying leaves and algae can also make decks slippery.
3. Snow and ice are heavy. One square foot of dense, wet snow can weigh more than 20 pounds, so use caution when going underneath a tarp or winter cover that’s loaded with snow. For even a small boat stored outside, over a ton of weight can be added after a storm, so brush off what you can before climbing aboard.
4. Check your jackstands for proper support. Jackstands or blocking can shift as the boat gets laden with snow and ice, or due to repeated freeze/thaw cycles. Never adjust jackstands yourself. Have marina personnel adjust and move supports.
5. Trailer boat frames should be supported at the rear cross beam. This prevents the tongue from lifting off the ground like a seesaw when climbing aboard from the stern.

Mississippi River Near Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Man Spending His Final Days Along The River.........

For the past week, there has been a houseboat moored along the Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri
New Arch Museum Includes 19th Century Riverfront Model, Much More.....

The new museum and visitors center under the Gateway Arch is nearing completion and is slated to reopen on July 3, just in time for Fair St. Louis, which will be returning to the Arch Grounds after a four year hiatus.

On Thursday, representatives from the media had the opportunity to check out the progress on the museum expansion.  A similar tour was offered in September and the 46,000 square foot addition was mostly empty.  This time around, several items were still under wraps, but there was plenty to see.

The museum's main gallery will feature six themed areas, telling the story of St. Louis from the French Colonial era through the construction of the Arch in the 1960s.  One feature of the exhibit is a model of the St. Louis riverfront as it appeared in 1852, complete with riverboats docked along the levee........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois
Activation Of The Bridge Cameras Delayed.......

Even though crews have completed the installation of license plate reader cameras on the Clark Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River at Alton, they have yet to be activated.

Alton's Chief of Police Jake Simmons states that the cameras are in place, however, there are some cellular communications issues that must be addressed.

Plans for installing the license plate reader camera system on the Clark Bridge was originally brought to the attention of the public back in September.  The system is intended to better keep tabs on criminals traveling to the Riverbend........
